carlossainz55 this last week has been extra special for me, to know it is the anniversary of the first time i met my best friend, and that she was able to be with me when i lifted the trophy in singapore is a wonderful feeling.

You know, when it comes to the four Cherik actors, the old men walked so the young men could run.

We all give McAvoy and Fassbender the love they deserve, but honestly we wouldn’t have any onscreen Cherik at all if those two old Shakespeare vets hadn’t laid such a strong foundation a whole decade prior in the original trilogy.

Remember that Stewart and McKellen had no beach divorce to work off of. First Class wasn’t even a thought in any writer’s head yet when the OG trilogy was filmed. And yet they understood the assignment from day 1 - the “exes who never got over each other” vibes are just pouring off of both of them in every scene, especially from their eyes, starting from the very first moment Stewart’s jaw drops and his breathing stops as he sees McKellen in the shadows of the Congress crowd, and McKellen then manages to make a threatening line like “don’t get in my way” sound so … gentle. Be it outside Congress or in the plastic prison or outside Jean’s house, you can feel the weight of their shared history bearing down on them, a weight so palpable it’s on the verge of crushing them both every time they so much as lock eyes.

And you can see echoes of the young men Charles and Erik used to be in their performances … you can fill in the gaps with First Class details thanks to their level of nuance.

Every time they call each other “old friend,” you can hear the underlying emotions they haven’t figured out how to express aloud, and the hidden knowledge that those two words only scratch the surface of what they really are to each other.

Within Stewart’s heartbroken look in all of his closeups in their first scene on the Congress walkway in X1, you can see the yearning of a man remembering the first time this other man walked away from him and wishing he knew how to convince him to stay now, like he did then.

Within McKellen randomly name-dropping Charles throughout the trilogy (like when Sabretooth reports the X-Men knew about Rogue and when he’s headed to Alcatraz), you can hear the obsession of a guy embittered by years of opposition but with a secret piece of his heart still living in that moment when he first heard a beautiful voice in his head pulling him back from the darkness.

Within Stewart’s whispered “what’s happened to you?” at the sight of a bruised eye, you can see the grief of a man remembering the sense of a wave of horror and trauma pouring off someone down in the water, and now seeing that same someone has been abused again, and just like then, he wasn’t there to stop it, to protect Erik from getting hurt.

Within their suppressed smiles in the prison scenes and their repartee outside young Jean’s house, you can tell these two banged 40 years ago. You can feel faint echoes of the two guys who once sat on a bed showing off their powers and saying stuff like “more tea, vicar?” and “you’ve never looked more beautiful, darling.” (I even noticed that at the end of X1, in the “I will always be there” exchange, the camera placement leaves their hands out of frame, so they’re obviously touching each other’s arms in that moment but we can’t see exactly where - it makes me imagine that Charles briefly touched Erik’s hand before being wheeled away and that’s why Erik sits frozen for a moment before toppling his king. Again, it’s those actors’ nuances that give birth to these implications.)

Within McKellen’s facial expression of pure anguish and his scream of “CHARLES!” at Jean’s house, you can hear the soul being ripped from the body of a man whose life was, long ago, forever changed by the words “there’s so much more to you than you know, not just pain and anger … there’s good too, I felt it…”

You know two actors are at the top of their game when they’re able to convey the exact history of their two characters long before any actual prequels imprint that history in canon.

I do wonder if Stewart and McKellen watched First Class before they filmed Days of Future Past - it’s impossible to tell because regardless, they once again gave it their all, especially in the Rogue Cut. They took a little sentence “in other words, a door” and a little piece of direction to smirk and nod, and somehow made it one of the most flirtatious/erotic moments of the series. And then of course at the end, they gave us the most heartbreaking moment of the series and one of the top 10 most heartbreaking moments in any comic-book movie ever, period. You know the one.

I’m just so impressed with them for what they started. It all started with them. They knew what they were doing.

Constant Companions Closeup #2: NOT QUITE THERE

Round two of the Constant Companions Closeups - a series of in-depth dives into the songs off of my latest album, Constant Companions! Yesterday was track one, Dyad - today is track two, Not Quite There, featuring the incomparable telebasher!

This one's a bit of a dark horse relative to the rest of the album, but it may very well be my personal favorite song on the entire thing so dammit let's Yap

For the uninitiated, this song pulls heavily from a song off my previous album called Gummyworm, both in vibe and by very directly quoting its synth motif.

Both of these songs deal with two sides of the same emotional coin. I actually don't want to go into too much detail about it - I feel like the lyrics spell things out clearly enough - but I will say this:

When it's all you know, it's easy to believe that a love that isolates you, a love that doesn't respect you, a love that hurts is better than no love at all.

You deserve better. There are always people who genuinely want what's best for you, who want you to feel truly loved. It certainly isn't always easy - it's genuinely good if your interpersonal relationships have a little friction sometimes - but love should make your life brighter.

You deserve a love that's fair.

The original version of this song was actually intended to be on Bittersweet alongside Gummyworm. The original concept for that album had a whole heady concept involving duality, songs reflecting each other, the two halves basically being reprisals of each other... Ultimately, I'm glad I scrapped that idea, because it was waaaaaay too much for me to manage after a couple years of barely making music. Maybe I'll revisit it someday though?

