The Kdrama Hell is other people/ Strangers from hell in my opinion is the best use of psychological horror.

Jongwoo is an incredibly unreliable narrator through the entire ten episodes of the show.

We can only see the show through his eyes, and he is constantly showing the audience an untrue state of events: I.e. the last episode. Episode 10.

He is showing the state of events in a contradictory way to induce self pity/make the audience pity him. Reducing himself to a victim

He has countlessly changed/confused the timeline of events; in an early episode Yoo Gi-hyeok steps out and says the same sentence Seo Moonjo says episodes later, doing the same action by stepping out into the hall once the gangster/Jongwoo gets too confrontational.

The show constantly tells two different versions of events. Jongwoo’s version. And the one we do not see, yet only in small cases such as episode 10 where we are shown the “true” events of what happened in Eden.

But it had happened further in the series.

When Jongwoo had gotten drunk, lashing out at everyone and was seemingly surprised when he and us as the watcher seen what had actually went down the night before.

Even 3 years after watching this show it still has its grip on me. It’s incredibly mind fucking every episode.

What I’m so interested in about this show is how much of it was true events, and how much of it was garnered from the novel that Jongwoo had started writing since he arrived at Eden.

I often jump between it was all purely fiction and Jongwoo was so driven by incredible amounts of paranoia while living there with albeit “odd” roommates that had drove him to murder everyone in Eden residence.

What if he was the only one who had murdered everyone? That the other residents were innocent, even if a little odd.

In his flashbacks to his time in the military, he’s seen beating people up, nearly to death in some cases. Being dragged away. Maybe he was already just wired to be a bad person, who did end up murdering everyone, before writing it off as being pushed over the edge, and blaming everyone else in the residence for provoking him because they were “trying to kill him.” Ultimately painting himself as the good guy.

The episodes are usually always filled with two separate versions of events. Like the when the gangster was attacked in his bed, until he wasn’t. He went unstairs to check out a noise, and that’s when he is attacked. Whether the first attack was a dream from the gangster character or part of the novel that had been scrapped is unclear.

But throughout the show, the timeline is unreliable and so is every single characters personality—especially Moonjo and Jongwoo.

The episodes often end with some creepy moments. Whether a creepy sentence coming from Moonjo or him making sinister faces, the next episodes always start up at the same scene, showing a different version of events. A different interaction.

To continue on that thought—throughout the series it is seen to show Jongwoo writing before cutting to one of the residents, acting suspicious in a way. Or constant transitions between some resident acting out violence to Jongwoo in some lighter, less gruely act. Usually at work or in his room. It shows contrast between what he is writing in his novel, and the real world in which he lives.

Or…

If they were all indeed cannibal serial murderers that had lay low in their murders for their entirety of living at Eden, until Moonjo had met Jongwoo.

So infatuated with making yet another one of them/him at Eden. Seeing the disgust or rage or natural human reaction to chew one another up and spit them out—seeing another version of himself in Jongwoo.

That one line in the dentist office when Moonjo was stitching up Jongwoo’s mouth still sticks with me LITERALLY EVERY SECOND I LIVE AND BREATHE.

Jongwoo: “what are you?”

Moonjo: “what do you think I am, babe? A dentist who lives at a residence? Or a serial killer you’d find in a crime novel?” “Well, it doesn’t matter.”

“I can be anything you want.”

Can we think on how insane that is for a moment?

what if Moonjo had snuck into Jongwoo’s room one day while he was at work and read his novel. Re-enacting parts of the half written novel and placing it into the real world to make this “masterpiece”, as he so graciously puts it. Becoming what he thought Jongwoo would have wanted, what he thought Jongwoo would have found the most interesting. Constantly putting Jongwoo in the center of it all. It was as though some switch was flipped and Moonjo’s goal was now Jongwoo. Hi world somehow revolving around him.

the reason that rusty hears the voice of momma/poppa when he hears the starlight express is because he’s projecting the voice and image of the person who kept telling him to believe in himself, the person who thought he could be a champion from the start, the person who probably taught him about the midnight train onto the very being.

so when the starlight express tells him the same things that momma/poppa told him, he hears it in their voice. he understands now that everything they’ve been telling him is true, that if he believes in himself he can achieve his dream. he sees his parent and mentor in god itself.

Thinking about how Jimmy was thinking so much and not noticing what was right in front of him until it broke and cut his hand open. How he accepted help from Rowan despite knowing how much it hurts him too and neither of them even CONSIDER to ask Lister for help.

