The anthology manga were created by a total of 42 different illustrators (including bonus illustrations), none of whom were the game's creator Toboso Yana, though she did draw the covers!
We do not know how much oversight was involved in the content and there are parts in the stories that conflict with the content of the game, so it might be best to consider Twst's alternative media (the anthology manga / serialized manga / novels) as canon to themselves individually but probably not to the game, or to each other ^^
They are maybe similar to Square-Enix-branded fanart, like the art gallery books!

Who were some of your favourite overall performances in terms of physical acting? Hands, face, body, whatever you prefer.

 Hmm this is is a really hard question to- 
Billkin in I Told Sunset About You
Billkin as Teh is one of my favorite physical performances, not just in BL but of all time. I said this in The Conversation episode where we talked about I Told Sunset About You but for a boy that does not say much, Teh is incredibly loud as a character. The way he sits up, the way his face falls, the way he always circles, the grandiose and the miniscule ways that his body reflects his emotions. Do not get me wrong, PP is gorgeous and devastating in his role as Oh, but Billkin has a very very difficult character to contend with and to embody and from the posture, to the motion, the anger, the tears, the jealousy, the joy. He is constantly, constantly moving: tapping his fingers, shaking his leg, pacing, peeking, there is no way Teh is not an exhausting role to play, and he absolutely nailed it.

Nike Nitidon in 180 Degree Longitude Passes Through Us 
Nike as Inthawut is an understated physical performance that I really enjoyed, Inthawut as a character is incredibly self-isolating, distrusting, shameful, and Nike carries that character very stiffly, squared shoulders, rimrod back, but he still moves with such grace to him. I watched all of 180 Degrees just thinking “he’s moving like a dancer” the entire time. Which is such a fascinating way to exist in a story where Inthawut and Sasiwimol as characters are engaging in a sort of social dance around each other and around Wang as they attempt to deflect questions about Siam.

Hagiwara Riku in My Beautiful Man: Eternal 
Hagiwara is incredible generally but I really want to highlight his performance in My Beautiful Man: Eternal which has one of my favorite acting moments of BL. That is his performance when he is rescuing Kiyoi from Anna’s stalker. He moves so swiftly, so gracefully on a dime between threatening and violent, to soft and loving in his body and in his voice and in the shimmer in his eyes. Is it a surprise that he was able to pull that off? No, he showed such incredible range in his physical performance in the original season jumping between the timid, awkward, pushover to the loud, aggressive to the point of needing three people to hold him down, when he is defending Kiyoi, but it was truly so fun to watch him turn it on and off at any time. 
Also just an additional shout out to Yasei Yugei, specifically for the scene in Utsukushii Kare 2 when Hira tells him he doesn’t love him. The way his face fell? Incredible.

Hasegawa Makoto in Koi wo Suru nara Nidome ga Joto
I wouldn’t say Hasegawa as Miyata is overall my favorite physical performer, however he had one of my favorite face changes of all time in the episode 4 sex scene. The way he sets his lips, the challenging look in his eyes, it was such an incredibly impressive shift in Miyata who has until that point been rather annoyed, bitchy, or awkward.

Tod and Boy in Ghost Host, Ghost House
Again, I wouldn’t say they have one of my favorite physical performances overall BUT Tod and Boy in Ghost Host, Ghost House had one of my favorite physicality moments of all time with their sex scene in Episode 4. More accurately with the build up to their first time. Kevin in his shorty little short shorts knowing exactly what he was doing. I can’t even describe the whole thing or what exactly it was about the scene that really did me in but you can absolutely feel the desire, the tension through the screen, and that is in huge part due to the physical performance of both of those actors. Pluem covering his mouth, trying to look away, ugh, exquisite.

Nishijima and Uchino in Kinou Nani Tabeta? 
I think the hardest thing for me to appreciate with a lot of the Japanese actors is that I haven’t watched a ton of Japanese media so I rarely see the actors cross over between shows or genres and that makes it hard for me to understand just how talented they are at embodying their characters. But oh my god, these two, they are just. Their hug at the end of season one is one of my favorite moments of all time, it makes me so emotional. The full body panic that washed over Shiro’s body when Kenji turned to leave in the first ever episode of What Did You Eat Yesterday? Kenji’s face during the “I know you’re hurting” line, the increasingly frequent smile from Shiro in season 2. Just AHHHH they are both such good physical performers.

