all your fault / reader x Ren (Tokyo Debunker)

included characters: just ren!
rating: sfw
warnings: tsundere. dreaded there was only one bed trope. reader is forced to watch shakma.
What started as an innocent, âMy door is always open,â offer to a tired, gaming withdrawing Ren became a habit you had no desire to break. You walked him back to your place after his shift at the diner and after your classes let out. He would sneak out of Jabberwock to bring a new terrible horror movie to watch. You would find an excuse to back out of plans so you would be able to be home when he would likely stop by.
It was almost starting to feel like he lived there.
You hopped up on your bed next to him, leaning up against the wall and settling in. âWhat are we watching tonight?â
He so rarely looked excited, but there was a mischievous, almost manic enthusiasm in his eyes, âShakma.â
You stared at him.Â
He set his laptop up on his legs and opened up the movie site.
âThe movie with the killer monkey?â You ventured.
âYes. Itâs so bad.â He was giddy. In his own way.
Taking a deep breath, you pulled your blanket over your legs and accepted your fate. It wouldnât be the first horrible, no good, very bad movie heâd made you watch.
The movie was worse than bad. The movie was so bad that the weather outside went from a cloudless night to a rolling thunderstorm. You jumped once at a particularly loud thunder clap and he had mocked you, asking if you were actually scared of the killer monkey.
âIâm not scared of the killer monkey,â you scoffed, âIâm scared of my shitty cathedral room getting flooded by the storm.â
Ren was too invested in the evil baboon killing med students to react with much nuance, âThat would suck.â
The rest of the movie passed (thankfully, it seemed like it would never end) and Ren enjoyed every second of the awful film. You could appreciate his excitement, it was cute to see him so focused and invested. The light of the laptop screen flashed against his face, illuminating his eyes and accentuating his handsome features. Honestly, most of the movie you were imagining snuggling up to him, maybe using his shoulder as a pillow, and thatâs what kept you from going completely insane from the terrible direction of the âplot.â You knew if you actually tried to do anything like that, heâd complain about harassment and whine until you apologized and it might just ruin everything you had with him.
You respected his boundaries, anyway, and knew that your fantasies would go unfulfilled. You were happy enough just being friends with him, getting to know about his bad taste in movies, opening whatever links he sent you to replenish his game stamina, and even starting a game or two yourself because he wanted the referral credits. Ah, the lengths you went to for this ungrateful boy.
The credits rolled and he pulled out his phone immediately, logging in to one of his mobile games to collect dailies. It must have been past midnight already. He was like a living alarm for you. You knew what hour it was based on him opening up whatever game on his phone, they all had different reset times, and this one was midnight.
Stretching your legs, you climbed up on your knees and leaned over his legs, bracing yourself against the foot-board to look out your window. The storm hadnât let up, and you watched a torrent of rain rage against your window. The trees bowed outside from the sheer force of the wind and as you watched, a flash of lighting touched down, turning your room almost white from the brightness.
âWhat are you doing?â He asked, distracting you from your inspection.
Still bent over on your knees, you answered, âI donât think the rain is going to let up.â You pushed yourself back and sat back down next to him.
If the laptop had a brighter color than black on the screen, you would have seen him blushing. For once, he was lucky, and the credits had given away to a black pause screen that kept you in the dark about his reaction. âGreat,â he complained instead. âIâll have to walk home in the dark and during a storm.â
You frowned, âMaybe itâll be really bad for now, and then lessen up in a bit if you want to wait?â
He was quiet, and you knew he wasnât doing anything important in the game since he just opened up the character menu, checked their stats, and then swiped to another one. He knew all of that information already by heart, he was just distracting himself and trying to appear casual. âDonât you have an early morning tomorrow?â
You did, actually, and it surprised you he remembered it. Your surprise must have shown on your face, because he scowled at you before you could answer.
âDonât look at me like that. I donât ignore everything you sayâŠâ He pouted.
You bit back a smile, âJust 90% of it?â You teased.
â...40%.â He answered.
âAw, so everything about how you really should treat Haru more nicely you ignore?â You poked his shoulder.
He turned his head away, âNow Iâm ignoring you.â
You rolled your eyes with a smile and fell back onto your pillow, propping your knees up so you didnât kick him. You were nice to him, even when he didnât deserve it. âI do have an early morning tomorrow, but I donât want you to drown out there or get struck by lightning or something, so I wonât kick you out.â
Ren set down his phone and steadied his laptop, more unnecessary movements to stall for time.Â
âYou donât have to stay,â You promised him, softening your voice as to not startle him, âI have an umbrella somewhere around here if youâd be more comfortable going home.â It wasnât your intention to push him or to try to break any boundaries he had very clearly set. Ren wasnât a⊠touchy, emotional guy. He was stubborn, he was pessimistic, and he had a very small social battery. In the time you had known him, you knew he didnât like casual touches, he didnât respond well to verbal affection, and he could barely tolerate even calling you a friend. You understood these things and you would never want to put him in a situation where he felt obligated to put up with something that made him uncomfortable.
Another minute of silence passed, and you rolled to your side and prepared to search for that umbrella. He spoke up before you could stand fully, âYou donât expect me to sleep on the floor or something, do you?â
You bounced lightly back down on the bed. Did he really want to stay? âNoâŠâ but you only had the one bed.
He pushed his laptop further away from him, expression fully readable. He was uncertain, torn between the discomfort of walking home while the storm blew branches off of the trees and the discomfort of sleeping in a comparatively warm bed. With you. His friend who he couldnât stop going to almost every day. Who he spent most of his time with, who didnât run his social battery to empty, and who never tried to force him to do anything he didnât want to do. You had just watched a truly despicable movie with him, not complaining, not nagging him to pick something else. You never asked for any kind of payment for your company and care.Â
Would it really be that bad?
His cheeks flushed again at his own line of thinking and he looked out the window to avoid you seeing it. Your room was dark, only a few candles lighting up small radiuses around the room. You wouldnât have even really been able to see it if he had stayed facing you.Â
You thought carefully. You really didnât want to send him out in the rain, and you were worried that he was going to do just that if you didnât fix the situation quickly. What was one night on your own cold, rickety, dusty floor? It would just be one of the many things you dealt with for him, âI donât mind sleeping on the floor-â
He groaned, âDonât be a martyr. Itâs fine, we always sit on your bed to watch movies anyway. How different can it be?â
~~~
You took some time snuffing out your candles, changing into your most normal, modest, and not embarrassing pajamas possible. He had left a bag in your room one day that had a pair of spare joggers and a t-shirt from when he had to change last minute for work, and you had generously thrown them in with your laundry after he forgot them. One win for Ren tonight not having to sleep in jeans!
You thought it might be the only win, given the absolutely devastated look he had on his face staring down at your narrow bed.
He was not small, despite the closed off way he carried himself. His shoulders were relatively broad and his legs were long. You imagined that alone heâd feel squished in your bed. With you as well? He would be channeling the experience of a sardine. You considered again offering to sleep on your floor, but your sock-clad feet could feel the cold seeping in from the floorboards and you shuddered to think of sleeping down there.
âWall side or door side?â You offered, trying to lighten the mood.
He frowned, âWall side, so you donât push me off onto the floor.â He climbed in, pulling the covers over him and keeping his face pointed at the wall. He fit exactly, with no room at the top or bottom to stretch out any further.Â
You climbed in after him, plugging in your phone and blowing out the last candle on your nightstand before pulling the covers up. It felt strange. The weight of his body dipped your mattress in a way that you werenât used to. The normally cold chill of your room seemed lessened with his additional body heat under the covers. You imagined the sensation of an invisible barrier between you two, keeping you from settling fully on your bed. One of your shoulders was resting on air.
There was silence in your room, cut only by the constant of the rain outside, the wind making your old walls moan and crack, and the occasional distant boom of thunder. It went on so long, you werenât sure if he was already asleep or just determined to pretend to be. You were about to accept the crick youâd have in your neck when he spoke up.
âI canât move over anymore than I already am,â he sounded annoyed, but the kind of annoyed he was when you brought him lunch and he was upset about you bringing a rice bowl instead of noodles. The kind of annoyed where he would have said thank you and been grateful, if only he werenât cursed to be so terribly bratty.
âItâs fine! I can scoot over more,â you assured, sliding over a few more inches until you had to flex your arm to keep it from falling limp over the side of the bed.
Ren raised up on his elbow to inspect you and scowled, âYouâre gonna fall off, so just-â he reached across you and grabbed your arm to pull you back up on the bed and froze.
His face turned red and you assumed yours matched from the scorching heat you felt in your cheeks. Ren was leaning over you, holding your arm, in the process of pulling you closer to him, and his face was closer to you than it ever had been. He could have lowered a few more inches and kissed you- If, big on the if, this situation were romantic and not potentially traumatizing for him. You hoped if he ever got this close to you it would be without an expression of such embarrassment and terror.
He dropped you and flipped over immediately, pulling the covers up to his ears and facing the wall, âWhatever, you can fall off if you're so determined to. I can't stop you.âÂ
You took a slow, careful breath to calm your racing heart. The feeling of his hand on your arm lingered until the draft stole it away. You scooted over just enough to fit on your own bed and responded, âIâll try not to.âÂ
A few beats passed and he did not try to talk to you.
âGoodnight, Ren,â you mumbled, turning away from him and closing your eyes.
â...nightâŠâ he mumbled right back.
Ah, what a pair.
~~~
You started shivering in the middle of the night. He flopped over onto his back and glared at you. How was he ever going to sleep when you were shaking like a Chihuahua mere inches away from him?
âCut it out,â he grumbled quietly.
You didn't respond and the pathetic shivers didn't cease.Â
He pushed himself up and squinted at you in the darkness. The curtains were too translucent to keep out much moonlight, and he could see that your eyes were shut tight and you took slow, even breaths in your sleep. Ren frowned. It was cold here, it was no wonder that you were shivering so much.
He laid back down and stared at your ceiling. Did you spend every night like this? Whenever he left you to go home to Jabberwock, did you climb up into your rickety bed and freeze yourself to sleep? What a martyr. You should have demanded to live anywhere but a dusty, moth eaten cathedral.
