What's holding Din back?

I sat down to try and write some fic for the new season, but so far, I'm fresh out of ideas for Din... mainly because I'm unclear of what's going on in his head these days.

On the surface, he has everything he could possibly want.

Grogu is back with him! Din was clearly thrilled to have him back in their reunion in TBoBF, and his pride for Grogu shines through in all of their interactions.

He has the Darksaber! It's been liberated from a non-Mandalorian enemy, and is back safely in Mandalorian hands.

With the help of his ally Bo-Katan, he's bathed in the Living Waters of the Mines of Mandalore and been redeemed in the eyes of his people, who have accepted him back with open arms and no further questions on his transgressions. Even better, Bo-Katan has joined his covert as a skilled warrior he respects. The Armorer is treating Grogu as one of their people, and Din is even getting along with Paz Viszla.

So why do things feel off?

Paz Viszla, who has the emotional range of a brick, explains to Din (possibly his least favorite fellow Mandalorian) that the foundling they are seeking to rescue is his son. Bo-Katan calls Din Grogu's Dad in all of their conversations. Grogu is trying his best to learn to talk, and Dad is an extremely reasonable guess for one of his first words.

Din... calls himself Grogu's ward. Not his dad, his guardian, his father. Just ward, an archaic word for protection. Grogu is a foundling. Not his foundling.

Why?

And why does he struggle so badly with the Darksaber? We've only seen him use it a few times; the only time that barely approached competence was when he used it on Tatooine, but even on sacred Mandalore itself, his mind focused on redemption and the history of his people, it would not obey him. The Armorer told him the Darksaber responds to his mind and its distractions. Why would he be distracted then, on his path to achieve his goal to honor his Mandalorian culture? Will we see next week that he's suddenly super proficient with it? It's possible, but I doubt it -- otherwise, why make such a big deal of his incredible skill in other areas contrasted with his clumsiness with the Darksaber? I really hope they're going somewhere interesting with this.

...Just like I wish this meta was going somewhere. But I can't get it there because I genuinely don't know what's wrong with him. Why can't he claim Grogu as his own after everything? Is that why he struggles with the Darksaber, because he's not accepting fatherhood? Why wouldn't he? Fear, memories of trauma... what could it be?

(Of course, bad or inconsistent writing could certainly be the explanation for all of this, it is Star Wars after all and we all know it ain't that deep. But for the sake of argument, let's pretend that's off the table, haha!)

Spoilers for The Mandalorian, S3E3...

Once again, spoilers for The Convert...

I spent this whole episode trying to make connections. I'm not sure if I should be, but I feel like the show is in a time period that is the right time period to start setting up certain aspects of events in the sequel trilogy. So my thoughts bounced between two things: one, that Dr Pershing is going to have something to do with the clones of Snoke and the Emperor. (and thus Rey's father - maybe he already did?!) And two, that the mind-flayer at the end could end up leading to the conditioning programs used on First Order troopers.

It seems fairly obvious that Kane was not as innocent as she seemed, even when she turned out to be 'working' with the New Republic. No, she's definitely a double agent, and what if whatever she is doing is precursor to the First Order? Whether she is working for Gideon or - even better, Thrawn - either way it all ends up with the Emperor puppeting the First Order.

It's out there, somewhere. Pretty soon, Finn will be born and taken into the First Order trooper program. In fact, Favreau said this season is now 11ABY - the year Finn is born. He was taken as a 3 year old. So the First Order must be organizing somewhere and developing the conditioning programs they use to brainwash their stolen children. Maybe this episode is part of that.

The fact that The March of the Resistance was playing in the background on Coruscant while Kane was ensnaring Pershing seems deliberate. It's like it's hinting at the First Order by using the theme of the Resistance. Plus her own music was sort of dark and broody like the dark side.

Personally, I had really hoped for a connection to Yavin 4 and the death of Poe Dameron's mother, but that seems unlikely now. The show started in 8ABY and Shara Bey died in 10ABY (when Poe was eight). Since Favreau said it's now 11ABY, that window has probably passed. But what I wouldn't give for a visit to Yavin and a meeting with a sad veteran and his 9 year old son.

I missed seeing Din and Grogu in this episode but as long as we don't get too many of these big diversions, and as long as it all comes together, I'm in. And if Thrawn shows up to throw us a bone for Ahsoka, I'm screaming.

yo can we actually talk about harrow's blood face paint and veil at the beginning of htn for a sec. i know a lot of people poke fun at it but for me as someone who grew up in a veiling religion with the constant threat of that veil being taken away it's like... not being able to wear that veil IN FRONT OF PEOPLE? that's like being naked before god. it is terrifying and traumatic to not be able to wear a veil or other religious garments. at the end of the day it's not even about god specifically, like i could meet god and even if he said to take off the veil i wouldn't, because it's for me. it's for her before it's for god. i felt for harrow so hard at that part of the book and i get that she's just a scrungle but i would love if we could portray occasionally the nauseating forced vulnerability and sense of injustice you would feel at your religion being stripped from you.

AND since I've also had to read comments like "what's the big deal, it only takes five minutes" with my own two eyes, let's do an experiment, shall we? I'll make the same gif in 5 minutes with the first online gif converter that pops up (cheating a bit, since I already cut the clip and adjusted the frame rate so it runs smoother. also I used about 8 minutes minus the time it took to upload the video because I haven't used ezgif.com before) and through my usual methods ✌️ here they are:

and you know, the first gif is perfectly fine!! especially if you really just want to show a quick clip or need a reaction gif. BUT the second one is the kind that usually gets stolen (reposted without credit). we all like pretty gifs, and the best way to get more of those is to appreciate the people who make them (reblog!! give credit if you use them!!), because seeing them stolen is deeply demotivating - we make them to share excitement and love for shows with fellow fans, and you're taking that away from us when you don't credit. making gifs is work (and a skill that takes practice), and there's a person behind every gif (even the 5 min gif converter one), they don't just magically appear ✌️ give credit!!
