is the sentimentalist in the room with us right now? ...maybe they are
Tumblr media
and the natural world? perhaps we might also say that of a daytime sky
Tumblr media
he's suggested something blue and gold in-show as well
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
now where have I seen that color combination before
oh
Tumblr media
blue skies and everything, huh
hm, and what was being discussed elsewhere one minute and thirty seconds before that decor suggestion?
Tumblr media
ok
(sources and rambling under the cut)
1. Season 1, Episode 4
2, 4, 8. Season 2, Episode 6
3. Prince Lestat - Anne Rice
5. Peeled LemonĀ with SlicesĀ - DavidĀ Hockney
6. Golden Age Wallpaper - Ai Weiwei
7. Set photo of Daniel's apartment
So anyway, everyone's probably already seen the Book!Loumand Trinity Gate ceiling (#3 included here) getting connected to Daniel's place but it might be interesting to also round up some data points from within the show itself that may further support "Armand influenced that apartment/that is the former Loumand NYC home/that is perhaps even a former DM NYC home" theories.
It's intriguing that the tapes' delivery is brought up so late in Season 2, perhaps trying refresh this thread in the audience's minds. This isn't the first time the vampires' access to Daniel's life has been questioned and the short timing between the lines in #8 and #4 is striking with #4's potential implications. And if we're really examining these plates of corn, we might also note the wallpaper's design features a theme of surveillance and control, which is certainly a choice for one's living room in general, all the more so with Armand's known behavior, and more than a little interesting in the context of potential decades of stalking.
Is any of this a smoking gun for anything in particular? No! But it sure does seem like something sus is afoot.
And it's interesting for a possible sentimentalist to suggest the colors of a possible past home as the interview neared its end. What might he have hoped to recapture?

ā—ļøMild arcane spoilers ā—ļø
Miiight ruffle some feathers.
Not EVEN going to lie, unnecessary ship wars aside, the fan base has developed such a deep love and understanding for these characters (because letā€™s be honest, there are some pretty intelligent people giving eye opening analyses) that after the finale, it appears that we have a better understanding of them than the actual writers.
We deserved better as the audience after all the hype over the years, all the waiting, even after some episodes got leaked a while ago, most of us remained respectful and waited to see what this season would bring us. The core characters ABSOLUTELY deserved better as well.
It felt as if I was watching all of the charactersā€™ development be erased in real time, or become sidelined and nearly mute after being propped up to appear as if they were going to have a significant arc.
With the amount of episodes we had, it felt like they were trying to cram a bunch of different storylines into one 9 episode season and that left us with annoying plot holes and rushed sequences.
And Iā€™m just gonna say it.
If a certain relationship needed to be sacrificed if it meant that other characters had the proper development they needed and DESERVED, then I would have preferred that much, MUCH more than that undercooked finale.
Donā€™t. Even. Get me started on that caitvi scene. In the cell? Right after that conversation she had with her sister? Donā€™t give me that nonsense about how itā€™s vi reclaiming her power or something. (An actual weird ass statement from Amanda Overton in a Q&A video about how that was Vi reclaiming and working through her trauma in that cell).
No apology? No groveling for forgiveness? That little argument they had lasted like five seconds and didnā€™t even address the earlier conflict that happened in the show after cait left vi. And before any of you say ā€œcait apologized with her actionsā€
I donā€™t care. Two things can be true at once, she can and should have apologized directly as well as displayed that with her actions.
Moving on to Mel??? We did not nearly have enough time to explore her new abilities as a mage, her armor, and her connection to the black rose. As I said, the storylines this season should have been more refined so we could focus on a central group of characters. They did nothing but hint at her armor from the end of season 1 all the way up until now.
Also maybe Iā€™m hallucinating, but did we ever find out what happened to the firelightā€™s tree?? Thatā€™s one of the main reasons Ekko and Heimerdinger went to the lab isnā€™t it? HELLO?
Next on my list, Jinx. This girl has suffered to no end.
- Lost her whole family except for Vi.
- Almost died once and was brought back to life.
- Tried to end her life several more times
And you slap us all in the face by writing her off?
ā€œOh but she may not be GONE gone, look at the glitching at the end!"
I. Donā€™t. Care. Itā€™s the principle.
Iā€™m sick and tired of seeing characters that struggle with mental health and keep having one bad event after another happen to them, never receiving a proper ending. What messages are the writers sending with this? That death is basically the answer because thereā€™s no hope for them? Cool. That was not an honorable act of self sacrifice, that was plain insulting.
Instead, if they still really wanted to have a Jinx redemption arc and a chance to rekindle her relationship with Vi, having her tap into engineering for the betterment of Zaun would have been the better route.
We should have gotten an extra extended episode since this is last season for the Piltover/Zaun region, and for Jinx and Vi's story. I really want to blame Riot for being greedy and possibly becoming too cocky with the popularity of Arcane that they think anything would suffice because It's Arcane.

Um actually Vander isn't fully gone (the complete proof) (HEAVY SPOILERS)
spoilers for the entirety of arcane s2 obviously watch it if you haven't or don't if you care about your mental health
Tumblr media
Although we see his memories/emotions get acetoned away in s2e7s final scene, and the following battle with his kids has him attacking them pretty rabidly.
But wait...
Tumblr media
Tumblr compressed this image to hell, so you'll just have to trust me.
Tumblr media
If you look closely as he lunges at Vi and Jinx, a tear appears in his right eye (not previously seen)
Tumblr media
We can see it better after Jinx hits him with her rocket.
Tumblr media
After Vik gets Jayced we see these tears on full display. The size of the tears is significantly larger, so we can assume they were spilled as Warwick corrupted the girls with void magic, indicating some amount of awareness.
Of course immediately after the screencap above Warwick attacks Vi, Jinx does a side slam and the father daughter duo barely get caught by Vi's gauntlet
Tumblr media
Jinx and Vander plummet to their presumed deaths (they are both alive, but for dramaā€™s sake, let's pretend). Vander/Warwick doesn't attack Jinx despite her being entirely in his grasp.
He could shred her right then and there. A mindless beast would, he doesn't.
Tumblr media
Vander holds Jinx gently, he doesn't dig into her flesh, he just holds her and lets Jinx cup his face.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see a flashback of Vander watching the girls sleep. Since he is the only conscious one in this situation this implies is that it is not Vi's or Jinxes memory, only Vanders.
Reader, you might think, well how the hell does he remember anything didn't he get mind wiped an episode ago. To that I respond I don't fucking know, but arcane is VERY intentional with its details and nothing else makes sense.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jinx escapes, this isn't even subtle. She does so BEFORE the bomb blows. In no universe would Jinx break Warwicks grip, hell, she's toast if any stronger character grabs her (fe. Ambessas bodyguard). Do you know what that implies??
Since Warwick wasn't incapacitated at that point, HE WILLINGLY LET HER GO. He used the last shreds of humanity to give his daughter a second chance at life.....
I AM NOT OK
Below there's the more speculative part I'm not sure of.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Warwick, unlike Jinx, didn't escape into the air ducts. But we've seen him survive significant explosions in the very same episode, moreover he survived Isha blowing him up with the force of 3 magic orbs, and yet he lived.
This can only imply that Warwick/Vander survived. Of course the previously mentioned flashback shows Vander blowing a candle out which can symbolize his life ending, but I'd say it's more likely a subtle way of showing the destruction of their family unit as it was.
I am aware this is complete copium yet maybe Jinx took him wherever the fuck she went on that airship to heal him up while sparing Vi from fighting their unkillable werewolf dad over and over again. Vander is still in there are proved by this long ass post, and I think Jinx knows that. I don't think she could give up on Vander like she wanted Ekko and Vi to give up on her.

a/n: This is a long one for you guys :) thank you to @ivysprophecy @kimoralov3 for letting me annoy the shit out of you as i bounce ideas off of y'all.

Off Topic Official Transcript
12:30Ā
Cleo: so Rafe, you did a recent shoot with loewe.Ā
Y/n: [you bite your lip subtly] oh my god yeah, i remember hearing Sarah talk about it. you looked really good.Ā
Rafe: oh yeah? [he raises his eyebrow] thank you. it was really fun, the crew and photographer were great. iā€™ve always wanted to do a shoot with them and i was so grateful when i got the chance.Ā
Rafe: i know itā€™s yallsā€™ podcast but if you could work with any brand, which would it be?Ā
Cleo: easy, easy man. either gucci or miu miu.Ā
Y/n: i think for me it would probably be ysl or prada.Ā
Rafe: yeah, youā€™d be a prada girl? [he asks cockily]
Y/n: yeah, havenā€™t you seen me rock a pair of prada sunnies. i always serve face. [you smile and then give a model face to him and cleo]Ā
Cleo: that is correct. my girl always looks good, especially in prada.Ā
Rafe: oh, i have no doubt. [he smiles at you brightly]
Tumblr media
26:45
Y/n: [laughing at something Rafe said before hand]
Cleo:[smirks] so rafe, we have this recurring segment of this show called ā€œbe mineā€ and itā€™s where we ask the guest, whatā€™s their ideal type or what they are looking for in a relationship.
Y/n: [stops laughing and is subtly looking at Cleo with bewilderment]Ā
Cleo: and since we donā€™t have more than one guest today, y/n will share with you!Ā
Y/n: [looks at Cleo with a look of confusion] i will?Ā
Cleo:[gives her look]Ā
Y/n: i guess i will be today.Ā
Rafe: [chuckles at your reaction] i have only been in two really serious relationships and they were both totally different experiences. the first person i'm really good friends with still but that relationship taught me all the things i did want like someone adventurous, kind, and someone who can communicate. in this life we live in the media. i never wanna be the last person to know something about my partner. i think from my last relationship we were very private and i didnā€™t really mind it but sometimes i wanted to share cute photos of themā€¦ [he shifts in the chair and manspreads a bit]
Cleo: [she looks at you and gives you a smirk at the mention at photography]
Rafe (continued): especially since i really like film photography and really i couldnā€™t share my photos, so i wanna find someone who's comfortable with that for sure. and by no means do i think i am perfect, i think i got somethings to work on but those are just somethings that are really important to me. [he finishes speaking and looks at you for your reaction.]
Cleo: [is smirking in her seat] damn model boy knows what he wants.Ā
Rafe: [laughs] sometimes if you want something you just gotta put it out there. [he shrugs and smirks]
Cleo: ya know y/n here loves film photography? has a whole account dedicated to it too.
Y/n: [your eyes blunge out hoping sheā€™d be quiet] yeah, i do but itā€™s nothing.Ā
Rafe: [smirks and leans forward and places his elbow on the chair arm and places his chin on his knuckles] itā€™s not, nothing. itā€™s cute, sweetheart. [he gives you a kind smile] so, what are you looking for? [he points with his chin to you]
Y/n: umā€¦ i agree with a lot of what race has to say. i especially feel the same about communication, in my last relationship there was a really big lack of it and that along with cheating was the end of our relationship.Ā
Rafe: [frowns at the mention that you have been cheated on]
Y/n: So now i think i need someone who is willing to take things slowly and understand that it takes me a second to trust their intentions. but i also really want someone who likes to travel because i love traveling and seeing new places. also my friends have to give the stamp of approval because they are everything to me. [you smile at cleo]
Y/n: but my ideal type, i donā€™t know, tall, kind, intelligent, passionate, empathetic, and i donā€™t think it would hurt anyone if he was pretty on the eyes either.[you smile widely]Ā
Rafe: i think it's really raw and real of you to talk about trust in that way because i feel the same way.Ā
Cleo: you two have a lot in common huh?Ā

Of My 50+ Favorite BLs these are the 10 I rewatch the most
So you could call these my favorite comfort foods. Everything on this list got a rating of 10/10 or 9/10 from me.
10 Most Comforting BLs
(for me, in order of most recently rewatched at the top)
Tumblr media
Our Dating Sim
Korea 2023 Viki (watch the series not the movie)
This is a perfect short form KBL, an office set reunion romance featuring geeks that really suits 8 eps with no fluff and no chaff. Just comforting and yummy. I adored every aspect from the casting to the pristinely simple premise to the quietly smooth execution. Sure itā€™s low stakes, but that makes it high domesticity and extremely warm and gentle. This is a fuzzy blanket of a story - a cozy BL. It lives in my rewatch pile and you know whatā€™s best about it? Every single episode is in that pile. Thereā€™s no skipping with this one, it might be good natured and calmly sweet but itā€™s tight and the pacing is excellent.
Tumblr media
Cosmetic Playlover
Japan 2024 Gaga
The most recent release on this list, it came out this year and I've already rewatched it 5x. I love this little show. It's a classic office BL about the older workaholic who loves his job and the younger upstart who unexpectedlyĀ loves his boss. Itā€™s a hyung romance where everybody is extremely earnest and sweet and pretty about everything. Except our seme, who is slightly unhinged and a little obsessed in all the ways one likes best from Japan (if one is me).Ā Plus the kisses are good! Utterly charming unexpected gem of a show. What fun!
Tumblr media
Jun and Jun
Korea 2023 Viki
A delightful office romance about an ex-idol who joins cubical life only to find his new boss is his first love. Other boys are sniffing around too. Operative word being "sniffing" as much of this romance involves smell. With a snappy (sometimes even raunchy) script, enjoyable sides, a pretty as peaches cast, and decent chemistry this show made up for in style what it lacked in substance. I like fluff. I loved this. I smiled every moment I was watching. My only caution is this is for fans of the BL genre only, I donā€™t think itā€™ll work for anyone else.
Tumblr media
My Personal Weatherman
AKA Taikan Yoho
Japan 2023 Gaga
This style of live action yaoi really only works from Japan. Basically: boys who fell in love in college end up living together but are so repressed they don't realize they're in love. It's higher heat than we usually get from Japan's HEA stuff, and that aspect is also very well done, but it leaned into the "why don't they just talk for fuck's sake?" trope which is only exacerbated into undiluted frustration by the fact that they're already fucking. It's great, but watching requires more patience than usual, even for Japan. That said it's also bruisingly romantic. Emphasis on bruise.
Tumblr media
Unintentional Love Story
Korea 2023 iQIYI
OMG the plot! Uke forced into a totally understandable betrayal, falling in love despite himself, put into a corner he can't get out of, the AGONY, the PAIN in those gorgeous eyes. Gah. Okay, so: A boy loses his job due to trumped-up corruption charges accidentally discovers his ex-boss's favorite artist, now a recluse. Evil manager offers him his job back, if he can convince the artist to rejoin society. Instead, they fall in love. I found the artist a bit stiff and reserved but Gongchan (maknae of B1A4) is a fucking GIFT - he carried this show (which I do not expect from the idol element). He was luminous with extraordinarily expressive eyes, just drown in the emoting abyss. The external conflict, social tension and pressure is complex and beautifully executed, plus Korea gave us legit side dishes (NOT a love triangle, hally-fucking-luya). All that said, when I rewatch this it's usually just the second half, but WHAT a ride.
Tumblr media
Semantic Error
Korea 2022 Viki
Sexy older boy discovers pouty younger boy has outed him as a slacker, starts out bullying him, accidentally falls madly in love instead. Korea hits it entirely out of the Parks by doing a university BL with everything we expect from BL just done exactly right. Korea's signature quality executed perfectly with added bonus good story, great pacing, stunning visuals, and fantastic chemistry. You cannot ask for more from a BL, let alone a KBL. Another one where the rewatch is mostly just the second half.
Tumblr media
Old Fashion Cupcake
Japan 2022
This show had me from the moment they broke the egg yolk with the chopsticks in the opening credits. Itā€™s about a younger man with a long cherished crush on his boss (ten years older and going through a mid life crisis) who decides to save and seduce said boss with pancakes. Itā€™s wholesome, comforting, sexy, and a very necessary narrative about still having hope, interests, and openness to affection at any age. Itā€™s a stunningly filmed late-in-life comg of age/queerness story packaged in a subtle critique of expectations around masculinity, love, and lonelinessā€¦ and itā€™s beautiful.
Yes yes. But the bit you know you want to rewatch is that long shot with the bite kiss. YOU KNOW you wanna.
Tumblr media
Seven Days
Japan 2015
Ha! I faked you out 'cause this wasn't at the top but of course it's on the list! One of the best live action yaois ever made, with perfectly structured angst, fantastic characters and acting, and no problematic tropes (rare in Japanese BL). Older boy dares the hot af younger one to date him for a week. Turns out they both like it... A lot. The leads have excellent chemistry although itā€™s low heat thereā€™s still some really cute mutual kisses.
Tumblr media
Takara & Amagi
Japan 2022
I gnawed on my knuckles and squealed a lot with this show, but a rewatch is way less tense. Reserved cool kid must learn to communicate to keep the tiny disaster nugget heā€™s madly in love with. It is beyond charming: soft and gentle, packed with cuteness and high school angst, thirst, & yearning.
Tumblr media
We Best Love
Taiwan 2021 WeTV
WBL successfully managed to pick up and combine the best features of Korean, Thai, and Japanese BL as it exists right now. Couple that to the insane chemistry from the leads, and we have one of the greatest BLs of all time, cooking to a recipe I doubt anyone else will ever be able to replicate since only Taiwan is this flexible. It's basically every classic BL trope bombarded at us in two parts, rapid fire, one after another. Rewatching this show reminds me of everything I love about this genre. It is the genre in pure concentrated form.
The End!
I think it's no accident that none of these are Thai, part of a rewatch for me is the brevity of the show, longer stuff does get rewatched, but not as frequently.

