Women’s History Meme || Mistresses (7/10) ↬ Rosamund de Clifford (before 1140 – c. 1176)
Popular biographers barely acknowledge that Henry II had a son by Ida de Tosney, but they attach much significance to his infatuation with Rosamund Clifford, who has been termed “the great love of his life.” Henry’s supposed public flaunting of his new mistress is sometimes put forward as the source of the queen’s desire for revenge. The fair maiden Rosamund was the daughter of Walter Clifford, a Welsh border lord, and the king may have first met her at a stop at her father’s castle during his 1165 campaign in Wales. She was no more than in her early twenties while he was thirty-two, and Eleanor had passed her fortieth year. None of the late twelfth-century chroniclers makes a specific allegation that Rosamund Clifford was the cause of Eleanor’s disenchantment with her marriage, however, and the evidence is too thin to suggest that this mistress presented a greater threat to it than had Henry’s previous ones. Most significantly, the chronology of Henry II’s affair with Rosamund does not fit the alleged facts. Some biographers have dated the king’s affair with her as early as 1166, and they credit the queen’s decision to leave the English court for Poitou in 1168 to the humiliation that she suffered. Yet the affair is likely to have begun during Eleanor’s Poitevin sojourn, no earlier than 1170 and possibly not until 1173, and it only became a public spectacle after the queen’s return to England as a prisoner in 1174, lasting some six years until Rosamund’s death in 1176 or 1177. Although Henry’s second illegitimate son, William Longsword, was born shortly before or soon after his affair with Rosamund Clifford began, he was definitely not her child. Eleanor’s husband was no more faithful to the fair Rosamund than he was to his queen. If Rosamund was indeed the great love of Henry’s life, the strongest evidence for his devotion is a house known as Everswell that he ordered to be built near the royal residence at Woodstock, intended for her according to tradition. Constructed around a spring with water running through rectangular pools and surrounded by cloistered courts, it was more like palaces of Norman Sicily than any secular building in northern Europe. In later legend Rosamund’s residence would be described as a maze or labyrinth, designed to make certain that Eleanor could never find her rival. Not even the gossipy Gerald of Wales, always willing to slander the Plantagenets, depicted the queen’s incitement of her sons’ revolt as resulting from her wrath over Henry’s mistress Rosamund Clifford. In one work written only a few years after the great revolt, he implied that Henry had been discreet in his adulteries up to that time: “After the great wrong committed against their father by his sons, under their mother’s influence … [the king] openly broke his marriage vows.” Writing decades later, Gerald declared that the king “was before an adulterer in secret, and was afterwards manifestly such,” pointing out that he publicly displayed his liaison with Rosamund only after the queen’s imprisonment. Other chroniclers add nothing about Rosamund’s role in Eleanor’s estrangement from Henry. The sometime royal clerk, Roger of Howden, remained silent about the affair until after the king’s death. Rosamund’s name only appears in his account of Saint Hugh of Lincoln’s visit to the convent of Godstow in 1191, when he ordered her tomb removed from the nuns’ chapel and reburied in the churchyard, “for she was a harlot.” Eleanor’s rage against Henry for his liaison with the fair Rosamund is insufficient to explain her role in her sons’ revolt. — Eleanor of Aquitaine: Queen of France, Queen of England by Ralph Turner

