TES Food::Chicken Dumplings
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Elder Scrolls: The Official Cookbook
Chicken Dumplings | 3.5
These dumplings are a specialty of many an inn across Skyrim, where travelers can enjoy them hot after a long day's journey, but they're also a popular pick in one's own homestead kitchen. In either case, the creamy filling has restorative properties, especially washed down with a flagon of the local specialty.
⭑⭑⭑⭑☆ | Taste: 4/5
The flavor is there, but it isn't as good as it should be given how much work is involved. As usual with these recipes, at a minimum you want to double the custom seasoning (Stormcloak in this case). There are a lot of other pot-pie-like filling recipes you can use that involve a lot less work
⭑⭑☆☆☆ | Cooking Ease: 2/5
Heavy prep: you have to make the dough beforehand, and additionally, baking the chicken ahead of time and then pulling it apart into bite-sized pieces to then re-bake is time consuming
⭑⭑☆☆☆ | Cost to Make: 2.5/5
Cheddar isn't the most expensive cheese ever, but with only needing 1/4 cup, you're not exactly getting your money's worth
Rye flour for the rye pie dough is a more specialty flour, and thus commands a specialty price
You can probably substitute onions for leeks in this recipe, so that can help reduce cost
Notes:
When each recipe is cooked for the first time, there are no substitutions used; the recipe is cooked exactly as the book states, with the given ingredients. I only recommend what I feel could be good substitutes, if any, after the first time making the recipe

Can confirm this lavender honey bread is honestly an amazing first bread to start off with when baking! The smell is lovely, the flavor of the lavender isn't for me, but this also makes honey bread that's to die for!

We received a review copy of The Elder Scrolls: The Official Cookbook Vol. 2. While we've yet to make any of the meals from it, we have read it. The cookbook is written from an in-universe perspective, from a young chef adventuring across Tamriel to learn more about cooking.
Tumblr media
There were a lot of little details that were very interesting to us from a lore perspective, this book legitimately gives us one of the largest looks at life in the Fourth Era across Tamriel. Very surprisingly, it even seemingly confirms the events of one of Skyrim's questlines.
Tumblr media
We were particularly surprised that it gave us a look into some of the regions that it did, like the Summerset Isles (although we can't show you previews from those pages yet). And this book can be added to the growing list of evidence that others are aware of M'aiq the Liar.
Tumblr media
There was even a surprising segment that explored a very niche lore topic that was of interest to one of our editors (can't show you the preview from that one yet either).
Tumblr media
It's kind of strange that one of the most common complaints about recipes are the unnecessary stories that get attached to them, but for this book it was one of the highlights for us. Ironically, this cookbook made us really hungry for them to release more official Elder Scrolls books.
You can find the publisher's official list of links to this book here, and it should be released officially very soon.

So, I semi-recently got into making mead. I took an elective class on brewing and distilling my last semester of undergrad (it was classified as a chemical engineering class, lmao) and I loved it. Distilling is something you can only do with a license, and beer brewing is technically easy, but requires a whole setup I don't have space for. Mead, though, is pretty much just mixing honey and water and letting the yeast go to work (it's also a lot less carbs than beer, which my body appreciates).
The first batch I made was pretty terrible, but it wasn't hard to figure out what I did wrong, and the next try was much better. And since I have chronic gamer disease, once I had the method figured out I obviously had to try some of the Skyrim recipes - after all, if it wasn't for Skyrim, I probably wouldn't even know what mead is. I started with the Honningbrew recipe from the official Elder Scrolls cookbook, and it came out great! I have some ideas on how to improve the next batch (I'd really like more flavor from the apple), but I was proud enough of it to whip up a fun little label in photoshop, so I figured I might as well share it here, too.
Tumblr media
Anyway, here's your friendly internet reminder that if you think something looks fun, you can literally just.. go do it. It probably will be fun, even if you're bad at it! No one's stopping you except for you.

