Just a little bit of Christmas Crack
***
"No, no, I definitely have the winner," Hen said. "10-year-old female tripped and impaled herself in the eye with a sharpened candy cane."
The table of seasoned first responders collectively shivered, a mix of horror and professional fascination crossing their faces.
"No way. Mine's better," Chim challenged. "28-year-old man, allergic reaction to eggnog-flavored lubricant."
The whole table groaned at the thought of that.
"How am I the first to mention the Christmas Brawl of 2022?" Eddie asked. "Siblings got into a knock-down, drag-out fight over some Christmas ornament and were throwing punches on the front lawn dressed in reindeer costumes."
Bobby nodded, a wry smile crossing his face. "Now that was a Christmas to remember. I think Eddie may be our winner."
"Not so fast, Diaz," Maddie began. "I think dispatch has got this one in the bag. In fact, just last night we got a very interesting call."
Tommy started to turn red as Buck looked at her with pleading, horrified eyes.
"41-year-old male and his 34-year-old boyfriend decided to have a bit of fun with some Christmas roleplay," Maddie said, her voice matter-of-fact.
The eyes of the table widened, a mix of shock and anticipation.
"Maddie..." Buck begged, his voice a desperate whisper.
"Apparently, the older man was able to put the Santa suit on initially, but his little elf worked him up so much that the pants became too tight to get off."
The room erupted in a combination of groans, laughs, and looks of secondhand embarrassment. Buck looked like he wanted to disappear, while Tommy's face had turned an impressive shade of crimson.
"Don't worry, the 122 got everything all squared away," Maddie said.
"Yeah, but Sal's never gonna let me live it down," Tommy said.
"Deluca was there?" Bobby asked. "Maddie, I'm sorry, but Tommy deserves this win more than you do. Sal will be telling this story as part of his eulogy."
Buck pulled Tommy close, capturing his lips in a kiss that silenced the table's laughter.
"Worth it," he murmured against Tommy's mouth.
"Best Christmas ever," Tommy whispered back, grinning.

Thoughts on Grey’s Anatomy: 17X7
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
They did it! I can’t believe it! They actually killed DeLuca off! I’m so happy right now! As long time readers will know I have never been a Andrew DeLuca fan and I speculated back in the summer that they might be planning to write his character off after it was revealed that the planned finale for Season 16 included an explosion that was supposed to claim the life of one of the characters. I speculated that DeLuca was the most likely candidate with Tom and Jackson being the most likely runners up because I felt that they had gone as far as they could with DeLuca’s character and there wasn’t much left for him to do on the show.
Add that to the fact that the actor who plays DeLuca said a bunch of stuff to the press last year where he spoiled some pretty major plot points and stated that he knew things about where the show was going when he hadn’t even read a single script for the season yet and I was pretty sure his days were numbered. That being said, the show had teased us a bunch of times about firing, killing, or writing off the character during seasons 15 and 16 and they never went through with it so a big part of me was skeptical that they ever would.
But it turns out I was right! His days were numbered and they wound up killing him off in the Mid-Season Premiere! I’m still in shock. It hasn’t really sunk in yet to be honest. This episode honestly made me wish we’d gotten to see the remaining episodes and finale of Season 16 as planned. Based on what we know it looks like the plan was for Richard, Bailey, Meredith, and Carina to stage an intervention, DeLuca was to go away and get treatment and return to the hospital only to die tragically in an explosion.
Season 17 would have opened with the characters finding out about that and mourning his death and I think it would have been interesting to see Meredith navigate that as in the Finale Hayes asked her out and she said yes. It seems likely that if the COVID-19 Pandemic had not hit when it did and shut down production and altered filming for this season we would have seen Meredith and Hayes go out for a drink and start dating.
Seeing Meredith navigate the loss of her ex-boyfriend who she was no longer close to while in the beginning stages of her relationship with Hayes would have been very interesting and I’m sorry we didn’t get to see that. I’m also sorry that due to safety restrictions Meredith and Hayes haven’t had much screen time this season, but it looks like that’s about to change as I’ll get into a bit later.
Back to the episode at hand. I never liked DeLuca as a character and I hated him with Meredith so I’m glad that they killed him off and that we never have to deal with that nonsense again. I’m glad that they caught the human trafficker Opal and took those people down. I was never super invested in that storyline so I’m glad they wrapped that up. I feel so bad for Carina though. She’s a great character and is wonderfully acted by Stefania Spampinato.
My heart broke for her in this episode because while I won’t miss her brother I know that she will and will be absolutely gutted when she finds out that he’s died especially after she worked so hard to get him help and treatment for his Bipolar Disorder. I’m glad she has Maya there to support her.
LOL at Bailey sleeping through the whole damn episode! What did I miss indeed! That poor woman slept through DeLuca getting stabbed, almost dying, not dying, having surgery twice, and then actually dying as well as the other shenanigans going on at the hospital. I loved that she was asleep at Meredith’s bedside especially after they spent a good chunk of Season 16 fighting.
I also feel really bad for Richard in that he’s obviously grateful that DeLuca helped save his life and wanted to help and when Owen turned him down because it wasn’t a good idea for him to scrub in Richard lurked in the background in the OR gallery the whole time to make sure that everything was okay. Plus he can’t talk to Meredith about it right now because she’s in a coma which must be so difficult for him. The extra stress also puts his sobriety at risk and that worries me.
I got to be honest I am struggling to understand Teddy’s point of view this season. She’s being really awful! She’s being cruel to Tom. She was cruel to Owen. I don't know what Teddy expected to have happen. Both Cristina and Amelia walked away from their marriages to Owen and moved on with their lives in large part because they realized Owen was in love with Teddy and always would be.
And then she finally gets what she’s wanted all these years and the minute she realizes Amelia’s baby might be Owen’s and not Link’s she runs back to Tom and has a several months long affair with him and then drops him like a hot potato as soon as she realizes that the baby is Link’s and after Owen finds out about the affair she refuses to talk to Tom for months and then comes crawling back to him and wants to be his friend after Owen makes it clear he wants nothing to do with her. WTF?
I feel bad for Tom. I really like his character. He’s super interesting and complex and he deserves better than someone who treats him like that. Tom is a good man at heart and he treated Teddy like gold and in return she’s done nothing but break his heart and stomp all over him when he’s already down. He deserves someone better. I’ve never been an Owen fan, but honestly Teddy is behaving so horribly I’m on his side on this one.
They had some great scenes in the OR together, but Teddy clearly read too much into it. Every time he gives her a crumb she’s convinced he’s forgiven her and wants to give her a second chance and that’s not it at all. Owen has been clear. He doesn’t forgive her and he doesn’t want to get back together with her. All he wants is to co-parent peacefully and work together as colleagues because he values her skills as a surgeon. That’s it.
It was cute to see Teddy Face Timing with Leo. I’m glad they are finding safe ways to incorporate the kids into the story. Speaking of which, the scene where Amelia and Maggie tell Zola that her Mom has been placed on a vent and she might not come off it was heartbreaking. That kid has grown into her own as an actress and really holds her own in that scene.
Her line about how she didn’t want them to tell Bailey or Ellis yet because they’re too young to understand broke me heart. Zola’s only a few years older than them but she’s old enough to understand the impact of what’s happening in a way that they can’t. And she remembers how hard it was when Derek died. When Cristina left. When Alex left. She doesn’t want to put her siblings though the same thing especially when Alex’s departure is still so fresh for them and they never got a chance to really know their Dad. The fact that Zola can recognize that at such a young age is raw and heart breaking.