He turned to look at you again.
But if you lived anywhere else, would he ever have been able to be here with you? If you lived with those nepotism babies in Frostheim, for example, he'd probably have to deal with Kaito and Luka hanging around all the time. Or worse, Jin demanding your presence at all hours of the night. He couldn't stand watching you disappear into that rich bastardâs room.
If you lived in Vagastrom, you'd what? Live in the trunk of some car and he'd have to hope no one tried to use that car in a monster truck rally before you got out of it? Sinostra, if you didn't get eaten by Taiga, who knows where Romeo would keep you? And those ghouls in Mortkranken, who's to say they wouldn't do some freaky experiments on you?
Of course, this was not to even consider if you lived in Jabberwock. Even with you so close by, he'd never have a chance to actually be alone with you. Haru and Towa would take up all your time and you'd help out so much you'd been too tired to hang out with him. NotâŠnot that he needed to be alone with you or anything.Â
God. He sounded like such a creep even thinking that. If thought crimes were a thing, he'd be in prison.Â
You continued pitifully shivering next to him, your hands curled up into fists you held close to your chest.
He pulled the sheets up to cover your hands, his fingers brushing against yours as he did so. You felt like ice, so much that he risked carefully touching you again to confirm. Yep. Prison. But also, were you going to die of frostbite in bed next to him? He could just groan to imagine that dweeb Ritsu finding a way to implicate him in your death. Or worse, charging a ridiculous fee to defend him in court.Â
There was no way around it then. He scooted closer. He was only doing this to avoid the court fees. He tugged his pillow closer to yours. And it's not like you hadn't touched before. He laid down, slowly, until his chest was against your back. You'd hugged him once- well, you hugged his arm. Because you fell and grabbed onto him for balance. But it counted. Whatever.
Renâs heart raced as he slowly wrapped an arm around you and placed a hand over your curled fists. It didn't mean anything. There wasnât anything significant in the way your hands felt in his or how you somehow smelled like the most comforting thing he could imagine. He rested his head on his pillow and felt you slowly relax, your shivering dissipating as he warmed you up. It was like you were melting, your curled up form unwinding delicately until you fit against him like you belonged there.
He shut his eyes tightly and tried to keep from breathing too heavily and waking you up. Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale- without meaning to, he started matching your rhythm. However awake and grumpy he felt moments before, now he felt like he could pass out and never wake up again. Just as long as you stayed there in bed with himâŠ
No, there was no way. He'd just have to wake up before you did and never let you know he did this and then it would be like nothing ever happened. It didn't matter how good it felt or how there was a little sliver of his heart that ached to do this every night. He bit back a groan of annoyance.Â
This was obviously your fault.
~~~
Sunlight filtered through your curtains, illuminating your room in a soft but insistently bright glow. Your phone alarm went off a few seconds later and you reached up to turn it off.
After the rough and cold start to the night, you felt certain you'd sleep horribly, but as you rubbed your eyes and stretched your legs, you thought you got the best night of sleep you'd had in a long time. You sat up in bed, pleasantly cozy and unable to keep a small smile off of your lips.
Ren was already up, shoving his night clothes into his bag.
âGood morning,â you managed mid yawn.
He made a noise at you.
âSleep okay?â You asked, âSorry if you were uncomfortable.â He seemed⊠off and you felt guilty that he had such a bad night when you felt so invigorated.
âIt was fineâŠâ he responded noncommittally before straightening up and throwing his backpack over his shoulder.Â
You nodded, your good mood hanging by a thread.Â
He gave you a look you didn't see as you rubbed the sleep out of your eyes and pawed for your phone to check your texts. He wanted to tell you a number of things he couldn't even let himself think. So he just grabbed his things and made his way to the door as he checked his own phone. âI have a bunch of raids tonight back to back.â He announced.
âHmm, okay,â You acknowledged.
He frowned. Invite him back.
You were too tired to get it.
âUgh, I'll be back tonight. You're not busy, right?â
You shook your head.
He frowned again, opened the door, and stood in the doorway. There were so many ways to end this better. He turned to look at you, your covers puddled in your lap, your cheek baring the red crease mark of your pillow, your eyes still foggy with sleep. He could say anything, do anything better than just saying âbyeâ and closing the door behind him.
You smiled softly at him, âI'll see you tonight,â
His cheeks felt hot, âYeah. Bye.â He stepped out and shut the door behind him, that picture of you sitting in bed and smiling at him burned in his brain. He'd be able to think of nothing else all day. Ren checked his weather app. More rain tonight.
He started off back towards Jabberwock. It would be too much of a hassle to grab an umbrella and you would freeze without him⊠he scowled at his own thoughts as he trudged home. This was really all your fault.
Hello!!
I really enjoy and look forward to your works!! I'm always excited when i get a notification of yours jaja.
My friend and I are planning on beginning a fanfiction of our own. I was wondering if you could give any tips on the writing process or maybe things you wish someone had told you when you had started.
I hope you're having a lovely day!!!!
Hello @frizzothehobbit thank you so, so much for the wonderful ask! I've been thinking about this, and I wanted to consider it properly before I answered, because there's so much to talk about regarding this subject. But I can't be thinking about this for all eternity, so here it is, my answer!
First off, I feel like a dinosaur because I started writing fanfiction more than 20 years ago... dear lord, I'm ancient! And if everything feels daunting when starting out, it's because it is! But it doesn't really have to be. Why, you ask? Because if you've decided to write fanfiction, there's already passion behind your intentions, and that is SO important! So, first off, and everybody's favourite:
WRITE WHAT YOU WANT!
Which is basically the same as saying: write for yourself. And as overused as this expression is, it's still true. Obviously we, authors, thrive on comments and feedback: it makes us grow! - And when I say this I'm not just talking about positive feedback, but constructive feedback! - But if you write what you want and love it, you're already halfway to writing a good story. Next:
INVEST SOME TIME IN YOUR STORY!
We, as authors, all wrote (and will write) drabbles at one time or another. Or mindless one-shots that we just needed to get out of our heads and onto the page. It's sooo valid. But my advice if you want to write a longer story: plan it! It helps avoid the 'oh-so-dreaded' plot holes (and this is actual advice I would have loved when I started... it would have saved me a lot of unfinished fics!) And of course, no two people plan the story the same way. I, for one, just think it through in my head (mostly in the shower, before falling asleep or doing mindless tasks such as cleaning), but I know other authors who plan every chapter and every step of the way so, here's another one:
FIND WHAT WORKS FOR YOU!
Be it in storytelling (first person, past tense, present tense, different POVs...), in planning (plan every single detail, just plan the direction of the story or don't plan at all...) or in deciding how much of a canon character are you willing to change. And this brings me to another point:
DON'T BE SCARED TO WRITE OUT OF CHARACTER!
Nobody is going to crucify you for that! It's fanfiction, people, it's not a history paper or a thesis. If you find yourself constantly thinking about this, you'll always doubt your work, so try to avoid dwelling on it, if possible.
CHECK FOR TYPOS
Mistakes are going to happen. You just can't avoid them. Unless you find yourself a Beta (and even then, it happens!). Typos, grammar and spelling mistakes fly by us authors when we're excited about our storytelling, so re-read what you wrote as many times as you want/need! I know I must have my fair share of mistakes (alas, I apologise for English not being my native language in every fiction I write), but I re-read my chapters a lot of times (I'm not even going to say how many - it's unhealthy!) and trust me, it shows if you don't give your story at least a good thorough read! Speaking of reading...
READ! READ! READ! READ A LOT!
Devour books, fanfiction, papers... whatever you can get your hands on. It's another cliché when it comes to writing tips, but it's overused for a reason. Reading a lot helps build a great vocabulary! And it helps you avoid annoying repetitions... Which brings me to another awesome tip:
USE A THESAURUS!
Suuuuuuuch a big help! Especialy when you're not a native speaker! Sometimes I find myself so stuck on a word that a thesaurus truly saves my life! Also:
DON'T BE AFRAID TO EDIT!
The scene isn't turning out the way you wanted it? CUT IT! It doesn't move the story forward? CUT IT! It doesn't fit the character? CUT IT! I've cut entire 1k+ scenes from some of my fanfictions because they made the story take a turn that I didn't like! Which brings me to another important tip:
LET THE CHARACTERS DO THEIR THING!
Sometimes your character just runs away from you and starts doing stupid shit. It's a known fact amongst all authors. Just let them be. Run with it. If the scene doesn't suit the story (say it with me...) CUT IT! But I've found so many times that the best plots in my stories come from characters who just decided they didn't give a flying f**k about me and went rogue! Last but not least (and because this is becoming a thesis in itself):
DON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!
Not all fics get comments. Not all fics get a lot of views. Not everyone who reads and likes, will comment. It's alright. We authors are used to it. And although it's a known fact that many authors have praise kinks (me included), and love to know people read and like their stories, don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed.
I really didn't want to end on that sad note, and maybe some people will disagree with me, but it's astounding how big the difference is between views and likes (or kudos on AO3) and comments. #CommentsMatter!
Also, and here's an extra:
DON'T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS!
We all have favourite authors, and we all wish we could write like someone we idealize (Oh, Edgar Allan Poe, how I adore thee!), but it's not fair to compare yourself to another author. You're not more or less than another writer! YOU'RE YOU! And that's already awesome!
Oof... maybe I could have gone on longer than this... maybe I could've added more tips. But this is what I thought of, and I do hope you, and other people, find them somewhat helpful! Thank you again for the wonderful ask!
Love you! â€ïž
PS: Engage with the community! Not only is it heartwarming, comforting, and rewarding, but as a commenter myself, I love having little debates with authors about why they wrote a scene in a specific way, or what they have in mind for what's coming next! Whatever it is, I guarantee you'll have a good time!
