Since I posted my other RotR last week I figured I’d add the other fanart I did for the series. I’d hoped to draw the entire cast, but instead all you get all a couple portrait sketches. Don’t ask me why I drew Ethel so much I don’t know, I think I just wanted to draw someone with a Big Side Braid.

Prophetic DnD Game please!
Things got out of order in my drafts folder but I haven't lost the asks yet. Here's the next big of The Prophetic D&D Game:
So they got started. Everyone picked the same characters. Gareth asked if he could play both Maya and Joe, but Eddie refused. He didn’t want to see what Gareth would do with Mike’s character in his absence. This meant that Eddie had to play him, though, because he also wasn’t going to put up with any of the guys making a crack about shoving the character in the closet. So when Grant and Gareth had their character come up with a plan to infiltrate the insane asylum and talk to Sir Englund about the last set of murders, he proposed that Joe go with them.
“Eh, no,” Grant said flatly.
Eddie boggled at him. “And why not? Joe’s got the charisma you need for a caper like this. He would be useful.”
Gareth snickered. “Yeah, I’m sure he’s very charming,” he said. “We need stealth, and he’s a big dumb paladin. Let the illusionist handle it.” He waved his hand gracefully at himself. “Besides, Natalia’s got brains and charm. I think we can deal with this without Joe.”

Daphne Bedlam Corinthia
Age: 24
Race: Zariel Tiefling
Class: Archfey warlock/fighter/paladin
Gender: cis woman
Sexuality: questioning
To a noble tiefling family of Baldur’s Gate, two daughters were born. Roslyn Reverie was the eldest, kind and loving to all, one who would give charity to just about anyone. She nee how to act in society, and generally, she was loved by all. Daphne Bedlam, true to her name, was a little bit more of a wild one. She was charming, but she had her own agenda most of the time, getting into capers with other noble children and usually getting out of trouble with her growing charisma.
As a young teen, Daphne met at tall, stately woman while her family was traveling in the country. Dressed in the colors of autumn, the woman seemed interested in the young girl, and asked her questions about herself. Daphne knew a few things about magic at this point, and she knew likely that this woman was fey. She approached the conversation carefully, answering the questions, but giving no full answer to any of it, at least not in a way where the woman could use it against her. Impressed by the girl’s cunning atop her ability to speak well, she named herself the girl’s godmother. Centeri of the Autumn Court blessed the young girl with warlock powers that grew as she aged, both allowing her to fight and avoid fighting when need be.
Still, she presented herself at court with her family, growing into a fine young woman. While her parents hoped for Roslyn to marry the son of the Archduke Ravegaurd— unawares of how complicated that political maneuver would be —they looked for other nobles for Daphne, alright with the supposed faux pas of marrying off their younger daughter first. With some interest around, the family eventually decided that they’d accept the proposal of the up and coming Lord Enver Gortash. Of course, like everyone, they didn’t know he was the chosen of Bane. Centeri, however, was feeling unsure about letting her mortal protege get married so quickly. She told the girl to go for a long engagement, saying that her patron had a long and arduous quest for her that only a maiden could complete. Her family and betrothed agreed.
Daphne often writes letters to her betrothed, telling him of her journeys and how she gets ever closer to her quest goal. As far as she knows, while quite a few years her senior, he is a good man and genius inventor. He had no idea of any other motivations he could have in marrying her. She has no idea he, by proxy, has a hand in her abduction and subsequent infection with a mindflayer tadpole.

Very Short Stories Week 30
VSSmagic provided the 3/11 prompt
Invisible (3/11)
"When I move, I am all but invisible. My enemy never sees me coming." The elf said smugly Bruza shook his head. "Where's the fun in that? I wanna see the bugger's fear!" The orc said. "And besides, that sneaky shite? Seems you're afraid of a proper scrap to me."
Flirtation (4/11)
After all the flirtation and playful messages, they now felt somehow awkward meeting for the first time. They worried they were a disappointment in the flesh, and hoped not to tarnish the relationship they'd built before their meeting.
