The lack of villainous hierarchy is one of the things that will persistently drive me up the fucking wall, you are a super hero show, and you do not have a classic rogue gallery? A compelling rogue gallery that intentionally compares, contrasts the hero in an interesting light? Again, see: batman rogue gallery being iconic. It solves the problem of Mark's shaky morality ambiguity, and just fleshes him + new!Guardians if they fought those kind of battles together. It can truly flesh out the fucking world. What impact do heroes, and thus villains, have on society? Can we see Mark interacting with civilians? Earning their trust back, or even their hostility? I feel like Powerplex is such a fucking breath of fresh air 'cause they finally doing classic hero stuff, and there's a PERSONAL villain that can say something about Mark and the world. Like why didn't we do this from the GET GO????

OMFG THE ORDER'S EXES? She absolutely fits into the world domination group lmao. AND I'M CRYING, her pondering the ethics of outright using tips she got from exes to help Mark would be EVERYTHING TO MEEEEE. He's inexperienced, being punched in the face with the REAL dangers! Plus, it drives me even crazier because, AGAIN, the peak Nolan vs Mark one-sided smack down, Mark got beat the fuck up but he won. He didn't give into Nolan's rhetoric, Nolan stopped, he realized he DID care. Nolan killed millions with ease but he lost. Mark had a point, and a heart, and I fucking love the "loser" and "winner" of the fight look like that. SO Y'ALL KNOW HOW TO MAKE MARK WIN A FIGHT WHILE STILL LOSING, in some important sense! Again with old man earthquake! Have Mark win the battle with monsters, but put trapped team mates at risk by being to aggressive or reckless and someone gets hurt.

Also again pertaining to the new episode, it drives me up the wall if they shuffled how they set up the season, we could've had a trained, more vicious Mark being violent towards MONSTERS/BEASTS, justifying Cecil's concerns! All the while Mark doesn't see it as murder because they can't talk/not people, THEN, have the whole dragon guy (looks like a beast, but is a person), and again, let Mark win that one! But have him realize later he killed a PERSON, not an entity or creature. Cecil could've avoided telling him until the Big Confrontation, if they pushed that back, and Mark could've had to wrestle with the idea he's killed two people, and one without even noticing/fully realizing. It adds to the drama, it shakes up his notion of murder. Let him have a breakdown even.

This show drives me insane. They had the pieces... they had then.. JUST PUT IT TOGETHER.

Anyways, back to Debbie. Truly let her be fucking selfish? Why should she feel so obligated to higher standards when Nolan went off the fucking fails and just avoided any consequences for the damages? He hurt her, again and again. He hurt their son. Cecil’s number one intern—only intern—curtesy of nepotism, ha! There is something tickling me about Mark taking the Robin Route/Role for the Teen Team in terms of having no powers, just insane skills, BUT there’s something way more delicious about intern Mark when s1e01 happens and Mark tries snooping around to find out the truth about what happened to his Dad.

I wonder if, with Mark having a whole another father, if they’re more or less distant relationship, depending on WHEN Nolan entered Mark’s life? Like if Debbie met Nolan later for this, or just for fun, they dated once, separated (Mark being born during then), then they happened to stumble into each others lives again and Mark’s already been born, anywhere from tween to teenager so there’s a gap in how close they are. I feel like one important aspect of the whole Family Drama is how close they’re supposed to be, a functional, loving family turned upside down? So I wonder what more distance does. I wonder how Nolan copes when his family is entirely human and he can’t project onto Mark.

I NEEED to go back to making art that makes it ABUNDANTLY clear that theres something wrong with my brain BUT NOT in a cool or stylishly interesting way. i need to do it in a way that makes people say "hm." and walk away

Ugh this is so hard to deal with tbh.

My first instinct is:

If you intentionally do something that you know or suspect is agadir the rules, you are cheating. But in my view (and tbh with my main experience of adjudication rulings which is as a yugioh judge) intentionality is a very important factor when you decide what is cheating and what is not.

