There are many things people expect from one called 'God of Blood'. Always, the first thought is the blood of war, the blood of violence, the blood of the weak shed for the goals of the strong. Ares doesn't think of the blood of battle at all. When he thinks of blood, he envisions the many tied knots of blood bonds and bonds forged in the blood of battle. Blood sons and blood daughters, blood brothers and battle sisters, blood oaths and blood vengeance - he watches over them all and keeps close each one of these bonds.

One cannot begrudge his displeasure then when he realises he cannot tell Leto's offspring apart just by looking at them.

It was easier when it was just Artemis. Dark hair curled about her shoulders, a fierce mien whenever Father summons her to the mountain, a scattering of bones and blood shed whenever she was disturbed; the eldest child of Leto was a wild thing, sharp toothed with sharper claws always at the ready. There's whispers of her being a twin, of her other half being made to crawl on their belly as penance for their sin of god-slaying but Ares pays it little mind. What twins look alike among their number? Even dog litters are born distinct with all their unique markings inlaid in their fur. Artemis' twin too would be much more than their sister's mirror image.

Pouring over his list now, he wishes anything about Phoebus Apollo was that simple.

Mirror image did not begin to describe it. The twins were the same height, the same build, had the same colour and texture hair, ate the same raw food and drank the same amount of nectar. There was no difference in how they dressed, no difference in the company they kept, no variance in the weapons they used. There are some days Ares still cannot believe Phoebus will grow into a man and not some nymph with the way his ears have that slender point. He watches them now, sitting together beneath a shady palm and stringing their bows in an uncanny unison and curses because he still cannot tell them apart. What use is his skill in knowing blood when they both have the same damn blood running through their veins? What bond is there to sense when they are tied so tightly together, Ares can scarcely tell brother from sister?

He sighs. Unadorned and completely alone, the only way to know who is who is to speak to them. He'll have to find more ways to tell them apart from a distance. Surely they cannot stay this similar all the rest of their immortal lives.

i can't wax extensive poetic about it rn but i really enjoy the idea of blu engie being the only original on blu; the only person who knows the truth, at first; who whips the rest of blu into a frenzy when they learn the truth, too, under the guise that he himself is a clone, just like them. their outrage is his own, he tells them. that anger makes every match so much fun, from where he's sitting.

because at the end of the day it doesn't matter; they have a job to do. they're clones—so what?

My birthday was a couple days ago, and I got to see my bio dad for the first time in a while. He surprised me with the fact that I have a little half-sister, whom I've never met and who was adopted about two years back. So, I wondered if any situations in BB mimic this or have a theme of "secret siblings" or "secret family"? Sorry if this is a weird ask; this blog is honestly just such a cool little place and I love the way you approach the subject matter and take the flawed misogynistic foundation of the WC books and make them so much better (JUSTICE FOR BUMBLE!!!). I've also learned a lot about healthy and unhealthy relationships here and am really glad for your deep dives on Squilf and Bramble. Thanks, Bones!

Not weird at all! I really like exploring all the little nooks and crannies of complicated familial dynamics. I think one of the untapped strengths of WC (that the writers seem to be unaware of) is how their MASSIVE cast allows them to present all sorts of unique dynamics. So I like to pick up on it, since they don't.

For secret siblings...

I'm pretty heavily leaning towards Ambermoon being adopted by Wildfur, as a surrogacy. Something feels correct about it. Especially since Icecloud is getting retooled into a post-Battle of the True Eclipse birth, and a major supporting character in AVoS-era stories as a friend of Alderheart.

Thinking about it, I should zoom in and expand this. Maybe have Icecloud, somehow, acquire forbidden knowledge that would invalidate the Queen’s Rights and he (transman) struggles with if he's going to use it to expose his parents as an excuse to help Ambermoon.

(Especially since Ambermoon and Icecloud are basically nothing alike. Amber is independent, bold, and vain. Ice is jessie pinkman big-hearted, disorganized, and deceptively meek if you look past his "chill" demeanor)

But that's wip-- there's also Breezepelt and the Three, who are going to have an actual friendship. In particular I can't unsee Breeze and Lion having a deep one. I know I commit the Cardinal Sin of borderline himbo-ifying Lionblaze in BB, but I can't help it.

