The piano is over here
beautiful music starts filling up the room as her fingers delicately fly over the keys, expertly turning the page when she reaches the end. "tsuna tsuna natto!! ikura shouyu!!" the boy seated next to her exclaims eyes wide in wonder.
"that was nothing, here let me teach you something simple" she brushes off his praise, placing his hands on the keyboard herself. "places your fingers here and follow which ones i press down" she instructs before pressing a series of keys.
"shake" he sounds determined as he slowly copies what she just played. nodding she plays the same thing again which he more quickly plays. moving to a different tune he struggles to move quite as gracefully as she does.
"very good! now we'll play a basic song, just keep following me" he blushes slightly at her casual praise not expecting it. he struggles to repeat what she played, pouting heavily. she suddenly gets up, going to stand behind him. she places her hands over his, leaning over his shoulder as she does, hair tickling his bare arm. she plays the same bar again, pressing his fingers into the keys but he can't focus. she smells so good, like lavender and cherries, making his brain fuzzy. "are you listening to me toge?" he shakes his head, snapping out of his daze. turning to look at her he can't help but stare.
"huh?" he intelligently says, mind far far away by now. raising a hand she turns his face back to the keyboard. playing the same bar yet again and toge still cant focus. how can she expect him to learn with her so close to him like this! touching hands, soft hair draped over him, softly humming how the tune is supposed to go. how is he supposed to think about anything but her? he feels his heart fluttering in his chest at her actions unable to move away from her.
"we'll work on this later" her low voice makes him shiver, straight up squeaking when she sneakily presses a peck against his cheek. she's gone before he can even comprehend what had just happened, wishing she had stayed there, close to him, forever.

been thinking about deviantart lately and i cant help but remember during the later years of the site's popularity where people would go out of their way to find what was (in retrospect, very clearly) art made by literal children and shit on it and cyberbully the kid about it. what the fuck was that. even shit that was like, well made was subject to overly critical bullshit about being unrealistic or a mary sue or whatever. its frankly bizarre to me as an adult that anyone ever tolerated this culture or even like, participated in it and -wasn't- a child themselves. or even saw it and didnt feel the need to say "hey what youre doing is really fucking stupid and pathetic"
#labz.txt#though if you ever said that shit youd be accused of whiteknighting#whenever i feel bad about tangentially participating in that shit i have to tell myself i was like 11 and super insecure and mentally unwel#also has to be said even if they were adults that were amateur artists it was still kind of dumb and pathetic#its like picking on the guy who just started learning how to play the piano of course he doesn't even know how to compose symphonies#you should be more supportive and kind...#You should be like a speedrunner. get excited and start showing them the ropes#you never know... this person might be the next guy to invent some really cool tech for improving!!!#poster's pox

Hey y'all! Weird question time, this time music related, specifically for people who play any instruments*: When playing a song**, do you normally memorize the song and then choose what to play from a variety of songs you've memorized how to play, or do you play by sight-reading sheet music? edited to add: my mom always called it sight reading, but apparently sight reading is just reading sheet music for the first time as you play it? I mean, I do that too, but I thought it meant playing any music as you read it, even if you've read it before, as long as you haven't like specifically memorized it *probably besides instruments where you play a chord at a time like guitar or ukulele but I might be limited by my own skill level on those so idk
**not a song you wrote yourself or are improvising, a preexisting piece of music written by someone else
#the person behind the yarn#this question brought to you by 'I thought everybody just sight-reads the sheet music'#I don't know many other musicians irl who did not learn to play music in school#and like in school you learned by memorizing because that's what they wanted you to do#(at least that's what they wanted my friends in band to do?)#but I almost never memorize piano music#guitar and ukulele music yes but piano no#the only piano song I have memorized is Cruella DeVille and that's not on purpose#that's just because the melody line for it is almost like a dance while playing it#in a way I cannot articulate it but my brain learned it as a dance instead of how to play a song#I play piano pretty much entirely by sight reading sheet music and I thought that's what most people did

