Medieval Name Default Replacement Mod

Version 1.0 current as of September 22nd, 2024

Sul sul, and hail, my fellow medieval gameplay enjoyers! Have you grown tired of scouring the internet for names appropriate for Ultimate Decades Challenge, or the History Challenge, or any other gameplay that includes a medieval time period? Because I sure did, and that's why I got the idea to create this mod for those of us who want to just leave it up to the game to name our sims. And now, I'm so so excited to present it to you now!

If you don't want to read about the mod and just want to skip straight to downloading it, scroll to the very bottom of this post (under the "keep reading")! But if you want to know, I have written up a bit about the mod below.

How does it work?

It's very simple. You download the mod, and put it into your mods folder. Once the mod is in your folder, load up the game. In both CAS, and randomly generated townies, the available names will only be selected from a pool of medieval names.

When in CAS, if you use the die to randomize a name, it will only give you medieval names, like so:

When a townie is randomly generated in town, they will no longer have modern names, like so:

When your sim gives birth to a baby, the random name options will all be appropriately medieval, like so:

Is it compatible only with English?

It should be compatible with every language the game can be installed in, because I made the language "Global," and Miss Chipsa confirmed for me that it worked on a Russian-installed game!

Any details on the names you can provide us?

Well, it would be far too long of a list for me to tell you all of the names, but here are the details I can share - (under the cut)

a little over 3500 female names

a little over 7200 male names

a little over 13,400 surnames/bynames

the date range that these names should be appropriate for is between 800 and 1500, because that is the range that I pulled names from

Indian names replaced by medieval German

1. Who are the Catalans? Where are they?

Catalan people are a cultural group who come from the area known as the Catalan Countries. We speak the Catalan language (a language that descends from Latin) and have a distinct culture (cuisine, traditions, holidays, dances, music, literature, etc) and history since the Middle Ages.

Our nation is the Catalan Countries, located in the coast of the Mediterranean sea, in South-Western Europe.

As a result of past wars and invasions, most of the Catalan Countries are under Spanish rule and a part of it is under French rule (+1 city in Italy). In fact, Spain and France have harshly persecuted, illegalized and tried to exterminate the Catalan language and culture for a long time, well into the 20th century. But Catalan people have survived the ethnocide and we still exist, even though we continue to face discrimination and there are some settings where it's still not legal to speak Catalan (for example, public schools in the French-controlled part, or European Union ambits, among some others).

There is also Catalan diaspora around the world.

We are not a closed culture, we are very open to foreigners learning our language and culture, and the Catalan diaspora often organizes celebrations for our holidays or groups to do traditional activities (most famously the castellers, aka human towers) that everyone can join.

2. Which are the Catalan Countries?

We say the Catalan Countries in plural because it's made of different areas for historical reasons. The Catalan Countries are all the areas where Catalan is the native language, which have historically been part of a whole, and which share a common culture (with local variants, of course). Here they are:

From North to South:

Northern Catalonia. Capital city: Perpinyà. It's under French administration (part of the region Occitanie in the new French regions system, used to be Languedoc-Roussillon in the old one).

Andorra. Capital city: Andorra la Vella. It's an independent microstate.

Catalonia. Capital city: Barcelona. It's under Spanish administration (it's the Catalonia region in the Spanish regions system).

Eastern Strip, also called Aragon Strip. It's under Spanish administration (it's part of the region of Aragon in the Spanish regions system).

Balearic Islands, including Mallorca, Menorca, Eivissa (in English also known as Ibiza) and Formentera. Capital city: Palma. Under Spanish administration (Balearics region in the Spanish regions system).

Valencian Country. Capital city: València. Under Spanish administration (called Valencian Community in the Spanish regions system).

El Carxe. Tiny rural area. Under Spanish administration (part of the Region of Murcia in the Spanish regions system).

3. Where can I learn the Catalan language?

We are thrilled that you want to learn our language. Catalan people love it when others learn our language. Here I'll link you to classes and free online resources.

If you want face-to-face classes outside of the Catalan Countries, you can check this website to find if there's a university that offers Catalan classes near you. There are 101 around Europe, 25 in North America and Cuba, 5 in Asia, and 4 in South America. Students from these courses can also participate in language stays and internships in the Catalan Countries.