Caper (5/11)
"I hate the terms you lot use." Lee said. "A 'caper' like it was some jolly adventure. And not beating a guard to death." "You're just mad I got away. You can't touch me, no extradition! You're not a cop here." "Think that's good for you?" Lee said icily, drawing a gun.
6th and 7th are from VSSMagic too.
Galaxy (6/11)
He'd crossed the galaxy in his quest for vengeance. Now, wounded and broken, he slumped onto the throne. The cheers of his men and triumphant horns echoed as, for the first time, he felt peace in the gathering darkness.
Shine (7/11)
Rainer scoffed at the paladin polishing his armour. "Wasting time, pal." "He's a knight!" Ossy said. The man gestured at the veteran to go on. "Making it shine all nice, just gonna end up filthy tomorrow." "Habit. And wanna look my best if I meet the Great Mother"
Longing (8/11)
Pete felt a longing to go home to Earth. No...the Other did. Hungered for more souls to torment and destroy. Pete was in charge again, but for how long? He acted fast. Destroyed the beacon, dumped the fuel. He doomed himself. But at least everyone else would be safe
Ophidian (9/11)
The ophidian eyes fixed on Rhod. Lobbing a rock at the giant serpent had seemed a good idea at the time. "Ratfolk!" It hissed. "Don't you usually run away, vermin?" "It look like I'm running, ya limbless prick?" The beast lunged. Rhod swung the blunderbuss up and fired.

Rue's 2021 Writing Year in Review
I've done this in past years and I hated to not continue it. Below the cut are my stats and fics posted in the year 2021!
Fics posted: 22
Fics Updated: 1
Voltron: Legendary Defender: 7
Carmen Sandiego (2019): 16
Word Count: 124,777
Voltron: Legendary Defender Fics:
Not So New: (Plance) A post canon New Years Eve plance fic.
After Hours: (Plance) A married plance fluffy Christmas fic (with special appearance from their OC child)
A Bird in the Hand: (Gen) Written for the Pidge Angst Bang 2021! Pidge is captured by a space mob boss during the journey back to Earth in season seven. She needs to use her wits, Paladin training, and trust in her team to escape.
A Wolf in Thieves Clothing: (Plance) Continued fic for the Carrot and Stick Plance bang earlier this year! This is an AU based off of Lupin the Third, the Castle of Cagliostro.
Shootin' the Breeze (Just Say Yes): (Plance) Written for the Happily Ever After Plance Zine. This is a wild west AU that I was particularly pleased with! Ends in a proposal and has a healthy portion of danger!
Plan is a Four Letter Word: (Plance) Lance and Pidge have separate ideas on what their Valentine's Day plans are. Humorous miscommunication.
One for the Movies: (Plance) The plance baby wants in on date night.
Carmen Sandiego (2019) Fics Posted*:
Saved for Memories: VILE discovers Player's existence and brings him in as bait to lure Carmen back. Using the truth extractor, the Faculty get a front row view to Player's memories and how exactly he came to know Carmen.
The Kalosian Castle Caper: A retelling of the first CS episode as a Pokemon AU!
A Good Time: An epilogue gift for @constantconfusion14 and her 'Player tries field work for a caper' fic, Best Laid Plans.
Geography Teacher Player AU
A Teaching Moment: Player's first day of his first year of teaching. Carmen comes to visit to offer congratulations and assure him that he made the right career decision.
The Inspector and the Little Pirate: Devineaux and Julia are on ACME recruitment duty at a high school science fair. Carmen is there to support Player's project. VILE is also there to recruit after ACME decimated their numbers. Chase POV, he learns a little bit more about Carmen and does some bonding with Player.
Off the Hook: At the end of Player's first year of teaching. He helps ACME out on a stakeout gone horribly wrong.
Modern Fantasy Familiar AU
Strange and Familiar: Introduction to the world. Player comes from a magical family. He worries over why he hasn't heard from Black Sheep since he tracked her to Morocco.
Recovery: Directly picks off from Strange and Familiar. Carmen is injured and Player and his parents start her on the path to recovery. They grapple with their new shared magic and get excited over the idea of taking down VILE together.
Relax: Carmen is injured in a caper. Player and his mother make sure that Carmen heals and relaxes and that she is safe here. She's home.