We saw Winston and Maggie reconnect this episode which would have been super hot and enjoyable if Meredith hadn’t just been put on a ventilator! The scene where Jackson showed up looking for Maggie was too funny! I loved the scenes with Jackson, Link, and Winston in the backyard having beers! Winston has a great sense of humour and seems to be a calming presence. I like the idea of those three being friends.
Link’s face when he realized that Winston doesn’t know that Maggie and Jackson used to date and are also step-siblings. I’ll be interested to see Winston’s reaction when that comes out. I loved Link’s rant about how worried he was about Meredith and what her declining health and potential death was doing and would do to Amelia. Did anyone else catch that he called Amelia his wife? I’m calling it. They’re foreshadowing an Amelink wedding!
I liked hearing Jackson talk about how Meredith is family and they’re all worried and Winston’s comments about how all they can do is just keeping moving physically and metaphorically. I’m also loving Amelia and Maggie’s wardrobes this season. Their sweaters in this episode were gorgeous! Hats off to the wardrobe department! They’re looking good!
I loved seeing Jo and Hayes work together again because I love their friendship, but to be honest I was expecting more of the friendly teasing and banter of last season where she egged him on about Meredith and they traded barbs. Their scenes in this episode were a lot more intense and agitated. She totally played him with that line about Meredith.
He kept saying no to taking Luna to see her Mom and so Jo made it personal for him. If Meredith asked to see her kids Hayes would never say no and he would move heaven and earth for her. By making that connection Jo got him to agree to her plan. I also love that the reason he kept saying no in the beginning was because of what happened to Meredith.
She went from laughing and joking to being put on a vent and he doesn’t want to run the risk with any other patient and it’s obviously eating him up inside. He misses her. He cares about her and he’s clearly terrified about the possibility of her not waking up. That being said, Jo’s line where she compared Alex leaving her for Izzie because he found out he had kids he didn’t know he had and sending her a heartfelt letter to Hayes spending years watching his wife and the mother of his two boys die of cancer was way out of line. Super not okay. I really think that Jo is going to adopt that baby. I think that’s why they are setting up her interest in OBGYN.
In other news, Nico is still a terrible boyfriend to Levi. I honestly don’t know why Levi puts up with him. Levi really shone in this episode I think. He felt responsible for what happened, but instead of bungling things and making things worse like he might have done in the past he got out of his own way and asked Dr. Khan who was a vascular surgeon in Pakistan prior to immigrating to the U.S. to take his place.
I feel like this episode implies that the Beach is limbo now as I don’t know how else DeLuca could have ended up there as he wasn’t someone who was close to Meredith the way that Derek, George, Richard, and Bailey are. Not sure how I feel about that as I was kind of liking the is it a COVID dream is it the afterlife ambiguity.
Onto next week’s promo! I’m not excited that they appear to be setting up an episode in which the other characters mourn DeLuca’s passing as none of the other characters apart from Carina were really that close to him. They spent the last two seasons establishing that everyone hated his guts, considered him a nuisance, and only put up with him because they had to. So to me the other characters mourning him doesn’t feel authentic or real. It just feels forced.
There are several things I am excited about though. Seeing Maggie’s reaction to his death I think will be interesting. She was visibly upset and ran to his side when Alex beat him up in Season 13 and mourning the loss of your ex-boyfriend who you were no longer close to while being in a committed relationship with someone new I think is an interesting dynamic. She’s kinda standing in for Meredith here because she’s on a vent.
I’d like to see Catherine support Richard and make up for her horrible behaviour last season. And the best thing of all: Hayes!!! In the promo trailer we see Hayes sitting at Meredith’s bedside talking to her about how she needs to fight and how they all need her to fight. Bring it on! It’s about damn time! And Derek’s back and he’s … fishing? I’m excited to see what happens there and if they actually get to talk and have a real conversation this time. It has also been announced that Sarah Drew will be returning for a cameo as Dr. April Kepner this season so I’m excited for that!
Until next time!

Station 19 Season 4 ending/ Season 5 hopes under cut along with random fandom feels
Overall, I actually REALLY liked the ending of the season. I feel like the episode covered a fair amount of ground decently considering how pressed for time. I obviously think it could have been better, but the timeline was just so off for the season. I think they did the best with the set up they had.
The writing was a bit all over the place this season. None of it was really bad, there were some AMAZING scenes and monologues, but it kinda seemed like all the writers weren’t talking to one another. The episodes didn’t always mesh well together, especially after the winter hiatus.
I am a FIRM believer that Maya knew something was coming her way - now IDK if she thought she was gonna be relieved of duty, but I rewatched the scene she made the call to save Zaza (spelling?) and I think it was a very calculated move despite the risk. She knew she was going to get reprimanded. It was a subtle build up, but they’ve had a lot of hints at the higher ups not really taking super well to a woman in chage.
Additionally, there were multiple instances this season they had Maya verbally reiterate that being captain isn’t the most important thing anymore. She was willing to risk it when she went after Andrew and Carina, she wasn’t quite there with the sex traffickers when they arrested Dean and Sullivan - but the cogs were in motion. She even said something about how not being on the track is okay.
Marina wedding was cute enough, loved the dancing. It could have been better, sure. But tbh I have little complaints.
I’m still unsure how I feel about Miller/Vic but I do sort of wish they let Miller shoot his shot, give him at the very least - some closure. This man has had a rough fucking go this year but has made it through it all amazingly. I just want what is best for him. Dean has such a level head on his shoulders, I really hope one day he gets a leadership position in the station.
Travis and Vic’s heart to heart about Theo and Emmett was really cute. I feel like we lost some friendship dynamics throughout season 4 - there was just less about being friends and more about the system and covid and romantic relationships. I liked seeing that core friendship survive it all. Theo and Vic are cute enough, def not endgame in my eyes and I do want Vic to just be single for a bit. But I get what they’re doing. I think Theo is more for Travis’s development than Vic’s.
Emmett and Travis are cute, I don’t love or hate them. I do just wish we had some slow burn on this show aside from Dean/Vic - but that’s one sided.
Jack and Inara’s breakup tbh was great. I think it’s an awesome send off for Inara - letting her go on her terms, ya know? I just don’t want them to throw Jack at Andy right away. Like if it eventually happens cool but right now? No.
SULLIVAN. UGH. I WAS ROOTING FOR YOU MAN. AND YOU HAD TO DO THAT. I’M MAD. For me it’s not just that he betrayed, Maya (bc yes she took him in but idt the man has to be indebted to her forever) but he offered himself. He elevated himself so much, wanting to skip the line. If Maya can’t be captain why isn’t it Jack or Andy? Or a LT from another station? Sullivan doesn’t deserve it yet. I wanted Sullivan to work his way up the right way.
BUT I ALSO HATE HOW PPL REALLY SHOW THEIR FUCKING RACISM WITH SULLIVAN. There are so many valid reasons to be mad at Sullivan or dislike him but I made the mistake of going in the twitter tags after the finale and people are fucking gross and racist.
I feel like we got a taste of old Andy back the last episode - like season 1&2 competing for captaincy Andy, ya know? There was a fire to her. I just wish we got answers about her pregnancy and some details on her family situation. Also can we discuss how FUCKING FINE ANDY LOOKED AT THE WEDDING? She had the best look hands down.