Of Bookstore, Coffees, and Late Nights
Sunshine!Reader/Southern!Reader/Plus Sized!Reader
Summary: After Spencer is shot he can't do much in the field for a while, being stuck to the offices in Quantico. His insomnia starts to amp up and instead of an urge for McDonald's at 1 AM he finds himself desperate for a new book and a coffee. Somehow, he finds the Midnight Owl, the late night bookstore/cafe open at weird hours with a cute southern co owner who probably gets the same amount of sleep as he does.
She also makes the best coffee that is disgustingly sweet. Exactly how he likes it.
Word Count: 11k
Warnings: Mentions of Season 5 100 episode and canon typical BAU themes
|Next
The one with the late night bookstoreĀ Ā Ā Ā
If Spencer could pace, he would, but his new semi-permanent crutch situation was impeding his mobility. He hasnā€™t been able to sleep, much less relax with the knowledge of Hotch being stabbed by George Foyet in his own home. Or how itā€™s clear that Foyet is playing an extreme game with the BAU, but mostly Hotch. Spencer didnā€™t even want to think about poor Haley and Jack being thrown into witness protection. These were scenarios Spencer knew came with the job he does, but seeing it happen to people he knows and cares about, makes his stomach churn. He couldnā€™t imagine if it was his own mother being threatened. It sends a cold chill down his back. He needs a distraction.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencerā€™s eyes drag over to his used and abused bookshelf. Looking through his collection trying to find something to read. Even for a distraction heā€™s not very interested in rereading any of the texts on his shelf. His go to comfort of Sherlock Holmes doesnā€™t even seem all that appealing at the moment. He needs something that isnā€™t about criminals or detectives right now. Too bad nothing else on his shelf seemed to catch his eye. Spencer eyes his clock and the analog clock on his wall tells him itā€™s two in the morning. Heā€™d be lucky if anything besides a dingy twenty-four-hour cafe was open, much less a bookstore.Ā Ā Ā Ā
He sighs and looks over at his discarded laptop on his desk. He boots it up to see if maybe he could at least check how early the library opened. He could try to sleep but his insomnia was eating away at him, trying to focus on anything else but work seemed harder and harder. Spencer had to get out of his apartment. He looks up the library hours as well as a few bookstores. Just trying to see how soon he could sit down and avoid the never-ending running ofĀ his brain. Heā€™s surprised when he finds a bookstore that was advertising its hours as open. Surely that was wrong. He spots the phone number on the webpage, and he decides to call to double check.Ā Ā Ā Ā
The line rings for roughly two seconds before itā€™s picked up, a melodic voice on the other line states, ā€œMidnight Owl, this is Y/N how can I help you?ā€ The cadence of the womanā€™s voice much too chipper for the middle of the night.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencerā€™s shocked into silence for a moment before he responds, ā€œI thought the hours posted were wrong...ā€ He finds himself stating.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œNope!ā€ She replies, unbothered by his blunt response. ā€œWeā€™re open 24/5, only closed on Fridays and Saturdays!ā€ She tells him brightly, ā€œYou wouldnā€™t be the first to call thinking we posted our hours wrong though. More common than you think.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
He coughs awkwardly and finds himself nodding even though she canā€™t see it. ā€œOkay, great, thank you so much.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œNot a problem, swing by some time we have the best drinks crafted by yours truly!ā€ She jokes with a soft laugh trailing her sentence. She drawls out the end of her words in a way that has them twisting together as sweet as the tea heā€™s almost positive she drinks.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œHave a good night.ā€ He states before hanging up the phone.Ā Ā Ā Ā
He looks at the address listed and finds that itā€™s just up the street, barely a block away.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer eyes his crutches for a moment debating on whether he should go or not. His good leg shakes in anxious movements as he sits on his couch. What were the odds that there was a bookstore up his block that was open at odd hours that catered to him? He knew the odds; they were incrediblyĀ lowĀ . He shrugs to himself and hobbles to grab his crutches, heā€™ll check it out. Why the hell not? If itā€™s too good to be true he can add it to the list of places heā€™ll never visit again like that one coffee shop downtown that burns everything heā€™s ever ordered.Ā Ā Ā Ā
He desperately needs to get out of his apartment.Ā Ā Ā Ā
-Ā Ā Ā
Y/Nā€™s night at the Midnight Owl was going slowly. You had a few regulars wander in, which you were happy about since the store had only officially been open for four months. There was a couple that sat on the loveseat in the cafe every Thursday night reading their books together and drinking the cafeā€™s famous homemade lavender lemonade. Not that youĀ could brag about it, your co-owner makes pastries and premade drinks. All homemade family recipes. On the opposite side of the store was the guy who came in every other day to check for anything new. He grabs a coffee and roams the stacks for an hour. Sometimes he buys, sometimes he doesnā€™t. He comes in at the same time though, so youā€™re pretty sure he works a graveyard shift.Ā Ā Ā Ā
There were a couple of students at a table in the cafe section clearly up studying and writing papers. The semester for school had only just started a month ago, but the influx of students coming and going was increasing by the day.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You loved your little bookstore, and during the day it was popping. A rising trendy place for local university students. You preferred the quiet of the nights though. It gave you time to make orders for books, restock, and change out displays. It was methodical cleaning and sorting that kept you sane. Your daytime life was overly complicated and having your own corner of the world was nice. It felt like a safe bubble that didnā€™t necessarily feel like work.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Youā€™re in the middle of compiling a list of books to reorder that have already sold out when the front doorbell chimes telling her someone just entered. You are behind a stack finishing what you're writing on your notepad when you calls out, ā€œBe right there!ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
You bound around the stack to the counter to meet the newcomer, ā€œWelcome in! How can I help you?ā€ you asked happily pushing your hair behind your ear nervously.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You scan the guy from head to toe, heā€™s definitely new. He looks like a grad student, probably around your age. His mousy brown hair is tied back into a low ponytail and heā€™s in a well-worn Caltech shirt and sweatpants. The oddest thing about him is the crutches heā€™s sporting as he comes in. You send him a warm smile.Ā Ā Ā
Spencer looks at the woman standing at the counter and finds youā€™re not what he expected you to be. You look like the moon; you have features that are soft and delicate, and your eyes shine with the bright ambience of the bookstore.Ā Spencer almost loses his train of thought as he takes in the bookstore workerā€™s features that just made you seem so inviting.Ā Ā Ā Ā
It takes a second before he registers that you asked him a question. ā€œOh, yes,ā€ he rushes out awkwardly. ā€œIs the cafe still open?ā€ He questions, tilting his head to the empty-looking bar on the other side.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You nod happily, ā€œIt is! Iā€™m the only one who works the night shift, so I run the register and the cafe. Would you like something?ā€ you ask him, already walking toward the counter that holds the cabinet of pastries and coffee machines.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œA latte would be great actually.ā€ He says in a much clearer voice.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œCan do.ā€ You grin at him radiantly and itā€™s so infectious he finds himself returning one. You turn and almost have a skip to yourĀ step as you walk, far too awake for him to deem reasonable for two in the morning.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer watches her as he slowly moves forward on his crutches, she almost dances around the machines as she makes his latte. Sheā€™s humming to the music that heā€™s finally registered playing in the bookstore. Sheā€™s radiating a warmth that Spencer doesnā€™t get to see much day to day except for the one and only, Penelope Garcia. Garcia looked and acted like the sun, one giant ball of pink and blonde energy. He watches the worker move around her workstation making his latte and itā€™s seamless how she moves, itā€™s her second nature.Ā  Sheā€™s just at ease here, which settles his uneasy nerves about trying a new place out in the middle of the night. He looks around and sees a few people mingling about.Ā Ā Ā
Spencer takes time to look around the store and notices how it feels much more lived in than any box stores heā€™s been to. The overhead lights arenā€™t fluorescent like a normal store but a few well-placed wooden chandeliers that are carved to look like vines. Every other light is a floor light or table lamp that has mismatched covers and stained glass. He turns to the large windows, and he guesses the store probably gets great sunshine when itā€™s daylight. The multiple house plants by the window and on the empty tables being a good indicator. The ambiance is so inviting, not to mention the amount of comfortable faux leather seating he sees.Ā Ā Ā Ā
He could imagine spending a lot of time here, it was just so cozy. Spencer canā€™t imagine he would have missed this place opening but with all the cases theyā€™ve been busy with, he actually isnā€™t surprised at all.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Heā€™s brought out of his thoughts by her placing the drink on the pickup bar, ā€œSo what ails you?ā€ Your voice carries to him, and you tilt your head waiting patiently.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œExcuse me?ā€ He finds himself stuttering out.Ā Ā Ā
You shrug nonchalantly, ā€œWell, itā€™s the middle of the night and Iā€™ve never seen your face in here before.ā€ You state the fact like it's so obvious.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œSo, whatā€™s bugginā€™ you?ā€ Your voice drawls out sweetly as you look at him expectantly.Ā Ā Ā
Itā€™s almost like the lights in the cafe frame her from behind, bright and dazzling. Sheā€™s clearly personable and Spencer isnā€™t used to people with Y/Nā€™s personality being overtly kind to him. Heā€™ll see how long it takes her to dismiss him like most people do. It doesnā€™t annoy him like it used to, he expects it really. Especially when his own team and friends do it almost regularly.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You are waiting patiently for his response with unwavering kind eyes.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œInsomnia,ā€ He settled on admitting to you, he gave you a tight lined frown. ā€œI needed a new book; Iā€™ve read through my catalog.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
Your eyes light up, ā€œThatā€™s my specialty! I mean, I make a mean latte, but my favorite part of this place is the books.ā€ you whispered conspiratorially.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œSo,ā€ you come around from the back of the bar and put your hands on your hips, ā€œWhat genre were you looking for? Or was it a specific book?ā€ you ask him.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œFantasy, preferably. Iā€™ve read all of Tolkien and Gaimanā€™s works.ā€ He tells you.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You nod in understanding your eyes giving a quick look of him from head to toe, ā€œYou look like a man whoā€™s readĀ The HobbitĀ andĀ American GodsĀ .ā€ You said, almost more so to herself.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer gives you a quizzical look, unsure if he should be insulted or not. You read his face and your own cheeks flush with embarrassment. YourĀ hands start moving exaggeratedly as yourĀ voice pitches, ā€œNot in a bad way! I promise, Iā€™m here for a well-read person! Not that you have to have read those two authors to be well read, I just-ā€ YouĀ take a deep breath and stop yourself.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œSorry, I just mean, you look like youā€™ve probably read some of the most popular titles in that genre.ā€ Your voice grows smaller, and your face is bright in a flush as you rush through yourĀ words, drawling them outĀ in that voice that sounds like sugar. You bite the inside of your cheek forcing yourself to stop talking.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer chuckles and shakes his head, ā€œI get it, youā€™re good.ā€ He tells youĀ reassuringly.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You sigh in relief, pushing yourĀ hair out of your face nervously, ā€œSorry, I really didnā€™t mean anything by it. I just meant you probably want something different and not recommended every time you ask for fantasy.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer just gives you a smile, ā€œI appreciate it.ā€ He shifts his weight on his crutches to awkwardly sip his latte.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You usher him over to one of the comfortable chairs with a nice side table lamp that has beautiful green and red stained-glass roses on it.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œHere sit, Iā€™ll grab some recommendations, and you can let me know what you think.ā€ You donā€™t even give him a chance to rebuttal before youā€™re off and disappear into the stacks.Ā Ā Ā Ā
The silence that followed her absence was overwhelmingly loud, except for the soft music playing from the speakers. Spencer takes his time drinking his latte and itā€™s delicious. Better than the place the BAU grabs coffee from, and much better than whatever was in their coffee pot at the office.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You pop back out from the stacks within ten minutes holding at least five book options for him to sort through.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œThese all have different sub-genres but are fantasy in nature. Let me know if any look good to you.ā€ You hand them over to him happily. He notices you biting the inside of your cheek again, as you watch him look over the books.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Youā€™re rocking on your feet, as you watch Spencer thumb through the books, reading the summaries keeping his face neutral. You start picking at your nails trying not to seem like a dog waiting for its owner. You should busy yourself with something else besides trying to gauge Spencerā€™s reaction to the books, but you canā€™t help it.Ā Ā Ā
Spencer pauses on a book with a bright colorful cover that was in the middle of the stack. Itā€™s the only one he pauses on and your face lights up.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œI lovedĀ Howlā€™s Moving CastleĀ !ā€ Your voice pitches up in enthusiasm. You start talking with your hands again, ā€œItā€™s fun, and the cast of characters who, in a magical world, feel so relatable. The two leads also have great dialogue! I was genuinely laughing out loud.ā€ Your face splitsĀ into a grin as you explain the book to Spencer without spoiling anything.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You are so filled with joy as you talk about the book, it doesnā€™t take him but a second of listening to you to know heā€™s sold. Heā€™s reading this, your genuine joy selling him on it. He doesnā€™t have to look through the rest of the stack, though heā€™s sure youā€™ve likely read all the books you offered him.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œIā€™ll take it.ā€ He said, moving to stand up to purchase it at the counter.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You move to stop him, ā€œDonā€™t worry about it! You can pay on your way out. You look like youā€™ve been struggling with those crutches.ā€ You tell him waving him back down to sit.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œJust relax, drink and read. Itā€™s what the Midnight Owlā€™s for.ā€ You chirp happily shooting him a triumphant look as you move to walk back to the counter.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You go back to working on creating an order for books back at the checkout counter. You have the work desktop open back to the list of books you wereĀ cross referencing for prices. You go back and forth from looking at your handwritten list to researching prices from different distributors.Ā Ā Ā Ā
The couple who was there earlier finally get up, waving goodbye to Y/N.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œHave a great night yā€™all! See you next week.ā€ You tell them with your own wave thatā€™s brief as you make the order.Ā Ā Ā Ā
The only noise in the store is some shuffling and the music playing overhead and you humming along to it. Itā€™s a mix CD you burned a few years back and most of the songs are still your favorite. You keep meaning to make a new one, but you just havenā€™t had time. Your eyes wander from your computer to check on your new customer reading in the corner. You donā€™t want to hover, but you try to gauge if heā€™ll be a regular or not. You hope so, he seemed nice enough.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer can feel her eyes on him occasionally, he can see her fidgeting behind the counter. Every other song he can spot her leaning out of the corner of his eye to look over to him. He tries to hide his grin; he knows that look well. Sheā€™s trying to see if heā€™s enjoying the book. Spencer tries to read at a normal pace, even though he can read twenty thousand words per minute, that defeats the purpose of him trying to get out of his apartment to just devour this book. Plus, he kind of enjoys watching the store clerk.Ā Ā Ā
Sheā€™s full of energy and he has no idea where it comes from, but itā€™s almost a nervous energy. Sheā€™s constantly moving, either fidgeting or walking through the stacks to check or tidy the books. Sheā€™s also passed in front of him a few times to check the cafe machines or even grab a pastry heā€™s sure has been there for too long, and she feels bad about selling it.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer stays there for a few hours; he really doesnā€™t notice how long until the door opens and the bell chimes again.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œMorning!ā€ The new woman cheers sleepily.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You wave at her, ā€œMorning Josie. There are still a few pastries left from yesterday, but I put them in the back fridge for you.ā€Ā Ā Ā
The new woman, Josie, waved back, ā€œThanks, Iā€™m going to prep for today.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer finally looks at the time and realizes itā€™s five in the morning, he sighs standing up. He grabs his crutches and pushes himself toward the counter to pay for his book. If heā€™s lucky he could get an hour or two of a nap before work.Ā Ā Ā Ā
He gently slides the book over to you and your whole face brightens, ā€œHave you liked it so far?ā€ you asked him.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer grins ā€œItā€™s charming. You were right about the cast; itā€™s a great blend of characters that shouldnā€™t fit as well as they do together.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
You nod excitedly. ā€œI donā€™t know if youā€™ve gotten to a certain part, but I wonā€™t spoil it, IĀ lovedĀ how they explain the magic that affects Sophie! It was a fun book.ā€Ā Ā Ā
Spencer hands over some cash to pay for his book. ā€œIā€™ve liked it so far. Iā€™ll have to ask for another recommendation.ā€ He tells you.Ā Ā Ā Ā
If you were a dog, your ears would be pointed up and tail wagging, you cannot contain your pure joy.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œAbsolutely! Anytime, itā€™s one of my favorite things.ā€ You push your hair back and youĀ look down at the table nervously pushing his book back toward him with his change.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œIā€™m always happy to see a returning face.ā€ You said looking up at him, your eyes sparkling. ā€œIā€™m Y/N by the way, I donā€™t know if I introduced myself.ā€Ā Ā Ā
Spencer takes the book and his change; you smile brilliantly at him, and he feels a little enchanted by the bookstore clerk. He returns it. ā€œSpencer. It was nice to meet you.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
He gives you a small wave before walking out, crutches pushing him forward.Ā Ā Ā Ā
The one about HalloweenĀ Ā Ā Ā
You have decided that you do not care if itā€™s only September, you areĀ decorating for Halloween. Maybe itā€™s that youā€™re festive or maybe itā€™s from growing up in a southern community that went all out for decorations, but you areĀ determined that the Midnight Owl will be the place to be for October. Youā€™ve also planned a few events for the spooky month for all ages.Ā Ā Ā Ā
There are a few reading hours planned for children during the day, costume contests, and some trick or treat candy lined up to buy. Your shopping list was filling up quickly. For the nighttime events youā€™ve gotten together with Josie to throw a movie night every Sunday night at eight in October. Youā€™ve already planned a lineup of movies to play and popcorn to order. You still canā€™t decide on having two movies or not, a family friendly one first and then a scary one. Sheā€™ll figure it out.Ā Ā Ā Ā
To say that you are bubbling with excitement is an understatement.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You're in the middle of dragging out one of the boxes of decorations from the attic when theĀ door chimes open.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œWelcome in! Help yourself to shop or if you wait a few minutes, I can fix you a drink at the cafe!ā€ You shout from behind the large box youā€™re carrying. Itā€™s not heavy, filled mostly with paper and plastic decorations. The box itself is just quite large, and it blocks your view when you walk.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œWhat are you doing?ā€ A soft chuckle passes through, and you recognize it immediately. Itā€™s your new favorite regular.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You set the box down in a huff behind the counter and look at Spencer exasperatedly.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œIf youĀ mustĀ know, Iā€™m preparing for Halloween.ā€ You said matter-of-factly.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencerā€™s hazel eyes light up, the same way he gets when heā€™s about to tell you a long list of facts about something. You love it when he gets excited. Itā€™s contagious.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œOh, please continue then. Itā€™s never too early for Halloween.ā€ He said happily.Ā Ā Ā
You let out a burst of laughter and it echoes in the room, ā€œThank you! Finally, someone who understands.ā€ You tease him.Ā Ā Ā
Spencerā€™s been coming in almost every night since his first visit. Itā€™s only been a month, but you love talking to Spencer. Heā€™s full of endless information and he loves to read just as much, if not more, than you do.Ā Ā Ā Ā
He has an unfair advantage though. He had admitted how quickly he could read to you in passing a few weeks ago and your jaw dropped. You didnā€™t believe him at first.Ā Ā Ā Ā
-Ā Ā Ā
Ā ā€œOkay, thatā€™s the fifth book youā€™ve finished in like two days Spencer. Are you even actually reading them?ā€ You had teased him, when he returned to the shelves looking through the selections.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œOf course I do. I just happen to read twenty thousand words per minute.ā€ He said easily running his fingers along the spines of the books as he pursues.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You scoff, ā€œYea right.ā€ you rolled your eyes. ā€œJust say you skim through them.ā€Ā Ā Ā
Spencer shakes his head, ā€œIā€™m serious, I have an eidetic memory too.ā€ he said.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You blinked at him a few times in disbelief before just bursting into a fit of small giggles.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œWow, I wish I could read that fast. Iā€™d get through my TBR so much faster!ā€ you said impressed.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer pauses looking at you, trying to assess if you're trying to make fun of him or not. Your face is split into a wide grin, and he realizes you are intrigued by this little tidbit. You didn't think it was weird, thatĀ heā€™sĀ weird.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer felt his face flush a bit, and he just shrugged it off. ā€œItā€™s not a big deal.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œNo, itā€™s just a really cool fact about you.ā€ You said, like it was obvious.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer mouth tighten into a fine line, and he shook his head, ā€œThat would be a first.ā€ he had mumbled under his breath.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You didnā€™t press him, but you did file away in the back of your mind his response for later. Clearly Spencer wasnā€™t used to someone reacting positively to this tidbit about him.Ā Ā Ā Ā
-Ā Ā Ā
You look at Spencer as he stands there watching you. Heā€™s in his work clothes, which you're used to by now, but itā€™s the opposite of what he wore when they first met. Heā€™s in a purple button up shirt that heā€™s rolled his sleeves up to his elbows. His cardigan is hanging off his faded brown leather satchel sitting against his hip. Heā€™s leaning on his crutches as she assesses him.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œCā€™mon,ā€ you said waving for him to follow. ā€œLetā€™s make something fall flavored to get rolling with the season.ā€ You suggest a small smile tugging at your lips.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer just nods and follows you toward the cafe section.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œAre you a fan of pumpkin flavors or do you prefer other autumn flavors?ā€ You ask him as you walk around the counter to the coffee machines.Ā Ā Ā
The pickup counter for the cafe doubles as a normal place to sit and Spencer grabs a stool to sit in, leaning his crutches against the counter.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œI only like my drinks sweet. Flavor isnā€™t too important.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
You hum in acknowledgement and get to work on making him a drink. ā€œIā€™ll just surprise you then.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer brings out a few books heā€™s reading and places them on the table. While you make his drink you ask, ā€œWhatā€™s your favorite book to read to get into the spooky spirit?ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
He perks up, ā€œThereā€™s plenty of options, I think I prefer something classic likeĀ The ShinningĀ or maybe even an old compilation of ghost stories. Those are always good.ā€ he said passionately.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œOoh! Iā€™m obsessed with the paranormal!ā€ you gasp in excitement.Ā Ā Ā
Spencer feeds into the enthusiastic response, ā€œDid you know there are a multitude of categories of the paranormal? Most people only associate it with ghosts or demons, but ufology and cryptozoology are also subcategories. Personally, as interesting as ghost or demon possession stories are, Iā€™m far more fascinated by cryptozoology and the creatures that different areas of the world claim to see and state they have proof of.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer realizes heā€™s rambling and tries to cut himself off, but your eyes are wide as you actively lean against the counter giving him your rapt attention.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You notice his abrupt stop and you tilt your head, ā€œKeep going, you have my full attention! Iā€™m trying to get into the spooky spirit!ā€ You drawl out, your rich accent seeping through.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You turn to grab his drink and hand it to him. It's in a nice burnt orange colored mug, ā€œItā€™s a maple chai latte. Felt like fall to me.ā€ you said quietly, having a matching mug with him. You lean against the counter and bat your hand at his forearm.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œCā€™mon tell me more!ā€ you giggled.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer stared at you in awe for a moment, before he tried to hide his expression through drinking his latte.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œGhost hunting became popular in the early 2000s, but itā€™s been around since the 1920ā€™s and even before then there were popular ghost stories told throughout history! Humans have always been interested in the afterlife which is why weā€™re probably so fascinated by looking for proof of the afterlife.ā€Ā Ā Ā
You nod and sips from your own mug, ā€œHave you ever watched those ghost hunting shows before?ā€ you asked curiously.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer shook his head no. ā€œI donā€™t watch a lot of television.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
You hum in thought, ā€œYeah, that checks out. Well, theyā€™re super cheesy and trashy. Love them to be honest.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œWhich oneā€™s your favorite?ā€ he asked, leaning closer against the bar.Ā Ā Ā
It felt like it was only the two of them in the bookstore. Inside their own bubble, the world moved slowly inside the confines of the Midnight Owl.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œThis is gonna sound so awful!ā€ you laughed lightly shaking your head, ā€œThereā€™s a show called Ghost Adventures, and the main guy, Zak Bagans, heā€™s such a dick to the ghosts! He instigates all the time, and I mean, regardless of if ghosts are real, he goes inĀ hotĀ ! Not to mention he always throws his costar Aaron into the worst places! Itā€™s just insane, absolute trash.ā€ you shake your head in disbelief.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œBut you love it?ā€ Spencer asked.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You gave him a deadpan stare, ā€œOh absolutely, itā€™s the best kind of quality trash.ā€Ā Ā Ā
You burst into a fit of giggles and Spencer couldnā€™t help but find it contagious.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œAaaaaaanyway~ā€ You drag out, moving to grab your box of decorations.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œWanna help me decide how to decorate?ā€ you ask him, grabbing a pumpkin garland out of the bin and tossing it dramatically over your shoulders like a scarf.Ā Ā Ā
Spencer brushes his loose hair out of his face and nods. He may still be useless on crutches, but he could help... Kind of.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You empty the containers of the bin on the counter where Spencerā€™s sitting and he quickly grabs his mug to lift it up to avoid being knocked over from the avalanche of orange and black. You smile at him apologetically before trying to dig out your favorite decorations.Ā Ā Ā Ā
-Ā Ā Ā
Spencerā€™s face is twisted in a look of frustration as he sits in the corner reading. He came in a while ago and besides his drink, he hasnā€™t spoken much to you.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Which isnā€™t a bad thing, tonight was one of the busier nights. It was mid-October, and the festivities had been nonstop. Tonight was vampire night, which upon entering the building Spencer was already grimacing. There was a special drink deal on the board hanging above the cafe for anyone buying a vampire related book.Ā TwilightĀ ,Ā DraculaĀ ,Ā CarmillaĀ ,Ā Interview with a Vampire,Ā just pick a title it was an option with its own fun themed cafe drink that was absolutely red.Ā Ā Ā
Ā It wasnā€™t like you knew he had just finished working on a case that involved vampirism, but the odds werenā€™t in his favor for finding an escape from the most recent case. Halloween season had its ups and downs he supposed.Ā Ā Ā
There was no way of explaining his slightly irritable mood. Spencer hadnā€™t mentioned his work to you. You never asked, and he didnā€™t feel like explaining that he spent most of his waking hours profiling serial killers. In the past it hasnā€™t made the best openers in conversation. Itā€™s also nice to have this small corner of his life not be coated with unsubs, victims, and death. Itā€™s just his favorite bookstore.Ā Ā Ā
Spencer looked up to see you making more drinks, the cafe was popular tonight. Your chatting up another woman whoā€™s laughing at the joke you told her. The other woman is holding a book that Spencer is positive is a vampire novel.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œAnd I have one raspberry mocha for aĀ CarmillaĀ lover!ā€ your voice rang out and you handed over the drink to the customer.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œCome back Sunday for our movie night, weā€™re playingĀ BeetlejuiceĀ !ā€ you said and waved goodbye to the customer.Ā Ā Ā Ā
For eleven o'clock at night the shop was busy. Busting out drink after drink and ringing up books at the cafe register. It was your idea to do a deal with a themed book and drink combo, but you didnā€™t expect to still be busy into the night. You hadnā€™t even had a break in customers to say hello to your regulars.Ā Ā Ā Ā
For business, this was great, for your own mental health, you were struggling. You just needed it to slow down enough to catch your breath. You should have scheduled someone else on shift with you, but you werenā€™t about to call for help now. It was your mistake, and you'll live with it. You made a note to make sure someone is on shift with you tomorrow night for a different themed deal.Ā Ā Ā Ā
After another round of five more customers there is finally a break. You sighed leaning against the counter and took a grounding breath. You donā€™t move for a minute, just catch your breath before you look up and catch Spencer from his chair looking at you. You shot him a shaky smile that is supposed to be reassuring but actually looks like youā€™re about to cry. Spencerā€™s eyebrows shoot up in surprise and he decides to get up and come over. The cafe was still bustling but no one was sitting at the counter. Spencer shoves his book into his bag, grabs his crutches and hobbles to the counter.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œBusy night?ā€ he asked, already knowing the answer but trying to see how you wereĀ doing.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Your eyes look up into his hazel ones and you look worn. ā€œIn my head, the whole vampire boom and Halloween themed event seemed like a good idea. For profit, absolutely. For my sanity? I never wanna see anotherĀ TwilightĀ shirt or raspberry flavored item for a while.ā€ you said in a groan placing your head against the counter.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œWhat isĀ TwilightĀ ?ā€ Spencer asked.Ā Ā Ā Ā
He doesnā€™t know anything except that it has something to do with vampires and its popular enough that the victims of the latest case were also obsessed with it. He knows itā€™s a book, but besides that, he has no clue.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You slowly move to look up and blink at him for a moment, trying to deduce if heā€™s being serious or not. ā€œVery funny Spencer, I know youā€™re not asking what the pop culture phenomenonĀ TwilightĀ franchise is.ā€ you replied with a laugh.Ā Ā Ā
After a moment of looking at Spencerā€™s confused face you realize he was in fact, unaware. Your eyes widen.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œWait, wait, wait, you seriously donā€™t know? I mean itā€™s like everywhere. The second movie is coming out in less than a month. I donā€™t think Iā€™ve sold so many copies of a book in my life. I canā€™t keepĀ New MoonĀ on the shelves.ā€ you said almost exasperatedly, but the smile on your face gave it away. If Spencer didnā€™t know any better, heā€™d think you were getting a kick out of it. He knows by now you wonā€™t make fun of him; you're elated for a completely different reason.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œI just know itā€™s popular and about vampires.ā€ He replied with a shrug.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œOh my god, I get to explainĀ TwilightĀ to you.ā€ your face splits into a massive grin, your energy returning quickly.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer quirks an eyebrow, ā€œI thought you were over hearingĀ TwilightĀ ?ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œNo, no, no, no! This is totally different!ā€ you're almost vibrating with excitement. ā€œIā€™ve read all the books, Iā€™m gonna let you borrow my copy next time youā€™re in! Actually, Iā€™ll give you the first two since you read so fast!ā€ her words are running together in a run on sentence sheā€™s talking too fast. Your accent came through stronger than ever with your eagerness.Ā Ā Ā Ā
He doesnā€™t have it in him to turn you down, you're just so thrilled. Spencer just finds himself too caught up in your joy to tell you he had no interest in the book series. He finds himself agreeing to borrow your copies.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œI can buy them if you need me too. I donā€™t want to take your copies unless, youā€™re sure.ā€ He offers.Ā Ā Ā
You shake yourĀ head, ā€œI canā€™t keep them on the shelves long enough for you to buy them. Just go ahead and take my copies.ā€ You move to make Spencer a drink that isnā€™t one of the red blood themed drinks on the menu. ā€œItā€™s not a big deal. I do have a lot of sticky notes in there though, my friends and I read it for a book club night.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
He sits up a little straighter, suddenly becoming more interested in reading these books. Not because of their pop culture relevance but because he could read your commentary. There was something special about that, sharing a book with annotations.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œIā€™ll bring one too.ā€ He finds himself offering before he can think.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Your face glows as you hand him a chai latte. ā€œIā€™d love that! Itā€™ll take me a bit longer to read than you will.ā€ you joked lightly.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œItā€™ll be worth it; I havenā€™t had someone to talk to about books since my mom.ā€ He said looking down at his drink, his eyes growing distant for a split second.Ā Ā Ā
You open your mouth to ask but quickly shut it, biting the inside of your cheek to stop. You might be nosy, but you knew when to not pry. It was how Spencer seemed to be somewhere else in his mind, if only for a moment. It was enough to know that you had no business asking him to open a can of worms he maybe didnā€™t want to. Instead, you turn around to grab a set of fake vampire teeth to put in your mouth. They were small and awkward and not cute by any means, but if you could get him to smile, that was all you needed.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You patiently wait for Spencer to look back up at as you rest your head in your palm and keep your face neutral. The fake teeth are making yourĀ mouth uncomfortable, but youā€™llĀ survive.Ā Ā Ā Ā
When Spencer does look up and sees you dramatically batting your eyes at him and grinning madly with childrenā€™s plastic vampire teeth, he canā€™t control the bubbling laughter that takes over him. His shoulders shake with the full body movement, and he shakes his head in disbelief.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œWhere did you get those?ā€ he asked through his fit.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You turn to spit them out into the trash, your mouth disgustingly filled with drool from the uncomfortable teeth. You cover your mouth and grab your own drink to flush out your mouth.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œThey were a gimmick for the themed drinks tonight.ā€ you finally replied. ā€œGood for a quick joke not for actually wearing.ā€ you said groaning.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œPretty sure they are made for childrenā€™s mouths.ā€ Spencer teased.Ā Ā Ā
You shrug and sigh, ā€œWell, being a vampire for Halloween is off the list of options this year. I donā€™t want to wear those for a whole night.ā€Ā Ā Ā
ā€œProbably better off.ā€ He said trying to not immediately focus on Dante and his manager coercing a mentally ill young woman into committing vampire ritual like murders.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œYeah, the whole thing with that celebrity kinda left a sour taste in my mouth.ā€ you mentioned grimacing.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œDante?ā€ Spencer asked for clarification.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œYeah, it was all over the tabloids,ā€ you pointed to the magazine stand by the main register. ā€œGot them in this morning.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer tries to not make a face as he sees them, ā€œYou read that?ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
You let out a loud snort of a laugh. ā€œNo, no, no, oh god!ā€ you stand up a little straighter and push your hair back. ā€œI donā€™t trust a TMZ article as far as I can throw it, but those murders are real. Making it look like vampire bites...ā€ you shudder, ā€œthat just skeeves me out.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer drinks from his mug but nods his head in agreement. He didnā€™t peg you to believe paparazzi reports. The magazine articles would be wrong anyway; they didnā€™t make the arrest until that afternoon. It was refreshing to see someone not believe everything they read.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œIf vampires are off your list, what other costumes are you thinking about?ā€ he asked, trying to change the subject.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œNo idea.ā€ you groan out in irritation. ā€œI usually do group costumes with my friends but, kind of hard when they live 600 miles away.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œSouth?ā€ he asked.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You snorted with a roll of your eyes, ā€œAw geez what gave it away?ā€ you tease with an exaggerated drawl, making your accent thicker than normal.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer shakes his head in amusement. ā€œVery funny. Why move here?ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
You tense up, avoiding his doe eyes. You look down biting your lip nervously. ā€œItā€™s uh, a long story.ā€ you said quietly.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Your body almost looks like itā€™s trying to shrink in on itself. Spencer doesnā€™t need to be a profiler to understand your body language. Whatever it is, youā€™re not ready to share it.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Instead, he tries to be reassuring that heā€™s not prying for information.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œIā€™m a transplant too. I grew up in Las Vegas.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
Your eyebrows shot up in surprise, ā€œIā€™ve never been, is it really just the strip filled with casinos or are there nice pockets of peace and no tourists?ā€ you asked.Ā Ā Ā
You sigh, ā€œIt is a lot of tourists. Thereā€™s plenty of local places, ones that are only there if youā€™ve grown up knowing how to get to them.ā€ he told you in a quiet voice, almost conspiratorially.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Your mouth splits into a smile that reaches your eyes, ā€œSo youā€™ll be my tour guide, right?ā€Ā Ā Ā
Spencerā€™s face heats up from the suggestion and your giggles fill the room.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œIā€™m just teasing you,ā€ you pat his arm reassuringly before going to grab a pastry from the front display.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œCome on and split this last cookie with me, I know I'm not going to sell it.ā€ you said grabbing a chocolate chip cookie and warming it up before cutting it in half.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencerā€™s face is still tinted pink but the soft cookie and the way it melts when he bites into it and seeing you look happier than earlier, is enough for him. A small corner of peace in the world inside the Midnight Owl.Ā Ā Ā
The one after Haleyā€™s funeralĀ Ā Ā Ā
Youā€™re sitting at the checkout counter reading the book Spencer most recently traded with you. Itā€™s one of the Sherlock Homles books, which you had admittedly never read before. You've watched plenty of films and shows but reading it never really crossed your mind.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You joked about making Spencer watchĀ The Great Mouse DetectiveĀ when you finished so you could explain your first introduction to Sherlock Holmes. He had no idea what you were talking about, which you found charming in its own way. You loved introducing Spencer to the pop culture media that just filled your brain. Even if it was trashy. You had promised himĀ The Great Mouse DetectiveĀ was anythingĀ butĀ trash. A childhood classic for sure.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You take yourĀ time reading the books Spencer lent. He started leaving small post-it notes for you in them with commentary and questions. It was like you two had your own language, and it was books. Even if he let you borrow a genre you had no interest in, you suddenly were invested. It was a way to get to know him, and in turn he took your books happily. Your annotations were way more scattered brained and filled with tiny commentary to yourself.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You saw Spencer reading one of theĀ books youĀ let him borrow and he laughed, loudly, in the middle of the store. You both flushed in embarrassment. It was a busy night, filled with university students studying late at night, so it was mostly silent besides the music that was playing through the speakers. You knew you had written something insulting about one of the characters in that sticky note. You wereĀ creative with your insults, and you had completely forgotten to take that out before giving it to him. Spencer teased you about your comments on Gale fromĀ The Hunger GamesĀ for the rest of that night.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Youā€™re in the middle ofĀ The Hounds of BaskervilleĀ when the door opens. You look up to greet them but your face falls when you see Spencer, he looks terrible. You slowly close the book and move to walk toward him.Ā Ā Ā
His eyes were hollow and the normal dark circles under his eyes seemed impossibly darker than usual. Spencer just seemed sad and defeated. You hadnā€™t seen this side of him and all you wanted to do was press your thumb to his forehead and smooth out the furrow of his brow. To get him to relax, if only for a moment.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œHey honey, whatā€™s wrong?ā€ you asked gently walking toward him. You reach out to rub his arms affectionately, ā€œWhat happened?ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
Your voice is soft and sweet, the way you said honey with your southern drawl feels like a hug. Spencer just needed a minute. One second of peace. The image of Haleyā€™s body unmoving with blood still fresh behind his eyes.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œItā€™s been aĀ longĀ week.ā€ His voice comes out a little rough. Heā€™s haggard from the flight from Nashville and he really didnā€™t want to go home.Ā Ā Ā Ā
The only comforting place he could think of immediately was the Midnight Owl, of you. Your warm voice and comforting drinks were the only things he could stand to be around.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Your face softens at his words, and you tilt your head, ā€œDo you need a hug?ā€ you asked softly.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Thereā€™s a shaky sigh that escapes Spencerā€™s mouth and he just nods his head, unable to form the words.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You pull him into your embrace gently, your arms wrapped around his shoulders tightly. You rub soothing circles into his back and Spencer holds onto your waist. Your body radiates heat and it's comforting as he shoves his face into your shoulder. You smell like vanilla, cloves, and parchment paper and his whole body relaxes into you. You hold onto him until Spencer pulls away, not wanting him to feel like he was a burden. The store was empty anyway, it's been a slow night.Ā Ā Ā
He takes a deep breath before peeling himself off. He moves his hands to hold your arms so heā€™s supporting himself. Your eyes soften as you look him over, her hand coming up to cup his face.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œYou donā€™t have to talk about if you donā€™t want to, but Iā€™ve been told Iā€™m a great listener.ā€ You whisper softly.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer relaxes against your touch and doesnā€™t say much, just hums in response. He eventually finds his words, ā€œMy friends wife died recently, and it just, it was a shock.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
He doesnā€™t want to get into how Haley died. That his job makes him and his coworkers targets. The people they love. George Foyet died at Hotchā€™s hands for killing Haley and attempting to kill Jack. Spencer watched Hotchā€™s face crumble, fall and lose what he loved the most. He knew Hotch didnā€™t want to divorce Haley, he loved her and his son with his whole heart.Ā Ā Ā Ā
That love had cost him Haleyā€™s life.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œOh hun,ā€ your voice brings him back, ā€œIā€™m so sorry.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
He shakes his head, ā€œIā€™ll be fine. Iā€™m just processing it.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œYou donā€™t have to justify yourself to me, youā€™re allowed to process and grieve, especially if you knew her.ā€ you tell him firmly. ā€œCā€™mon, go sit down and Iā€™m gonna make a delicious warm drink and we can just relax alright?ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer gives a tiny, tight smile and lets you grab his hand to pull him to one of the nicer chairs. He sets his cane against the arm rest and is floored by how easy everything is with you.Ā Ā
You donā€™t push or pry for information, let him ramble, and Spencer doesnā€™t think heā€™s had a real friend outside of the BAU in a long time, much less someone his age. As much as he loves his team, there are times where they donā€™t understand him. Itā€™s a lot easier to be himself with you. Maybe itā€™s because you donā€™t know what heā€™s doing most of his days, and he could argue with himself that you donā€™t know him. Almost 90% of his life is the BAU, and who is he if he isnā€™t Dr. Spencer Reid, FBI agent in the Behavioral Analyst Unit? A small part of him hopes he could be the person he becomes when he enters the Midnight Owl. Ā Ā Ā
Heā€™s too lost in his thoughts to notice you walking over with two steaming mugs.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œHere, itā€™s just tea but I think you need a relaxing drink. No caffeine.ā€ you said with a sweet tone looking him over.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You sit on the arm rest of the chair cradling your own mug. ā€œCan I try something?ā€ you ask him.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer drinks from his mug, but he mutters an agreement under his breath.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œLean back fully in the chair.ā€ you instructed.Ā Ā Ā
He does as heā€™s told, he lowers his hands to his lap, mug still warmly pressed into his hands. Spencer isnā€™t sure what youā€™re trying to do until your hands are running through his hair, feather light. Youā€™re not massaging his scalp, just the lightest of touches as you card your fingers through his long hair. Spencerā€™s eyes close and he almost moans from how the tension leaves his body immediately.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You let out a tiny snort but continue the motions.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œMy momma used to do this when I was little.ā€ you whisper to him, keeping a low voice.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œI would be asleep in an instant.ā€ you emphasized with a quiet snap of your fingers.Ā Ā Ā
Spencerā€™s eyes flutter open to look up at you, his big doe eyes looking up to see your soft features be highlighted in the warm glow of the lamps. You look down at him and tilt your head.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œI might pass out like this.ā€ he murmured in a low voice.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œYou can if you want. Promise I wonā€™t let anyone bother you... not that anyoneā€™s coming in anytime soon.ā€ You drawl out looking around at the empty shop.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œJust a quick nap, twenty minutes.ā€ he told you, voice already fading and his eyes growing heavy.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You donā€™t respond to him, just continue stroking his hair until he falls asleep. He felt the warm mug leave his hands and he heard ceramic clank onto the wooded side table next to him.Ā Ā Ā
You watch Spencer sleep, giving him much longer than twenty minutes. His dark circles told enough; he needed this nap more than he was letting on. It takes less than five minutes for Spencer to pass out. His body relaxed into the chair with all tension leaving his body. You slow down your movements until you feel safe enough to stop. His small snore a sign he was asleep.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You moved to stand and went back to your duties, which wasnā€™t anything more than inventory tonight. Mondays were always slow.Ā Ā Ā
You moved about the bookshop, filing away books, crossing off things on your checklist, and beside the few customers that came in for less than twenty minutes each, the night was quiet. Enough so that you let Spencer sleep much longer than twenty minutes.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer sleeps peacefully for most of the night. You check on him occasionally, and besides the few snores, heā€™s sound asleep.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Around four in the morning he stirs awake, blinking blearily and looks around the store. You hear him and poke your head out from behind a shelf.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œGood morning sunshine!ā€ you teased in a chipper tone.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer looks at you confused before looking down at his watch. ā€œWhy didnā€™t you wake me up?ā€ he asked, tone not accusing, just confused.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You shrug and make your way over to him, ā€œYou looked like you needed the sleep.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
You gently reach your hand up to smooth the furrow of his brow. ā€œYouā€™ll die young from all that stress youā€™re carrying on your shoulders.ā€ You tell him softly. The way youā€™re gently touching his forehead is like youā€™re trying to erase the stress and pressure.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer sighs into the light touch, ā€œFor sleeping on a chair, it was pretty peaceful.ā€ he murmurs.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You snort in amusement. ā€œWell, at least I know theyā€™re comfy.ā€Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œI sleep on planes frequently, so this is much better.ā€ he said.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œTravel a lot for work?ā€ you asked.Ā Ā Ā
Spencer just nods. Not wanting to explore too deep into his job. The job that was leaving him sleepless most nights.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œDo you feel any better?ā€ you ask quietly.Ā Ā Ā Ā
He nods solemnly. ā€œBetter than when I arrived.ā€ he said with a shrug.Ā Ā Ā Ā
You frown but donā€™t press, youĀ push his hair back again giving him a reassuring smile.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œIā€™m a good listener if you ever need to talk. Promise.ā€ You holdĀ out your pinky finger in the childish gesture of a pinky promise.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Spencer finds himself smiling, finding it charming. Regardless of his problem with germs, it doesnā€™t feel so intense with you. Youā€™re not a stranger anymore. He hooks his pinky with yours.Ā Ā Ā Ā
ā€œNot now.ā€ He whispers. ā€œBut someday...ā€Ā Ā Ā
ā€œSomeday.ā€ you reaffirm.Ā Ā Ā
The one about familyĀ Ā Ā Ā
Spencerā€™s surprised to see that youā€™re not working one random night in November.Ā He knows that, of course, You canā€™t possibly be working every single night he comes in. It just throws him off when he doesnā€™t see you immediately. The sunshine woman behind the bar making him a new sickly-sweet coffee to try. Youā€™ve only ever missed one day max two, so he doesnā€™t think much of it. Just a blip on his night.Ā Ā Ā
One night without you suddenly turns into half a week. Every day Spencer walks in and itā€™s not your bright bubbly voice greeting him. Itā€™s one of the handful of people who work the late-night shift. They arenā€™t strangers, Spencerā€™s ran into a couple of them occasionally. So, when Spencer comes into the bookstore to see, yet again, Robert, manning the front desk lazily flipping through a magazine, his mild frustration turns to worry. You've been gone for four days and none of your coworkers seem to know why.Ā Ā Ā
What if youā€™re sick? What if something happened to you? Did you take a vacation? What if youā€™re in danger?Ā Ā Ā Ā
The thoughts consume Spencer so much he almost calls Garcia to track you down. Or at least give him your address to check on you. He pulls himself together and realizes that it would be a bad idea and an invasion of your privacy. Heā€™ll just have to wait it out.Ā Ā Ā
Spencer does wait, mostly because heā€™s forced too. The BAU never truly stops working.Ā Ā Ā
When he finally sees you again itā€™s near the tail end of November and way too close to Thanksgiving for his liking. He feels like you've been gone for ages, but itā€™s only been two weeks. The door chimes behind him as he walks in, heā€™s expecting to see yourĀ eyes light up with aĀ smile on your flushed pink cheeks. The way youā€™ve always greeted him. Ā Ā Ā
Instead, he sees a side of you that heā€™s not used to at all. You look tired, exhausted. The dark circles under your eyes could compete against his natural ones. Youā€™re wearing glasses which heā€™s never seen on you before. Her hair is haphazardly tied up, and You're in a large well-worn sweater that reads, ā€˜Read Banned Booksā€™.Ā He doesnā€™t think you've slept much, if at all, since he last saw you. Ā Ā Ā
You look like a zombie, barely functioning.Ā Ā Ā
You donā€™tĀ even register Spencer enter; you're standing at the checkout counter finishing a transaction with a customer. You're swaying on your feet the whole time. Ā Ā Ā
Spencer lets you finish the interaction before coming over to the counter, concern clear on his face.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œY/N?ā€ He says your name softly as he approaches. Ā Ā Ā
Your eyes fly up to him and widen a little in surprise, your body reacts with a small flinch. ā€œOh god Spencer!ā€ You give a soft laugh, your hand coming up to clutch your chest, ā€œYou scared me! I didnā€™t hear you come in.ā€ you try to calm yourself down.Ā Ā Ā
Your smile doesnā€™t reach your eyes and Spencer can tell. It doesnā€™t take a profiler to see youā€™re not yourself. Her eyes are only half open, your hands shaking from what he can only assume is the obscene amount of caffeine you probably have in your system. Everything just seems muted, notĀ the bright colors he used to see you framed in.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œAre you feelingĀ okay? Youā€™ve been gone for a while.ā€ he prompts, trying to get something out of you. A clue to what might have happened. Anything.Ā Ā Ā
You shake your head, ā€œIā€™m fine, everythingā€™s fine.ā€ You said it a little too quickly. Ā Ā Ā
Spencer doesnā€™t buy it, but heā€™s kept enough secrets to himself to know he probably shouldnā€™t go looking into friendsā€™ private lives. Some things he knows heā€™d rather keep to himself... but seeing you like this, he wants to help. Ā Ā Ā
You avoid his eyes and start to play with your hands on the counter. ā€œI-ā€ you open your mouth but promptly shut it again. You bite your cheek with a frown plastered on your face. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œSorry, itā€™s nothing. It doesnā€™t matter.ā€ you said quickly before turning to grab some books from behind the desk to busy yourself with. Ā Ā Ā
You don't want to talk about or think about it. Itā€™s been a long two weeks, and you just need some normalcy. Something that you know you can do and enjoy. Ā Ā Ā
You feel Spencerā€™s eyes burning into you. You try to keep your usual high energy, you truly do.Ā Everything has been so rough this month; you just need a break. The bookstore was your one solace. The Midnight Owl wasnā€™t just a job, it was your home. Your safe haven.Ā Ā Ā
You didnā€™t want to bring your real life here, not when sometimes your only highlight is seeing Spencer and sharing books back and forth. If he starts asking about your life outside the four walls of your shop, you donā€™t know if you can hold yourself together. Not today. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œY/N,ā€ he opens his mouth trying to get your attention again. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œReally Spencer, itā€™s fine,Ā Iā€™mĀ fine!ā€ you tell him, a short tone to your voice. Ā Ā Ā
You spin on your heels to walk somewhere, anywhere, else. ā€œYou know I have your book actually, let me return it. I left some notes in there.ā€Ā You make it five or six steps before you falter and sways again. Spencer reaches out to grab and steady you.Ā Ā
ā€œForget the book, you donā€™t look fine.ā€ He makes you face him. ā€œYou look exhausted.ā€ He chastises you. Ā Ā Ā
You deflate immediately and let Spencer guide you to a chair. He gently sets you down and he pries the book out of your hand and places itĀ on the side table. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œSorry, you donā€™t have to take care of me.ā€ you murmur feebly swatting him away. ā€œI just...ā€ You take a deep breath. ā€œI had to take dad to the hospital on Tuesday and itā€™s just been downhill all week...ā€ you admit timidly. You pushed your glasses up to your hairline and pressed the heels of your palm to your eyes. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œI havenā€™t gotten much sleep.ā€ you admit. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œYouā€™ve run yourself ragged.ā€ Spencer lowers himself to be eye level with you. ā€œIs he home now?ā€ he asks gently.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œNo, theyā€™re keeping him one more night.ā€ you said with a heavy sigh. Ā Ā Ā
Your arms fell in between your knees, and you lean your head back exhausted. ā€œItā€™s just been hard this past year...ā€ your voice is small and lingers with sadness. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œDo you want to talk about it?ā€ he asked hesitantly. Ā Ā Ā
Spencer maybe doesnā€™t like talking about his hardships, but heā€™ll listen to yours if you let him. He wants to desperately ease your mind, see you smile. Ā Ā Ā
You look up at him, eyes wide as you assess him. ā€œI donā€™t want to put my problems on you Spencer.ā€ you give a tight smile. ā€œIā€™ll figure it out.ā€Ā Ā Ā
Spencer reaches out to put a reassuring hand on your shoulder. ā€œTalking about it doesnā€™t mean that youā€™re inconveniencing me. I'm just worried.ā€Ā Ā Ā
You sigh, already feeling him chip away at you. You didnā€™t stand a chance against his big doe eyes looking at you like you were fragile. Ā Ā Ā
You take a deep breath before answering him, ā€œMy dad has ALS, he was diagnosed a few years ago... Iā€™ve been taking care of him.ā€ you admit. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œWhere we were, the doctors just werenā€™t cutting it. So, I did some research and of course there were stellar doctors in DC... plus my baby sister came here for university so I just thought... maybe it would be easier. On all of us.ā€ The tone of your voice gives your worry away. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œAnyway, he just, he had an accident and fell down the other day. His legs are finally giving out and heā€™s being so stubborn about needing a wheelchair.ā€ YourĀ voice shakes and you close your eyes. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œItā€™s been a long week.ā€ you finally admit looking up at Spencer with watery eyes. Ā Ā Ā
Spencer understands. Heā€™s spent most of his life taking care of his mom because of her own illness. While your dad is suffering from something different, he understands. Probably more than you realize. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œI get it, I do.ā€ he said. You go to retort, but he cuts you off. ā€œI took care of my mom for a long time. She...ā€ He pauses looking at you, debating for a moment on if he should tell you. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œMy mom has schizophrenia, and I committed her when I was eighteen.ā€ he tells you with a tight frown.Ā Ā Ā
ā€œItā€™s hard to take care of your parents, especially when itā€™s their job to take care of us.ā€ He tells you sincerely.Ā Ā Ā
You have tears pricking your eyes, ā€œOh Spencer, Iā€™m so sorry.ā€Ā Ā Ā
He shakes his head, ā€œIā€™m telling you this because I understand. I promise I do, itā€™s not easy.ā€ Ā Ā Ā
You take a shaky breath; your heart feels like itā€™s a thousand pounds. ā€œDoes it ever get easier?ā€ you ask softly. Ā Ā Ā
Spencer squeezes your hand, ā€œNo, it doesnā€™t. There are happy moments though. Moments where you know youā€™re doing the right thing, even if itā€™s difficult.ā€ Ā Ā Ā
You sniffle and wipes your face, ā€œThanks, I uh, I needed that.ā€ you said with a small smile. Ā Ā Ā
-Ā Ā Ā
Itā€™s getting closer to Christmas. The bookstore is decorated and busier than ever. Thereā€™s a handful of special events but between people coming in to buy presents and university students staying all night to study for finals, you have yourĀ hands full. Ā Ā Ā
Thereā€™s a second staff member working nights with you this month until the holiday break starts for the store. You and Josie were adamant about closing the bookstore between Christmas Eve and New Years. If someone needed a book that badly they could go to a big box store. Ā Ā Ā
What you really donā€™t need right now is your baby sister coming to your place of work and harassing you about Christmas and your dad. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œBridget, I donā€™t have time to discuss this with you right now!ā€ you hiss out at your younger sister. ā€œYou didnā€™t spend Thanksgiving with us and daddy really wants you to come home just for Christmas.ā€ you chastised your sister with a frown. Ā Ā Ā
You have a pause in customers for the moment, but you know that the large study group is coming in half an hour like they have been for the past week and half. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œThatā€™s not fair Magpie!ā€ your sister groans in frustration using your nickname to try and be sweet. ā€œI made these plans months ago; Mark really wants me to spend Christmas with his family.ā€Ā Ā
You cross your arms and look at your sister sadly. ā€œBirdie, we donā€™t know how much time we get with dad-ā€ you start but is cut off. Ā Ā Ā
Bridgetā€™s face scrunches in disgust at her sisterā€™s words and huffs exaggeratedly. ā€œGood god Y/N! Heā€™s not gonna die over the holidays, stop fucking guilt trippinā€™ me over every decision because it doesnā€™t revolve around dad!ā€ Ā Ā Ā
Bridgetā€™s annoyed and you can tell, she always tries to skirt around her problems when sheā€™s frustrated. She thinks youā€™re trying to back her into a corner. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œBirdie-ā€ Ā Ā Ā
ā€œItā€™s Bri. I go by Bri here.ā€ Her sister crosses her arms and looks at you in annoyance. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œLook, I know dadā€™s sick, Iā€™m not stupid.ā€ Ā Ā Ā
ā€œI didnā€™t say you were Bridget.ā€ you said defensively.Ā Ā Ā
She rolled her eyes, ā€œI didnā€™t decide to pack everything up and move dad out to DC. Just because youā€™re closer doesnā€™t mean Iā€™m going to stop living my life to take care of daddy.ā€ Ā Ā Ā
You bite your tongue. Trying to not fight with your sister, but your irritation rises in your throat. Burning words of resentment linger in your mind. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œFine. Would you please just call him on Christmas and please come by after the New Year. He really misses you.ā€ You try to plead with your sister. Ā Ā Ā
Bridget just waves goodbye as she walks out the door, ā€œWill do. See you next year Magpie.ā€ she almost ran out the door. Ā Ā Ā
You deflate, your shoulders dropping. You almost donā€™t hear Spencer walking up next to you holding a gift bag in his hands. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œIĀ didnā€™t know your sister visited you.ā€ he said. Ā Ā Ā
You look up at him and smile at your favorite regular. Your friend. You think theyā€™re allowed to call each other friends now. He already saw you cry and that was a big step. Ā Ā Ā
You shake your head, ā€œYeah, weā€™re not as close as we used to be.ā€ you mumble under your breath. Ā Ā Ā
Spencer nods his head. He never had any siblings, but he can read your face well enough to know youā€™re not thrilled.Ā Ā
ā€œStill close enough for nicknames, Magpie?ā€ he asked, biting back a smile.Ā Ā
ā€œChildhood nicknames, Birdie and Magpie. Cause we were birds of a feather.ā€ You said looking down at your hands sadly.Ā Ā
ā€œItā€™s fine.ā€ you shrug it off and give a smile that doesnā€™t reach your eyes. You lean against the counter. ā€œWhatā€™s that you got there?ā€ you asked, changing the subject. Ā Ā Ā
Youā€™re pointing to the gift bag in his hands. You tilt your head curiously. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œOh, this is,ā€ he flushes for a split second rushing his words out. ā€œThis is for you. I know youā€™re closing for the holiday soon and I donā€™t know if Iā€™ll have a last-minute work call or not so., I brought your Christmas present.ā€ He fumbled through his words quickly, but he held out the small bag.Ā Ā Ā
You light up immediately. Your eyes shimmer with excitement. ā€œAww, Spencer! This is so kind thank you!ā€ Ā Ā Ā
You bend down below the counter and grabs your own item, ā€œI actually have your present too.ā€ you said shyly, handing him a wrapped package. Ā Ā Ā
Spencer is quiet as he gently takes the gift from you, a tiny smile on his face. He brushes his hair back out of his face as he looks at you softly. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œThis is so kind thank you.ā€ Ā Ā Ā
Giddy giggles consume you, and you hold the gift bag. ā€œShould we open them together or do you want to wait until Christmas?ā€ you asked. Ā Ā Ā
Spencer shakes his head, ā€œNo no, you can open it now.ā€ He reassures you. Ā Ā Ā
You smile, biting the inside of your cheek and open yourĀ present. Under the tissue paper is a sweater thatā€™s twice your size and itā€™s the softest thing youā€™ve ever felt. You pull it out and itā€™s a purple crocheted sweater with a beautiful sun right in the middle. It reminds you of one of the tapestries from the late nineties that would have been inĀ Practical MagicĀ or something like that. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œOh Spencer, this is perfect.ā€ you say quietly holding it tightly to your chest. ā€œThank you so much, I love it.ā€ Ā Ā Ā
You pull off your cardigan and immediately shove the sweater on. You nestle yourself inside it and grins widely, ā€œIt matches your scarf!ā€ Ā Ā Ā
Spencer just takes in your joy and how you light up, and heā€™s happy he could make you feel better. Ā Ā Ā
ā€œWell go on open yours!ā€ you said excitedly pushing your wrapped package toward him.Ā Ā Ā
Spencer gently peels back the wrapping paper and uncovers a white box; he opens the box to find a ceramic mug. It's custom made, with some uneven texture. Itā€™s glazed a speckled purple and wrapped around the bottom is a quote,Ā ā€œSome books are so familiar that reading them is being home again.ā€ -L.M. AlcottĀ Ā Ā Ā
Spencer is quietly inspecting it, and you start explaining. You push your hair behind your ear, ā€œI uh, I took a pottery class in my free time this past year. Since youā€™re here so much I thought you would like your own mug.ā€ you said hesitantly. Ā Ā Ā
Spencerā€™s eyes widen, ā€œYou, youĀ madeĀ this? For me?ā€ he asked in surprise. Ā Ā Ā
You nod, looking down at the counter nervously. Ā Ā Ā
Spencer makes his way around the counter and pulls you into a tight hug. ā€œThis is the best gift anyone's ever gotten me.ā€ he whispers to you. Ā Ā Ā
You return the hug holding Spencer tightly. You press your face into his shoulder, and you feel infinitely better than how your night started.Ā Ā Ā
When they pull apart you play with the edge of the new sweaters' sleeves, a small blush on your face. ā€œDo you go visit your mama for holidays?ā€ you asked him. Ā Ā Ā
Spencer shakes his head, ā€œNot all the time. My job doesnā€™t usually care if itā€™s a holiday or not.ā€ he tells you. Ā Ā Ā
You nod, ā€œWell, I hope you get to this year Spencer. Iā€™m sure sheā€™d love to see you.ā€ Ā Ā Ā
He takes a shaky breath and nods in agreement. ā€œYeah, Iā€™ll try to see her soon.ā€ Ā Ā Ā
You nudge him lightly, trying to keep the tone light, ā€œWant a fresh drink in your new mug?ā€ you tease.Ā Ā Ā
Spencer chuckles but nods his head. ā€œIā€™d love that.ā€ Ā Ā Ā
ā€œWeā€™re about to test run if Iā€™m actually good at pottery. So, fingers crossed it doesnā€™t leak.ā€ you joke moving to the cafe counter at the back of the store.Ā Ā Ā
Spencer watches you walk away, with a skip in your step like the first night he came to the Midnight Owl. The way you easily glide through the crowd and chatter with customers and giggling. Ā Ā Ā
You shine bright like a star, like the sun.Ā Ā

