10x03: Ghosts - Details

Let’s talk details today. I realized (because several people told me) that I didn't talk about the Carol/Daryl kitchen scene yesterday. I totally meant to talk about it. My post yesterday had so much in it, I didn't realize that I left it out. I'll get to that in this post.

***As always, spoilers abound below for 10x03: Ghosts. Don’t read until you’ve watched!***

Opening Sequence:

I talked about the numbers at the beginning. I won’t go into details about the numbers leading up to 44. I'm sure they probably have significance, but I think I already pointed out the things that are most relevant to TD.

I forgot to mention something yesterday about the 49. @wdway had the insight that, in terms of history, Alaska was the 49th state to enter the United States union. That may seem random to you, but those of us who have studied the symbolism for a long time are familiar with this. Why? Because we saw so much Alaska symbolism in S6 around the wolves. Remember we saw the Alaska license plate in 5x16.

The Alaska license plate has a flag with stars on it reflect the Sirius symbolism. So, the wolves (possibly the Whisperers), and Alaska are very entangled with Beth symbolism. The 49th hour could also represent Alaska and the wolves, which is just another way to point to Beth's return.

It's also important to note that we see a lot of binoculars in this episode. The characters look at walkers coming toward them from far off, so the binoculars theme is strong.

At the group meeting, Lydia says she doesn't believe Alpha is sending the walkers. We don't know who is if she isn't, but I think Eugene gives the explanation we’re supposed to accept. He believes the satellite falling from the sky and subsequent fire is bringing in walkers from all directions. Iet was bad luck that the satellite touched down near TF's communities, and they might be dealing with a lot of walkers for a while. We also see that the highwaymen want revenge on Alpha for killing two of theirs on the pikes. I think they’re probably setting up something there.

Rule of Threes:

A few examples I didn’t mention yesterday. After the town meeting, they divide into three groups. Father Gabriel will lead Alexandria in fighting waves of walkers coming from the north. This is where Rosita and Eugene are. It basically means staying in Alexandria and fighting them as they reached the fence.

Aaron and Negan go south to fight off the walkers coming from that direction. As Eugene said, the ones coming from the south are more dispersed and therefore somewhat easier to kill.

The third group is Daryl, Carol, and Michonne, who go to the northern border to meet Alpha. Another example of threes and also the north symbol.

Another example of threes comes when Negan and Aaron argue while fighting walkers. Aaron doesn't want Negan to have the crowbar because he doesn't trust him with a weapon like that. Negan finally relents and picks up the broomstick. Then Aaron says, "three coming in on your side." So he turns to fight three walkers. A small instance of three, but it’s there nonetheless.

Rosita and Eugene:

The first time we seem Rosita and Eugene, they're fighting at Alexandria together. Rosie asks, "You want to go back, don't you?" Eugene answers, "No, I'm good." It's a small scene, but the dialogue is very Bethyl-ish. It houses both the "you can't go back," theme we saw in S5, in the “No, I'm good,” reminded me of Beth singing, We’ll Be Good in Alone.

Meeting Alpha:

This was pretty straightforward and were obviously setting up a Carol vs Alpha arc. We saw the H coin Lydia left at the base of Henry's Pike.

Another instance of threes comes when Alpha points out that she knows TF has crossed her land three times. Once during winter storm, once during the fire, and once when Michonne and Aaron were on the bridge. I have to wonder how she knows all that. They’ve shown very obviously that she and Beta were not in the area, so how does she know. Did some of the Whisperers stay in the area? Maybe. Did she set up cameras? No idea. But it's very intriguing.

Aaron and Negan:

It's also important to note that Aaron and Negan fight walkers near a green and yellow tractor. Obviously, the colors catch our attention, but I thought of two times we've noticed tractors that are tangled up with Beth symbolism.

The first was in S6. Just before Glenn's death fake out, he and Nicholas and Heath went to a tractor store to kill all the walkers there. It's kind of interesting because this was right before Glenn's death fake out, which has parallels to Beth's. But it's also interesting that Heath was there, and now he's with the helicopter people, the same as Rick.

I’ve also talked recently about the theme of having a weak character die while a strong character lives. I mentioned it with Lizzie and Mika, as well as Gamma and her sister. Nicholas and Glenn were another example of this.

We should talk about the hog weed. I talked about Aaron's blindness yesterday, and how this walker looked a lot like the Cherokee Rose walker from 6x06. The other thing is that Negan says the green stuff covering this walker is hogweed. Not only is that a pig reference, but this is a real weed you can look up. It does cause rashes and blindness. The reason Negan knew what it was is because he got a burn on his arm. Hogweed is an interesting choice because it flowers in a similar way to carrots. Only, it's very toxic where carrots are obviously not.

At one point, Negan makes random reference to the story of America. I thought that was kind of an odd thing for him to say until @wdway pointed out the 49th hour being an Alaska reference. It might be a way of saying that the US history is important in the symbolism. Remember, we’ve also seen paintings about US history, including the Thanksgiving painting and the Crossing of the Delaware painting.

When Aaron gets to the cabin, he's thrashing around and walkers get inside the door. Negan kills them. We had a couple of other Beth callbacks here. I noticed Negan said, "You all right?" It's a pretty generic thing to say, but I remember our fandom making a big deal about Daryl saying that to Beth in the graveyard. Because it showed he cared if she was all right or not. And remember that in this parallel, Negan = Daryl and Aaron = Beth.

Negan also asked if Aaron had washed out his eyes. Aaron said that he used water to wash them out and it was gone. Negan gives him water to drink. So, an example of someone running out of water once again.

Carol/Daryl/Michonne in the school:

I talked about how because of the dog on the outside, I believe everything is a reference to Beth's return. First off, let's note that we see a lot of broken glass here. A lot of it. (Broken glass theory).

Then there's the clock with no hands. @frangipanilove, @wdway and I have actually talked a lot about what this might mean. We haven't settled on anything concrete yet. I think we need to see a few more examples of it before we know for certain.

For me, I think part of it is that Carol is sort of in prison in her own mind. So, the clock with no hands may represent a prison or the fact that time is not passing for some reason.