One of my favorite scenes of the episode was Vic and Carina - I just wish there was a mention of Andrew.
Katherine Bishop is adorable. Vic’s parents are goals. Bailey is amazing. Theo is a cutie. The fucking end.
I hope next season has a time jump with flashbacks.
Main things I want for season 5:
Give Carina DeLuca storylines and friends
More Vic!!!!!!! More more more Vic!!! Give her stories outside of men (including Travis)
Introspection into Sullivan - I think there is slightly more at play then we have been given.
More fires
Resolution/closure to Dean/Vic
More Dean conflict with raising Pru/JJ’s parents
Jack finding his foster siblings and not throwing himself at another woman
Travis’s mom finding out about her husband
More of Andy’s family!
Episodes addressing why Maya and Sullivan became firefighters - they’ve done everyone else but them
PRT!!!!
More Ben scenes - especially if it involves Ben and his boys, I love that dynamic. I also wouldn’t mind seeing more of Ben’s sister.
A new probie

Part 1. Part 2. Part 3. Part 4. Part 5. Part 6.
This is the last part of the Cactus Soulmates series. This part is longer than all of the others, but it feels like an epilogue. I never meant to take this little series this far (still @mansikkaomenabanaani‘s fault) or to make it angsty at all, but I guess that’s just how my mind works!
There is some Maribel in this (in the second scene). I wrote that scene before 2x06 came out, which is a good thing because I don’t think I can write Maria anymore, at least not like this.
[brief mentions of PTSD, mental health issues, medication, alcoholism, war]
Isobel knocked lightly on the open door of the bedroom, where Michael and Alex lay tangled on the bed. Michael immediately looked up and nodded at Alex, who was sound asleep. He untangled himself from Alex silently and gave their intertwined souls a pat, so that they remained by Alex's side, as Michael joined Isobel at the door.
“He hasn't slept this much in a while,” he murmured, closing the door behind him. “I don't want to wake him up.”
Isobel nodded. It had been a couple of days since Alex had freaked out and tried to break the soul bound. They'd gone back to Alex's cabin, once Alex had renounced his project and the most urgent issues had been clear, and he and Michael had spent most of their time sleeping or resting since, exhausted.
I think we need to stay on Earth for a while,” Isobel said. “Alex needs some time before we make him go back to a foreign planet.”
“But he grew up here,” Michael frowned. “Maybe it's what's triggering him in the first place.”
Isobel bit her lip. “It's possible, but here is also where he has friends, and people like him. He needs help. More than we can give him.”
“Yeah,” Michael sighed. “But he seemed okay on Antar? And our mind-healers−”
“They're good, but they won't understand human psychology. Alex hasn't talked to us much about his past, but you of all people know what the spikes on his soul mean.”
“I know,” Michael chuckled. “I agree. We need to stay here for now. I'll give him as much time as he needs. You don't have to stay, though.”
“I think Max is going to stay,” Isobel said. “Liz doesn't seem ready to leave this place. She's got her father and her sister.”
“What about you?”
“I don't know yet. I think I might explore this planet a little. For the time being, I'll stay around here. Maybe find a place in town that's a bit larger than here.”
“Does it have anything to do with Maria?” Michael asked with a smirk. Isobel raised an eyebrow. “I may have been wrapped up in Alex, but I know my sister.”
“I don't know what you mean,” Isobel coughed.
“Don't worry, I'm just happy for you. She seems like a good person.”
Isobel nodded begrudgingly. “I'm going to start making arrangements. We'll need proper visas if we're going to stay.”
Michael yawned. “I think I'll try to have another nap,” he said.
“This really wore you out,” Isobel observed.
“Yeah. It was...more painful than I could ever imagine. I−” Michael bit his lip, catching her eyes. “I never understood, what it must have been like for you.”
“Our bond was never this strong, so it wasn't...I'm not sure either of you would have survived, if Alex had gone through with it. You, maybe. Alex would have absorbed all the energy and he wouldn't have made it.”
Michael swallowed. “Fuck. I...I still can't believe he wanted to do that.”
“He didn't want to, Michael. He sincerely thought you'd be happier if he wasn't there.”
“Yeah. It's so fucked up. I love him so much, but he can't even see it because he thinks so little of himself.”
Isobel nodded. “Just talk to him about getting help, okay?”
“I will,” Michael said. “I'll do everything in my power to support him.”
*
“Isobel!” Maria exclaimed, looking up from where she was cleaning the counter. “What are you doing here?”
“I know you finish early tonight,” Isobel said. “Michael and Alex are celebrating their first year anniversary by going out to dinner, but I want them to have the house tonight. I thought maybe we could−” she hesitated, uncharacteristically shy.
“Play?” Maria offered with a smile. Isobel still didn't understand how Maria could make her lose all her haughtiness and reduce her to a puddle of softness. She made her melt. “Of course. Give me a minute to finish here, and we can go over to my place.”
The last six months, since they'd come to Earth, had been trying. More than Isobel imagined it would be. Acclimating to Earth's culture and climate, to say nothing of the humans' general distrust of anything alien, had been hard for the three siblings, but more than that, they'd all had relationships to fight for.
Alex and Michael were finally doing better, but it had taken a while. Alex's embarrassment over his major freak out had led to him meekly agreeing to anything Michael proposed for weeks, and his therapy session brought out the ugliness of his PTSD−Isobel had had time to learn all kind of things about human psychology, and she was almost bored enough to start writing a book about how it might be useful to Antarian mind healers. Alex had had constant nightmares and daily panic attacks for several months, despite heavy medication. Out of desperation, Michael and Isobel had seriously thought about putting him on a ship back to Antar and getting a mind healer to erase his traumatic memories altogether, but Alex had put a stop to that before they could put the plan in motion.
And then just as Alex was starting to get better, Michael had crashed. The weight of his worry for Alex and his difficulties adapting to Earth had been too much for him. His mental health had always been a fragile equilibrium, for as long as Isobel could remember. Their parents' death in the war when they were seven had led Michael to a string of bad foster placements, while Max and Isobel had been adopted fairly quickly, and Michael had never completely recovered from the abuse he'd endured. His soul didn't match Alex's by mistake. Far from Antar and the mind healers he'd seen there, he'd held things together by the skin of his pants for as long as Alex needed him to be strong, and then he'd fallen off the wagon and gone onto a three-night-bender.
Isobel sighed, trying to focus back on the present. Alex and Michael had found a balance of sort after Michael had admitted he wasn't doing well, holding each other up and talking a lot about their issues. They deserved their night out. They deserved some rest and good times. She just hoped the world would be kind enough to give it to them.
Max and Liz has found out that a soul bond, even a strong one, wasn't enough to make a working couple, and it had gone in fits and starts. Thankfully, their souls didn't spend their whole time stuck together and they would separate with a bit of coaxing. After some spectacular arguments and truly disgusting public make-out sessions, they'd figured out that a traditional relationship would simply never suit them. Isobel got to hear far too many details about their arrangements. She regretted ever asking.
Isobel herself was rather tired of being a shoulder to cry on, however much she loved her brothers and her brother in law. Earth was boring as hell, and she was more than ready to go home. Except for one tiny detail.
That detail was named Maria DeLuca. The woman snapped her fingers in front of Isobel's face to bring her out of her thoughts and dragged her inside her apartment. “Isobel, are you alright?”
“Yes, sorry,” Isobel shook her head. “Just thinking.”
“You want something to drink?”
“Do you still have that lemonade drink? I'm not in the mood for alcohol.”
