Lately I'm seeing tumblr fandom "history" posts about IASIP by emberphantom and sunnyontheside and it's showing a curiosity in me I didn't know I had about this topic. Can you also share about the older Sunny fandom from what you know? I'm only joining since the podcast started so I don't know about the changes. (Sorry if I sound rude, English is not my first lang)

I was on sunnyblr the first time around 2014/2015. There were very few active sunnyblr blogs at the time and the show was only up through season 9 so less content to discuss. It was like 10 of us passing around insanity. I remember one of the biggest sunnyblrinas had a url like trashboat and went by the nickname bio or something like that. I can't find their old blog and their fics have been orphaned on a03 so RIP fallen soldier....I've been unsuccessful so far at digging up posts from this time period because all of our old blogs have been deactivated for YEARS (mine included). If anyone has any 2014/2015 sunnyblr era posts please tag me I'd love to see them!

As for what we used to talk about: Mac was known to be gay but it was less salient in our discussions about him (remember he wouldnt come out on the show for several more years at this point) and it was like TABOO to suggest that Dennis might be gay. bisexual, sure. But to "gay Dennis truth" was to be biphobic since he hooks up with women. I'm really glad for that big 180 in thinking because I've always been a gay Dennis truther in my heart.

I don't remember shipping being huge? There were definitely those of us who enjoyed macden and made content for it but most of the blogs just posted like gifs and screen caps with overall less analysis / postulating. I think there was a very real fear of being Cancelled for saying something too nice or pure or w/e about these fucked up characters. I think Tumblr ecosystem is much more accepting and encouraging of "dark" content, which includes exploring amoral characters/subject matter, than it was back then. I don't ever remember CharDee or CharMac being discussed back then either. There was a huge emphasis on Charlie being on the asexual spectrum and it was Discourse Worthy if you wrote him as being sexual in any context. Weirdly enough, I remember Dennis/Dee being more socially acceptable and more frequently discussed. The good old days where incest was fine but speculating about sexuality was NOT (lol /s).

I can't remember any big Discourses or Scandals or hopes for later seasons that we had. Overall, I like this Tumblr better -- it's quiet here, sure, and sometimes we all say wildly OOC things about these insane characters, but i enjoy reading speculation posts and savoring the wide variety of macden content available to me. I like the focus on their fucked up dynamics and trauma backgrounds that we have now. We're all definitely adults and have more coherent thoughts about the content of the show, which is a nice change (I was about 15/16 my first sunnyblr time, as were most of my friends in fandom I think). It's nice to see people pick up on what RCG is trying to do with subtexts and references as opposed to taking things at face value. Older sunnyblr was way more like r/IASIP is today, the more I think about it. Way more rehashing jokes from the show and circle jerking about face value stuff like serial killer Dennis etc.

Glirst was still sooooooo real and all the lesbians have always wanted to fuck him. The one constant for now and for forevermore is that Glenn is sexually attractive and all the sexy ladies woobify his evil character <3

Here's the thing.

I genuinely can't see Harry Potter as anything but straight. Noticing when people are attractive does not make you gay. Harry noticed Lily Evans was beautiful, but does that mean he had the hots for his mother?...

We are specifically told when he is physically attracted to someone. Every single time it is a conventionally attractive girl with nice hair. Bonus points if she plays quidditch.

I mean, headcanon whatever you want. You can put anything in fanfiction. It's just that the actual canon points the other way.

While I'm on the subject, Ginny is also one I can only see as straight. Usually when I see people headcanoning her as bi, it seems to be an extension of the fanon idea of her being a tom boy. But despite loving quidditch and not crying as much as some others, she actually is very feminine. She smells like flowers; she has a girly bedroom; she has more friends who are girls canonically than any other female character. She also takes time to comfort a girl after Fred, one of her favorite brothers dies, showing a nurturing side generally seen mostly in girls. Loving quidditch and having a temper doesn't take away from any of this.

Of course there is more leeway with Ginny due to not having access to her pov. However, like Harry she has a very clear type: Tall, Dark and Handsome. Michael Corner who while we don't know his height, is referred to as "the dark one". She seems to be more into Dean who is both black and described as being "even taller than Ron".

Harry is also described as being tall by the time they get together and while he may be the lightest of her boyfriends, he at least has black hair, which usually comes with at least tanned skin. (Although if any of the main 7 is POC, it's Harry)

Taken together it's pretty clear that Ginny likes darker coloring. ( Therefore as much as I love her friendship with Luna, if she was bi, she'd be more likely to go for one of the patil twins than Luna. Or maybe Angelina Johnson. Also one of the many reasons Drinny would never happen. Draco is basically the opposite of every thing that attracts her. Some other things her boyfriends have in common are: not being pure blood, being in the DA; fighting against Voldemort; bravery: Michael risks his safety rescuing kids and gets tortured "badly" and still wants to fight, Dean literally come to battle without a wand.) Sorry for the tangent.