@frangipanilove had a really good insight. She suggested since we saw a lot of clocks around Beth (that's where the clock symbolism originated, because someone asked Gimple if the clocks at Grady were important and he said yes) perhaps a clock with no hands represents zero time. In other words, perhaps when there is no more time, that’s when Beth will return. I think that's a really great insight because something else in this episode points to the same thing and it’s sort of an adjacent symbol.

Next to the clock is a flu poster. It occurred to me this could be connected to the radiation/sickness theme.

We see the egg timers around Carol. The thing about egg timers is that they always count down. If you set a timer for 30 minutes, it counts backward from 30 to 0 and when it hits zero, the bell goes off. We see the egg timer several different times around Carol and it always counts down to zero.

Remember also that in 4x16, A, Joe Claimer talked about New Year's Eve and the ball dropping and counting backward down to zero. This is a theme we've seen before. We’re thinking that the timer represents counting down to Beth's return and when it hits zero, she’ll show up. Seeing the egg timers go off three different times in the school represents this, and the clocks with no hands on them may too.

Of course, my opinion on this may change as we learn more.

I talked yesterday about how Daryl looks through the broken glass. I instantly recognized this as a Coda call back. We saw the gov look through glass when he went to the funeral home in 4x06, and that had a ton of Beth foreshadowing in it. Rick did the same thing at Grady just before Beth was shot. Now we see both Daryl and Carol do the same thing. So this is definitely a call back to Coda.

In the school, Carol says, "I'll take first watch." That's a call back to Consumed when she told him the same thing. This part looked visually similar to Consumed because it's her and Daryl in a dark building. They’re not alone, of course, and as I talked about yesterday, there also a lot of callbacks to Still, as well.

In the part where Daryl told the story about his father driving truck, there's a couple of details I didn't mention. Carol calls his dad a “meth-snorting trucker.” That’s a callback to Merle’s crystal meth, but also remember that Daryl mentioned the tweaker who used to sell to Merle in Still. So, this is a reference to Still.

Daryl mentions that the girl in the story, on the side of the road is crying. Think Beth in Inmates. He also mentions that when he thought he hit her, his dad called the local PD. Grady anyone? And even the way they sit with their feet flat & knees pointed to the ceiling is very reminiscent of how Beth and Daryl sat on the porch of the moonshine shack. Oh yeah, and the walls of this room are painted bright yellow. Just saying.

One other thing: his references to I-66 and Kentucky jumped out at me as significant. I couldn’t remember other times we’d specifically seen either in the show, so I Googled. The I-66 in Kentucky is a real thing. There’s a main drag that runs from Kentucky to Kansas, and to the East, one of its termination points is near D.C. Makes sense as a reference, right. But I also found out (HERE) that there were originally plans to extend it all the way through California. Those plans got cancelled in the ‘90s and the highway was never extended, but if it had been, it would have gone directly though New Mexico. So this is actually a cloaked New Mexico reference. Definitely a foreshadow.

In the gym sequence, Carol stepped into a noose, which makes it part of the hanging theme we've seen before. We also saw soccer balls a lot. I'm not sure what that represents, but the camera focuses on them several times.

@bethgreeneprevails also pointed out some parallels to Beth in this sequence that I totally missed. Carol stepped into a trap with her foot—like Beth did in Alone. With her foot in the trap, she shoots at a walker—like Beth did in Alone. And her cutting her arm where she did, with glass no less, is a parallel to Beth’s suicide arc in S2. I was trying to compare it to her bandaged arm in S5, which is the opposite arm. But in S2 she cut her left arm with a piece of glass. Coincidence?

Which leads to another theory we’ve been batting around. I said yesterday that we didn’t see her sustain the injury. We’re kind of wondering if, also paralleling Beth in S2, Carol did it to herself. I don’t know if it would have been conscious or unconscious, and I truly don’t think Carol is actually one to commit suicide. But it wouldn’t be the first time we saw a character self-harm to relieve grief. *coughs Daryl* I’ll come back to this in a minute.

Let's talk more about Carol's hallucinations. I said yesterday, I think there were three hallucination sequences inside the school. I don't count her seeing the home economics book, because I don't think that was a hallucination sequence. I think that was her seeing things while awake. But the other three were almost more like extended dream sequences.

I think the first one was when Daryl told her the story about the truck and the missing girl. That was dream sequence number one, and as they stand up, we hear the egg timer go off.

Dream sequence number two was when she walked to the glass window that was broken and saw the Samara walker inside. Then she sees Henry and hears him call her mom. It looks like she's about to get stabbed by the Samara walker when suddenly she wakes up.

That's when Daryl finds her and says she's been gone for half an hour and tells her his dad was not a trucker. After that, the egg timer goes off. So because of the nightmare, she actually woke herself up prior to the alarm that time. But when Daryl tells her his dad was not a trucker, she was definitely awake then.

As soon as he leaves, she sees movement in the corridor and starts chasing it. This is when she goes into the gym. The gym is her third dream sequence.

I've also said that I think each of them represent something. I'm not entirely sure what yet but here's a few musings.

I said Daryl’s story about the girl disappearing in front of the truck sounds a lot like Beth and her body disappearing in Atlanta. So perhaps that represents the past. The second hallucination was Carol seeing blood and a dark walker and then Henry. I think this represents what she's dealing with now. Specifically, Henry's death. The dark girl (Samara) walker might represent Carol's own inner darkness and the demons she's dealing with. They’re literally haunting her dreams and chasing her around.

And the third sequence in the gym? Again, I can't be sure, but I think it represents the future. Something about the Whisperers will lure Carol into a trap. Perhaps that will lead to Ezekiel's death fake out. I said yesterday that I thought maybe their group ran into walkers outside the school and that's where Carol got the glass in her arm, but we didn't see it. I was thinking about that work in terms of what it meant for Carol, but it occurred to me it could foreshadow Ezekiel's arc.

Perhaps Carol will be lured into a trap by the Whisperers and it will lead to Ezekiel's death fake out. (Hence not seeing some interaction with walkers. That would perhaps symbolize Carol not realizing Ezekiel is still alive. It also lines up well with not seeing what happened with Beth and the walkers after Coda, and Daryl not realizing she is alive either.) Something like that. Only after that do we see the female whisperer’s eyes open, which probably represents Beth’s return.

