If Only
For @weektg! Hey, turns out I'm a big fat liar! Here's another piece by me for TG Week! wooo... Unsure what theme this is. Maybe "Regret" is a good fit? Maybe that can be next year’s prompt. No crosspost on AO3 this time; I might retool this for something later (shhhh)... Anyways, under the cut!
"If only I hadn't met Takatsuki."
The words on the page stared back at Hinami, telling her what she had known for some time now. If she hadn’t received that card with that number on it, she wouldn’t have been absorbed into the Tree as nutrients. She wouldn’t have killed so many Doves— so many people with families. She wouldn’t have been a part of the Tree’s scouting unit, and been falsely claimed as one of their best.
(She was just so weak, after all.)
Even if she had been separated from Banjou, if she didn’t have that white card—
Hinami tossed the notebook across the room. It hit the metal wall with a thump, and she leaned back against its mirror, staring up at the ceiling. She saw the camera in the corner, always watching her and always listening to her.
She wondered what it was like being the watcher instead of the watched. What was it like, seeing hundreds upon thousands of ghouls caged like animals with little to do besides draw, read, and write? She’d heard about wardens beating some of the detainees out of boredom, and that was how ghouls like Yamori were born, but they didn’t seem to be around in her time here. She was thankful for that much.
But… she was out of time. Aogiri’s ranks had changed too fast for her to keep up. Investigator Urie had kept bringing more and more unfamiliar faces, and each one had been another bump to her disposal date.
And now she knew the day she would die.
She hugged her knees, trembling where she sat.
I don’t want to die.
I don’t want to disappear.
I don’t want this.
I never wanted this.
Is this the price of strength? Is this my punishment?
The notebook seemed to stare at her across the cell.
If only I hadn’t met—
“We have a ghoul in custody believed to be the leader of the Aogiri Tree.”
Hinami’s eyes shot open.
What? Was that—?
She listened closer. Her ears and nose reached beyond her cell, ascending the levels of Cochlea. She shut out everyone inside, only focusing on the entrance. There were guards. Lots of them, wearing facial masks, carrying firearms loaded with RC suppressants. Leading them was—
No, no, focus. Who are they taking? Hats, suits, belts with firearms— restraints made of quinque steel. The type used in Cochlea. Wrapped around the body, like a straitjacket. A short individual, with shorter hair.
The unmistakable scent of hibiscus flowers.
It was her.
Takatsuki. Eto. Here. In Cochlea. Not on Rushima. Not with the others. Yumitsu, Miza, Naki— Ayato. Why? Why was she here? She let herself get arrested? For what reason? Hinami knew about the ongoing extermination operation. Was everyone in Aogiri— good and bad alike— going to…?
And then the one leading her to her cell. It was him. He was here. Hinami didn’t understand. After six months without visits, six months of wondering what he’d been up to, he’d finally returned here with— with Eto?
What was going on?
Hinami heard Ayato and his unit arrive on the property. He found Banjou, Ichimi, Sante, and Jiro too. They were going to attempt a rescue. Away from Rushima. Away from Yumitsu, Miza, and Naki. Aogiri was falling apart.
The Tree was rotting.
The alarms went off, and the fighting broke out soon after, but the one who opened the entrance to Hinami’s cell wasn’t Ayato, or Banjou, or anyone she might have expected.
“I’m sorry it took so long,” Ken said, with a familiar sad smile on his face. “Let’s get out of here.”
Rage. Joy. Sadness.
All these emotions and more flooded Hinami’s system. Ken… was back. He was back, but… He seemed so much sadder. He seemed so much more stuck. Because she recognized that smile on his face. It was the same smile he gave her before he left her.
She staggered to her feet.
What should she say? What should she do? It was him. She should be happy. This was what she wanted, right?
She stumbled across the cell.
But Sasaki… Sasaki seemed happy too. He had friends. He had a family. He was loved and respected in the CCG. But for Ken to return, those things had to be taken away. Because Ken was someone who slingshotted into the past. Ken was the type to overcompensate, make up for the past by sacrificing the present.
Hinami slapped him. Hard.
“Why… are you here?” she asked slowly, failing to hold back the tears in her eyes.
Why haven’t you learned?
“You’re…”
You’re just doing the same thing again, aren’t you?