Any warm and cozy recipe ideas for a satyr-kin? Or maybe self-care, or masc/dark outfit ideas that come in bigger sizes? Sorry if this is a bit different ^^'
Dont be sorry, I got you!!
Tumblr media
So for the fashion I tried to include stuff that was modern/casual that you could wear without drawing too much attention to yourself. I also included some more obviously fantasy-styled clothing if that's your vibe too! I hope these inspire you. I think the puffy legged pants (aka "pirate pants" really give off the vibe and you could incorporate that into a lot of modern outfits!
Cozy Recipes For A Satyr:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Grilled Garlic Mushroom Skewers
Goat Cheese Stuffed Dates
Medieval Potage Stew
Charcuterie!
Herb Baked Eggs
If you love cooking I have to recommend any sort of fantasy/medieval cookbook. They're FILLED with cozy recipes that might scratch that itch for you. You can find a lot of free scans online but I recommend The Elder Scrolls Official Cookbook, Heroes' Feast (Official D&D cookbook), and Tasting History by Max Miller (this guy also has a YouTube channel by the same name where he uploads free tutorials and recipes!)
As For Selfcare:
Feasts!
I'm not sure about you specifically, but its said that satyrs are known to love the pleasures of the flesh. Feasts! Drinking! Be merry! If you can, take the time to have a meal with friends, family or a loved one and just chat it up and have a good time!
Indulge your senses
Surround yourself with things that appeal to your senses. Succulent fruits, vibrant colors in nature, wonderful music, etc.
Ritual Baths
Treat yourself to a bath infused with herbs, flowers and oils. Play some gentle music or ambient nature sounds. Maybe even light some candles!
Seek Adventure
It can be anything from visiting somewhere you've never visited in your local area, to taking a day off to take a hike! Nature spirits thrive on excitement and exploration
Feed your mind
Storytelling and learning. Dive into podcasts, books and mythology and expand your knowledge. Revel in the magic of storytelling!
------------------------------------------------------
I hope you like these! I had a LOT of fun making this. Satyrs are so cool!

TES Food::Hot Mudcrab Dip
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Elder Scrolls: The Official Cookbook
Hot Mudcrab Dip | 3/5
Let's face it—we've all been chased around by these pesky oversized crabs. Now you can take your revenge on those self-important crustaceans by mixing them into this tasty dip. They bring friends, so why shouldn't you feed them to yours?
★★★☆☆ | Taste: 3/5
Just like pea soup, I am incredibly picky when it comes to anything with real crab. It's something you can royally screw up and make overly greasy, or something you can make absolutely glorious. This was decent, but it did unfortunately suffer being more on the greasy side, likely because of the cheese
★★★★★ | Cooking Ease: 5/5
🥣 Single-pot cookable - you could just mix everything in the baking dish
⏱ Quick prep + cook time - baking by definition is never really quick, but we're not exactly roasting turkeys here either
🔪 Little prep: grating the cheese is the only real prep necessary. Otherwise, this is all assembly, baby; my *favorite*!
★☆☆☆☆ | Cost to Make: 1.5/5
I mean, this is all dairy and real crab, so it's not gonna be cheap. Cheese is cheap here in Europe, and there may be some places in the USA where dairy is reasonable, but in the many places I lived, that was definitely not the case ;(
Notes:
I have a few recipes made stockpiled, since it would be a while before the kitchen was properly setup to make anything here. In reality, I've only made 1 thing so far since moving, so I plan on getting through the other recipes first, before starting with the European ventures

I finally got my hands on the elder scrolls cookbook! So frickin hyped to read it!!!! I primarily got it for my partner as they recently have gotten more into cooking and Skyrim has been one of our favorite shared interests.
Sorry if this is weird or something, Im just really happy I got it and I dont have anyone else to share it with.
I don't want anything to do with the official cookbook (long story but you'll probably find some...overlaps in my work and what the author made as "original content") but thanks for thinking of me, I hope it's fun for you regardless. ~Tal

Lunch! Today's lunch all comes from the official Elder Scrolls Cookbook, which I've made quite a few recipes since getting it for Christmas! They've all been delightful so far ^^
We've got Redguard Rice (ground lamb and wild rice), Stewed Apples and Eidar Cheese (sweetened spiced stewed apples with goat cheese), and Potato Bread (what it says on the tin)!
Today's a half day, so no dinner posting tonight! Might share something else I've been working on for a couple weeks though~

actually a fun thing to note if you do not own the official elder scrolls cookbook is it uses grains of paradise for most spice mixes instead of black pepper. i do not know why. the climate of tamriel should allow for black pepper cultivation in some areas.