Overload: Carmen, Zack, Ivy, and Player meet up pre-caper to discuss last second plans. Found family fluff.
A Losing Game: The dark Red arc.
Whumptober Collection:
You've Got A Friend: Player takes a gap year before university to travel the world with Carmen. When she gets sick, he finds some relief in being an in-person caretaker this time around.
Found: AU where Black Sheep is never able to escape VILE and get in touch with Player again. Ten years of searching, Player finally finds his best friend again.
All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go: VILE has both Carmen and Player captive on a cruise ship, traveling towards VILE island.
Paper Trail: Maelstrom POV. The Professor bullies a captive Player during the dark red arc.
I Know This Looks Bad...: After VILE discovers Player's existence in a canon divergence AU, Shadowsan is forced to act sooner than he'd like. Unfortunately he didn't tell Player what the plan was before he pulled a Carmen and kidnapped Player first. Prequel to @sakarrie-creates fic Blind Rage, where Carmen confronts Shadowsan on the issue, thinking Player is dead.
*Also written were 44 ficlets of varying lengths not posted.
Best title: Saved for Memories
I love the layers behind this. The crux of the fic is the villains forcing the protagonist to show them cherished memories that happen to be very useful to the bad guys, when those good times with his best friend deserved to be kept more sacred than that.
Worst title: I Know This Looks Bad…
I definitely was not thinking when I posted this fic.
Favorite Piece of Writing:
From The Inspector and the Little Pirate. I consulted by CS buddies and their unanimous decision was this:
Chase turns his head to indeed see that his car is being driven away. But it is not the fact that his car is being stolen that fills him with terror.
Player had been in that car. There hadn’t been four students to protect, there had been five .
Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?
I went into the year assuming I’d continue to write more plance fic. Then Carmen Sandiego (2019) had its finale in January and I’ve been solidly entrenched since. Churning out 16 fic of various lengths certainly proved that. I also got to do Whumptober again this year. I’d missed it.
What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
Off the Hook. Post canon has a special place in my heart and it was my chance to touch on the main cast interacting with each other on friendly terms and living to their full potential.
Okay, NOW your most popular story.
Actually, A Teaching Moment and Saved for Memories both have 219 kudos as of today, which is WILD. Which makes sense, both of these I churned out closest to the end of the series, so there was more readership at the time.
Story most underappreciated by the universe?
Paper Trail. I like to think I’m super clever with the outline of the story and writing Maelstrom’s POV delighting in Player’s despair was SUPER fun. Also most fun to write and potentially saddest. It's a pretty dismal situation for the protagonists.
Fav dialogue from it: “Sometimes there is no reason for evil,” Maelstrom explains, one he’s given to students asking the same. “I just enjoy seeing others suffer. Other times, others are simply means to an end.”
Story with single sweetest moment?
Off the Hook, the scene at the end where Carmen and Player chat. The entire fic has been a high stress caper and Carmen calls simply to chat with her friend. She then tells him to go to bed lol.
Hardest story to write?
The Kalosian Castle caper was like pulling teeth at times, but A Wolf in Thieves Clothing was even moreso. I just haven’t been in a vld mood for most of the year.
Most overdue story?
A Bird in the Hand. Written for the Pidge Angst Bang this year, I’ve had the first portion written for nearly two years so I was super happy to see it to fruition.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
I wrote for totally new fandom and characters. I’m branching out to a couple other fandoms too. It’s been relaxing. I'm currently writing a short Pokemon fic, and wrote three Miraculous Ladybug ficlets as a challenge to see how much I could get right about the series from just tumblr posts. Apparently I got pretty close lol.
What are your fic writing goals for next year?
My goals are to enjoy writing. Minimize commitments. Go with the muse.

Road to War
Part: 5/?
Pairings: Ulfric x Dragonborn; Brynjolf x OC; Cicero x OC; Ondolemar x OC
Summary: After leaving Windhelm, the group travel to the headquarters of Ayla’s rebellion.
Warnings: Descriptions of violence and gore; Skyrim takes on a bit of ‘Game of Thrones’ feeling; May contain controversial themes.