The drums on this song are sampled from an Instagram post by Louis Cole, where he's doing this crazy one-handed hi-hat blast by holding a drumstick sideways. I'm a drummer and that shit genuinely scares me a little like i dont know how he does half the things he does its fucked BUT. I bring this up because he's one of my biggest inspirations as a musician! I'm really big on jazz in general, in case my love for spicy chords wasn't enough of an indication, but his specific brand of freaky hyperactive bullshit just does it for me.

Seriously, go watch his band KNOWER play their song Overtime. Absolutely insane performances across the board. also Clown Core

This whole song is really just my attempt at matching some of that hectic jazzy energy with my own style of music, so I figured it only made sense to make it another collab with another musician making delightfully frantic jazz bullshit - the legend herself, telebasher! I really am such a massive fan of her work, and I struggle to think of anyone who plays guitar quite like she does. We previously worked together on another Bittersweet track, Asemic Speech, and her guitar work is a major reason why that song is still one of my favorite I've ever released!! She's just built different like listen to this oh my god!!!!

Lastly, since this song was one of the first written for this entire project... it is admittedly a case of me shoehorning the album's leitmotif in after the fact. It's a little forced when it shows up in the backing vocals! But, the choir of vocal synths during the guitar solo served an additional purpose - my own voice doesn't show up on the album again for another four entire songs, and this would've otherwise been the only song on the entire album that didn't feature any vocal synths. Thus did I attempt to bridge the gap, as it were. Hopefully it makes the final product feel more natural!!

was a very kickass thesis *cough* she took courses and earned certificates and eventually was made head teacher (yas queen)

is a very very professional individual, strong leadership skills and always several steps ahead, earns her the respect and cooperation of her peers

isnt very social. always working little to no time for pleasantries and small talk. she is a good conversationalist tho, diplomatic and straight to the point. 'no funny business'.

outside of work she lives in a nice flat with her partner, a marine biologist who wants a pet shark named eugenie (after the iconic shark lady eugenie clark :D)

yes its pallas lol. they deserve to be happy okay (the only tragic romances here belong to apollo. sorry bro its for ur own good)

also they have a qpr and im leaving it at that. they dont limit the bond they share with each other by defining it. aww

pallas is kinda the polar opposite of athena, a social (aquatic) buttefly who does well with and enjoys the company of others, she values her space and alone time tho, esp if its with her lil owl

believe it or not she prefers tea over coffee (pallas is the caffeine fiend) and fruits and nuts are her favourite things to snack on

savoury over sweet any day (pallas also has a catastrophic sweet tooth lol) and likes to do all sorts of needlework and fibre art in her spare time

their apartment is full of rugs and throw blankets and embroidery hoops fill the walls and many, many shelves

Flowey! The not so little jerk in this au:) in the full drawing, he's not exactly tall enough to match clovers height, but he's definitely big enough to intimidate a child! Especially frisk, who is smaller than him!

Clover!!!!! I love clover!!!! Hadn't made their full body drawing yet, so here it is!!!! Love them so much<33 they're the character I've drawn the most of in this au, so they deserved it haha! They're 16 years old in this au, but still quite responsible, if sometimes a little reckless with their life at times. Clover might not actually end up being 5"6 specifically, but they're around that height:)

Martlet! First design for her, might not be final, but I really like it right now:)) her colours are quite a bit darker than her sprite and such, but I like it^^

(Also did a drawing of Martlet's arm test how I'd want to draw them in the future but anyway) next is North Star/Starlo! I dulled his colours slightly, (and also gave him a tail cause I've seen a lot of designs that give him a tail, and they're so cute) and also decided on his rough height. (I had looked at height comparison site when deciding this) so he was 6"6 before the mutation, but is currently 7"2:)

Tenko character design is amazing- so why did Danganronpa S fail her

Tenko's original character design character design screams her, so why did Danganronpa S take that away from her?

Tenko’s original character design embodies her as a character especially her personality. Her extra frills (which she added by herself to make them more appealing to women) and her abs (which only women are allowed to touch) socks and sandals multiple hair accessories. Kodaka literally described it as "a fashion disaster that shows off the light-heartedness of a sportsy girl mixed with the harmonious Japanese essence."

(I personally headcanon that when Tenko was at the temple she was reading those teen girl magazines and it said something like "girls love accessories and frills" and she said bet and went a bit overboard.)

Just by looking at Tenko, you can tell that she is a very passionate girl who puts her heart into things and is bubbly and eccentric and that is part of what a character design is supposed to do.

It doesn't just stop at her original design even her Tenko's 10th anniversary outfit reflects her personality. I love the suit top skirt combo, the top hat, her hair etc . I think it's very Tenko, and very pretty.

I don't, however, like Tenko's Danganronpa S swimsuit. In the game, Tenko wears a pink and plaid, two-piece that completely takes away everything I complimented about her character design. Tenko is supposed to be this eccentric character with a bad fashion sense (I guess plaid is a weird pattern for a swimsuit, but still.)

Where are the frills, the cutesy additions to make it appealing to women? It's just plain.