But, basically they both are shown to have very specific types within only the opposite gender.

With that said, here's a list of characters I could easily see as being at least bi:

Ron Weasley ( his celebrity crush on Krum)

Draco Malfoy ( while Harry is primarily obsessed with proving he's evil, Draco actually does seem to be obsessed with Harry personally)

Colin Creevey ( I definitely think he was gay.)

Seamus Finnigan ( never expresses any interest in girls)

Dean Thomas ( bi at the most, we don't enough about him to say he's not so why not)

Pansy Parkinson (probably not, but was actually the only slytherin interested in talking about how pretty Ginny was. jk, mostly)

Nymphadora Tonks ( she's the one that actually strikes me as a tomboy, and to me does give a bit of a disaster bisexual vibe)

Luna Love good ( bi, could see her having a crush on Ginny, by the way she talked about her. It also seems like she may have initially had a crush on Ron, but by HBP she was way more into Ginny. Maybe she likes red heads. I wouldn't be surprised to discover Rolf was one. But yeah, this is one I absolutely believe is either bi or lesbian. I also headcanon her to being on the autistic spectrum. It would explain as so much.)

Sirius Black (never expresses any interest in girls. Although, based on Canon, he's more likely to be into James than Remus. I could see him as bi, gay, or asexual.)

Charlie Weasley (said to be more interested in dragons than girls. I personally think he's probably Ace. Or he's actually attracted to Dragons. Jk.)

Basically anyone besides Ginny and Harry is a possibility.

Hello munchkins. Let’s get on the same page.

No single phrase, not even “diarrhea in the pool,” raises collective eyebrows faster than No, I’m not confused, I’m not experimenting; I’m bisexual.

Western culture has a passionate relationship with binaries. Good and Evil. Progressive and Conservative. Gay and Straight. A cultural shift towards acceptance of either end of The Binary™ has burgeoned since the late aughts. Feminism, same-sex marriage, socialist memes… all have gone mainstream. You can be anything as long as you stay in your lane. But so help you if you refuse to occupy a single role. Bisexual? You want twice the sexual options as everyone else? Don’t be so greedy!

I’m uniquely familiar with binaries, being bisexual, bipolar, and bilingual. (I’ve tried training myself to be ambidextrous to round it out, but my left hand is shit at printing.) I’m used to jettisoning myself between opposites, passing through many stages along the way. This is why I know binaries are crap.

If you’re “woke,” you’ve probably discussed the difference between binaries and spectrums. Maybe over a few beers. You’ll hear over and over again that sexuality, like many other things (notably mental health) is really a spectrum comprising a wide range of nuanced identities. I can attest that there are days when I feel “gayer” than others. The way my attraction to either gender manifests isn’t always the same, either.

Something about the spectrum theory hasn’t translated to the mainstream yet. Bohemian Rhapsody could barely bring itself to dedicate three minutes to the complexity of Freddie Mercury’s sexuality. Top 40 pop ballads by Rita Ora and Katy Perry mention being “open-minded” and wanting to try “just one taste” of the forbidden fruit—hope my boyfriend don’t mind it! And yet the bi population, per a range of studies, seems to outnumber the rest of the LGBTQIA+ acronym. (Although personally I like to think there are way more lesbians out there than the above chart lets on; we need More Lesbians In All Facets Of Life.) So, why is Bisexual such a dirty word?

Well, for one thing, people like to make sense of the world through labels. Labels can be good! The disenfranchised, the lonely, the marginalized, all can find a sense of belonging in attaching a label to their identities, and by extension finding a community of like minds. But labels and nuance are at odds with one another, and identity is all about nuance.

I’ve reflected at length on labels because of my mental hiccups (I refuse to call myself “neurodivergent” because it sounds like a cult in a teen dystopian romance novel). Disparate iterations of Toto vie for centre stage in my psyche, and they’re what I’d call complicated. Bipolar Toto has two featured characters: when I’m manic I’m armed to the teeth with motivation, energetic, a chronic insomniac, sociable, reckless, overconfident, optimistic, and for some reason desperate to sing karaoke (I hate karaoke); when I’m depressive I’m lethargic, judgmental, defeatist, insensitive, always tired, and prone to wearing my hair straight (I look better with curls).

But on the few occasions I’ve chosen to confide in friends about my mental troubles, I’ve gotten some pretty disconcerting demonstrations of support. A sample conversation:

TOTO – I’m not sure how to talk about this, but you might have noticed some odd behavior on my part lately. I’ve been prescribed Lexapro because my doctor thinks I might be bipolar. It’s a bit difficult adjusting to a new medication.