Wordcount: 1921
-----
Xaliyah sits atop of her dark brown stallion, Caper, as they navigate the road through the Pale. She brushes a strand of her hair out of her face and glances over at Brynjolf, who sits atop his palomino horse. She quickly looks away when he begins turning his head towards her. Instead, she focuses on the road ahead and at the signs of another snowstorm.
"Should we make camp?" Xaliyah suggests, looking over at Ayla who is on her black stallion, Paladin she named him. The Dragonborn glances up at the sky before replying.
"We have a few hours of daylight left and the storm will most likely miss us," she explains, giving Xaliyah a quick glance over her shoulder, "the base isn't far from here anyway. We might make it in time,"
"What exactly is this base you speak of?" Brynjolf questions from beside Xaliyah, staring ahead at the two in front of them, "is it a cluster of tents or a hut in the woods?"
Kharjo lets out a laugh as he rides is painted mare, "a group of tents or a hut couldn't hold an entire rebellion," he explains with another chuckle, "do you think Ulfric Stormcloak or General Tullius has their soldiers living in tents in the forest?"
Xaliyah bites back a laugh as she glances over at Brynjolf, who seems unamused by the Khajiit's remark, "of course not," he says, tone annoyed, "it's just that you two never really properly described this base of yours,"
"You'll see it soon, I promise," Ayla speaks up, "it's unlike anything you've ever seen," she adds before they return to a comfortable silence. Xaliyah stares up at a flock of birds as they find a tree to rest on, chirping noisily amongst themselves. Two squirrels hop in the snow as a rabbit chases another rabbit. This is such a peaceful moment and Xaliyah knows she should enjoy it while it lasts. This may be the last peaceful moment for a long while.
"Here we are," Ayla says after another hour of traveling. The sun is starting to set, but the entire group could see the looming fortress in front of them. It was obviously dwemer made, given by the dwemer's infamous architectural style.
"It's dwemer," Brynjolf says softly after a few moments of staring at the building.
Ayla chuckles, "that it is," she replies, "it used to be a ruin, but we rebuilt it in a few months time, trying to keep it similar to its original form,"
It's massive. Built literally for a rebellion. Xaliyah grabs hold of the reins as Caper tosses his head, a frightened neigh leaving him as he takes a few steps back.
The source of the horse's nervousness shows itself as it flies above them, letting out a loud roar, causing several flocks of birds to fly off. The group watches as the dragon lands on the roof of the base.
"Shall we?" Ayla asks, urging her horse forward and the group follows. Xaliyah looks over at Brynjolf to see him giving her a questioning look. She shrugs in response before urging Caper to gallop forward to catch up to Ayla and Kharjo.
~
"What do you think, lass?" Brynjolf asks her from the doorway to her new room for the next year or so, "is it everything you hoped for?"
Xaliyah takes a deep breath and runs a hand through her brown curls as she sits down on her bed. The room is pretty large, a fireplace against the main wall surrounded by a few chairs. A window shows the snowy mountains surrounding the base.
"It is different," she replies, meeting his gaze quickly before looking away, "less familiar than the cistern, but I can get used to this," she adds with a small smile.
"Definitely a lot more fresh food than what the Flagon offers," Brynjolf says with a chuckle, one Xaliyah returns. As much as she likes the Flagon and enjoys spending most of her free time in the small tavern, the food wasn't always as fresh as it was in other establishments.
"I am so going to tell Vekel that you said that," Xaliyah threatens and watches as the redhead lifts an eyebrow, a hum leaving him.
"Not if I can stop you, lass," he challenges, his mouth slowly forming a smile as Xaliyah stares at him, eyebrows raised as she processes his challenge, "I don't need Vekel taking away my ale when we get back,"
Xaliyah rolls her eyes as she stands, "even if you do stop me, I can still prohibit you from drinking ale as well, lad," she responds, arms crossed and a small smile on her lips. Before Brynjolf can reply, a new voice joins them.
"Sorry to interrupt this...moment," Ayla says, peering around Brynjolf, who still stands in the doorway, "but we have business to attend to," with a smile, Ayla disappear back into the hall and Xaliyah sighs.
