Otus Thai Kitchen & Coffee, 1253 N La Brea Ave, West Hollywood, CA 90038
Love that you can get an authentic Thai breakfast at Otus all day. The chef is Thai and takes pride in serving authentic Thai street food (appetizers, soups, salads, egg rolls, spring rolls, rice dishes, noodles, curries), including breakfast (roti, jook, crispy pork belly). It’s a nice spot where you can also get quality espresso drinks (they serve Be Bright Coffee), wine, sake, and beer. The produce is sourced from farmer’s markets, organic when possible.
Khao kai jiew rice bowl ($15): Thai style omelet, ground chicken, over rice: The omelette is made by frying beaten eggs seasoned with fish sauce in hot oil. It puffs up a bit and is crispy in bits. It was nicely seasoned and went very well with the steamed white rice, sriracha, and cucumber slices. I would have loved more veggies, shallots, or pickles, but that’s not traditional.
Cold brew coffee ($5): strong and good
The space is stylish and modern. On weekends, they have bottomless mimosas.
Parking is tough in this area.
4.5 out of 5 stars

saw a post the other day, can't remember if it was tumblr or reddit, but it was like 'picky eaters are always characterized as only eating fries and chicken nuggets. what about us picky eaters who only like things like sushi and tiramisu, we exist'
anyway that's human dream

hey!! how do you like to eat your eggs?
my favorite way is probably like. borderline deep fried the way they do thai omelettes. but i can never be bothered to make them that way myself so usually i fry sunny side up and try to get the bottom a little brown but keep the yolk jammy/runny
#sasha answers#anon#i think if i had a proper wok and/or a setup to strain and reuse fry oil i'd make thai omelettes way more cause they're sooo tasty#like just the egg over rice with some chili sauce or prik nam pla. amazing#but i don't have that setup so a normal sunny egg is my go to

i'm in love with the egg theory because i like to think that there's a little of me in everybody and a little of everybody in me, to which i go, "yah compassion is wowzas maybe we're not so different", but then i see a perspective or opinion so utterly detached from my own experiences that i stop and go, "huh. perhaps compassion isn't unconditional, and perhaps i don't have to understand or accept every version of myself if it's something i don't truly like"
#the egg theory my beloved#i fucking love eggs btw#eggs vs potatoes#NO!#NO MORE PITTING TWO BAD BITCHES AGAINST EACH OTHER#eggs are so versatile and they taste just so good with like everything it's unreal#gonna make thai omelette mmmm

Today on- Random new Thai expressions I stumble upon:
ผักบุ้งลอยฟ้า Flying Morning Glory
/phak boong laawy faa/ = lit. water spinach/morning glory floating in the sky
So today I sat down to catch up on We Are and only got about 10 minutes into ep. 2. This entire scene and the lead-up to it already cracked me up with how Tan talks ("คุณมึงครับ" 555) and acts but then I looked up this dish and the way some restaurants make a whole show out of cooking it! Which is to say- this?
Accurate! It's also called ผัดผักบุ้งไฟแดง /phat phak boong fai daaeng/ = Morning Glory stir-fried over high-heat -> ผัดไฟแดง /phat fai daaeng/ = lit. red-fire stir-fry
They're missing the most ridiculous part though which is the toss at the end. The subs say flip but the word used is โยน /yohn/ and knowing what I know now, 'throw' or 'toss' is more fitting lol
Here's a clip of a restaurant in Pattaya preparing the dish:
youtube
...and a longer one from 1984 of a restaurant in Phitsanulok that shows the entire process and several throws (they also throw some ไข่เจียว /khai jiaao/ = Thai-style omelette):
youtube
Another tangent cause I can't not bring up Thai music- There's a song by Bodyslam of the same name, ผักบุ้งลอยฟ้า feat. F.HERO, that references this peculiar way of preparing the dish but goes a lot deeper. Water spinach is a really common vegetable and the stir-fry is easy and cheap to prepare so they juxtapose this modest dish with being a star and the temporary nature of that success while also expressing gratitude for their fans:
เพียงผักบุ้งลอยฟ้าหาใช่ดวงดารา /phiang phak boong laawy faa haa chai duaang daa raa/ = Just morning glory floating in the sky, not a star. ในวันที่ลอยฟ้าได้โปรดรับฉันลงจาน /nai wan thee laawy faa, dai bproht rap chan lohng jaan/ = On the day that I'm floating in the sky, please catch/accept me on [your] plate.
If you're interested in the full lyrics, you can read a translation here!
Anyway, that's how I lost about two hours to flying veggies! ...also, the reason why I'm never sure how to explain how I'm learning Thai, these odd deep-dives just kinda keep happening 🥴