I guess there isn't much you can do with a swimsuit, but on the other hand, I've seen people design way better swimsuits for Tenko that really portray her well and encapsulate what I wish her original design had done. So I guess the devs wanted it to be boring.

@cl4ret-10ko redesign looks like something Tenko would wear and differs from the basic two pieces all the other girls wear especially with the added additions of the inflatable armbands bands and the abs. You can view their amazing redesign here.

And then there's the other side of Tenko's design problem in Danganronpa S, the abs Where are the abs! Kodaka explicitly said she had them so where are they? None of the athletic girls except Sakura have abs, and knowing the fandom i'm pretty sure the majority would love seeing more muscular girls with scars, so I don't know why the devs were being cowards about it.

Tenko's character design was eccentric, passionate, and bold. But Danganronpa S stripped that all away, leaving her with a swimsuit design that could have literally belonged to anyone else. No frills. No chaotic choices. No abs. Just the shell of a girl that was never meant to blend in. If fan artists' swimsuit designs can capture Tenko's essence, what excuses do the devs have? They played it safe and, in doing so, gave us an okay swimsuit and erased everything that made Tenko her.

Tenko deserved so much better.

(And if either artist is uncomfortable with me doing that I will remove it. 👍)

Some more Dark Excalibur AU

The Knighting of Steve Palchuk

We all agree that Steve needed a better arc than what RotT gave him. He deserved a chance to be a hero, a path that he started in Wizards before it fizzled out into being the comedic relief. Wizards set everyone up as the better generational mirrors to Camelot. Jim to Arthur, Claire to Morgana, Douxie to Merlin, Toby probably to Galahad, and Steve very obviously to Lancelot. I've said at the start that no one comes out of this AU unscathed, so while Steve gets the heroic redemption, it comes at a cost, one that pulls on that parallel.

RotT in the Dk-E still happens, I'm not letting everyone get their happily ever after at the end of Wizards. But I'll be damned if I end it with Toby and so many others dead, and Jim pushed into a timeline reset. You can thank Steve for that. It's because of Steve that Toby lives. Steve goes with Toby in the Taco truck, and it is Steve that yanks Toby out of the way of the collapsing debris. But Steve becomes pinned himself, resulting in the loss of his arm. An act of selflessness and bravery, valor and sacrifice, that earns him the title of First Knight of the Roundtable of New Camelot. An equal advisor, responsible for not only the protection of Camelot, and those Jim has claimed as his (which is everyone, human, troll, changeling, down to the last gnome), but also finding and training new knights, those who value all life and are willing to fight to protect it, and want to see the worlds of man and magic together in harmony instead of hate and fear.

And so we come to the Knighting of Steve Palchuk. This isn't just pomp and meaningless ceremony, this has true weight and meaning to both Jim and Steve. Jim pulls on Excalibur's magic, his voice resonating with ethereal power, creating a bond of trust and loyalty that goes both ways, only formed if given willingly. Knight to his King, King to Knight, both to the protection of all worlds and their peoples. Jim's eyes light up in tandem with the blade as the power of Excalibur and Nimue courses through him, flames licking along the blade's edge and into Steve. Steve's armor reflecting this bond as the magic burns through him.

And like Lancelot, Steve will get a fully functional prosthetic arm. There will be hardship, adapting to this new reality. But Steve has become a hero. A man of courage... far from his highscool self. A survivor, who will fight with everything he has.

Rise now, Sir Steve, First Knight of the Roundtable and New Camelot.

in my hc, the timelines goes that henry and william met in college. henry was always more reasonable and personable, but he grew attached to william anyway. William, of course, was (not) very normal about this/. He starts writing about henry in his journal, (An idea from henry, actually, to start journals as a form of self therapy. He was reasonable like that.) EVentually they open up fredbears together and start families. Henry was so in love with his own family and everything was going perfectly for him. He and william were still good friends. William seemed to be a bit more distant to his own family, in fact he was never sure if he had wanted to start it in the first place. Realistically, this is never what he wanted, but he pushed those thoughts on the backburner because anything with Henry was out of the question.

This continues until the first Bite, in which the crying child, his favorite son, dies. His youngest was always his favorite because he learned quick. Evan learned from Micheal and Will's interactions not to talk or fight back or he would be in trouble. He learned from his sister not to bother dad because "kids should only speak when spoken to." He was the perfect child to William because he never got in the way or complained.

Upon Evan's death, William is devastated. And like a savior, Henry is there. Henry is there to keep him from being alone (and also to make sure he's not too cruel in Michael's punishments, deserved or not). William tries to absorb himself in his engineering to distract from the death, but it's not enough. He keeps obsessing over it while building, while doing anything, and as it keeps ramping up he keeps leaning on Henry as a crutch, but even he can't keep Will's head above water.

One day, William is brimming with rage. He runs an establishment for all these happy families, the same establishment that tore apart his own. His best friend at the center of it, never truly knowing his grief. And one day, a crime of passion inspired by rage and wanting to be recognized and selfishness over the attention of his friend, who was ready to move on before he was, led to six dead kids, most noteably Charlotte, Henry's daughter. Panic sets in midway through the murders but he knows he can't just let them go now. In a fit of terror he stuffs them in spare suits, intending to return the next day with more time and dispose of them properly. As he leaves, though, they speak. They scream and they cry and they curse and William runs back home, horrified.

