what IS the hero unmasked

'The Hero Unmasked', by Christopher Huang, is the CoG fic that got me into writing Interactive Fiction. While not my first CoG game (that would be 'Choice of the Pirate') it is the story that really struck a chord with me.

It's a superhero fic in which you find out that your identical twin is the local superhero, and, whoops, they've been kidnapped, everyone thinking it's you. So you have to take their place as superhero, find out who kidnapped them, how and why, and all that within the next 2 1/2 weeks, as you are scheduled to marry the mayor.

Is it a perfect story? Not necessarily, but it comes close for me. It has memorable characters, fun choices, and it was the first CoG I played where I felt my choices actually matter AND where failing does not equal Game Over. In fact, it was the first game where i felt I'm even being rewarded for messing up spectacularly.

Sandman, horrified as he’s the only one with a kid and dad instincts(as of my iteration): I could’ve killed a kid…

Shocker, genuinely curious: Are you even old enough to drink? Cruel to kill a man who ain’t had his first drink yet.

Electro: Please tell us you’re at least over 25 as of this fight. Hell, I’ll take over 21!

Spider-Man:….

Sandman, realizing just how young he really is: Oh my god.

Spider-Man: My birthday’s coming up soon so I guess it counts?

Doc Ock, exacerbated: It. Does. Not!

Vulture: What would your mother think if she knew her son was out here risking his life telling poorly constructed jokes?

Spider-Man, offended cause it quips slap: 1. My jokes are great 2. She and my dad are dead so-

Do you think after they switch back Scott takes jimmy ‘back’ in subtle ways after he’s back? Even possibly starting as hanging out, or even offering jimmy a ‘new job’, like, slowly bringing him back under? ( just so he doesn’t hurt jimmy mentally,,,)

Jimmy doesn't notice how he's hanging out with Scott more and more, sausage and joell less and less. Jimmy doesn't notice how Owen and Scott give eachother sly knowing looks behind his back. He doesn't think twice about this job Scott offers him, he doesn't think too hard why they have to wear disguises and call eachother new names.

It's fine, he's doing this willingly. It's fine, I mean Scott says it's fine so it's good right?

If you've been following me for any length of time you'll've seen me mention more'n once that, often when looking for inspiration for the next cartoon's gagwriting, I will look to the spreadsheet where I track the existing gags' chronology and see what's the biggest chronological gap to fill. Most recently I've been rotating through the eras of the Doctor's incarnations irregularly instead of filling the biggest gap overall every time, because some eras are overrepresented and the others need to be manually favored.

I have a gap I've been skipping over for days ever since the summer hiatus started because I keep thinking instead of gags which don't fit there chronologically. I don't always do this but sometimes, when I calculate what's the next gap to fill, I change my laptop's background to the two figures from the relevant frame of the animated final panel of this Three Faces as a reminder of what period I'm working on. I decided to start doing that again this spring and for two weeks I've been looking at Captain Archer and the war Doctor* every time all my windows are minimized.

This morning I got up and I said to myself, "I'm gonna write something to fill that nusternucking gap before I even get on with my morning internet routine" and I did. And I think it's a really clever gag (it's derived from a gag I drew for my first website - initially I was saying "hey there's this old one I could steal from myself" - but this version is more/better developed, with a visual gag added onto the pun). And at first I was going to write about the experience here, and then I wasn't going to say anything because the comic strip's just going into the fall buffer and you won't see it for three or four months, but you know what, no: I said to myself "by damn I'm going to do this right now" and then I did it right then** and that's worth celebrating.

*The gag I ultimately wrote has the Doctor in it but not Archer. The reminder is about what chronology point I want to write for, not necessarily which characters. **Well, I conceived, scripted, lettered, and HTMLed it this morning - the word-making parts that nag you to get them down right away before you forget - but I put off drawing it, the fun part, till this afternoon

grian (supervillain) hearing that other villains have created the perfect trap to unmask the city’s superhero (scar), so he creates the most elaborate thing to keep scar busy while he impersonates him… so that grian is unmasked as the hero and can keep scar safe <3

Yes! Some of the ROs have double identities, some of them are heroic, you don't know exactly which ones or who it is (yet) but you'll find out along the way!

I've changed my mind about drawing the mustache Doctor in a different outfit every time he appears in The Hero of Three Faces. I just like the look too much of [the triangle version of] the outfit he wore in most of The Church on Ruby Road, the red leather jacket and the striped shirt, for no reason I can name. There are already in the Three Faces archive several instances of him in the checked outfit from the first publicity picture*, and there're one or two where he's in the shirt from the last scene in Church instead of the orange and blue one, and there's even one with the eighteenth century outfit from Rogue. But right now I expect, most of the time from now on, I'll default to the Church outfit (unless maybe it starts getting really obviously out of character for him to have a default outfit).

* From one shot in Church! What's up with that. Why was the first in-costume publicity photo an outfit he wears (for all we know so far) for fifteen seconds