“Sure,” Maria smiled sweetly. She brought two glasses and a pitcher back, and they sat down on the cushioned floor in her little meditation room.
Isobel focused for a moment, floating her soul between them. She marveled, not for the first time, at how good it looked. The charred part was only a spot now, rather than a gaping hole. The rest was growing and flourishing like a budding flower. It was completely different from what it had been, even before Noah−and it was beautiful.
Maria's own beautiful soul approached hers. Isobel felt the sudden warmth as their souls touched lightly, brushing and exploring each other. Then Maria added her hands into the mix, stroking Isobel's soul like she would a cat, and she smiled. Isobel smiled back.
Their relationship had been anything but easy. Isobel was not an easy woman to approach, for one. Despite the thread of understanding she and Maria had shared the night they first met, through all of that drama, they were as different as two women could be. They butted head over the silliest things all the time−and okay, maybe it was part of the charm.
But then, Maria had had to make the decision to bring her mother to an assisted living facility, and Isobel had been the one who was there. Alex and Liz had tried, but they were both also going through difficult times, and their support wasn't the help Maria needed. So Isobel had gone with her to visit the facility, had helped her fill out the paperwork and had hugged her when it got too hard.
That day, Maria had touched her soul for the first time.
Isobel had freaked out completely. She'd run out, and found herself a sobbing and whimpering mess in Alex's arms. She didn't know exactly why she'd run to him, but he'd been the one who understood. He'd soothed her and then slowly, step by step, brought her back to Maria. Maria who could see Isobel's soul and wasn't horrified.
Maria who could touch Isobel's soul and still want to talk to her.
Their souls didn't smooch or velcro together. Not yet. They caressed each other like children who would stroke their cheeks together. They shaped themselves around each other. They bloomed together. Maria had carefully, patiently, watered Isobel's soul until it was almost healed, and her own broad, flowery soul now had a space, between petals, where Isobel's could nestle.
Focused on the soul, Isobel felt the kiss on her lips before she saw Maria lean over.
*
“Isobel,” Alex greeted her. He turned and opened his arms to hug her.
Isobel returned the hug with a sigh of pleasure. Such spontaneous gestures from Alex were new and rare and she treasured each of them.
“Something changed,” he noticed as he let her go. “You're...happy.”
Isobel caught her soul in her hand and held it up to him for inspection, giddy with excitement. “Look.”
Alex tilted his head. “It's healed. Wow, that's amazing, Isobel! You're amazing. I'm happy for you.”
“Thank you,” Isobel smiled. It was funny, how in the course of the last year, Alex's opinion had started to mean more to her than even her brothers'. They'd truly become best friends in every way.
“Thank you,” Alex said, dragging her in to sit down on the couch with him. “I've never really thanked you for approaching me that day at the hospital.”
Isobel tucks her leg under her and turns to be able to really look at him. “For a while there, I almost regretted upending your life like that.”
“Don't. Don't ever regret it. The bad stuff was always going to come out someday, and I'm incredibly grateful that I had you and Michael when that happened. I'm just sorry I made you both suffer.”
Isobel took a second to appreciate the progress there, because even three months ago Alex would have said something along the line of “I don't deserve you” and “You would have been better off without me”. “We love you, Alex. This suffering is part of life, and honestly we've put you though the wringer too. But you're worth every second of it.”
Alex choked on his breath a little and hugged her again, tightly.
“Where's Michael?” Isobel asked after they'd sitting in a comfortable silence for a while.
“He went for a walk. Should be back any minute.” Alex made a move with his hand to check on his soul's location. Their velcroed souls usually hanged somewhere between them when they moved away from each other, invisible to most people on this planet and intangible unless you knew what you were looking for. “Yes, he's just out the door.”
On cue, Michael walked in, his sun-kissed face lighting up at the sight of them. “Can I join in on the hug?” he asked with a wide smile.
Alex pressed himself closer to Isobel to make space for him on his other side. Michael wrapped his arms around both of them.
“What has you two so happy?” Isobel asked. Her own joy over her healed soul was still there, but she could feel their happiness bleed out into her mindspace.
“Nothing special,” Alex said. “We've been talking about the future.”
“Thinking about traveling,” Michael added. “Maybe different places on Earth first, and then spend some time back on Antar. I don't really have any anchor there since you and Max are here, but Alex has barely seen any of it in the six months we were there.”
“That sounds like a good idea,” Isobel smiled. She was relieved that they weren't thinking about moving back to Antar completely, as it would put her in front of a tough choice.
“We wouldn't be gone long, just a few weeks at a time. We can both work remotely, but we could also use an actual vacation.”
“I'll miss you, but you do,” Isobel said. “Do you want me to plan a trip around the world for you? I could do that.” She laughed and feigned offense at the twin horrified expression on Michael and Alex's faces. “I'm joking. This is your vacation, you get to go wherever you want.”
“Oof,” Michael breathed.
“I'm sure you'd plan something beautiful,” Alex said. “But I'm the one who's from here, and I have a few ideas already.”
“Awesome,” Isobel smiled, rising from the couch. “Start planning, I'll go make us some lunch.”
She expected Alex to go get his laptop immediately, but he sat back instead, and she heard him pull Michael into a kiss as soon as she turned her back on them. From the corner of her eyes, she watched them through the open door of the kitchen, cuddling together. She smiled even wider when she noticed something.
The twin cactus souls, squished between their bodies, were growing tiny flowers between their spikes.

It’s All in a Hat
Otherwise known as Five times Michael told people off when they touched his hat and one time he didn’t Also known as the fic I wrote @christchex to show her my undying love and gratitude for being who she is.
And also completely written because of this post by @monluna-dreamer
Small note of warning for Wyatt Long being a class a racist douchebag
1. Michael’s hat is a no go zone. Everyone knows this, and everyone respects it, because if they so much as lay a finger on the black cowboy hat Michael will either a) tear you a new one or b) outright punch you.
Liz Ortecho, however, has been gone from Roswell for ten years, and as she wasn’t there when Michael got the hat, she doesn’t know just how attached he is to it. Which is why she casually picks it up one night they’re in the Pony and starts to look at it, turning it in her hands to look at the seams and inside, frankly curious about the hat that spends so much time on Michael’s head.
“Where did Mikey get this hat?” She looks up, looking for someone to answer her but instead freezes at the way they’re all looking at her in shock. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
“Because, Ortecho,” Michael says behind her. He does not sound pleased. “There’s three rules about the hat.”
“Oh?”
“One, don’t ever touch the hat.” He plucks it out of her fingers and places it on his head. “Two, don’t make any kind of remarks about the hat. And three, don’t ask about the hat.”
Her eyes follow him as he turns around and walks out of the Pony. From the look on Isobel and Maria’s faces this behavior when it comes to the hat isn’t new, though Max looks like he’s slightly annoyed. Probably because Michael just left when they were there to discuss important things.
“He’s not kidding, Liz. Don’t ever mess with the hat.”
She looks at Max. “Why, though?”
“We don’t know,” Isobel replies. “He never told us where it came from. Just that it’s sacred.”
Her voice turns nasal when she says the word sacred. Liz frowns at that but doesn’t say anything. Maria just looks pensive. Like she has an idea but doesn’t want to share for her own peace of mind. Liz is curious, maybe one day she’ll get the story. Until then; point taken.