Welcome to hour one of my delusional city
SO ABOUT JINX.... we have plenty to discuss. :))
*act three arcane spoilers under the cut don't read if you haven't watched it especially the last episode!!*
I have a theory.
Now many of you will point at me and call me delusional but I'm sorry. I think I might be right on this one for a change. (or at least it might be implied.)
OK, if you watch the final episode, you know that jinx made the sacrifice taking Warwick with her while Vi screams for her. This scene absolutely broke my heart and for about a good 15 minutes I thought she was dead.
Until I went back and watched the last couple of scenes.
Something that I found interesting is that Caitlyn was looking at the blueprint of the vent system, more specifically where Jinx made her ultimate sacrifice. We all know that arcane is not a show that would just throw in details all without reason. Everything has a point everything is calculated to either imply something or show something.
Why would Caitlyn be looking at the blueprint and why would the show creators specifically zoom in on certain airways? Well, of course, then none other to imply that Jinx could've escaped through one of these, therefore possibly surviving.
Now with that alone, it probably doesn't mean anything. It is nothing but a skeleton of what possibly could be, it needs flesh and muscle for it to actually be a Working theory.
But then, as I watched the final scene before the credits, tell me why an airship from Piltover airship very similar to the ones that we saw in episode one where powder said that she would be flying one of those one day. Why was it flying away into the distant sky, then followed by the classic Jinx glitches with the words the end?
Tell me why a show that is so focused on each, and every small detail, from micro expression to touches that linger just a second too long for it to be nothing, Even the drawings and graffiti around Zaun. why would a show so focused on those types of details do something like that if Jinx was not alive? It does not make any sense. It would not make any sense for the show.
Need more proof?
if you pay attention when Caitlyn and Vi are talking, specifically towards the end where Vi leans into Caitlyn, the expression on her face is not one of relief, but rather one of knowing something. She was the one looking at the blueprint, and she was the one who noticed the potential escape route that jinx would know better than anyone because it wasn't her sort of Home in the vent system? How could she not know how to escape?
it's also very satisfactory to her character arc, it was only in season two where we started to see her perception of death start to shift, it was only when Isha came into her life that she really started to understand her own mortality and not completely disregard her life like she used. the prison scene with Vi, where she's sort of regresses back to the mentality of everyone around me will get hurt because of me. while in act three she did begin to disregard her life again, I would like to think that her talk with Ekko might've snapped her back into place. So instead of losing jinx's character development in its entirety, she continues on the same path where she was while still keeping her goal of letting VI be happy the same.
Plus the pink streak coming up the side of the hex gate tower, it's similar to the way that Jinx charges at Vi in their fighting scene.
Now, this is the part where you go into the comments and call me delusional and make fun of my theory but thank you for comming to my Ted's talk