Again, this is conjecture on my part and my interpretations will probably change as the arc unfolds. This is what I'm leaning toward now.

Let’s talk about the kitchen sequence.

They played a song called Care of Cell 44. Again, we kind of freaked out and realize there's a song by this name the show. There’s the 44 again, which is the issue where Andrea was shot in the head and survived. We actually saw a 44 on a magazine at the end of Coda with Morgan. Aside from being an obvious reference to Andrea’s comic book arc, you could also argue that we saw a 44 the end of Coda and now are seeing on again, which suggests the event of Coda are coming back around.

Think of it in terms of music. When you play music, there are signs at the beginning and ending of the coda to tell you when to start the coda, and when to end it, especially if there are repeats. So we saw a 44 at the end of 5x08, after Beth was shot. Now we’re seeing them in a big way again.

Back to Care of Cell 44. My thoughts immediately went to 7x03, The Cell. Daryl was a prisoner at the Sanctuary. Anyone who cared to interpret the symbolism there knew it was all about Beth. They played a song a lot like the one Beth sang at the prison in S3 and Daryl started to cry.

Also remember that even though Angela Kang wasn't show runner yet she wrote both The Cell and the episode in S3 where Beth sang. She put similar songs in both episodes. So it's important to note that music always has importance for Angela. And now she’s the show runner and doing an amazing job.

So we hear this song play during the kitchen sequence and it’s a fairly upbeat song. It reminded me of the upbeat songs we saw around her in 6a when she was making cookies and killing walkers, as well as songs we heard in 5b, such as the Bee Gees Spicks and Specks, which talks about leaving a girl behind.

So I know certain shippers are freaking out about this dream sequence, but that’s kind of laughable. I have three things to say about it.

1) There is nothing remotely romantic in it. It lasts about 15 seconds and Daryl and Carol barely look at each other. I also had the thought that their positioning in the kitchen, with Carol on the right and in front and Daryl on the left and slightly behind, looks a whole lot like when Deanna and Spencer fought in the kitchen in S6. If anything, that's backs up the idea of Carol and Daryl being mother and son in the sequence.

2) I don't think we've seen all of the sequence yet. I think it might follow a pattern similar to Rick's Old Man Coda/Carl’s vision for the future. In S8, we saw a little bit at a time. First, we saw Rick waking up, then later he went out into the main room and talking to Michonne. Then later we saw Judith come in, Rick talk to Carl, and eventually Rick taking Judith out through Alexandria to where Negan was working. But not until Carl died and they explained that this was his vision for the future did we actually see the full sequence, nor did it make sense.

I think there might be something similar here. Because the way Carol’s kitchen dream cut off, without much hint as to what it all means, makes it feel very unfinished. I kind of hate to speculate on where it's going (although, you know me, I will ;D) because I just don't think we have all the puzzle pieces yet. I think we’ll see more of this dream throughout the season, and we’ll get a little more with each time.

The other option is that maybe we won't see more, but some point Carol will explain something that's going on in her own head that will make this make sense. Either way, I don't think we can do much correct interpretation of this yet.

But!

I will give you two possibilities that are thought of. Just keep in mind that they will most likely change if we learn anything new.

So here goes. The fact that Henry is in the dream is important. He's wearing his compass rose T-shirt. The compass rose is part of the Sirius/North Star symbolism, and also remember how heavily Henry was paralleled with Beth when he was still alive. So, I'm thinking that Henry being in this sequence symbolically represents Beth being there.

But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Carol says she needs jam and Daryl tells her to go get some. We don't actually see her go, that the point is, she’s out of jam needs to go find some.

Remember that this is the episode where we had the peanut butter and jelly reference from FG, and that is definitely a Bethyl thing. Jam and jelly are the same thing. I feel like this is part of the peanut butter and jelly theme.

Beth = peanut butter and Daryl = jam. Carol and Daryl are the two similar ones in these relationships. In other words, Carol and Daryl are alike. They're the ones that are prone to pessimism, isolation, and self-destructiveness. Their significant others, Beth and Ezekiel, also similar. There are more prone to optimism, faith, and positivity. So the jam would actually represent both Carol and Daryl.

I think the fact that they’re out of jam and looking for more perhaps represents that neither of them are in a happy, romantic relationships with their significant others right now. They're not currently the jam to someone else's peanut butter currently. And then Carol almost leaves to get more. My first thought was this was simply another way of saying that Daryl and Carol will go on some sort of trip together, looking for their significant others.

Then I considered Henry. I'm thinking he might represent Beth in this equation. So maybe it's something more like they'll find Beth first and once she's with Daryl, Carol will need to leave on her own to find Ezekiel. Something like that.

And again, I'm really, really conjecturing here. Because I feel like were missing a great deal of the sequence and by the time we get it, I might realize I’m completely off in this interpretation. I'm okay with that. I'm just telling you some of the thoughts that gone through my head so far. Then we also see Carol's watch with no hands on it.

If it means Beth’s return, what I've said here already would make sense. It could also represent Carol being in her own prison and needing to break out of it by going to look for the jam. Again, just some thoughts.

That takes care of the symbolism side of things, but I wanted to talk about something more literal concerning Carol. It was something Angela Kang said on TTD. (I’ll talk more about TTD tomorrow.) She was describing this scene and she talked about it in a way that hadn’t occurred to me until I heard her say it. For Carol, the scene is very carefree and upbeat. UNTIL she sees Henry sitting there. That’s when Carol wakes up and starts to cry.

So, according to AK, the reason Carol doesn’t want to sleep is because when she sleeps, she dreams of her dead children, and she can’t bear it. I could tell Angela was almost in tears talking about this with Carol. She obviously has a lot of sympathy for Carol’s character. I thought it was sweet.

And this may possibly counter what I said above. About seeing more of this dream. Maybe we will, maybe we won’t. But the reason it cut off so suddenly is because she saw Henry and woke herself up. Then immediately looked for more pills, which she didn’t have.

My point? AK confirmed this hallucination was not about Daryl. Not at all. The breakfast is just Carol’s idea of normalcy. Hanging out with her BFF. Eating breakfast. Being happy. But the point of having this in the episode is how messed up she still is about Henry.