Hollyleaf ended up nabbing a bunch of his most violent roles to make her villainous descent smoother narratively, so BB!Lionblaze's story ends up being more focused on Ashfur's abuse, comic relief with cats in other Clans (something that the very serious Jay and Holly have a hard time providing), and the emotional fallout of the big reveal and Bramblestar's turn on them. Breezepelt slots neatly into that.

They were friends. Lionblaze's whole life came down around the reveal, everyone looking at him and his siblings differently, like they're suddenly something terrible. Why can't we find a silver lining, Breezepelt? Why can't we call ourselves brothers if the whole world is going to do it anyway? So much is changing, but THIS doesn't have to, we will take their weapon and turn it to armor, my ally, my friend, my brother.

(and when Breezepelt is lashing out at the three because of the Dark Forest's influence, Lionblaze is there, taking the blows and trying not to give in to the impulse to send him flying with a single paw)

There's also Harespring and Kestrelflight of WindClan and Owlclaw of ShadowClan. All of them are from a single litter between Whitewater and Mudclaw. She was going to raise the three of them alone as ShadowClan cats, but when the sire was smote, Whitewater felt they were cursed.

She was able to give the oldest two to their bio-uncle, Torear, but the weather was so bad that day and the runt was so sickly and small that it surely would have killed him. I don't think Owlclaw ever finds out why his mother always treated him with suspicion, but it did mess him up horribly.

Over in BB!DOTC, Thunder Storm is getting more half-siblings earlier. Clear Sky and Falling Feather had two daughters-- Pale Sky and Tiger Sky.

I want to explore the way that the various stages of Clear Sky's life acted on his kids. How any little curiosity Thunder Storm had about the life he might have had if he wasn't abandoned is crushed by seeing kittens who weren't. How Clear's favoritism of his oldest child set the trio against each other from the start. How this idea of "love" is toxic yet intoxicating.

It feels good to be the golden child. The power it gives you over his sycophants is satisfying. To know you, and you alone, have what someone else craves. Problem is, that's conditional, and it's cruel.

What Thunder Storm learns from his time with his biodad is that Clear Sky is not his father at all. He's taught him exactly what he DOESN'T want to be. There may be similarities-- in temperament, in physical prowess (though BB!Thunder is three-legged, he's still ripped), in taste and senses. But Thunder Storm's father is Shaded Flower.

(BB!Gray Wing died in the first book, rescuing Shaded Flower from being trampled by a horse. Xey're a patron of wisdom, Shaded Moss is taking the role of fatherhood to Thunder)

His sister is Rainswept Flower. His mom is Bright Storm. If there was a bond he could have had with Tiger Sky and Pale Sky, it dies simply and cruelly on the knife they used to cut each other out.

Pale might have wanted to mend it, she was the gentler one. But she dies in the First Battle along with her mother. Tiger Sky is too stubborn to accept any help, should Thunderstar offer it, and Thunderstar isn't in the business of begging for others to like him.

Ming Fan shuddered and pressed his face into Luo Binghe’s shoulder. “Mu-shishu will be here,” Ning Yingying whispered, reaching out to stroke his tangled, bloodied hair. She ached to see him like this.

Luo Binghe’s head was bowed over him and she could see the way his arms tightened around Ming Fan. Everything had changed with Shizun’s death—and the three of them had been left spinning in circles, no longer sure of where they stood with the peak, with each other. Shizun had been what had bound them together—for good or bad—and now he was gone. So she could only imagine what was going through her shidi’s mind, holding someone he had hated and who had hated him in return, and trying to keep him from dying. They were navigating uncharted waters, uncertain of what waited for them.

“Mu-shishu will come.” It sounded less like reassurance and more like a prayer.

my brain has finally found a new source of serotonin via my gender swap gta 5 au and i just love it so much. im not super great at writing or the intricacies of what an au like this would entail, and some things might be a little ooc/too original, but i have a few ideas so far:

- michelle/michael is a lesbian with comphet. in her youth, she slept with a lot of men in an attempt to convince herself she was straight, including while dating andrew/amanda. in fact, she isn't entirely sure that travis/tracey and jackie/jimmy are her husband's.