There, there, lovely. It's all going to be okay. You just had a dysphoria episode. We will get through this, I promise.
You start to tear up as you remember the nightmare you woke up from experiencing. You remember every little detail: you had a mistress, she kept insulting you, you were about to be r**** by an unknown man, you couldn't run away, and worst of all, you were a man in the dream! But not just any man; you were your old self in a much weaker form that even in your old feminization fantasies you couldn't picture becoming.
You grabbed your phone to call for some support. It's Melissa. She heard you crying in the background. "Babe, what's wrong? Why are you calling this late? Did someone try to hurt you?" You proceeded to tell her your entire nightmare and wondered if this was all going to be true one day. "Am I just... not a real woman?" Melissa knows all the answers. If you ever needed some help or a second opinion, Melissa was your go-to woman. "Babe, can you do me a favor, please, and look at yourself to the closest mirror?" You obey and do it.
"What do you see? Can you tell me in full detail?" You see yourself and are shocked! When did you dye your hair blonde!? Not only that, but you resemble a Barbie doll! You're wearing a pink lingerie set, white stockings, nice long pink nails, and a cute pink bow to flow with your beautiful long blonde hair. Your heart beats faster as you notice how femme you look. "This is... me?"
"Honey, you were always a woman. It's just that it took you long to embrace her on the outside." You fall in love with the bombshell you've become. Almost like a Disney princess*. "I'm... I'm beautiful.... I'm.. I'm really a woman..." "That's the spirit, girlie! You were just experiencing dysphoria. It's unfortunately common among trans girls, but you'll get through this!" Just as you thank Melissa for her therapy talk with you, she pauses you, "Ah, don't forget to take your hormones. I know it's not fun to take prog rectally, but it's what will help you embrace your change faster. Anyways, sleep well and we'll talk more tomorrow. K bye!"
You take your progesterone as followed and are not used to putting it inside. Meanwhile, you decide to observe the woman looking back at you. How did you became so beautiful? And how long have you been taking hormones? A rushing feeling of euphoria starts to turn you on as you stare at your image in the mirror. You start to rub yourself with your thighs and start to grope your breasts a bit. You start to pant from the steaming sensation and grind yourself a bit. Suddenly, you imagine yourself having sex with a man.
"Oh, god, I... I'm starting to feel so horny right now!" You can't contain yourself and start to play with your own body. Before you know it, you climaxed after having intense fantasies for a few minutes. "I... I.... I let myself out. Did I... really became a woman?" You haven't realized it, but you're well over 20 months in hormones now, 8 in progesterone. The only reason why you had this nightmare to begin is because... you're about to have your FFS tomorrow morning. SRS is about to be next. Is this really the point of no return?
(End of 20 months)