What do you think the difference is between buddie shippers who enjoyed tommy's part in the bi!buck reveal but are still rooting for buddie and are maybe even annoyed by buck/tommy now and buddie shippers who took to buck/tommy so much that they basically stopped rooting for buddie endgame? Cause I'm in the first group and genuinely don't understand how you'd end up in the second. Did they only like buddie cause it was THE fanon ship? Did they only like it cause it would be a ~hot mlm ship~ but now there is a better one? Were they just never as invested?
Look honey, I went back and forth if I wanted to answer this or not. I have no problem with people who ship both. I don't think it is some sin or crazy character flaw or whatever, enjoy whatever the fuck, yk? My thing is and always will be the insistence in pretending Tommy is more than he is that some people refuse to let go. Is the fact that I'm getting called homophobic for not liking Tommy, a fictional character with a history of bigotry, while someone had the nerve to bring the aids crisis to the middle of a discussion of who should get to kiss a stupid fictional guy. Tommy is a device to Buck's bisexuality, the show never tried to make him as more, Oliver was talking about their breakup in the post 704 interviews, Tim called it a fling, an entry level relationship, and I think enjoying the ship for what it is is fine. The problem is that there was a month between 704 and 706 where people, aided by Lou and the cameos, created a Tommy who's not the Tommy we are seeing, and they assigned an importance to that man that's just not what the show wants to do with him. My problem is the people calling 802 boring because they deluded themselves into believing the show was hiding Lou because he was filming with Angela and are pissed that Tommy didn't land the plane. My problem is the fact that I am being called names since fucking march over a guy, a relationship with 24 minutes of screentime where not even half of those are actually framed as being about the relationship. There's nothing beyond the fact that they are a queer relationship to be invested in. And I don't like hearing that I need to shut up about buddie and respect Buck's choices because he's in a relationship now and suddenly have to respect canon and that it's disgusting for me to see Tommy as a plot device who served his purpose already, when no one had that energy with Buck's previous relationships. I don't like the hysteria people dropped themselves into at the sight of Oliver Stark kissing a man and refuse to let go now because they're in too deep and burned too many bridges just to be stuck with no development, no scenes, a real possibility for a break up about Tommy's past racism, and having to pretend "your dad is alive" is healthy communication and "you're a vision in a cone" is the apex of romance. I don't think people need to justify why they like something over something else. But people need to be fucking for real and stop acting as if he's more than he is because I don't need to agree with headcanons someone paid 200 dollars for an actor to confirm.
Butterfly Reign chapter 40 đ§
Hi!
First of all, I just wanted to say how much I love Butterfly Reignâyour writing is incredible, and Iâve been absolutely hooked from the start. I think I started reading when there were only about 10 chapters out, which feels like a lifetime ago!
I just finished chapter 40, and Iâve been thinking a lot about the direction the story took, particularly regarding Theseus and Wilbur. Their relationship has been such a complex and emotional journey, and Iâve really enjoyed seeing them work through their issues. Honestly, itâs crazy to think back to when I first started reading, and how I wouldâve been rooting for Theseus to get his revenge, but now, with everything thatâs happened, I didnât expect the story to take such a tragic turn.
While Iâm still deeply invested in the story, Iâm curious about a few thingsâparticularly the choice to have Wilbur die. Iâve been wondering, how long have you had this planned? I noticed the MCD tag from the beginning, so Iâm wondering if this was always the direction you intended to take their characters or if it evolved as the story developed?
Iâd also love to know your thoughts on Theseusâs actions here (without giving away any spoilers ofc). In the context of the story (obviously not condoning murder in real life đ), do you think Theseus did what he had to do? Do you see him as someone who is still redeemable, or do you think that this was a mistake in his journey? I ask because, even though Iâve been the number one Theseus defender (his rights and wrongs) throughout the story, I found myself struggling with this moment. Itâs the first time Iâve felt so conflicted about his character. Iâm really curious about your perspective as the author, especially when it comes to the moral complexities in his decision.
Thank you so much for sharing this storyâ and I canât wait to see what comes next! (even though i'm not yet willing to except that it shall continue BR!crimboys-less) at least give me hope for Br!discduo if nothing else
Hi, thank you for the ask, it made my morning!
To answer your questions, it's a little complex when exactly the decision came about. In my original outline back in 2022, this whole scene did not actually involve any fire. Instead, it was Theseus and Fundy stranded on the lake as ice begins to crack. Wilbur gets Fundy to safety first, and then when he comes back for Theseus, they fall through. From there on, there were two versions of this scene that I fluctuated between: one, Wilbur cuts the rope connecting them and lets himself drown, and two, the same happens but both of them get saved by a third outside force. This is followed up by Wilbur falling into a coma and being absent for the rest of the fic, sans the epilogue where we see him awake. Simply put, it was never my plan for Wilbur to be present in the final arc; he simply has no place there. His story was always meant to end in this chapter.
However, as time went on, I realized that using a coma is a very cheap (for the lack of a better word) way to write off a character, and his death by sacrifice did not feel right. As I mentioned in another post, br!Wilbur was, off and on, for nearly a decade, br!Tommy's abuser. To have someone who caused so much pain for him die saving him didn't sit right with me. Tommy was working for so long on accepting his past and unlearning the behaviors Wilbur brought up in him that it felt like an injustice and a poor message besides to basically say 'oh well he loved you at the end of the day'. And exploring his death from the point of view Tommy being relieved by it and feeling guilty at the same time is too repetetive of the story itself from when Wilbur ran away the first time. That's when the decision for Tommy to kill Wilbur was born.
So short answer: Wilbur's story was always meant to end at this moment. The idea for murder hatched during the travel arc.
I could not tell you exactly when did I realize that the plot was heading towards Tommy killing Wilbur, but I very firmly stand by the point that it's something that has been brewing up in the background unbeknownst even to me. The thing, Tommy has always been a killer. You have always known him as one (Clara was killed by him 3 years into the past), even though you didn't know his full backstory. An important part of this arc in its entirety is that it's Tommy unpacking and healing from the trauma he experienced 6 to 3 years ago. When Tommy gets sick and Wilbur takes care of him â that's 11 year old Tommy getting closure from Wilbur leaving him behind, and trading their family for the life of a commoner and a family of his own. It's not about them learning to be different in the future; it's about them mending the past. At no point at all this was meant to be about redeeming Wilbur.
Off to the next question: was this necessary? Did Tommy do what he had to?
Not at all. I address that in the chapter itself. I believe it's three different times that an image of Clara tells that Tommy must do it, meaning kill Wilbur, but the only time Tommy voices that thought himself (after the dialogue with Warden), the must changes to can. It's him taking agency over his own choices and acknowledging that he has this option and it's his decision to proceed with it. He tells Wilbur not to make excuses for him for Clara's death, knowing he's about to commit the same crime again.
As to how to feel about his actions â that's entirely up to you. You're not meant to feel a certain way about any of the characters, and especially not Tommy, but I am curious to hear your guys' thoughts and analysis. What do you think?
Can you tell me your thoughts on Sky? (Perilâs brother)
Iâm probably the wrong person to answer that question. Not that I dislike Sky or anything, I just donât know a lot about him since I havenât read Dragonslayer.
Completely unrelated tangent ahead, move forward to last paragraph to skip
See, I donât want to be outright dismissive, Iâm sure there are a lot of fans who like it, and that is valid. I just havenât been able to muster up any interest in getting that book, then sitting down and reading it myself. From what I know about my own tastes and preferences, I am reasonably sure I wouldnât enjoy the experience.
I am, as people might have surmised already, a rather big admirer of dragons; I think they are majestic, intriguing, fascinating, and beautiful creatures. The reason why I originally fell in love with this series in particular is because it lets dragons be the main characters of their own stories. There is so much dragon-centric media out there where the dragons have to play second fiddle to human charactersâas if dragons are somehow incapable of holding the same emotional depthâand it bores me every time I see it.
That is not to say that I require a dragon lead to enjoy something. Besides this I am also a big fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Hunter x Hunter, Stardew Valley, and Psychonauts, for example. But it is so comparatively rare to have a series dedicated to Dragons and their stories specificallyâ especially in roles where they arenât just mindless evil beasts to be slaughteredâthat letting them have the spotlight for those specific cases is important to me.
So when a series like Wings of Fire looks at me, smiles, and says: âNow letâs explore the human perspective in all of this,â it makes my eyes glaze over. I just canât really get myself invested in this ongoing subplot about dragons gradually discovering and entering the mysterious world of humans, because Iâm worried they are going to take over the plot and push the dragon characters into the background yet again. Let's keep calling them Scavengers and proceed to not understand a single thing about them.
The thing is, even though I just said all of that, I actually like Flower. I think her dynamic with Smolder is adorable. If Sutherland wanted to write a winglet about Smolder and Vermilion discovering more about Scavenger stuff through Flower, Iâd probably be receptive to that, since I already know Smolder and that could be cute. I also think that it is very possible I might be able to enjoy Wren and Sky. I just don't really have the energy to read a book where I'm only interested in 1/3 of the content.
Tangent over
Sorry, this is turning into a very poor reply to your actual question. I wish I could say more about Sky, other than âWell, I donât know him, but I imagine he is probably cold-blooded and I hope Wren owns the Pyrrhian equivalent of a heat lamp so he doesnât freeze. They should do a chapter where Wren wants to do stuff but Sky is like âNooo, I have to lie on this warm rock for another three hours.â I think that would be the peak of storytelling.â
I've been in the dkbk fandom for 3 years and my husband is an anime only. We just watched the new episode and he was disappointed. He predicted that Star will die and the plot won't really move forward. He's a sci-fi fan and he's seen many a series fall apart after more characters, complexity, and a war are introduced. I've been avoiding spoling the manga for him but since he's lost interest, I spoiled him and confirmed that the manga has been in a holding pattern for 2-3 years with this final arc. I told him what you said about Bk's death and Deku losing his arms as being symbolic but he said those actions being reversed lowers the stakes and it's hard to maintain emotional investment if you know that major plot points will just get reversed. I wanna believe in Hori but I'm waiting for payoff instead of enjoying the story. Is what's happening really good storytelling if this final battle has been dragging on so long and Deku's characterization has come to a halt?