Henry is devastated. His poor baby girl, missing, the one time he looks away from her. The police are searching, he and his wife are crying, and Sammy doesnt understand why his twin sister isn't coming home. He takes his first day off work in years. Upon returning, he is greeted by William. How kind of him to run the place in Henry's absence, to keep it so clean. Oh, and that paperwork that bothered him so much is finally complete. And these sweet, understanding words from somebody who truly understands his grievances, all this is all he could really hope for. Will sounded so sure of his words, "They'll find her, she can't be far," the way he spoke so matter-of-factly and allowed Henry to fall limp in his arms made it seem like maybe it would really be okay.

Days pass, it isn't okay. Weeks. Months. In the absence of Charlie, it feels like William is the only one really there for him. It isn't okay. He keeps an old doll his daughter loved with him, and in his spare time he sobs and sobs and sobs into it, filling it with deep agony that only made it harder to look at. He had begun treating it like a new daughter, going so far as to build an animatronic around the doll, something of hers that could bring her back to life. But it wasn't just Charlie in that doll anymore, it was the deep sorrow of her father that fueled the machine. After enough of this, his wife leaves him and takes Sammy with her, overwhelmed and exhausted by Henry's ever-increasing delusion.

Now he really only does have William (and his metallic simulacra of paternal love). They spend more time together, and the dream of the original Fredbear's dies out as both seem to lose interest.

William's wife leaves him at some point as well, or just disappears, his story is unclear. He claims they had a heated argument about how neglectful he was to her and his family, at which point she packed up and left. There's been no way to contact her since.

At one point, William leaves his journal out. He's left the room for a few minutes, and Henry can't help but be curious. He starts from the beginning, a wholesome and slow start where William writes in very short and objective sentences, unsure of how to utilize the journal. As time goes on he seems much more passionate and full of life, around the height of Fredbear's. By this point Henry has managed to pinpoint exactly how William had felt about him this entire time, his writing seemed so much more jovial and near childish when writing about Henry. He chose to respectfully ignore this fact for Will's sake.

On the day of the bite, the handwriting is light and unsure of itself. Most of the pages after this point seem to be tear stained and/or partially torn. It's a sad thing to read this man's grief. The writing is back to the disjointed and discordial structure from the beginning, when they first met. As the pages go on, he seems to have regained his confidence, but he's still clearly a broken man. The pages go on tangents, his writing is harsh and jagged, occasionally leaving holes in the paper. Phrases repeat themselves, words fall off the lines, and Henry's name appears a lot more than he was comfortable with before.

The day of his daughter's supposed 'disappearance.' The writing is the most loopy and inane it's been thus far, but upon decoding it, overwhelming fear floods his heart. A confession. Blatant admittance and graphic description.

Henry slams the book shut, horrified and betrayed. His friend, his closest and best friend, his only friend-- took everything from him. He took everything and gave him relief piece by piece, acting like nothing was wrong for months. Acting innocent for months while Henry sobbed and wept in his shoulders and gave him everything he had left: his mind.

Henry leaves William and cuts him off entirely. He closes himself up in his house with his craft. He still can't bring himself to turn William in. He keeps trying to build Charlie, he builds more of her and tries to perfect her so that maybe, just maybe he can keep a piece of his old life. But nothing is right still; she is made of metal and fear and anger and betrayal and she will never be his dear Charlotte. He keeps working anyway, it doesn't even seem to be about love anymore. He even neglects her, seeing her only as the versions of her he's built and discarded. Not the version she would've grown to be.

He dies in that house to the only thing he could ever trust, his metal and his hands.

So! while bat membranes can in fact heal themselves, I think at this point veils

(1) has been fighting so much and so frequently that its body just can't sustain the healing anymore, and thus the healing process has started to slow down considerably and begun showing scars

and

(2) Veils is very impatient and refuses to rest its wings, so they had to be mended

additionally, it has litle diamond-shaped reinforcement points to stop tears from splitting further or wearing further. (maybe I'll add more at the top next time instead of the bottom)

the three markings under its neck on its ruff are meant to resemble blood! because i am a sucker for both tragedy And meaningful or literal fur markings

it wears glasses! mostly as part of a costume and for Fashion, and to help it appear more intelligent. however, after centuries of fine detail work, veils has become... a little far sighted, and just may actually need them for closeup work.

it's greying, because old money, wealth, power, experience, and i think it deserves some grey fur <3

the bat species it's based on is the Spectral Bat, or the Great False Vampire bat! because ghosts, pretending to be what it's not, and also those bats are Viscious in a way i think suits veils Very Well

hanzashiro rambles

thinking about hanzawa and tashiro again and their pingpong-esque relationship, how tashiro will say the craziest things to him (that no one else will dare to say) and hanzawa just hits him back with the same attack formation. they're both always on the offensive just like in pingpong and i love that about them, they both just hit each other with stuff and keep going with it. equals of their own right, like kghr. tashiro trying to bridge that gap between them and beat him at pingpong until hanzawa's...gone now, graduated. did the gap then disappear?