If you're already in the Catalan Countries, you will easily find courses for foreigners which the government offers for free or for a cheap price (depending on the level and each person's economic situation). Check out your local CPNL (Consorci per la Normalització Lingüística).

If you want to learn independently on the internet, there are two resources I recommend the most, both are available online for free.

One is the book "Life in Catalonia. Learn Catalan from..." that you can find in various languages. Here I add the link to the official government page where you can legally download the PDFs for free, you only have to scroll down and click under where it says "text complet". You can find the book Learn Catalan from English, from Spanish, from Arabic, from Tamazight, from French, from Hindi, from Urdu, from Punjabi, from Romanian, from Russian, and from Chinese.

The other resource I recommend the most is the online course Parla.cat. It has different levels for beginners or advanced learners. You have to create an account (it asks for an official document number, don't worry about it, it's not a sketchy site, it's because it's an official course paid by the government of Catalonia and if you immigrated to Catalonia having taken this course would officially count as a language course and can give you some benefits). You can either use it for free (all the learning material is available in the free version) or you can use the paying version. In the paid version, you will get assigned a language teacher from Catalonia who can help you and correct you.

l'manburg language headcanons

okay so i havent sat down and actually created a language for lmanburg but I hc that they have their own language & here are hcs for that language. its a mashup of all the languages that the members speak. i know that a language couldn't really develop in the timeframe so I'm speeding up the development because i want to.

Slang / Phrases

first, it exists withing minecraft, so internet/minecraft lingo and phrases are commonplace (ie: pots, spawn, etc)

l'manburg was born out of conflict, so many phrases and slang are often violent.

because many prolific figures (c!tommy with prime, c!wilbur with being phil's son, c!eret with the herobrine stuff, c!dream with the XD stuff) are heavily religous / associated with religion, religious phrases are also very common.

there are different words for non-canon death, a canon death, and the last canonical death (the one that kills kills you)

Actual Language

l'manburg's language is a mix of british english, french, dutch, spanish, german, latin, and ancient greek. because it is such a new language, some words are the exact same as the English (given that english is the common language) words.

all military/war words have absolutely no english ties (as to provide secrecy). most are a mix of french, latin, and ancient greek (latin and ancient greek comes from c!tommy & c!wilbur, because they were taught by c!techno)

words pertaining nationality, home, or base are a mix of french (l'-), german (-manburg), and dutch (man). Most are french.

words pertaining to money or commerce are dutch & english inspired.

words pertaining to farming are inspired by ancient greek (c!techno again)

words pertaining to government/high authority are often a mix of latin, french, and english (c!wilbur is fucking obsessed with french & latin)

anything related to food is inspired by german and ancient greek.

Context / Timeline

quackity's arrival made spanish inspired words/phrases more abundant.

schlatt made american phrases and spellings very common.

the manburg administration attempted to phase out the language, but was unsuccessful.

new lmanburg caused many more phrases based on death, nature, rot, and renewal.

new lmanburg put a lot of emphasis on philosophical, poetic, descriptive, and physiological words.

words regarding cops, police, and laws are closely tied with negative words such as evil, thief, and traitor.

manburg replaced many religious words and phrases with more neutral alternatives.

the first words created in the new language were military moves and tools.

new lmanburg's descriptive words were often enderian words translated into the latin alphabet (as c!ranboo, the minute man, was the one who used and created them)

lmanburg was often underdeveloped in governmental words pertaining to the running of a country.

World building headcanon time!

There are three main languages among the three realms (we aren't counting the various human languages. We're talking what sorcerers use to communicate with other beings)

Devildom: Demonic

Celestial Realm: Angelic/Celestial

Sorcerers: Common

I will talk in depth about all of them

Demonic

Demonic is the language of demons, but it has differing words and accents depending on where you're from. There's one for each ring and one for the royals.

The sound of Demonic is very rough sounding. If it were a human language, it would be like Russian or Slovak because most words sound harsh or angry. Demonic is comprised of hissed and growls and clicks, because in the age of Savagery (before Diavolo's father's rule) they were mostly sin creatures who did nothing but attack and tempt others.