Iâm hesitant to answer this. I said I wouldn't answer any asks that were looking to me for reasons to keep liking MHA, and I really don't want to encourage more asks like this--and yes OP, I don't know if you realize it but that's basically what you're asking. You've framed this question around your husband's opinions, but you're couching your own thoughts inside.
If your issue is that you and your husband like different media, then that's a marital issue to resolve; accept that you shouldn't always watch all media together, particularly if doing so isn't fun for both of you. But your husband doesn't like what's going on in MHA, and this is enough to make you doubt whether or not MHA is written well? Despite the fact that many, many people like MHA in its current form? That sounds more to me like you agree with your husband. It certainly doesn't sound like you tried to sell this story arc to him.
I decided I'll answer a question like this this one time because it'll help me summarize my feelings on these topics, though I'm sorry to say the topics I address may not be what you expect.
"We just watched the new episode and he was disappointed. He predicted that Star will die and the plot won't really move forward."
Is this really a surprise? I don't remember anyone being all that into this arc when it first came out. Everyone was saying Star would die, and yet most people did not correctly predict the actual outcome of this fight--that Star's quirk would be eliminated and Tomura would be weakened. Most guessed Tomura would steal Star's quirk and become overpowered.
"He's a sci-fi fan and he's seen many a series fall apart after more characters, complexity, and a war are introduced."
You mention sci-fi but uh, has your husband watched like...any other anime? Ever? At all? MHA is far from the first shounen anime to do this. You can't really make your husband like MHA if his problem is that he came to an anime restaurant and got upset when there was nothing but anime on the menu.
Seriously, MHA is not doing all that much different with its ending than what Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood did, and that's one of the most critically acclaimed shounen anime of all time. If he's predisposed to dislike the stuff anime does, that's not a writing problem. That's a mismatch of anime with his tastes.
It strikes a nerve with me because I grew up loving anime and was bullied for it by people with opinions such as your husband's. Now, the mainstream-ification of anime has drawn those same sorts of people to anime for whatever reason, and all they seem to wanna do is complain about anime being anime. Take sci-fi for example: I typically hate outerspace-themed media and the concepts such media often explore, and you know what I do? Not watch it. I've decided such media is not for me. Honestly, the same is true for a lot of anime too. I am very picky about anime because there are some tropes or themes I'm just sick of.
"I've been avoiding spoling the manga for him but since he's lost interest, I spoiled him and confirmed that the manga has been in a holding pattern for 2-3 years with this final arc."
This is where it sounds like you primed him with your own feelings, because it certainly doesn't sound like you were selling him. I don't even know what this means. "A holding pattern"? Do you mean the arc has just been going on a long time (see: welcome to anime being anime)? Or do you mean not much has happened with Izuku? Because I am getting a bit of a sense that your issue is you're an Izuku fan and his growth has been slow because the arc has had to wrap up all the other characters' arcs first. Because a lot HAS been happening with all the other characters (and we recently got some Izuku progression too).
The only other thing I can think of is an opinion I've had for a long time. I think a lot of anime fans don't realize they're not actually manga people. You watch an anime you like a lot and you wanna get up to speed, so you go to the manga not understanding that the manga is different from the anime. The pacing is different, as is the presentation and focus on details. The manga presents one or two story points per chapter, whereas anime episodes are 2-3 chapters compressed into one sitting. The anime's major selling point is its fast pacing, but this is not a selling point of the manga--of ANY weekly manga. "2-3 years" means very little in the context of a 15-page-a-week-AT-BEST manga.
"I told him what you said about Bk's death and Deku losing his arms as being symbolic"
The symbolism angle is one thing. I've never really understood why people like any media without symbolism--that's what gives a story its flavor, isn't it? If we're talking about tropes and familiar story structures, the artist's approach to familiar items is precisely what makes it unique and interesting to me. I wouldn't become invested enough to care about Katsuki's death if all that mattered to me was the surface-level event.
But are you saying you spoiled the fact that Izuku lost his arms? That's...not that big of a plot point to spoil if you ask me. Certainly not one I'd bring up as one of the greatest hits of this arc. This is another detail that makes me feel like you're particularly focused on Izuku, which is not a bad thing nor is there anything wrong with that, but Izuku doesn't actually feature very much in this anime season all things considered. It's hard to sell anyone on what's currently happening with Izuku in the manga since we just got to his stuff and it's not complete.
Again, this was what happened with Fullmetal Alchemist. The last arc covered the events of one day that ended the final war. The main characters were only occasionally featured and didn't do all that much in the season until the very end, as one would expect. When it was coming out in manga form, the pacing was admittedly very weird because of this storytelling choice, albeit it felt a bit different from MHA since it was a monthly manga and covered more ground per chapter. But when the same arc was adapted to anime, the feeling and pacing were very different, and a lot of iffy elements improved on me as a result.
"he said those actions being reversed lowers the stakes and it's hard to maintain emotional investment if you know that major plot points will just get reversed."
Is your husband someone who watches things only once and then can't rewatch and enjoy them ever again? Does he only watch stories for plot twists and once he knows the twist he stops liking it?
I don't understand this general obsession with consequences and stakes a lot of people have. Sure, they are elements that can contribute to a mood or feeling in a story, but they're far from the make-or-break linchpins so many people make them out to be. The "reversals" are major plot points too. I find much more enjoyment in trying to follow why a writer would do such things and what they're trying to say than wondering how likely some character is to die or how many people will be brutalized.
I'm in the camp that believes spoilers should not make a difference in whether or not I find a series "good" or whether or not I can invest in it. I personally have played video games specifically BECAUSE they were spoiled for me and it sounded like I would like them, and having those major things spoiled for me did not detract from my enjoyment at all. I'm not saying everyone has to be like me, but I do certainly think a story's ability to persist as an impactful and memorable work has very little to do with its stakes and everything to do with how it handles its story and characters. Was Star Wars memorable and beloved because of how many people were at risk of dying in it? Was something taken away from the story when Luke got a robotic replacement for the hand he lost?
Goodness, didn't the MHA fandom predict for years that Dabi was Touya Todoroki? And wasn't everyone just waiting for the reveal to fucking happen already so we could get it over with? And wasn't the entire fandom surprised and enthralled when the Touya reveal did happen precisely because it was handled in such a unique and cool way with Horikoshi's flair? Did predicting that twist really ruin anything for the story?
A good story is a good story.
"I'm waiting for payoff instead of enjoying the story."
I can't know what payoff you're waiting for. I've enjoyed all the events and details along the way, even if there were some expected dips here and there. When I went back and reread the entire arc in one go, the pacing really hit me differently and I got a lot out of it. If you're not enjoying the story, that's not about whether or not the story is employing "good storytelling." I've enjoyed plenty of stories that were told poorly and sloppily because there were other redeeming features that appealed to me. This is about preference. You and your husband have your own personal preferences, and that's okay! But you both have to manage your preferences with respect to each other and to yourselves.
"Is what's happening really good storytelling if this final battle has been dragging on so long and Deku's characterization has come to a halt?"
If you're actually interested in whether or not MHA has "good storytelling," I'd suggest you take a creative writing class or otherwise learn about the way stories are told in different media i.e. novels vs comics vs TV shows vs movies vs video games. But I honestly don't think that's what you mean. I think you're looking for permission to keep liking MHA even if you personally don't like its storytelling or how Izuku's character is currently being handled. I can tell you from experience that yeah, you can. Plenty of people do it all the time. Some people get so frustrated with the stories they like they write fix-it fanfiction. Some people appreciate the way a story is so perfectly written that they cannot build a fandom around it because they can't come up with anything to add. It's going to depend on you and how you want to approach the situation, and while I'm happy to talk about what I like about MHA and which writing choices I think are well made, that's not going to get us very far if you don't like the same things.
I do often find media that I personally think is not written that well, and like I said, sometimes I like it and sometimes I hate it, but if it's a piece of media with a large fanbase like MHA, I have a hard time calling its writing universally "bad." If it speaks to that many people in some way, clearly there's something about it that reaches people effectively, and who am I to judge? I'm certainly no expert in quality of writing. All I have are what I've taken away from my education in literature/writing, my years of experience with many anime that came before MHA, and my thoughts on all the other media I've enjoyed. My experiences will lead to different conclusions than others'. I know I don't like a lot of what's popular with most people, so I certainly can't hold myself out as some paragon of good taste.
It's okay to like or dislike whatever for whatever reason. I don't always stay with the same fandom. I move around when I find new and good things. I sometimes come back to old things I loved and like it anew or find it underwhelming as I currently am. As of right now, I'm actually willing to say something I never was before, which is that MHA might be one of the best-written manga if not the best manga I've ever read. While FMA is top-tier, its themes are a lot safer than MHA's ambitious goals. MHA was always going to be controversial in some ways just because of what it attempts to do, such as telling its story through comic book-themed superheroes. It also says a lot of political things that risk alienating readers. The levels of risk MHA takes are part of what makes it amazing to me and what makes it a worthwhile piece of art to enjoy. I'm so happy it exists, flaws and all. No story will be universally loved, and that's something I accepted a long time ago when I decided I wouldn't let the bullying stop me from liking anime. All I can hope to do is have the courage to love the things I love and the grace to leave alone the things I dislike for others to enjoy.
Birth by Sleep was the point the KH series began going downhill. It was hyped up as a prequel that would answer a lot of questions, which it did...but it also had somehow mutated in development into something that went beyond that into recontextualizing the entire series rather than helping to logically progress it, which included heaps of blatant retcons that contradicted the previous games. All the new Keyblade lore in this game never went away and gradually consumed the series, as did its main villain for a long period of time. The anticipated fall-out of "save Terra, Aqua and Ven from their tragic fates" transformed into "save everyone from their tragic fates", undermining any dramatic weight the series had.
Yet despite that, it was on the whole executed quite well. I love the graphics, the music, the gameplay, the Disney worlds, the overall atmosphere, the new characters and their superb designs, the mini-games including the Command Board, and even the story on its most basic level plus clever writing/pacing by Daisuke Watanabe that shines through even Nomura and Oka's clunker of a script. It may not have lived up to expectations and was when the series jumped the shark, but there is so much good in it that keeps me coming back all the same.