Love Sea Ep 4 Stray Thoughts
Last week, Rak avoided Mut for a few days after the underwater panic incident before Mut got tired of it and dragged him to a cute spot on the beach. Rak opened up about the messed up relationship his mom had with his dad, and how it's made him believe that love is fake and transactional. After more bonding and seeing how Mut loves his home, the two had another stellar sex session at Mut's place. Mut asked Rak to say, and we left at Rak asking Mut to come to Bangkok with him. Meanwhile, Vie and Mook continue to be weird, and now Vie has somehow tricked Mook into being her fake girlfriend for the tabloids.
What a moody atmosphere to open with. I'm gonna miss the island as a setting.
I'm kinda with Tongrak about the pickup truck, but also he deserved those Ls when he had to ride a motorcycle. Still, it's very funny how many full sized vehicles we're now seeing in the background.
"I'm used to it." Damn, Mut.
Hold on, I wanna hear more about the Thai-Vietnam web series localization economy.
Oh, Rak, you could just say you really enjoyed your time on the island and you will miss him. He's never gonna say no to the money because he's got bills and responsibilities.
Is Mut going to Bangkok with no clothes??
Chapter 4: From Seaside to Skyline
Is this the Naughty Babe house?
Mook has such a weird relationship with Rak.
Despite the weird energy of this scene, they actually should get tested together if they're going to keep having sex.
Okay, Mut is having Palm send him things, and also sending money so Palm isn't SOL. We haven't lost all sense.
Aya is very cute in these outfits.
I kinda wish we'd seen the Connor story if it's going to have such huge bearing on why Mook is so nervous.
This contract is fucking weird. I get Mut trying to help Tongrak work through his issues, but I am frowning.
Every time someone tries to deride Mahasamut he owns the joke and makes it his own. It's clearly a practiced defense mechanism.
This whole dynamic is hard to track right now. Rak seems kinda cold with Mut except when it's to tease Mook.
It helps that Peat has good control of his eyes. Every time Rak gets scared and says something rude to Mut, you can see his eyes searching Mut's face to see if he went too far and scared him away.
Can we get back to the drama with Rak's sister and father?
I guess we should be glad that maybe someone with style went with Mook to buy clothes for Mut? I feel like Rak may be helping Vie?
Get you a man who will make you an omelette in the middle of the night.
Kind of a sleepy episode as they transitioned to Bangkok. I haven't given up on the premise yet, but I hope we get more interaction between Rak and Mut next week so we get into why this is ostensibly about sex yet Rak doesn't want it now that they're here.

Okay I couldn't help myself while talking with @loveable-sea-lemon about their big bang ideas. I'm not participating because I didn't think I'd have time or energy or ideas or whatever, but they were teasing a few thoughts for theirs and I, uh.....took a left turn, perhaps.
Anyhow, here's the most ridiculous low-key piece of crack I have ever made:
Vegas and Pete are getting married and trying to do some wedding planning and of course neither of them has ever put any thought into actually getting married in their entire lives. (Vegas has planned on how he would crash a wedding. For murder.) But out of the two of them, Pete has at least *some* idea of normal customs and cites some Buddhist traditions they can incorporate, which Vegas likes for the most part. But they're looking at other Thai weddings and Vegas is like "these are BORING where is the fun element?" And Pete shows him more creative options, among them being themed weddings. And suddenly Vegas gets OBSESSED and spends an entire night putting together something in rigorous detail. He forgets to make breakfast like he usually does in the morning, so Pete wakes up having slept alone cuz Vegas burned the midnight oil in his office all night, and sighs as he makes some simple omelettes. He sends Macau off to school, does his nakey fitness routine (with no hubby to interrupt him 😥), showers, and then chooses a good book to read while pretending he's not a little concerned or slightly miffed at Vegas' absence.
Finally, a little after noon, Vegas emerges in that "mom I frowed up" pajama number, carrying his laptop. He certainly looks tired but it doesn't overshadow the smile on his face when he sits down beside Pete, kisses his cheek, and says "I have something to show you." Pete now shoves down the mounting curiosity that's been bothering him all day and anxiously waits as Vegas opens the laptop and adjusts it so both of them can see everything on the screen. "We can discuss anything we want to change, but this is a perfect idea," Vegas tells him. Pete sees himself looking at a registry for several customized decorations, from seat covers to engraved wine glasses to cardboard cutouts (he wasn't sure what those were about). "This looks very nice!" Pete smiles. "Good! I made a document that lists all of my ideas too, and I wanted you to look at it." Nodding, Pete rests his chin on his hands as he leans closer to both Vegas and the screen. Once the document is pulled up, though, he sits up straight in horror at reading the large bold-lettered font in which Vegas had put the title: MACAU THEMED WEDDING

