i truly can’t describe with words how badly i want to see this scene redone with sean sullivan as old five again. i want old apocalypse five and young apocalypse five and a tiny little baby five blinking around while older fives chase him there was SO much potential and while i think this is one of the cooler scenes in this season (really not saying much) it could’ve been so much better if the creators simply cared even a little bit!! :(

all the people saying stuff abt the deli being fives name

i dont think its his name, but i also think its a missed opportunity to do something fun

like. fives name has been a tua mystery since day 1, why doesnt he have a name, was it his choice, if so why stick to five, how were the others given names and is that why five didnt get one etc etc

and none of those questions have been answered within the show (they have been answered outside of it but the statements of the creators often conflict with whats actually seen in the show.. so not reliable info basically). so there is an opportunity here to do what we did with ben in s3 - show how much five changes across timelines.

and in one sense, they could be making a statement here. five, unlike ben, is commanded more by nature than nurture. he always ends up the same regardless of his circumstances.

but given the general lack of care seen this season i generally think that the deli and the fives are more so a display of a lack of attention. the reason they all wear the same suit and have the same hairstyle, and are all the same age with the same appearance, its the same reason five doesnt change outfits after 7 years in the subway. the creators didnt care.

so i think that this would have been a really interesting opportunity to explore who five could have been. bring back old five, show us apocalypse five, toddler five with older fives looking after them, fives who got to have a family of their own and fives who were never a part of reginald's adopted children at all. irish fives and american fives, maybe even jewish fives if we follow aidan's faith/ethnicity (?).

we could have seen fives at different stages, fives from s1 and s2 and s3. we could have seen how five from the phoenix academy could butt heads with five from the umbrella academy over whose siblings deserve to live more. we could have seen founder five, missing arm and all, before he founds the commission. five from the comics could have made a cameo.

we could have had fives with different names. fives who grew up in the academy and did choose names. fives who were named by their birth mother. max could have been a five name, along with a thousand other names, and it could have shown that fives name isnt about him needing a name but instead how his family has affected him and how he sees himself.

instead we got.. basically nothing

“i felt that five had to have a love story” okay steve !! fine. i’ll humour you. picture this : lila and five in the subway. they’re travelling to different timelines, loosing hope, trying to find a way home. then they get to a timeline and five sees dolores. but she’s a human, not a mannequin. he falls for her. loves her. wants to stay with her in her timeline. and that’s why lila has to force him to come home. she has kids, a husband, a life. five wants to stay with dolores more than anything. but he goes home, back to his timeline, because he knows he has to save his family. because he loves them more.

As I’m trying to come to terms with whatever the fuck that was, I’ve decided that:

Seasons 1 and 2 are peak. Absolute masterpieces. Canon.

Season 3 can be taken or left. Has its moments, but overall not as good as the first two. Canon, but only if you want it to be.

Season 4 is a fucking crack fic written at 2am that the author rereads at a later date and decides to delete. Absolutely not canon.

Here's a list of things I liked in s4 because I need more than one morbidly beautiful opening shot to give me a purpose in life:

Confirmation that Ben and Viktor were close as children

Proof that Ben's always had a mean streak in him, the brainwashing just made him seem like a saint

The concept of the time subway

Five's Deli

That scene with Diego spinning in the air with bullets swirling around him

Jennifer having a Filipina actress

Diego and Lila's daughter being named Grace

Klaus practically being Claire's other parent

Luther embracing the silly

Gene and Jean

Also did the show just like forget that when Five saw Diego dead, he kept trying to wake him up in the apocalypse. Did they forget that he sat near his brother’s corpse completely distraught and Diego was the only person that Five actually shook? Five would never do this shit to him man

So let me get this straight: Five hid from Lila that he had found his previous journal that told them how to get home just so that he could deepen his relationship with her and hide from the world? So that he could completely forget about his beloved wife Dolores and go on to steal his brother's wife and the mother of their children? And nonetheless without any of his family members knowing where he and Lila are? Completely abandoning his family? And potentially letting them die in another apocalypse?
