Perfection is not transformative
part 1/? (maybe I'll make a part 2?)
This is a phrase I thought of when considering Claire's relationship with Carmy. I can't see a cohesive (as well as engaging) relationship between the two with how Claire was presented in Season 2.
The scene in "Fishes" of Michael, Richie and Stevie giving him shite about Claire gave me some serious ick vibes and like I'm sure someone has mentioned is probably one of the things (or thee thing) Carmen was talking about in Al-Anon in s2 ep3 about anything that provided amusement or enjoyment always got kinda fked up, I don't think they (his family) meant to but sometimes they try too hard... (The moment Richie shared with Tiff they're trying to set him up with Claire and she says why would you do that she's so nice made me reel back a little, especially knowing how things turn out in their relationship and the fact she's with Richie lol. But I do feel for them as it's implied neither had good families, the judgement behind that comment just took me by surprise).
Writing this at past 2am so wrapping this up, but I can only see Claire and Carmy staying together if 1) they develop Claire's character and 2) Carmy heals from his family trauma (thus disassociating Claire from his past, which I don't think will happen in the show tbh).
Like I think about their relationship and I can't imagine anything, like what direction would it go? How would Carmy (or either of them) become better if Claire is perfect? Even if Sydney and Carmy don't become a thing (I flip flop on how I feel about them rn), I just can't conjure how a Claire and Carmy relationship would work.

The way I just know their stomachs were knotted like fists at that Christmas dinner in 2x06. They had to know deep down they weren’t ever going to eat that food despite the fact they’d probably been fasting for it all day. At that point it was too late. The tension was already steeped so deeply into their bones that even if the dinner table never got flipped (RIP I bet those seven fishes slapped) nobody would’ve been enjoying their meal bc everyone would feel sick to their stomachs. family drama at the dinner table is just like that it infects you like a parasite and eats away at your gut

god there were so many moments in that episode i just.......
Richie noticing....
the timers....
i just...i don't even...still processing. still processing....
what a genius fucking show
also i fully support Mikey throwing the forks. the next episode is titled "Forks."
the fucking matching outfits
Bear. Bear. Bear. Bear.....
(those were four separate bears, obviously)
lol i wonder how many times Mrs. Berzatto has threatened suicide. (i say this as someone who's mother has threatened suicide many times)
why do i have it in my head seven fishes was for seven apostles? maybe someone made that up once... part of my family does the seven fishes thing but they usually end up doing like 11? or 13? they're not strict with the number.
i love Richie.
i love what this season is doing.
this show is so good.

NAH, but imagine this:
Sydney insists to meet Carmy's family so they go to a family dinner. Carmy tries to get her to not go but Sydney insists so they go.
She's overwhelmed by the chaos, Claire was invited so it's unbeliavbly awkward and the day is going horribly aside from Fak antics and a heart to heart with Michelle.
Sydney is told to say a prayer similar to what happened in "Fishes". She says it in her classic Sydney manner and it's beautiful, the camera is slowly zooming in on her face, and people at the table say it's beautiful and all that.
THEN Carmy says "I love you" and it pans to him- it was a knee-jerk reaction, it slipped and he looks at Sydney like she's his purpose for living. The whole table is silent. Sydney begins to say his name but he kisses her. GAH.
Watched the end of beginning Carmy edit and all of his “family” forcing him to say I love you and like what if Carmy tells Sydney he loves her first?!?! Like I might die on the spot actually. I really don’t think I could handle that. But I need it

As Chef Keller said in the season finale- Just remember, right? It's all about nurturing.

i think the part that gets me is that carmy's apology is practically her getting ambushed. when he raises his voice and then she does it right back but he apologizes immediately. it's not like the yelling stops (it CAN'T stop they're in a stressful setting) but sydney immediately has to stop trying to communicate her side.
i probably am super far off but i finished season 2 of the bear and the way carmy apologizes to syd and the way her dad reassures her both feel so dismissive? i don't know. because they're well intentioned of course and they genuinely mean it but somehow they overtake her turn to speak. they're also both so supportive of her, they're not being assholes but her dad's reassurances at times feel weirdly pessimistic and it's like carmy apologises to shut down her arguments (very valid ones too) even when they're being genuine

I rewatched the Bear 2x06 yesterday and caught so many details I missed the first two times I watched it (it’s not insane to watch an episode three times I promise). one thing I noticed is that Mikey definitely does tell the same stories over and over. Like I find it endearing and I love him but it’s definitely happening. In one scene I could hear him in another room retelling the Bill Murray story from season one LMAO

righteous gemstones does not get enough credit for having multiple flashback episodes per season and having them be just as interesting and well-acted as the present day storylines. i’m so used to shows that have fun little one-off flashback episodes that you can take or leave, but i am never bummed when it’s a flashback episode of gemstones. that’s all i have to say lol.

I know there are a ton of deserving actors out there, but I would really love to see Liza Colón-Zayas get some serious awards recognition in the supporting actress categories for season 3 of The Bear. She's been fantastic in the show since season 1 (the way you can be so pissed at Tina on Sydney's behalf for 4 straight episodes, but then so viscerally feel how intense and genuine the shift in Tina's perspective and emotion is when she realizes she's misjudged Syd). Getting her own character focused episode this season (which was personally one of, if not my favorite, episodes this season [so also shout out to Ayo for directing such a pitch perfect episode]) I hope will result in more recognition for what she brings to the show. Tina is the character who has made me cry every season and from such a wide range of emotion, too. How can you not feel what Tina feels?