So here I would describe a few categories of people:

A) people intentionally gaining advantages by picking weaker opponents and using their skill at rps to get a very high success rate. They are aware that the rps is meant to be random and are abusing the fact it is not intentionally. Cheaters.

B) people not picking weaker opponents intentionally, but still using rps strategies intentionally to improve their odds despite knowing it is not intended. Harder to say, but still cheating imo.

C) People good at rps that do not understand that it is meant to be an rng replacement, who use the tactics - maybe even choose opponents tactically sometimes, tho that puts them much closer to the first category - to gain an advantage. Not cheaters (intent is missing, imo), but people making mistakes.

So, the issue with this all is that it's very hard to tell who falls in what category sometimes, and that in the end, a lot of this has the same effect, and please don't ask me how I would handle it if I was running the hypothetical larp. In general I'd hope people would want to have fun and get along and anyone willing to cheat in a larp likely needs some long talks about why they want to fuck others over or cheat others in a fun activity so badly. But these are the archetypes of cheating/noncheating I would think of here.

Idk, with any rules - be it games, social groups etc - intention is always the most important part for me. You know the people that sometimes come into forums or discord or chat servers and don't technically break any rules, but clearly try to get as close as they possibly can to provoke others to do it in annoyance? I always took great care to ban those kinds of postpone immediately when I modded social spaces, and I take a similar approach when adjudicating games - if you make an honest mistake, that is fine. If you keep trying to get scummy advantages, even if you are not technically breaking the rules, you might get a few chances and then get kicked out of you don't improve. It really is all about the intention.

debate time: a larp has been designed using rock-paper-scissors as a resolution mechanic, because the designers thought it was entirely chance-based. It isn't, it's skill based, and some participants are much easier to beat than others.

Is playing rock-paper-scissors to win, rather than randomly selecting, cheating? Is picking your opponents to get matchups you think you can win cheating?

After much internal debating, he decided to ask Mitsuri for help

She made sure to answer any questions you might have to the best of her ability and made you get plenty of rest

While you’re in the bath, she cleans your sheets and gets you all the supplies you need

After the bath, she shows you how to use sanitary cloths and explains everything to the best of her ability and answers the questions you have

Afterwards, she makes sure to have you eat something and rest

Rengoku Kyojuro:

Oh boy, he’s perhaps one of the worst when it comes to this, though not intentionally

When he sees you curled up on the floor, he immediately asks what’s wrong and is frozen when you tell him

Yes he knows about these things but he has no experience with it, but his father might

So he goes to ask his father who begrudgingly gave him advice after listening to his oldest son go on and on until he realized his son might not shut up unless he helped

Kyojuro followed his father’s advice by having you take a hot bath and preparing a meal with Senjuro’s help

Afterwards, he had notified Mitsuri and she helped him with explaining to you what’s happening and how to properly handle it

Kyojuro listened intently to every word Mitsuri said as he wanted to be a good mentor to you and he wanted to understand as much as he could about monthly cycles and how they might affect you

Tengen Uzui:

Well, he supposes this was bound to happen eventually

Luckily he has three wives so he’s no stranger to periods and isn’t shy about talking about it

Honestly one of the best when it comes to this

He makes sure that if you’ve bled through your clothes, to make sure you don’t notice since he doesn’t think periods are anything to be ashamed or embarrassed about

He immediately sends you into the bathroom to wash yourself and take a nice long hot bath

He cleans your clothes of any blood if there is any while his wives prepare food and tea for you that will help with the pain and be easy to eat

His wives show you how to properly wear protective cloth and they answer any questions you have

Gyomei Himejima:

With age comes wisdom, he’s raised children before and although he may have never had to help any of the female children through this, he knows the basics

When he hears your quiet pained whimpers he understands that something is wrong and asks you what it is that ails you

