What are some JBLs you recommend that have good kisses AND a good romance plot

LOL I can hear the pain behind this question, anon. It’s true that a lot of JBLs with a good romance story fail to deliver on the physical intimacy side of things, though that is becoming less and less the norm. I do have some that I think do both reasonably well. I don’t know exactly what “good romance” means to you, but I’m going to assume we’re talking about well-executed romance plots, regardless of the show’s overall genre and focus, where the characters and relationship arc make sense and don’t randomly derail somewhere along the way. Here’s what I got:

I Cannot Reach You

This is a high school friends to lovers (the cream of the crop for that trope, IMO). This is a story about realizing feelings and building the courage to change your most important relationship, so you’ll have to wait a bit to get those kisses but once you do, I think you’ll be pleased.

His

The second chance romance for me. This is a bl film about two men who come back together after a bad breakup and figure out how to make it work. I love them and this story so much.

Old Fashion Cupcake

There’s only one kiss in this short and sweet show, but it’s a real doozy. A super tight workplace age gap romance that knows exactly what it’s doing.

At 25:00 in Akasaka

Two actors who went to college together meet again when they are cast opposite each other in a bl drama, and get tangled up in the blurred lines between their professional and personal relationships. Angst, baby!

The Pornographer

This series features some of the best kissing and sex scenes you will see anywhere in the bl genre, but warning that it’s a twisted and wild ride. There are five installments and you gotta watch them all to see the full picture of the character and romance arcs. It’s so rewarding if you do.

The End of the World With You

From the same mind of the previous entry and similarly hot and wild and weird. This show has more going on than the second chance romance at its core, but it themes come together beautifully.

Tokyo In April Is…

Another second chance romance, this one features a lot of sex but also deals with heavy subject matter, so mind the CWs. It’s one of my favorites of last year and the love story in this one has really stuck with me; it’s beautiful and so hard won.

Love is Better the Second Time Around

This one comes with a disclaimer that it goes off the rails in the final two episodes, but you asked for good kissing so it would feel wrong not to include it. Yet another second chance romance (are you picking up on a theme here?), this one gets two former high school lovers back together as adults to sort out their misunderstandings, lingering feelings, and buckets of sexual tension. It was so good—until it wasn’t.

-i like to think of draco as someone who always puts on a front, like very haughty and elegant and proper (which stems from his childhood) but the only one who can break it and reveal his soft inside is harry. harry is the only one w the power to reduce draco to a blushing soft mess, and whenever it happens he melts <3

-draco endearingly calls harry an idiot

-practiced casualness draco and touch starved harry. draco will be like “merlin harry, your hair truly is hopeless” just as an excuse to run his fingers through it, and harry js closes his eyes and falls into bliss because he adores draco’s touch

-harry is the biggest simp outwardly, like he constantly compliments/gushes about draco just to see him blush while draco is more private with his admiration. draco likes to show his love in the pockets of alone time they find, whispering sweet nothings in the dark for only harry to hear.

-harry is soo clingy. he will come home from a hard day at work and search the house for draco, just to plop on top of him & curl himself around like a koala. draco doesn’t even flinch, just huffs and pulls him closer

-draco is bratty in bed. next question

-harry sometimes gets jealous of theo no matter how many time draco assures him that they are just friends, and theo never misses the opportunity to tease harry relentlessly by jokingly flirting w draco & pushing harry's buttons

It can be a little hard to make time for a date night when your husband runs a very successful noodle shop. Especially when he continues to run it past closing, handling the paperwork and money and all the little parts of running a business people usually don’t think about along with tinkering with whatever recipe he may occasionally feel like. But Li is a very patient panda and surprisingly stubborn. He’s found if he waits long enough, a plan in reach, Ping will eventually find his way to him. Now, Ping sits at the table Li set up and Li serves him for a change.

“Oh, you’re such a gentleman,” Ping gushes as Li pushes his chair in for him at the customer table he repurposed for their date. A candle sits in the middle of it, chasing away the dark of the night. Origami flowers surround the candle, the fruits of multiple nights of work. “And it looks so nice too.”

“Wait till you see the food,” Li says, heading back to the kitchen, hoping that his confidence is founded. His dumplings aren’t Ping’s noodles and they’re definitely not Ping’s dumplings, but they were well liked back in the village.

He sets a bowl in front of Ping and clutches his own between his hands as he stands beside him, waiting for his verdict. The sound of his chopsticks hitting the bowl echoes in his ears. The curl of tension in his belly loosens when Ping finishes the dumpling in two bites.

“They’re good.” Ping hums before rambling to himself more than talking to Li. “I almost think we should add them to the menu. Replace mine. Or combine them. Yes, I think that would be best.”

Li looks at him, surprised. “Aren’t they an old family recipe?”