Demonic gives you a mostly American sounding accent for many variations when speaking Common, though older demons have a more Russian sounding accent (looking at you Barb) due to changes in the language.

Celestial

Celestial/Angelic is the language of angels. It used to be called Angelic, but when Heaven was changed to the Celestial Realm to be more accommodating to non-christian souls, so was the language. Celestial has different accents based on age and what you were trained as.

The sound of Celestial is very romantic. Their words slide and blend together in a way that sounds beautiful but is also very hard to learn and speak. If it were a human language, I'd say it would be similar to Spanish, French, Latin, any of the romantic languages. It's where many ancient human languages stemmed from.

Celestial can give you many different accents when speaking Common. Most of the archangels, including Lucifer, have a more stereotypical British accent to their words while guards such as Beel have an almost Australian tint to it. Mammon got his accent from Michael, who has his own special variant of Celestial due to... reasons according to my universe, but has since changed his accent to be more stereotypical English.

Common

The most boring of all the languages, Common is what most beings have to learn to communicate. Most of the brothers didn't bother learning it until the fall (only Lucifer and Mammon could speak it fluently).

It's also referred to as the language of sorcerers and was created by King Solomon the Wise (while collaborating with Barbatos) so all three realms could easily communicate without translators (though the archangels do still prefer translators bc some of them think they're better than everyone. Frigg's day

Friday comes from Old English Frīġedæġ, literally 'day of Frīġ', the Germanic goddess of love. Frīġedæġ stemmed from West Germanic *Frījā dag, a loan translation of Latin Veneris diēs (which became venerdì in Italian, vendredi in French, and viernes in Spanish). The West Germanic peoples equated the Roman goddess Venus with their *Frīju. Listen to how the day name evolved.

Frigg and Freyja

The Old Norse counterpart of *Frīju was Frigg. Both names stem from Proto-Germanic *Frijjō, a derivation of the adjective *frijaz ('beloved; free'), the ancestor of free. The word friend is also related: it comes from *frijōndz ('loving one').

*Frijjō became Frigg in Old Norse because of a sound change that turned /jj/ (a long y sound, as in hay-yield) into /gg/ (as in egg group). Compare *ajjan > egg, which was borrowed into English and supplanted native ey.

The names *Frīju and Frigg are often confused with Old Norse Freyja, but these words aren't etymologically related in any way. Freyja stems from Proto-Germanic *frawjōn ('lady'), a word that became Frau in German, vrouw in Dutch, and frou in Frisian. In the Middle Ages, these West Germanic words still meant 'lady' but they've now become the default word for 'woman'.

Cognates

*Frījā dag became frīatag in Old High German and Freitag in the modern language. Middle Dutch had both vriëndach (with a secondary genitive ending -en) and vridach, which became vrijdag. Old Frisian had multiple forms: frīadei, frīdei, and frēde, the latter being the ancestor of modern freed.

The West Germanic name *Frījā dag was borrowed and calqued into Old Norse. A borrowed form is frjádagr, whence the modern forms, such as Swedish fredag and Icelandic frjádagur.The form friggjardagr, with the native genitive of Frigg, is a calque: a loan translation. There was even freyjudagr, which is interesting in the light of the identity of Frigg and Freyja.

due to many factors, i have decided to leave the United States once it becomes feasible, and i want some suggestions on safe places. ultimately, nowhere will be completely safe, but ideally somewhere with either low*er* rates of antisemitic violence, robust legal protection of jews specifically, low rates of violence in general, and ease of migration. (also, preferably a decently sized jewish population)

i am going into cybersecurity and speak english, spanish, french, ASL, and japanese; and am currently learning german, hebrew, and mandarin

my research is going fairly poorly due to a lack of recent (post-october 7th) studies beyond anecdotes.

my thoughts and research so far:

Arguments against giving personifications a universal language (or another method of communicating with each other immediately and without any problem)

(Ok, this was a little clickbaity. First of all, I absolutely don’t intend to say that whoever does it is wrong. Like everything in Hetalia worldbuilding, it’s a matter of personal preference and goals we set for our story. Additionally I absolutely think that heavy focus on this matter would be detrimental for the story and unapproachable by audience other than a couple of crazy linguists.