When you tell him, he understands and asks if you understand or know what’s happening. Whether or not you understand, he first helps you to the bath and has you wash up while he either asks Lady Amane for assistance or a female Kakushi or Shinobu

Once your cleaned up, the female he asks for assistance helps you and shows you how to wear sanitary cloths and explains how to maintain proper hygiene

After they leave, Gyomei sits down with you and answers any questions you may have and gently explains what’s happening to your body

He listens to you and allows you to tell him however you’re feeling and insists that you let him know whenever something is bothering you

Giyuu Tomioka:

He had an older sister so he knows a little bit about this stuff but he knows he’s no expert

When he sees you laying on the floor all curled up holding your abdomen he assumes you might have a stomach bug and calls for Shinobu

When she arrives, she initially berates him for what she assumed was a stomach bug like he told her and says he should be able to handle things like this on his own

She later retracts her statement but doesn’t tell him that when she learns what’s actually happening

She helps you out and teaches you how to care for yourself and how to maintain proper hygiene all while having Giyuu make you food and tea

After he learns what’s happening after Shinobu leaves, he stands around outside your door trying to figure out how to tell you that you can rely on him

He ends up chickening out and just listens for you if you need anything and gets it for you

Muichiro Tokito:

Poor boy has no idea what is happening and just assumes you’re being lazy or that you might be sick

No one ever taught him about sex and how the reproductive system works for both genders so he has no clue

Seeing as he is clueless he calls for Shinobu when he sees the blood on the sheets thinking that you’re bleeding internally

When she arrives, she sits both you and Muichiro down and explains in detail what’s happening and how to go about taking care of yourself

She explains how things work and what to do as well as helpful tips and tricks

Girth wise, he’s about normal. Not too intimidating but def offers you a good stretch, forgoing prep is real bold tbh

My king. He may be “smallest” among the Hashira men, but that doesn’t mean shit.

He’s not self conscious of his dick, he knows how to use it. He’s also pretty content with it’s size

Hey actually now that I'm talking about the Hush Jason retcon: I feel like it’s a kinda divisive (maybe??) one but honestly I really do love it, because the actual contents of the Batman combined with the stuff implied in that batman annual/lost days results in just the most balls to the wall miscommunication scenario known to man. And not in a bad way! In the best way! Both Bruce and Jason have absolutely valid (to them) reasons for acting the way they do and said reasons grate on each other perfectly to create just the perfect storm of nobody being happy. It's honestly amazing.

As of the retcon, Jason shows up in a graveyard acting as a miraculous fake apparition version of himself, intentionally flinging around the most hurtful cutting accusations of abandonment that he doesn't even believe (for the most part) specifically because he wants to taunt Bruce into giving him a reaction. To him, if Bruce visibly reacts pretty much at all to the fake acted-out Jason who died blaming him and feeling abandoned, the Jason he'd be most likely to get emotional over, that means that some, just any, part of Bruce is sad about it all, and misses him and valued their time together, or even feels just a tiny shred of Bad about how it all went down, and the fact that Jason went through the effort of staging all this indicates that it meant enough to him to search out confirmation of Bruce's... not even grief like he's aiming for just slight regard for what happened! that said confirmation very likely could have changed things! And as of Hush proper, Bruce doesn't give him an INCH of reaction because he was so sure in every moment that this was obviously an imposter, and he was sure of this because he "knows" that Jason (who is actually putting him through a trial of "does he actually love me" in the present moment) would NEVER doubt that Bruce loves him, and the idea of someone puppeting his beloved son's memory around just infuriates him (said puppeteer is Jason himself,) so there's no reason to be sad or say anything loving to his son's ghost or emote because all it would do is give this sick and cruel villain satisfaction after going for low hanging fruit (totally not because he's repressing his trauma.) So Jason leaves this whole mess having definitively proved to himself that he never meant anything to Bruce and ready to carry out Under the Hood, Bruce walks away completely secure in the idea that Jason ALWAYS felt EXTREMELY loved and cared for with him, having stoically acted properly in the face of that dirty trick and primed for some quality brooding monologues, and neither of them ever figures out what went down!