Louis Chiang, Hsu Kai, and Takeda Kuohei in Kiseki: Dear to Me & Old Fashion Cupcake (respectively)
Louis and Hsu gave me the same physical acting moment in Kiseki that I loved in Old Fashioned Cupcake which is the body responding to something differently than the brain is, especially in something as physically demanding and choreographed as a kissing scene. All three of them did such phenomenal jobs in their respective scenes with Ai Di looking so fucking confused when Chen Yi kisses him, and actually kissing back for a split second before biting him, Fan Ze Rui kissing Bai Zhong Yi back while trying to push him away and then immediately giving up, and Nozue fully doing calculus in his head while still kissing Togawa back. I appreciate actors so much because I could never oh my god.

Milk and View in 23.5 Degrees
I gotta get some ladies on here and who better than the loves of my life Milk and View. Milk I just want to commend how variable her performance is between 23.5 and Bad Buddy. I am so so here for all the rolling, flailing, fainting, screaming. She’s doing such an incredible job in what I am sure is a very physically taxing role. 
View going on the complete opposite end of the spectrum with a very stiff character with a very flat affect. I love everything about Aylin, and I especially love those little moments of emotion that do break through. The small smile Aylin gets, the crying breakdown she has on the basketball court, the delay before she too runs all gangly and awkward to the door to greet their friends. Stiffness feels like a hard thing to embody without it feeling like bad acting, because I think a lot of what I see of bad acting comes from people who are too stiff, for completely non-character related reasons.

MOTHERFUCKING BARCODE TINNASIT IN DEAD FRIEND FOREVER
This kid. Was. SO. CREEPY. I am so proud of him! When I first saw Barcode on screen in this show, I thought they picked him for the role of Non because he was the sweet, baby-faced little boy you remember from KinnPorsche and thus would garner sympathy. But no. 
NOPE. 
I WAS WRONG. 
It is because BARCODE IS A FUCKING POWERHOUSE at 18 years old. The laughter, the smiles, the absolutely deranged behavior. The breakdowns. This kid. Holyyyyyyyyyy shit.

In truth there are so so so so so many moments, performances, actors that are just absolutely incredible and worthy of praise, and the nice thing is that even small moments can make huge impacts on me, on an audience as a whole. Sometimes it’s not just the physicality of the actors that really makes the performance, it’s the anatomy of the scene, it’s choreography, it’s lighting, it’s sound. The silence in Our Dining Table, Episode 8 when Yutaka reaches back for the briefest of moments. The editing of the masturbation scene in I Feel You Linger in the Air cutting between Jom’s hands on Yai’s back and Jom’s hands on his own body. Han Baram’s sad, sad little face and his sad sad little song and the way he and Im Han Tae cuddle even when they are platonic in Sing My Crush. Sam Lin + Alcohol in We Best Love. Like ugh there’s just so many beautiful physical moments out there. 
Additional Shout Outs: 
First Kanaphan, Mark Pakin, Fourth, Ohm, Singto: all of these boys are so impressive in their physical acting in so many ways. First as Yok and First as Akk was almost completely unrecognizable to me when I first saw them. First is an incredible physical actor, and I wish that GMMTV would actually let him maintain complex characteristics rather than turning him in to the weepy boy every time. But from a physical acting standpoint, he’s incredible. Mark Pakin truly is GMMTV’s six man: he was on The Warp Effect, Moonlight Chicken, and My School President which all aired at the same time, with him playing three very different characters. It was such a treat to see Fourth and Gemini back to back in MSP and MLC as well, but the happy bouncy puppy dog that was Gun compared to the jaded, angry young adult that was Li Ming was just marvelous to behold, I swear to god I saw a storm cloud pass over that kid’s brow at one point during MLC. Ohm because of course. Singto because that dude is able to convey so much by moving so little of his face, it’s truly astounding. 
James Supamakong in Bed Friend, Episode 4
This is honestly more from a vocal perspective but the way he fucking screamed and cried in both attempted rape scenes haunts me to this day. 
The cast of Ossan’s Love Returns, but especially all of the fight scenes between Hayashi Kento (Maki) and Yoshida Kotero (Kurosawa), they were so fun to watch, especially because they are supposed to present as such put together characters, and the sustained fight scene in Episode 6 was fucking hysterical.

