things i did NOT like about shadow and bone (netflix):

the darkling looks Old. he's supposed to look the same age as all the other main protagonists. this highlights alina's future of staying the same & young where everyone around her dies. it also blurs the line between good and evil more bc 'oh he's the older bad guy' is just such an easy solve. also while ben barnes is a snack imo the darkling was supposed to have a more alluring, youthful magnetism.

making genya's scars barely a few scratches. she's supposed to objectively have lost her former self perfected beauty!!! this is a thing!!! she doesn't just have some deep scars, she's supposed to look hideous at first sight, where is show adaptation teams' courage to show characters that are supposed to be mutilated as just that???? i promise audiences can survive on literally everyone else on the cast being very stereotypically pretty/handsome 🙄🙄🙄🙄

changing wesper's storyline so that they had a one night stand before canon sets in??? what kind of bullshit is that??? fucking robbing me of the "just girls?" -"not just girls" gay ANgST will they won't they, does jesper like him too, will they ever - BAM. this one i will forgive but i still rly liked it in the books so im a tad sad they didn't manage to include it: that alina has a time where she thinks she is morozova's second daughter's descendant. in many respects she has learned she is Special, and the shame she feels when she realizes this isn't another one of these cases, this isn't a way to finally show her A Path, that in this respect she is ordinary and mal is tied to fate that way, that's just such a good touch.

No matter how many times I get messages telling me that I can't reduce Aegon to "one trait", I will still think that the fact that he is a rapist invalidates any positive qualities he has.

⬆️ THIS!!! And yes we can. A rapist is a rapist. There’s nothing else that justifies that. No trait that changes that. Period. I don’t care what else he does, ever. Team Green is so desperate to ignore that fact.. because that means their fake ‘king’ is an absolute POS.

And then they turn around and say we ignore that crap in the finale, and say it didn’t make sense. BECAUSE IT DIDN’T. Both actors said so. Neither wanted to film it and neither understood it at all.

But Aegon abusing a young girl was a natural progression of how he’s always acted. Especially at Laena’s funeral. It also tracks with the book him as well. That scene made sense. Just like his mum immediately after he did it.. manipulating the poor girl. Both scenes make sense to who the two characters are, neither were OOC.

Daemon never physically harmed any of his wives in the book. It's a fact. He didn't kill Rhea because he wasn't there. He never raised a hand against Rhaenyra, never forbade Laena from returning home. I actually honestly had deja vu when I saw this scene. It reminded me of the scene where the Darkling started choking Alina. Same wtf. Sasha didn't physically attack Alina like that. There was never a scene where he choked her. Do screenwriters these days have some fetish for adding senseless scenes of violence where a woman is choking?

But back - TG stans can defend themselves as they want, but even if we don't look at the series, Aegon in the book is still a sexual predator. He molested maids, there were rumors about his sexual distortion, and there were rumors about having sex with a 12-year-old girl. Aegon continued to sexually abuse women.

And the fact that his fans will say "a maid is a thing, you can't rape her" or "it's not rape, we didn't see him penetrate her" won't change anything. This only shows about these people.

Your take on darklinas is 100% correct. Saw so many darklinas in team black stans and they were shitting on Aegon and Aemond. How can someone like Darkling if they like Rhaenyra as if Darkling wasn't far worse for girls than Aegon. Yes they type whole big paragraph about Daemon did nothing wrong and he never groomed anyone. I am not fan of alysmond but I assure you I don't find them more problematic than Daemyra, Rhaenicent. They said Aemond killed Alys's entire family but I don't think she ever gave fuck about her family.

Playing spectacular pranks on the rival gangs, especially on Pekka Rollins.

Pekka Rollins would come back home to find his home flooded with soapy bubbles. Sebastian would glue a donkey onto the roof of Pekka's club. He'd glue the furniture onto the ceiling. Portraits that had been in the same spots for a long time were suddenly replaced by different portraits. Every wall of the Dime Lions' place would be painted hot pink. Replacing Pekka's shampoo with bright yellow and turquoise dye. As the pranks increased, Pekka was paranoid that one of his ancestors was displeased with him, and the Dime Lions grew scared that it was the spirits of those they killed taking revenge.