good days aren't easy to come by
#simblr#ts4 legacy#valentine gen 4#fun fact for context on why i care so much abt him finally choosing to play the piano on his own#but it's gonna get Long so strap in#basically. the guitar he used to have had been with him since he was like...... my god. probably about 15#he bought it at a yard sale for pennies from an older woman#it belonged to her late son originally and it wasn't even . supposed to be a part of the sale in the first place. she just took a liking to#devin and figured that really it's better in the hands of someone who would use it than for it to collect dust in her garage forever#and he couldn't really practice at home. his parents... are not exactly the kindest people you've ever seen#he was too afraid of them destroying or throwing it away so he'd sneak off to god knows where and learn how to play it from old#youtube videos on his busted up phone#it quickly became Everything to him. his most prized possession. and it wasn't a shitty guitar either. the son was a professional musician#that's how ellie and devin met in the first place. he was playing at the market she used to sneak out to in the evenings to#and she instantly knew . this boy is going places and really they might as well go together#enough backstory of the backstory. long story short: he was struggling to make rent eventually and was out of vinyls to pawn off#so he had no choice left. it was either that or he'd get kicked out along with his sister. who was still struggling a lot w/ addiction#so he sold it. and it broke him. he's literally just not been the same since losing it#his sister stole him a guitar from a music shop she'd go to sometimes but it just wasn't the same and he had not played an instrument since#until now anyway#still not a guitar. but maybe someday#or he can find his old one and buy it again.........#lmfao if you made it here congrats. you win nothing bc im broke but i do respect you

#lego monkie kid#lego monkie kid fanart#monkie kid#monkie kid fanart#lmk#lmk fanart#lmk mayor#monkie kid mayor#blue and violet#you know how what? to the people reading this here is a little silly something:#since the Mayor has abilities to move things without touching them (a story factor coming from LBD canonically being able to do this)-#-this means that once Mayor is experienced enough in playing the erhu they will be able to play it without even touching it#they could just command it to move on its own with their powers/magic#and this is the same for plenty of other instruments! Guitar (so long as they have a pick to strum the strings with) and drums-#-and piano and other string instruments#wind instruments and brass however they probably can't because you need to blow air into them and haha they can't control air#but yeah! basically if this guy learns enough instruments they can form a 'ghost' orchestra/band#they can literally be the conductor and wave their hand around and let the instruments play music#except it would be very difficult and almost impossible because they have to think about what every single instrument is playing#all of the notes one by one and keeping in time/beat#but they could pull it off#it's something I want to write them doing one day

It makes me really sad when I hear people say they could never learn something. It might take longer than most people but I do genuinely think anyone could learn anything.
#i understand that sometimes the juice is not worth the squeeze#you could learn to do ballet and maybe you would never be a master at it and maybe you would hate it but you could#you could decide to get good at math or learn to play piano or how to ride a bike or draw or sing or a new language#you could get really entrenched in an era of history or some form of biology or chemistry#you could! you have an infinite capacity to grow!!#it feels like giving up on yourself and that's sad.

somewhat baffling to ask for a small alarm clock as a gift and receive what appear to be circular knitting needles when i am not a regular knitting person and i have not expressed the desire to become such
#i don't want to be the kind of person to hate on gifts but this one is genuinely ??#only reason i can think of is that yesterday or so my mother told my sister that if she wanted to learn how to knit#she'd have to do it in a specific way for which she'd send her a video#and from a perspective of abstract interest i was like oh send that to me as well. bc i simply wished to See#i feel like this is my mother's attempt to get me to do a hands on hobby again#but i straight up don't have time for this hello. in what universe do you think im going to learn how to knit a jumper#curry rambles#i already want to take up piano lessons again that's more than enough#actually feeling really kind of bad abt it bc i feel pressured to use them and it's already stressing me out#and also receiving a gift that's just. so far removed from any of your interests. is not a great experience

I really like your comic. Out of curiosity, what are your art inspirations?
that's a really good question with a slightly difficult answer because i tend to absorb bits and pieces of any media i like into my art style lol
(this got a little long, so answer under the cut)
if i go far back enough, i think my first real taste of comics as a medium was Cassandra Jean's graphic novel adaptations of Miss Peregrine
(images copied from her announcement of the second book)
looking back on it now, the overall style is loose and sketchy, but still readable (which are not necessarily words i'd use for my own style lmao) but there's the use of value and solid black that i still strive for. the style is also very manga-esque, but i definitely picked up a few things on drawing faces and action from these books
(her more recent style is a lot cleaner and a lot more graphically complex, but there's still an emphasis on interesting, readable shapes)
there's also Peter Nevins, who did the original cover for the Hadestown concept album (and the cover for the NYTW recording? correct me if i'm wrong). he also did a few covers for Anaïs Mitchell's other works
(i actually drew a piece based on that second cover a few years ago)
he primarily works in linocut prints, which is a medium that kinda forces you to think in terms of value. while i mostly use the stuff he's done for Anaïs Mitchell as an example, i'm also fond of the original work on his shop
over the years though, Drawfee has probably been the most consistent source of inspiration? it feels a little weird to call them that, especially considering the fact most people know them as a comedy show, but i've been using their speed draw videos as background noise for ages now
i'm really fond of the atmosphere that they've created with their channel, and it's been so fun watching and growing in art skill alongside them (and sometimes having my vocab for the week be utterly destroyed by one of their bits)
there's definitely way more people i could name (CanisAlbus and asmeesh here on tumblr) and a huge pile of webcomic artists (Tracy Butler, Meg Syverud, Sarah Webb, Petra Nordlund—there's so many) but this post is already unreadable so i'll stop there lol
thank you for the ask, and thanks for reading Outsiders :D!!
#piano sounds#searching my mind palace for a good answer to this question lmao#i've taken little bits and pieces from the styles of a lot of artists over the years#(not even mentioning my friends. which. hi. i'm eating your art always <3)#but i always think it's good to learn from artists you look up to#see how their process works and what parts of their style you think work for you#even just to test yourself a little bit and try something new