I'm brewing! All recipes but the last from the official elder scrolls cookbook, which I've made a lot of food recipes from by now, and am dipping into the drinks! Last ones from the official D&D one named heroes feast, which same deal
The three bottles on the left are skooma- apricot, cardamom, vanilla and sugar water in vodka. It'll be a nice cordial soon (I started it over a week ago and forgot to mark when it was bottled, oops)
Back left will be honningbrew mead- pink lady apple, ginger, and lavender
Next to it is the black briar mead. Supposed to be blackberries, rosehips, and cinnamon, but I couldn't find the first two so substituted blueberries and hibiscus, and added some whole cloves. We'll see how it goes!
And on the right is the delayed blast fireball/Firestar wine, which right now is toasted dried pasillo pepper, cloves, cinnamon, and bourbon. I'll be adding some water and brown sugar when it's ready in a week!

In Regards to the Official Cookbook
I've had it preordered and I am genuinely excited to see what lore is snuck in there as well as what other canon dishes they make. I would like to see some creative dishes for the more imaginative things mentioned in Thedas, but I'm mostly here for the lore. So, when it comes out in October, please know I will be yelling about it and I will not be quiet about it.
One of the things I enjoyed seeing is the fact that it is now within updated/current i.e. post Inquisition canon that dwarves farm giant spiders. Before that was only mentioned in the Origins game guide - where they were also used to control the giant bat population. But also in the tabletop rpg, where surface dwarves who were trying to get to Orzammar were farming giant spiders. So we got a nice bit of dwarf lore and I want more.
But along with that, I'm curious to see just how much they will stick to a more western pallet, if they'll include things like dietary restrictions, measurement conversions, things like that. This is the same publisher that made the Elder Scrolls cookbook which is honestly fantastic in it's accessibility to differing dietary restrictions. (Also kinda like their layout better in that one lol)
I'm also interested to see how the historical recipes I've chosen hold up to what they put out. I started Foods of Thedas, not with the expectation of being anywhere close, but exploring more variety than we'd likely get from canon. It would be nice to see that they slot in pretty well, even with recipes that might be more Americanized.

A Call To Action: Fannish Cookbook ToC
We are in an exciting new era of cookbook creation; one wherein you, the consumer of fannish materials, have cookbooks directly marketed to you. Ever wondered what Skyrim sweet rolls taste like? Wonder no more! Interested in trying the official version of the blue milk off Aunt Beru's kitchen table? There's a cookbook for that. Curious what sweet concoction tempted a family of cats, and their friendly house mouse, to unknowingly ingest a whole bottle of sleeping tablets? Créme de la créme de la Edgar can be found in the Enchanted Recipes cookbook.
Exciting though this is, there seems to be a fatal flaw with these fan-centered cookbooks: their organization. I own all of the above books, plus a few more (I can stop anytime I want, I swear!) and NONE of these books have a conventional organization. The Elder Scrolls book is sorted by in-game location. Unofficial Disney Parks is sorted by in-park location. Enchanted Recipes has a sorting system that is best described as Girl Movies, Boy Movies, Multicultural Movies, and Other. If I wanted to buy a whole cookbook so I could throw a kickass dinner party with a hyper-specific ''Stormwind" theme, this would be the way to go. For everyone else, these organizational systems are near-useless.
When I pick up one of these cookbooks, it's generally because I want novelty. I'm looking for an entree I've never tried before, or a dessert I vaguely remember, or a side dish to add to an already-planned meal. These are the categories most conventional cookbooks sort by, and for good reason! I shouldn't have to rewrite the entire Table of Contents so I can find a dessert recipe!
Look, I understand that kicking conventional cookbook structure is part of the fun of the book. At the beginning and end of each of these sections, there's often some fun facts or little lore drops, even little anecdotes written by the in-universe author. Gorgeous pictures abound. There is absolutely thought and effort that went into the the structure of these cookbooks, and I don't mean to belittle that.
But authors, publishers, I beseech you: please include a conventional table of contents, with categories like "entrees" and "desserts", somewhere near the beginning of your fannish cookbook. You can keep the thematic Table of Contents too, you can keep the fun formatting and occasional lore-drops, none of that needs to change, I just need a list of entrees and their page numbers. It doesn't even have to be chronological! I'm a big girl, I can flip through and find page numbers all by myself!
On a related note, if anyone needs a Table of Contents written up for any of the above mentioned books, hit me up. At this point I have typed up a Table of Contents for nearly all my cookbooks. It would be silly to ask someone else to reinvent the wheel when I can just as easily send a file.