thinking about hirano laughing uproariously at just kagi eating his cookie so eagerly "Hahaha, I s-see!" and hanzawa killing himself laughing at just tashiro's favourite subject being gym "PFFFT…PFFT-ppppfft…I-I see…" there's something there too

hanzawa's roommate's name rhyming with tashiro is funny to me too like, im sure it's nothing, but consider if it's not

hanzawa staring daggers down at a head-bowed tashiro in the pizza extra as a seated kuresawa stares hard at tashiro....flashing forward to the guidebook extra where tashiro talks about the post-sempai loneliness as kuresawa pushes his white lensed glasses up in his classic i-know-something-secret style... i'm sorry, that extra honestly deserves its own separate ramble but jeez the hanzashiro is so so so heavy, the chapter starting with a hanzawa who transitions into tashiro-esque whiny (lovingly) and then curiously after, opens up into tashiro's viewpoint, also lamenting not being yelled at anymore, he must lowkey enjoy that on some level... not even to mention the exact same wide eyed look shared at them both on separate pages, in separate directions, one realizing his attachment while the other realizes his separation

and since im rambling in every direction i also just remembered miyano mentioning in his grad voice msg that hanzawa had brought up his own love life with him????????????? and it sounded like he barely said much because miyano remained VERY INTERESTED to hear more. insanity. csf leaking everywhere. wdym he talked to you about his love life. no one else.

lastly. about guidebook extra tashiro: "It's gonna be just a little lonely...when the sempai are gone." so yknow how rn in kghr, Hirano is starting off where kagi was in like vol1 chp 1(?) with his romantic development, like when Hirano was in the stands at kagi's bball game and kagi found him and smiled super wide, and then the same thing but reverse happened in chp 24, showing his romantic development is literally starting from the very beginning like when kagi's did and took the time to fully blossom (that was all @burrythebusy 's bigbrain) WELL HEAR ME OUT BUT this is tashiro's ground zero. him and hanzawa were both shown, closeup might I add, to be starting to miss everyone/everything too, very interesting that those two characters in specific were shown closer-up by sensei. I think the end of highschool is ground zero for them, for their connection growing further and sensei beginning to write/show more about them and their development. gap is gone baybeee

Godzilla Design Runway: Showa

Having finished my film watch, I've decided to make some followup posts going over my thoughts on certain aspects of the films I didn't go over in the retrospective, starting with Godzilla's design over the years, as well as the designs of derivative Kaiju. Photos sourced from Wikizilla.

ShodaiChonki (1954) The first Showa suit is arguably the best, particularly when it comes to detail and physical presence. This extra heft limits the suit's physical capabilities, but it served its role beautifully in the first film as a massive, ponderous beast. The only fault is the mismatch between the puppet and suit designs: despite the former's role in hero shots I think the latter has the more appealing face. It has an iconic dragonish air to it that many later suits homaged, but few truly captured.

Clump Scringly (1955) Similar to the films they appeared in, the second Godzilla suit has all the trappings of the original but little of the substance. GyakushuGoji's gangly proportions and oddly shaped head vacillate between comedic and unnerving. The closeup puppet certainly more alarming, with its gigantic teeth jutting out of the maw.

Simpgoji (1962) One of the more distinctly reptilian takes on the character, with its angular, lizard-like face. While it's not my personal favorite, it works very well as a contrast to the mammalian Kong. It also deserves credit for setting the template for all following Showa suits, simplifying some of the details to hold up better against the rigors of kaiju brawls.

Ol' Grumpus (1964) One of the most iconic suits, popularizing the anthropomorphized look that would define Godzilla for the rest of the Showa period, while still retaining plenty of detail. His talon-like claws provide an interesting contrast to his large eyes and ornery expression: the suit works for both comedy and menace.

Kermit the Kaiju (1965-1966) A fairly middle of the road Showa design. Similar to MosuGoji, but a lot of the finer details were lost in translation. The reduced claws make sense for Godzilla entering his heroic stage, but I miss the more defined expression and facial features from the previous suit.

Dad of Boi (1967) Arguably the worst of the Toho designs. Facial structure is a massive factor in a suit's overall impression, and MusukoGoji's frog-like features are a major flop. It's funny that they deliberately redesigned Godzilla to be more like his son, rather than designing the latter to be less rancid.

The Cursed Child, Part 1 (1967) I've said it before, but a major misstep was trying to make Minilla look like a human infant, rather than something like a puppy or a kitten. The result in a very uncanny design, especially in his larval form.

The Cursed Child, Part 2 (1967-1969) Unfortunately Minilla does not improve much with age. His gigantic brows, bulging eyes, and pig like nose seem to be an extension of Godzilla's ongoing anthropomorphism, but taking the idea to this extreme lands Minilla deep in the uncanny valley. The donkey braying doesn't help.

Old Faithful (1968-1972) The suit with the longest run, SoshingekiGoji stands out among the later Showa designs with it's fierce appearance. It fits well in Destroy All Monsters, where Godzilla is antagonistic for the bulk of the film, but it feels oddly dissonant once Godzilla really starts to embrace his heroic role, though not altogether unwelcome.