And actually, that’s built right into the title. I think the ghost girl story Daryl told (technically Carol told it because it was her subconscious ;D) was a symbol/foreshadow having to do with Beth. But from a more literal standpoint, this was all about Carol’s ghosts. The ghosts of the children she’s lost.

I think the foreshadowing is showing where her dark, destructive frame of mind will eventually take her, and what it will lead to in the show.

Also, it occurred to me this might support our self-harm theory. Much like after Daryl lost Beth (and remember Henry was heavily paralleled with her while alive) Carol might be self-harming to deal with her grief.

{Muji Gel Pens} So you’ve probably heard of these pens from just about every other studyblr, but it’s true! These pens are amazing! Honestly. writing with these pens is like writing with angel blood. As of right now, Muji doesn’t sell a pastel collection of these gel pens so I prefer to use the black ink to tie in with my pastel theme. (What follows was originally posted at Amy's Free Library of Rock, my actual Blog-blog as opposed to a Tumblr that I only usually REblog stuff on, but after @theselfexpress posted something yesterday I thought it might be good to have on Tumblr, too).

I'm kind of wincing at my own title. You know STORY is my favorite thing in the whole world. You know I'm all about the importance of stories and trying to separate the word "myth" from the concept of "falsehood." Story helps us give meaning to our existence. But we also sometimes use it to justify what we WANT to be true, even when it isn't. It's funny that this was a major theme in this season of Sherlock, too. I'd like to share my thoughts on that, sometime before it becomes too far past to be relevant. I'm also working on two different GeekMom articles at once (possibly three. Come Monday, if I don't get any more time to myself to type before then, definitely three). I also have (as usual, but at the same time worse than usual) a complete wreck of a house to deal with, a bunch of Christmas decor to put away, and a whole lot of commitments taking me out of the house, not to mention the day to day commitments of a family that somehow expects I should feed them everyday (even though they don't like much of anything I cook for them). There is SO MUCH I have to work on, and I haven't even mentioned settling back to do the final handsewing on my new butterfly brocade dress while watching the series of Soundbreaking I finally managed to get hold of, because that's pure leisure time. But I digress. (Often). I really want, right here right now, to address current events, yet again. We are at a scary moment of history. And if you disagree, this is probably due to the stories you are telling yourself, not the truth. And if you think the people who disagree ARE fully aware of the truth, you are also telling yourself stories, not seeing the full truth. The sad, frustrating, dangerous, and frankly somewhat traumatizing thing is, forces have transpired to fog the truth up for us. Gah, I know, that's vague. But that's the point. It would be nice to be able to point directly at Putin and blame the rise of totalitarianism on the Russian propaganda machine, but that's just part of it. It's easy to point to the new administration, which is doing it blatantly:

But again, that's just part of it. If we all called these things as they are, they wouldn't have any power. But the fog isn't coming out of a single sfx machine that we can just unplug. A spun story here, an appeal to People Like Me there, a information miasma without enough librarians, and countless individual stories-we-tell-ourselves being presented as truth in echo chambers among people telling similar stories, and you end up with a GREAT SMOG pouring in from countless directions. I'm super-sensitive to this fog, which is why I said it's somewhat traumatizing. It's traumatizing for ME. I don't like my mind being messed with. It makes me angry. It makes me frustrated. It makes me really really sad. And I feel like Cassandra when I see it happening and I can't get anyone to believe me (who doesn't already see it happening themselves). Let me show you how these things happen, using a tragedy that happened down the street from me this past fall as an example (skip the paragraph if you don't want to read a tragedy). Here is what happened, strict facts. A man who had been abusive and outright threatened to kill his pregnant wife showed back up to torment her and threaten her life again, even though she had a PFA against him. She called the police. Police showed up, too late, he's already shot and killed her and now he turns the gun out the window and shoots two officers, killing one, badly injuring the other. The police shut down the area and go on a manhunt for the rest of the morning, only to find the guy had killed himself right after. 'Kay. That's what happened. Here is one way the story could be presented, and was: the story of the police martyrs cut down in the line of duty by a cop-killer. This angle is still in evidence in our town-- the blue-and-black ribbons are still up all over, the signs that say "We stand with you, Cbg PD!" and "We salute our fallen officers." This angle really resonates with people, which is how my little neighborhood ended up making the national news. Implicit in this coverage is a "Those darn criminals keep killing our fine police officers!" message. And it goes farther, it gets turned into "Why do you keep accusing the police of brutality, can't you see THEY'RE the victims, THEY'RE the ones that keep getting SHOT DOWN because your lies about police brutality make people hate them?!" Whoa, slow down here. The guy shot them because he was a violent maniac and they were coming to arrest him, not because he was part of some cop-killer club or anything, lying in ambush just waiting to pick one off. Officer B truly did die in the line of duty, not out of some political demonstration. Now look at the way the story was NOT presented. I was surprised when the story made the national news because the sad fact is domestic abusers kill their partners ALL THE TIME, and you don't hear it on the national news unless one of them's famous or something really unusual and gruesome happened or, say, a cop got killed. Is this woman, and her unborn child, and all the other victims of domestic abuse, somehow less important than the police officers who were trying to save her? Is her life worth less? Why is her death not a national tragedy? Oh, sure, the police were in a way innocent bystanders, just doing their jobs, and they got shot. But isn't she equally innocent? Isn't it a tragedy that she's had to suffer at his hands and words all this time, that she tried to get help and protection and it ultimately didn't work? With all the black-and-blue ribbons all over town, in just one place do you see a memorial to her-- on the electric signpost of the drug store where she worked. Her coworkers love and miss her. But everywhere else she's forgotten. Now imagine what would have happened to the story the world saw if I change just one detail. You see, this woman was an immigrant from Egypt. Her killer husband was an all-american white boy with freakin' american flags waving off the back of his truck (I used to gawk at it, it was something). WHAT IF their ethnicities had been reversed? What if the killer was a Middle-Eastern immigrant and his wife was *gasp* blonde? If you don't think this would change the way this story was told, you haven't been paying much attention.