Conan Puzzle Voice Line Translations
The Conan Puzzle Match-3 gacha game has a number of voiced lines associated with its character cards. Most of these lines are anime lines or same-y game-related phrases, but there were a handful I thought were fun out of context too. I've translated them here.

These two actors will be playing the main characters in the hell is other people adaptation that is being produced in Japan right now! Release date is set for november 15 this year.
As far as I know, they will be adapting the webtoon and not remake the korean drama. I expect a lot of changes to be made, especially since the character on the right is reminding me more of the webtoon version of moonjo, aka yeongsam/영삌 (he even resembles Ki-Hyuk, who resembled Yeongsam a lot too)

As for the actors, here is what I could find:
- Jongwoo is renamed "Yuu" and is played by Hachimura Rintaro (funny enough, the guy is also part of a boy group/an Idol. Just like Yim Siwan). His only acting roles so far are this movie, another movie and a series.
- Moonjo/Yeongsam is renamed "Kirishima" and is played by Yanagi Shuntaro. He has played in quite a lot of movies, including horror and thriller works.
- Ji-eun (girlfriend of Jongwoo) is renamed "Megumi" and is played by Okada Yui (google translate gave me the name "Yumi" name which tells you it's not really accurate...). She has played in quite a lot of movies and series, including horror and thriller works.
- I'm pretty sure "Yamaguchi" who is described as yakuza-like man is Hee-Joong, the guy that "moves out" early.
- "Maru" and "Goru" are probably the twins.
- the only name left is "Yoshiko" which might be the owner of Eden or in this case, "Hakubone"

I've changed the students' classes. This, amongst other topics are just things I changed for the sake of it. Some of these new seating arrangements help with the plot of the story, and some others are just changed for no particular reason.

This summer night had been particularly warm, rough even per se to the body—creating more heatstrokes and collapses within a short span of time than a paramedic could count on their fingers, without having a stroke on their own—and yet the streets and clubs are still buzzing with excitement and joyful moments of life.
Kenji Hagiwara—while being in one of these clubs with the others to celebrate and despite air conditioning being on full blast, there's still a building warmth in there—had a dilemma like no one else and musing at the bar, with a good cooled glas of Peppermint-tonic, through his thoughts about and how he's gonna approach this sort of problem like situation—as he is the one who had to figure it out and solve this—without either of involved persons (and himself) getting much emotional damage from it.
Kenji should be on the dancefloor, like the rest of his friends—or at least two of them as the other two sulking around the bar (just like him, in a sort of sense)—dancing with some pretty girl, but that thought he immediately crossed out when Kenji saw how you, his younger brother, getting more and more uncomfortable—nervous and close to panic even—on the dancefloor as you tried to get more distance between yourself and a man—and Kenji narrowed his eyes, ready to start a fistfight if needed to, but sighed in relief when Jinpei got up from his seat and—after positioning himself like a bodyguard and exchanging a few words—dragged you back next to Kenji.
And here starts Kenji's dilemma; see, problem one, Jinpei—his best friend since childhood—had recently admitted to him, that he does likes you—his younger precious brother—and would, with Kenji's blessing, ask you out for a date—if Jinpei wouldn't be so damn stubborn and towering boarding towards you.
Just thinking back to it, how Jinpei likes to always tower behind you—whenever you go with him and Kenji somewhere into the city—and glaring menacingly threatening, behind his sunglasses, at every man who comes remotely close to you, gives Kenji a headache.
Jinpei is already acting like a boyfriend to you, he just wouldn't admit it and doesn't make any final move.
Problem two, you too have admitted—long ago and after screaming in anger at Jinpei for being such a unnecessary idiotic asshole towards you—that you have a crush on Jinpei—and although also having said to Kenji once that Rei looks handsome (and Kenji is sure you had developed once a small crush on Rei as well)—but in the same breath of sentence, you pessimistically said you didn't have a chance with Jinpei at all and looked rather dejected and gloomy.
And problem three, Kenji also knew that Rei was crushing on you as well—but those feelings of his friend would be unrequited, because after Rei once had said—rather loudly and with too much enthusiasm—just how pretty this one girl, which had passed by them during another nights out dinner, had been—your crush on Rei had quickly, pessimistically dejected again, dissolved into nothing but friendship like affection.
So all of this together, had created today's headache pounding dilemma—which Kenji had to waste, on his own accords, on tonights fun times.
Sighing, Kenji takes another sip from his drink, before turning to you and asking if you're feeling okay—you only nodded at him and once the next song had started, which makes you perk up when hearing the first beat of the melody, you were already moving toward the dancefloor once more.

