hi friends! :D y'all voted and fought neck and neck for this SO- heres the first entry into our little cooking journey of J. R. R. Tolkeins fictional food for his fictional little guys he puts in fictional turmoils for our enjoyment and awe!

 Before we get started i wanna say i owe my heart to all the LotR fans who upkeep the wiki, debate the cannon, and create their own versions of the foods mentioned. Both because of my love for people who LOVE (passionate people)(passion about anything) and because my own knowledge of this series is a little dusty. I've never seen the movies but I did read the books growing up. I'll be learning and remembering things from a fairly newbie standpoint, so no worries if you yourself arent familiar with the series! (and if you are familiar, hopefully youll forgive me!)

We will be making Lembas ('waybread') today! If you've made your own version of this please feel free to share it, similarly if you have any ideas for what we make next!

SO, “what goes in to Lembas?” YOU MIGHT ASKWell so the funny thing is we kinda dont know. At least not entirely? The elves are dicks like that. But heres what we'll be using in ours-

Self-rising flour

Granulated Sugar

Raisins

A small dried fruit of your choosing

Almonds OR Pecans

EGG

Whole Milk

Heavy Cream

And if you would like for dipping-

To the extent i understand this is kinda like hardtack from the bri'ish military, but a fantastical version of it that actually tastes really good. Hardtack was a military provision with the texture of a brick that took a long time to spoil and could be easily carried with soldiers. So the texture we're going for is super dense, packed full with nuts and fruits (haha just lik-), but perhaps not that dense. We want something closer to a dog biscuit than actual tack.

I remembered something about corn being mentioned, thankfully the wiki clarified that no actually the british just referred to any grain as corn back in the day. Thank Fuck! Although I would like to try a version of this using masa in the future.

AND, “what does Lembas taste like?” YOU MIGHT ASK

Took a few tries but eventually got it perfectly chewy and dense

The raisins cook-in like little beads of flavortown sweetness

Cant speak for other fruits but for dried apple it softened up nicely, kinda matching the raisins in the end

Im a big pecan slut, pecans fuck on anything especially here. Crumble them on top after you coat the dough with the egg-mixture for some visual appeal

Somewhat flakey outside

The jam was my idea, it was nice but might be too sweet for some tastes

Would pair very well with a kiwi flavored drink

I can see why this would a travelling provision. Its both sugary (a good thing when expending energy) and filling (also a good thing when youre travelling) while not being overwhelming with flavor (if youre prone to motion sickness. Horse sickness? Do get motion sickness on horses?)

Its like how if you're going hiking you want a good mix of sugars and salts, to balance your intake of water.

. If you wanna make it like the illustrations or the movie, use a cookie cutter for either triangles or squares . If you don't have a cookie cutter, an apple cutter also works ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . try to keep the board you'll roll the dough out onto chilled before you use it, it seems better for the texture of the food though i dont entirely know why

So from beginning to end, it took about an hour and half for the first attempt. Down to about 40 minutes for the second attempt. These are a real simple recipe because its not like a croissant where the margin for error is nonexistent. Middle-earth be damned my boy can work a grill.

I'd recommend storing in a tubberware container, but if you're deadset on using leaves please rinse and dry them first, and wrap the bread in either wax paper or saran wrap underneath. We dont have mallorn leaves in real life (as far as we know) but most salad greens should work, or as Marie Porter says (linked in the reblogs!) a banana leaf.

I really enjoyed the process of making this recipe, itd be really easy to batch-bake these en masse, and the process of eating said recipe. Like all jokes aside, i think this would be a great substitute for trailmix. Its not going to get smushed and even if it breaks a bit it wont affect the taste. It wont keep you fed for a whole day but pair it with some pickles or a salty snack and yeah itll keep your motor running.

I give this recipe a solid 10/10 (with 1 being food that makes one physically sick and 10 being food that gives one a lust for life again.) Let me know if you think I got something wrong, or if you ran into issues with the recipe. We're off to a strong start, lads!

🐁 ORIGINAL RESIPPY TEXT BELOW 🐁

Ingredients:

6 TBSP butter, chilled

2 cups self-rising flour

1 TBSP granulated sugar

½ cup raisins

½ other dried fruit (strawberry slices, oranges, etc.), chopped

Handful of almonds or pecans, chopped

1 egg, well beaten

½ cup whole milk

4 TBSP heavy cream

Method:

Preheat your oven to 400 f.

Cut the butter into slivers/small pieces. With your hands, combine the butter into the flour in a mixing bowl until the mixture resembles coarse sand.

Chop your dried nuts and dried fruit until it feels right.

Mix in the sugar, raisins, nut, and dried fruit of your choosing

In a seperate bowl, beat the egg until combined, and then mix in the milk until combined. Keep a bit of this mixture to brush the tops of the bread.