We all have our own Normals, based on where we grew up, where we live now, who we were raised by, and who we were raised among. When we see just a snapshot of another Normal, it's easy to jump to conclusions. Because this, people in that Normal must be this other thing. So we get a bit repulsed by the Others and retreat deeper into our own Normals, where everyone tells the same stories about What Normal IS that you do So we automatically frame what we see in terms of what we already consider normal. The story of the tragedy in my neighborhood takes on a different meaning depending on how you feel toward police officers, what your experiences or knowledge of domestic abuse is like, or how much you know about the culture to which any of the interested parties belong. We group people and experiences into "like me" and "not like me" categories in our heads, and when evidence goes contradictory to it, we rewrite our understanding of reality to fit. Sometimes we change our opinions. But other times we hold tighter to what we used to know as true. This is true across the board, but people who are still optimistic about our new president have had it particularly bad, lately. They were so excited to get a GOP president-- "GOP! Anti-Obama and Anti-Hillary! That means he's LIKE US!"-- that they fail to see that he's actually NOT. Oh, he's not a Democrat in disguise either, all right. He's not a normal president, period. But he must be good because he says things about Making America Great Again, and that's exactly what we want to hear, so....

Particularly fascinating are the folks in these pictures who admire his Godliness but wish he'd stop tweeting. I suppose because every tweet makes the UNGodliness stand out instead. It makes it hard for them to keep telling that story to themselves. If he keeps it up they may be forced to change their minds about him, and they'd rather not, so just shut up, Donny, and let them keep their fantasies, okay? Don't run away from reading me here yet, my conservative friends! Don't get complacent, my liberal ones! The Left has their own pretty stories, too. The most problematic one is lumping all President Trumpsterfire's supporters together with the worst of them. They've all made a serious mistake-- yes, you KNOW I think you've made a serious mistake, people who voted for him-- but not for nefarious purposes. Yes, they may kill people by taking away their health care, yes, they may invalidate people's marriages, yes, they may condone the persecution of millions of innocents because of their heritage or genetics, but they DON'T SEE IT THAT WAY. They know different Stories, they either don't HAVE all the facts or they can't make the facts fit into their Stories so they respin them as falsehoods. A few of them--a few-- really ARE hateful, bigoted scum. But when we call the REST hateful bigoted scum, too, it just makes it harder for them to listen to the actual truths you're telling that they need to hear! I've seen too many conservative friends bristling away from the movement toward justice because of this. I found the pictures from the Womens' Marches really inspiring yesterday. Then I saw a tweet from a conservative friend in response to someone who'd said LOOK HOW BEAUTIFUL EVERYONE UNITED EVERYONE IS WELCOME! "...not the Pro-Life ones," she replied bitterly. OUCH. I know what she means. I have no doubt that Pro-Life women WOULD have been and WERE welcomed into the marches, but a lot of Pro-Choicers have a problem how they talk about the Pro-Life movement-- they, too, lump people who genuinely believe in the sanctity of life with misogynists who just want to control women's sexuality. This is a particularly frustrating issue for me, because I grew up in a very actively Pro-Life extended family-- I've done the March for Life myself!-- and I thoroughly understand my family members' actual feelings on the matter, and I truly consider myself Pro-Life, even though from a political standpoint I am technically pro-choice.

I've had a real hard time at church since just before the election. Remember I said I hadn't lost my faith in God but was pretty disillusioned with the Church? Our pastor, he's a great guy y'know, but the Sunday before the election he said something like, "Yeah, we have to make a choice, and it looks like we have to make a choice between 'Bad' and 'Worse.' I can't tell you who to vote for, but I will say when you get down to it that the most important thing is protecting the Sanctity of Life, and we have to vote to stop abortion." And I'm just SERIOUSLY HAVE YOU EVEN LOOKED AT THIS GUY, HE IS ANTI-LIFE UNLESS IT'S HIS OWN! The fact that the Pro-Life movement has become SO FOCUSED on overturning Roe vs. Wade that they can no longer see that liberal movements have actually done far far more to REALLY protect the sanctity of life (I can't find the article I read about this last summer that uses facts to support this claim, but here's another article I found while looking for it that at least expresses the idea in more detail) is just... so depressing, really. And if we'd stop being so PARTISAN about it, we could SEE this, and actually WORK TOGETHER to truly protect LIFE. I think the most important thing we need to do is follow Haymitch's advice in Catching Fire, and remember who the real enemies are. I know we find it hard to forgive each other. I know we're angry, we're all so angry. But let's make sure we're focusing the anger in the right place. I saw someone say, "Trump didn't divide America!" -- true, we've already been divided. I've seen others say, "We need to stand together and put faith in the election process and our new administration." Or, the opposite, "We CANNOT play nice anymore. The Nazis weren't defeated because the Allies had a nice discussion and they all shook hands." BUT. A totalitarian government just LOVES when it can pit its citizens against each other. It LOVES to be all "if you're not for us your against us." There are people TRYING to get us to hate each other, pointing at all the worst actions of the "other" side instead of the many many more right actions. WE CANNOT LET THEM DO THIS. Civil war destroys so much. A revolution, on the other hand? If we all, ALL, take a good look around and see who the enemies REALLY are? It's rough when we're still divided over the stories we're getting, but the fact is the majority of people are GOOD PEOPLE. That original tweet was a little bitter, about how privileged white women are that they don't have THEIR protests broken up by riot police (when there isn't a riot). But Goldeen takes that and says LET'S USE THIS. You see what we can do when we ALL stand together? We can't let anyone try to divide us any more. We need to speak up even when we aren't the direct victims of an injustice. We need to listen to each other and not just assume that, oh, this is only about THEM, or that, oh, I don't see a problem so obviously there isn't really a problem they're just overreacting. If we open our eyes and hearts and stand together, we can keep the real enemies from their nefarious plans. We can make right mighty, instead of pretending might makes right.

And the fact this was worldwide. It's not just about us. It is about humans and the Earth.

We Investigated Peter’s Tattoos From ‘The Bachelorette’& Here’s What We Knew

It’s officially crunch time for Rachel Lindsay. After a week of hometown times, the 31 -year-old Bachelorette has narrowed her domain of potential fiancs down to three finalists, and only one of them has tattoos: the darling of Bachelor Nation, Peter Kraus.