jesus. yeah thank god for preaching the truth about arcane season two. i mean it had its moments - really, REALLY good moments, and by hell it looked AMAZING - but holy FUCK. what a terrible time to be a fan of ekko. or mel. or jinx. or vi. or viktor. or ambessa. or sevika. and probably more i'm missing (ISHA!!!).
i completely agree with everything about the zaun vs. piltover situation ... just not happening this season? first with shimmer - listen i am not the biggest fan of the chembarons lol they look nice but their characters are. Fine. but if you're going to hype them up in the second episode make them WORTH something, right? and then if you're going to hype up the new jinxers, make THAT worth something too!! would it have been so hard to have a bunch of zaunites fly into piltover following jinx? i mean, that's what everyone THOUGHT that scene would be? you had sevika LEAVE the council meeting. why don't you have jinx convincing her to help. and ekko's with jinx. why wasn't he reunited with the firelights? you're telling the fucking firelights would leave zaun? no but it's just them i guess. and sevika and other zaunites enter the fray at essentially the same time so you would have to change nothing but whaaaatever who gives a fuck.
SPEAKING. OF. EKKO. WHAT THE HELL? his FINAL scene in this show is him mourning jinx and being completely alone. we can have that scene, OBVIOUSLY (given that jinx dies - or fake-dies - which i have my own problems with) but... can bro get a seat on the council? please? can we have like a scene with him and sevika walking in and he nods at sevika or something. i know people were complaining about it being mostly pilties and just sevika at the council meeting but i LOVE that. genuinely. shows us that progress is going to be slow (wow crazy. arcane having realistic class issues in their show about class issues), but can it not be just sevika? and can ekko get some fucking credit for SAVING PILTOVER? sure sure sure it was jayce and viktor but WHO THREW. THE GODDAMN ZDRIVE. AT VIKTOR'S HEAD? EKKO. jesus sorry i'm just crazy upset about that.
i wish they also didn't just have the council in piltover? if we're being given an independent zaun (ARE WE BEING GIVEN AN INDEPENDENT ZAUN??????????????) can we maybe have meetings in zaun too? one of those cute little transitions behind sevika's head where they're meeting in piltover's council room and then we go to the meeting room in zaun? like fucking what? or maybe zaun isn't fucking independent what were we watching this show for. if you're going to keep zaun as part of piltover and leave that part open can you maybe elaborate more than sevika like... sitting down. im a bitch for subtext but at some point it's not subtext it's being lazy??
and meljay. not sure what else to say here tbh like i don't even love them and i thought they were handled so poorly. at least they had chemistry in season one? the fuck was their reunion in act 3? negative chemistry. jayce is imagining viktor. why does he have more chemistry with viktor. big jayvik fan btw im a big fucking jayvik fan but can it NOT come at the expense of an established ship? porque no los dos? like hello? does meljayvik mean nothing to the writers? if you're going to have shippers putting the JayVik Agenda (which admittedly i think is very real of them) into the show can you COMPROMISE ABOUT IT. like considering mel's lonely ass ending and ekko's lonely ass ending there might be a goddamn pattern here.
wow. speaking of lonely ass endings. JINX. MY GIRL???????? breaking down her "death": we have jinx, safe, on a ledge. and we have vi and warwick about to fucking die. vi is faced with two options: try and save warwick (bring back vander) or go to jinx. vi isn't AWARE that trying to save warwick is going to come at the expense at jinx, but WE do, and the WRITERS do. the option of saving warwick or going to jinx is the SAME FUCKING OPTION as the jinx vs. powder question at the end of season one. does vi try and bring back a dead man (one who is GONE, who represents jinx and vi's past coming back to haunt them) or does vi try and accept her trauma and forge a new future with jinx?
...she chooses vander. like ok. yes. that makes sense given the amount of time vi has had to process that vander is alive. and a wolf. and then dead. and then back. and still a wolf. and then fighting them. and then not fighting them. im not expecting her in that situation to take jinx's hand and move on. but if that's the case can the arcane writers then.. give her time to process? because this isn't GOOD. this isn't good for vi. this isn't good for jinx. also do you know what also isn't good for vi OH MY GOD CAITLIN. CAITLIN ISN'T WHY DID THEY HAVE SEX AFTER JINX WAS LIKE "SORRY SIS GOING TO KILL MYSELF" LIKE HELLO VI YOU HAVE OTHER PRIORITIES THIS IS JUST LIKE WHEN YOU LEFT EKKO ON THE BRIDGE WHAT. HELLO. WHAT. WHAT. WHAT.
"im the dirt under your nails" no vi caitlin is the blood under yours.
sorry ok this isn't all my problems with arcane season two but i just realized i've been ranting in your inbox for what's probably over 100 words so maybe i should stop now. sorry bro i may or may not make my own post now mb
NO PROB it's big feelings and opinions time here on eerna dot tumblr~ It's just a terrible time to be a fan of the show methinks. I don't think a single character emerged on the other side of this season by having been done right.
I hated the way the Zaunites refusing to help Piltover was treated like some kind of a dramatic "Well, I guess THEY aren't joining US" scene. Usually we get to see both sides so you don't feel like either side is the main character, but that was such a horrible "You, the viewer, are a Piltie now, and the way Zaunites act will from now on be used as plot twists only" POV. Sevika showed up that way, Jinx and Ekko showed up that way - not as main characters, but as supports to Vi and Cait and Mel and Jayce, the Good Pilties.
"im the dirt under your nails" no vi caitlin is the blood under yours. is such a badass quote, bro!!! I have nothing to add, you've said it all, thanks for sharing~

