Sadly ignored moments from Austen novels:

In Northanger Abbey, Catherine Morland visits Henry Tilney at home in his parsonage. It turns out that, while he's super outgoing, at home his bffs are his terriers and NEWFIE PUPPIES. Relatably, she ends up playing with the puppies and wondering where all the time went.

In Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth is stuck handling the coffeepot at a party. She gets angry at people actually wanting coffee, because she wants to exchange longing glances with Darcy and hate everyone else he talks to. Will he come back for a second cup or not? DUN DUN DUN

In Mansfield Park, Fanny doesn't understand why she keeps thinking about how pretty and charismatic and talented her very morally objectionable rival is, or why she keeps visiting her even though she(Fanny) doesn't like her. She confusedly calls it 'a kind of fascination.'

The eighteenth century's version of Discourse Hell was incessant arguments about the value of modern literature compared to the classics. But by Persuasion, the characters are perfectly aware of living in the Romantic era of poetry and think it's GREAT. (In an addictive sort of way.)

The last villain Austen wrote, in Sanditon, is a proto-dudebro who regards himself as a rakish intellectual, but in reality just plots ineffectually while making inaccurate literary references.

fic in a box 2023 letter

Hello! It’s my first time participating in Fic In a Box, but I’m excited to do it and I hope you have fun creating for it too. I haven���t had time to write as much as I normally do for optional details/letters, but I tried to include a few thoughts on each request in terms of both characters/relationships & other mediums (if not writing related). Below are some general likes and since I’ve requested a lot of my prompts before I’ve linked to some previous letters throughout.

General Preferences & Prompts

I prefer third person to first person fic, though focusing on the POV of one or more characters is fine. I love both fluff and angst, though I like my angst with a happy or at least hopeful ending. When it comes to fluff I like to see characters being happy and sweet/supportive and having fun. With angst I especially enjoy the kind of angst that comes from ~circumstances~ beyond control keeping them apart [as long as those circumstances don't involve one of them being in another relationship] or the angst that comes from a hurt/comfort situation [as long as no one actually dies] Below are some tropes/moments I enjoy:

Fake relationship (in all its forms, especially marriage of convenience and undercover as a couple)

Arranged marriage

Mutual pining (unrequited pining turning into mutual pining also welcome)

Friends to lovers

Hurt/comfort (maybe patching s.o. up after an injury, looking after them when they’re sick or taking home when drunk - emotional h/c is welcome as well as physical)

One partner reassuring the other

Fixing the other character’s clothes (straightening collars, fixing ties)

Clothes sharing/stealing (especially female character wearing male characters jacket or sweater)

One character covering the other with a blanket when they’ve fallen asleep

Domesticity (e.g. cooking together, going grocery shopping, house-hunting, painting their house) either in an established relationship or in the ‘friends’ stage of friends to lovers

Letters / Emails / journal entries / texts

Sleepy snuggles, intentional or accidental

Hand holding (or some sort of hand or touch related moment)

Capers/Heists

‘Bottle episode’ style fic

Outsider POV

5 times/5+1 fic (e.g. five times a character stole the other’s clothes, five times character a looked after character b & 1 time character b returned the favour, five times they secretly held hands & 1 time they did in public, etc.)

In a period drama setting, a few generic things I love for those are men rolling up their sleeves (forearms!), dancing, accidental hand-touches and characters in love not calling the other by their first name until a very meaningful moment.

As I’m okay with Explicit fic for some of my requests here are some smut general likes:

foreplay | foreplay/making out without necessarily leading to penetrative sex | communication | enthusiastic consent | dirty talk | sexting or phone sex | praise kink | competence kink | mutual masturbation | oral sex | wearing partner’s clothes | character showing their partner what they like/sex ‘lessons’ | inexperienced partner reassured by their more experienced partner | established couple experimenting in bed together | fun and flirty | sweet and tender

Also having now read Sanditon I'm even less interested in whatever Andrew Davies has done with it because I know he will have taken the silly little subplot of Sir Edward trying to be Lovelace and taken it somewhere weird and uncomfortably extreme. It's like catnip for him, a spicy yet open ended sexual innuendo he can do whatever he wants with, and that's gonna be a VERY strong nope from me