FRIEND – Wow, I think I might be bipolar too!

TOTO – Really? Thanks for sharing! When were you diagnosed?

FRIEND – I’ve never seen a doctor about it. I just know I’m often moody.

TOTO – That’s not really what being bipolar is about. But if you’re concerned you should know there’s no shame in seeking help. I’ll be happy to go to the clinic with you for support.

FRIEND – No, no, I don’t need that. You don’t understand. No one does. I’ll be happy one minute and sad the next.

Ad nauseam…

Look, everyone’s mental health journey is their own. Far be it for me to revoke self-diagnoses. My story simply goes to illustrate the oversimplification of traits associated with the “bipolar” label. In the popular imagination, bipolar begins and ends with rapid-fire mood swings.

So it could be posited that people feel alienated by bisexuality because, similarly to the above, its attendant traits are too diverse to slap on a label. So many body types to feel attracted to! Which is your favorite, dammit?

The label conundrum is one theory. I’ve heard it discussed over beers many times. But it’s not my favorite theory. Here’s what I really think: biphobia stems from jealousy; a fear that we have more sexual options, so we’re having more fun. We’re greedy and oversexed and too uninhibited.

And it’s all true. I’m not supposed to admit it, but I have to unburden myself. Hereafter follow the confessions of a bisexual with too many options:

Pursuing men as a woman is confusing. It starts out all ego. Is he looking at me? Is he interested? What will he think of me if I reciprocate his interest too soon, or too late? Then you have to play it cool for a while. I’ll say something just suggestive enough, then back off. Let’s not speak for a few days. You do the heavy lifting. Once you start dating, it’s a minefield. You’re a kind, hard-working, down-to-earth guy. You lectured me about feminism and you jump at any chance to call the Kardashians whores for some reason. But I’m tired and your biceps make me smile.

Honestly? It’s exhausting.

Pursuing women as a woman is... extremely confusing. It starts out very subtle (because nobody knows how to make a damn move on each other). I wonder what that look meant. Am I imagining this tension? Then things abruptly turn sickeningly sweet and attentive. Wow, I love your bracelet! How is your entire family doing? I wish we were scissoring but we’re dissecting in excruciating detail a text your ex sent you three months ago. Then, even if you’re dating, you’ll never really be entirely sure where you stand. Why are we holding hands? You said you didn’t want to risk our friendship, that you’re not into women. Why are we making out? Are you just being nice? Are we fucking as disinterested friends? 

Honestly? It’s a nightmare.

Have you ever felt that anxious cold sweat creeping up your spine when interacting with someone you like? Now double it.

An alternate suggestion to experiencing attraction: Gay or straight, don’t lust after anybody. Go home and Skype with your mom, who misses you. Vent your erotic energy by writing explicit Star Trek fanfiction, then take a satisfied nap. Join a commune and enter into an asexual life partnership with a revolving door of nuns and vagabonds. They don’t even know who the Kardashians are.

More options ultimately mean more opportunities to make an asshole of yourself in front of the person you like; nothing more, nothing less. Savvy kids have been referring to this as the “disaster bi” phenomenon for a while now, if I’m correctly remembering my alignment charts. In other words, as far as I’m concerned, you can slap a label on me: under the title “Bisexual,” the sub-heading will read “Awkward as hell—gender irrelevant.”

Despite that, he is the oldest of the group

He has blue eyes and his hair is wavy/almost curly and he just lets it do what it wants

He does have some light freckles on his face and arms you wouldn’t notice at first

He’s an only child and his parents baby him a bit too much sometimes

His mom doesn’t like his powers and tells him he can be ‘normal’ if he wants

Abilities: Time control (Can freeze and break away from time)/Time travel (Creates portals when he does so)

Virgil buys his clothes almost exclusively at thrift stores

His NASA hoodie he wears sometimes isn’t vintage by choice, it’s just really that old

He loves buying old clothes and adding his own touches to them

Like this black hoodie he added purple plaid patches to he loves and wears the most

most of his style involves hoodies

He got into makeup when his Ex took him to the ren faire and he dressed up like an evil warlock but keeps it very laid back

Working at a craft store has taught him a lot too

He learned how to knit simply because an old lady made a joke about how the needles make great self-defense weapons

also he learned it’s good for his anxiety

he doesn’t share any of that though

He looks to be almost as tall as Roman but is actually sliiightly taller

He slouches a lot so he seems shorter than he is

His brown hair is so dark it looks black, same as his brown eyes

Obviously the palest of everyone 

Has always had weird odds and ends jobs at local mom and pop stores (That’s how he sticks it to the man)

currently has been working at this one for a while, his longest lasting job

He loves his bosses because they keep people away from him as long as he gets his work done