Unfortunately I happen to be a crazy linguist, so here’s what I actually mean by this post:)

Fun linguistic things to consider in the context of Hetalia :D

Now, personally, I feel like the universal language takes away from the naturality of their relationships, *especially* so-called “first contact”, but not only that. Language is an enormous part of international relationships through the ages and removing this part from the equation results in the personifications not experiencing this side of their people’s history.

Sometimes in a story you don’t want two nations to understand each other. It happens. I’d much rather have choice than create a rule that takes this possibility from me.

The question of “which languages these two characters share” is interesting; it silently reminds of their history and points to cultural circles they belong to, as a subtle storytelling tool. (Other than that, deciding that is insanely fun, but this might be a linguist thing?)

Languages can be symbolic for other details of relationships. Think Lithuania speaking outdated Polish, from 19th century at best, because he didn’t have many opportunities to catch-up with the living language after that, now they’re not together with Poland anymore. [/personal hc, but even if they were, I think he’d still lag behind].

Another case, think a weaker country speaking the language of the stronger country, never the other way around, indicating a power imbalance between them.

Think a weaker country [personally I’m thinking a friend’s Serbia] absolutely refusing to speak the language of the stronger country, forcing them to seek compromises or use an interpreter or more drastic measures.

The lingua franca, whatever it would be, automatically carries a huge cultural and social influence with it. I believe the personifications should be prone to it too.

Another linguist thing, but I find communication struggles fascinating and endearing. There’s so much cultural exchange to be drawn from a second language user: which parts of learning are difficult for them, which are easy; what mistakes they make and how are these influenced by their native speech; what words do they choose to use, what do they think a chair’s gender is, do they sound soft or harsh or have an accent? If two Slavs talk to each other in English, is it correct English or do they use Slavic pronunciation and grammar to make it easier for themselves, causing a distress for each anglophone that hears them?

Another linguist thing, but a lot of pairs of countries that technically don’t have a common language can probably communicate with ease anyway. I want to see them go wild. I want to see them make a mixtape out of their French and Latin to talk to an Italian, I want distant Asian countries to talk to each other in English that no actual English person would understand, I want to see Latin America NOT understanding each other despite theoretically all speaking Spanish. And I want to see two distant countries find out that their only common language is something completely unexpected they’ve studied out of boredom.

I want to see the poor couple of nations without decent linguistic skills SUFFER.

Some of you speak like not having a common language was an unconquerable obstacle that would destroy all the fun and be a giant problem in the storyline. But I don’t really see how? Our ancestors did it. They travelled, they met other nations and they had to learn how to communicate with them. Some of them saw the opposite thing happen: they used to understand their neighbours without problem, but as the nations found themselves under different influences, the languages drifted away from each other until the similarities became unrecognizable. People across the ages have been learning languages, travelling and communicating. There are teachers, translators (my friend Laurynas says he’d like to see translators acknowledged), interpreters, etymology, lingua franca and body language all for them to use. I am not 25 yet and I speak 4, with a certain pain I can communicate in 6, and I could probably visit 100 countries of the world without worrying about the language issue at all. My nations are 100 years old. I just don’t think they need additional help. They'll slay :D

There were a couple ideas I’ve seen pro-universal language that I liked, so thought I’d share:

One, as beetroot said, being able to communicate with one personification doesn’t mean the countries wouldn’t have to learn languages, as the rest of the society wouldn’t be able to understand it. Therefore, most of these “fun linguist things” would appear anyway, just not between personifications. For me it’s a bummer, although acceptable. For someone else it can be more than enough.

Two, a quote from my friend Huku:

“Universal language is also a thing that helps them identify each other, which is a cool trick. It explains why, upon finding a personification in a swamp, the nation knows that this child is a personification and not some random mortal. Besides, nations from distant cultures also find it hard to communicate initially, because maybe the language is universal, but the context is foreign, the metaphors unreadable, the wording strange.”