“Y-You’re an investigator…”
You’re leaving me.
He didn’t say anything for a moment. The alarms continued to blare. Humans and ghouls continued to fight each other, continued to kill each other, with no one winning in the end.
Leaving all of us.
“This is my last job,” he finally said. “We should go…”
She heard the reaper a few floors above, swinging his scythe. Ayato was engaging him. With him were two others. If she concentrated, she could almost believe they were—
She took a shaky breath. “How are we getting out?”
He led her down the hall, and told her about the drainage port. They ran for what felt like hours. The halls all looked the same, enough to drive one crazy.
She stabbed a strange investigator. He smelled like a pâté, but he also smelled like Ken. There wasn’t enough time to dwell on it. They kept running.
Ken left her. Again. She sank against the wall. Still weak. Still helpless. Still—
“Hinami? Hinami!!”
She looked up again, and it was Ayato. He ran to her, and she almost thought he was gonna hug her, but it never came. As always, he just put his hand on her shoulder, and it meant everything.
“Sorry I’m late…” he apologized with a smile. “Let’s go home.”
Hinami nodded and looked at who he brought. She froze. She had been right.
“T-Touka…” she whispered. “Yomo…”
Yomo looked just like she remembered, if a little bit beaten up. And Touka… Touka was beautiful. Like a butterfly unfurling its wings. She seemed so much stronger. Stronger than Hinami.
If only I—
Touka came up to her, raised her hands, and pinched Hinami’s cheek. “Idiot,” she said simply, grinning.
No need for words, or punishment, or anything. Touka was just glad she was safe.
The tears flowed freely. “I-I’m sorry…”
But reunions couldn’t last too long. They reunited with Banjou, who gave one of his nostalgic bear hugs, then headed to the compactor room after disabling it. Once they were through, they were free. Hinami would live. Her punishment was over.
The compactor room was so much larger than she imagined. As she ran, Hinami wondered how many ghouls had met their end being crushed by the quinque steel cylinders. How many quinques had been made. How she might have screamed when she was sandwiched between them.
… She heard something. Black suits, and someone she thought she had killed.
Typing.
Undoing.
Reactivating.
The cylinders came to life and rushed forward. Hinami turned to Touka, Yomo, Ayato, Banjou, Jiro, Sante, Ichimi, the Gas Masks, the remnants of Aogiri, as the space closed, the air rushed out of her lungs, the end result—
Footsteps. Lighter than air, almost like a bird taking flight.
A familiar flash of green inserting itself into her vision.
The sound of crunching steel, and the crackling of kagune.
No one died. Everyone was safe.
Amidst the ruins of quinque steel and kagune, Hinami looked up at a familiar, massive kakuja. Ayato caught her before she could fall from the shock.
“Why would Eto…?” Banjou wondered aloud, before shaking his head. “It doesn’t matter. We gotta go, guys!”
But Hinami kept staring. Maybe to Banjou, it didn’t make sense. Maybe even Ayato couldn’t understand it. Because they didn’t know. You can’t understand what you don’t know. You can’t understand what you don’t spend time with.
In hindsight, it was so obvious.
For a moment, she was fourteen again, sitting in a coffee shop and wondering why Shuu was taking so long in the bathroom.
A flash of green entered her vision that day, and gave her a ticket down the rabbit hole.
“Hinami,” Ayato said, patting her. “Let’s get going.”
“I think Kaneki… is the type of person who wants to be loved.”
She blinked. “R-Right…”
She gave the kakuja one last glance before she ran.
If only…

4 and 19 if you please?