Bryan may appear to have a slight produce in the battle for Rachel’s heart after his PD-Apacked hometown inspect, but if anyone iscapable of attracting ahead in crunch time, it’s Peter, the ab-master and fitness entrepreneurhimself.( Get it? Crunches ?)

But back to his tattoos. We can’t be sure how large-scale of a factor inked-ness versus non-inked-ness is going to be in Rachel’s final rose liturgy, but in the likely event Peter either winnings or becomes the next Bachelor, it’s merit getting to know what his tats are all about.

On the website for Peter’s personal practise corporation, he registers three-time Ironman finisher among his most prized achievements. In 2014, He finished 427 th in an area of 2,826 triathletes. I am impressed!

Naturally, he has celebrated his Ironman attainments with a triathlon-themed rib tattoo that peculiarity the Ironman logo, at least one biking man and perhaps a float and leading follower as well. Peter, contribute us better pictures of your tats!

A Buck With Some Leaves

Hismost unique and understated piece is a horse on his left bicep. This tat may be the one Peter nurses closest to his mettle too, considering it is situated, you know, right above his heart.

So what does it entail?

A sweep of online generators is telling me that for “the worlds largest” character bucks are a represent of grace and righteousnes very perfect forthe elegant and princely Peter. However, it also represents worth good-for-nothing Peter is a proud son of Wisconsin, and apparently a fan of the Milwaukee Bucks, so it could be that.

And as for the laurel leaves, they pretty universally representtriumph and accomplishment which, again, could be about the Ironman champ or his favorite basketball team.

Peter plays a rather large cross on his left bicep with a flag that says Into Your Hands, which is surely a gesture to his Christian sect. This could really help him win over Rachel, a woman of strong religion herself.

Also, aquick theme for Peter: Please do some kind of HQ shirtless photoshoot soon. The good beings of Bachelor Nation should not have to excavation as hard as I had to delve to find out what the first statement of that placard said. You’re a representation I know you can do it!

Peter’sleft shoulder tat which he describes as a family knot is some fairly standard Celtic ink. The circular motif is surrounded by some lettering that probably signifies something, but frankly, your guess is as good as mine as to what it might mean.

The shirtless HQ photoshoot might truly help here. What do those circular character charm? I’m gonna go with until proven otherwise.

What Really Happened in Charlottesville

RUSH: I’ve had some of my friends today say, “You know, it’s the first day that I would not want to have your job.”

I said, “Really? Why?”

“Because I couldn’t say what I really think.” I had four or five people tell me this today.

And I said, “Well, sit by, stand by, let me show you how it’s done.”

What’s that? No, no, no, I’m telling you that Barack Obama invited Black Lives Matter to the White House and honored them after Ferguson and after Baltimore. You’re not supposed to mention that, but there were two sides to this thing.

I was talking to Mr. Snerdley today, and I have a serious question. I understand completely the need to condemn the Klan and these neo-Nazis and these white supremacists and these idiots. And I’m really interested in why these people are becoming this way, because I think there are answers that will tell us a lot. There are just too many young men with too much time on their hands and too much ill influence is over this country. I understand it.

It ticks me off these people exist. It ticks me off that we have to deal with neo-Nazis and people fascinated with this stuff, and white supremacists, the Ku Klux Klan. But let’s remember something. They want to take down all these monuments. In fact, get this. Richmond, Virginia: “A Confederate Heritage Organization has asked Virginia for permission to hold a rally in September at the Robert E. Lee monument in Richmond.”

After this weekend, after all of this, we have a Confederate group heritage organization that has asked for a permit to gather at the Robert E. Lee monument. Now, what do you think is going on here? The point is that it’s not just the neo-Nazis and it’s not just the white supremacists and it’s not just these groups, but there’s a whole other range of similar hate groups on the left that are just as guilty and are just as invasive and probably more violent.

And I asked Snerdley today, “Could somebody explain to me why in the world only one side here is being condemned?” And why when somebody dares mention that there was more than one side here, that person gets condemned? Let’s listen to the president’s statement on this, because this is the fuel that started this media fire and everything else, condemnation aimed at President Trump. This is Saturday afternoon in Bedminster, New Jersey. We have two bites that represent the president’s statement. Here’s number one.

THE PRESIDENT: We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry, and violence, on many sides, on many sides. It’s been going on for a long time in our country. Not Donald Trump, not Barack Obama. It’s been going on for a long, long time. And there’s no place in America. What is vital now is a swift restoration of law and order and the protection of innocent lives.

RUSH: So he did not single out the Nazis and he did not single out the white supremacists. He mentioned, as you heard there, many sides, both sides, many sides, hatred, bigotry, violence on many sides. It’s undeniably true. It’s undeniably true that there is hatred and bigotry and violence sponsored on both sides. All you have to do is revisit recent history and college campuses, or go to Ferguson, Missouri, or go to Baltimore Maryland, it’s all over the place.

And let’s not forget this, either. Remember during the presidential campaign at Trump rallies we have learned that a guy named Robert Creamer, who visited the Obama White House over a hundred times and Obama — well, the Oval Office some 45 to 50 times. This guy admitted to hiring militant protesters to infiltrate Trump rallies as Trump supporters and then start causing violence. He proudly admitted it.

It was a Project Veritas video. He admitted that he was bought and paid for by Hillary Clinton. So we know this happens on both sides. It undeniably happens on both sides. We also know that most of this stuff is instigated primarily by one side. And yet that side I guess is to never be mentioned. In order for Trump to have passed this test, he was only supposed to condemn one side in this dispute. And he didn’t do that. Very obviously, Trump was supposed to condemn the white supremacists. He was supposed to condemn the Nazis and stop. But he didn’t. Here’s the second part of the statement.

THE PRESIDENT: We have to come together as Americans with love for our nation and true affection and really — and I say this so strongly — true affection for each other. Our country is doing very well in so many ways. We have so many incredible things happening in our country. So when I watch Charlottesville, to me it’s very, very sad. Above all else, we must remember this truth: No matter our color, creed, religion, or political party, we are all Americans first. We love our country; we love our God; we love our flag; we’re proud of our country.