Three, at first I didn't like morgenlich’s version that the language “can’t be written down because of magic”, but after seeing a suggestion that it wouldn’t be an actual language, just a mysterious way of understanding each other, the idea sounds more approachable to me. Cheers!

But for the actual question, so, I'm a new frev enjoyer, and I've been trying to look everywhere on the internet for the answer to a simple question that i seemingly can't find. What languages could Maximilien De Robespierre speak (beside french)? I swear, I've searched in every corner of the web and EVEN ASKED REDDIT AND QUORA??? I assume he understood Latin, since he studied law, but what about other popular languages, like Italian or Spanish? I don't know. You're absolutely right about Latin - anyone who received even a basic education in the 1700s would have at least a basic grasp of the language. Couldn't really do much without it! With someone like Robespierre, one can assume he would be pretty much fluent in Latin, or at least in reading Latin texts.

The only evidence for any other language he would have some knowledge of that I was able to find was not Italian or Spanish but Greek! Again, for the reason that it was very much a part of the classical education of that era.

I have to say I'm not quite sure about any modern languages! I would be leaning towards no. For instance I'd say that unlike some of the other revolutionaries like Jean-Paul Marat (or Voltaire and Émilie, who apparently learnt English in a matter of months), he wouldn't be able to speak English. I'm not hundred percent sure about Spanish or Italian though, as they are closer to French and therefore arguably easier to learn for a native French speaker.

since you asked me this question for wincest wednesday...what are YOUR headcanons on the boys' knowledge of languages? :o

YES THANK YOU!!!!!! :) i love talking about languages and supernatural and languages in supernatural

so when i first watched through the show, i actually had a pretty extensive list of languages i thought they would have reasonably acquired some knowledge on:

classical languages (latin, classical greek)

native north american languages (particularly of the siouan and uto-aztecan variety, and navajo, all for geographical reasons)

some modern italic languages (spanish, french, italian, etc), maybe less so modern germanic languages

some old norse (mainly via the two eddas)

some japanese, picked up later in the series and mostly by dean (to honor bobby's memory)

some other ancient or dead languages (aramaic, sumerian, old english, etc)

a very small spattering of enochian, whatever is available for humans to learn

american sign language (sam only)

my reasoning for this was for practical reasons: these are the languages of the cultures that the monsters they hunt originate from, and so the lore is going to be accessible only or predominantly through those languages. especially later in the series, you see them interacting with non-english texts quite often (whether or not they know the languages in question is up to that episode writer's whims, i guess, continuity be damned). i also like the interpretation of both sam and dean as being highly self-educated, and since they're both rather serious about hunting, this would be a natural extension of the knowledge they'd need to acquire to actually excel in their work. for this headcanon, i really like dean being more practical in his knowledge of languages and sam being more academic because it aligns with their areas of specialty in hunting :3

HOWEVER, when i started my rewatch, i also watched the pilot commentary with eric kripke, and he said something very striking to me:

Blue collar, low tech guys and their weaponry should be blue collar, greasy, worn down. It's always been really important to me. I'm mean—I'm just—I'm from a small town in Ohio, and you know, it's always been important to me that these guys just be, you know, Motorheads... and... love classic rock... and know how to handle a chainsaw, and that was to me, more interesting than—spells and magic. And... even to this day in the writer's room they always bring that stuff up, and I'm always like, 'Forget it! Where are the chainsaws?'

it's very obvious in the final product that this was the intention of course, and as i continued to watch i kept this vision in mind. there are three things that have stood out to me since then:

in 1x04, sam tells dean that "christo" is latin for god. it's actually greek (for christ, not god), and it would also be in the wrong declension, which could imply that sam actually isn't really familiar with greek or latin. this could imply that sam is actually just parroting something he's been told in the past (probably by john), without actually knowing it himself

in 2x04, dean flips through a book in ancient greek, and later when they dig up angela's coffin, they find more greek lettering on the inside. dean calls the letters "symbols" which could imply he's not familiar enough with greek to even know what kind of writing system it has, or to recognize greek writing for what it is. sam, too, seems equally baffled at the "symbols"

in 5x05, sam interviews a hispanic woman in somewhat awkward spanish. when dean asks about it, sam replies "freshman spanish," meaning he hasn't learned beyond a freshman, introductory level of the language, and that he learned it through formal education rather than on his own