Jinpei's glare deepened, when he saw that penetrating man—definitely in the age range of could be your father or even grandpa—moving closer and closer towards you, hands brushing against your ass every so often and Jinpei was damn sure he saw that man groping on it too.
The anger of Jinpei, in contrast to Kenji's protectiveness like wrath—which had visibly telltale signs, like the tighten grip on the glas, jaw clenched and the narrowed eyes into a scowling grimace—was much more passive, but at the same time just as wrathful as Kenji.
So with evermore irksome bubbling up in him, Jinpei had decided—before Kenji would actually start a fistfight, although that's more Jinpei's agenda of doing—to tell that stranger to kindly fuck off and making it clear that you're already (unofficially) taken.
Getting up from the stool, discarding his bottle of beer for a momentarily minute, Jinpei—with menacing glare of a sneer—was making his way towards the dancefloor, looking as looming as ever with his height and some people already scurrying away by the sight of him.
»Oi! I advise to leave my friend alone and fuck off somewhere else.«
»Jin.« you said warningly—as you didn't wanted Jinpei nor Kenji, because your brother does look, from how you could tell from afar, just as pissed as Jinpei—although relieved to have him here now.
For a while, when the stranger came and asked you out for a dance, you had tried to ignore him—moving through the crowd of people on the dancefloor in hope of loosing the man—but he keeps following you and while you had told him many times »No.« and asked—even politely—to leave you alone, he just wouldn't stop and keeps pestering you—coming closer and so much closer that he touched you on places, you didn't be want to from a stranger.
»And why should I?« the stranger ask reeking already of too much booze and cigarette smoke, making attempts—with his sweaty dirty hands—to reach for you.
»Because if you don't,« Jinpei started—voice audibly dropping an octave deeper in the darkened tone of threatening—arm going around your waist and pulling you close to him—moving your head in such direction, that your view had been set towards the bar and Kenji.
»I will arrest you for sexual harassment and this means two months worth of Jail.«
The stranger scoffed, muttering unpleasant words about you under his breath, before scurrying off quickly.
Pursing your lips, you looked at Jinpei unimpressed—using the authority voice, which Kenji also likes to use on you whenever you're doing something remotely dangerous dumb, was just a mature move of your crush friend before you break out into a small smile.
»Thank you, Jin,« a sigh of utter relief came from your lips immediately, after you said the words of thankfulness—body going relaxed loose once again, closing your eyes for a moment and letting your head rest on Jinpei's shoulder.
»Anytime. Now c'mon, sunshine, let's get back to the bar or dear Kenny really gonna brother feral, he also gonna buy you a cola.«