Puppy of Justice (1973-1975) The teddybear of Godzilla suits, MegaroGoji is the culmination of the Showa series march towards a more childish tone. It certainly fits its debut film well, with its friendly expression and pillowy dorsal plates. I do think its more serious countenance in the Mechagodzilla duology was a good improvement, giving the heroic appearance a slightly fiercer edge.

Fake Godzilla (1974) The Showa Mechagodzilla is still my favorite iteration of the character, with its harshly geometric appearance, retro charm, and endless arsenal. I also like its disguise's more menacing facial features, though I wish it was more consistently portrayed using the new suit rather than switching between it and MegaroGoji.

The Actual Mechagodzilla 2 (1975) An iterative improvement on the first design, MG2's more angular features and grungier finish suit its movie's darker tone. It also has the honor of being the oldest surviving Toho suit, albeit only in combination with its predecessor's lower half. Of the two, I say I'd prefer the second version over the original, but they are both only slight variations on the same iconic design.

Mia's Relationships in TWST—Part 1/2

(Part 2)

I've been seeing people do these things with their MCs, and it looked like fun, so I decided to join in! And I have a bonus closeup of Mia's more-or-less-accurate sprite because I really like the armband I made.✨✨ (Pretend she's got black stud earrings and matching combat boots.) I sort of took this as a general progression of thoughts and opinions amongst everyone and went from there. Mia's pretty much chill with mostly everyone, but she has her moments of not giving a hoot to a select few. I'll be giving some more details on everyone's relationships under the cut, so off we go! (Original chart/template is from here, and the Picrew I used to make Mia's little sprite is here.)

Ramshackle

• Grim: At first, both he and Mia were pretty indifferent towards each other. Mia didn't really have the patience to pay attention to some flaming cat she just met when she had her own problems to deal with, and Grim didn't need some human getting in the way of his plans to become a great mage. But over time, after they got to know each other, they grew to like one another, and now they're pretty good friends. Although he often drives her insane and she can be a "stick in the mud," according to him, I'm sure they'll both defend each other if it comes down to it. (He's literally the only cat she will ever like.)

Heartslabyul

• Riddle: Much like with Grim, Riddle and Mia were kinda neutral towards each other. She simply viewed him as a seriously uptight dorm leader, while he simply saw her as another student who generally abided by the rules despite her being very outspoken towards everyone—including those in authority, so to speak. But eventually they came around to like each other, and now they're casual friends.

• Ace: Mia actually didn't like him at first. He was a jerk in her eyes, so she gave him a piece of her mind whenever he acted like one. Meanwhile, aside from snapping back at her snapping at him, he didn't really pay much attention to her. Eventually they grew to like each other (while bickering the whole time), and now they're pretty close. She arguably views him as one of her best friends, but she won't admit that out loud. And it's the same on his end, too.

• Deuce: Generally, Mia thought he was all right, but not much else. She did come to like him a bit faster than she did with Ace, and now she pretty much considers him her best friend, too. But she won't admit that out loud, either. On Deuce's end, he actually came to like her fairly easily, so it was also kinda easy for him to eventually view her as one of his best friends. Although he lowkey enjoys watching her go off on people who totally deserve it, he and Ace do have to hold her back on occasion. Friends don't let friends get into fights, after all.

• Cater: Yeah, Mia didn't really pay him any mind for a while, but now she generally thinks he's all right. Just a little too obsessed with Magicam for her taste. Cater, meanwhile, easily came to like her, even though she can be a little tense at times. ("C'moooon, ease up a little!" "This is me easing up.")

• Trey: They both came to like each other fairly easily since they're both generally grounded and level-headed. She does like how patient he can be, considering who he has to deal with every day, and he very much appreciates her keeping an eye on Ace and Deuce. So they're currently pretty casual friends.✨✨

Savanaclaw

• Leona: He and Mia were very indifferent towards each other and pretty much let the other be, if they could. Although it took a bit for them to like each other, they're pretty cool with one another now. Leona likes her no-nonsense attitude and respects her completely, and Mia thinks he's all right for a guy who chooses to opt out of things often.

SPOILERS FOR CLOUDCALLING/TAMASHINA MINA EVENT: after they win the tournament, they have an inside joke where they'll call each other by the other's name (Mia'll call Leona by her name and vice versa). They get a kick out of confusing everyone who wasn't part of the tournament gang.

• Jack: I think both of them didn't really think much of the other until maybe Books 2 and 3, more or less. Then they came to like each other before eventually becoming pretty good friends. Both of them do come to secretly view each other as siblings, but neither of them are gonna be admitting that any time soon.

• Ruggie: These two pretty much left each other alone despite suspecting that they should probably keep an eye on one another. Ruggie's a little sneak and Mia can wring people a new one if you try her enough. But eventually they came around to liking each other. Considering his background and her growing up in an orphanage looking out for only herself and her twin brother Marco, they basically have an unspoken "street-ish kids gotta stick together" agreement. (And Ruggie has definitely reminded her of some of the kids she grew up with a handful of times.)

