okay so i am doing some preliminary googling before i reach out to Professional, and there's a framework for personhood which breaks it down into multiple different categories, which i think is very helpful?

like, it talks about moral personhood - which isn't what most people mean, but includes both regular people and corporations - the capacity to behave in a moral or immoral way, and going along with that, the presumed obligation to behave in a moral way. i can think of some people who would object with this notion (goldwave, im looking at you mostly, although im sure there are others who would object also)

then theres metaphysical personhood, which is what most people are discussing, and the qualities that make someone a person in this way aren't pinned down; it's very hotly debated. there's a number of different schools of thought who all view this completely differently.

there's physical personhood, which is mostly not debated but is also viewed very differently by different schools of thought

and there's legal personhood, which is important to the novel, but not the question of it. like, it's integral to the setting, and probably i will have it so that legal personhood has been extended to artificial lifeforms, but that doesn't answer the question of what makes a person, really, because the type of personhood the book is about it more metaphysical.

anyways, this breakdown is really useful. i can automatically say that artificial life forms would be moral persons in this setting; they have ethical programming, surely. if you understand what is moral and immoral, you have to choose between them; you behave in either a moral or immoral fashion. having the capacity to understand these things, i think, is the bar - otherwise people who haven't studied enough philosophy to have a strong system of ethics could be argued to not be moral persons, and i disagree with that. (I don't think the argument would be sucessful, anyways.)

the article i read also breaks down some of the proposed qualities of metaphysical personhood, and this opens the door for a sort of metric through which personhood can be evaluated.

I actually really love that we see Helena's palpable hesitation about going back to the severed floor. We know that this has all been a publicity thing for her and it's about helping Lumon, so she's really invested in the outcome, but like. from her POV, she's literally letting someone who actively hates her and everything she stands for, and also has a proven willingness to hurt herself if it means hurting Helena, who now knows who she is and her significance to Lumon, pilot her body for 8 hours every day in an environment where they've repeatedly failed to control her. If I were her, I'd be genuinely surprised to wake up with my limbs intact.

You already questioned why on earth she'd come back after Helly's suicide attempt, and the identity reveal explains the reasoning, but on a human level that's still a wild thing to have to think about. This person (who is you but also isn't) almost succeeded in killing you, and like a week later you let them pilot your body again like nothing happened. How could you not be terrified?

Full on saying "sex based oppression isn't real, that's a radfem talking point" seems like way too much to me. Like, it IS real. Every single person who was assigned female at birth, or who is considered to be female bodied in any way (so, including eg trans fems who may be considered female bodied due to surgery, intersex people who were maybe assigned as female later on in life), is oppressed because of that. That's an inarguable fact.

But that doesn't mean every single person who was assigned male at birth oppresses every single person assigned female at birth through the axis of sex. Like, obviously trans people who were amab don't have more social privilege as a group than cis gender conforming women.

Both things can be true at once.

To be totally blatantly obvious, I am going through some really rough medical stuff right now [currently standing with a whole ass illness or disease that my doctors - PLURAL DOCTORS - can't figure out]. I'm not doing well financially and I can see the writing on the wall if this keeps going on.

In other words, I'm pressed for cash and I am desperate for any means that could keep me going. I'm planning on going through some of my beloved prized belongings and ebaying them off with my whole line of custom work for Monster High dolls too.

At this point, before I start selling everything I own lol, if any of you guys have interest in me doing any sort of commission - whether it's a simple monochrome icon or a traditional drawing I could snail mail to you - I would literally be sooooo glad to talk!!!

I'm borderline freaking out. The longer this keeps going and the doctors keep scratching their heads, the more my body is falling apart and the more my bills are lining up.

Genuinely anything is appreciated. I'll do almost ANYTHING if it means I can get a bit of cash flow to keep me alive at the moment.

I know it sounds dramatic, but I'm really not doing well and I'm desperate to at least stay financially above water while I have three organs getting ominously close to failing 🙃