2. Kyle Valenti likes to use the same excuse, he hasn’t been in Roswell for ten years so he doesn’t know things. Never mind that his mother is the sheriff and keeps him apprised on all things Roswellian, no matter if he wants to or not, he will still live by the “I didn’t know” if he can. Luckily for him he’s charming enough that it usually works when he does do something wrong.
Of course there’s people that don’t buy it. Arturo is one, Alex the second, and Rosa the third. Isobel will give him the benefit of the doubt if in a good mood, Liz is to kind not to believe him, Maria just shakes her head and Max just frankly doesn’t care.
Then there’s Michael Guerin, who sees through all kinds of bullshit Kyle talks about, so much so that Kyle has started to test the limits of what he can get away with. He’s tried it with cars, he’s tried it with alcohol, he tried it with the Evans siblings(which did not go well) and he’s tried it with the Airstream. The number is currently 0-1 in Guerin’s favor, but he still tries. He likes the challenge.
He decides to try it with the hat, because he’s had a few beers to many, sitting at the junkyard with Alex, Guerin is being a broody shit, and he’s bored without any alien shenanigans to deal with. Which is something he never thought he would think.
“Hey, Guerin, what’s actually up with the hat?”
“None of your beeswax, Valenti,” is the reply he gets. Rude.
“No, tell me, what’s up with it?” He asks as he reaches out a hand towards the hat on Michael’s head. He doesn’t expect the mighty punch he receives to the shoulder. “Ow! What the fuck, Guerin?”
“Kyle.” The disapproval in Alex’s voice is enough to let him know how much of a brat he’s being.
“Sorry, Guerin.”
“Whatever, Valenti.” He knows Guerin isn’t done being pissed off, but he still hands him a beer so he guesses he’s sort of forgiven. For now.
He realizes he’s wrong when he gets up to pee about 15 minutes later and he falls over because his shoelaces are tied together, to Guerin’s roaring laugh and Alex’s coughing that means he’s trying to hide a laugh. Stupid telekinesis.
3. Wyatt Long is a douchebag, it’s known, it’s heard, it’s just a fact of life. He’s a white privilege, New Mexico 1st born son of the worst caliber, who spews racism like it’s fact, slurs like they have meaning, offence like it’s the law, be it against latinx, black or native people. He doesn’t care who he hurts, who he offends, who hates him.
What he does care about is who he hates, and Michael Guerin is on the near top of that list, just underneath Max Evans.
Stupid fucking Michael Guerin, who runs around like he owns Roswell in that stupid, fucking black cowboy hot.
Only good, proud, ranger sons like Wyatt should be allowed to wear hats like that. That Michael Guerin, whore and drunk that he is, runs around in one is a disgrace.
One night in the Pony, Wyatt decides to do something about that after a bourbon of eight. Guerin is sitting at the bar as usual, flirting with the DeLuca chick. She’s hot as fuck, but a bartender is beneath his standards. Even if he would like to fuck her to check if she’s up to par.
“Hold up guys, I’mma get Guerin’s hat,” he tells his group of friends, grinning as they holler and yell after him as he walks up to the bar. He might be a little unsteady, but who the fuck cares.
“What do you want, Long?”
“Well I could always do with a night in your bed, gorgeous,” he replies, giving DeLuca his most winning smile. The look of disgust on her face just fuels the rage, as does the snort Guerin lets out. “What, you think you’re so much better than me, Guerin? At least I have a house, not a tin can.”
“That the best you can do, Long? Cause that’s just sad, I happen to like my tin can, and guess what, so does Maria.”
Wyatt completely misses DeLuca’s hissed out “Guerin!” Or Guerin cringing at the tone in her voice. All he can hear is the angry rush of blood in his ears.
“The fuck do you have this hat for anyway, Guerin? You ain’t no fucking ranger and you don’t fucking deserve to wear it.” He picks up the black hat and crunches his fingers around the top of it.
He doesn’t realize he’s been punched until he’s already falling backwards with a hell of a pain in his nose, his head this close to smacking into the ground as he lands, hard. He can already feel the blood starting to gush from the broken nose.
“You wanna talk smack about where I live, go right on ahead. But don’t you ever fucking touch the hat, or question why I wear it, Long.”
He’s too busy trying not to cry from the pain to notice as Michael steps over him, hat on his head, and leaves into the night.
4. Maria DeLuca is not a woman who doesn’t know herself. She has far to much of a psychic ability for that, has had far to many struggles in her life for that and has sacrificed too many things for that. She knows who she is inside and out, she knows what she’s worth and she knows that she deserves. She doesn’t have to fool herself into anything. Even if she did, her ability wouldn’t let her for long. Most times it’s a gift, sometimes it’s a curse.
“You’re never gonna let me touch it, are you?”
She knows it’s the wrong question when Michael leers, drunkenly, at her. “Gorgeous, you can touch it any time you want.”
“Your hat, Guerin.”
She watches him quickly pick up the hat from the bar, putting it into his lap instead of anywhere near she can reach from behind the bar. It’s all the answer she needs, isn’t it.
“Maria-“
“Don’t.” She smiles at him, a small smile she knows is full of sadness. “It’s okay.”
“It’s not,” Michael answers. His eyes, though drunk, mirrors her sadness. It makes her feel a tiny bit better because she knows they both do want this to work, in their own way.
“Yes, it is. You can’t help how you feel.” The words Liz told her echoes in her head. She knows Michael likes her, truly likes her, but she can never compete with Alex. And while she knows Alex is fine with Michael and her, she doesn’t know how fine she is by always coming in second place. Even if Michael chose her out in the world, she’s very rarely first in his head. “Did he give you the hat?”
Michael just looks at her. She won’t be getting a reply any time soon. For some reason, she’s okay with that. Maybe because she knows it would hurt more if he did.
“If there’s any woman in the world I would let touch the hat, it would be you.”
She surprises herself by laughing. For Michael Guerin that’s the perfect endearment and she adores him for it. Especially since she feels how much he means it.
“I need some time.”
Michael nods, unsurprised but still saddened by it. “Text me, yeah?”
Maria nods in reply, maintaining a smile on her face as Michael, and the iconic hat, leaves her bar. It’s only when the door closes behind him that she lets herself feel the sadness of what could have been.
5. Arturo Ortecho is used to tourists. It’s the one big thing you have to deal with owning a diner in New Mexico, but as they are his biggest revenue stream, he doesn’t mind them. In fact he welcomes them gladly, with his alien themed menus, alien themed outfits and antennas. He loves their ooo’s and their aaa’s, he loves giving them genuine mexican cuisine that they all seem to enjoy, he loves his old jukebox with silly old songs that adults fawn over and children thinks are stupid. He loves it all.
The only thing he might have a slight issue with is when they come in and don’t respect other people’s property. He’s far to used to people trying to destroy the diner after… But he doesn’t negotiate when it comes to leaving his other customers things alone.
“You should leave that hat alone before the owner sees you,” Arturo says with a look at the three teens who are now frozen by Michael’s hat, one of their hands reaching out towards it. “He doesn’t take kindly to it being touched, a true cowboy never does. The hat is what makes the man, you would do well to remember that.”
The kids look from the hat to him, to the antenna on his head (which is fair), before they nod respectfully, leaving it alone and walking back to their seats. Funny, it’s been a while since anyone nodded respectfully to him. Especially kids.
“Thanks, Mr. Ortecho.”
“Bah.” He turns towards Michael, who’s coming out of the kitchen wiping his hands. “You fix my fridge?”
