Portable Halo Heater

Dean and Cas are hiking up an icy mountain for a case and Dean won't stop grumbling about how cold he is. They hadn't expected to have to go that far up, and Cas is genuinely concerned because he can't feel the cold but Dean can.

At first Dean provides a constant stream of complaining about the snow and how he can't feel his fingers, until he's shivering too hard to keep talking - even to complain.

Cas immediately tells Dean to stop walking and reaches over to pull off his gloves. (Dean is too surprised to protest more than a shocked 'Hey-! What're you-?') Cas positions Dean's hands out in front of him, palms up, and locks eyes with him. He's wearing an expression that Dean knows very well - 'trust me' Cas is saying, without saying a word.

Dean nods.

Cas takes a deep breath, closes his eyes, and reaches up over his head to where a bright ring of light flickers into existence. He plucks it out of the air accompanied by a crackling sound and a slight burning smell, and places it in Dean's outstretched palms.

He trusts Cas so implicitly he doesn't even flinch.

The moment the ring touches Dean's skin warmth rushes through his entire body and he stops feeling the cold. The light itself feels almost solid, like someone's mixed warm custard and smoke. (Cas frowns later at that analogy.)

Cas's halo (it feels strange to acknowledge that's what the ring is) feels like it has a pulse, gripped tight in Dean's hands. It's so bright it looks like it should be too hot to touch, but it's comfortably warm to handle. Dean runs a fingertip along the strangely almost-solid edge and he's sure there's a colour to Cas's nose and cheeks that hadn't been there before, that has nothing to do with the cold.

When it comes time for Cas to have his halo back Dean stands close and pops it back into the air above his head, where it was plucked from in the first place. It pings back into place like a magnet and flickers a few times before it disappears into whatever dimension it usually sits in.

Cas makes Dean promise to never mention it to anyone.

A week later Sam walks into the bunker kitchen and flicks his gaze between the brightly glowing halo on the counter, Dean making smores over it, and Cas sat nearby watching him with an expression of fond exasperation.

He turns back around.

Thinking about the time that where I stayed up to 3 am shitposting on Twitter and came up with the world's dumbest ship name and now nearly 15 years later it's still used and some of the VA's of the show have mentioned it.

It was Red V Blue with Agent Carolina and Washington.

I said they should be named CarWash.

If you saw my Theta render I mentioned that I had been working on a prior 2D-style render. This is it. It's the same shader I used for Theta just without the lineart attempt (the environment and then Carolina and then York in this image were the first time I used that shader!)

Random unnecessary explanations (not in any particular order): When coming up for my internal premise for the image I imagined it as them relaxing in the better days of Freelancer, so prior to the AI debacles and therefore no Agent Texas but yes Agent Georgia. Known for failing to use his jetpack, I thought it'd be funny to have him hanging from the air. Connecticut the traitor is in a bit of a sneakier pose, Wyoming the sniper is prone, Carolina I tried to portray as a bit cocky and I put York as chill and next to her. North I tried to make relaxed while South I made intentionally taking up her entire side of the staircase if anyone was trying to walk down it. Washington was kinda the standard rifleman of the squad so I made him have a pretty basic pose, and then I positioned Maine and Florida last to just kinda fill the rest of the space. Maine I kept stiffer and Florida I made looser.

Note that due to the texture of the Halo 3 visors having a smudge in the corner, the shader made it look like all of them have a bit ol crack or dent there lol. Kinda fit York, but not the rest. Maybe at some point I'll figure out how to workaround that while still keeping the grey details on the rest of the visor.
