See, I might not like how certain relationships develop in QLs, or how the script isn't polished, or how some characters are toxic or problematic, etc. But I'll deffend the existence of those shows first, as queer media, before criticing them as television shows.
I'm working on my thesis, and the main topic that sparkled my investigation was the disinformation/predjuice against lgbt people in my country. And the more info I look, the more sad I get at the overall news and perceptions about being queer in México.
It's ironic because this is one of the countries with the biggest Queer-to-non-queer radio population, yet we're also ranked on the top in the list of countries with more hate crimes against lgbt people.
I see how we're discussed everyday. I see how people talk about being queer as if it was some strange, othered reality, somehow imposed by the media and the gay agenda.
I saw people laughing and saying they couldn't take a murder seriously because the person that had been killed used neutral pronouns for themselves. The magistrade. A person in a political position. Someone who could fight for more just laws and help people in a more direct way. Murdered.
And people were discussing whether or not it had been a "passion crime" because "You know how it it's with those peoples. They're more emotional, and jealous... Not normal, rational, like us."
I saw people discussing how should someone go in those cases, if your gender was recognized as nonbinary, and you were killed.
Would you be labeled as female or male? Could you organs be donated to men or women? You're already dead so what does it matter, right?
They don't know every word and speculation they throw was about me. And people that are like me.
Because they think we don't exist. We're few. We're just an invention of the news.
And how could they believe anything else, when every media that depicts us comes from the outside? There's no such thing as a consistent queer representation in our media.
And when it is, it's done poorly. It's done once or thrice. And then nothing.
And then I will have to discuss with people whether or not "the jotos" in Nimona are forced representation because they don't provide anything to the plot. I will have to discuss with people how drag queens and trans people are the same and both just confused men. How flamboyant people are ridiculous and just putting themselves out there on purpose to be humiliated.
My degree is in Communication's Scienes. I study media, journalism, language, psychology, marketing, and everything that involves the act of interacting with others (because every thing we do, it's communication).
And when I tell you that having queer productions, queer media, even if toxic, even if badly acted, even if half assed, would help improve the way society accepts queer people... It's because it would.
Fiction is not reality. A show where everyone's gay won't turn every watcher into a walking rainbow. But it would generate visibility. It would raise discussions. And hopefully normalization.
If it's normal, even if it's not accepted, it's an improvement.
I'm not saying countries with QL productions are the pinnacle of queer safety.
But they're actively helping queer people, even if in the messiest way, to be more normal. To be seen. Slowly, steadily.
And the media itself evolves and becomes better, more nuanced, better written, better directed, better filmed.
Isn't that great? That we get to see the evolution of a whole genre and its impact in the real world, in real time?
I think it is.
I hope these productions get to my country. I hope México and Latinoamérica starts creating media with queer protagonists.
I hope we get a telenovela where the 2 male love interests end up with each other and the main girl character marries the villain. I hope we get drag queens hosting a talent show. I hope we stop being the butt of the joke. I hope people don't laugh when we're murdered. I hope no one feels such hatred towards our existence they feel they have to end it. I hope we star in more Rosa de Guadalupe episodes, just as people, not as the main theme.
I hope we get our own Triages and School Presidents and GAPs and Last Twilights and Only Friends and Playboyys and KinnPorsches and Semantic Errors and HIStory's Sagas and Untameds and Takara and Amagis.
Because even with their faults, they all portray queer people in a light that's different to just. Pain or mockery.
I hope the television industry in this and every latino country improves.
I hope we get more queer stories in our media that don't end in tragedy just for being queer. I hope we get happier coverage news.
So yeah. I will defend queer media's existence. Always. Until it's no longer necessary for me to justify our existence in real life.

I'm visiting friends over the weekend which means I won't be able to watch Caged Again (nooooooo!) or the Kidnap finale (noooooo!!) or the Petrichor premiere (NOOOOOO!!!) until at least Monday (because Sundays is for crying over the Every You, Every Me finale).
I've ramped up my queue to post lots of pretty edits people have tagged me in (thank you! 💜💜).
I hope you have yourselves a comfy and gentle weekend, and to those attending the BillyBabe & MaxNat fanmeets in Berlin: I hope you have oodles of fun! 💜💜💜

is that piece of media actually bad, or is it just not following the blueprint you projected onto it? is that work actually not good, or are you just demanding something from it that is absolutely antithetical to its themes, genre, tone, and narrative goal? is that story actually poorly written, or do you just dislike that it is not the specific things you wanted from it that it never set out to be, never was, and never is going to become? is it actually bad, or is it actually well-executed and you just dislike the story it chose to be because it isn't catering to your specific desires and expectations?

One thing to also keep in mind is that they're not amateurs and/or bad filmmakers for not using the most expensive boom mics or camera gear or post-production software. Stuff like that is incredibly expensive and might simply not be available to them (equipment like that is usually rented - and yes, that's expensive too).
It's not a matter of "we don't care about sound quality." It's quite literally a matter of "if we don't use body mics we might not be able to shoot our show at all."
Personally, I'd rather have the show.
Some of you need to remember that thai BLs are always a bit low budget and don't expect high quality expensive CGI, sound, animations, fantasy / sci-fi fashion etc. Just deal with it. Learn to appreciate it in a charming way despite low quality.
Yall didn't grow up with 90s series / movies and it shows.

It took them a bit to fix things (apparently they uploaded it in VR mode first) but here's finally the pilot for Knock Out in all of its glory. Muay Thai BL with shady mafia dealings on the side and the usual Dee Hup magic? Count me in!

Looks like WeTV premiered the Knock Out pilot on their youtube channel and then immediately took it down again so the only subtitled version is on xitter for now (I tried uploading it here but it doesn't come with subs).
This is a Dee Hup production btw so it's an immediate must-watch for me.

I know, everyone's in their Heart Killers era right now but the first four (unfortunately very short) episodes of Winter Is Not the Death of Summer But the Birth of Spring were released today and the trailer for that looked really promising and refreshing. Prison BL but make it sweet!!
Edited: Aaaand there's no English subs yet. I'll update this post as soon as they are added. 🤞

lmao that reminds me how during my very first convention my friends were approached by rtl (aka a big German broadcaster) and then a very obnoxious and rude journo and his team accompanied us for a whole day. My best friend and I, we kind of made fun of him so we were completely cut from the programme, but my other friends ended up in this very biased and rude tv-segment that eventually got so much backlash that the journo was demoted to doing street interviews. I distinctly remember him asking if my friends "had found their elf princes yet" and then cutting their answers to make them look like complete idiots. I have never seen anything more out of touch and cringe but also actively manipulative and mean-spirited.
This kind of ragebait "journalism" will (sadly) always be a thing though - but it didn't stop gamescom or fedcon or dokomi or the WTG from being successful so hopefully we'll have many more BL fanmeets and events in Berlin and the rest of Germany/Europe soon. 🙏

Oh? Germany? What's it with Berlin as the new European BL hub?
Tumblr media
Nvm it's "only" Yin and War and (understandably) non of the other actors. I was very tempted there for a hot minute. 🫠

Oh, you don't have to imagine it. Here's a second-hand (because it's since been paywalled) article about how the Berliner Zeitung handled MEX (an anime/manga convention that's been around for over a decade) this year.
To be fair though German tabloids only hate games and manga/anime so BL should be safe for now (except for the usual racism). 🤡