“What?” Ping laughs, zoning in on him. “No, the restaurant was noodles only until I took over.”

“Wait, so the dumplings-” Li asks.

“Won off some traveling salesman in a game of mahjong,” Ping says, waving his wing casually. Li pauses, opening his mouth. No sound comes out for a long stretch. His husband continues to eat as if he hadn’t just admitted he’d gotten the first food of his Li ever ate through gambling of all things. Just the thought of Ping sitting at a mahjong table, some unscrupulous character in front of him and bets next to them, strikes an odd cord. Ping. Gambling.

“What?”

Ping looks up at him, blinks, then rolls his eyes at his expression. “Oh it’s not that big a deal, really. It was a long time ago. I didn’t even have Po yet.”

“Did you gamble… often?” Li asks. Ping smiles.

“Well, I’m very good at mahjong.”

Li stares as Ping continues to eat. He honestly doesn’t know what to do with the new information. It paints Ping in a different light while somehow explaining a few things.

“Yes.” Ping nods to himself, oblivious to Li’s thoughts. “We should combine the recipes. I think they’d taste better together.”

“Like us?” Li asks, shaking himself from the line of thought.

Ping flushes. “Oh, you big softy. But yes, and I think they’d sell better, too. We should change the name while we’re at it, what do you think?”

Li laughs. “Whatever you want, Ping.” And Ping smiles softly at him. It warms Li’s heart in the same way Mei’s used to. In the same way memories of her smile still does. He smiles back like an instinct.

Later, while they’re eating and laughing and sharing memories, the sound of footsteps outside the round arch of the noodle shop’s entrance breaks into their peace. The late hour has them both turning to the noise. Concern spikes through Li’s veins, hot like blood and twice as thick. It softens when he sees Po at the entrance only for it to snap suddenly back into place when he remembers Po doesn’t have any idea about their relationship. Not the romantic parts of it. They both stand from the table, perhaps a bit too quickly. Li’s chair tips to two legs before slamming back down to four. The noise makes him flinch, just slightly. He looks at Ping, but Ping’s attention is fully on Po.

“You guys are dating?” Po asks, looking between the two of them from his spot, frozen in the middle of the arch.

“Yes? Po, we’re your fathers, is it that weird for us to be dating?” Ping asks and Li can hear the worried note to his tone. Whatever Po’s answer is, Li knows it will have an effect on their quickly budding relationship. Po’s approval is something Ping needs and though he’s been his dad for much less time, Li wants it too.

“Are you kidding me??” Po asks, lighting up, running over to hug them both. “This is great!” He lets them go to bounce between his toes. “You guys were my dads before, of course, but now you’re like- my dads dads. My together dads.”

Li laughs lightly, seeing Po’s excitement and Ping’s relieved fond smile. It makes Ping find his eyes again for the first time since Po entered the room. Ping’s smile goes a little bigger, a little brighter, as they smile at each other from over their son’s shoulders.

“And you’re not upset?” Ping double checks as soon as they’re set down, worrying at his apron.

“Of course not, this is great!” Po beams at him. He hasn’t stopped beaming since Ping confirmed they were dating. Li bites the inside of his mouth, because if he doesn’t, his smile will stretch too wide. “I told Tigress you guys liked each other.”

“And you were right,” Li says, before Ping can. “We like each other very much.”

“Awesome,” Po says quietly, clearly celebrating, and Li has to hold back a snort. Neither of them should’ve been worried, really.

“So Po, what did you need?” Ping says, cutting back to the meat of Po’s surprise visit.

“Right!” Po looks back at them, smiles giddily, then takes a breath.

Guilty Gear Characters as Monster Hunter Monsters (Part II)

Part I

Wow, I did not expect the reception I got for my first part. Apparently, I have found the fabled niche of legend: the target audience. I also got some neat suggestions, and I'll include a few!

Everything is under the cut, as per usual:

Chipp Zanuff: Tobi-Kadachi or (Silverwind) Nargacuga

The speedy shinobi was going to get some quick monsters to match his brash, quick personality, and the first one is the Tobi-Kadachi with its speed, somersaults, and overall versatility.

I also chose the Tobi-Kadachi for the way that it utilizes static electricity. While Chipp is not usually associated with it, I see the way that it rubs off on its environment to use it to be very like Chipp in how he acts in the spur of the moment.

I also took a page from one of the people who reblogged my previous post and agree with them: the Nargacuga is essentially Chipp.

I went with the Silverwind variant because it has more control over its attacks as well as how hard it can hit. It also has another skill that younger Nargacuga does not: its Wind Cutting White Shadow.

It is also worth noting that the Silverwind Nargacuga is noted to be more aggressive than its younger counterpart, which is very much in line to how Chipp approaches... everything.

Answer: (Ebony) Odogaron or Glavenus

I understand that these monsters are quite aggressive and can definitely pack a punch, but I see Answer as an economically-minded and very efficient man.