RUSH: May as well not have mattered. You know why. It’s very obvious to me what they’re after here. And to illustrate I want to bring back a story that some of you might remember from my fertile memory. I believe it was the first term of George W. Bush, and there was a White House press conference, a presidential press conference, the first that had been taken in a while. And a theme developed before the press conference began.

The theme was the media was going to ask Bush to admit that he had made mistakes. Not specific mistakes; just admit that he had made mistakes. The media coverage of Bush up at that point was he’s an idiot, a lot of things had gone wrong, the Iraq war, this kind of thing. And the press conference went on for 35 minutes, and every reporter, every reporter who got a question led off, “But will you admit you’ve made mistakes?” They wanted Bush to admit that he was responsible for what the media said was going wrong.

Same thing here. The media and the left want Donald Trump to condemn all of these groups, the white supremacists and the Nazis, because they want to tie him to them. They want to tie Trump to what is known as the Alt-Right, which I guess is made up of these neo-Nazis and the white supremacists and so forth. But there’s a similar group on the left. They are violent, they are intimidating, and they are very violently active, and they instigate things. They travel. They are bought and paid for in many cases. They, I guess, are not to be mentioned.

We don’t mention them because I guess they’re made up of minority groups and, as such, their actions are either valid or are to be understood, but the lunatics on the right are just that. Do you know what Reuters did today? Reuters stylebook refuses their reporters permission to use the word “terrorism” in any story about militant Islam or a genuine terror attack nowhere in the world at Reuters. It’s forbidden. They called this action “terrorism” five times in a story. So they’ve been willing to broom their own stylebook, which, again, is illustrative of what is really happening here.

Sheryl Gay Stolberg at the New York Times tweeted the following: “A few rapid thoughts from Charlottesville. Number one, striking how many of the white nationalists were young people, almost entirely men.” Her second tweet: “The hard left seemed as hate-filled as the Alt-Right. I saw club wielding Antifa beating white nationalists being led out of the park.” So here’s an acknowledgment from the media, from the New York Times, that there was an equal amount of hate from the left in this incident.

And then this in the Washington Post by David Weigel — believe me, who is nowhere near the right side of the aisle. Headline: “Fear of ‘Violent Left’ Preceded Events in Charlottesville.” I had to have three people read this to make sure that I wasn’t missing something in this. “On Saturday afternoon, shortly before her camera captured a car plowing through left-wing activists in Charlottesville, killing one and injuring more than a dozen others, Faith Goldy warned that the left was spinning out of control.”

“‘Hundreds and hundreds of Antifa, weird BLM [Black Lives Matter] idiots dressed like clowns,’ said Goldy… ‘This is okay, as long as you’re not the Alt-Right. The Alt-Right wasn’t allowed to demonstrate any show of force.’ As if on cue, activists began chanting ‘black lives matter’ in the background of Goldy’s shot. ‘Chant BLM, and all of a sudden the cops don’t care!’ she said. ‘Where are the riot police now?’” Well, the riot police were told to stand down. Somebody had to tell the riot police to stand down.

In New York City, NYPD officials said this would have never been allowed to happen in New York. The riot police would have never let these two groups get anywhere near each other. They would not have allowed an automobile to get anywhere near any of this. There would have been barricades and the New York PD says, “We would…” Now, hindsight, I know, is always 20/20, but the NYPD people are speaking in terms of policy. And when you had a volatile situation like this they would have never let these two groups get together.

But in Charlottesville the police stood down. Why? A lot of this stuff I say to you doesn’t make sense. I understand this, I know you do too but on the surface doesn’t make sense. Who would order the cops to stand down and why? This has become the latest story and the latest excitement that animates and energizes the Get Rid of Trump movement in the Washington establishment and in the media — and if you think this issue’s gonna fade away after today, you have another thing coming.

This is about violence between two hate groups with no association with Donald Trump or the Republican Party, but the media is doing everything it can to associate the Nazis and the skinheads and the white supremacists with not just Trump, but the Republican Party. That’s why the Republican Party, everybody in it ran to the microphones and condemned it. They did everything, ’cause they know that if they don’t go out and say that, the Drive-Bys and everybody else on the left are gonna do everything they can to associate this with the Republican Party.

When the fact remains that on the line of ideological trace, both of these groups are extreme leftists. The Nazis were not on the right of anything, and white supremacists are not on the right of anything. All of these groups are to the left of center. But the Republican Party knows that they had to come out and condemn this or else, which takes me back to Trump’s statement. Now, somebody besides Trump had input in this statement, and you have to ask yourself:

Was there nobody in the White House comms office who knew that the statement that Trump made was going to cause this? Is there nobody who knew this? Somebody in that comms office had to know that a statement like this was going to provide fodder for exactly what is happening now. (interruption) What do you mean, what would I have done different? Name the names! If you’re gonna go out, instead of condemning all sides or both sides, say it!

Condemn the Nazis! Condemn the neo-Nazis and the white supremacists and then condemn Black Lives Matter. Condemn all of them. They’re all reactionary fringe groups on the left. The problem is, folks, that the left-wing fringe groups are being portrayed as mainstream. Not just this weekend, but from their outset. Left-wing protest groups are portrayed as mainstream — and, in fact, they’re portrayed as justified because their grievances date back to the founding of the country. And their outrage is understandable.

We must take every step we can to understand it. Okay, get somebody in the comms office who understands how to write and give a statement here that is going to limit this kind of reaction, although I think they would have found a way to come at Trump no matter what he had said. Let’s say he had done my idea. Say he identifies the neo-Nazis and identifies the white supremacists by using those terms, but then identifies the left-wing groups by name, too. He would still come under attack for being judgmental of the left-wing groups.

I understand that. It pains me to see all of this. It pains me because I understand exactly what’s behind all this. Charlottesville is Ferguson. Charlottesville is Baltimore. It’s going to be used as an excuse for the media to smear their political enemies. Trump first, conservatives second, Republicans third. But this incident has nothing to do with Trump, it has nothing to do with the Republican Party, and it has nothing to do with conservatism.