Senses and other Specifics:
WHAT DOES YOUR MUSE SMELL LIKE? Lavender and cedar! He doesn't wear cologne or perfume, but he likes scented soaps.
WHAT DO YOUR MUSE’S HANDS FEEL LIKE? His hands tend to be slightly warm, but on the drier side, thanks to LA's climate.
WHAT DOES YOUR MUSE USUALLY EAT IN A DAY? Not enough, lol. It depends on how many spoons he can allocate to cooking and eating, though unfortunately there's relatively little variation because of his allergies. He knows what's safe, and does not often vary from that. Breakfast specifically depends on spoon allocation; on his worst days it's nothing; when he has very few spoons, it's just a London fog latte. When he's well rested and has the energy to spare for it, he likes to make omelettes and scrambles. Lunch depends on how busy his schedule is, and if he remembers to eat. He likes noodle soups, but it has to be rice, soba, or other types of gluten free starches. He eats a lot of rice and gluten free pastas because they're easy to cook. Gnocchi is also a favorite. When he has energy, he likes international food, and particularly mexican, Thai, and Indian. He likes spice, even though his tolerance for it is pretty low. He also typically has a number of frozen meals and canned soups on hand for dinner because he usually does not have much energy left if/when he gets home. Ironically, though he forgets to eat, he is VERY hydrated... specifically, he's almost always seen with a mug of hot tea. (Would have a fun time with Uncle Iroh if he ever got thrown into the ATLA universe).
DOES YOUR MUSE HAVE A GOOD SINGING VOICE? Yes. He picked up singing in high school because the theatre club was doing a musical, and then he particularly got into musical theatre in college. His favorite musical is Les Mis and he knows all of Javert's and Jean Valjean's parts by memory. (He definitely does not feel some sort of connection to javert and this has absolutely nothing to do with how he views himself. And no, he absolutely does note see any similarities between himself and Valjean what are you talking about.)
DOES YOUR MUSE HAVE ANY BAD HABITS OR NERVOUS TICKS? He tends to excessively clean/polish his glasses when he's nervous, made sure he lost or never developed bad habits as a kid. If we're calling drug abuse a bad habit, he did have that in college for a short while, though.
WHAT DOES YOUR MUSE USUALLY LOOK LIKE / WEAR? On the more formal side of business casual or the more casual side of business formal when he's at work, the latter particularly for board meetings. When he's not, it's usually jeans and either a t-shirts, casual button down shirts, or turtleneck sweaters in the winter.
IS YOUR MUSE AFFECTIONATE? When he trusts someone, yes. He particularly likes to hug and cuddle. One of his other love languages is knitting/crocheting blankets for the people he cares about, but do not under any circumstances ask if he made it or suggest that he did.
WHAT POSITION DOES YOUR MUSE SLEEP IN? Slumped over his desk with his keyboard as a pillow, to wake up having accidentally written a few thousand lines of gibberish code, more often than not. Or in the universe he exists in with @evecolourshock, in a tangle of limbs with his siblings. When he does actually manage to make it to bed, it's either curled up in a ball as small as he can or on his stomach with his arms crossed over (under?) his chest, face turned to the side.
COULD YOU HEAR YOUR MUSE IN THE HALLWAY FROM ANOTHER ROOM? In theory, if he wanted to. His father demanded that he was always quiet when he was little, so being loud makes him anxious. Theatre helped him learn to project his voice, though there are only a few specific spaces where he's comfortable doing so.
Taking up @the-expatriate's invitation to do this one.
Tagging: @starstruckxstray (tagging you only once so I don't bombard your notes, but for Kero and/or Shikoba, whoever you'd like respond for), @evecolourshock, @occupationallyhazardous (for any of your muses from any of your blogs), @iamnoprogram, @computerwarrior, @enforcerrinzler, and @riinzler, if you'd like. As always, no pressure if you don't want to for any reason. Also "tagging" anyone who sees this and would like to do it. Feel free to tag me in your muse's results in a separate post. Please don't reblog this one from me, thanks!