- michelle and andrew are both still having their affairs, with andrew cheating because michelle cheated first. the first time michelle cheated in los santos, it was with a mechanic, since i've decided to mostly leave the strippers/prostitutes female. andrew caught them and started cheating. however, after the mechanic incident, i could see michelle picking up a prostitute that was offering despite the pair being the same gender. she'd still claim she's straight, but become a regular of this prostitute into the start of the game.

- michelle was a very skilled cheerleader. it was less temperament issues and injuries that led her to quit, and more than there weren't any cheerleading scholarships or careers awaiting her, so she just moved on with her life.

- dennis/denise isn't a "new age feminist" but an "alpha male" type who expects francine/franklin to be the caretaker of the house, instead of running around "trying to be a gangster." he doesn't want her to move out, but also wants her to get a proper job since he doesn't consider her his responsibility, often talking about not even being sure francine is his niece, since i also swapped the parents around. dennis is francine's paternal uncle. her mother dropped her off with her dad shortly after her birth, and her dad passed away from an overdose.

- michelle never picks up hitchhikers, not wanting to risk becoming a victim. francine only helps when they're in immediate danger, like antonio/antonia and thiago/tatiana. on the other hand, trina/trevor picks up any and everyone because they'll never be a greater threat than her.

- in terms of fashion, michelle is probably the most feminine. comphet lesbian who leans pretty hard into gender roles now that she's settled down in los santos. if she were honest with herself, she'd realize she's much more comfortable in androgynous/masculine attire. trina will wear any and anything if it's in the clearance bin. instead of ill-fitting dresses, she runs around in giant ill-fitting suits, but still often wakes up in random places in nothing but her underwear and some boots. francine is the opposite of michelle, leaning hard into masculine attire to maintain an image, when she'd be just as comfortable in more feminine attire. no matter what, she definitely prefers more baggy clothing, saving dresses for easter and christmas

- the gangs are still primarily male, save for the named characters like stretch and slim.

- francine will walk around with ancient natural twists or month old box braids, only redoing them if someone comments on it. at this point, she might just get dreads.

- diane/devin and genevieve/steve are practically the same, except there's a lot more "us girls have to stick together" from diane. it makes sense to me.

earlier today, i had so many thoughts on how a gender swap would work in the gta v universe, but i waited right before bed to try and get them all out. now, i must suffer the consequences :(

might start writing it out, though it's probably just going to be a play-by-play of the game, straight up plagiarism interspersed with a hundred pages of inner monologues because i love an inner monologue. maybe i'll focus on the dynamic between michelle/andrew, francine's feelings about being a gangster, trina's whole deal. idk. it's just something that's been making me really happy, even if these notes are all pretty basic and disjointed.

I've been trying to figure out a dynamic between neve and rye that I find more compelling, because right now there's not much of anything there for me to sink my little teeth into. but I think I've landed on something delicious with the idea that especially after minrathous gets fucked, rye looks at neve and sees myrna -- someone he feels he keeps letting down horribly no matter how hard he tries not to and can't quite achieve the approval of/connection with that he wishes so it's better to just pull away completely and disengage rather than stay in that unshifting shame. neve is (very understandably) measured and distant with him after what happened, and he's flashing back to his student days of myrna gazing at the perpetually hungover heartbroken heap of a person of him on the other side of her desk every time he missed the deadline of a paper or project like '...can we at least both agree that this is. a bit disappointing. especially considering your potential.' (and him all smudged black eyeshadow and numb ruefulness being like 'sure that's a very kind way to put it myrna thank you'.)

aside from the 'if I let him get too deeply into this he'll go the way of brom and it'll be all my fault (again)' element, neve thinks rye is dismissing her and her city/being a bit callous in the same way he was after varric's death (listen. how fucking wild must rook's reaction to losing a beloved mentor seem to the rest of the crew who aren't seeing the blood magic paper doll ghost varric the whole time, especially those who got to see them interact. you WOULD think 'there's something wrong with this guy. putting the job first is one thing just not seeming to react at all is another this is fucking freaky', wouldn't you, especially after seeing the warmth in that dynamic in action beforehand.) perfect storm of two people who grit their teeth and turn inwards in pain deciding that not talking about it is their best bet (NEWSFLASH: IT ISN'T) lmao

(rye spent his last year of watcher training on a mostly joyless bender and then got it together enough to finish the eternal orb project last moment in a fevered near-sleepless week instead of the half a year that was intended. emmrich is both astounded and distressed to hear this.
