Hi, how did you learn to draw Steve's physique?

Ohh what a complicated thing to answer...

When it comes to how I learned to draw anything, it's hard to say anything too specific since it's always a culmination of many years of assorted study and practice... but I can try to do my best to explain some of the biggest things that helped me learn, some tips I keep in mind, and maybe at least some places to start/delve further.

(just a little disclaimer it's not like my drawings here are going to be 100% medically accurate.. they're just to illustrate concepts!)

The main thing about learning various physiques is understanding anatomy. Which feels obvious, but I don't mean proportions; these are important, but perhaps more important is understanding the skeleton and how it moves and learning where muscles connect to bones and where fat grows on the body. When you understand how these function on a more mechanical level, depicting form and movement in a way that feels natural comes in tow.

For instance, understanding things like the pronation and supination of the radius and ulna, as well as the fact that muscles can ONLY contract or relax, will help you understand a bit better which muscles will be flexed and which will not while someone moves. It's inherent to the positioning based on the structural makeup of the body... It's not like you NEED to memorize all the muscles and bones, of course, but understanding and gaining at least a passive familiarity with the concepts really helps.

In tandem with this concept is the way parts of the body flow into eachother. Muscles ALWAYS come in groups because they can only contract. Whatever muscle is there to lift something, there is a muscle on the other side to pull that bone back down. What this results in is a series of straight edges next to curves, which gives us a lot of really lovely "s curves" and dents and folds and so on and so forth just naturally occurring.

I would suggest at least learning the "bony landmarks", which are bones (usually) visible on the surface of the body. things like the iliac crest, the great trochanter, the 7th vertabrae, the acromion process... These can be used to help you understand the parts of the body as angles and relationships, rather than trying to remember lengths and sizes, which vary immensely... (since you asked about steve, he can be our model... also study these on your own don't just take my word for it haha, these are the ones I personally keep in mind)

I've done the same thing with body hair... learning where it grows and in which directions... It helps me make up variations without needing reference, because I have a set of rules I can follow.

The biggest thing that helped me understand all this on a much deeper level was my ecorche course. I sculpted this guy. We started by sculpting the entire skeleton to understand the bones, and then we added muscles on top. Not every single muscle, of course, but the "artistic muscles" AKA the ones which directly affect the surface of the body. Doing this let us see where muscles connect, because we would make a shape, put it on the bone where it actually goes, and then you get to see how other muscles overlap that.

This helped me, perhaps, more than anything else. But I also didn't just start with this course, I had been drawing for years before I even took it. I had been in school for years before I took it. Not that I think it wouldn't be helpful to someone just starting out, but I do think that the more you know going in, the better an in-depth course like this will help you and stick with you. Classes are also expensive, though so I'm not really like... recommending you pay potentially thousands of dollars to take one... But it did help me a lot, personally.

I also, of course, have done many figure, gesture, and master studies...

These just help you quickly gain a stronger understanding of generalized anatomy, and gives you real life examples of and practice with of how people move and balance.

What all this does when combined, is gives me a very solid ability to depict movement and form in a way that feels relatively natural from my subconscious without the need for reference.

The rest of how I've learned to draw his physique is honestly mostly just stylization. I understand the body, and this is how I am depicting it for his level of musculature.

And as I move into depicting him in other ways, either moving in comics or in animation, realistically rendered, or extra stylized, these concepts inform every step of that process for me! When he keeps the same/similar relationships between parts, he gets to still look like himself.

It ALSO really helps when putting clothes on, because the way cloth falls and bunches and lifts is all directly related to the form it is on... So the more you understand that form, the more you can depict clothing and movement in a way that feels natural.

This is all, of course, true when I draw anyone, you asked about Steve so I'm trying to mostly show with him! But because I'm just drawing from raw information of general anatomy rather than trying to study one body type at a time, it allows a lot more "give," I think!

But, it also makes monster and alien design much easier! It's a lot easier to come up with non-human anatomy when I understand human anatomy, because I can manipulate the knowledge I have...

There is infinite more to study in the world of anatomy... The complexity of the human body goes extremely deep. For our purposes as artists, we need only depict a fraction of it, but more information rarely hurts the process.

I'm sure there's something in here that's wrong on a technical level, I'm mostly going off of memory. But that's kind of my point - I understand enough generally and conceptually that when I am missing something and need to find reference for it, I understand what I'm looking at. It's much easier than trying to learn AND draw at the same time.

"The family junk box."

Diorama still life oil painting for school worked on and off over the last month or so, finished it last week but only just took pics of it today

This was actually the first time I used oil paint! (though i ended up posting the second still life painting first, that one only took like two painting sessions lol). Really proud of how this came out, excited to do more with oil paint :)

Art thoughts and wips below the cut!

When thinking of what to make, I thought of using some of the junk I've accumulated in my hallway closet. When trying to think of what to pair it with I first thought of the ocean, but then I thought about Ultrakill and was like "hell yeah blood and junk" lmao

More serious ideas then took form as I arranged the materials. I was reminded of the ever present junk in my family's home; old batteries, tangled wires, dead lightbulbs, and such (the alcohol bottles were just for fun lol). I guess themes of abandonment and indecisiveness.