As such, the Odogaron is perfect for him because it is built for quick, fatal damage that leaves its victim disoriented and confused as their life leaves them with a karmic quickness.

Two sets of razor-sharp claws each? Lithe, muscle-corded body? Big set of sharp teeth? Yeah, that's a creature that has a very specific purpose.

The Ebony Odogaron takes this a step further by carrying around a piece of meat in its mouth for a quick burst of energy or an additional weapon to be used in its arsenal.

With that being said, the Glavenus literally has a weapon for a tail that it sharpens with its teeth.

The shavings left behind are even conserved in a special sac in its throat that can turn into molten magma that can be spat out as a weapon.

As there's no wastage in any step of the process, I can also confidently apply this monster to Answer.

Queen Dizzy: Alatreon or Garangolm

Look, I know the Alatreon is scary and radiates an energy that has most creatures running away from it, but it's not like Dizzy's power didn't do the same damn thing in the early story, right?

With that being said, I'm going off of the Iceborne Alatreon as it aligns with more of what I mean.

The crown on its head, its control over fire and ice, and the fact that it is described as a "living natural disaster" can all be attributes applied to Dizzy.

However, the Alatreon is not a creature of peace or compassion. It is hell. It is pain. It is death. And so another creature must represent that, which is why I chose the Garangolm.

The Garangolm has an affinity with the plants and around its environment, the sap it emits also promoting growth in said plants.

While it can use fire, water, and ice in its attacks, it is also noted to be mostly docile unless provoked, which falls in line with Dizzy's overall personality.

So in summary, take the Alatreon as a marker of Dizzy's power and the Garangolm as a marker of Dizzy's disposition.

Potemkin: Lao-Shan Lung

I am well aware that Potemkin is an absolute unit, so what other monster could I have picked?

The Lao-Shan Lung is a monster that cares not for the little people around it and only focuses on the clear obstacles in its path.

In this sense, it is very much like Potemkin as his main focus is his objectives and orders given to him by Gabriel.

I also like to think that the Lao-Shan Lung has lived long and has seen much in its time, and in the same sense, Potemkin has been through a lot.

Despite this, as I've said, the Lao-Shan Lung doesn't immediately choose violence and likewise, underneath the muscles and training, Potemkin is a gentle soul that hopes for the best.

Jack-O Valentine: Kecha Wacha or (Blood Orange) Bishaten

These guys are quite goofy in application and style, but they're also quite smart in how they use their respective movesets, however, Jack-O is going to reflect these same traits in various ways.

The Kecha Wacha has a marked curiosity for anything new or interesting in the world around it, preferring to investigate it rather than fight anything, much like Jack-O herself.

The Kecha Wacha also has a myriad of tricks up its sleeves, including a sort of 'mask' that it can wear with its ears, a trunk that can expel water from a distance, long claws that it can use to climb and slash, and glide with the membrane it has around its body.

While the Blood Orange Bishaten is notably more aggressive and violent than the Kecha Wacha, I would say that its utilization of the flaming pinecones it juggles is similar to how Jack-O's minions scatter around and inconvenience her opponents

The Blood Orange Bishaten is also noted to be quite clever and while Jack-O is curious, I will also say that in some instances, she can be quite clever.

If those aren't a bag of tricks to you, I don't know what to tell you.

Ramlethal Valentine: (Crimson Glow) Valstrax or Rathalos

The Valstrax is my favorite Elder Dragon and my favorite monster in Monster Hunter period, and I think that the way it moves jives perfectly with Ramlethal.

The Valstrax's winged limbs can extend to great lengths to hit its opponents and the way it propels itself through the air can be used to levitate and blast its opponents as well.

I chose the Crimson Glow variant as while it is more tortured in a sense, it is also more tied to the ground.

I choose to interpret this as Ramlethal coming down from her perceived purpose as a tool to being a human, boons, banes, and all in the human experience.

It also helps that it is absolutely relentless in the same way that Ramlethal is when she has a task at hand.

In the case of the Rathalos (for the Valentine sisters specifically), I took a little shift and went into creatures that work in tandem.

While the pair of flying wyverns are mates technically, I will go into how they function as a unit as opposed to that aspect.

The Rathalos is more of an aerial unit that is well-equipped to fight anything that comes into its territory. Ramlethal was designed with that specific purpose of combat in mind.

Elphelt Valentine: Espinas or Rathian

While these do seem like weird choices at first, I would like to address her lore for a minute.

Elphelt was made for the specific purpose of infiltration, and as such, went along with life until a very specific moment.

In that moment, the euphoria and joy was so much so that it threw everything out of whack and shocked Elphelt into emotions proper and scrambled her objective.

In that same sense, the programming that was triggered again in the wake of Justice being properly revived caused a litany of damage and ruination.