"Right. We're at war, not on vacation," she breathes out, mainly to herself as she opens her eyes, "there is plenty of things that need to be done before we get back to Riften,"
Brynjolf pushes himself off of the doorway, "I need to go finish unpacking my things," he explains, jabbing his thumb over his shoulder and out the door, "I'll come to find you two when I finish," he adds before walking out the door, revealing a smirking Ayla leaning against the doorway, playing with an arrow.
"What?" Xaliyah questions as she walks out of the room and past Ayla, who turns around by rolling onto her right shoulder before pushing herself off of the wall and catches up to her friend.
"You and Brynjolf," she says and Xaliyah closes her eyes. She knew this conversation would happen the moment Ayla interrupted, "you finally talk about your feelings? It was getting pretty hot in there,"
Xaliyah sends her best friend a glare as they walk, "of course not," she says with a shake of her head as they round a corner, "we were just joking around about me telling Vekel to forbid Brynjolf any alcohol, that's it,"
Xaliyah can feel the Dragonborn's gaze on her and knew that her words didn't end the discussion, "it wasn't joking, more like teasing," Ayla responds as they near a set of grand doors leading to somewhere important.
It is then that Xaliyah realizes that there are a bunch of soldiers around them, not escorting them of course. Most groups are mindlessly walking and talking while others are jogging with a general is yelling commands at them.
"You let your soldiers train inside?"
Ayla glances at the jogging group and shrugs, "it's a massive place," she explains as she pushes the doors open, "they get a lot of exercise and stay out of the bitter wind and freezing temperatures outside. It's a win-win,"
"I see," Xaliyah says softly as she follows Ayla through a vast library. Scholars walk around, each with a book or two in their hands. Several sit and study the writings while others are busy putting away their books or finding new ones to study.
"Ah, Ayla, good to see you've returned!" a voice says and Xaliyah looks forward to see a High Elf woman with white hair, unlike her fellow High Elves. She had a cheery expression on her face and her white colored pupils shine, "I have heard that your mission to ally with the Stormcloaks was successful. Definitely helped with the moral here,"
"Thank you, Asteria," Ayla says as they begin walking through the large library, "how have things fared here since I've been gone?" the elf, who wears her hair in a messy bun with curls falling out of it, follows Ayla.
"The soldiers remain strong and fit and ready for battle," Asteria informs the woman, "Vilkas has made sure of that. The wizards here have trained long and hard to learn their respective skill. Plus we continue to learn about various lost treasures scatted around Skyrim, each one with the potential to aid our cause should you find one,"
"Thank you, Asteria," Ayla says, coming to a stop in the middle of the library, "and have you received any news about Athena or Tal?"
The elven woman shakes her head, "I'm sorry, but no," she says before her gaze lands on Xaliyah, "I see you managed to talk the leader of the Thieves Guild to fully join the Rebellion,"
Xaliyah shrugs, "when the home of your base is under Imperial control and lead by a power-hungry woman, it tends to give you more reason to fight," she explains and Asteria smiles before a scholar approaches them, whispering something into the elf's ears.
"I'm sorry, but something important needs my attention," she says, returning her gaze to the two women, "one of the destruction class mages set a training room on fire. Again," she then turns and rushes off, following the scholar.
"Who is she?"
"Asteria," Ayla explains, "the headmistress of the College of Winterhold. Very knowledgeable in every subject of magic and, with the help of the College's librarian, has a book on every subject known to man,"
"How did you manage to recruit the Thieve's Guild, Dark Brotherhood, the Companions, and the College to your cause?" Xaliyah asks, shaking her head as they begin walking to the other end of the library again, "do you bargain with gold? Horses? Weapons?"
"Freedom, Xal," Ayla interrupts, "I promise them with a life of freedom. That and we're friends with their leaders, well, I am anyway," she opens another door and this leads to a room with a long table and in the middle is a map of Skyrim.
"This is where all our planning will be taking place, I assume," Xaliyah observes, glancing around the lit room. There are no windows in the room nor any chairs surrounding the table. Bookshelves line the walls and adorn a few books on each shelf. A chandelier made of metal hangs over the table with eight candles on it. Stone makes up the walls, ceiling, and floor of the room.