JINX IS ALIVE AND I CAN PROVE IT!
OK so, in the final episode of arcane Jinx blows herself up along with Vander/Warwick so she must be dead right?
WRONG
Here's my evidences
1. Foreshadowing, The Airship
Arcane is full of foreshadowing, nothing in this show is meaningless, repeating motifs and Chekhov's guns are plenty. In the very first act in episode 1 of the show the first words out Powders mouth to the audience is "One day, I'm gonna ride in one of those things.", this is in reference to an airship floating past.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The start of the shot has the ship fly above the camera and allow us to see the back fans. See how this frame is set, its a establishing shot with a focal point on the left side with the airship above the horizon line on the left. Now look at the end shot of act 3 season 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is a replace, a beat for beat copy of the first airship shot, arcane is the most expensive animated show to ever be produced, this is not a coincidence, this is foreshadowing. Its telling the audience that Powder fulfilled her wish. But there's more.
2. Repeating motifs, Jinx's scribbles/ film noise
At the end of the act3 s3's shot is this glitched out end card, before it for a few frames we se film noise. Film noise is when dust or other stuff gets on the film roll creating white specks and streaks, this is significant because its a running motif with Jinx and her hallucinations.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first image is the end scene of arcane while the second image is from ep6 s1, notice the white streaks in each. Film noise, it only appears with Jinx, its a visual motif of hers, denoting her grip on reality and saying to the audience that she is here, its her motif.
3. Visual story telling, Caitlyn, The Monkey, The Hexgate and Shimmer
Caitlyn is first and foremost a detective, she is a brilliant minded woman who was able to figure out most of Silco's plot without any contact in the undercity, she has a keen eye for detail and can reconstruct in her mind a crime scene as seen in ep 4 s1.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see her in the final minutes of ep 9 s2 pondering Jinx's "death", I think she believes Jinx is still alive and is gathering evidence.
Tumblr media
She has with her the monkey head of the monkey bomb Jinx used. It is the same one as the bomb, the same red paint on the ear and middle nail. But here's the thing, if the monkey head survived getting blow up, there should be remnants of Jinx's body or cloths or anything but we are show nothing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This tells me Caitlyn also thinks Jinx is alive and is trying to figure out how. She looking through her mothers archives on Jayce's blueprints of the hexgate. and she zooms in onto the part of the blueprints that show vent ways in roughly the same area Jinx would have fell, meaning that Jinx had an escape route out of the hexgate and away from the explosion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This leads me on to my finale point of the visual story telling and it has to do with shimmer. Jinx gains this uncanny speed with shimmer and when she uses this new power we see these trails of pink. In this new season we also see how she seeming goes so fast we cant see her except for the trails of shimmer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This leads me to the explosion, if we slow it down we see the same pink glowing streak rushing away from the explosion. Jinx used her shimmer speed to get out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We only ever seen this pink streak is with Jinx and other shimmer enhanced people but Jinx is the only one with this ludicrous speed that could outrun an explosion.
I do believe Jinx lives, there is to much evidence and frankly, Jinx is to much of a money maker for Riot to just kill off. I bet we will be seeing her soon in Riot's new show even if its small cameo

23/11/2024, Log of DARKNEBULA85, 1:16 PM...
SPOILERS: Special Edition, Arcane Season 2, Episodes 7-8-9...
As Iā€™m writing this, itā€™s 4:20 in the morning. Iā€™m on a 24-hour shift, but here I am, watching the new episodes as theyā€™ve just come out. The hype Iā€™m feeling is so intense that Iā€™m not even a little bit sleepy. Episode 7 is both the most beautiful and the most heartbreaking thing Iā€™ve seen in this series. I spent the entire episode thinking, "If only everything had gone right, this is how it all could have endedā€¦ā€ Seeing all the characters together and alive (except Vi) made me so happy, yet it was killing me inside because, in our reality, itā€™s the complete opposite. Can we all agree that Ekko is the hero of this series??? A guy who had everything taken from him, suddenly gets it all back, and then has to give it up again to save his people. He succeeds in the end, but itā€™s still so tragic, he accomplished his mission but was left alone, without his family, friends, or the girl he loved. Itā€™s devastating.I was absolutely crushed by the death of my favorite psychotic blue-haired girl because I held onto hope until the very last second that she would surviveā€¦ But alas, it seems that in both universes, the sisters canā€™t be happy together. One of them always has to die. Still, Iā€™m glad they each had someone to lean on as they mourned their lost sister (Vi with Cait, Powder with Ekko). And Heimerdinger? My poor little guy died, and no one even noticed. At least he went out happy, knowing he gave someone else the chance to achieve what he couldnā€™t. And Jayceā€¦ I always had faith in him. Iā€™ve supported him since the first season, and I held back from criticizing him in earlier episodes because I knew there was a reason behind his actions. And, oh boy, there sure was. By the way, Ambessaā€™s design is hands down my favorite, what an absolutely spectacular character design. And the endingā€¦ Itā€™s perfect. Everything about this series is perfect. Iā€™ve tried to think of a single bad thing about it, and I just canā€™t. I donā€™t think weā€™ll see another show this perfect for a long time, itā€™s a true masterpiece in every sense of the word.I really hope the creators expand this universe. Thereā€™s still so much left to explore and so many storylines to wrap up, like the Black Rose. If youā€™ll excuse me, Iā€™m now going to cry myself to sleep, considering I havenā€™t slept since 8 a.m. yesterday.
Tumblr media
Yo seguirĆ© en negaciĆ³n creyendo para mi mismo que Jinx sigue viva
Edit 10:53 PM... DUDE Iā€™m at a party, and thereā€™s literally a guy who looks EXACTLY like Vander. Same clothes, same hair, same beard, same sizeā€¦ I feel like crying and I want to die šŸ˜

Arcane Season 2 - How Bad Pacing Can Ruin Everything
So, Arcane season 2 ended. And I am sorry, I need to vent.
I am honestly not sure whether the rumors are true and this were originally meant to be more seasons. The Riot CEO apparently denies it, but then again, I have seen CEOs confidently go out on stages to talk about a project which they knew was cancelled at that point in time. So, sorry, but I will never ever trust a CEO. Lying is like 50% of their jobs. Being greedy is the other half. Sorry, not sorry.
I am gonna write something about disability in Arcane (overall) during the next few days, but let me just talk a bit about the pacing issues of season 2.
Spoilers for season 2 - all of it - obviously.
Believe me or not, but I know the exact issue of Arcane season 2. It is called: Too many characters. Too many plotlines. It is something that easily happens when writing an ensemble story (no matter what the format is you publish the story in - it happens in books, movies, shows, games). At times it works fine if you manage to weave the entire ensemble into the same main plot. But as soon as you wanna give everyone their own little storyarc with a bit of their own themes, it often goes haywire. Either you will end up dropping some characters to the side and not properly finish up their story, or you will end up rushing everything. Neither is gonna be good.
Here I am mainly thinking... Was the entire Black Rose/LaBlanc stuff planned to be there from the beginning? Was it put in later? I mean, given that the entire story felt like it might set up Mel as a Champion for LoL... How do I put it? Mel was too overdesigned in the show, to not be a future Champion. That was my feeling from the beginning. I don't know if they gonna make her a Champion, but man, it feels like it.
But no, the main issue really is the pacing. There is just too much stuff happening.
I will remain, that the thing that shows this better than anything was the second "arc" of season 2. Episode 4-6. And the general way the entire Caitlyn, Vi, Jinx thing plays out. We have the following things happen in the first six episodes of season 2:
Cait's mother dies
Cait swears revenge and asks Vi to assist her as an enforcer
Vi does not want to. Ends up getting drunk.
Vi decides to do it anyway.
They do a bit of chemical warfare for good measures.
They go down there. Fight Jinx. Vi cannot do it - partly because Isha.
Cait breaks up with Vi and becomes the evil fascist dictator
Vi becomes an alcohol addict.
Except, never mind, Caitlin is already feeling shitty about it next episode.
Jinx gets Vi and Magic Pixie Dreamgirls her out of her new-found addiction.
Jinx and Vi are good again. They go help Vander.
Cait meets Vi for the first time since the break up. They instantly are back on the same page.
Like, there is so many plothooks in this storyline alone that do go completely unexplored.
There are two characters here, that do play a role in the last three episodes too and that felt like they were some proper characters at some point. Those two are Maddie - the Scottish-dialect enforcer girl - and... Frankly, I do not feel like looking up the name. The big burly one, who after the break-up takes care of Vi.
Those two feel like they were at some point meant to be more real characters. But because of the pacing, they are barely ideas. Maddie starts making out with Caitlyn because...? I don't know. Because I literally do not know anything about this character but "she is an enforcer", "she is queer", "she is attracted to power(?)", and thats it.
And the other guy goes with Vi because... Uhm... I don't know. I know literally nothing about this chaaracter other than that he is big and an enforcer. *shrugs*
It most certainly feels like there was some planned version of this show, in which Cait and Vi both had a proper corruption arc. In which we really saw the two of them struggle. In which we actually saw Piltover and Zaun under the control of Commander Caitlyn and Noxus, and saw the horrible things they were doing and what it was doing with Caitlyn. In which we also saw Vi struggling with addiction and stuff.
But that was not the version we got in the end. Instead in this version... things go magically well.
Hooray?
Same with Jinx. Her mental health issues just magically get better when Isha is there, because that is what the story needs to happen now.
Here, too, it also feels like huge chunks of the story are missing. It feels like there was a story going more into the relationship of Sevika and Jinx for a bit. But if that story had been there once, it was most certainly no longer there. It was hinted at, yeah, but that's it.
And then there is the entire magic plot.
Look, I think among the fans of the LoL Lore I am not the first one to say: "Yeah, trying to marry the worldbuilding of Arcane to the established Runeterra worldbuilding does not work, because of the magic." Runeterra so far was always a fairly high magic world - at least that was implied by comics and short stories. Magic was a common thing in this world. Otherwise we could not have that many magic champions and a whole place whose entire thing it had been: "We are anti-magic Nazis building mage concentration camps!"
When Riot said, that Arcane was now the main canon, A LOT of fans of the lore were like: "You get that it is not gonna work." And yeah, Arcane Season 2 clearly shows how it doesn't work.
Because the way they put in the entire "Mel is magic, also the Black Rose is a thing" stuff just... It did not fit in the entire plot around it. Because Arcane had been designed as a world where magic was very rare and strange. But now Mel had to be magic and somehow had to be connected to the Black Rose.
Also... What the fuck even happened there in the end? Why put that in? Why make Mel go against LaBlanc? I am sorry, but that was simply too much for this plot. The entire Black Rose stuff stuck out of this plot like - pardon the pun - a thorn.
Generally there are several relationships that feel, like they had at one point been a whole more explored, but then got dropped to the wayside.
As I said, Sevika and Jinx are definitely an example. Ekko and Heimerdinger as well. I also feel like what was episode 7 of the show was probably originally more than one episodes and slower paced - though it still to me was the one episode in this, that kinda worked in of itself. And that the Ekko and Jinx relationship was better established.
I also feel that Viktor and that echo of Skye was probably at some point supposed to actually have talks. Like: "I will miss talking to you." - "No, you won't." Okay? THEN SHOW ME THEM TALKING PLEASE?!
Which kinda brings me down to the main thing that happened because of the pacing issue. Season 2 of Arcane knew only two extremes in terms of "Show, don't tell". Either it goes full "music video" in whcih indeed it just shows us shit without context or dialogue - or we get the information just via dialogue, in a complete tell.
This also shows in the last episode, with the entire thing of Piltover asking the Zaunites for help, after brutally surpressing them forever. Yeah, I see where they were going with this. About being the bigger people and planting seeds and what not. But frankly, there might have been a time and space for a story like that, if properly told (you know, with giving more of the Zaunites a voice in this story, showing more of the conflict and spacing this plot out over several episodes). But a) it was not properly told, and b) a world in which several genocides happen while Trump somehow won a second term is not that world. Yes, b) is not the fault of anyone working on Arcane. That was simply bad luck on their part. But a) is very much their fault - and even if we did not have a Palestinian Genocide and no second Trump term: Without a) being done properly, it would not have worked. It would have just not felt quite as miserable.
You know, the most frustrating thing about this was, that... While I think that one way or another I would still have hated how the show handles the topic of disability (again, I will write about this during the next few days), I generally might have liked the same plot, if it had been given the needed space to breathe.
Like... Sure, I would have never really been on board with "fascist Caitlyn", or rather with "fascist Caitlyn, who gets then forgiven by everyone". But I could have somewhat swallowed it, if that forgiveness had to be earned. But because of the breakneck speed of this show, it never got earned. I am not even talking about redemption arcs here - those are always a headache - but specifically about the fact that Caitlyn gets instantly forgiven by everyone.
Also, lol. The entire thing with Ekko convincing Jinx to come along off-screen. That was unelegant.
Heck, it feels in the first four episodes, as if there was an arc being set up for Sevika in general. And it feels like that arc needed to happen, given that Sevika ends up on the COUNCIL OF PILTOVER in the epilogue. However, that Arc just does not happen. Then, like... why set it up?
That is general the issue. There is a lot of set-up and very, very little payoff to any of it.
And here is the thing. I have heard people argue about whether or not this was meant to have more seasons. But frankly: I do not think that the writers who wrote season 1 would have written this story this way had they known it would be two seasons.
Mind you, compared to some people I would not rate the writing in season 1 higher than maybe 6 or 7 of 10. It was solid, but not overwhelmingly great. But season 2 in comparison is a 2 of 10, maybe a 3 of 10, if I am being gracious.
And frankly, I do not think any writer, who is in any way worth their salt, would write a story where a main character goes evil, and then do exactly nothing with it. I mean, sorry, us writers, we are a dramatic bunch. And we will not resist the drama being served on a silver platter unless we are forced too. I cannot imagine a single writer, who will go with the end of episode 3 and then not write a bunch of angst with Caitlyn and Vi - unless they were forbidden.
And mind you, CaitVi is by far the ship I am least invested in. But it is simply such a glaring example of where the plot is rushed in a way that it hinders the character arcs.
Oh, and also... Lest. Lest in the first six episodes clearly felt like a character, who was going to play a role. Only to then disappear to not be seen again during the finale. What happened to Lest? Is she dead? Is she alive? I guess we'll never know.
*sighs* I am sorry. I really am. I am just... very disappointed. This has been a mess. And I think it would not have needed to be.
Like, the animation is still the most pretty thing ever made in the world. But man... The plot? The plot sucks balls. And not in the sexy way.