On TAZ-

Wow that sounds like I’m about to summarize some sort of discourse but I promise I’m not. I guess I’ll say that I really like this show and I will keep listening even if my worst fears come to pass, so keep that in mind!

For reference, I started listening near the end of Amnesty.

I’ve noticed, with the past few arcs- really since Ethersea- the narratives have just… not been fulfilling their promises, so to speak. They’ve been placing a lot of guns that don’t go off. What I mean by that is, the characters are great. Excellent, really. Lady Godwin? HELL YES. Emerich Dreadway? Fuck yeah! And so on! And the settings and premises have been epic- the goofiness and also horrifying nature of Engrave, the mad and thrilling world of Steeplechase- these things are COOL AS FUCK.

and then the actual narratives keep flopping?

And honestly, I notice it most in the endings, because you can really tell when an ending doesn’t land. You feel the sense of disappointment. But with vs. Dracula, for example, I could kinda see leading up to it that the ending couldn’t really BE anything special, because they lowkey didn’t set themselves up for it.

They spent the campaign fucking around in Engrave, finding clues and solving problems and not really experiencing any particularly meaningful character arcs or growth or, idk, forming relationships? So there wasn’t much to pay off, I’m not gonna lie!

Of course it doesn’t feel quite as dissatisfying when you’re in the thick of it, because they’re funny and the stuff is cool and- oh hey! Lady Godwin’s been turned into a werehorse against her will?? that’s got some real potential for a LOT of allegories and exploration of some fun character development! And then it’s kinda played as a joke. And then they do that again and again.

And they actually said that that was a move they made intentionally, in the TTAZZ. I’m not quoting them perfectly here, this is from memory, but I do remember them mentioning that they wanted lighthearted comedy without the burden of real life story stuff. And I get that, honestly, but… it’s not the choice I would’ve made. I do think you can keep a lighthearted tone while also, idk, forming relationships and wholesomely engaging with some amount of emotion. And sometimes going way too deep is funny as a tone shift!

But I digress. One thing that’s also popped out to me is the almost complete lack of any kind of romantic storyline or even references. This becomes obvious if you’re in a fandom because everyone is always dying to ship SOMEONE, and you can tell when people are really getting desperate. I don’t blame them for not wanting to roleplay romance with their family, and I do think stories lacking romance are COOL and SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED!

However if you can’t find ANYBODY to ship together… that may mean you just don’t have character bonds. The growing popularity of the PC polycule is interesting to me; I wonder if it’s partially because

a) none of the pcs have significant relationships outside of their party and

b) even within the party, there doesn’t seem to be much chemistry between any given pair of characters…? I hope I’m making my point well here- the PCs all seem equally close and have more or less the same relationship to all of their compatriots with little distinction, meaning, essentially, no shipping fodder that doesn’t involve just all of ‘em.

Either way, it makes me wonder if I can blame the “Graduation has too many NPCs!” critique. They really stopped giving the parties tag-along main NPCs after graduation, with the exception of maybe.. Urchin? Kodira? Shlabethany? Poppy? and even they get relatively little “screen” time. Steeplechase has great NPCs, I love them to death, but none of the PCs seem to ever have one on one conversations with NPCs or each other that do not explicitly focus on the plot. And I think that’s part of why the characters feel so underdeveloped despite having spent a lot of time with them- because in this character-driven genre, we get very little insight into their feelings or motivations or even their rudimentary backstories.

I started watching Fantasy High recently and it made me realize a couple things about TAZ.

1) Recently, TAZ has sooo few core NPCs, and it’s weird that the characters aren’t doing more one-on-one purely character based scenes. And that makes it really tough to develop them.