“Needs a new part, but I got one at the junkyard so I’ll be back later.”
“Good. Take some meatloaf with you when you go, you’re too skinny.”
He doesn’t need to see Michael to know he’s smiling as he picks up the meatloaf, and the hat, on his way out the door. He’s a good boy, that one.
+1 “Has anyone besides you ever worn or even touched the hat, Michael?” Isobel asks, one night as the entire group sit in her living room, bottles of tequila and bourbon cluttered on her living room table. They’ve been celebrating life, just because they can, just because everyone is alive and just because they want to.
“Why is everyone so damn curious about the damn hat? It’s just a black cowboy hat.”
Maria snorts. “That’s a damn lie and you know if. You start fights over that hat. You punched Wyatt Long so hard he broke his nose over the hat.”
Michael sighs, and looks down on the floor. “Long deserved it.”
“Long deserves a lot of things. But he’s not the first you’ve punched over it,” Max interjects, giving Michael a look when he looks up from the floor.
“Come on Mikey, just tell us,” Liz says, pouting as Michael’s gaze swings over to her. His eyes does the round after that, from Isobel, Kyle, Rosa, Maria, Jenna, Max and finally landing on Alex. Alex doesn’t do anything but smile encouragingly. Because Alex Manes, last son of Jesse Manes, current Captain of the United States Air Force, resident of Jimmy Valenti’s cabin in Roswell, New Mexico, is the only one, besides Michael, who knows the origin story of Michael’s hat. No one has ever asked him if he knows and he would never tell anyone.
“Oh my god, Alex knows?” Isobel asks, shock and delight on her face. They all look curious now, even Maria, who’s been the biggest advocate of them figuring out their shit since her and Michael broke up.
Michael smiles, and gives Alex a small nod. Guess he is telling someone after all. “Of course I know. I bought him the hat.”
There’s silence for a second, before questions hurtle at them from everyone in the room. How and why and when but Alex and Michael doesn’t answer any of them, they just look at each other and smile, remembering a dusty, hot weekend in Kansas when Alex was on leave. A weekend without cares, without fear and without worry, where Alex found the perfect black cowboy hat while out buying sustenance, and brought it back to their motel room. A weekend that like all others ended on a sad note, but was perfect the way it was.
“Does he let you wear it?”
Both Alex and Michael look at Jenna, before they turn back to one another. A second later the black cowboy hat floats from the hallway and lands on Alex’s head. It’s still a bit big on him, but it still makes him smile.
“Yeah, I do.”
They only have eyes for each other, as the room explodes in a symphony of joyous noise.

do you think that cj and toby ever had a relationship or hooked up before the show started? or during? i’m just... so sad that we never got to learn more about them bc they had such a special bond🥺 not that i don’t love danny!! i mean he *loves* cj but idk, i’m just so in love with cj and toby right now. ily have a great day! also- do you watch grey’s? what are some of your thoughts and faves for that? sorry to bombard you with questions❤️
Hmm, you know, I don’t think so. It’s clear that they had a very sibling-like relationship during the campaign and early-Bartlet years. It’s not until seasons 3/4 that there was a definite element of sexual tension in their interactions. I think they were barreling toward hooking up by s7, but it didn’t happen because reasons.
I wish we got to see more of them too! They clearly understand each other at a completely different level from everyone else and it’s always so special to see.
grey’s stuff under the cut!
favorite character: Amelia Shepherd!!! She’s been through so much but came out of all of it so much stronger. I love her to bits.
least favorite character: most of the interns Hahn or Stark
favorite ship: Jo/Alex and Amelia/Link
least favorite ship: Cristina/any of the men she was with + Meredith/Deluca
favorite brotp: Cristina & Meredith, Jo & Link. Although Maggie & Amelia and Jo & Jackson are growing on me as well!
favorite season: 9! The aftermath of the plane crash was really interesting + Jo and Alex’s literal Enemies-to-Lovers progression…perfection
least favorite season: 13. That season was a dumpster fire
favorite episode: 11x13-11x14, “Staring at the End” and “The Distance.” I love format-breaking episodes in general, plus we got to see Amelia’s greatness shine through!
least favorite episode: There are quite a few I hated…maybe that one where Meredith steals Cristina’s printer?
most unnecessary death: Heather! I loved her. Think of the Neuro powerhouse Brooks/Edwards/Grey/Shepherd/Shepherd would have made if more than one of them were still at GSMH
most unnecessary exit: Arizona and April
character(s) that deserved better: Arizona and April—see above Jackson—his storyline has been complete trash since April left Alex—he didn’t deserve to have his character growth so utterly demolished like that Bailey—she had amazing leadership skills in the early seasons, but ever since she became Chief, she’s just been making mistake after mistake.
ship(s) that deserved better: Jo and Alex—yeah. Mark/Lexie— they deserved to be happy, dammit Jackson/April—They definitely had potential but both of their character arcs were handled so badly when they were together that it was kind of inevitable that they wouldn’t make it. If only the writers gave these two just a little more thought.
a character I used to like but now don’t: Teddy—I loved her in her earlier seasons, but she’s just been a nuisance since she came back. Not to mention that the whole cheating-thing was wayyy ooc. Owen Hunt—I was a huge Owen/Amelia shipper back in the day, but looking back, this dude does not deserve the happiness he has now. Bailey—see above
a character I used to hate but now don't: Koracick. I feel bad for him, honestly.

Grey's 15x20
** Spoilers ahead **
That was a great episode. It was well balanced with the characters, I loved seeing Megan, and the DeLuca and Richard scenes were fun (and awkward, and adorable). I also liked how we're seeing more of this sibling type bond between Mer and Jackson.
Jo is not okay and I'm super worried but glad they are being realistic about it and not sweeping it under the rug. And seeing Link and Alex band together to support her was nice.
Lots of great little moments in this one!
Major props to Megan for telling Owen what so many fans have been saying forever! He needs to get help. And also kudos to this storyline for representing toxic masculinity, and PTSD and a whole load of other things Owen is dealing with and how it can hurt people and implode relationships. I've been so over his shit and he does need help. And the women he cares for should be free to find their joy.
Turns out Alex delegated Chief tasks to residents and it worked. While I found Bailey and Richard funny in the "Karev did this better. He can never know" schtick, I also feel it's not giving him proper credit and he's come a LONG way so he deserves it! Good leadership (that we are supposed to believe Bailey has?) would be telling him and celebrating his win and learning from him. But it's a show so I'll give it a pass. But I'm proud of Alex even if they aren't.
Bailey had high school students shadowing her and I enjoyed their awe of her even if I don't always agree that she lives up to the pedestal she's on. I'm still always gonna celebrate that she's a strong successful woman who has been through so much and come through it. I just wish there was more consistency with her character.
Um. We got a couple merluca ish scenes. And one at the end was part of a montage! Not okay. Lol. But still cute. And a lot of the merluca tidbits were in conversations with others (Mer and Jackson; Andrew and Richard).
I did perk up about Andrew mentioning how he's conscious of Mer having a family and it colouring her stance. Maybe that is foreshadowing for us seeing him with her kids?? It was mentioned in an interview by Krista (I think) so hopefully it's coming after Amelia's episode!
We're almost at the finale and I'M SCARED. I need them to leave Merluca unscathed. And like always the adjectives they used could skew good or bad for any number of storylines. Yesh. Whatever happens I just want them to come out stronger together.
For those who watched, what did you think!? Any theories of what will happen with Jo? Or Owen?