Okay, so I actually do want to get my thoughts down on why I didn't like season two as much as season one. This is going to be a lot of complaining, but keep in mind that while I don't think season two was as good as season one, I think season one was S tier. Season two was B tier. B tier is still pretty damn good, but it is a noticeable drop, and is disappointing considering that this is the show's finale. But with that said, please do not reblog this yammering about how much you hate the show, you're glad it's over, etc. Despite my criticisms, I don't feel that way, and I don't want to see that on my post.
With that said:
My biggest problem with the show overall is that, between seasons one and two, they seem to have remembered that this is supposed to be a video game show, and so felt compelled to abandon their focus on character work in favor of flashy action sequences. This isn't me being in la la land thinking that season one had no action sequences; obviously it had fight scenes as well. But season one had a heavy emphasis on the characters, their internal worlds and struggles, that I feel was sorely lacking in season two.
The best way to demonstrate why I feel this is is to look at the final episodes of each season. Season one ended with Jinx's family dinner party. That entire scene was one long conversation; although there was a bit of action when Caitlyn freed herself from her bonds and got Pow-Pow (and then Jinx knocked her out and took Pow-Pow back), that isn't what I would call a fight. Neither was Silco shooting at Vi / Jinx killing Silco. Instead, the scene consisted of Jinx walking back and forth along the table, trying to figure out whether Vi or Silco loved her most, and who she should be with therefore. It ends with a quiet, mournful song as Jinx fires the rocket, right as the Piltovan council was deciding in favor of Zaun's independence.
By contrast, the final episode of season two is pretty much a 40 minute battle sequence. The character exploration they could have had (e.g. Ekko convincing Jinx not to commit suicide) was omitted completely in favor of this battle sequence. We couldn't even see Piltover prepare for the battle. Instead, it cut straight from discussion of what they had to do to prepare, to the battle itself. Ekko convincing Jinx was omitted, Jinx making her decision was omitted, Sevika and the Firelights being convinced was omitted, Vi mourning her sister was omitted, how Sevika ended up joining the council was omitted. The only character work we had in the last episode at all was what was between Jayce and Viktor, and even that was barely anything, time-wise, in comparison to all of the battle scenes. (And the fact that the only character work in the finale was between two men when this series was supposed to be about two sisters . . . don't even get me started.)
While the animation in this show is the best animation I've ever seen, periodā€”and while the action sequences always look fantastic because of thatā€”I feel that the shift in focus from character work to action was to the show's detriment. What made Arcane so good, in my opinion, was not the animationā€”or at least, not just the animation. It was the character work. The fact that we had these three dimensional characters, each with their own rich, internal worlds that drove the story forwardā€”that was what made it worth watching. So to cut that out, and relegate it either to music video montages or off-screen conversations, was a mistake. The characters suffered for it, and so did the story. It turned it from a masterpiece of a narrative, to just another good show. (Although I maintain that season one is a masterpiece. Season two doesn't affect that.)
Having said that, I'm going to break the rest of my critique down into sections.
The Noxus Problem:
Before I go further, let me just say: I love the Medardas. Mel in particular is my second favorite character on the show, and I love how messy the Medarda family is. I'm still fascinated by the Black Rose, and I feel that we weren't given an adequate answer as to what, exactly, the beef between them and Ambessa was. I want to know more about that. I'm really hoping that we get another show with Mel at the main character, to further explore what is going on there.
However, I feel bringing in the Noxian army was a huge, huge mistake, because it took focus away from the socio-political conflict between Piltover and Zaunā€”and, in the final episode, abandoned it altogether. After all, there is no time to address that if they're being invaded by a foreign army. There is no need to address it, if you show them working together against a common enemy. Except, there really is; we're given no reason to believe that Piltover's oppression of Zaun will stop. Yes, Sevika was given a seat on the councilā€”but we don't know what that deal entails. Was she promised sovereignty for Zaun? If so, then why is she on Piltover's council? Is it merely that now she can vote for it? If so, I can't see that (or any other pro-Zaun measure) going her way, considering the fact that the two people most likely to support her (Mel and s1!Jayce) are both gone.
I understand that the writers' intention was, "they came together to fight an enemy, everything is good now!" but that is simply not how it works. Now that the battle is over, the most realistic thing to assume is that it went back to the status quo prior to martial law. And the status quo was that life in Zaun was suffering. Despite what the alternate timeline in episode seven tried to suggest (and "alternate timeline" feels too gracious; Zaun did not look like that prior to Hextech, Powder was mentally ill since the first episode's cold openā€”it was an AU on multiple levels), life in Zaun was never good. Characters like Sevika and Silco wanted to fight the enforcers and Piltover rule for a reason. And that reason has never been properly addressed or resolved, and we're given no reason to think that it will be, because they chose to ignore it altogether by making the second season about the Noxus army's invasion rather than letting it actually be about the socio-political struggle between the two sister cities. And for whatever reason that was doneā€”the writers' being scared to commit to either Zaun's independence or Piltover beating them into submission, or the desire to set up the next showā€”I feel that it was a mistake. The Noxian army should have never invaded this show. Instead, Ambessa should have been saved for the Medarda spin-off, with Mel's decision to return to Noxus instead of staying in Piltover built to a different way.
The Vi Problem:
Of all the characters, I think Vi was written the worst and done the dirtiest in the second season.
The problem with Vi's character stems from inconsistency. We're never given convincing reasons for why she thinks the way she does, or why she does the things she does. The second season opens with her having done a complete 180 on her sister, for reasons that we're left to guess at because they aren't explained. Is it because Jinx fired the missile at the council? Is it because Jinx rejected her by saying "here's to the new us?" We don't know, because no time is spent on character work for that. All we know is that Vi went from telling Jinx "it'll be okay" at the end of s1e9 to begging Caitlyn to let her help hunt and kill Jinx in s2e1, even before the attack on the memorial service. Vi went from being unable to bear the thought of being an enforcer because they killed her parents in the beginning of s2e1, to being willing to gas the Lanes with the Gray in s2e2.
And this inconsistency is not relegated only to act 1. In act 2, Vi strangles Jinx so hard in her apartment that Jinx has trouble speaking after Vi finally releases herā€”but later, when they fight in the mines, she doesn't do anything to seriously hurt her and instead just tries to pin her down and get her to surrender. Why is she less murderous toward Jinx now? We're not given a reason. After all, she wanted to kill her in the temple; her brief hesitation when Jinx said "it had to be you" is overruled when she raises her fist to deliver the finishing blow, stopped only by Isha's intervention. And again, her first instinct upon seeing Jinx again was to strangle her hard enough to crush her windpipe. But she flipped again, for reasons we're not privy to, because the character work wasn't done. The closest we get is Vi accepting Jinx after Jinx proved she was right about Vanderā€”but even then, that doesn't make up for the above.
And again, it doesn't end there. In act 3, she's furious with Caitlyn for jailing Jinx, and wants to comfort and help her sister. Yet when Jinx leaves her in the jail cell, suddenly it's "tell me you were right, Caitlyn" and "I was an idiot for trusting her" ā€” this, after Jinx was right about Vander. This, after Jinx saved Caitlyn's life. This, after Jinx told her "don't feel guilty about being happy" and "you deserve to be with [Caitlyn]." She does a 180 again simply because Jinx left? Even though Jinx left telling her that she deserved to be happy? Even though Jinx was probably the one who told Caitlyn where Vi was?
In season one, Vi's actions made sense. Her reasoning was always clear. We knew that she hated the enforcers because they killed her parents, and made life worse for those in Zaun; we knew that her priorities were those closest to her (not Zaun itself, never Zaun itself), and that she would do anything for those she loved. And we knew who she loved, without a doubt, and could see exactly why she loved them.
In season two, this is no longer the case. Vi's motivations and goals flip-flop on a whim. Best I can tell by the end of the season, Vi is willing to agree with whoever is closest to her at any given moment in desperation to keep them there. Jinx abandoned her, but Caitlyn was still there, so Vi agreed to be an enforcer and kill her sister. Then Caitlyn abandoned her and Jinx came back, and while Vi blamed Jinx for Caitlyn's abandonment, she was still willing to take Jinx back if it meant having Vander back, too. But then Jinx left again, and Caitlyn was there, so now Caitlyn Was Right and Jinx shouldn't have been trusted. Perhaps if we had the character work to understand what was actually in Vi's head it would make sense and she would seem like a better written character, but we don't, and so instead it seems that her goals shift depending on what the plot needs. The plot needed her to fight Jinx in an Cool Battle Sequence, so that's what happened. The plot needed her to fuck Caitlyn so the show could have a lesbian sex scene, so that's what happened. No thought was given to her character or her relationships at all, despite her being one of the protagonists. (Jinx is the other, of course.)
Speaking of Vi's relationships, though . . .
The Sisters Problem:
This was supposed to be a show about sisters. What happened to that?
In season one, their relationship was handled beautifully. We saw how close they were in childhood, and the moment they fell apart; and we saw them struggling to work their way back together in late teen (Jinx) / adulthood (Vi), only for Jinx to seemingly sever that at the end. Honestly, that is the one complaint I have about the finale of season one; it has never made sense to me that Vi didn't try to argue with Jinx when Jinx asserted that Vi couldn't love her like she used to, because Vi did love her. Even at that moment, she loved her. But I digress. The point is, in season one, the sisters' relationship continued on a strong through-line. We could see where they were going, and how they were getting there, every step of the way. It was strong, it was consistent.
This is not the case for season two. I already talked about this a lot with Vi above, and Jinx's character was written much more consistently; still, there are problems. For one, in act 3, Jinx is made to ignore Vi's own inconsistency; her line "you're never going to give up on me" makes no sense when Vi had already given up on her once before, in act 1 and the beginning of act 2. The bigger problem, though, is that their relationship was sidelined hard and that, as a result, we once again miss the character work. We got a bit of it in episode six, with their talk about their mother next to the chunk of wall that had once been used to mark their heights. And we know that Vi forgave Jinx the moment that she invited her into the group hug with Vander. But for a show that was supposed to be about them, that is nowhere near enough. Jinx telling Vi, "you know I'm always with you" doesn't feel earned when we didn't get to see them reach that point again. Vi not mourning her sister at all, and instead being fine with being "the dirt under [Caitlyn's nails]" feels extremely dissatisfying when the entire show was supposed to be about the sisters. The most important relationship for Vi and Jinx both was the one they had with each other, and that was completely forgotten.
Speaking of the lesbians, thoughā€”
The Violyn Problem:
Look, I'm a lesbian myself. Obviously I was on-board for Violyn, and I thought they were well-written in season one. The problem is, they weren't well-written in season two.
To be fair, of the two characters, Caitlyn was better written. While she, too, had problems with inconsistency (we're given no reason as to why she's feeling doubt about martial law or why she wanted to betray Ambessa in act 2, for instance), she was still written more consistently than Vi was. Catilyn being willing to abandon her positive belief in Zaun made sense given the life of privilege she was raised in. Caitlyn turning to martial law made sense when you remember that her dream was to be a cop. Even her turns back toward wanting to remove martial law and betray Ambessa could have been written to make sense, had the character work been put in. It wasn't, but Caitlyn still made more sense than Vi overall.
But this section isn't about Caitlyn, it's about her relationship with Vi. And her relationship with Vi was done dirty. Yes, they ended up together. Yes, they had sex. But again, the character work to get them there was not done. In season one, we see their relationship develop; we see how they go from enemies who oppose each other to friends who build trust (and feelings) between them. We see their growing care for each other, we see them work past their preconceived notions and struggles. Their relationship is slowly and steadily built. It makes sense.
In season two? We kind of get that in act 1, but only because we can continue on from knowledge of where they were in the last act of season one. However, season one can no longer carry them after Caitlyn hits Vi in the stomach with the butt of her rifle and then they break up. They should have had a long way to go toward reconciliation after that; the trust between them was shattered, and it takes a long time to build trust back. But they weren't given that time; Vi's easy acceptance of Caitlyn back in her life the moment they reunite aside, we're given absolutely no reason why Caitlynā€”someone who felt horribly betrayed by Vi seemingly choosing Jinx over herā€”is willing to trust Vi and take her back again. Even putting aside her doubts about Ambessa (which were, again, not built up well enough to justify a betrayal from a writing standpoint), and the fact that she was in a relationship with someone else (and there was never any indication that Maddie was a traitor until the literal second that it happened), Caitlyn felt betrayed by Vi. It isn't believable that she's Completely Over It by the time they reunite again, or that those feelings of betrayal wouldn't come back full force when she sees that Vi is partnered up with Jinx, versus Vi's previous assertion that she was only trying to protect Isha when she stopped Caitlyn from shooting.
And it wasn't only Caitlyn who had reasonable grievances! Vi saw Caitlyn change before her eyes, when that was her worst fear; she saw Caitlyn being willing to shoot at a child, knew that Caitlyn had teamed up with Ambessa to put Zaun under martial law, and then had Jinx imprisoned after Jinx saved her life. She did, very briefly, air those grievances with Caitlyn. But then it was all abandoned a few scenes later so that they could have sex in the dungeon. It was completely forgotten for the sake of a fanservice sex scene.
Listen. As I said before, I'm a lesbian. And I'm always happy to see sapphic relationships in shows. I'm even happy to have messy sapphic relationships in shows, because believe it or not, we sapphics are actual human beings, and sometimes that makes us messy. ACAB, and that includes lesbian cops, but bastards make television entertaining. I'm here for that.
But messy shouldn't mean underdeveloped. It shouldn't mean poorly written. And I for one could not enjoy that sex scene when it wasn't properly built up to at all. When Vi and Caitlyn had all of this unresolved, and now ignored, conflict between them. It wasn't even hate sex, or at least, "we're still not good but we're alone and horny" sex. It was "everything is better and they're a couple now" sex. Which is extremely frustrating, and a complete let down over how well their relationship was written in season one. Despite the "league of lesbians" goof tags, the show wasn't about them, but it still should have done them justice, and it didn't. Not by a long shot.
Other Problems:
I don't like that the only character work in the last episode of the show was between Jayce and Viktor. While even that was lacking, taking a show about two sisters and making its series finale about two men puts a bad taste in my mouth. I understand that the bulk of the fandom cares about the men (or at least it seems like it does when I put "jayvik" into my blacklist and half the Arcane tag disappears), but the show should be written for its narrative, not for the fandom. And I, for one, never cared too much about Jayce or Viktor, but after the way this finale sidelined all of the women in order to focus on them? My feelings are pretty negative toward them now.
I don't like that they tried to do a fake-out with Jinx dying, when it's obvious that she didn't. For one, Riot would never kill off their most popular character. For another, there are too many signs that make it obvious that she survived, from the pink streak right before the main explosion, to the glitchy "the end" message over the airship sailing away (one that Powder said she'd ride on one day). It feels as if they wanted to make it look like she died for shock value, and that's something I thought that this show was above doing. It's cheap, it's bad, and I don't like it.
I don't like that Mel and Ekko were both sidelined so much throughout this entire season. Mel spends the bulk of the season in captivity, and then when she is finally free, she doesn't get to do anything to affect change except be in a magic battle against her mother. Jayce completely abandons her without any insight as to why beyond "the Arcane messed him up", and we're given no indication that Mel had anything to do with the reformation of the council at the end. Ekko, meanwhile, was completely absent in act 2, and while he literally saved the day in act 3:
His convincing Jinx not to commit suicide was off-screen;
His rallying of the Firelights was off-screen
He ends up alone in Zaun with absolutely no indication of what he or the Firelights will do afterā€”was the tree even healed at all?
Ekko and the Firelights should have played a much bigger role. The sanctuary that the Firelights had built for the refugees should have had more of a showing other than "the tree is sick" (a plot line which, as I just said, was never resolved). Episode seven was nice, but the Zaun depicted was completely incongruent with what we knew of Zaun's state at the start of the show, and the depiction of Powder is the same. (Because Powder was hallucinating even as a small child, as shown in the cold open of season 1; Vi's death should have sent her spiraling. The fact that she was Totally Mentally Healthy in the alternate timeline makes absolutely no sense. She was Ekko's Ideal Version of Powder, not who she'd realistically be growing up like that.) He wasn't given justice as a character.
And Mel? Again, she spent most of the season in captivity, had her agency completely ripped away from her, lost everyone she ever cared about, has powers that aren't clearly defined or explained, and is now leaving the only home she has known for years to go back to Noxus. And again, I want that story for her, I want that show, but after we saw her brilliant mind in action in season one and how much change she affected, I still feel that she was done dirty this season. I hate how much she was sidelined; she deserved better.
Final Notes:
Despite all this, I do still love Arcane. Well, I love season one, and season two had parts that I liked (I think that arc 2, despite the lack of Ekko, was the best because of the fleeting character work we did get and the focus on the sisters), despite being a disappointment overall. I think for me, I'm going to just take the parts from season two that I did like and put them into an alternate season two that I have in my mind; one where Noxus didn't invade so that the issues between Piltover and Zaun could be focused on and actually resolved, one where the character work wasn't abandoned for flashy action sequences, and one where there wasn't a fakeout of Jinx's death for shock value.
And now that it's all off my chest, that's all I have to say about that.