2) TAZ is- and I should have realized this before- one of many good dnd podcasts. They’re probably looking for a niche they can master.

And it sounds like they’re trying to get back to that old “Here there be Gerblins!” energy. They’ve referenced it so many times in recent TTAZZes- they wanted to be job-focused, allowing story stuff to happen organically, so they tried a more open world vibe with Ethersea. They wanted to be less afraid to kill stuff, so they tried playing criminals (and were still afraid to kill stuff). They wanted to be silly and light on character, as they tackled with taz vs dracula. Now they’re trying to bring in the silly cartoon vibe with Abnimals. I think they’re trying to make that family-friendly, funny and goofy show their niche. Something other actual plays can’t be better at them at.

And honestly it kinda makes me sad, that they keep trying to go back to Balance while ignoring everything they learned during it. Because I loved Dust. Because I loved Amnesty. Because I loved Ethersea. I loved these past arcs! But they keep doing their brilliant characters dirty for some reason!!! And i don’t know why!!!!

You know that meme about people who ask questions in movies and then the person responds “Have you ever been to a movie before? You watch them and the information is revealed.” There have been so many times in TAZ recently where information has Not been revealed and if they keep doing it the audience will stop bothering to suspend their disbelief, because the trust just isn’t there.

What is Montrose’s deal? What on earth was Carmine Denton’s whole thing? Tell me more about Zoox’s feelings, about Devo’s past, about Amber’s future. Show me how Lady Godwin feels about the body horror that is her life- like, seriously! WHY DID WE HAVE TO COMPLETELY DISMISS THE OPPORTUNITY TO DISCUSS GENERATIONAL TRAUMA IN MUTT’S LIFE FOR A JOKE??

Do you remember in Steeplechase where the boys were getting medical attention or something- i don’t remember, but they were all in one room and only talking about The Plot. And Poppy literally banged on the door (speaking for both Justin and me, tbh) and was like “does anyone want to share any feeeeelings??” and they were like NOPE! and they moved on!!

like. cmon. you can’t just put a character like montrose out there and then leave them severely underdeveloped to the point that what would be interesting in proper context, with audience insight, becomes confusing and chaotic.

I just wish they would take their stories as seriously as we do.

It feels to me like they don’t believe in themselves, and it makes me sad. Maybe they didn’t get the response they wanted from Ethersea and so they’ve been trying to pivot, hoping to recapture whatever it was that earned them a loyal audience.

Again, I love them. They’re so funny and I’ll keep listening until the day they stop making this show, and when it happens I’ll cry.

But i KNOW they have more in them. Remember the “we’ll grow gills” monologue from Justin in the Prologues? Remember Travis’s SOLID acting with Devo? Or his awesome choice to give Lyndon/Beef a clearly delineated work/irl identity? His excellent narration and prose? Remember when Montrose described being lonely?! Remember all those moments where Shit Got Real and you cared??? The nanofather said some dope shit! dracula and victor and sweater dracula had such a wild dynamic! Clint’s acting in Dust 2- I can’t remember the characters name right now- was ASTOUNDING, I genuinely didn’t know he had that in him and it blew me away!

I’m not referencing Balance on purpose, both because the fandom is way to hung up on it and because I want to prove that you don’t even have to look at Balance, or even Post-Balance arcs, to see this kind of good cool stuff!

What’s the dynamic when Doey, Lucas, and Bella are together?