I cannot stand Xehanort the Keyblade wielder as a character, for a multitude of reasons I don't want to relitigate here (I feel everyone ought to know them by now anyway). But despite that, there are three places where I actually enjoy him a lot - in Birth by Sleep where he's written as just the delicious wicked, unsympathetic villain of that story and origin behind Terra-Xehanort plus is voiced wonderfully by Leonard Nimoy; in Kingdom Hearts III's Re:Mind DLC where he's just treated as an enemy you can enjoy hating and beating up without thinking about him all that much plus is voiced wonderfully by Christopher Lloyd, and in the KH3 manga adaptation where most of the problems he suffered from in the game have been excised, from having his plan depicted as a new comeback rather than "the pre-destined master plan all along" to having the unearned pathos and dignity in his send-off removed.
358/2 Days is a mess, but it's.....how do I put it....a sincere mess. It's got the same dumb shonen anime vibe as KH2 did, but dumb shonen anime that are genuine and comfortable in being dumb shonen anime are charming to me, moreso that dumb shonen anime that overreach and try to pretend they're some avant-garde work in the way the KH series grew into from Dream Drop Distance and onward. I consider Kingdom Hearts, Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II, the special editions of all three, the original Coded (the mobile game that doesn't exist anymore), 358/2 Days and Birth by Sleep to be the Golden Age of the franchise.
Xion kicked off many unfortunate trends that would contribute to the degradation of the KH series and as a character she's very shallow in how plot is put ahead of any form of distinct personality, but that plot wasn't half-bad all things considered (it should have been a disaster, yet it shockingly wasn't), and while her personality may be tepid her personal struggle is effectively portrayed and I can't blame people for getting invested and choked up over it.
Of course, I straight-up love the manga version of Xion. She doesn't qualify for this meme.
Kingdom Hearts III is an abomination of a story, just one shade removed from its direct predecessor Dream Drop Distance. It officially killed any interest I have in the franchise going forward. But much like Birth by Sleep, it's a damn well-executed game! The gameplay, while shallow, is really fun, and by God the Disney worlds are superb - they may be the most filler they're ever been plot-wise, but they've also never been better designed, successfully combining the best of KH1 and KH2 style design in a way BBS and DDD failed at while also cleverly incorporating different genres of gameplay that match the world's aesthetics. The Gummi Ship is a similar "best of both worlds" situation, I adore minigames like the Bistro, Classic Kingdom, and the Flan Heartless, and all the stuff brought about in the Re:Mind DLC (except for fucking Yozora) is fantastic (Data Greeting, my beloved!) So while KH3 being my final big experience in the KH series could have been better, it could have been worse too.
Under better circumstances many characters from the X sub-series and overlapping Lost Masters Saga could have had potential, but the writing is so bad that I just end up turned off of the characters altogether. Except Strelitzia. Despite (or maybe even because) her having some of the worst treatments of a female character even by this series' standards (which is saying something), I can't help but appreciate her. While I hate the "Keyblade wielder in ancient times" angle for all of them, something about the dynamic between Strelitzia, Lauriam and Elrena is endearing and adds a lot to the bond between Marluxia and Larxene that beforehand was just a shallow one rooted in mutual power-hungry aspirations. So even if I disregard literally everything else involved, I'd still want to headcanon Strelitzia as existing.
In my spare time, when I'm not watching dramas I'm either reading books or watching people talking about books on YouTube. One tradition I've always really enjoyed is their "Mid-Year Freak Out" tag, especially because I like the idea of getting a chance to reflect on the year so far as well as look to the year ahead.
This year I thought I'd combine my two passions and use (and in some cases alter) the prompts for my own use, i.e. so that I can talk about dramas rather than books.
The only rule: answer the questions (and go wild I guess).
And we start the list with the biggest risk! No The Trainee is nowhere near finished and, no I have no idea how it's going to finish (it's GMMTV it could drop the ball through the floor and into the earth's core for all I know) but, if it manages to keep going the way it's going, I'm going to absolutely love it. I've mentioned before that The Trainee reminds me a lot of Misaeng, what I haven't said is that Misaeng is my (tied) favourite drama of all time and if The Trainee can get anywhere close to making me feel like I did the first time I watched Misaeng (which it is so far) then it's on to a winning formula.
So far it's got everything I look for in a drama: a solid cast with excellent chemistry, a plot that focuses on the little battles of everyday life, and an excellent mix of fast friendship and slow burn romance with plenty of character development along the way. It also doesn't hurt that it's got the balance between slapstick-funny and emotional tension pretty much bang on either.
I can't get this drama or it's characters out of my head and I am deeply, deeply, invested in where things are going next so, as a nod to the hold it has on me and my hope that I've found a new all-time fave, The Trainee is my favourite drama so far so GMMTV DO NOT LET ME DOWN.
Thai BL opening themes can be very hit or miss for me (I won't lie, I have skipped many an opening sequence because I can't stand the song) but Wandee Goodday's "Fan With Benefit" caught my ear the first time I heard it and refused to leave me alone after that. I think I listened to it on repeat for at least 2 weeks and then at least once a day after that.
It's fun, it's flirty, it's got a chorus I like to dance to and it has now found itself on my "Songs to Cook Dinner To" playlist (I don't know if that says more about the song or how I cook dinner).
Now if only the drama lived up to its theme song...
Last Twilight would have been on this list had I not dropped it in December and, as a result, rendered it ineligible for a 2024 drama. I'm still absolutely fuming about how badly it let its audience down and how terribly it handled an extremely nuisanced topic to the point its final messaging was almost harmful.
I'm not going to get into this in too much detail because my frustrations have been voiced much more eloquently by people @lurkingshan and @twig-tea. I will say, however, that I loved the first 6(?) episodes of Wandee Goodday and I'm really sad about how much I didn't enjoy the rest of the drama.
There were a lot of things to like (and a lot of potential) right from the start: two couples with great chemistry, an ace character with actual depth and dimension, really sweet relationships (both familial and friendships), and the foundations for some interesting explorations of various interpersonal dynamics. Unfortunately none of these things really got followed through on and instead Wandee decided to go dark (with topics like mental health, sexual assault, loss and grief, parental neglect and abandonment to name a few) and do it badly. I don't mind if a show wants to explore difficult topics, in fact I really appreciate it, but what I won't tolerate is a drama introducing those topics as central plot points and then skimming over them in the most superficial way possible.
If you can't be bothered to put in the effort to properly research/explore difficult topics, do not include them in your drama.
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS SHOW SINCE IT FIRST GOT ANNOUNCED. Which unfortunate because I was so excited for it I got stressed about it living up to my expectations (or not) and then couldn't watch it when it came out. It's annoying, it happens, I know how to fix it.
Anyway, I've given it some space, I've dealt with the other things that were making me stressed and I am now ready to devour it give it a go.
I have long been a fan of Ahn Pan Seok's works and I really appreciate his directorial style, the themes he chooses to tackle, and the way in which he explores his topics of choice. I will fully acknowledge his work is not for everyone; he favours slow (extremely slow) stories with characters and plots who are realistic to a frustrating (and sometimes infuriating) degree. You also need to have a pretty in depth understanding of Korean society and its problems, taboos and concerns to fully understand the underlying messages of his dramas and the structures/beliefs/views he's critiquing. That being said, for me that is the perfect recipe for a drama that's going to claw itself into my brain and stay there.
Secret Love Affair, One Spring Night, and Something in the Rain all had a lasting impact on me and, thanks to @lurkingshan's posts, I'm pretty sure Midnight Romance in Hagwon will join them.
It may come as a surprise after the last entry but I actually try quite hard to not get hyped about upcoming releases, mainly to avoid creating any expectations which can then be disappointed. I like to go in with as open a mind as possible.
As a result, there are a few upcoming releases I'm keeping an eye on but none I'd say I'm properly "anticipating" (ĂĄ la Midnight Romance in Hagwon). The closest I can get is Monster Next Door which I am genuinely excited for and which I plan to watch from day 1.
I'm not completely sure why I'm looking forward to it so much, I think it's because I do love a good opposites attract, foes-to-hoes dynamic and Monster Next Door seems like it's going to offer that to me in spades alongside a serving of comedy and a sprinkling of heat. Bring the introvert-extrovert pairing and let me watch them be stupidly whipped for each other, it's all I need for now.
youtube
Technically all of the dramas on my Want to Watch list because I want to clear it but I'm aware that that's a bit of a reach.... If anyone can spot any dramas on here that you think I should prioritize (or dramas you think I should scrap), recommendations would be appreciated.
I also want to watch more Japanese BLs. The few I've got through, I've enjoyed and, for a lot of them, I've already read and loved the source manga so I know I'll enjoy the plot. Unfortunately I really struggle with the short episodes (30 minutes is not long enough for me to get invested) and that I have to commit to binging them and can't watch them while they're airing, which is a whole other issue. I'm thinking of focussing on Japanese GL for now as a hook (I'm not enjoying the current Thai GL line up and I'm running out of Korean GL I can find online) so I guess the dramas I "need" to watch are She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat and Ayaka is in Love with Hiroko.
* Biggest surprise
* Newest favourite actor/director/writer/producer
* Most beautiful drama
* Newest fictional crush
* Newest favourite character
* A drama that made you cry
* A drama that made you happy
And there you have it! Lightly tagging @lurkingshan @twig-tea and @italianpersonwithashippersheart but no pressure! Anyone else who wants to do this, feel free! Just tag me so I can gather more recs to make my To Watch list even longer.