4) Random Ship that you like
hmmmm I’m not hugely into shipping and I’m guessing this is for more rare ships but Etoitorize could be cool. Baddest girl gang you’ve ever seen (and they kiss!!). I’d like to be weird for a second and say that Jesse Pinkman (I have not seen a single episode of Breaking Bad) and Kuroneki would be super cute, I know nothing about Jesse except his science teacher makes him cook meth but Jesse giving Kaneki his beanie when he’s cold <3<3<3 and Kaneki helps him with homework!! Anyone who has actually seen Breaking Bad can go ahead and tell me that I’m insane it’s ok I will encourage you
19) BEST MOMENT IN THE MANGA
100% KANEKI GIVING HINAMI A HAIRCUT. HANDS DOWN BEST MOMENT, I KNOW YOU’RE PROBABLY LIKE “ohhh but Sand!! There’s so many other more significant parts of TG!! This was only one page it’s not important to the plot, it’s not a turning point for anyone’s character and doesn’t mean anything!!!!” AND TO THIS I RESPECTFULLY SAY: ok cool I still like this page the most. ITS CUTE. MY FAVOURITE BOY IS THERE. HE’S HAPPY. HINAMI IS HAPPY. They’re just bonding and that’s it. This scene makes me the happiest out of any directly from the manga and I think about it at least once every 3 days. I’ll list reasons why I personally like it here:
- fluffy Kaneki
- he gives a better haircut than Touka
- he went home and got changed into a different outfit midway through being Out In Town with the boys so he could give her a haircut
- HE WENT BACK OUT AFTERWARDS. Clearly he had other stuff to do that he could have done while he was out, but for whatever reason he needed to give Hinami a haircut Right At That Time. Did they organize an exact time beforehand that ended up not working and required him to go home and then come back outside? Or was he just being impulsive and like “hmmm I feel like giving Hina-chan a haircut right now 😌”?
- Hinami wanted him to study with her afterwards, but he was like “nope absolutely not, I MUST go out and talk to Itori RIGHT NOW. Maybe later :)” which ???????? Slay king
- he has also apparently said “maybe later” a lot of other times, which has me wondering if he’s done this kind of thing before
- his friends called him useful :)<
- Sante (?) suggested that Jiro gets a haircut as well (potentially from Kaneki!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) but Jiro said no :(
I’m not going to try and persuade you that this is the best moment in the entire manga, but you gotta admit this was a cute scene. Which is good contrast for the rest of the manga, and it makes me happy so therefore it is the best.

16, 14 and 20 for the ask game? Thank you!
16. A scene that makes me emotional
In a negative way? Houji and Tatara's death in chap 89 :re
I like the scene where Mr. Yoshimura developed a kakuja and started to kill the investigators at the start of the Anteiku operation. Not only that his speech about "to live is to take" is very good, I can't help but think about this powerful ghoul, who never killed anyone in 10 years, decided to go on a massacre again. But this time is different because for the first time, he killed to protect the people he loved. He used to take people's life just to ensure his own survive, and now he killed as a struggle for the one last time, without seeing his true wish come true. Sorry I'm not good with words but basically this scene gives me chills and sadness at the same time.
14. The character/story arc I find the most compelling
Banjo and co.. One of the best leaders in TG am I right? I like how he is simple-minded but he was always trying his best for the sake of the others. My type is not silly guys like him but he's so likeable. Also the fact that he moved on from Rize to marry Jiro - his avid supporter, loyal follower, best girl material? Absolute good stuff right there and Ishida Sui robbed us from it, again.
20. Fic/fanarts I'd love to see
HouTata
At this point I'll chew any non-couple content with Houji and Tatara in it. That being said, aside from the ships I'm not into, I kinda want to see who would people ship them with. I once read a fic about Arima tried having sex with Houji to forget about his break up with Take and it was kinda interesting.

6 Sentence Sunday
From the upcoming chapter...
Tumblr media
Jiro’s face was full of empathy as she laid a hand on Lisette’s shoulder and gave it a light squeeze. “We know you’re not stupid. Besides – you’re not even from here, right? So how are you supposed to know about ghouls, anyway? I mean – do those things even exist anywhere except here?” She snorted and rolled her eyes, throwing a quick glance at her two brothers.
You can begin reading the fic here on AO3!

Can you ecommend me any good mangas for these days? If you have also hardly anything to read I can recommend you Fire Punch, Monster and Jiro Taniguchi's works. Stay healthy. Je te souhaite une belle journée
Hey Anon. :)) Sure I can, but aside from recommending you all the series I’ve ever posted or reblogged about, I can’t do much if you don’t tell me what genre you’re looking for? :3
As for me, I’m good, thank you so much! I have a lot to read (I haven’t read Fire Punch but I know it’s good and I already read Urasawa Naoki’s Monster). (^3^)/
First of all, if you’re into animes, here’s a list of anime originals that I can recommend. As for new manga to read, my blog is full of different titles, but again it will really depend on what you enjoy reading?