Octavinelle (oh boy)

• Azul: While he came to like Mia fairly quickly in a general sense, she actually didn't really like him at first. He was a sleazy con artist to her, so he definitely saw her rough side pretty early on, especially during Book 3. As time went on, she decided that he was all right and respected his insane intelligence and business knowledge. And eventually, she came to see him as a little more than a casual friend, with Azul also coming to see her as a friend as well. He likes how determines she is to get things done on her own, no matter what, and it's something he can respect. (Sometimes I see them as a joke ship, but I already have her paired with another character of mine.😅)

• Jade and Floyd: Like with Azul, she pretty much disliked them at first since they were in league with him and were basically schemers like he was. The twins liked her pretty early on, however, and they found her entertaining. (They still do.) Eventually she became pretty indifferent towards them with her usual bite having been lessened some time after Book 3, but now she thinks they're all right. Of course, when they find out that she's also a twin, things get a little funner. (Floyd demands a competition for twin dominance.)

Scarabia

• Kalim: Since he's so genuine with his kindness and very open with everyone, Mia generally came to like him pretty easily. And so she currently views him as a casual friend. Of course, Kalim, being how he is, almost immediately viewed her as a friend. And hey, he's heard she likes bird watching, so he could totally invite her over to Scarabia and introduce her to all the birds there. And maybe let them out for a bit so they can stretch their wings. Just don't tell Jamil.

• Jamil: He's the opposite of Kalim and is seemingly calmer than him, so Mia didn't think much of him at first. As for Jamil, he probably didn't think much of her, either, but he had heard about her infamous non-existent filter and putting even Savanaclaw students in line. So those were some pins he put in about Ramshackle's Prefect.

It was probably a little after Book 4 when they started liking each other. And eventually they came to view each other as good friends. I'm pretty sure their bond really strengthened during the NRC group's stay at Ramshackle for VDC, so they had plenty of time to chat and get to know each other more.✨✨

Pomefiore

• Vil: He and Mia didn't really have any problems coming to like each other. She respected his willingness to get his hands dirty to work hard, and Vil liked that she didn't take any nonsense from anyone and was very willing to work hard for what she wanted on her own terms. Probably also like with Jamil during Book 5, they had some time to bond and get to know each other more during his stay at Ramshackle for VDC. Book 6 is probably when they really solidified their friendship and became nice casual friends.

• Epel: Mia actually didn't pay much attention to him since to her, he seemed like just a quiet guy she'd have a few short conversations with. Epel, meanwhile, had heard a lot about her giving people a piece of her mind and occasionally giving a few unlucky students a right hook if they pushed her buttons too much. So he came to like her fairly easily. Of course, once she got to know him, she came to like him a lot. And eventually they became pretty close friends that wouldn't snitch when the other went off—especially when Epel is the one losing his cool.

• Rook: While he almost immediately came to like Mia, she pretty much let him and his eccentricities be for a good while. It probably wasn't until sometime during Book 5 that she came around to liking him. So he's pretty all right in her book now. They probably did get a little closer during Book 6, though.

Ignihyde

• Idia: Yeah, she was very indifferent towards him for a good while. He's extremely introverted, so she pretty much left him to his own devices. It was the same for Idia, too, but he also actively avoided her as much as possible since he was kinda intimidated by her. (He's heard about her attitude. He wasn't about to activate combat mode.) But eventually they came around to liking each other. Mia doesn't mind that he's quiet unless his interests are involved, and whenever they are, she just lets him talk about them nonstop. On Idia's end, he does appreciate that she's one of the few chill people in a sea of extroverts. He's also a little less intimidated by her now, so he's got that going for him. A simple "hey" from her in the hallway doesn't terrify him as much as before.

• Ortho: These two basically came to like each other pretty easily, so it wasn't hard for them to get along and become nice casual friends. She's probably mentioned her brother Marco to him a few times, and Ortho, being as curious as he is, probably asked a lot of questions that she didn't really mind answering.

Diasomnia (:3)

• Malleus: He just randomly showed up outside her dorm one night and just kept popping in at random intervals ever since. It seemed like a hobby for him, so she was pretty indifferent towards him for a bit. Meanwhile, he came to like her fairly easily and was very amused by her rather relaxed demeanor despite the "rumors" he's heard about the Prefect's sharp attitude. The more Mia spoke with him, however, the more she came to like him, and eventually they became pretty good friends. And he has a knack for visiting Ramshackle whenever she's having a restless night due to missing Marco, so she's glad that she can have someone like him to talk to. (But she's not that great with expressing her emotions, so she'll probably have trouble admitting that.)

• Silver: Him and Mia got along pretty easily, so it didn't take too long for them to like each other. Even though he can be pretty rigid, she does eventually come to view him as a really nice friend, and he comes to view her the same as well. (He also picks up that she doesn't express emotions all that well, so I guess that's kind of a thing they have in common, which he appreciates.)

Since one of his lines (I don't remember from which card) mentions the MC having the potential to be good with a sword, Mia does eventually take him up on the offer (maybe after Book 4?) and asks him to teach her. She also likes bird watching, so he does show her some good spots to find birds—unless they come to him first.😂

• Sebek: Boy did they start out rough. Considering his distaste towards humans and Mia having no problem telling jerks off, they really didn't like each other. So there was a good chance they clashed sometimes, probably almost as often as she did with Ace. Eventually, they both decided it wasn't worth wasting their energy arguing and left each other alone for a good while whenever they could. I'm not exactly sure when they start liking each other, but it's probably during Book 7. But after begrudgingly finally getting to know each other, they supposed they could see each other as friends. They both share a determination to see things through, and he will admit that Silver has taught her how to use a sword passably enough. (He could teach her better, though.)