This Week in BL - Why so much on right now?
Organized, in each category, with ones I'm enjoying most at the top.
NOV 2024 Week 4
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series - Thai
Your Sky (Sun iQIYI) ep 1 of 12 - Classic old school Thai BL. Of course I love it. NaĆÆve sunshine freshman vs strict older protective boy (who already likes him but refuses to show it). Is he grumpy or just gay and tired of all of these women? We donā€™t know. We donā€™t care. We just want to see them fake a relationship. And thatā€™s what weā€™re getting. I love it. I also love the friendship group, and that the younger brother is in it and he has some of the same magic BL-hottie superpowers as his older brother. Itā€™s great.
Love Sick 2024 (Sun iQIYI) ep 10 of 15 - Phun actually turns into dangerous babygirl when he is flirting, who knew? (Dangerous Babygirl is a new archetype I have just invented by the way. Yes, I am pleased with myself.) Noh, who is a nice boy, doesnā€™t stand a chance. Neither does Jeed, since this new babygirl superpower gives Phun a damn near perfect ā€œback off bitchā€ face.
Tumblr media
The arm drape public claiming, it gets me every time. Has done since SOTUS. Nong Mick is hero-level in this version, hands-down my favorite character this time around (and a non-entity last time). I love him so much I canā€™t stand it. I havenā€™t updated my 1:1 comparison yet this week, didnā€™t have time to rewatch 2014, but I will later tonight.Ā Ā I'm chronicling my experience with 2024 as compared to 2014 here.Ā
Tumblr media
Kidnap (Fri Gaga) ep 12 end - What an absolutely excellent final episode. Smiley kisses!Ā
ConclusionĀ
A cute if patently absurd little show about a stuntman who is somehow convinced to kidnap a rich kid except they fall in love. It takes itself a little more seriously than it deserves for such a silly plot and some crappy stunts and contradictory content, but it was a pleasantly romantic experience all around, and I enjoyed myself. Extra credit for Q in that perfect blue color throughout. No complaints, a solid BL. 8/10Ā
Tumblr media
The Heart Killers (Weds Gaga) ep 1 of 12 - Jojo directs FirstKhao & JoongDunk in an action romcom about assassin brothers (Khao & Joong) who meet a tattoo artist (First) and a cocky mechanic (Dunk). I'm highly amused that Joong plays the older brother to Khao and that we have a take on the Taming of the ShrewBL. This has all GMMTV's best chemistry in one BL and some fresh concepts that I've only seen tackled in m/m romance novels (check out Amy Lane's Racing for the Sun, thank me later). My only quibble is Jojo, I like his style but his characters can get unreliably messy soā€¦... this gonna be interesting.
Buckle up buttercups I got thoughts:
Frankly, I havenā€™t decided if this is good or so bad and so camp that itā€™s good? The latter I suspect. Either way, Iā€™m enjoying it very much, but I had very little doubt that I would. This falls into so many of my wheelhouses. Not just the premise but the casting and the approach and the script. They pretty much knocked it out of the park with the first episode: one night stand + safe sex + linguistic negotiation = Iā€™m in! During the opening sequence I spent the entire time worried about how many fingerprints Bison was leaving everywhere. And then I realized this show is going to require DEMAND we turn our brains entirely off.
We are in KinnPorshce / The Sign territory people. Take emergency precautions! Do not engage brain meats!
Kiss Me Kate only gay and hitmen? Frankly, it sells itself. The music is extremely stupid though. (Brain, stop it!) I gotta say that FirstKhao are good becauseā€¦ā€¦ FirstKhao. But JoongDunk are absolutely perfectly cast. Like: couldnā€™t be a better pair in these roles. Dunk, in particular, is slaying. I did not have Dunk as Petruchio down on my ā€œbest casting choice of all timeā€ BL bingo card, but apparently there he is. Awesome.Ā
Tumblr media
Fourever You (Thurs YT) ep 8 of 16 - Iā€™m warming up to the second couple a little bit. I actually donā€™t mind a bully romance the way some do. But this isnā€™t quite hitting the notes that I want from one. Still, I found this week more engaging than last week.Ā
Secret Love (? YT?) 1-12 of 81 eps - They dropped 12 eps at once randomly on YT totaling about 20 min. So of course, I watched it. Because I have no self-control and STEPBROTHERS! Adopted into a rich family, boy falls in love with heir. But when he is made the heir instead, everything goes wrong. Now enemies the two boys reunite and sparks! I hate this format but dammit I love this utter dross. Itā€™s very early Chinese BL feeling but from Thailand. I donā€™t care. Itā€™s so stupidly great. This is my kind of BL.
Tumblr media
Caged Again (Fri Gaga) ep 3 of 10 - There is something sweetly innocent and earnest about this show. It reminds me of Takara and Amagi or even Light On Me but less stiff - this one is quintessentially quirky and casually Thai about it. Itā€™s interesting that this has an 18+ rating, which means itā€™s either gonna go very violent or sexy or both. Right now I canā€™t imagine that, it doesnā€™t suit. But Iā€™m looking forward to seeing where this goes. Junior with his Mean Girl crop top moment is the goddess of the week though. Fierce queen penguin.
Tumblr media
Perfect 10 Liners (Sun YT?) ep 4 of 24 - I love the side couple so damn much. How are they so adorable? Still not wild about the mains, and not likely to get there anytime soon. That said, I did like seeing the ā€œsleeping in your boyfriendā€˜s class while he gives you his jacketā€ trope drop. We havenā€™t had that one for a really long time. My Engineer maybe?
Every You Every Me (Mon Gaga) ep 7 of 8 - I did find this installment kind of boring. I just donā€™t like actors as main characters. Much as Iā€™m enjoying this show and I think the actors are doing a good job, I really do wish it was more like what we had been sold on: Connected reborn characters fated to be together over and over again. Not this weird little mishmash of whatever. Iā€™m now annoyed by a format I was initially charmed by.Ā
Jack & Joker (Mon IQIYI) ep 10-11 of 12 - still on hold until it ends or I can cope with the pain. Ā I just canā€™t go into darkness right now.
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series - Not Thai
Our Youth AKA Miseinen: Mijukuna Oretachi wa Bukiyo ni Shinkochu (Japan Tues Gaga) ep 3 of 11 - SNIFF TEST! But done by Japan so itā€™s that much better and more kinky. The way H looks at M pretty much defines naked lust. ā€œI got extra beat up so youā€™d take pity on me and then I admitted it to youā€ is so damn warped I canā€™t even with this boy. This feral kid is gonna drive me feral. The power and the control and the execution of this show is just spectacular. I keep thinking about it after its done and telling people IRL about it. (I rarely talk BL IRL.) Itā€™s classy. I do love it when Japan does classy BL for us.Ā
See Your Love (Taiwan Weds Gaga) ep 6 of 13 - so completely and utterly adorable. The learning sign language thing! I loved it so much.
Love is Like a Poison AKA Doku Koi: Doku mo Sugireba Koi to Naru (Japan Tues Netflix?) 10 of 12 eps - Possibly one of the best confessions of the year I have to say. Also a wonderful character growth arc for our lawyer. Exactly as one might hope. The plot twist was slightly predictable but still adds a delicious note of tension to our final episodes.
Blue Canvas of Youthful Days (China Sun iQIYI) eps 7-8 of 12 - You donā€™t want me but you wonā€™t let anybody else have me either. The song of the repressed seme. I did like the irrational jealousy moment and a few other bits, of course the crying kiss. You know I love a crying kiss. Even if itā€™s a somewhat censored one. But this is also leaning a little bit darker than I want at the moment. This being China, I anticipate the darkness and doom getting worse not better.

Teenager Judge (Vietnam Sat YT) ep 9 of ? - The incredible migrating lip injury continues. Could we please get on with the BL aspect of this show? Iā€™m getting frustrated as well as slightly bored at this juncture. Pacing darlings. Pacing.
Love in the Air: Koi no Yokan (Japan Sat Gaga) ep 4 of 10 - Still not sure. I think I like this better than the original, but Iā€™m confused. I did make disgusted scoff noises and say ā€œoh dearā€ a couple of times. Which makes me sound like a World War II grandpa (only the housemate's cat noticed), but is also classic me when profoundly disappointed by a piece of media. Thatā€™s said, the sex scene was pretty good. In the end, I wasnā€™t as frustrated by this version of these characters, but they didnā€™t have as many highs or lows as the original. So first half probably works out about the same in my all-purpose rating system. The true proof in the pudding is going to be couple number 2 tho......
It's airing but......
Winter Is Not The Death of Summer (Weds YT) ?? eps - Criminals who meet in prison fall in love. I did find it on YouTube, but I did not find any English subs for it. The first episode seems to be only six minutes long. It is very pulp. But it is intriguing. So I hope it gets some sort of international or something at some point. for now Iā€™ll put it to the wayside.
Bad Guy My Boss (Thai Sun Gaga) 10 eps - I DNF'd at ep 7, I couldn't make it. I am weak. Life is hard enough right now, this show is making it harder. Itā€™s not what I want from my entertainment.
Bad to Bed (Taiwan Sat YT) 10 eps - This is a little too low production value even for me + just very very odd. DNF

In Case You Missed it
Love for Loves Sake got some kind of special on 11/9. Not sure what, why, or where. Only the rumor that it...... is. I'll believe it when I see it...... literally. Let me know if you found it.
The Bangkok Podcast covered Marriage Equality in Thailand: More Complex Than it Seems. They missed some of the point and all of the queer perspective. But it's a local lawyer talking about it and how it was implemented, which is quite interesting.

Dominant Yakuza and Wimpy Corporate Slave AKA Ore-sama Yakuza to Hetare Shachiku: Kuni wo Koeta Jingi Naki Dekiai, Japan YT. A 30 min slice of ridiculousness. This mini walked out the back of one of my 1999 yaoi (you know those little shorts they always had along with the main story?) and randomly got cut together by some helpful malcontent, tumbled into my YT feed like a Taiwanese prat fall, and I couldn't be happier.
This is the Cliff's notes of a story that could have been amazing, but I adored it anyway. Basically what it says on the tin: office cutie from Taiwan working in Japan runs across hot AF mafia hit man beating up lesser thugs. Falls instantly in love, turns out so does the yakuza. They end up together for...... reasons? (one is cute and the other is cool?) That's it. It's dumb and I loved it. 7/10 because it really isn't good, but it lives on in a very warped corner of my shriveled old heart.
Next Week Looks Like This:

Still to come:
11/28 Spare Me Your Mercy (Thai Thurs iQIYI) 8 eps on OneD (no word on inter) - Increased rates of deaths in terminal patients has a police captain investigating the palliative care doctor with whom he's fallen in love. Their relationship deepens but the mystery persists, driven by mistrust. Adapted from the novel "Euthanasia" by Sammon (Triage, Manner of Death) stars some old guard BL actors: Tor Thanapob from Hormones as the doctor and (fuck me YES) Jaylerr from Great Men Academy and goddamn Grean Fictions as the captain!
Upcoming BLs for 2024 are listed here. This list is not kept updated, so please leave a comment if you know something new or RP with additions.

Aromantically rotating this quote from Jon "The Silt Verses" Ware from the Season 2 Q&A (bold emphasis mine)
Question: I love what Paige and Hayward have going on. How would you describe their dynamic? ā€‹ JON: I saw someone online talk about the, ā€œthe paladin and the prophet.ā€ Which I think is a really nice way of looking at it! Whereas I saw them as two people whoā€¦both of them have come to the end of the road in their old lives. [...] I think maybe thereā€™s also an implicit question there about whether thereā€™s something romantic going on ā€“ maybe Iā€™m reading into it, but that is something thatā€™s on my mind a lot, so Iā€™d love to talk about it more. ā€‹ Because shipping is fantastic and itā€™s wonderful and itā€™s cool, but as a writer whoā€™s way too online in a parasocial world, Iā€™m really wary of how I respond to it and how I process it. ā€‹ I personally, I donā€™t like writing fictional characters where the most important moment in their narrative arcs is when they get together with the person they were always meant to get together with. Generally, itā€™s just a bugbear of mine in fiction and Iā€™m not sure I agree with the underlying message. ā€‹ But I think if any writer whoā€™s way too online sees, hey, people are getting excited about these two characters hooking up and falling in love and they keep coming back to this idea of them hooking up and falling in love, thereā€™s a real rodent voice in the back of your head whispers,Ā "give the people what they want. Get those likes, get that fanart." ā€‹ Which is the wrong response! Because we donā€™t understand that maybe people are just having fun exploring these characters or their own interpretations of these characters, we think they must be anticipating a pay-off from us. ā€‹ And again, I think it can send you in the wrong direction, one that ends up being essentially flattening ā€“ we donā€™t think,Ā "if these characters hook up, OK, what new opportunities does that give us to explore them, to understand them in greater depth?" Instead we think we need to perform a climactic moment of love and comfort and happiness to get the audienceā€™s approval. Which can be very much to the detriment of the complexity of the characters, but also, afterwards, where do you go with it? ā€‹ And after we released maybe one episode of The Silt Verses, I saw a couple of folks online goingĀ ā€˜oh, god, I hope this isnā€™t going to end with Carpenter and Faulkner hooking up,ā€™. And you go,Ā "oh my god, I hadnā€™t considered that as a possibility for a second, thatā€™s not who they are and thatā€™s not what the relationship is here"Ā - but of course all of us are primed for it, that enemies-to-lovers thread that is so common. ā€‹ [...] ā€‹ So it felt like I could introduce a connection there [with Paige and Hayward] and we could see a different way that they begin to be around each other that hopefully feels like itā€™s adding new dimensions to both of the characters without me looking over my shoulder going,Ā ā€œAm I in danger of turning this into something a bit stock by turning it into quite a straightforward romantic situation?ā€