Sorry this was long & disorganized. I'm pumped for the rest to watch tomorrow. There's always a lull until Thursday night and then it's not as fresh for me when the buzz really starts. After you watch let me know what you thought!

Review of 14x08 “Out of Nowhere”
I FINALLY sat down last night and watched the mid-season finale. I purposely didn’t watch live, but life kept me busy, too, so sorry for the delay.
Before I get in to my thoughts on Grey’s, I want to ask does anyone watch Chicago Med?  I kept reading that Chicago Med did this storyline, so I found the episode to compare how similar they are.  Um…guys.  In no way do I think that Grey’s Anatomy needs to “borrow” ideas from other shows, but the similarities are eyebrow raising.  I have only watched a couple of other episodes of Chicago Med, so I don’t know the characters or their stories well.  I did notice that they have characters named April and Maggie, and that was enough to mess with my head in itself, but the episode had so many similarities, I felt like I was watching an alternate reality Grey’s.  Early in the episode, all of the monitors/tablets/etc. lock out the doctors and then a cryptic message pops up on all of them stating that someone else has control of their network until the hospital pays a certain amount of bitcoin.  Granted, this may be standard hacker lingo, but it made me squint pretty hard at my screen. The wise, older, chief of the hospital gathers everyone to explain the situation, and a doctor asks how they will get things done.  Our wise chief explains that things used to be done back in the day with paper and pen and the distribution of the clipboards begins.  A male doctor who, similar to Jackson, has a trust fund and is in an interracial relationship, chimes in that he thinks they should just pay the ransom.  And while I could explain all of this away with coincidence, there was one scene that was so similar to one on Grey’s that I watched it twice to be sure.  Remember Webber’s newspaper trick for the IV bag with blood in it?  Same thing happens in the Chicago Med episode.  I’m not kidding.  So is all of this coincidence?  I don’t know, but if you have time to watch the Chicago Med episode, let me know what you think.
Alright, let’s get to it.
Unimportant thoughts:
Every time I see the interns, I wonder which ones will be killed off this season.  So far, I am liking Glasses and Sam, and I hope they stay.
Was it intentional that Maggie’s patient had the same name as her Tinder date?
The idea that April and Owen worked in a war zone, but can’t figure out how to be doctors without computers is eye roll worthy.
IT guy Tim is either the hacker or just a genuinely socially awkward person.
Carina and Arizona have chemistry.  Sam and Deluca have chemistry.  I know the showrunners are capable of seeing chemistry.  So, why…nevermind.
Why was that birth scene so anti-climactic?  I wasn’t worried or excited or happy or anything.  It was missing something.  Build-up maybe?
Jesse.  What are you doing, boo?  This man can act.  He emotes every imaginable feeling with Sarah. He had hilarious, genuine scenes with Mark and Ben.  Is he tanking this on purpose or is the lack of chemistry that bad?
Ben/Bailey – This story didn’t get much attention besides Ben’s workout scenes in the opening voiceover, and Bailey telling Webber she was mad he let Ben use the fire academy as a fellowship year.  The only thing I got out of that line being dropped was that if the spin off fails, Jason George has an easy way to come back Grey’s.  Always nice to have a fallback plan, I guess.
Meredith – “You win a Harper Avery, and you barely have any time for surgery anymore.”  Meredith is annoyed at all the attention winning this award is giving her, and I’m annoyed that she’s annoyed.  I just can’t feel sorry for her that people want to praise her too much.  Amelia saying, “Not a real problem,” in response to her complaining was one of my favorite lines of the episode.  Not only because it was like Amelia channeled my inner thoughts, but also because it is another example of how post-tumor Amelia is still exactly the same person as before and the writers have changed nothing about who she is besides her relationship with Owen.
Jolex – I love that Jo is Chief Resident, but like I said before, I don’t feel like I can feel proud of her because she basically got it by default.  We all know if Jerrika had stayed on the show, she would have been Chief Resident, and there would have been multiple scenes of characters explaining to Jo that Stephanie is the better doctor.  That said, I laughed when Jo was telling the interns not to be stupid, slow or make her look bad, to which Webber says that her speech needs work. Jo may never be Bailey, but she has the potential to be a great leader.  I think their story, both the little boy and Paul returning, was the only interesting part of the episode, and the only story worthy of a mid-season finale.
Deluca and Sam – I’m ready for them to give us more than them having sex all over the hospital.  I want to like them, but I need more right now. At least they have chemistry though. If they are going to throw a couple together without any explanation, at least, in this case, they have chemistry.
Awkward elevator scene – This recreation of the Mark/Derek/Mer/Addison/Rose elevator scene with Owen/Carina/Arizona/April made me half-smile, until I realized in the first scenario everyone was involved in the weird relationship mess, but in the second scenario April was only thrown in because she has no other story in this episode, but the show knows she is comedy gold.  Sigh.
Webber/Bailey/Surgical Contest- Looks like Webber is going to be running the contest.  That is unless this ransom thing ruins the contest, which I sincerely hope it doesn’t because it is one of the few storylines in the past season and a half that I have a little hope for.
Maggie/Jackson – Do the writers actually have a plan here?  We have gotten so much conflicting information here that I have to wonder.  One of two plans are being played out, but which one is it?
Plan One – The writers are actually trying to make Maggie and Jackson a thing.
Plan Two – This is all a terribly executed plan that will lead to Jackson and April finding their way back together.
But if we look at what we have to go on, there is no clear direction or answer.  Debbie Allen said recently that this is a love triangle, Krista certainly hasn’t had many positive things to say about Japril online, and Jackson and Maggie have had more scenes together than Bokhee and Meredith. At this point If something is going to happen with Maggie and Jackson, what are they waiting for??  There are only so many chemistry tests they can do.  Especially when they are failing all of them.    And I refuse to believe that the show thinks they see some magic spark that 99% of the fans don’t.  They call them family and siblings, but then have them say vague lines that make us wonder what they are actually talking about.  It’s like the show is trolling the audience.  They know they won’t work as a couple, but people are so against it, they are just trying to get a reaction now.  There is zero chance that they posted a photo of Jackson and Maggie with the caption, “This is creepy,” and didn’t expect a reaction.  Not to mention, none of the actors are promoting this ship.  Jeanine Mason has played Sam for like an hour and she has been online talking ship names with fans.  Jesse and Sarah, aside from a couple of Jesse troll moments, only like and share Japril tweets, while Kelly either ignores it all or likes ambiguous tweets about the story. If the actors don’t even talk about it online because they know there will be backlash, why in the world would the show go forward with it?  And now we have confirmation that Sarah and Jesse are filming together again.  So, was that planned all along?  Was there a shift in the story because they saw it was failing?  Was it meant to fail all along?  Then we have Maggie and April looking for dates on Tinder and Jackson moping about not being able to buy happiness, so he buys everything else.  And hey, while we’re at it, let’s bring in a stunt double for Sarah and bring Matthew back because things aren’t weird enough right now.  And if they are trying to create moments between Maggie and Jackson, why do they keep ruining those same moments? Catherine walking in on them talking and calling Maggie his sister is believable, but the helicopter would have been the perfect opportunity to move this along.  But they didn’t. Instead we got more flat, awkward conversation until the universe literally made them shut-up.  Why is the show getting in the way of these moments unless it is intentional?  Because it sure isn’t creating a slow burn.  I have never seen a non-ship crash and burn as quickly as this one.
