I've been learning that these angsty AUs are sometimes worthwhile even despite the temporary pain because I love getting to watch Donna and Harvey re-fall in love, and this author just does it beautifully. thoughts on LIS: Double Exposure?

This is probably gonna be my hottest take in awhile, but: I deeply dislike the idea of an official LiS1 direct sequel game existing. Excluding all my thoughts on the gameplay, story, Max's character, etc. I don't think a game like Double Exposure is necessary.

This isn't a new take either; back in 2020 I made a Reddit post saying I was glad we never got a continuation of Max and Chloe's story, because in order to have a plot, you have to have conflict. And to have conflict means your characters are forced to change or struggle in some way, and I simply wasn't interested in seeing that again. I never even read the comics. As long as Max and Chloe's future existed only in the fanbase's collective imagination and not in an officially licensed game, Pricefield could be as happy as I wanted and I wouldn't have to witness DN or D9's version of canon.

A lot of fans, including myself, are also confused and upset as to where Chloe could be in Double Exposure. Even if Chloe winds up having a surprise role, it would likely be too logistically difficult to write Chloe into one version of the story and not the other. Either way, DE is strongly pointing to Chloe no longer being the deuteragonist. If D9 was going to make a direct sequel with Max and Chloe, I could at least be intrigued by how they might write their dynamic and how they'd use Max's power in new and interesting ways. But instead there's... none of that. Chloe's nowhere to be seen and Max can't time travel anymore.

On a narrative level, Max and Chloe are the heart of the original Life is Strange. They represent the game's central relationship, and their very first interaction (Max saving Chloe's life) kicks off the entire story. Throughout the story, their dynamic advances the plot and mutually motivates their character arcs. You can't have LiS1 without either Max or Chloe; the story simply wouldn't exist without them. Now in DE, they don't even seem to be in each other's lives anymore. It's true, this series is meant to reflect universal feelings and experiences, which could include breakups, but the romantic catharsis of Pricefield as canon soulmates who defied time and space itself to stay together forever is something you can only get from the beauty of fiction. To jab DE's story with a dose of reality and go, "Eh, they grew apart. Shit happens," totally undermines everything the Bae ending stood for.

On a technical level, Max's rewind was an objectively brilliant game mechanic. LiS1 arrived onto the scene after Telltale had paved the way for the resurgence of choice-based, episodic games, but LiS1 totally reinvented the wheel by giving the player the option to go back and weigh each option before continuing, essentially save-scumming in-game. But the right choice was never that easy to determine, and Rewind brilliantly complemented Max's character arc of overcoming her indecision and learning to live with her choices. Not to mention, you could also use Rewind to solve puzzles, instead of the endless fetch quests the later games had. No other LiS game since then has given the player that kind of agency and interactivity. LiS2 had telekinesis, but the player couldn't use it, only Daniel. D9 tried with Backtalk and Empathy, but Max's Rewind was truly the narrative and gameplay jackpot that they haven't been able to recreate since.

So if you take away one half of the central relationship that made the first game so memorable, and the supernatural power/game mechanic that made it so fun to play... why even bring Max back at all? It just feels like D9 threw away their golden opportunity to build upon the major selling points of the first game and are only relying on name recognition of the Life is Strange "brand" and Max Caulfield.

What upsets me most of all about a direct sequel existing is that it proves that Life is Strange, as a series, now stands more for profits than originality. Life is Strange will always be an IP meant to make money for Square, I know that, but back when LiS1 was just a brand new episodic game, it stood out for how different it dared to be. In a landscape saturated with shooters, sexualized female characters, and casual misogyny, LiS1 instead featured a teenage girl in a contemporary setting that took her seriously and made her the hero of her story. Before it was a franchise, LiS wasn't concerned with the bottom dollar; it was a piece of art that just wanted to tell a thoughtful, unique story.

Whether you love it or hate it, Life is Strange 2 was an insanely risky follow-up to Life is Strange that refused to rely on the convenience of a direct sequel because Dontnod stuck to their artistic vision. Meanwhile, all of Deck Nine's games have leaned on the first game's following to generate interest (BtS being a direct prequel, TC bringing back Steph, and Wavelengths expanding on Steph's connection to Chloe, Rachel, and Arcadia Bay). In other words, all of the subsequent LiS games by D9 have played it very, very safe. It's worked like a damn charm because there are still elements I love about each game, but the basic principle is nostalgia-baiting fans. It's just that now, Double Exposure isn't hiding that nostalgia bait at all anymore and prioritizing profits over telling a unique story. It's sad to see that LiS has strayed so far from its risky, daring, original, and unique artistic beginnings.