• Lilia: He and Mia actually got along pretty well, so it was easy for them to like each other. He liked her spirit and she thought he was pretty cool, so I think they've had some pretty fun conversations with one another. He does come to see that behind her relaxed demeanor, she can be very guarded towards new people, choosing to entertain light casual conversations and not much else. So he is a little happy to see that over time, she's learned to lower her guard just a bit and be a little more trusting towards people.

Same anon and yes that devastating piece was the one I was talking about! :D AAAA, your post about the closeups on Till's collar was what inspired me to take a closer look and it just clicked Thank you so much for entertaining my silly ask!! I love how you described the arches of light and went further into the kind of lonely/alone Till and Luka are, I knew you'd like the detail! Also how you worded that they're all under scorching lights... Let me give you one more heartwrenching parallel for the soul!

It's so very similar to the Ivantill meteor shower, but notice how artificial and static the lights coming from the stages in both instances are compared to the meteor shower, which most likely was outside the garden. The illusion of freedom, but never free, do with that what you will! :)

ANON *jumping up and down* HI AGAIN

The collar comparisons between Rounds 2, 6, and 7 are really interesting to me. I noticed them completely by accident but now I can’t stop thinking about it. In R2, Till is held back by the leash—he’s just rebellious and unpredictable enough to be a threat (clearly. Rip Freddie) and yet something keeps him metaphorically tied to Alien Stage, too, which caused him to run back to Anakt Garden, speaking of that meteor scene. Did he go back for Mizi, or did he simply believe he didn’t deserve escape, the latter theory which has been floated recently? In R6 he doesn’t need the leash anymore because he’s too defeated and drained to attempt anything crazy. Obviously Ivan took care of the excitement factor for him there, but the collar/choker in that round is such a taunt. He’s not tied to anything he can see, but he’s held down more than ever. Ivan’s sacrifice woke him up. It was his cure. In R7 he’s not attached to anything, and even his collar is merely an ornament.

ANYWAY COLLAR RANT ASIDE—another scene comparison I’m going to chew on things 😬 Ugh, you’re so right, the contrast of the bright, pounding lights of the stage and then the natural, softer, but no less brilliant lights of the real sky… during the meteor scene, Till and Ivan are so tantalizingly close to freedom, but like I mentioned in the collar rant, Till is tied to the garden, and Ivan himself is only tied to Till, so when Till goes back, he follows like he has no choice. In his mind there probably was no choice. A life without Till? Unimaginable.

And now Till is free of the leash with seemingly nothing but a thin collar holding him back, because we know he wants to explode. He wants to fight. Ivan gave him that fight back. But he’s in front of… maybe millions of aliens. He’s about to face the prince and face of those millions. He’s the closest and the furthest he’s ever been from freedom all at once. Ivan was the last person keeping him tethered to this competition; emotionally, he’s ready to be free from this place.

Physically, he’s literally never been more screwed.

I don't really write simple and straightforward love songs much!! Love is absolutely a core aspect of my songwriting, and I love a lot of people and a lot of things, but even when I invoke romantic love, it's usually not entirely literal? If that makes sense.

But, like, c'mon. I'm a lesbian. I love women with the best of 'em. Sometimes I just wanna be gay! Especially on an album as fraught with emotional moments as Constant Companions is, I feel like it's really important to have at least one simple moment to settle on.

Well okay. I like yuri. I like vocal synths. And maybe my himejoshi ass likes making certain combinations of vocal synths do gay shit lesbian style.

I love the band Phoenix. I'll be completely honest and tell you that I first heard their music when Lisztomania and 1901 came out as DLC for Rock Band 2 but hey that's how a lot of people my age found a lot of music when they were younger probably. Their album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix was one of a couple major sonic touchstones for how I wanted Constant Companions to sound - bouncy, warm, synthetic-yet-natural, with multiple shades of idiosyncrasies - but Liaison in particular was a pretty bold-faced attempt to directly evoke their music, at least in terms of arrangement.

Now, I'm not well-read or French enough to fully match the bright-eyed abstract lyricism or historical knowledge of their songwriting completely - but I can be Jamie Paige about it, reference Arthurian legend, and quote another freaking song I wrote

🤼‍♀️, also known as :women_wrestling:, isn't the gayest song I've ever written, but it's certainly up there, and it gets referenced pretty heavily in Liaison. Maybe this is the aftercare once they're done in the ring? Maybe there are more complicated layers hiding beneath the saccharine sweetness of these hopeless lovers...

Maybe I'm just gay. Ever consider that, huh?

That being said, for reasons I won't go into here, there's some amount of the vocal synth fandom that interpret Solaria and ANRI as being in a sort of toxic embittered lesbian situationship... which does make the layers a little more interesting... though if you ask me? I think lesbians deserve to be happy. What about that you shithead