GRINNING SO BIG BACK AT YOU!!! I have so much I am so sorry here, have a doodle before I throw you into the read more:

Their dynamic is very much like siblings. There is definitely a reason they usually only use one at a time as being in a group together emboldens all three of them. It is hard to fully describe the change, but when they are all together you can actually tell they are kids, they act like kids. Being put together is generally a reward for particularly good behavior (conditioning always works better if you mix both positive and negative reinforcement, even if they lean negative) and VERY OCCASIONALLY they are allowed things like crayons or books. Lucas has self proclaimed himself the older brother of their squad which he takes very seriously, which really doesn't mean very much besides the fact he is very loud, loves to "older sibling" brag (make stuff up haha), and thinks he is really funny. He is the one that gets the energy going in a room, and if there is a tussle it's probably his fault. Bella is a very obvious contrast to that, she is quiet and would much rather go with the flow of whatever is happening than take charge like Lucas. However, I think she is hiding a sneaky side under there that doesn't come out very often, but if given the chance to grow up normally she would probably enjoy pranks and get away with them. She likes to draw and she likes listening to stories. She's much stronger than she looks, Lucas knows this first hand (if Doey was in a normal situation/environment he would probably know her "wrath" too.) Doey has the most noticeable shift, and it would be even more if he wasn't in his current circumstances. (I wrote a ton a ton here but I think I'll save it for a second post). It's kinda hard to explain? Big ole' "it depends" I suppose? Sometimes he is more in-line with Lucas, more mischievous and playful, liberally using his abilities to make up for their lack of playthings. Sometimes it is more like a contented air where he will just sit and listen while the other two do their own thing, but he'll still be an active part of conversation. They talk a lot, all three of them, there aren't many occasions where they can talk and feel listened to. Even Bella who is more quiet. It's the only opportunity for play they ever get, unlike some of the experiments in other sections of the building. Obviously if things are not great(tm) for one of them the energy mellows out more, but even if it isn't acknowledged they treat these opportunities like it will be the last time it ever happens. I don't even know if I answered the question right at this point T-T I have been typing and retyping this for hours at this point. It's like, I know it but I don't know how to say it. They act like siblings, sibling who are keenly aware they are all each other has, while still being themselves as much as they can while they have the chance. Being able to all be together without having to worry if anyone is alright genuinely is a reward for them, and it just makes punishments more effective. I think they used to be more reserved, especially Doey who is very keenly aware of being observed like 24/7, but it wasn't worth caring about, they didn't have that luxury. It probably freaked the hell out of several scientists observing him who are generally more used to "Perpetual glower", or "intentionally trying to push your buttons", and on good days "quiet compliance". He got along with critters in places like the courtyard, but he was generally avoided by other toys because he is massive and scary looking, when he walks the ground literally shakes in game. It would be worth looking into more to find a less volatile way to control him, if he wasn't considered such a liability and didn't already have a body count pre-HOJ Man I hope this doesn't suck to read TwT sorry for the messy word vomit here!!

theo going from exploiting liams anger issues to being one of the only ones that doesnt judge him for said anger issues and actually helps him calm down and control himself? theo going from intentionally poking liam where it hurts to the show implying that theo is liams anchor?

im losing my mind over this like what do you MEAN... "that's cute, liam. is that what they told you in anger management?" "there he is, thats the IED i remember." "great, you gave super powers to a walking time bomb!" "whats gonna take it for you to explode, liam?" and thats his supposed friends talking to him???

meanwhile theo doesnt ever comment negatively on liams anger, he literally just helps him control himself again. and like yeah stiles wasnt liams friend quite yet when he made that comment and bretts and liams relationship is.. complicated but yk? so is theos and liams relationship. like theo did way worse stuff to liam than brett and he still never was an asshole about liams IED... idk just. i think about this a lot.

especially with the theo and liam both thinking of themselves as monsters thing.. like they can see each others darkness. obviously they have different issues and everything, they have like, control issues in opposite directions (liam struggling to control himself & his emotions/anger, theo always wanting to be in control of everything & everyone and not willing to let go of control) but i still think that when they look at each other they can kinda see a kindred spirit. especially when you take into consideration when liam said that he thought he WANTED to hurt scott. like yeah that was just theos manipulation but you cant tell me he hasnt had that thought before.

theo would be so good for him bc he takes it in stride & hes liams anchor anyway so he automatically helps. and liam could help theo learn how to relax.