Before I end, I'll say that I can't be too cynical about it all, nor do I want to be. Because I can't deny how much joy this whole series has brought me, too. LiS was what got me into narrative adventure games and pushed the boundaries of what a video game could be. If nothing else, I am truly thrilled that Hannah Telle got the chance to play Max again. D9's always been great at maintaining relationships with their actors, and the casts of their games always have consistently great chemistry. Getting recognized by Erika Mori on my own blog is still unbelievable and speaks to the amazing community that LiS has built. As you can see, I'm still posting and reblogging stuff about Double Exposure. And while I don't see myself buying or playing this game for myself, I know it'll keep all of us talking for awhile, and I still live for a good discussion.

For Chloe lament the ice cream man André; would he be in trouble when off course Sabine wouldn’t be willing to overlook him not having a license for his cart and what if an incident happens where the flavour he insists on a new couple had an energy to one of them causing him to be shut down and he calls the mayor ungrateful for what he did when she and her husband first came to his cart?

Debating this one.

Because on the one hand, Sabine is tough but fair and reasonable. Andre needs a license to operate...actually, he needs SEVERAL licenses and permits if what I'm reading about businesses in Paris is accurate. So the matter is just that he needs to GET one, and it's not like that would be impossible for him.

Sabine would shut his stand down and then point him to the forms and methods and give him a fair shot to get it reopened the right way. It's not like she would deny him out of hand. But it WOULD put a limit on how he's able to run the business since yes, the sweetheart ice cream is his main draw, but like you said, he's the one choosing the ice cream FOR people so what if someone has an allergy? Magic may point him to the soulmates but it's doubtful it would alert him to someone's dislikes or intolerances. He could still run his shop, but he would have to get licensed and change how he does it, which he may find less than fun.

...

....on the other hand, I have a funny idea of Sabine simply shutting down his cart. Not that she wants to, but she's Mayor now and has a responsibility to run things by the book. Then Tom feels bad and gives Andre a job running a new ice cream parlor at the hotel.

Sabine is less than pleased.

Tom: But honeeeeeeeey, his sweetheart ice cream is a staple! It's how we fell in love!

Sabine: It's also how you had an allergic reaction that turned your face red.

Jean knows.

He’s an idiot but he knows he shouldn’t be jealous. In fact, he has no right to feel anything at all. He shouldn’t even be looking to be honest. And yet, he can’t help it. Not when his world slows to a stop, walls caving in, vision tunnelling to zero in on you every time you’re in the same room together.

His grip tightens on the dumbbells he’s holding, knuckles white, teeth clenched. The sound of his blood pumping roars in his ears, silencing the music blaring in his earphones. 

Why the fuck are you staring at him? 

There you are, sitting on a bench across the gym in your cute little workout outfit and instead of looking at Jean, your eyes are locked on his friend in front of you. Reiner’s deep in a squat, with at least three plates on each side like the miserable show off he is. You must be between sets, with your water bottle in hand, but your gaze is fixed on his form as he grunts out another rep.

Honestly, Jean can’t even blame you when Reiner’s out there throwing around weights like it’s nothing. If he was attracted to men, he would probably be checking him out, too.

Jean huffs in annoyance. He looks down at his arms and flexes his triceps. Sure, he may not be as beefy as Reiner, but he’s no slouch himself. Why is it that you never seem to notice?

Sometimes he’ll feel a glimmer of hope when you smile at him the way you do with that little twinkle in your eyes as if laughing at an inside joke only the two of you share; only to be shattered in a second when you turn that same look on someone else. There’s only so much more of this he can take before he feels like he’ll be about ready to burst. 

Jean knows he should just look away and focus on himself. But how can he when you’re right there, looking as perfect as ever despite being sweaty and messy from working out. Hell, it only makes him want you even more. He wishes it could be him making you sweat. You would never need to go to the gym with the way he knows he could work you out. If only he could just muster up the courage to tell you how he feels. All he wants is to just make you his. He swears he would do anything to give you everything. 

He’s burning holes into Reiner’s body with his eyes and the other man must be able to feel it because he halts, looking up into the mirror to make eye contact with Jean. Reiner double takes and racks his weights. Clearly confused, he slides his headphones off his ears and turns to face Jean with his eyebrows raised. The movement catches your attention and you stir from where you’re sitting on the bench across from him. 