Stir while adding the egg/milk mixture and the heavy cream into the flour. Mix just until combined into a soft dough.

Knead the dough until firm on a floured surface.

Roll into a half inch thickness and cut with a square or leaf shaped cookie cutter. (...or in my case, an apple corer).

Place on a lightly greased baking sheet, with about an inch of space between each piece. Brush the tops of the lembas with some of the mixture you saved earlier.

Bake for about 15-20 minutes, or until it turns a soft gold and the inside is chewy.

Extrovert, people person, perfectionist. Ambitious, hard working, focused, passionate, creative, obsessive, energetic. Has a sweet tooth, several scrapbooks full of photos, and a dream to turn her apartment into a houseplant jungle.

Some might call her upbringing privileged, and Inhye can't deny that it's true. She just can't see it that way herself.

Her parents were well off and loved her dearly. That love showed itself in their support of her passions. They financed her entire figure skating career from the age of seven, never discouraging her, only ever wanting her to succeed.

Inhye loved skating. She still does. It was nearly all she knew for half her life. But it became apparent late in her career that she'd hit a ceiling. She pushed herself to breaking point trying to fulfil her dreams and make good on her parents' expectations. And break she did.

There are still rumours to this day about her retirement from the sport. She suffered an injury to her ankle, true, but there were rivalries and drama and endless disappointments. It's safe to say that her parents were not pleased when she turned away from it all.

Broken too, was an unofficial engagement that her parents had planned for her since her early teens. No bad blood was lost between Inhye and her potential husband. Her father, on the other hand, has never forgiven Inhye for her rejection of his dreams for her. Needless to say, she and her parents are cordial at best. That's if they even see each other more than once a year.

Despite her bubbly personality, Inhye has had very few in the way of close friends. There was always something that pulled her away or made her put up walls. She's bitterly sad about it and resolved upon moving out of her parents' place that she'd find people to connect with.

Photography had always been her hobby. Just a fun thing to do to pass the time off the ice. But during her recovery, it became a way to understand the world around her, looking at the same rooms and spaces in a different light. She took to it like a fish to water.

She now owns her own small photography studio in Hongdae a few streets away from Gyeogang named Paraiba Photography. Whilst she does many shoots in the studio, from family portraits to maternity shoots, it's shooting on location at weddings that she really loves. She has over fifty weddings under her portfolio. And yes, though she doesn't tell anyone, she does enjoy the perks of the job - like occasional free cake.

Inhye has a strong dislike of coffee. Ironic since she's living above a coffee shop. But in its place, she could drink fruit blend teas all day. Also, again. There's cake.

Somewhat inspired by talking to florists at the weddings she's attended, Inhye has a growing love for flowers and plants. Apartment 12a is filled with tastefully arranged houseplants of various varieties, which Inhye will proudly admit she has conversations with from time to time.

She'd love nothing more than to own a dog. Alas, her schedule doesn't allow for it. Maybe one day.

Han Seojin

Insomniac, coffee addict, hopeless romantic, serial dater, nerd, writer, drummer, keen cook. Younger brother, fun uncle, devoted son. Quiet, thoughtful, bit of a chaotic mess, but ever the optimist.

Seojin was raided by loving parents alongside his elder sister Seoyoon. The family lived above the samgyetang restaurant that his parents owned and his spare time was often spent helping cook or serve in the restaurant.

He and Seoyoon have a great relationship. They bicker and pretend to dislike each other as most siblings do, but both would do absolutely anything for each other.

Three years ago, Seoyoon discovered her husband was having an affair. She divorced him despite the repercussions she knew it might have, and devoted everything to raising her now five year old daughter Jisoo.

Seojin absolutely adores his niece and will often look after her at his parents or Seoyoon's apartment after school. He calls her Jiji and she she has taken to calling him Uncle Jinjin, much to Seoyoon's dismay and Seojin's delight.

He is, without a doubt, a complete nerd. Especially for fantasy. He's an avid rpg lover, devours the most lengthy of fantasy book series, and even DMed a DnD game for his friends back in uni. If you want him to open up a bit, ask him about his favourite books or video games. Just make sure you have at least half an hour to spare.

Though he tends to be reserved, it isn't through shyness. Seojin is often lost in his own worlds or thoughts, and likes to observe and listen. Some people take his quiet as a sign of rudeness, but it's often the opposite. He'd much rather listen to your story than tell his.

He'd always wanted to be a writer - a fantasy novelist if he was to think romantically. But its a tricky business, and so after failing to publish his first novel after graduating uni with a degree in English Lit, he stumbled into ghostwriting. It suits him well, keeping in the shadows, letting the words do the talking for him. He currently doesn't mind others taking credit for his work, especially when it enables him to write, publish and get paid for stories he loves to write. But he still harbours that naïve dream to one day see his work under his own name.