I understand that we (you, me, the followers of your blog) are all Team Sasha. We can talk for weeks about how LB did him dirty. But I wish more Darkling fans realized...LB did Alina dirty, too. Alina is a victim of bad writing, and I wish Darkling fans (and Darklina fans especially!) would point cut her some slack. The poor thing was written to want nothing but to be Mrs. Oretsev, Mal's little farm wife, back in Keramzin. We get glimpses of what she could have been book 1 at the Little Palace, and I love exploring that in fanfic. I wish people would talk about that side of things more often. Having her side with a rapist king against the man who wants to save her people is just as absurd and fucked up as Aleksander mutilating Genya.

Alina's main problem is that she's not allowed to grow.

She cannot outgrow her bigotry, her codependency, her shame or blind trust in older female figures. She's not allowed to want anything for herself. Quiet life is Mal's dream. She doesn't learn or heal, because the author won't let her.

None of it will ever change, because once she got called out on her bullshit, LB kicked Alina away like a mangy dog. Kinda ironic- Darklina might not be the endgame, but they truly seem to be soulmates, both done dirty and hated by the very person, whose bills they're paying...

So, without further ado, my Favorite Characters in some of my favourite fandoms, in NO SPECIFIC ORDER...

One

Fandom; Doctor Who. Character; Doctor Who, Tenth Incarnation

David Tennant's run as The Doctor was my favourite. It was a magical combination of a phenomenal actor, a brilliant "companion", and A+ writing team, but it made me fall in love with the character as a whole. Smart, Intellligent, Alien, but also Vulnerable, and ineffably Human.

Two

Fandom; Marvel Cinematic Universe. Character; Tony Stark

And I do mean "Tony Stark", not "Iron Man". Don't get me wrong, Iron Man is cool, and is definitely my favourite Avenger, but it's because it's Tony Stark inside the suit. It's the intelligence of the character that, again, captivates me and as a writer I see so much potential there. If I wasn't so busy with my own writing projects I'd be very tempted to jump back into fandom again just to have a play with Tony Stark's possibilities.

Fandom; Sherlock Holmes. Character; Sherlock

This one had to make the list considering my pen name! I've loved many of the Holmes adaptions, and but there's something specifically about Benedict Cumberbatch's Holmes where you can just see that brilliant mind ticking away behind his eyes.

Four

Fandom; The Mentalist Character; Patrick Jane

I thought the whole Mentalist story was phenomenal, and the backstory for the character of Patrick Jane, genuis. I also love how much Jane is aware that usually he's the smartest person in the room, but is also painfully aware when he's not.

Five

Fandom; Vincenzo Character; Vincenzo Cassano aka Park Joo-hyung

This is a newer addition to my list, and I've only seen the series once so my memory may be a little shaky, but this was another highly intelligent character. A little vicious, a little violent, but at heart also a good person, and I fell a little in love with the character every episode.

And now, let me pivot into my second "type"...

Six

Fandom; Lord of the Rings Character; Strider aka Aragorn son of Arathorn

The OG Fandom Fave, Lord of the Rings got me into fanfiction. I began my online writing career by writing a "10th Walker" fanfiction that never saw the light of day, because I've always found Arwen's character very frustrating. Then the films were released, and the rest is history. But give me Strider over the polished King Aragorn any day!

Seven

Fandom; Shadow and Bone (Netflix) Character; General Aleksander Kirigan aka The Darkling aka Aleksander Morozova

This one is a little more specific because I haven't read the books, so I have ZERO idea how accurate the series is to the original material, but Ben Barnes, specifically, as the Darkling is all my favourite things mixed up into one character. Smart, Intelligent, Damaged, Rough around the edges, In dire need of saving from himself. He's got it all.

Eight

Fandom; The 100 Character; Prince Roan of Azgeda

Another character that I feel had wasted potential! I think they could have done so much MORE with this character but, much like Shadow and Bone, I've not read the books! So it's possible Prince Roan had a bigger, better, for fulfilling part there than the TV Series.

Nine

Fandom; The Witcher Character; Geralt of Rivia

Look. I've loved Geralt forever. I loved him in the CDProjecktRed games. I bought the books, and loved him there, and then Henry Cavill went and made the 100% hands down perfect Geralt on screen. What more can I say?

Ten

Fandom; The Vampire Diaries/The Originals Character; Klaus Mikaelson

Is there a better example of a morally grey character? Not one I've found, to be honest. Klaus has a freaking tragic backstory, and it's completely twisted his worldview. Does he need a good smack upside he head to teach him that his methods are fucked? Absolutely. Does that make me love him any less? Absolutely not!

