currently watching the 1993 smb movie and like. from a completely detached perspective and going into this with 0 expectations its actually off to a fun start. i LOVE the way mario is characterized here; it’s infinitely funny to me and him and luigi’s dynamic being somewhat turned on it’s head is actually? really fun? like mario does really well as the more cautious one while luigi is the reckless “go with your gut” type. idk it’s enjoyable even if it’s way out there

however i will say that the way luigi interacts with daisy is so off-putting and dumb. bye. like yes he IS supposed to make a fool of himself while mario wingmans, that’s cute, but it’s obvious to me that he’s not very emotionally intelligent nor does he seem to genuinely like daisy as a person? idk it just seems like he’s being shallow and only interested in her body. i could be proven wrong but idk the vibes i’m getting are so rancid atm [AND ON THAT NOTE i simply do not think daisy would hop in a van with two strange men she just met! sorry!]

but regardless of whatever happens i can rest easy knowing luigi kissed mario on the forehead before jumping in the portal. wtf that was SO cute and goofy like for all its faults this movie gave us some cute brotherly interactions and i am excited to see how the movie pans out 🫡

I just watched the 1993 Super Mario Bros movie, and the chokehold big age gap Mario and Luigi has on me right now is insane. Mario being extremely overprotective of the boy he raised? Muah *chefs kiss*. I now want a story where Luigi is in school, and Mario just tries and helps him with his homework or something. I need more domestic Mario and Luigi. I just wanna see the two of them sitting in their apartment in Brooklyn watching tv together, I wanna see them enjoy walks, do actual plumbing, I wanna see Mario teach Luigi plumbing.

No no no! You're so right. You are so very very right. I love the double-date dinner scene when Luigi starts talking about his relationship with Mario.

L: 'Cos Mario, he brought me up! He's been my mother my whole life. M: Hey! L: I mean father. My father. He's been my father, my uncle, my brother - everybody!

Luigi doesn't even know who his parents are. And if Mario legitimately raised Luigi alone while impoverished and without any family he could rely on, he did such a fantastic job?? It's no wonder he's the most abrasive of all the Marios (not that I have a problem with that. Grumpy Mario my beloved.)

Don't even get me started on Mario being his little brother's wingman, trying to feed Luigi dialogue under his breath when he's attempting to chat up Daisy. Also him aggressively backseat driving and trying not to panic while Luigi is a maniac behind the wheel? Putting himself through hell to help his little bro rescue the woman he loves? One of the best parts was when, after Bowser President Koopa attempts to gouge Luigi's eyes out in a moment of rage, Mario jumps in and grapples Koopa to get him off. He gets tased for his efforts, but succeeds in keeping his bro's eyeballs intact. Then in the devo chamber in the next scene you can see Mario nervously checking on Luigi in the background, cupping his face as he ensures there's no serious damage done.

Sorry Mario, Luigi was kinda right to describe you as his mother.

Do you think Mario's portrayal in the movie was a little too different from the games? I understand that they needed him to have a more well rounded personality, but I just can't help but wonder why they didn't make him more of a soul who is defined by having this sort of contagious positivity with a skip in every step. Think characters like Joy (Inside Out), Pinkie Pie (MLP), Steven Universe, Star Butterfly, Mabel Pines, Rapunzel (Tangled) and so on.

Mario of course still has a can-do determinator attitude about life, and he does still have his moments of excitement, but it's a lot more subdued. He spends a lot of the movie being rather irritable, somewhat impatient, and burnt out. Of course this can still happen to characters that are defined by being consistently upbeat and positive, but that's only when they hit very serious rock bottom moments.

Do you think the sequel should try and make Mario's personality a little more like his portrayal in the games or should they just stick with what they did for the first one?

I think a more happy-go-lucky Mario could work, hypothetically, but not with the backstory he was given in the movie, which leans pretty hard on him being an underdog in every sense.

The difference between Mario and all the characters you listed is Mario was neither sheltered, nor put in any position where he was encouraged to continually exhibit a bubbly, positive attitude.

Mario is a Brooklyn man who has just recently managed to work his way up from hard labor to blue collar, and has spent most of his life having his dreams and ambitions dismissed and put down.

He's by no means disillusioned with the world, but he's built up defenses to make sure everyone knows that neither he nor his brother are easy targets to be bullied or walked all over. He is optimistic, but he's swimming against the current, and it's worn him down. (Heck, judging by the concept art, it looks like there were plans to make him even more exhausted and despondent than he was in the final product.)

But now that Mario's in an environment that values his ambition and optimism, he's got room to develop into something closer to the Super Mario we're all familiar with. As much as I hope for some slight change in character between movies, I can't say I'd be too disappointed if he stays the same on account of how much I really really love Hothead Stressball McDaddyIssues Mario. But I'm banking on him being at least a good deal happier now that he's living in The Mushroom Kingdom.

It's a nice little mini-arc to give him in what was essentially Mario's origin story.

Ok but hot take but Bowser dosen't work as a serious villian.

In almost all media he's depicted as a sweet goofy dork who genuine cares for princess peach and would never hurt her. Hell he deeply cares for Mario and Luigi even if he is annoyed with them y'know? Like I thoroughly enjoyed the Mario movie, it's not amazing but a fun romp. But man I really hope that the second movie has him join the main cast against a new villian and tbh it's probably going to be Wario.

The only media where he does work as a really good villian is in early western media like the club Nintendo comics, the dic cartoons and the 1993 Mario movie bc they make him a cruel heartless monster. And honestly that dosent really feel like Bowser.

Bowser is an anti hero who's just a big ole simp for peach. Honestly I hope that future Mario games have Bowser as the 4th main playeble charecter alongside Mario, Luigi and Peach, and just do what Kirby does and introduce a threatening new villian every new game.