After reassuring your brother that you're indeed fine, thanks to Jinpei—having to drink the whole glas of Cola for Kenji's sake of reassurance—and that he hasn't to be worried anymore, you made your way towards Rei.
Ever since you all had gotten inside the club, Rei had not once been on the dancefloor—looking so upsetting beat, that it makes you worried for your friend, after all coming here tonight was meant to be a good time of carefree happiness.
»Hey, Rei, why so sad? Shouldn't you be dancing like the rest of us?«
»I'm not feeling the mood to dance tonight, [Name].«
»Why?«
»Because I realised that the person my heart beats for, is now out of reach....« and Rei would be dammed if he ever confesses to you, that you're the person whose out of reach for him—especially when Rei had saw how close you and Jinpei had been—and leaving a gaping hole in his heart, where all his love seemed to vanish into steams of air.
»And? Since when does that stop you? Don't let this person be the doom of your happiness. C'mon! Love is everywhere, you just have to find the right one! Now, if you decide to come and dance, you know where to find me Rei-chan,« bopping Rei's nose, before going back to dance—the next song being one of your favourite.
Rei watches how you walked away, body already moving in swing to the beat of the song—and Rei knew you're right, it's just you're part of his happiness, but he isn't part of yours.
Glancing towards Jinpei, Rei came to an final decision.

If it weren't for Rei, his friend—who had gone to him and said something along the lines of, if you stubborn dumbass don't make a move on [Name], you will lose him forever—Jinpei would probably never had gone back to the dance floor and ask you to be his boyfriend.
And neither would Jinpei—although he does possess enough of, close to arrogance even, such trait—have the confidence to dance with you.
But here Jinpei was, having you as his boyfriend—dancing to your favourite heart desiring song—and being the luckiest man in Japan.

From the sweater AU's cutting room floor - a headcanon on Rei's non-existent relationship history (with a sprinkling of Hagimatsu)
A relationship was just never an option - with the course of his life set early on, he couldn't afford any distractions. And that was what the girls who confessed to him were, quite frankly. They didn't know him, only saw his meticulously crafted good looks and 'exotic appeal', as one of them had the gall to say to his face, as if it was supposed to be a compliment. Suffice it to say, those confessions never went well.
With time, Rei came to realize that maybe it wasn't just their superficiality at fault. When Hagiwara claimed those beauties would be wasted on him anyways, Rei couldn't see where he was coming from. They were just girls, no one of them more or less pretty than the others. His friend just gave him a strange look when he said as much, and instead invited Rei to double dates with guys.
(Matsuda had always joined them, and, looking back on it, Rei's reasonably sure it wasn't just because they were such good friends.)
He didn't find love there, but at least it helped him figure out his tastes. He was only human, after all, and sometimes he, too, needed relief. That was all there was to it; physiological functions that occasionally needed to be taken care of in order to maintain a healthy mind and body.
By the time he started working for the NPA, he became both too busy and too tired to even seek out that much. He had the opportunity to be part of something so much larger, so much more important than himself - petty dreams of home and a family faded into obscurity. The job consumed him whole, and Rei let it; his body became nothing more than a tool to achieve his goals. To finally be able to follow his calling, serve his purpose, was all he ever needed.
(Besides, someone who could see through the protective layers of deceit he'd wrapped around himself was a dangerous liability to have. Case in point: Akai Shuuichi.)

Episode 10 was just an absolute masterclass in emotional outbursts. The fight between Lomfon and Patts, then Patts and Tai, then Lomfon and Tien, then Patts and Tai again. Like goddamn, finally thank fuck, Patts is able to let out years worth of frustration and pain at Tai's silence was just so beautiful, and cathartic, and necessary. What an absolutely incredible moment to not only witness but experience. Patts has been so kind, so patient, so forgiving, and it was time for all the pain that he's been letting simmer for two years out. Good! For! Him!
Uea and His Bio Family, Bed Friend

There are few characters in this world I hate more than Uea's mother, and it was so so so so so so wonderful to see Uea finally give her a piece of his mind. I am so proud of him for speaking his mind, standing his ground, and getting the ever living fuck out of his bio family's house. Too personal, sorry, but this fight hit especially well for me because I too have had a parent say they'd live perfectly happily without me, and it was great vindication of my reaction to that to see Uea GTFO immediately after.
Secondarily, James' sobbing screams at the beginning of episode 4 and in the flashback of him getting dragged in to the bathroom when he was an adult have never left my brain. James absolutely crushed those scenes and this was going to be my Bed Friend pick before I remembered this fight exists.
Jim and Li Ming // Heart and His Parents, Moonlight Chicken

I don't think I am exaggerating when I say that Jim and Li Ming's relationship dynamics is one of my favorite of all time. Aof is such an incredible screenwriter/director and I feel like he's able to make such realistic depictions of families in all their complicated glory. The screaming match between Jim and Li Ming is SO good, and really is what solidified my appreciation for Fourth's acting skills because there was a fucking storm cloud on his brow. Happy fucking birthday to you Uncle Jim I guess. Poor fucker.