Okay so I’m going off anon for this because I’m sure everyone knows who I am…I mean who else on here is an absolutely massive BH fan AND openly plays the baritone…
the first key concept of any brass instrument is ‘buzzing’. It’s kinda stupid sounding to explain, but the instruments won’t make any real sound if you don’t do it. You basically have to purse your lips a bit…or a lot if it’s a high note, and just kind of blow, and as the same suggests, the goal is for your lips to well…buzz? I hope that made sense because I’m not that great at explaining stuff.
Huh... Buzzing.
I do that all the time, but I've recently stopped since... well... I think people find it annoying.
Maybe... I could play a brass instrument?
Actually. No... I can't.
...But it's interesting! I'll tell it to my friends, in case they ever want to play a brass instrument.
#ooc: LOL I KNEW IT WAS YOU (massive?? bh reference supermassive black hole??)#black hole bfdi#black hole tpot#ask#ask blog#rp blog#ooc: yuor so cool you know how to play an instrument🔥🔥im learning how to play a piano (but im slacking off)

I want to write and play music with every fiber of my being but its like. In order to do what I want to do, I gotta learn to sing, play an instrument, mix and edit in a DAW, and write lyrics etc from the ground up and its just ooooh myyy gooood.
I know the journey is just as important as the destination, and it takes most artists years to make anything they deem acceptable, but I wish I had at least one of those aformentioned skills beforehand when starting because I am daunted learning how to do any of those things to the point where I'm always struggling over balancing which skill I want to learn and end just up Not Doing Anything. I never feel comfortable even STARTING to do fun things badly :(
#i know you dont have to be skilled to EARN to do something or have ideas worth sharing. I know#in fact doing something badly is the fastest way TO learn#but still I've just been pingponging between skills without anything to show for it#do I want to learn stylophone or the midi controller or the toy piano or how to sample or how to make drum patterns or sing or write or.#and its frustrating because I know I would enjoy this a lot if i could just take it easy.#the ambition is there but theres ZERO skill or focus to guide me.#music learning

tbh i think if youre weird and annoying about accordion you owe every accordion player on earth 5000$
you dont have to like the sound persay. not every person likes the sound of every instrument. i know ive got instruments i dont typically like the sound of- and accordions can be loud irl and i sympathize with how that can be hard. but the type of person whos so outwardly dismissive of accordion and treats it like a joke is probably the most obnoxious type of person out there and im so serious about this
accordions are really heavy (they weigh around 20lbs average, some heavier, some lighter) and it takes a lot of very specific upper body strength to push/pull, not to mention how you need to do this while holding them very specifically in order to actually play. now depending on the type of accordion you either need to 1) have preexisting knowledge of piano 2) learn a piano keyboard to play or 3) learn 2 different sets of buttons that look pretty much exactly the same but Sure Dont Sound It!
its also really varied. most people think either stereotypical french/russian music or polka when they think of accordion, and i know why, but its a really varied instrument with a wide range of tone and can be used to effectively convey a lot of emotions musically
treating people like they are inherently jokes because they play an instrument you either dont like or just find funny makes you an asshole hope that helps!
#silver tongues#i have a bias because i am an accordion player who has had a deep love for accordion for most of my life#however. i also think that if someones telling you about how theyve dedicated themselves to an instrument- no matter the instrument but#ESPECIALLY one like accordion which is amongst the most difficult instruments to learn- you shouldnt be a dick about it and laugh at them#dont treat the skills and passions people hone over years as “haha funny meme instrument weird al!!!” I'll Get You.#i ALSO find this kind of person tends to also be someone who both cannot play an instrument in any capacity and knows very little about the#theory and skill involved in music. so its like cool youre stupid AND dont know what youre talking about#some of u ppl need to learn that music isnt just guitars piano and orchestral works from the 1600s. nothing wrong with either of those#(i was in orchestra and play both guitar and piano)#but other instruments exist. be normal <3#“is this something that actually happens a lot-” yes.#ive literally had a THERAPIST jab at me for being an accordion player