What it does have to do with is a minority of sick people drawn to sick fringe groups. White supremacists and the Nazis and the extremist far-left Antifa deserve each other. They’re bound by hate. They’re both bound by racism, yet pretend they have nothing in common. By all means, investigate what happened in Charlottesville. Who were the organizers? Who funded them? Nothing would surprise me with the Antifa. I want to know.

I want an in-depth investigation of just what happened and who these people are because we already know how these people operated during the Republican primaries at Trump rallies. We know they were bought and paid for and they were trained by a guy named Robert Creamer who is married to a Democrat member of Congress. George Soros is in the mix as well. (whispering) But you’re not supposed to say any of this today. No, you can’t say this today. Today is reserved for 100% condemnation of Trump and his association with these right-wing — so-called right-wing fringe groups.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: You know, folks, togetherness, these two groups — the fringe, the Nazis, the white supremacists, and the Black Lives Matter and that crowd on the left. It seems to me that bringing these two sides together shouldn’t be that hard.

ANNOUNCER: Why are you two guys fighting when both of you have so much in common?

WHITE SUPREMACIST: Like what?

BLM LEFTIST: Like what?

ANNOUNCER: Well, white supremacists don’t like Jews, and leftists hate Israel.

WHITE SUPREMACIST: You do?

BLM LEFTIST: Yeah!

ANNOUNCER: Progressives hate the Catholic Church, and so do the Klan members.

WHITE SUPREMACIST: He’s right.

BLM LEFTIST: Hmm.

ANNOUNCER: Neither one of you really cares if poor African-American kids make it at school or not.

BLM LEFTIST: They should all be in government schools!

WHITE SUPREMACIST: With their own kind.

BLM LEFTIST: To avoid white privilege.

WHITE SUPREMACIST: Uh… Yeah.

ANNOUNCER: And did you know Nazi party members were not just fascists, they were also committed socialists?

BLM LEFTIST: I guess I can at least meet you halfway, then.

WHITE SUPREMACIST: Me, too, brother!

ANNOUNCER: Doesn’t it feel good to get along?

BLM LEFTIST: Absolutely.

WHITE SUPREMACIST: Well (pause), I reckon.

ANNOUNCER: Great! Then why don’t you two guys just get the hell out of town?

WHITE SUPREMACIST: Okay. W-w-we’re going.

BLM LEFTIST: But we’ll be back!

WHITE SUPREMACIST: Protesting you.

BOTH: Together!

WHITE SUPREMACIST: Mmm-hmm.

RUSH: They’ve got more in common than they know. Anyway, still no statement from President Trump. Supposed to name the KKK and neo-Nazi groups.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Here’s Doug McKelway. He’s at Fox. This is from yesterday afternoon on Fox News, his report about his experience at the protest in Charlottesville on Saturday.

MCKELWAY: People are intent on causing havoc and causing damage and even as wounded were brought out of the park, the police were standing idly by. I was standing by a cordoned off area where the police had set up as a staging area — the state police — and they said you can come in here, this is a safe area. But when the tear gas started to fly — thrown by protesters — the police themselves began to evacuate that. I asked the guy who was in charge, I said, “Where are you going?” He said, “We’re leaving. It’s too dangerous.” They had an opportunity to nip this thing in the bud and they chose not to.

RUSH: “Chose not to,” hich leads me to ask a question: Who wanted this to happen? And I firmly believe there’s an answer to that, and I would hope that an investigation would uncover that information because this need not have happened. Somebody thinks, somebody thought they would benefit from this, just like somebody thought they would benefit from Ferguson, just like somebody or some people thought they would benefit from Baltimore.

Somebody thought they would benefit from this. That’s why this happened. The cops let it happen. Somebody told them to stand down. I don’t believe that a police force in unison chickened out and ran for the tall grass once the protesters started throwing tear gas. There are just a lot of unanswered questions about this. The media wants it to be a certain way, and so that’s their narrative. The media narrative is that a bunch of skinheads, neo-Nazi, Klan members decided to march in Virginia in protest of removing Civil War statues such as Robert E. Lee.

And then some very peaceful, progressive, anti-bigot and anti-racist mainstream Americans showed up to protest the people who wanted to defend Civil War monuments and the deranged Klan and the white supremacists then started killing the peaceful, progressive, average, ordinary American citizens. That is the narrative that the media wants everybody to believe. In fact, there were two opposite, opposing, warring factions: Those made up of the Nazis and skinheads and the white supremacists and the Antifa. It’s short for “anti-fascists.”

These are the people that show up everywhere. Every global summit, every meeting of anyone is gonna be attracting any major media attention, this group and the anarchists show up and they start setting things on fire and they’ve been doing it since the sixties. And they’re bought and paid for. They showed up in Ferguson. They showed up in Baltimore. They showed up in Seattle over the weekend! They are not people who are sitting around minding their own business watching baseball on Saturday afternoon who then learn that the Nazis are coming to town and decide to get up off the couch and go protest it.

Nobody like that was involved in this. Two supreme fringe groups. The difference is that Republicans are supposed to condemn all of the skinheads and the neo-Nazis and the white supremacists while Barack Obama invites the left-wing groups to the White House and honors them, people like Black Lives Matter. Now, I know we’re not supposed to compare presidents, and I know we’re not really supposed to try to illustrate the hypocrisy because it never works. So I won’t mention Barack “My Grandmother’s a Typical White Person” Obama and his meetings with Robert Creamer at the White House.

Robert Creamer is the man who was hiring protesters to go disrupt Donald Trump rallies during the presidential campaign. He was paying them! He was hiring professional protesters and the homeless, anybody they could go to go to Trump rallies and pretend to be Trump supporters beating up on people in there as well as protesters of Trump. Creamer is a convicted felon who was caught up in a pair of sting operations. He visited the White House 342 times, according to Obama’s records, including several visits to the family residence and the Oval Office.

Robert Creamer was caught on one hidden camera video discussing ways to commit large-scale voter fraud and talking in another about paying liberal activists to start fights and otherwise disrupt Donald Trump rallies. Oh, and I know we’re not supposed to mention the guy that attempted to assassinate a bunch of House Republicans who were engaging in baseball practice also in Virginia. We’re not supposed to mention that — and when we do, supposed to understand he might have been psychologically disturbed and might not have been all there.