#mid year drama freak out#tag game#thai bl#kdrama#the trainee#Wandee Goodday#wandee goodday criticism#midnight romance in hagwon#monster next door#I really hope the pictures work#its been ages since Ive been able to put this much time into a post and I wanted to play around and have fun
counting down with you by tashie bhuiyan - this is a cute and straightforward ya romcom with complicated family dynamics. grade: B
a show for two by tashie bhuiyan - i have discovered i don't like type a characters and their arcs anymore but at least the family stuff was interesting. grade: C
full shift by jennifer dugan - i wanted more girl werewolves but ultimately found this unfulfilling. grade: B-
firekeeper's daughter by angeline boulley - this didn't quite live up to the hype but i really enjoyed the themes and the mystery. grade: B
witch hat atelier by kamone shirahama (vol 1-4) - a great manga for me to start with, familiar plot with lovely characters and a lovely art style. grade: B+
what happened at midnight by courtney milan - i loveeeee courtney milan but this novella was more forgettable although the themes of abuse were handled respectfully and terrifyingly well. grade: B
unlocked by courtney milan - not many can pull of childhood bully and victim romance but there was so much grovelling and actual repair done that i was fully impressed! grade: A-
a kiss for midwinter by courtney milan - sex ed IS sexy and i thought the set up for this novella was really interesting. grade: A-
the duchess war by courtney milan - my least favorite of the series but milan has never written a bad book in her life so it was still good. grade: B
the year i flew away by marie arnold - this was very intense and had a great message although the pacing was a little wonky. grade: B
talk sweetly to me by courtney milan - a lovely coda concluding the duchess war series
unveiled by courtney milan - like many romances, this moved way too fast for me but i did like it overall, especially the personal struggles. grade: B-
pegasus by robin mckinley - wow, i love re falling in love with a book i adored as a child. too bad i'll never get a sequel. grade: A+
cheer up: love and pom poms by crystal frasier - this read like a really good outline of a story but the scenes moved to fast to sit with the emotion. grade: C
the poet x by elizabeth acevedo - acevedo has a way with words that seems magical. and on theme with this month, loved the family shit, didn't care about the romance.
Wait wait wait, will there be like,, three separate endings for otoya, karasu and yukimiya(who reader ends up with at the end yk?) or just one ending?? I am SO invested in the roommate series it actually changed my view(especially Otoya's chap, very good very nice btw, made him feel more three dimensional than I ever viewed him) in them.
And it just pangs me if it ends with reader just choosing only one when all these feelings are being built up around their special moments..
Just asking & no pressure! Cuz idk if there's gonna be a solid romance at all đđ Maybe it's pretty obvious but just wanted to say ur writing is such a goodie type of goodie đ€đ€ Sorry for disturbing,, byebye!!
hi nonnie!! dont fret, im always happy answering any questions that u may have in mind! thank u for enjoying my writing and the most recent chapter! so happy to hear that im helping people acknowledge otoya more hehe
so what im planning is to have one canon ending and two alternate, non-canonical endings, with each character respectively. i dont think id be able to live with myself if i didnt give each of them a happy ending (and also so i avoid the mob and their pitchforks /lh) but there will only be just a singular canon ending with one of the boys that goes along with the plot
currently, it's still a pretty rough decision, which is why im asking people in the taglist form who they'd rather see so i can get a feel for who people would be happy with more in the canon ending
#i should say it's not completely indicative for sure who'll end up with reader#but more so i can get a feel of how much depth to put to the characters for build up#karasu and yukki were leading but now its nearly equal with how much otoyas popularity spiked after the latest chapter KDSFSK#â ; letters to wonderland#series ; apartment 345
TUA Rant #2: Pacing
Spoilers ahead:
I also want to talk about the pacing of the show: it was odd.
The first episode was already a bit odd for me: they took quite a long time to introduce the characters, but it didn't seem like enough. A bit contradictory, but still. 5 years passed snice the last season and some changes seemed pretty sudden. I want to know more about Diego and Lila's budding tension, Viktor being bad at dating, Klaus becoming a germaphobe (which lasted for, like, 2 episodes. I get that it's linked to his powers but it was still a bit disorientating), Luther becoming a stripper professional dancer. But with 6 episodes I think they did try to do the best they could, and I'm not going to give them any more shit about it, I do understand that it's hard.
There were scenes that didn't need to be there. The scene where they were puking in the van. It went on for a long time (in my mind it was, but it was probably a minute or two). And the Five and Lila scenes oh my god that plot point took up so much time and went absolutely nowhere except hinder the main plot. Like what was the point.
Klaus' (and Allison's) sideplot went absolutely nowhere. It was interesting to watch and I was invested, but it didn't help push the main plot like Klaus' sideplots usually do. It was just there.
Diego and Luther's sideplot did link back to the main plot, but only for a bit. At least their dynamic was fun to watch (Maybe I'll do a post for all the characters a bit later).
I was cool with the first four episodes. I was genuinely interested in a plot and there was a feeling of suspense, a mystery to be solved. I thought the plot points above would link back to the apocalypse somehow. But they mostly didn't, and that was a bit of a letdown. There were so many parts that were just irrelevant, and when you have limited runtime, that's not ideal.
And in turn I feel like a lot of plot points that needed to be expanded upon just WEREN'T. And a lot of it had so much potential and were genuinely interesting to me.
For Jennifer: why was she in a squid? Why did she have durango in her body instead of Marigold? What happened to her family? I want to know more about what the Cleanse actually is. Why does it appear the way it does? Why does it get bigger and bigger? Why did the reaction of two particles create a Lovecraftian horror-esque creature? Why is it named "The Cleanse"??
For Abigail and Reginald: what exactly happened when she synthesized the particles? Why did she synthesize the particles? i want to know more about her and Reginald. Is she an alien as well? Why can she change skins? And why is Reginald an alien? How did he manage to get a whole village under his control? What was his school for wayward boys? And why did that memory machine ever exist, what kind of technology is he cooking in his basement?
For the Umbrellas: Why did their powers return the way that they did? Some of them changed a bit, some of them didn't, some of them got extra powers. Was there any explanation for that? I feel like I have a lot of questions that weren't answered.
And the subway! The idea of it is so cool and it has so much potential. I wish it was explained more.
The ending was really hasty to me. The death scene was way too sudden. The Five deli scene was out of place (to me), though it was interesting to watch. It was like BOOM i guess we all have to die now. It didn't land well.
I do feel like the pacing would have been done better if there were 10 episodes. Some aspects of the show would have been made better. I also think some of the show's plot was sacrificed for comedic scenes. I always enjoy a fun scene but personally, I don't think that should have been the main point of the season. If they didn't have the time to really expand upon the new plot points to make a complete narrative they shouldn't have added so much in.
TIS I, RANDOM JEFF!! I HAVE RETURNED TO BESTOW RANDOM QUESTIONS UPON THEE!!!
this time iâm gonna do one question per fandom in your pinned post >:3
Whoâs your favorite villain? Would you want to encounter them randomly in an alleyway? (Bnha/Mha)
What blood demon art would you want to have? (Kny)
Whoâs your favorite member of the Forger family? (Spy x Family)
Whoâs your favorite character from Brooklyn Nine-Nine? (B99) [I havenât watched this so i canât give a better question srry đ]
Would you survive in the circus? Who would you get along with best? (Tadc)
Which animatronic do you find critically underrated by the fanbase? (Fnaf)
Who would win in a fight, Alastor or Stolas? Why? Also whoâs your favorite IMP member?
decided not to do all fandoms rn cause i want some for later.
ENJOY!!! IâLL BE BACK SOON!
WHY HELLO, RANDOM JEFF!!! :DD
1, Mr. Compress. And ima say I wouldn't want to come across him in an alleyway just because he's a villain who has killed many a time. That being said, he's probably one of the best lov members to find in an alleyway, cuz he likely wouldn't kill without reason, unlike someone like Dabi or Shiggy
2. I am sadly not well knowing of kny, so I don't know my answer to this one. Tis one of those fandoms where I really enjoy the characters and plot and things, but I haven't gotten around to actually watching it yet, sorry (I should probably just remove it from my fandom list lol)
3. Hmmmm tis a hard one... ima say Anya :3
4. Holt (Rest in piece, king đ)
5. I probably wouldn't survive tbh. I'd have a panic attack right out the gate and abstract. I'd say I'd probably get along best with Ragatha (Tho I'm not sure how much she'd like me lol)
6. Not terribly invested in this fandom, but I do like Bonnie. Not quite sure if he's underrated tho
7. Alastor. I say this cuz, although both have incredibly strong powers, Stolas doesn't often use his to fight, whereas Alastor practically made a living off of killing powerful overlords. As for my fav IMP member... hmmm tis another tough one. Maybe Moxxie?? Either one of the Ms
And thank you ever so much, Random Jeff!! I hope to continue these little interactions for as long as possible >:]
I might go and tweak my fandom list tho
I do have one question for the almighty Random Jeff: Are you currently following me?
Totally not trying to figure out who you are btw...
RFTS!AU AskBox #4
Me to @signed-sapphire for the legendary number of 50 Questions Galore they sent me:
Heads up though, you might notice thereâs certain questions skipped. Iâm either not able to answer some of the asks at all OR theyâre either some art requests that I havenât finished and will post in future posts. So I had to skip them for this post unfortunatelyâŠ. I apologise as such. đ
Anyways, letâs get speeding through them shall we?
1. How do you plan to show the songs?
It should be question 6 of this post here. :)
âŠâŠ
2. How many songs do you plan to have in RFTS?
4 or more. Depends on what I come up with.
âŠâŠ..
3. What âvibeâ would each song have?
Uhhhhhhh, idk tbh. Iâm really just going with the flow of what this story brings me. You canât wait to see what the RFTS!plot has in store? Yeah, me too.
âŠâŠ..
4. Whoâs voicing Valentino and the main cast?
For Valentino, Iâm not sure. Iâm debating whether it should be younger Bambi or Ronnoâs VA. But he basically has an actual kidâs voice this time rather than a deep-sounding one. (Because honestly, I found that a bit weird personally). For the the other characters, I donât really mind the voices they have canonically.
And I think Iâve mentioned this before, but even though Sueño canât speak, I could hear him singing this in this voice hypothetically.
âŠâŠâŠ..
5. Write or draw any cute interaction between Ashueño!
Mk :3
âŠâŠâŠ
6. I know Asha will have a different outfit by the end, but do you have different designs for anyone else?
Yeah, I do actually. Some characters have a different outfit to better reflect their current context. (Like how Sakina would have work clothes similar to Asha.) But I donât want to reveal most of them at the moment since I would like to keep them a secret for now.