Seojin's friends claim his love life is cursed. He's been in seven relationships, and all have ended with him being dumped. As a bit of a hopeless romantic, he's found it all quite devastating. But it hasn't made him bitter. Far from it. He's eager to try again.

He moved into a top floor apartment to be the furthest away from Brewed Awakening as possible. As an insomniac, being a lover of coffee doesn't help his situation. Hence the need to lessen temptation. So far, his logic has soundly failed.

He shares his small apartment with his two adopted cats, Myeon and Luna. Both run circles around him, like to write their own paragraphs into his work, and have been trained to go on walks with him through the local neighbourhood. One at a time of course.

I was lied a lot to by my friend, and so I have really big trust issues. I am often overwhelmed and do not act calmly under pressure. My emotions control me more than I control them. It does not take much for me to cry （Ω Д Ω）but I try not to show it. Just so I dont look like Im seeking for attention. Other than that, I am not depressed, I just feel as if I am invisible or just not there sometimes. I often worry about things I said long time ago even if it was not even offending( ´･ω･). we also find a really old piano out when we’re walking one day and he tries to teach himself how to play it to be able to play lullabies for them wah wah wah he fixes the piano up and sands and stains it and hopefully it’ll be in the family forever

we will end up having five kids (I know I know) and he plants a tree for each of them! plum for our oldest son, satsuma for our eldest daughter, apple for our middle daughter, yuzu for our youngest daughter, and pear for our youngest son! they have something that will literally grow and provide for them their entire lives at that point

okay so this calls to attention and extremely important question regarding donna's character: is donna a film buff?

i can't respond to asks with any concise or short answer so buckle up!!!!

we know her as a lover of theatre, and while that doesn't mean she isn't into film, it is common that people are into one more than the other. so when we propose that she would like a really lowkey experimental film, that implies that she knows some deep cuts about film that are never really explored in canon; instead, we know her as a shakespeare lover and broadway girlie.

(however, if someone were to show her maya deren's short film meshes of the afternoon, which is like low-hanging experimental film fruit, it would absolutely change her life LMAO)

i am tempted to say that donna would be into the old hollywood classics and/or films that are more day-in-the-life or depicting the everyday, with some stellar acting performances. what comes to mind is Running On Empty (dir. Sidney Lumet, 1988), Ordinary People (dir. Robert Redford, 1980), or Faces (dir. John Cassavetes, 1968). lowkey donna gives me the vibe that she'd LOVE that movie subgenre that's just white heterosexual couples in miserable marriages screaming at each other for almost two hours.

on the other hand, i love to imagine her getting down with fun movies, rom-comy vibes, like Moonstruck (dir. Norman Jewison, 1987), When Harry Met Sally (dir. Rob Reiner, 1989) The Birdcage (dir. Mike Nichols, 1996) or To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar (dir. Beeban Kidron, 1995). I'd say that When Harry Met Sally is probably one of her favorites of all time - it's romantic, it's witty, it's New York, and it's probably everything she wanted.

now this is even more oddly specific but it must be said that donna probably is obsessed with nicole kidman and would be particularly fixated on everything that nicole did when her career was blowing up in the 90s, because nicole had that amazing red hair!!! im talking Moulin Rouge! (dir. Baz Luhrmann, 2001) and Practical Magic (dir. Griffin Dunne, 1998). donna probably went as nicole's characters for Halloween.

i also want to add that i love the idea of her being into older horror films, like Carrie (dir. Brian De Palma, 1976) as you mentioned, and also the original Exorcist (dir. William Friedkin, 1973). donna being a horror lover feels just strange enough to work really well for her character, but i esp like the idea that she takes to classic horror movies!!!

now this is unrelated to everything i just discussed but she would absolutely LOVE Chicago (dir. Rob Marshall, 2002) starting Renée Zellweger and Catherine Zeta Jones.

we see her engage a little with harvey in his movie quoting but we never get to learn much about her own interest in film, so it all comes down to how much knowledge and passion for it that we think she has and if she values any kind of pretentious cinematic taste in the same way she is a longtime fan of live theatre.

Jin:At the same time, he sees the military as a break from his idol life, but he also want a break from the military lol.A lot of it has got to do with him having to fight his nature.He's naturally a lot more laid back and fun than the circumstances mostly let him be.I think one of his past investments is growing while he isnt there, and the fruits are getting ready for whe he will come back.He is also torn between two options for a choice ( idk what tho).He is feeling out of touch with his purpose while understanding why this had to happen.It is helping him develop another side of himself, and he is learning to balance them.

