while i loved a great many things about chain of thorns i think Thomas saying “i’m in love with Alastair and am going to spend the rest of my life with him” and his parents being like “???? ok we love you and are glad your happy but damn bitch can we at least meet him first???” takes the cake

Alec: Why did you tell Aldertree you don't know how to read?
Jace: Cause I didn't feel like reading and wanted him to read the report to me. My eyes are tired today.
Alec: You can’t do that.
Jace: Why not?
Alec: Jace, you are 20 years old and an accomplished shadowhunter, how would anyone believe you can't read?
Izzy: If I'm honest, I'm surprised he knows how to tie his shoes.
Jace: Hey, give me some credit. I'm not a complete doofus.
Izzy: You’re afraid of ducks.
Jace: They’re scary!

“Oh—would you rather I put on the bandages or do you want to do it yourself?”
Jonathan’s face was opaque. “I can do it myself. I don’t need anything.”
“Oh,” Alec said unhappily.
Isabelle could not tell if Jonathan’s expressionless face was to ward them off or protect himself, but he was hurt. Alec was still shy with strangers, and Jonathan was a closed-off human being, so they were going to be awkward even though Isabelle could tell they both really liked each other. Isabelle sighed. Boys were hopeless, and she had to take charge of this situation.
“Hold still, idiot,” she ordered Jonathan, seized ointment from Alec’s hands, and began to smear it over Jonathan’s cut. “I am going to be a ministering angel.”

I love the Fairchild Family for how versatile their roles are in TSC
Like we have the Herondales - The main characters/love interests
And the Lightwoods - the supporting leads/best friends
But for the Fairchilds we have:
Charlotte - mentor character/leader
Henry - the scientist/supporting mentor
Charles - the annoyance
Matthew - the best friend/supporting lead
Jocelyn - the mother/rebel
Clary - the main character
Sebastian - the villain
And Ash - TBD (but potential main character and love interest)

CHRISTOPHER LIGHTWOOD DESERVED BETTER
weekly rant about my fav family and the atrocious writing:
I’m rereading chain of thorns and I’m at that part. y’all know the part. where a certain someone should not have died and how unnecessary it was. I like how grace is all like “you can stop this lucie.” bitchhhhh, couldn’t you have said that- hmmm, I don’t know maybe before Tatiana came out? like it’s so unnecessary and I am not here for CC hating the lightwoods and making sure each one from every generation dies.
Max- like what was he, an eleven year old? GONE. poor little boy 😭😭😭
Benedict- ok dude had it coming but he’s still a Lightwood and he died. plus Will makes a joke about it to Gabriel as if it’s not Gabriel’s trauma? the fuck. gabriel deserves better plus he needed more page time!!!! Gabriel and Gideon lost a father but yes, let’s make jests about it.
Kit- poor, sweet Kit. did not deserve to die like that. but of course, she’s not going to kill off any herondales because my god, we couldn’t survive that. can’t have our golden eyed and insufferable boys die. what vexed me most about this is the way CC went about it. I get they’re in this war but someone who is family and is practically family to y’all just died!!! but ok let’s grieve James and Matthew who are very much alive. wouldn’t be a CC book if we didn’t focus on the herondales.
tatiana- deserved it but I did not like how it was Cordelia. it should not have been her who killed her. Gabriel loses a son because of her, Gideon loses a daughter, Anna, Thomas, little Alexander, and Eugenia lose their brother, sister, cousin. literally Thomas loses his best friend who is basically his parabatai and his sister within the same year ish. I’m not sorry because it should not have been Cordelia to kill this wench.
Barbara- poor Barbara 😭 just wanted to marry Oliver but no, guess she’s got to go too. I would have liked to see more of her.
I swear that I do not want Magnus and Alec go adopt another kid if CC is going to kill them off. I know she holds herondales to this high degree but STOP HURTING THE LIGHTWOODS. yes, they are the best characters. without them, the world would probably be doomed. (looking at you jace lol we know you would’ve died without Alec or Izzy.)
adding Robert. he gone too. she even kills all the lightwoods in Thule like what is her obsession with hating this wonderful family? this is why I would rather she stop with the series. these are some of my fav characters but her carelessness and her desire to put one family above everyone else and simply act like nobody else matters is exhausting. as you know, I adore the lightwoods but it’s so draining to see them being treated like this. the only ones who I was glad to see gone was Tatiana and Benedict. you’ll never see her kill off a herondale. Stephen does not count because he wasn’t really introduced, and the other members were barely in stories, just mentioned.
and it’s fine if she has a preference. I love the lightwoods so much but there’s a different with you killing off multiple members of a family and writing out your fav family as untouchable. ahhhh, poor kit. he died and only Thomas and Anna had emotions through it all. we don’t even get to see Gabriel’s or cecilys reaction. what the fuck. I don’t know what CC was feeling writing this but I would have honestly rather she waited until she felt like writing it. it’s not fair what happened to Kit or the family over and over again. I wish she would do better but that’s too high of a hope for CC.