âŠâŠ
7. Some Gabo doodles, if you donât mind. I rarely see the short king in any Wish Art.
Fiiiiine.
His design makes a lot more sense if you were me and you knew the context. Take this art with whatever theories you guys can throw at me đ
âŠâŠ. 10. What made Amaya fall in love with Magnifico? What changed?
Amaya had a family who greatly discouraged her interest in studying magic and potions since itâs against what their family has done for generations. Meanwhile, Magnifico who was adopted as Rosasâ prince, is expected to learn magic but COULDNâT because he struggles to do so since he hasnât moved on from his trauma.
When these guys were around 16-15 years old, they were mutual best friends. Mag offers Amaya to read from his magic books while he finds comfort in just having a genuine friend who doesnât remind or push expectations onto him that he hears everyday in the castle. Sheâs like an escape from the stresses he has in there.
In their future years, Amaya grew to fall in love with someone who promised her the world if she only asked for it. She finds bits of herself in Mag, as both were people with crushed dreams that deserve better. (In their POV anyway.)
Falling in love was not at all what she expected since she used to believe sympathy would only hold her back from exploring the limits of magic. But you know, Amayaâs as much as a tragic character as Magnifico is.
âŠâŠ.
11. Who fell first and who fell harder between those two?
Is it possible to say that RFTS!Magnifico is both?
âŠâŠ..
12. Any fun fact about the Royal Couple? (You can tell who Iâm most invested in. lol.)
The only reason Espino, the royal cat, is in the castle is because Amaya wanted him around. Otherwise, if it were up to Mag, that cat is out to the streets. Heâs not very fond of animals and he considers them as pests. Though, Espino gets small bonus points from Magnifico just because he keeps the castle clear from mice which he especially hates.
(Good to know youâre enjoying âGrand Despairâ while it lasts :)
âŠâŠ
13. This may be weird butâŠBody Swap! How would Hopes and Dreams react?
Asha would have zero idea how to get star magic under control. Meanwhile, Sueño finds an interesting realisation.
âŠâŠ..
14. Whatâs your favourite fanart piece of your AU?
I LOVE all of them so much!! Theyâre all made by very amazing artists!! Iâm so happy to see these silly characters Iâve made be brought to life in someone elseâs style. đđ
Mere words canât express this joy enough. I hope you all would love the final chapters once they do come out as much as you loved seeing content of them now. X3
âŠâŠ..
15. Are you telling your story via writing or art of word dump?
Iâm planning to share it in chapters like how Anny and everyone else has been doing. Plus some more sketches I would keep making of them obviously.
âŠâŠâŠ
17. Draw Ashueño dressed as another Disney couple!
Hehehehehe guess whooo~ đ
âŠâŠâŠ
19. Young!Sueño!
Which one? đ
Awww, good times back then when the little guy is still figuring out the forms he likesâŠ.
âŠâŠ 20. Young!Royal Couple!
Mini Magnifico would rather drown himself or drink snake venom than call Oliver his dad- âŠâŠâŠ
22. Give some more lore on Ashaâs father. Are you keeping him as close to the source material as possible? Will we see him in flashbacks or something?
Youâll definitely get to see TomĂĄs at certain points in the story. Either in the short prologue, mentions and flashbacks. Heâs generally a friendly guy but at the same time, is also assertive to defend what he thinks is wrong. But even though his life was cut short, TomĂĄs ended up inspiring more people than he thinks. Especially his old friend, Sabino, who hasnât given another wish or attended any more wish ceremonies after his death.
I donât think we really knew much about Ashaâs father at all in the canon movie, but Iâll pretty much be close to what is depicted there already with some more detail on how he made an influence in the lives of those he loves.
âŠâŠâŠ
23. Give Sueño a stuffed toy for him to cuddle with. He deserves it <3
He adores it so much đđ
âŠâŠâŠ.
24. More lore about the Astral Realm!
Not all Wishing Stars have the strong desire to venture down into the human realm someday and thatâs completely fine. They can still guide their wishmaker from above. But for those who do want to, they need to answer one important question first:
âWhy do you grant wishes?â
Since they would be going down to earth by themselves ALONE with none of their elders to guide them this time, their answer to this question serves as their anchor in case they get lost or distracted. Answers do vary and some may be the same among stars, but thatâs fine. As long as theyâre sincere with all their core on their answer. Some examples may be: âI like to see them reach their very best and reap their deserved rewards.â Or âI like watching them journey and discover themselves.â
âŠâŠâŠ.
25. SNEAK PEAKS!!
This scene is one of my dotpoints I came up with but Iâm not so sure anymore if that would still fit in and whether I should scrap it. Regardless, I thought this would be a nice little thing to show you all. Proof that Iâm indeed working on it đ
(Actually, this sounds so cute to draw. Feel welcome to try and do so if you want to, my fellow artists ^^)
âŠâŠ 26. How does Magnificoâs magic work?
I made a whole post on this :3
âŠâŠâŠ
27. Where did Amaya learn potions?
Sheâs self-taught mostly. But I also did mention that Mag generously lets her borrow what is meant to be his books of magic soooo, he played a role on that as well.
âŠâŠ
29. Whatâs Amayaâs opinion on the other Wish AU Mags?
Iâm not exactly sure how different her opinions would be on each of them since I think we all decided to have our fun with Magnifico just being a shameless show-off and fun evil villain. Iâll try though.
Amaya would think KOW!Mag reminds her a lot of her own husband, also short-tempered and a disgustingly sweet romantic at times. Sheâs kind of a play-hard-to-get girl though đ. One thing she does notice is that what WRTS!, Wish Granted! And KOW!Mag have in common is how loud they are with their ceremonies. Is that a universal Magnifico thing? Eh. There sure is a lot of interesting knowledge to learn from these universes. Hmmm.
TKoRaT!Maggy has that same pained look that falls on RFTS!Mag whenever heâs sulking by himself and needs time alone. Usually itâs because of his old village trauma. Itâs an intriguing but ever so familiar cycle she recognises well.
Meanwhile. TFS!Mag isâŠâŠdifferent, she would say. Not exactly good different. I kinda imagine her eyeing this guy like a cat. This Mag just gives off a very different vibe of non-ruthlessness(?) that sheâs not used to.
âŠâŠ..
30. Same for Mag, but vice versa.
RFTS!Mag gets very very very familiar vibes with KOW! And Wish Granted!Amaya. He finds it slightly amusing since it feels like his wife just became a part of some triplets. (He jokingly asked RFTS!Amaya if she had any sisters she never told him. The woman wasnât amused. She doesnât really like being reminded of her family.) Iâm sorry TKoRaT! And TFS!Amaya, but youâve made the decision to adopt Asha as your daughter and so he thinks lower of you now. AlthoughâŠthe TKoRaT!couple might just get to redeem themselves for that since they sound interesting enough. Theyâre going to have the ditch the girl though at some point.
WRTS!Amaya just feels off. He doesnât know what exactly though? Is he losing his mind or something? Ugh, I think he could use devouring another Wish Bubble just in caseâŠ
âŠâŠ..
31. You know what, for Asha and Sueño too!
Oh boy, here we go. đ
Asha will NOT be able to handle Wish Granted!Starâs energy. Itâs so different from the silent but still lively conversations she has with her Starboy. Star just canât bring himself to stop talking, can he? đ
Asha thinks WRTS!Aster and TKoRaT!Star are adorable. Cielo may be a bit much at times with his light teasing and flirting, but sheâs aware he means well.
I could see Ashaâs non-hesitant empathy, patience and genuine concern to Haedus would be a huge comfort for the poor guy. (Trust me, sheâs done this plenty before.) Sheâs a bit surprised to see Naos and Nembus but I think theyâd get along just fine. Sheâs pretty good with playing with kids from her experience with a mischievous Valentino. And lastly, KOW!Aster is a total sweetheart that she jokingly comments could rival Sueñoâs. (That comment caught Sueñoâs attention quickly lmao.)
MEANWHILE:
Sueño is more hesitant and unwilling at first to approach humans by his own accord. Heâll still keep a short distance buuuut⊠if theyâre just another version of Asha, it canât be that horrible, right?
KOW!Ashaâs drawings are a familiar sight for him and heâs impressed that she could bring her own drawings to life. Same goes for WRTS!Asha with her magic wand. Maybe theyâre friendly⊠Maybe they could both do that together :D Heâs neutral with Wish Granted! And Aledâs Asha for now until he gets to know them better.
Sueño recognises that same shyness and timid nature in TKoRaT!Asha. (Itâs weird how she does the same thing RFTS!Asha does of turning their head away and hiding behind their hair when he innocently just looks her way.)
And then thereâsâŠâŠ.HER. TFS!Asha. Cielo talks about her a lotâŠ.đŹ. But you know, that girl scares him.
Unfortunately, Sueño is staying a relatively farther distance away from the last two Ashas I mentioned. Why? Idk, probably the fact that theyâre the daughter of Mag and Amaya-
âŠâŠâŠ.
32. *Gives Sueño an iPad with Duolingo on it* Here my child. Learn Spanish.
I have a feeling you did this so he could finally find out what his name, âSueñoâ translates into. Lol, nope. Not yet heâs not.
He still appreciates the gesture though, but the guy got distracted by the other cool features and apps this weird magical mirror-tablet thing(?) had and completely forgot all about the Owl app.
âŠâŠ
33. Will Asha ever attempt to learn Celestial? Maybe with a candle? Like Morse Code? Idk.
Idk. Speaking Celestial is really just stars exchanging screechy sound waves to each other telepathically like words, while their glowing sequences indicates the mood and tone of what theyâre saying. Maybe if Asha comes to learn how to harness light magic on her own, sheâll be able to at least convey emotions such as happiness in it by controlling the brightness and duration of each flash.
âŠâŠ.