Your eyes follow Reiner’s gaze to land on where Jean is standing, seething, still gripping the dumbbells like his life depends on it. And then, Jean’s heart stutters and the air leaves his lungs in a whoosh … because there it is. Your smile. You've got that smile lighting up your face and now all the tension is escaping his body, leaving him weak in the knees. What he wouldn’t give to have you look at him and only him that way. 

When you lift your hand up in a small wave, it's the nail in the coffin. That's it. He’s going to have to make you his now.

there r so many possible interpretations in LIS sometimes that occasionally when asking yourself whether max and rachel r both deer and chloe is the butterfly— or if max is the butterfly rachel is the deer and chloe is the raven— OR if max is the deer rachel is the blue jay and chloe is the butterfly— the answer is yes.

Okay, so I noticed a certain detail during a bit of the livestream footage at around 1:41, when Max picks up the picture, it actually shows two different pictures in between cuts. If you look closely, the first picture is not a Polaroid photo and might be the same picture from Life is Strange 2 Episode 5 before it cuts to the Polaroid photo. That being said, we might get different photos and dialogue, with Chloe being referenced as the green-haired girl.

I went back to check and holy shit, you spotted an incredible find!

I found a Reddit thread on the same topic, and u/Mazzus_Did_That sketched out this rough silhouette from the zoomed in photo:

This could possibly be D9's version of Max and Chloe's ~2017 selfie in Away, but just pure speculation at this point! Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

Which is your most hated character in Miraculous Ladybug?

I'm sure you can guess why.

There was a lot of potential in this character! When I heard that she was gonna get a Miraculous, I was excited to see what would lead up to that! I was curious to see what the kick in the butt would be to get her on the path of redemption!

And I was sorely disappointed. Instead of getting better, she got worse and even more entitled, and it didn't help that she was enabled by Number Three...

...let me tell you something.

I was a Marichat shipper. I was. It was one of the first ships I published fanfic for. If you look on my Wattpad, you can find a lot of Marichat shit. I ate it up, and I was super excited when we learned that there would be a Balcony Scene. I got even more excited when I learned that the episode, Glaciator, came out on my birthday.

What did I get? I got disappointment and discomfort when Chat Noir threw a temper tantrum over Ladybug not showing up for a plan she didn't agree to. He used his friends, who expected him to be there, as an excuse to sneak out. He complains all the time about not having time for his friends, and then doesn't spend time with them.

Slowly, I started to notice more and more off-behavior from Adrien Agreste and slowly grew more and more angry with this show, from telling Marinette to stay quiet to publicly enjoying Ladybug being uncomfortable. He is the symbol of how out of touch the creator is with young girls. It got to the point where I announced that I was never writing fanfic again and was solely gonna focus on my original writing because I was so sick of writing salt and knew it was unhealthy.

I didn't keep that promise, but I still hate Adrien. I still hate Chat Noir. I haven't taken down my old Marichat fics because I feel like they're an important showcase of where I started from, but I can't bring myself to write anything involving Adrien in a romantic relationship with anyone.

Shy Reader Dating Chloe and Rachel -

Chloe and Rachel are some of the boldest, most outgoing people you've ever met. While they can be reluctant in their own ways just like you, you've always had more difficulty with social interaction and making big steps.

But that's no problem when you've got the two of them by your side. It's your turn to order and you're worried you'll mess up? They have no trouble ordering for you, they've practically memorized your favourites by now anyway!

When you started crushing on the two of them, you were too nervous to make the first move. While Chloe was a bit oblivious to your feelings, dealing with her own attraction to you, Rachel picked them up immediately. And she had no trouble at all convincing you join her and Chloe's relationship.

And so far it's been great!

They're always going out somewhere new in town, dragging you along with them to the junk yard, and stargazing in the trunck of Chloe's pick up, you undoubtedly curled up between them.

Being with them definitely pushes you out of your comfort zone at times, but even with their unreserved behavior, they never forget about you.

They'll never say no to stepping away and taking a break with you. Don't feel like going out at all that day? No worries, Rachel will put in a movie or Chloe will ask you to go against her in a round of combat video games.

Not to mention they're a bit obsessed with coddling you. You being shy is a bit cute, and they'll never not talk about it. Attention from other people isn't always the best, but from them it's just about all you could ask for.

The best part is they'll never put you down for your shy nature. They get it, they've had their moments, and you help them too in your own ways. It's good for them every now and then to not be out partying or getting into trouble and just take a day off to chill out with you.