And then of course, one of the first ever posts I made in the BL Sphere of tumblr was a full essay on Heart's confrontation which I loved so motherfucking much. Once again a much needed fight with lots of interesting, complicated emotions flying around the room.
Kiyoi and Hira, Utsukushii Kare Season 2

"I'm sorry that I like you" one of the best moments of the year for me by far. This fight between Kiyoi and Hira was desperately, and I mean desperately needed. I know changing will be a slow process for the two of them, and even in Eternal they are no where near where they need to be, but Hira needs/needed to cut this Pebble to a God bullshit out and I am so glad that Kiyoi was able to call him on it. Also from a performance standpoint, Yagi Yusei had his work cut out for him as a scene partner to Hagiwara who absolutely bodied his role as Hira. In season one Yagi did not need to do all that much for his performance because we didn't know as much about Kiyoi until closer to the end, but that cannot be the case for Season 2 and Yagi knocked it out of the motherfucking park.
Sunshine and Q, 7 Days Before Valentine

Okay, almost positive this isn't a BL but I love when people structure TV shows like stage plays, and there was a fight between Sunshine and Q in like Episode 4 or 5 where they were shouting over each other and it just felt so real and the dead silence that hit the room when Q said something that struck a chord with Sunshine was expertly handled, and some of the best work I've seen out of Atom the whole show. I don't think anyone gifed it so I can't put the scene in, but I think you talked about it in your Stray Thoughts @bengiyo

I have a question regarding ch 98 that's been bugging me incessantly: in the official translatjon renji says "all i do is bark at the moon", however in fan translations (and anime) renji is seen to be referring to a star. I am unable to find the raws anywhere to ascertain the finality of this conundrum so I was wondering if you could clarify what exactly is the 'object' renji is referring to here and lend us your thoughts?

The Short Version
In the Japanese, Renji says, æ˜Ÿă«ć‘ă‹ăŁăŠć ăˆă‚‹ă°ăŁă‹ ― which could be translated as "I’m just barking at the stars." 
The word he uses is 星 (hoshi), star, not moon. My guess is that the Viz chose "moon" because it’s more idiomatic in English to howl at the moon, and the phrase conveys that sense of lone wolf yearning/misdirection--particularly given that he’s talking about Rukia, and Rukia already has some moon imagery associated with her.
The catch is, the concept of "howling at the moon" also exists in Japanese; for example, there’s a famous modern poet named Hagiwara Sakutarou who wrote a collection titled æœˆă«ć ăˆă‚‹ă€or, well, "Howling at the Moon." (You’ll notice the same verb, but 月 (tsuki/moon) instead of 星 (hoshi/star). But that's not what Renji says. I’d argue that it’s worth considering the idea that Renji was making a choice in not using that idiom! 
The Very Long Version
Stars and Moons and Monkeys and Tigers and Snakes and Dogs and-- oh my!
Tomes have been written about celestial symbolism, in Bleach and otherwise. I’m not a big celestial symbolism person, because they’re such BIG symbols I feel like sometimes they can feel very locked in, if that makes sense? Like X = moon and moon = Y and therefore X = Y. And while I love an extended metaphor, my preference is for very unstable, borderline sloppy referents. Which isn’t to say that celestial symbolism can’t be unstable and sloppy, too, and that’s what I really like about this whole Renji section. Renji is the KING of "imagistically, there is a lot going on here, my man."
As far as folklore is concerned, reaching for the moon might call to mind the story of the monkey reaching for the moon’s reflection:
The branch the monkey’s hanging from breaks and he falls into the water. His folly lies in failing to distinguish between what is real and what is illusion.
One one hand, this is fitting for Renji, our resident howler monkey. I don’t know how much baboon we’ve actually seen at this point, but we’ll see Zabimaru’s nue form very shortly. But of course Zabimaru isn’t just a monkey—he also has the head of a snake. And we have this dog imagery, coming from both Renji’s affiliation with Inuzuri and other body parts in some versions of the nue. And later we’ll have TIGER in the mix, too!!
There’s SO much going on. If Renji were a Project Runway creation, Tim Gunn would probably invite his creator edit—maybe choose one motif, one metaphor, one guy who will scan well on the runway.
But Renji exists in excess, he IS all those things, both in terms of his chimerical zanpakutou spirit and in terms of everything we’ve seen of him thus far: tearing through Ishida and Ichigo; herding butterflies with Rikichi; stunting with Rukia in jail; delivering Rukia to prison; getting stunted on by Aizen in a supply closet; being friends with Hinamori; tearing through Ichigo a second time; and now, finally, giving it all up and begging Ichigo: Just save her.
Bone Metaphors
The reader hasn’t seen it yet, but Renji knows what form Zabimaru’s bankai takes. In addition to all those animals and their potential allegories, we also have bone. In Renji's earlier line, there’s an idiom that I wish were preserved:

In the Viz, he says, "I’ll always be a stray dog." In the Japanese, his line is 「éȘšăźé«„ăŸă§é‡Žè‰ŻçŠŹæ čæ€§ăŒæŸ“ăżä»˜ă„ăŠă‚„ăŒă‚‹ă‚“ă .」Which could be translated as "I am, indelibly, a stray dog to the marrow of my bones /contemptuously." Or, more succinctly:
"I’m a stray dog to the bone."
I love this line because it’s reaching toward Renji’s challenge to Byakuya, insinuating still more layers to Renji’s multitudes.
Different Flavors of Disgust
Still thinking about Renji’s second act in this arc, I am also interested in his subsequent line. He says 掭にăȘるぜ (iya ni naruze), or, in the Viz, "It makes me sick." But I was curious about the kanji 掭 (iya), because it’s more commonly written ć«Œ (iya), which can be used as a negative interjection, or, pronounced differently, as the same word you’d use if you hated snails, or homework, or somethingâ€•ć«Œă„ (kirai). Using the kanji 掭 is a less common spelling, though the meaning is similar. So I was like, well, what is the difference? According to this article, the kanji Renji uses is a lot more common in Chinese. If ć«Œ is an expression of digust or hatred, 掭 suggests that you’ve specifically gotten tired of something (and are now disgusted with it). It’s the kanji you’d use to create the word for a pessimistic worldview, ćŽ­äž–èŠł (enseikan). That is all to say, Renji has become sick and tired of it, and he’s about to change tack.
Failing Poetry 101
Coming back around to the original line, I really like Renji’s "I’m just barking at the stars" specifically because it doesn’t really reference any existing idiom, as might howling at the moon. "Barking at the moon" is an interesting middle ground, in that "barking" definitely feels more dog-like and howling more wolf-like; barking is less majestic, which fits with Renji’s description being derogatory of himself. Renji is not a poet in his use of loaded idioms but in his negation of them. And if Rukia can be described by moon imagery, she too contains multitudes and I think it's well within her power to be the stars, too.
Kira, as Renji’s most poetic friend, probably rolls partway into his grave whenever Renji says stuff like this, because it breaks poetic form. But I think he’s probably also kind of envious that Renji thinks this stuff up, because it’s fresh, new, off-kilter imagery, it is its own kind of poetry, and let's be real, the moon imagery market is fairly saturated. *frames moon with giant rebar hole in body*
So I’d say, "howling at the moon" conjures a certain kind of poetry, steeped in all the macro-folkloric meanings of the moon and dogs/wolves. "Barking at the moon" is kind of half-half. "Barking at the stars" is not a pre-existing idiom (or poem, or expected language), and conjures a completely different referent(s), the immediate of which is, of course, the volume’s own poem. Renji is out here Renji-ing it.