35. How are you planning out your story?
I usually think of what main message Iâm trying to get across first and build the story around it. After some character and world-building stuff (that I keep adding to because procrastination), I put the key scenes I could think of in bullet-point format and then just think up some in-between scenes that could occur between those points.
Usually though, the most usual process is that a random concept/idea pops into my head and then I immediately type it down so I wonât forget it. Itâs basically my thing now to organise the giant mess of reminders into comprehensive plot lines.
Iâm not writing the story at this point. The story is choosing to expose itself to me XD
Another main thing I do is listen to my Spotify playlist of this AU, read the Wish Artbook, or rewatch a movie that has inspired the RFTS! plot in some way.
âŠâŠ..
36. Are there any kisses in your story?
HmmmmmâŠ.. *glances at Ashueño and Amnifico*
Oh well, since youâve asked me, I gueeeeess Iâm unfortunately now going to have to remove all the kisses I had included since yâall are so desperate to knowâŠ.. (/jk)
âŠâŠ..
38. Will the Royal Couple have villain transformations?
âŠâŠâŠ..
39. Whatâs your take on the âeating wishesâ thing?
As Iâve mentioned in my last post on how the magic system works in the RFTS!AU, Magnifico eats wish essence to reverse the costly effects of using Curse Magic. To put it simply, he uses them to make him more mentally stable.
.,,,,,,,,
40. What Easter Eggs are you planning to put in your story?
Awwwww, whereâs the fun in that? Find them yourselves >:)))
And who knows? Maybe certain fellow creators in the Wish Rewrite Fandom will make a reference in some of the chapters. Keep an eye out đ
âŠâŠ..
42. What exactly does Ashaâs job entail?
Being a kingâs apprentice is a way to gain experience and learn how to use magic by the king himself, so you could use the attained knowledge as to however you want. Share the talent with Rosas or Go out into the world.
However, when Magnificoâs reign started, he forbade magic usage other than he and his wife with the claim that itâs for the greater good and safety for Rosas. (He kinda had a point since criminal activity and accidents did decrease in number after that rule.)
Since Mag doesnât really need an apprentice, Asha is more of an assistant now, following in her dadâs footsteps before her. Sheâs tasked to do help with whatever Mag might need around his study such as keep the fire going or organise his papers. But Mag doesnât really like having her around a lot, (since she asks a lot of questions about his wish-keeping system) so he purposefully tells her to go carry out outside tasks such as go into the garden and help the gardeners or something.
âŠâŠ..
43. Did Magnifico make Sueñoâs bonds?
If I told you, would that make you more blood-thirsty enough to gather pitchforks and torches for his head? Because if you are, please donât. I still need this guy to stir up conflict in my story :((
(You can have him all you want though once Iâm done with him. Lmao.)
âŠâŠâŠ
44. How was Rosas founded?
Nearly a century ago, the kingdom was first built. Iâve read in the Art book that Rosas was apparently named to reference âBeauty and the Beast.â
Like, okâŠ.?
Anyways, I found that roses are meant to represent love, rebirth and beauty. So I decided to add more onto that than just have it as another reference. The kingdomâs founders wanted Rosas to be a place where people who are wary and feel outcasted by their homes can find and start a new beginning. To âRebirthâ and have a second chance to find the âbeauty and loveâ in their lives again,
Blue and white were made the royal colours because the blue was meant to stand for trust and reliability and white for new beginnings. Symbolising the past kings and queensâ responsibility to have their talents in sorcery be used to serve the people who come here. Thus, Rosasâ citizens all are in a variety of different cultures.
âŠâŠ..
45. Over how many days does your story take?
Iâm thinking within one month. Itâs a race-against-time sort of thing where Asha needs to find out how to confront the Royal Couple before they do something horrible on Rosasâ celebration of its 100th anniversary, which is literally just a month away.
âŠâŠ.
46. What was your favourite part of Wish? Are you translating that to your AU?
I really really loved how Magâs magic looked and how he went all evil-ish green as a tribute to past Disney villains. If we ignore the awkward transition he had from sympathetic to just plain psychotic, itâs a cool magic display. I kinda wished they went more full out on the final battle because it just felt so underwhelming asf.
Iâm keeping the magical final battle but with more magical funsies. :D
âŠâŠ.
47. Least favourite part?
Iâm frustrated how bland and empty the character interactions and emotional beats are since those kinds of moments are usually my favourite when it comes to movies.
Magnificoâs tragic loss of his village? âPfft- What tragedy? We donât need that in the movieâs 2nd half.â
Ashaâs dead father? âEh. We only needed him for a few mins and heâs non-existent from that point on.â
Valentino claims to be Ashaâs helpful animal sidekick. âDid I mention I have a deep voice? Oh, and my buttâs a funny thing too. Did I already mention that my voice is loud and soooo deep??â
Simonâs betrayal? âOh wow, that was a shockâŠ. Anyways, wanna start a rebellion?â
OMG, Sakinaâs wish is back!! âWhat was the wish about? Idk who cares.â
Ashaâs friendship with Star doesnât even feel that special to me?? GUYS, I felt more chemistry between Rapunzel and Pascal. COME ON, BUILD IT UP. DONâT JUST SAY âAwww, you and I are thinking the same thing~â AND EXPECT ME TO BUY THAT.
âŠâŠâŠ.
48. Whatâs your favourite aspect of the TFS!AU?
Idk why, but I like how thereâs a unique twist in your AU on how Wishing Stars donât have the best reputation to humans. Itâs a nice subversion that makes it stand out a little more. :)) Because usually, the idea of wishing on stars is always seen as a positive thing but thatâs not the case in this story. Itâs intriguing to watch characters slowly realise that not everything is what it seems.
That, and the hilarious dynamic youâve got going on between Cielo and Asha and how deep in denial they both are, even though itâs clear as day to the other TFS!cast. đ
(Wouldnât it be funny if TFS!Mag and Amaya also noticed? They may be going down a dark path but theyâre not blind, girl.)
âŠâŠ..
50. Whatâs a boring fact about you?
UhhhhhhâŠ. I like organising stuff by colour for fun...? Like, I used to pour out a box of legos and sort through them as a kind of pastime. I still organise coloured pencils in rainbow order if I could too. đ
âŠâŠâŠ
@annymation @uva124 @your-ne1ghbor @ficsinhistory @rascalentertainments @gracebethartacc @spectator-zee
Itâs a long read, but I think you guys would enjoy going through it regardless. I hope so anyways.
Btw, thx for all the fun questions Bo! đ Might post some more regarding your other doodle requests that Iâve put to the side for now if you donât mind. :))
New Comics Time!
(Hey, I'm getting it out before new comics day. Life has been busy)
Batman/Superman: World's Finest #31 and #32 -- I've been in and out of this comic, but I figured I'd hop back on board since I'm using All-In as the excuse read a bunch of comics. This was fun. Idk if I have much to say on the plot, but Gutierrez's art is so dynamic and fun for this. It really made all the action sequences pop.
Action Comics #1071 -- I am unfamiliar with a lot of the characters that Superman was thinking about while in the Phantom Zone, but I am intrigued by that ending. Also Kon and Kenan playing baseball was very fun. For the backup, it still feels like we're raising a few more questions than answers, but I'm still enjoying it.
Batman: Full Moon #1 -- Picked this up because why not and idk if I really care enough to keep reading but the art was good.
Catwoman #69 -- Now this was off to a strong start. I really liked the mystery and the use of technology against Selina. I liked the note of her reflecting that she'd accidentally grown roots. The art was also just gorgeous. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more. One little thing that did catch my eye the use of non-all upper case lettering which is something I've mainly seen in Marvel comics before. It's one of those little creative choices that always leaves me wondering about intent.
Green Lantern #16 -- Mainly picked this up for completion's sake and I am simply not invested enough in the green lantern side of the universe to continue reading. It was action packed and the art was pretty, but like I said, I wasn't really invested.
Titans #16 -- Up to this point, I was thinking to myself 'wow, comics these days really have great art' and then I started reading this and was like oh, yeah, we still have ugly art too lmao. I am biased because the most exciting part of this issue to me was when Renee showed up for two pages, but it was otherwise off to a fine start to this new run. The Titans do deserve to get their minds messed with every once in a while <3
Wonder Woman #14 -- I was going to try picking this up again but I got three pages in and was like 'actually I don't want to read this'. So I didn't. Some day I will read through this run, but not today.
Ok, I've seen someone mention it, so now I just have to ask: why is it that, when there's an m/m ship with a POC and a white character, the POC one has to be a bottom because otherwise the writer and whoever enjoyed the fic is racist?
I've seen it happen in multiple fandoms, and they all bring out shit like "imperialist culture" and other vague, rambling, explanations written by social media activists who spent too much time online, which are really not fucking answers, are they?
So, from someone who has spent most of their life in fandoms in which the main m/m ships were made by two white men (think BBC Merlin, Kingsman, etc), could someone with more expertise give me a better view of this part of fandom wank?
--
Well... you have to think about what it means to be the "bottom" in a fanfic. I mean the broad trends across fandoms.
If you've been in plenty of m/m fandoms, you can't tell me you haven't seen it:
The bottom (in a variety of senses) is the one the fic cares more about. Their feelings are the ones that need to be catered to. Their needs drive the plot. In the worst-written fic, the top is little more than a walking dildo and support prop.
Sure, it's not every fic, but it's reasonably common.
In a ship with two white guys, one of whom is a buff jock and one of whom is a willowy nerd, the willowy nerd will generally be Fandom's Favorite. If you happen to like the buff jock better, it can be kind of irritating to see that 99% of the fic doesn't really care about his feelings and assumes the reader is vastly more invested in the other dude. You're like "It's my pairing... but somehow not..."
It can make a person feel alone and unseen.
Now multiply that annoyance with identity stuff that makes it feel more actively hurtful and meaningful.
People phrase it as being about topping and bottoming, often because it's easy to browbeat people over writing a racist stereotype of a black guy with a big dick (never mind that this stereotype is pretty specific and the characters may not actually be of identities where it applies or where the fic writer is likely to apply it). But what they frequently are really getting at is:
I want my fave to be fandom's.