I'm very much a California girl. I grew up in Long Beach, then moved to San Pedro, which was very multicultural. And my stepfather was Thai and Hawaiian. I do have a musical family, my [biological] dad was in a barbershop quartet and my mom had a lovely voice, which I of course didn't inherit. I was really athletic - I played handball in school and beat all the boys twice before the bell rang - and I had a lot of anger I needed to get out, so I figured I would play the drums. I wound up playing in bands within three weeks of starting to play. Thankfully my family was encouraging. I always wanted to be an artist. There was this gallery near our house and they use to offer oil painting lessons. And I was really into that. That was really my jam.
When I heard punk rock, it had a really big impact on me. I was like, Woah, you can do that? In high school, these girls invited me to go see The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Pink Flamingos. Then you start meeting other people, you know, the guys from Red Cross, and The Stingers [a Longbeach band], because they were also seeing the movies. There was a definite crossover with, you know, punk rock and John Waters movies.
Some of the bands I really liked going to see in Hollywood were like, The Weirdos, and X. I really loved X so much. I copied Exene's hair, with just the bangs and kind of like the egg running down your head of different colors, as if you just cracked an egg of colors down your hair. I also liked The Alleycats - God there were so many bands at that time - Nervous Gender - The Bags. I also listened to a lot of Neil Young and Nick Cave and the bad seeds.
I played in a punk band that was like an art punk band. One of my first bands was called Sexually Frustrated. The two girls that were in it were little people [midgets] and you know, I'm like six foot tall. So it was like a visual thing on top of what we were doing. I was also in a band called IUD with the same two women. We were playing with The Omelettes at Camarillo State Hospital. You know, it was very arty, and there were like saxophones.
I met Courtney [Love] through a friend and she wanted me to be the drummer in a band she was starting. Courtney really wanted to make good songs. I don't think I'd ever played in bands where the words were really revealing anything of yourself - the emotional part of being a woman. I really responded to her lyrics. It's like Courtney was speaking for me in a way I couldn't for myself. The words really tapped into something. Pretty On the Inside really spoke to me - all the horrible stuff in my childhood, the dynamics in my family and with other people - that song just really, really spoke to me. I think I wrote a lot of my drum parts to accent what she was saying in the songs. I would, like, ride the cymbal, but make it sizzle - like Rat Scabies from The Damned, he would do that alot. I'm a very emotional drummer. I'm not the timekeeper metronome type of drummer.
When Jill [Emery] joined, that was when Lisa Roberts had left. Courtney let her go because she was threatening the owner of a club with a screwdriver when they didn't pay us. It turned out the owner was the wife of Eddie Nash, the infamous gangster, so Courtney was like, "No she has to go." And Courtney had already been in acting, so she knew all the Hollywood rigmarole.
I wasn't as into Pearl Jam - I was more into Mudhoney. I really liked the garage rock and Iggy Pop - kind of that Detroit thing.
Babydoll [from Pretty on the Inside] was about Madonna. Courtney saw her driving a Mercedes and didn't like it. Courtney worshipped Madonna though. I think that was her playbook. She wanted to be the rock version of Madonna.
I guess it could be said that grunge owes a lot of its existence to Reagan. We were deep in Reagan's America at the time, with the hypocritical values at the time.
Around the time Courtney got pregnant, I was also pregnant, but didn't realize it at the time. I'd had the flu for weeks, and Eric [Erlandson] goes, "Maybe you're pregnant." And it turns out I was. And unfortunately, my relationship at the time was breaking apart because I was always gone [on tour with Hole]. I got a voice-mail on my answering machine that I was being let go from the band, and this was after Eric had already given me money for an abortion. Courtney was telling me we were gonna be playing with Sonic Youth in November in Japan, so she didn't think me being pregnant was going to be good with me playing drums. So I thought, OK, as part of my career move, I'm going to have the abortion. And then she just kicked me out anyway.
I was actually kicked out three times, which a lot of people don't know. Courtney chastised me in the middle of a show because she thought I wasn't playing fast enough. I felt she was publicly humiliating me, so I threw a drumstick at her head. She was mad and kicked me out. Then it was like, OK you can come back if you just do Slimfast and cigarettes and then play drums everyday and do drum lessons. She really liked how I played, but she wanted me to play perfectly, like a Dave Grohl. So I would just comply - I lost weight, etc.
There were a lot worse experiences I had with Courtney, like her telling me, 'I made you,' and stuff like that, like saying I needed to do whatever she wanted at any given moment because 'I didn't even belong here.' So it feeds on your insecurities. That's what manipulative people do. It just got more and more tense that way.
And I mean at first she would, like, spend the night and we would pig out on Entenmann's and watch like weird videos, and have fun like that, but you know, now I realize what she was doing - she was trying to learn all my Achilles heels. And then she would just press on those things when she wanted me to do something.
Courtney was really smart. She was a speed reader - I mean she went to Montessori school - so she's a fascinating person.
Kurt's funeral was intense. There were about 50 people, not a lot of people there. It was Kurt's family, the Sub Pop family, and just all the people he knew. I was around Kurt, but I didn't really know him. We had very few private moments and unfortunately we did not get to be friends. I went to his apartment one time and he was in his pajamas and I sat on their bed. And he was excited to tell me he had a dream about me. He goes, 'We were in Aberdeen and we were riding bikes in my neighborhood,' and I was asking questions and he was telling me about it. And Courtney was standing in the hallway, very Bette Davis, smoking a cigarette, and she goes, 'Well he needs some female friends, but not you, your tits are too big.' And I was engaged to be married, so I don't think she thought I was flirting with him. And then he just looked at his feet, really ashamed. And I left shortly after that. But I'm proud of what we created.
-Caroline Rue, original drummer for Hole