these moments are super important to me because they really cut through the idea that sam and dean have extensive or even moderate training in foreign languages. instead, they paint the picture of rather sheltered kids who were largely kept away from the world or only limited in their exposure. i imagine, from this, that john was the one who did most of the research on their hunts, and if sam or dean participated they were relegated to controlled, prescribed roles. especially from the 1x04 example, i can extrapolate that they probably haven't examined the information they've been given too deeply; it implies a level of blind trust in john's skill, to the extent that sam isn't even aware of what language he's speaking in to reveal a demon.

as a result my most up-to-date headcanon is that sam and dean both grew up entirely monolingual, and that they didn't actually even start acquiring new languages (sam's freshman spanish exempted) until their network was cut out from under them (bobby's death and then garth's disappearance) and they found the bunker, with its myriad resources to research and study and its stability to house a library for those purposes. before then, i can see them picking up on very minor latin, like a few words here and there, but not actively pursuing any of this learning until they were forced to learn it themselves. what languages they know or how deep their knowledge goes is wildly contradictory in canon so that means i can do whatever i want, which is exactly the point where i wrap back around into my initial headcanon and start adding those languages back into their bunker era repertoire of skills.

(for the record i do generally have opinions about how much they each know of each of those languages and where their strengths in language learning lie, because i think WAY too much about this)

to my own dismay (as a lover of languages and linguistics), i've found this interpretation to be much more in-line with kripke's vision of the show, whether or not the more subtle details were intentional or not (seriously, who on the set of this show decided on "christo," i NEED to know). It also gives an interesting dimension to their early life as being highly sheltered and isolated and kept away from the hunting life while simultaneously being inescapably part of it.

this is a really long way of saying "monolinguals," but in my defense i've been building this interpretation and headcanon for nearly a year straight now. because i pay way too much undue attention to the use of language in supernatural.

 I am a Cancer and INFJ (4W5) girl. I’m average height (160 cm), I have long wavy brown hair with a fringe haircut and green eyes. I love to wear dresses but because of my lack of self-confidence I don’t do it as much as I would like. I am a big fan of gothic and steampunk clothes but same, I don’t wear it as much as I would like. 

I am really shy, introverted, I lack self-confidence and I often depreciate myself. But I try my best to make friends and have social interactions. I am also hypersensitive and very touchy. I have a depressed side and I suffer from anxiety. My friends told me that I’m stubborn and I know that I am a very jealous person. I have a lot of empathy and compassion. I am a dedicated, faithful, persevering, perfectionist  and passionate person. I am hardworking and dedicated a lot of time to my studies.

I try to be the most supportive I can with my friends but I don’t confess easily what I feel or think, and I don’t talk a lot in a group (sometimes not at all). If someone hurts me, even unintentionally, I can’t tell it to the person. I am resentful but don’t show it, so people don’t know if they hurted me or not and why. I suffered from school harassment and because of this I always want to please everyone and I find it hard to say “no”. My lack of self confidence comes from there.

I love and I am passionate about a looooot of things ! Like Japan, old Egypt, old Scandinavia, animals (I am passionate about wolves, and I have been riding horses for 14 years),fantasy worlds, geek culture, writing, reading books / mangas and watching animes / movies, and playing video games (almost only Pokemon). And  I’m a dragon lover (One of my favorite TV show is Game Of Thrones and House of Dragons). I love art, mythology, esotericism (I love playing with Oracles, Tarots, Runes and learn about paganism), ancient history, listening to music (I listen to a lot of music everyday), and going out to visit museums, castles, cultural places, and walk in forests or beaches, etc. (and I love many other things lol !). I love a lot of languages (I learned Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, English and Latin and want to learn Norwegian and old norse). 

I have never been in a relationship but I think I am a romantic, affectionate and attentive person and dedicated to my loved one. I’m the type of person who wants to have the same partner all their life. I know I constantly need reassurance because of my lack of self-confidence. I am not a tactile person but I think I can be very tactile with a partner. I want someone who understands and respects me, and who loves the same things as me.