My family has since moved from that house and has split up in our separate ways. We're happier now on the whole, but I sometimes can't help thinking about what we left behind, even the basement junk boxes.

HELLO im thinking about your saiki k / spyxfamily au...... im so fascinated by this family dynamic. does kuriko still have all her powers, or just telepathy? in your comic it looks like she still does the telepathic communication which i LOVE. pairs well with anyas constant yapping...... also, if kuriko does have all her powers, how powerful is she? id imagine she'd be about at the level of 16-year-old saiki with limiters, since in the time travel episode he was a bit older and a bit stronger (but he also didnt have glasses so i guess he didnt have the power to turn people to stone yet? i wonder if there are other powers he unlocks later. its probably in the manga but im only halfway through 😭). man, just imagine the shenanigans those kids would get up to..... even just putting kuriko in anyas place would be hilarious, but then also throwing anya AND kuusuke into the mix???? these kids are gonna accidentally destroy the world lmfao

but im also fascinated by the dynamic of. anya and kuriko being siblings and knowing about each others powers, but no one else knows about them (except probably kuusuke?). cause like. kusuo originally can use his powers at home, so now he can use them less freely, but anya originally had NO ONE who knew about them and now she has 2 siblings who do, so she can use them more freely. which would probably result in an even more reserved kuriko and an even more outgoing anya. plus kuusukes inferiority complex would be doubled..... loid has no idea what he just got himself into lmao. just absolutely insane family dynamics all around im obsessed

1. still have all her powers, and

2. they would be weaker than in canon since she got her limiters early���️

this obv includes the fact that she can remember all her time as an infant, so thinking of that (considering the vague experiments anya went thru in canon) i deffo think ur right about her being even more reserved ( ´,_ゝ`) </3 tho tbf anya being kuriko's voice and seeming (from an outside perspective) to always just KNOW what she wants, no matter how specific, sounds really freaking cute ( T∀T)

i imagine her other powers coming up in little scenes (+ prob main plot stuff but im not writing allat for a thought experiment lol)⬇️⬇️

overall, i think the family dynamic would be like this⬇️⬇️⬇️

kusuke wouldnt be threatened by anya cause all she can do is read minds, shes no genius on top of that. his relationship with kuriko tho, i feel like would be similar to how it was in canon, except that since kuriko is more fragile here, id imagine that she'd be less willing to indulge kusuke's games- leading him to harbour more genuine resentment, in turn leading her to kinda fear him. it'd make their dynamic more angsty than the og, but tbh i feel that that lends well to the new setting/kusukes new role.

i dont think kuriko would mind loid or yor, but since she can remember their bio parents (kuniharu & kurumi) better than anya, i dont think she'd be able to accept them as her parents right away, especially yor.

the only other thing i wanted to mention was:

how did kusuke get into eden without parents, you ask? (you didnt but--) YOU ASK?? well obvi its cause he's a super genius and probably achieved something so crazy that the schoolboard REALLY wanted him as an alum, so he completely skipped over the regular admission process. he would live in the dorms and probably avoided talking abt his parents entirely (cause who would share their personal trauma with ants??), leaving a very convenient spot for loid to slip into lol

One time I was doing a roleplay with this person using my Latina oc (she’s my pride and joy. i love her so much. she’s actually my daughter) and we were doing double ups.

Their opening to the roleplay was Henry trying to stab my OC and calling her a 🫘-er.

Improbable headcanon (mostly because I'm unsure if he'd have the right tools); Peter got tired of nearly hitting walls and relying on his spidersense to guide him with his poor vision, and one day impulsively managed to scavenge his glasses' lenses to be refit into the goggles. He sees better as Noir and worse as himself. The daylight world is blurry now. He's leaving himself behind.

Is it a viable way of life? not really. but do i love it narratively.... why yes i do. "hes leaving himself behind" ough. i love the abandonment of self,, yes the spider god changed him, but that was against his own will. Here he's choosing to render himself blind in the daylight, choosing to lean into the spider that was cast upon him, all on his own.

the reason this took so long for me to answer was because i was also trying to figure out the probability (since you mentioned it). unluckily for me, finding info on how prescription glasses lenses are manufactured is more difficult than I thought, even for TODAY. So bear in mind that what I'm gonna talk about is current day tools, and not from the 1930s lol.

Closest thing ive got to an answer is that he can refit the lenses. Thank god Pete wears like jugunda glasses because he would be out of luck if they were too small to fit the frames of his goggles.

The most likely thing he could do would be hand edging his lenses, which is a fancy way of saying he'd sand them down to fit the shape he needs. You're definitely not supposed to do this LOL but pete's in a tight spot so I'll give him that. For the life of me i can't even find when glasses started accounting for PD (pupillary distance) and OC (ocular center), but if they did that in the 1930s, pete's glasses r definitely not working at 100%. So if ur into a little sadness there you go: he goes through all this trouble to see at night and his glasses don't even work as well as they used to. the parker fortune.

If his lenses were too small (and if the goggle lenses were thick enough) he could try and grind some curvature into them to match his current lenses. This is even more makeshift then the last option, but The Spider Man is nothing but makeshift parts, so it kinda fits. This method would be a ton of trial and error + it wouldn't account for any astigmatisms. But at least he'd get to keep his daytime lenses?

id say his best bet is befriending an optician or something
