NAME: Phobid

RARITY: ★★☆☆☆

THREAT LEVEL: ★★☆☆☆ | Usually causes short-term panic but capable of causing long-term trauma. Not known to directly cause death.

HABITAT: They sustain themselves with human fear, so tend to live in populated areas. Some may prefer farmland or meadows, but never too far from their food source.

DESCRIPTION: These diminutive and nocturnal fae are named after Phobos, the Greek god of fear and panic. Appropriately so, since phobids instill fear in those they come across in order to feed on it. Any non-fae who looks into the small, glowing white eyes of these pixie-like creatures will suddenly become cowardly. Things that weren’t scary before suddenly range from being anxiety-inducing to utterly terrifying to their victims. Like pixies, they sometimes enjoy taunting and conversing with humans, even though they view humans as lowly creatures. Phobids aren’t usually directly lethal, though the fear and cowardice they induce can lead to disaster for their victims at a later date.

ABILITIES: Small, winged, and agile, phobids are difficult to detect and even harder to catch. Those unlucky enough to see them are likely to fall prey to them. While often the fear and panic they induce is short-lived (just enough for the phobids to feed off of and be entertained), it’s well-established that they can actually cause long-term or even lifelong phobias in unlucky individuals. Often, these phobias are of things that their victim has never even had exposure to, or had any bad lived experience with. This can be difficult for their victims to understand and cope with. Though phobids have less innate magical ability than pixies do, they are capable of using small glamours and other magic, especially to evade capture or escape. They can speak any tongue.

WEAKNESS: As fae, phobids are weak to iron. They can be rendered mostly harmless provided someone doesn’t look into their eyes. Some people who know about phobids take their chances with a blindfold, hoping that the phobids they encounter aren’t hungry enough to yank it off or try a different tactic. 

OTHER VARIANTS:

Skrzak: First identified by Polish wardens, skrzak are cackling phobids with purple skin and a vaguely imp-like appearance who prefer to live in the dark near places connected to other dimensions. Slavic mythology hints that skrzaks might’ve entered this world through earthquake fissures when powerful beings were released from the void in the ancient past. Unlike their phobid cousins, skrzaks cause intense anxiety and shame through their laugh. Their laughter causes past shameful events and embarrassment to flood into the victim’s mind, sometimes to the point of a nervous breakdown.

Drude: First described by German wardens, druden are powerful phobids that attack people in dreams. They usually look like small, hunching figures with glowing eyes, but can veil themselves in illusion. They’re known for laying the “drudenfluch” curse on people. Someone afflicted by drudenfluch will be compelled to attack sleeping people and animals, even those they love, remotely feeding the drude with the ensuing panic. They’re repelled by adder stones, and hanging one around the neck of someone afflicted by drudenfluch will break the curse.

Status Update: Generalized Lorentz-Drude model of Dielectrics.

This week I continued to venture into the realm of nonlinearities by learning about the Lorentz model followed by the Drude model for metals.

It was fun employing the whole "statistical ensemble" trick to relate the microscopic dipole moments of individual atoms being subjected to an applied Electric Field to the macroscopic property of Material Polarization and further towards the Electric Flux Response of a material.

Once again, complex numbers rear their heads and there's growing pains in understanding the physical significance behind "complex dielectric" with the "real permittivity" all while trying to connect it with notions of conductivity in terms of both free space responses and material responses contributing to the total Electric Flux.

It is kinda neat how the complex refractive indexes extinction coefficient can be used to ??? Let us see where a materials absorption is highest near points of resonance?

And furthermore, a interesting connection to metamaterials was established when I realized that if the resonances of our doped elements are in frequencies way below our materials resonances, we do some cool stuff with the maths.

Something something we can use the dielectric permittivity at DC and at very high (infinity) to calculate the plasma frequency of a metal.

Now my plan is to deep dive into crystal anisotropy, do some numerical examples of tensor rotation, and hopefully that will help me better understand optical components like quarter wave plates and all that stuff.

And before anyone asks, no, Optical Rectification, the second order chi nonlinearity is NOT the mechanism of solar panels, that's the photoelectric effect 😉