Connor Stoll (aka my son)

Off to a great start here.

So, Connor Stoll, cabin 11 (claimed), sole counselor as of TOA.

Now, to start us off, identity headcanons:

Connor's non-binary (they/them), AFAB.

so when Connor was four, they got to camp (unrelated but Travis was 6), and although they had. no clue about their identity-- still was cis girl presenting, their hair was short because it's travis and connor. they're always doing some crazy shit. so, just as they got to camp, someone misheard connor or something, and just assumed their name was connor. No, their deadname isn't anything close to connor.

but as travis was about to correct them, connor was like, no, no, trav, i like this. i'm a boy?

and neither of them know what transgenderism is at this point but they just go, okay guess connor's a boy, whatever

anyway, they sorta start questioning that just battle of the labyrinth

and then after the battle they came out to everyone

also, connor is asexual. very sex-repulsed when they were younger, is now willing to make a dirty joke or two when it suits them. romantic orientation wise? doesn't know, doesn't care. if you ask them, they'll start thinking, and then get distracted by something completely different.

Random facts:

Connor isn't dyslexic. They joke it's because Travis got double the dyslexia. In actuality, Hermes kids are the least likely to be dyslexic because Hermes being a travel god means that his kids tend to be pretty good at picking up languages, including written english.

In the same vein, Connor knows A LOT of languages. Obviously english and ancient greek, Connor also learnt Latin (before HoO), French, Spanish, Mandarin, Japanese, Swahili, and was brought up knowing basic gaelic terms.

Because yeah, Connor's scottish. more getting into their pre-camp story in a sec.

Connor's main friend group is Drew Tanaka and Malcolm Pace, because they're all around the same age. Connor and Drew knew each other for years before Malcolm, getting to know each other at four/five from camp, and Malcolm came when they were ten.

(Connor also has feelings for Malcolm)

Connor's also pretty close with Will, Cecil, and Lou Ellen because again, they're all year-rounders, and came to camp pre-Luke's betrayal.

Connor's birthday is April fool's day.

Connor has one of the only complete records of the titan war. they wrote it all down while it was happening-- complete notes of counselor's meetings, missions, attack plans-- lists of traitors and known allies, and, of course, lists of the dead.

Connor loves to read-- fantasy, specifically, and adventure.

They're always cold. It's not medical or anything, they're just. always cold.

Also, even though pretty much everything in Hermes cabin is communal, connor somehow manages to own even less than everyone else? they love stealing clothes from family and friends (yeah,,, clarisse isn't as fond of that one)

Connor (and Malcolm) have found complete tunnel systems and rooms around camp halfblood. Closer to the surface than the labyrinth, you can frequently find Connor there.

Pre-Camp

okay, so as i've mentioned before, Connor's scottish.

well, they lived in scotland from birth to age four (at which a point they moved to camp). I think they lived around Edinburgh, because mama stoll enjoys robbing the posh idiots in her free time, but originally the family is from the highlands.

so, the Stoll mother,,, Robin Stoll. (Robbing, because,,, yeah) I just think they're a punny family. It isn't intentional, it just is. (yeah i know i'm not as funny as I think i am).

Anyway, Robin, contrary to what you might think, had never stolen anything when she first attracted hermes. she was just a killer postwoman. she was kind to the kids on her route, who all loved her, and always had smiles and treats for the dogs, etc. Hermes was porch pirating something when they first met, and she chased him off.

of course, after attracting hermes the first time she started porch pirating, and leaving travis at home with her mother in the hopes of another glimpse of him. this eventually attracted hermes again, resulting in connor.

following that, porch pirating wasn't working to attract hermes anymore so she decided to leave the kids at home, and start robbing banks. this never did attract hermes, but the two children at home did-- travis and connor started playing with a computer one day, attracting monsters to their doorstep. although both lived, robin's mother died in the attack, and robin, forced to return home, resented the kids for her mother's death.

for a final heist, she planned to steal the queen of england's crown jewel. hermes appeared beforehand, begging her to stop--

she asked if he'd stay if she didn't.

he said no.

she never asked if he'd stay if she did.

that answer would have been no too.

so robin went off, and hermes took the kids to camp.

robin wouldn't be seen again, by hermes or her children.