Noldorin family trees again bc its been like. 2 years and ive changed everything
design notes below readmore
-originally wanted finwe to be very blue bc of the color coding w miriel and indis, and then their children ie: Fëanor wearing red bc he's Míriel's son, Fingolfin wearing blue bc he's Finwë's son, and Finarfin wearing green bc he's Indis' son. scrapped it bc he looks good in white and gold but the idea stuck around with the silver n gold
-little gemstones on Finwë's headdress are red and green for his wives. similarly Fëanor's are only red for his mother
-Finarfin wears a more vanyarin style compared to his siblings, aside from Lalwen but her style is also like. noldorinized
-the different clans of elves have different resting positions for their ears! the vanyar have theirs almost straight up, the noldor have the classic kinda-up, and the teleri have theirs parallel to the ground
-thr large headdresses Finwë, Fëanor, Fingolfin, Maedhros, Curufin, and Fingon wear are like noldorin royalty stuff for eldest sons/heirs. While i do think Maedhros is Fëanor's heir i do think some favoritism let Curufin wear one too. i dont think i need to explain why Curufin's looks so similar to Fëanor's
-fingolfins headdress is meant to resemble the sun bc he's the first High King under the Sun and Moon
-the nose ring that some of them have is a Vanyarin style indicating that they are married
-Maedhros and Fingon have similar headdreses bc i think it would have pissed tf out of their fathers. also i think its funny
-Nerdanel and Anairë are noldor, but to me they are from noldorin minorities which have slightly differing cultures frm the majority which is why their clothing is slightly different
-that boob window thing Nerdanel, Maedhros, and Celegorm have are specific and iconic to the Aulendil
-Maglor is channeling Míriel’s clothing style here, which although might come off as a bit feminine is not. i dont think elves would be very strict abt that kinda stuff
-Míriel and Celegorm have albinism
-the Ambarussa aren't quite identical and i think they have very dif personalities and styles. to me. Amras (short hair) is more mainstream noldorin while Amrod is more of their mothers style
-while he and his siblings r very noldorin in style, Argon is channeling his mothers style more than the majority
-the mark on Eärwen and her children's lower lips are a coming of age kinda thing. dont ask me how they get those vibrant colors bc i dont know
-the gold on Eärwen’s headscarf is meant to resemble fishing nets
-each of Finarfin and Eärwen’s children channel a dif. part of their heritage in their clothing--Finrod is a noldorinized vanyarin style, Angrod and Aegnor are different kinds of Telerin, and Galadriel is Noldorin
-the like. shark tooth necklaces that Angrod and Aegnor have is a symbol of being an accomplished fisherman
-everyone born in Valinor has light in the center of their eyes which correspond to the light of the trees they were born under. this doesnt really matter and you cant really see it but its important to me that you know
-on that note, Finarfin has both lights in his eyes bc he was born during the mingling. bc i can do whatever i want

andrew’s definitely gotten in trouble with his pr manager for tweeting things along the lines of:
“no mania inducing medication will compare to the euphoria i will feel the day donald trump drops dead”
#pr manager is like: andrew… this is the last time i’m gonna tell you#andrew: whats the point of democracy if i can’t exercise freedom of speech#pr manager: andrew it’s no longer about your image#at this point we are concerned the fbi is going to show up#andrew: neil has connections. i’m fine#they thought marketing andrew on social media would be good#they were sooooo wrong#because now andrew has a place to share every insane thing he’s ever thought#for instance—a tweet that just says ‘an alien googling: human clothes’#he’s on there advocating for lgbtq+ youth you KNOW HE IS#he’s cursing and mildly threatening members of congress for imposing these disgusting bills#one day he tweeted ‘does mitch mcconnell know he’s dead yet’#when mitch mcconnell stepped down from senate andrew tweeted ‘hopefully next he steps down from life’#unsurprisingly: this endears him to some people and makes others fucking hate him#and he’s such a shit. he does not care either way#he’s kind of just like: pr manager. you gave me a twitter and told me to tweet. i’m just doing what you asked me#they’ve threatened to change his password so many times#they actually did once but andrew reported the account so many times for defamation and fraud that it got suspended#and he made a new account out of pure spite#his pr manager is like: andrew nobody is going to want to sign you because of your public image#and andrew is like: ?? ok. they can lose every game then#(he knows he’s the best goalie)#ok i think that’s enough for now. however i will probably be back#andrew minyard#aftg#tfc#trk#tkm#the foxhole court#all for the game

I ask this as an Ambroys appreciator, but I genuinely need to know: Does our boy have any redeeming qualities?
...Yeah. Not really.
Ambroys is, for me, a fun exercise in making a character who is basically nothing but flaws. And they aren't even the "good" flaws.
He's not one of those "hates the world but fights to the death for his loved ones" types; he will throw his loved ones under bus to look good for strangers, who he also doesn't respect. He's not "an asshole but he owns it" because he will bend to other people's wills to try to appease them while continuing to be an asshole behind their backs. He's manipulative but not because he's a clever chess-master, he's just audacious and shameless enough to lie and guilt-trip people without remorse. He's too ignorant to be sophisticated but too educated to be naive. He can fight well enough, but he doesn't seek out worthy foes, only weaker enemies he can easily grind into the dirt for a cheap thrill. He's a coward. He's lazy. He doesn't "get" art. He has no convictions. He sucks!
But I think the fun with Ambroys is that he's such a worthless person, but he so, so desperately wants to be admired and praised and just liked. So he has to engage in this dance of maintaining a good public face over the void of his personality, where he tries to appeal to people while also being able to indulge his vices, because he doesn't believe anything he does or thinks is wrong... just unpopular. But being unpopular is worse than being wrong.