Thinking about Rowan building a wall between him and his fans until one of them hit him with a brick (“like one you would use to build a garden wall”) yet he STILL chooses to continue the show because the music is the only thing the fans haven’t taken away from him (aka; still internally building the wall.)

Thinking about Lister taking Jimmy’s knife because he wanted to protect Jimmy from himself (also he probably wasn’t ready to leave Kent and needed an excuse to stay that wouldn’t draw attention to himself) (social anxiety much???) How he never asks anyone for help and at parties ends up leaving them to drink alone. (???) This time this bad habit lead to him accidentally STAPPING HIMSELF and ALMOST DYING!!!

Really loving the different approaches they're taking to the character perspectives every episode. The tweeting was excellent, and it suits Nick's character best given his situation.

I was a bit worried before that Nick would pine after Boston, but it wouldn't be the most believable. I've come away from this episode understanding how Nick could feel so betrayed by Boston though, despite already knowing Boston's reputation. Boston does a remarkable job of being sweet to Nick and course correcting anytime he says anything that upsets him. It helps that Nick seems relatively easy to manipulate given that he is such an open book--seriously, he cannot hide his feelings in the slightest.

Side note, but Boston's attitude towards Nick strikes me as outright manipulation, while Ray's attitude towards Sand is just genuine infatuation. Boston wants to take any steps necessary to make Nick stay, doing just enough to appease him. I think Ray's behavior could be read as manipulation (re: the puppy eyes), but that would imply that he's making the intentional decision to portray himself in ways that will pull Sand in, regardless of how deep his feelings really are.

My love(obsession) for Sleep Token's music has evolved into my OC's. Like Vore??? It basically built my first concept of Gulag(FO4 oc).

From my understanding and ingesting of the song, it's a whole metaphor, obviously not actually referring to the fetish, but as a strange yet still intimate affection. It reminds me of the movie Bones And All and the cannibalism as a metaphor for love poems. Gulag is most literally a cannibal because he's a ghoul, he's eaten people, torn them apart, and carved into them. But with Judith, he'd still eat her in both the metaphorical way and the literal way.

Judith, in the beginning of her story, is weak, like an animal of prey, pathetic, and only has her intelligence to help her. One of their first interactions was him contemplating if he should kill her.

But due to his amnesia of the sorts, all he knows how to do is consume: consume people, consume help, everything is food. Then, enter Judith, he still wants to kill her, to eat her, but in the softest way, if that checks out. He confuses romantic/platonic love as hunger, and that WILL be their end because once he undstands it, there will be absolutely nothing left of either of them.

Do you guys want to hear another weird thing I do?

I do this thing where I have a set of words and I write them out in the air with my finger and mouth them. It's really weird bcuz it's things like "Cool" "Sure" "You're welcome" and others that I can't remember from the top of my head. But I do this and repeat this word for like 3 minutes and I don't know why I do them. I tried to stop but it just felt really weird whenever I didn't/refused to do them so I just live with it now

ok also you know how people say one of the ig things that happens the older they get is they stop giving a fuck? well i feel like that’s so true and that’s why the show needs to go back to casting more older people! like some of the most iconic and dramatic (in a good fun way) people have been older players and the show has been severely missing that energy when they cast all people in their 20s and like 1 in their early 30’s half who are trying to be influencers and half who are still learning how to be ok with not people pleasing you know?

What is your definition of canon? I saw a few on the list who canonically have feelings for each other but are never in a relationship

honestly i'm willing to hear cases being plead for those (and if you submitted something like that and I took it out before posting the list you can appeal i'll hear it out, i think there might have been one or two the descriptions made it sound like they aren't canon but I wasn't familiar so feel free to correct me) since I just let Oliver and James slide

by specifying canon I was more trying to avoid stuff like: I got a sam/frodo submission which is funny because I know they aren't even if they should be but uh less ideal to get things like that when I don't know the source material and i'm sifting through over 200 submissions by myself. was also trying to avoid word of god style canon which i got at least two of and removed because a lot of people are using this blog as a book rec space and putting it in because the author said but didn't actually put it in the book seems a little misleading

if there is explicit romantic or sexual intent between both/all parties involved i think I'll generally let them in so like a canonically queer relationship between them not really up for interpretation. Like someone submitted Crowley/Aziraphale who i ship and think can easily be interpreted as a couple. But they are not explicitly stated to see each other in such a way so they do not count. Vs like Neil and Andrew never define their relationship but there is no way around the fact that they have one (despite Andrew saying this is nothing lol) because while they don't say boyfriends they do explicitly show in text romantic and sexual intent towards each other.

Basically text over subtext is primarily what i'm aiming for when i say canon if you don't wanna read all of that.