Also the wife also suffers from anxiety so they accommodate him very well

Has dated mostly men in the past but is bisexual

His dad was a little freaked out about his powers but has come to just accept it

His mother died when he was younger and he still wishes he could have done more to help her

Hates his powers but mostly uses them to get through panic attacks and other issues alone(and naps)

Not the best coping mechanism and he knows it, but he’d rather suffer silently alone then look like a mess in front of someone else

Definitely perfectly okay after the ending of Practicality

Roman

Abilities: Electromagnetic Manipulation/Pretty much a walking battery/magnet

When he decides to dress casual, most of his clothes seem to come from the Disney store

Other than that, you will always find him dressed semi-formal

Button down shirts, dress pants and open jacket are staple Roman attire most days(jacket optional)

Roman has spent more and more of his time outside and running around dressed up in a Prince costume trying to ‘be a hero’ and ‘save the world from evil’

His first costume was from one of his theater shows

He’s very much into dressing up and costumes and makeup and acting though he doesn’t let it slip into his normal life ‘much’ 

Everyone knows he's in denial about that though

His hair is light brown and his eyes are brown/hazel

He’s also a bit tan. (I always imagined him hispanic)

He makes up for the blandness in appearance in everything else he does

His prince’s outfit comes with a masquerade mask and his hair is usually slicked back

His parents and friends growing up all knew about his abilities

he described it as that ‘one character trait everyone has’ like wearing glasses so they thought nothing of it

He never formally came out as gay, his parents just accepted it and kinda had a feeling

He is the only one with another sibling--a little sister named Julie

She has no powers but always thought her brother would be taken away to become an X-Men when she was younger

They bicker and fight but she looks up to him a lot and while fulfilling her sisterly duties of being annoying, she would do anything for Ro.

His parents have and I quote “the best romance love story in history” which is why they named their kids Roman and Julie. (*cough Romeo and Juliet cough*)

He has a fan club, did you know about it?

He’s totally a real superhero with an actual fan club and it’s awesome

Abilities: Power absorption (Hmm, guess there is no second one, huh? ;) Strange...) EDIT: Power amplification! Surprise!

Totally didn’t have powers until he was greeted by this guy one day

Tried telling him he had abilities and just kind of freaked him out

Something weird happened and the guy kind of walked away and he tried to forget the whole thing

Met him months later and learned he copied abilities??? 

He told his closest friend Joan about the whole weird situation and gave him the address he was going to for answers when he left

Turns out he DOES have powers, who knew?

These guys just made his life a whole lot more interesting and stressful

You know the story, it’s Thomas, guys!

Life after the whole mess has been weird for him

Logan keeps looking at him weird but pretty much all his memories have returned

He gets random facts wrong he swore he knew

Someone will ask him a question and he will freeze, drawing a blank

Patton keeps in contact a lot and lets him know whats going on

While he doesn’t hang out with the group often since they all moved, he keeps in contact with all of the others in some way

He’s already invited to movie night at the new place

Secretly follows ‘Princey’s’ actions throughout the city to make sure Roman isn’t doing anything too stupid

Visits Virgil sometimes when Talyn needs stuff for some random thing they’re making

He tries to catch Logan at work and gets a new book when he can

Has grown closer to Logan who has a strange interest in his powers...

I think that the entire purpose of trying to fit these characters into specific sexualities goes against a lot of the point of the show. I see the show as very much a queer (and queered) narrative, and a lot of the characters would fall onto the queer spectrum, and it seems almost incompatible with the project of calling into question pre-received categories of self that the show itself has to even have a survey with questions like this.

I only gave their sexual orientation based on the interactions I saw during the series. All of the men are straight because I didn't see (or remember) them interacting with other men in a romantic/sexual way. I didn't base their sexuality on their appearance or their(especially touga's) flamboyant personality.

A lot of the heterosexual relationships in this show are explicitly shown to be Fucked Up so like, idk. Like, I don't really have a hc for Tsuwabuki bc his romantic involvement with Nanami was just Bad and I don't really see it as indicative of an actual preference and more of like, a vulnerability to manipulation? And I feel like that's true for a lot of the characters, like their really manipulative or abusive relationships can't be taken as like an actual indication of preference. Especially the incestuous ones.

Literally everyone is bi in the Utena universe. Nice and simple. It allows for ease of storytelling, being able to explore gender/sexuality themes without getting all label-y in a narrative that doesn't really use (or need) labels. I like Utena specifically because it focuses on the more interesting storytelling aspects of romance and heterosexism without unnecessary diversions of "am I gay or straight? oh no I can't decide!" (But then again some people think of that as the driving question of the whole series! I think everyone just pulls out themes they relate to.)