The Espinas is the definition of the sleeper agent because although mostly passive, once that thing is awake and rightfully pissed off, it is curtains for the poor thing that dared.

It is also funny that the name 'espinas' means 'thorns' in Spanish and every rose is going to have them.

As I've said before, the Ramlethal sisters operate in tandem and as such, the Rathian does more of the job of blending in with its environment with its green hide. Elphelt was made for infiltration.

This does not make it any less dangerous, however, as it can still put up a fight and do a whole lot of damage with its teeth, claws, spikes, and barbed poison tail.

Hey Shan!! IDK if you're planning to do a BL wrap up or superlatives or anything like that this year so this question might be a bit too early but um...what has been a few of your favorite first watches for 2024 bls?

Hi Eboni! This is actually pretty good timing for a list because most of the shows that will end within 2024 are already over! The only two I could see maybe making my list that have not ended yet are Love is Like a Poison (Japan) and Blue Canvas of Youthful Days (China), so I'll mention them here (fingers crossed they end well and stay favs).

That said, here are my favorite completed BLs of 2024 (alpha order)!

At 25:00 in Akasaka (Japan, Gaga)

Two actors who first met in college are cast in a bl together, old feelings resurface, and the lines between their professional and private lives start to blur. This show is super beautiful and moody.

Cooking Crush (Thailand, YouTube or WeTV for uncut)

Ten and Prem are my favorite of OffGun's many couples. Ten is a med student with food issues who wants to learn how to cook, and Prem is a chef in training. Their romance is super sweet and I also really like the side couple and friend groups in this one.

Cherry Magic Thailand (Thailand, YouTube or Viu, requires VPN)

I still can't believe this show happened. How on earth did GMMTV manage to make a superior version of Cherry Magic?? Tay Tawan had a lot to do with it, along with a very smart adaptation. It's so sweet and funny and perfect (if you just pretend ep 8 doesn't exist).

City of Stars (Thailand, iQIYI)

I was surprised by how much I liked this charming little Thai pulp. It had an interesting story with strong writing and the pair was very good together. More people should watch it!

I Became the Main Role of a BL Drama (Japan, Gaga)

This is a short and sweet and note perfect BL comedy about two actors falling for each other while making a BL. Loaded with meta jokes about the industry and stan culture and very loving about it.

Knock Knock Boys (Thailand, Gaga)

I am obsessed with this excellent Thai BL that not nearly enough people watched. Two couples, both compelling and sexy and fun, and amazing friendship dynamics. I want everyone to watch it!

Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo (S Korea, iQIYI)

My top BL of the year. It's a second chance romance, you see the characters both in high school and later as adults and I don't really want to spoil anything else about it. It's beautiful, the characters are so compelling, and the story is masterfully told.

Love for Love's Sake (S Korea, iQIYI)

This one is special and quite unique, and I also don't want to spoil much about it! It begins with a basic isekai set up that then goes to some unexpected places. Really, really beautiful show.

Love Sea (Thailand, iQIYI)

Definitely my favorite spicy romance of the year. I really loved a lot about the story for this one, in particular the class dynamics that defined the characters and their relationship, and Mahasamut (played by Fort) is on my list of favorite drama characters this year.

Marahuyo Project (Philippines, YouTube)

We didn't get much from the Philippines this year, but they did drop one absolute banger in this show about a fierce and proud gay kid who gets booted out of school in Manila and sent to live with his grandma and mother on a small island. He makes friends and enemies and starts an LGBTQ+ club, and falls in love along the way.

Mr Mitsuya's Planned Feeding (Japan, fansub)

An excellent age gap romance about a young editor and the chef who writes for his magazine making food together and falling in love. Lots of fun side characters, too. I loved every minute of this show.

Perfect Propose (Japan, Gaga)

Two old friends meet when one of them is in need of housing and one is on the verge of a nervous breakdown from a soul-sucking corporate job, and help each other heal. This one is short and sweet.

Ossan's Love Returns (Japan, Gaga)

This one is technically a sequel, but you can enjoy it without having seen the original (and might like it better that way, tbh). One of the funniest shows of the year and featuring a main couple that is a personal fav and are now on my ride or die list.

Takara's Treasure (Japan, Gaga)

This one is a simple story but so, so sweet. A cute little bean follows his mysterious idol to university and joins the hiking club to get to know him better. They get to know each other slowly and fall in love.

Unknown (Taiwan, Viki)

ALMOST my favorite bl of the year, but we had a few issues on the back end. Despite that, I still loved it a whole lot. A family drama and a love story about two chosen brothers whose relationship changes over time. Easily the best BL Taiwan made this year.

Looking at this list, I am realizing how absolutely invaluable my Gaga and iQIYI subscriptions have become; it's where nearly all my favorite BL is airing.