So, we’ll hang in there a little longer because that’s how much we love and appreciate Sarah/April and Jesse/Jackson.  Hopefully the second half of the season brings stories they deserve.

Hey everyone!!
This week showed us, not for the first time, that this country is going to hell in a hand basket. There is absolutely no reason that black people and people of color are still being murdered by police. We are saddened by the number of people that still don’t understand the Black Lives Matter movement. If your first instinct at hearing that black lives are just as important as white ones is to argue, you are the problem. We proudly stand with BLM and will continue to uplift the voices of black people in this country and across the globe.
On that note, this isn’t the first list of Black content creators that has ever been made (they’ve been circling the internet since the internet was born) but here are some of our faves:
Our very own P$, Parker, Chef Boyar P. The love of our lives. He is a co-founder of this blog, and his content is *chef’s kiss* superb if we do say so ourselves. Check out any of his reviews like this one or this one or this one

Sam’s Update
Welp, this week was a heaping pile of shit.
What Sam Finished:
A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow: It is not physically possible for me to scream loudly enough about this book. There are so many things I loved about it. It’s powerful. The characters are well rounded. The mystery is juicy. The message is undeniable. The magic is cool AF. And all while reminding us that teenagers have a fuck ton of shit to deal with and their anxiety is real and warranted. Even when you’re not a mermaid. Drunk review coming.
Well Met by Jen DeLuca: This was adorable. I haven’t read a fluffy romance in so long and I fucking deserved it. This is a hate to love at a Ren Faire. COME AT ME.
What Sam is Currently Reading:
We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal: Only barely started this audiobook but I have been excited to read this book since it came out and I was stoked to see my hold come through at the library. I also have a physical copy so we’ll see if I switch back and forth. What I can gather right now is that there’s a woman disguising herself as a man and this other guy is a death god. I really don’t need more.
Queen of the Conquered by Kacen Callender: I’ve had this book for ages but I hadn’t gotten around to it. Then a few things happened, Sam from Thoughts on Tomes review came out and she loved it. And then Kheryn was at Bookconline and I loved what they had to say. And then the world went to shit. The gods were saying “Sam, it’s time” This is an islander fantasy story where our main character, a woman of color serving as a sugar plantation owner. She can read minds. She has this master plan to take down the white man. So I’m in to that.
What Sam put down:
Forged in Fire and Stars by Andrea Roberson: I was pretty excited by the thought of blacksmith magic but I got about 125 pages in and nothing had happened. Ginny reminded me what happened when I read too many mediocre books (a massive slump) so I put it down.
Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb: I will get to this one day, but when you listen to the first 45 minutes of an audiobook that’s over 13 hours long and you can’t remember a thing about what happened… it’s not your time to read it. I’ll get there.
Ginny’s Update
Guys, I don’t have to do Jury Duty right now. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve done jury duty before and I’ll do it again, but there’s a lot going on right now, and, it’s just a relief. Got a lot done this week.
What Ginny Finished:
The Vicar’s Daughter by Josi S. Kilpack: This book was fine. Basic plot, girl falls in love with the guy she’s been writing letters to while pretending to be her sister, b/c the sister needs to be married before girl goes into society. The ending felt a little rushed but I actually really liked the way the sister grew from this book. I felt there were a few different easy outs, and this book didn’t take one of them.
Hex Vet: The Fly Surgery by Sam Davies: this graphic novel was super cute and easy to follow even though it was the second book in a series (and I didn’t read the first). The art was very stylized and a lot of fun, with a fairly cute magical world.
Lumberjanes: The Shape of Friendship by Many People: Again, this was quite cute. I enjoy the way the lumberjanes have a variety of friendships and relationships where everyone interacts with everyone in different ways. The story for this was also fun. I particularly enjoyed Jenn’s story line from all of the history I have with Lumberjanes
Before the Dawn by Beverly Jenkins: Support black authors!! Also Beverly Jenkins is a delight. Leah Barnett marries her mother’s boyfriend on his death bed because he wanted to take care of her. This means that his sons (that she didn’t know about) aren’t thrilled. And yet, chemistry… This book feels oddly timely (a major plotline is local lawyers refusing to take a case from a person “of the race.”) Race always greatly affects the way characters are treated in her books and this book is no different. Leah is a fun character and I kind of enjoyed her occasional pettiness and the thought of “He’s gonna feel really bad about this later for reasons he doesn’t know yet,” when someone’s being a dick.
Big Black: Stand at Attica by Frank “Big Black” Smith and Jared Reinmuth: This is another book where it was just the right time to read it, painful as it is. This book follows an event in a prison in the 1971 when the prisoners rioted due to inhumane conditions. “Big Black” was one of the prisoners who was fighting for some basic rights (rights that are frankly still being fought for today). The story felt a little disjointed and could be a little hard to follow, but the artwork was stark in a way that made the atrocities of the guards so much more poignant.
Hell on Wheels by Julie Ann Walker: I snagged this book at bookcon a bunch of years ago and boy was right now not the right time to read this book. The main characters are all ex-military with too much testosterone and the belief that just being a patriot is enough to make someone a good person. this book did come out in 2012, but I feel like even then the increasing militarization of our police force was an issue. Regardless kindergarten teacher (whose name I have forgotten) is in danger b/c of her dead brother and goes to dead brother’s bf, nicknamed Ghost (yes, it’s that kind of book, sigh) for protection.
What Ginny is Currently Reading:
Strange Exit by Parker Peevyhouse: Sam grabbed this for me at ALA but I think it came out in January… After a catastrophic war on Earth, a bunch of highschoolers were sent into space, but put in a simulation (and possibly cryogenic sleep) in order to… I don’t know, keep their minds healthy? the explanations of the simulation are fairly interesting and there are a few mysteries that seem like they’ll be interesting.
On Hold Again:
The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown: Yeah, another one of these so close to the last one. But hey, that’s how library holds tend to go. I’m liking this one a little better b/c this book deals with “how to live wholeheartedly” which  means accepting your faults and recognizing the good. That’s a little more my speed.
Minda’s Update
It’s definitely been a week. Black lives matter.
What Minda is reading now:
All Adults Here by Emma Straub – A reflection on parenting across three generations “and all the other things that follow us into adulthood, whether we like them to or not.” I’ve liked her books in the past—we’ll see if I’m in the mood for it right now.
What Minda finished:
Riot Baby by Toni Onyebuchi – Two siblings live the black American experience while wrestling with extraordinary power. A great read for the current climate, to say the least. Parker has an on-point review.
The Jewel Thief by Jeannie Mobley – After being accused of stealing King Louie XIV’s diamond, she only has one chance to convince him of her innocence and win back her true love. Really enjoyed this one
Until next time, we main forever drunkenly yours,
Sam, Ginny, and Minda
Weekly Wrap-Up: June 1 – 7, 2020 Hey everyone!! This week showed us, not for the first time, that this country is going to hell in a hand basket.

Andrea DeLuca deserved so much better. He was getting better because he asked for help for his bipolar. He was making progress with his mental health. He was becoming a good person who just wanted to help people. Carina told him that he wasn’t like their father. Killing him off is the same bullshit with Alex leaving Jo for Izzie. It’s just fucking bullshit.

When I asked for a good storyline for Carina, it was a storyline where we would learn about her childhood in Italy, where we would see her becoming a badass OBGYN but definitely NOT LOSING HER BABY BROTHER !!! Fuck you GA & Krista 🤬