I have indeed forgotten the specific questions to this ask game HOWEVER. I can always offer more Janet headcanons even if they’re horrendously late

Picks up languages insanely well, is fluent in English, French, Spanish, Latin, Japanese, Cantonese, and Standard Arabic, amongst others (+she learnt Greek for Helena when she was deciding where to specialise in) - also related to that is another bit, but I’ll put that under the cut bc it’ll be kind of a spoiler for an upcoming eggd spinoff

helena helped her bleach her hair in the school bathrooms

while she wasn’t incredibly well off growing up, her mum did know a lot of people, so she got lessons in horse riding, fencing, and gymnastics

she was a competitive swimmer up until fifteen when it started to clash with her riding lessons, but she kept it up casually

jack’s sweaters would go missing a lot in highschool. On an unrelated note, Janet had a section of her wardrobe dedicated just to sweaters

in kindergarten the teachers were worried she was deaf but turns out she just wasn’t interested in speaking or listening to anyone bc she mostly spoke French at home and wasn’t bothered to switch to English

(this one’s kind of a loose interpretation of what a headcanon is ngl) I made her birthday December 24th bc it’s one of the only dates associated with her

knew Tim was Robin the whole time, didn’t have the heart to tell him he was being so obvious (though she did wonder how he never questioned how his uniform got washed)

has amazing hand eye coordination when it comes to anything but baseball, where she instantly forgets how to use every limb she has

whenever she’s bored she gets Helena to throw a dart at a piece of paper with different courses written on it and then she’ll try to speedrun the course chosen. She’s a qualified plumber.

used to think she was allergic to chives but turns out she was just so convinced of this that she managed to placebo herself into having a reaction

Picking up from the languages - when she’s transported to the future and meets Meloni, she figures out interglac in a couple of days. She’s still fluent and Bart was not prepared for Tim’s mum to start asking him how his mum was doing in a language that wasn’t going to exist for another few centuries

hi! I saw this post of yours and i'm a little curious how is jannik's german? i read about how his native language is actually closer to bavarian and when he speaks german in interviews, it's not his "real/native" german, but he speaks standard german in those interviews. so i'm curious is south tyrol dialect really closer/more similar to bavarian? his linguistic situation is so fascinating the boy speaks like 4 languages on a daily basis 😅

Hello hello, thank you for sending this question my never finished linguistics / teacher degree finally is coming in handy again (just kidding its actually not that complicated) so the area in South Tyrol Jannik is coming from belongs to the German speaking part. German is the official first language there and 95% are speaking it as their first language. The schools there are following the German/Austrian model so in primary school you only learn German. (These days English should be a standard at least from third grade as well) and then later they add Italian normally at grade 6 so around age 12 but I guess you also can choose to take up French Latin or Spanish as it would be the norm in Germany and Austria (the German systems requires two additional languages)

Jannik lived in Sexten/Innichen until he was 13 so he didn't spoke any Italian at that point growing up with only speaking German.

For the question if he speaks proper German the answer is Jain (the German mix word for yes and no) he definitely learned to read and write Hochdeutsch (grammatically correct German) but the dialekt in his area is strong. So yes the comparison with Austia or Bavaria is fitting and I would say je definitely is closer to Austrian what makes sense since it's geographically closer.

These days his German is getting a bit wobbly so he has to concentrate more and makes some mistakes but thats just natural with him mostly communicating in Italian and English for the last ten years. Also speaking from experience your brain sometimes just cand distinguish between the languages anymore when you speak more than three. He also is trying hard to stick to Hochdeutsch when giving interviews in German besides in Vienna last year where he basically just was like well why even bother.

Funnily enough is that with that combination of languages he also has some basic understanding of of course Spanish and there are similarities with German/English in the Dutch language but as someone from an area that went through both rounds of the big vowel shifts it will be a bit harder (i am from the north so its easy for me because our dialekt is close to Dutch and the Scandinavian languages)

Another fun fact is that people from the German part of south Tyrol Austria and Bavaria are all still easily to understand by Germans but i yet have to met someone who has an easy way with swiss German.