"Every single plan we make will be made in this room," Ayla confirms as she walks over to the table, "soon Athena and Tal will be here and we can begin our assault on the Thalmor," Xaliyah watches as Ayla smiles at the last part.
"You really want them gone, huh?" she asks the raven-haired woman.
"Of course I do," Ayla replies, standing up straight, "they have caused too much pain and suffering to the people of Skyrim. That needs to end,"
"Is this justice you seek or personal vengeance?" Xaliyah questions the Dragonborn further.
"Both," is her reply, "I will not hear anything else on this subject," Ayla adds before walking out of the room and back into the library, "Athena and Tal should be here tomorrow and that is when we plan our next move against the Thalmor,"
Xaliyah nods in understanding as they walk back across the library, "with a base like this that holds a large army, we might as well attack the Thalmor headquarters directly,"
Ayla shakes her head as they walk out of the library, "we'd lose," she explains, leading Xaliyah down the hallway, "the Thalmor are masters with magic. Most of my army would be dead before we pass the walls,"
"Then how do you expect to win this war?" the thief asks and the woman beside her smiles.
"Time, strategy, and the fall of an Empire,"

The Paladin Caper by Patrick Weekes
The Paladin Caper by Patrick Weekes
I didn’t want this series to be over. I really didn’t. I know trilogies are a thing and all, but couldn’t we have, I don’t know, approximately a million more of these books? I mean, there were five seasons of Leverage and that was also all about heists, so how about more of the Rogues of the Republic series? But no, all good things must come to an end, including all of our favorite book series. I…

I started reading the Parasol Protectorate series because of your art, and found the first one very enjoyable! (The others are on my TBR list!) Also the Patrick Weekes Paladin Caper books (had seen them around but was not convinced to read until I saw your art)! There are now a ton of others on my TBR list because of your art, too! You really bring the characters to life, and it's super compelling!!
What book did you read because of my art?
You’ve read Patrick Weekes books! That makes me so happy, I wish I could find art of them, besides my own. Also yes, PP is amazing, hope you enjoy.

I saw this great DnD inktober chart from @berntkat but I can’t draw so I’m just making DnD characters with backstories and posting them instead. These are up for grabs if anyone wants to use them. If you do, let me know, I’d love to hear about their adventures! You can also find more here.

Nickname: Dusk/Dusky Age: 44      Height: 6’1”      Weight: 150 lbs Eventual Order: Order of the Ancients       Background: Far Traveler
Description: Dusk resembles an african wild cat. She has reddish brown fur with faint spotting on her chest and limbs. Somewhat unusual for a tabaxi, she also has blue eyes. Each ear is adorned with two gold hoops and she wears a matching gold collar. Despite her slim frame, Dusk is surprisingly strong.
Backstory: After a long labor, Dusk was born just as the evening birds began their second song with one another. She was named for this occasion, though it would have further meaning for her life’s path. For most of her life she moved from city to city in search of stories, adventure, and occasional mischief. However, as she approached 40, she started to find the cities held less interest for her. It was all starting to seem the same. It was the same capers and the same stories, just with a different cast. Looking for something new, she turned to the places in between the cities. Previously she’d never given much thought to what lay beyond the road but now she headed into the wilds. There she spent several years exploring alone or with clans of druids, firbolgs, and centaurs. Through them she learned of the threats faced by the wild places of the world, both magical and mundane, and decided to fight to preserve their ever changing mysteries.
Personality: Impulsive in her youth, Dusk has learned to be more cautious with age, although it still gets the better of her on occasion. She hasn’t quite reached the stern matronly voice of experience stage yet, but she’s getting closer than she realizes. Dusk also laughs a lot, a strong deep laugh with just a rumble of a purr beneath it.
Note: Due to time crunches, the character sheets may be incomplete or have errors. I tried my best, but double check before using them.

Black Paladin Week Day 7: AU
@blackpaladinweek
I am very hungover today, so will attempt to do all three requests I received yesterday as my chances of working are zero. First up, @blackcatbone :
It started with eggs.