Yoongi:OK so Yoongi teased me and dared me to do it with no cards.He said he is feeling quite peaceful and content/satisfied rn.It's the phase where the stage euphoria came down but youre not quite into post show blues yet.Just quiet, happy, calm, tranquil.Moving slowly, relaxed.I saw him going down a slow river sitting on a surfboard with his eyes closed.So yeah, nice.

Hobi:He seemed pretty excited to do the reading but the first card that came out was the Tower ??I think he is going through a very transformative phase but he is also really excited for it. A sense of oh finally.A lot of his fears and deep anxieties are coming down, he is cutting through them with a new sense of rationality and outspokenness(?) He is becoming less afraid of telling his truth and is not letting himself being held back and literally tied down by how other people see him.He is very strssed tho, and is using good old breathing techniques to relax. (Which kinda makes sense bc i feel like since the military his energy has been mostly quiet except for random burst of really wanting to talk, so i guess it is linked to his stress levels ?)

Jimin:I think he might have asked someone out recently and it went very well ?WHAT- PARK JIMIN GO BACK WITH YOUR 18+ STUFF NO-hm hm, so boy is having fun.In general, he is spending time on things and people he love, going out, learning new things, connecting or reconnecting with people, following where his passion and emotions lead him.He is also really enjoying having attention rn.

Tae:A part of him want to keep very private, but hes seeing around.As in learning things, discovering art he didnt know, a little imaginative.He has been hurt by public attention too much and wants to withdraw a little.He doesnt want ARMY to worry though, he just want us to understand he is human, and that would be hard on anyone. JK:Jk felt pumped up and talkative lol.So he learning to let things go and to find his joy in the things he has right now, he is learning to be happy.It is the end of a trial for him.He had many options and he thinks he picked right.It is the end of the phase.The next one might be the one where he meets his twin flame (if you have followed me for a while, you would know he insists on talking about them almost everytime lol).Their psychic link will strengthen like never before.He is in general quite happy with where he got in life and proud of himself for recent lessons he learned and went through

thank you ALSO for this question cuz uehhhhh i feel pretty emotional over my writing journey this 2023. i didnt write as much as i wanted, but im still proud of myself for what i managed to get out

the fic i enjoyed writing the most this year has got to be, hands down, growing pains

(yes i will shamelessly self promo it HAHA, it's the fic im proudest of writing this year!! to anybody out there hasnt read it, if you do read it, itd mean the world to me)

while this fic didnt do numbers or anything, it's the one fic that i'd been wanting to write basically ever since i learned of marius' family's lore and his backstory. it was an idea that i kept in my head for the longest time, and finally being able to write it was so rewarding. the comments i got on the fic too, both on the fic or from people telling me or from aRT INSPIRED BY THE FIC (CHIKA IF UR OUT THERE, KNOW THIS ART LIVES IN MY HEART!!), it all made me so so so grateful and happy. just goes to show that theres no such thing as too late to write a fic idea ;w; someone out there will always be able to resonate with the story ;w;

as for 2024......i....actually dont wanna be writing very much anymore, if im being honest ;w;

i know i just posted a wip of a christmas fic but after some reflection ive come to the conclusion that! writing isnt making me very happy lately if im being honest HAHA. and life is too short to waste on things that make me feel upset. the only reason im writing right now is because it feels like homework, which....isnt a great way to think about a hobby thats sposed to be bringing me joy.

maybe one day in this upcoming year, the joy to write will come back and i'll ferally work on a wip with passion and gusto again. but until then, take this ask as me taking an informal hiatus from fics and most hcs

to start off with my hobbies and interests, there’s a LOT of them and they’re very contrasting- I’ve probably spent the most cash on drawing (investment on a drawing iPad aaaouurg), but I also spend a lot of my time writing and singing! On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, I also enjoy blacksmithing, welding, and boxing a lot!! Im also a huuuuge history buff and I really like psychology as well!!

I really like spicy foods and fruit flavored things and hearing people ramble about things they're passionate about, and I like puzzles n stuff that makes me think :]] dislikes consist of chocolate, angry yelling, crowded spaces, and boring people !!

I'm a very 0-100 person where I'm either very low energy and distant, or high energy. Im pretty impulsive as well, at least when it comes to my own safety whether it be for a dumb reason or important. I very rarely talk about my interests to people who I'm not 100% comfortable with, but when I am it's VERY easy to urge me into infodumping about fuck all I can talk about my interests for actual hours and I get really emotional if I'm told to be quiet fjdjfusjf- id like to think I'm pretty ambitious and witty as well, I'm quick to snap back at people. In terms of outside of my social circle however, I'm very much so an introvert and have a very hard time meeting new people :']