I have a very important question:
Which family line in the present came from Gideon and Sophie??
Like we know that the present Lightwoods came from Cecily and Gabriel's line (bc of Alec's having the original herondale traits: blue eyes and black hair)
But did anyone come from that cause like we know that Thomas was gay and maybe Eugenia followed the line? But if not why are they so remembered that Maryse and Robert named their kids middle names after people from the different branch (Alexander GIDEON & Isabelle SOPHIA)??

there’s a very slight moment where izzy is giggling and tickling and having fun with max and maryse comes in and it’s awkward partly because they’re fighting... but it also seems like Having Fun Is Kinda Discouraged??? whether it’s a Lightwood thing or a Shadowhunters thing, i couldn’t say, but it IS messed up. god bless <3

The Wicked Powers Title Is Talking About The Families.
This is my crazy theory for The Wicked Powers series. This is kind of long so I will put a TLDR at the end of this. So far everyone assumes that the powers refer to either demonic powers with the princes of hell rising or Ash’s and Kit’s powers and connection to the Fae. I have been doing some re-reading of TMI and TID and I think the powers refer to old shadowhunter families.
The first thing that led to this conclusion is how important family trees are now and how much it is being emphasized. Also at the end of TMI, it is very important that Jace picks a family to belong to and he chooses the name that goes with his bloodline. Family names have been important since the beginning and they talk about how there are old and powerful families within the Clave. They are described as rich and hold leadership positions in most of the books. They wear rings that symbolize their families and these rings are always mentioned and significant to the characters.
Second thing is that the development of only a few families have been important throughout the series. Cassie focuses on just a few main families through out the books even though she could have added other ones because there is so much time passing and they are in much different locations. This would have been easier than creating a ton of stories to explain the locations of these families also. This is building to some kind of epic conclusion with the Fairchilds, Herondales, Lightwoods, Blackthorns, Carstairs, and Morgensterns.
Third thing is that all of these families have or a going to have some kind of power beyond typical shadowhunter ability. The Fairchilds have the ability to pull things out of pictures and turn objects into paintings. This hasn’t been mentioned in a while but it is significant in the first series and is revealed to be a family thing because Jocelyn can do it too. It would be interesting if Mathew or Charles did it in TLH. The Herondales are connected to the dead, the see ghosts and talk to them. The Carstairs are connected to weapons and control magical swords. The Lightwoods are connected to demons and the downworlders, even their family crest is connected to them, hell fire. They are always intertwined with them in some way and have relations with them that are closer or more meaningful then characters from other families throughout the books. The next book is about the Blackthorns and Morgensterns so I think their powers will be revealed and then it will lead to some battle involving emblems of some kind or a sort of rune that amplifies these powers and that will defeat the princes of hell in one final battle combining all of the families from the series.
TLDR: I think the powers refer to the powers of the families all of the series before it has focused on. The powers specific to these old and powerful families will be used in a final battle against the Princes of Hell.

Alec: What did you two do?
Izzy:
Jace:
Alec, sighing: You’re not in trouble, I just need to know if I have to lie to the Clave again or not.

“And Nephilim—we tend to love very overwhelmingly. To fall in love only once, to die of grief over love—my old tutor used to say that the Nephilim's hearts were like those of angels: They felt every human pain and never healed.” ― Cassandra Clare, City of Heavenly Fire