‘Shiro?’ Keith called from within the kitchen. Shiro looked up from his tablet, blinking the after-image from his eyes. It was Sunday; glorious, sunny Sunday with no work, no workout, and the long-standing ritual of Keith cooking breakfast. Keith was an excellent cook. And fiercely particular.
‘Shiro!’
‘Uh-huh? Shiro answered, peeling himself from the couch with a groan. He padded into the kitchen to see Keith stood in front of the fridge in his boxers and a raggedy Stiff Little Fingers t-shirt, carton of eggs in hand. His fringe was stiff with flour and his arms were dusted with it up to the elbow.
‘Eggs don’t live in the refrigerator, Shiro.’
Shiro pressed his lips together and sighed through his nose. He nodded at the open fridge door. ‘You might want to close the–’
‘They live in the pantry,’ Keith said, and gestured to said pantry: a rescued filing cabinet he’d refitted with the backs of broken chairs. He flipped the door closed with his shoulder. ‘You’re a scientist. You should know better.’
‘A data scientist.’ Shiro followed him over to the countertop where smoked salmon, soft cheese and capers were already rolled into tidy little parcels. Coffee was still steaming in the pot, and the smell of baking bread filled the room. A large mixing bowl stood waiting for eggs, presumably for pancakes. Keith plucked one from the carton and warmed it between his hands.
‘Here,’ Shiro chuckled, taking the egg from him. ‘Your hands are freezing. May as well put them back in the fridge.’
Keith tutted and picked up a second egg. Shiro booped him on the nose, then again, when Keith reeled away like a fussy cat. Shiro tossed the egg in the air and with his left hand snatched up one of the salmon rolls. He popped it in his mouth and caught the egg with the same hand.
‘Show-off,’ murmured Keith.
‘Iffgut!’ Shiro exclaimed through a mouthful.
‘Out!’ Keith ordered, but there was a laugh buried in his eyes and in the fond tilt of his head.
Shiro swallowed. ‘Who knew some punk who doesn’t wash his jeans for six months at a time could be so refined.’
‘I won’t be insulted by a man in cargo shorts.’ Keith stepped sideways to guard the salmon rolls. ‘And it’s Japanese denim. You’re not supposed to– hey!’
Shiro pressed a kiss to Keith’s forehead and in the same moment reached behind him to collect two more rolls.
Keith dropped the egg to the counter, and snatched Shiro’s, depositing it also. ‘You’re fowl!’ he pouted, pushing Shiro away and leaving floury hand-marks like cave paintings on the front of his black vest.
Shiro grinned and popped a roll into his mouth. ‘You love me.’
‘Not when you sabotage my eggs and leave my iron skillet soaking in the sink every time you make attempts to cook.’ Keith began manoeuvring Shiro from the room.
Shiro slid the second roll into his mouth and held his hands up in surrender. He spun in place and planted a second kiss on Keith’s forehead. ‘Love you, baby.’
‘Out!’
‘So good!’ Shiro called, pointing to the decimated salmon in his mouth. ‘You’re pretty decent!’ He tugged open the fridge door on his way past and scampered back to the couch at Keith’s bothered screech.
OoO
‘You’re so bloated,’ Shiro said, patting Keith’s distended tummy.
Keith hummed and performed a spine-cracking stretch against Shiro’s side. ‘Worth it.’
They lay together on the couch at horrible angles, but double-chins be damned, it was the best part of a Sunday. Keith’s red-socked feet dangled over the edge of the couch. His hair – still unwashed, still sticky with flour and egg – had been stuffed under a black beanie that had seen much, much better days. He was, God-save-Shiro, adorable.
‘What do you want to watch?’ Shiro asked, curling an errant strand of Keith’s hair around one finger.
‘Not transformers or some garbage with robots.’ He twisted in Shiro’s hold, poking him with unforgivingly sharp elbows. Ow, Shiro mouthed. Keith looked at him with clear, bright eyes. ‘Cosmos?’
Shiro groaned. ‘Keith... again?’
Keith blinked at him, unrelenting.
‘Cosmos. You got it, babe.’
Keith smiled and settled himself against Shiro’s side again. ‘Thanks,’ he said, pulling Shiro’s arm across him.