I’ll try though, by sorting them into categories and linking to summaries. :)
The Shonen™ holy trinity + TG
a.k.a Kuroshitsuji, Shingeki no Kyojin, Ao no Exorcist and Tokyo Ghoul. These are titles that you must have seen on my blog if you pass by sometimes, because they’re some favorites of mine.
They’re not similar stories but still, in my opinion, they are titles that I would recommend to someone if they told me that they enjoyed at least one of these four (see here why).
Anyway, they’re all good series with a mysterious plot & plot twists, a good cast with lots of character development. Also TG is over but the other three are still on going. Check the summaries and don’t hesitate to ask if you’re interested!
The Seinen Must-Read
Yet another batch of favorite titles that I’d recommend if you read either of these three: Berserk, Vinland Saga and Blade of the Immortal (I’m putting Urasawa Naoki’s Monster in this category too).
Please watch out for graphic violence sometimes, but these are famous and popular series, known for their incredible writing & artstyle and they’re truly a delight to read.
10/10 would recommend, just make sure to check the trigger warnings first, if there are some things that you really can’t read about.
My weekly series
These are the weekly series that I enjoy checking out: none over, but all very very good and I’d 100% recommend!
Check their summary and see if they can be your next manga to read: Beastars, Golden Kamuy, Chainsawman.
Special rec: if you read & enjoyed Tokyo Ghoul, then you’ll most likely enjoy Beastars. :))
The hilarious series that actually have a serious main plot
You know what I mean: the kind of series that makes you laugh like crazy with short funny arcs and that you don’t necessarily expect to have a real plot at first, but when it turns out that they do… well, it is very powerful . x)
These series are Gintama, Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Cuticle Detective Inaba and Beelzebub.
I’ll add Spy x Family on the list too, which is a year old by now, but which is of the same type and very enjoyable. :)
The slice of life series
Best rec of this category gotta be Chihayafuru without a doubt, but if you enjoy the slice of life & chill genre with sometimes comedy and romance, I also have other titles: Yotsubato, Gokushufudou, Koi wa ameagari no you ni, Shimanami Tasogare, Amaama to inazuma and Barakamon.
I don’t know why but these are series I usually read during summer haha, must be their vibes or something. x))
The hidden gems
Don’t know why I’m grouping them together (again, must be a vibe thing because it makes a lot of sense to me, despite the very different plots), but I sure recommend them: these series all have a mysterious plot, some action, slow-building romance, amazing worldbuilding, hella beautiful artstyle… in short I love them. :D
=> Akatsuki no Yona, Witch Hat Atelier, Song of the long march, Otoyomegatari
Special mention: Blade of the Immortal that I mentioned above could actually fit in this category too (same vibes++), it’s just slightly more violent sometimes.
Did anyone ask for lots of action, as well as sword & gun fights in modern settings?
Because if that’s what you’re seeking, it’d be calling for these series: Gangsta., Black Lagoon and Until death do us part.
For real, if you’re looking for good & dynamic plots, some adrenaline rush and complex characters, these are the series for you!! Bonus: sexual tension or romance are a thing. 👌👌
The psychological thrillers
a.k.a series that mostly deal with uneasy, difficult and controversial themes like sexual & child abuse, depression, suicide tendencies, murder, etc. ://
Please only check these series out if you feel comfortable with their summary, because they can be disturbing: Oyasumi Punpun, Killing Stalking, Sensei no shiroi uso.
Also don’t hesitate to stop reading if it turns out that they’re not your thing!
Others a.k.a series I read when I was younger so I don’t remember them so well, but I do remember enjoying them
Who knows, maybe they’ll be stories you’ll want to check out, haha: The Breaker, Zombie Loan. :))
TL;DR
Tumblr media
…That’s about it? Nah, I’m probably forgetting some titles here and there, but you already have a good list to focus on. Most of these series have a tag on my blog anyway, so feel free to look around. ;)
Also please note that I’m sleep deprived because I worked all night, so I apologize if this is too much and it doesn’t make sense ^^” but I hope you’ll find something worth your time amidst all these titles. :3
Merci d’être passé Anon, je te souhaite une très belle journée également! ^3^ Porte toi bien!!