If Leigh hadn't given Zoya Alina's storyline what role do you think she would've played in the next books? Right now she kinda fills in the gap that Alina left as the chosen one 2.0 but if it wasn't that what do you think would've been her story?

I mean that’s really hard to say because then what is the story going to be about? So much of KoS and RoW hinge on that rehashing. Removing it results in a completely different story— which is something I’d be fine with lol but it’s definitely not a case of like what would have happened instead.

Anyway, I personally love Zoya as more of a foil to the Darkling and filling that role of institutional power vs being placed as an Alina type who’s suddenly come into abilities she does not understand. With how much the original trilogy was about the threat of corruption inherent to power, the KoS duology did not engage with it… at all. I think partially because LB wanted to put the conflict to rest as something Alina like… fixed… to uphold the R&R ending. But it’s too neat, and just uninteresting? And Zoya and Nikolai were Team Morally Dubious from the literal beginning! Bizarre to have them refitted to Lawful Good with zero quandaries whatsoever. And it’s just more meaningful imo to see them working to uphold any sort of greater good, that the choices are taxing and dubious and sometimes very morally compromising.

I think Zoya and Nikolai are really interesting and can be super complimentary in how they operate on different sides of a gray morality spectrum. Zoya is ruthless and selfish, she has limits but she’s somewhat just out for herself and the people she cares about. Nikolai is greater good focused but he operates on a means to an end style of morality that’s literally presented as the starting point to where the Darkling ended up. That is bound to result in many ethical clashes! They have very different values!

Anyway I basically just wanted to see Zoya as the new scary power behind the throne. I wanted her as the new Darkling essentially in terms of being the shadowy figure who is doing the dirty work, and willing to get her hands way dirtier because her limits are different from Nikolai’s and she’s willing to go some fucked up places for her convictions. (The Alina to her Darkling lmao)

Like it’s not expanded on in KoS at all, but I see Zoya as something of a zealot tbh? She starts out as the Darkling’s devout follower, then somewhat grudgingly switches her allegiance to Alina. With both of them out of the way, I think Nikolai would fill that role for her. But not necessarily Nikolai the person, vs Nikolai the king and all of the hopes she’s placed on his rule making a difference. Which is to say, I think her devotion would mean she’s perfectly happy to go behind his back or hurt him in some way to protect him or help his rule. Like she is absolutely the person who would order fucked up assassinations that he might have qualms about without telling him because it’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Arc-wise I also just wanted to see her struggle way more with the Darkling’s ghost and the values he instilled in her. Navigating the aftermath of that kind of disillusionment, and just trying to figure out what she believes in at all.

Anyway in the version of KoS that exists in my head, there is no new magic or world ending stuff. They’ve fully exited the fairy tale. It’s just politics and the miserable business of piecing a country back together after a civil war, and also recovering from the trauma of everything that happened. But while Nikolai’s come out of it determined to Fix Ravka and Deserve being king and to be nothing like his father, Zoya has come out the other side determined to be efficient. And I’d just love to see them hurt each other a lot on the path to understanding each other and trying to grapple with the above questions of morality, and where to draw the line re: selfishness or destroying oneself for a cause. And most importantly shfhff I do not want an answer!

They’re team Morally Dubious! They live on a precipice! There’s no easy answer beyond just trying to do their best at any given moment and make some ethical trade offs and just hope really hard that overall they’re going in the right direction.

Tony Stark

The whole fucking point of this character is that he is an arrogant billionaire arms dealer who realizes that he Kind Of Sucks and consequently spends the next fifteen years trying to Not Suck to mixed but ultimately decent results. On one hand you’ve got the people who act like hes terrible and like I get it I would hate him in real life too but this is a fictional character and you have to admit theres more going here. On the OTHER hand are his legions of fans who insist that he has never done anything wrong ever, he is the smartest nicest little boy who isn’t actually even a little arrogant, and actually everyone who ever went against him even for understandable reasons (incl. very morally upstanding Captain America) is Evil, actually. I say this as a fan of the character: PLEASE you can like this man and have him suck a little at the same time!!!!! I am begging you!!!! Help!!!!

Literally a millionaire who started out manufacturing weapons for the military. Was then chased by the consequences of his actions while not making any sort of reparations. Of course stayed a millionaire the whole time. Then did not communicate with the team about making a sentient "suit of armor" that turned into a massive slaughter bot. People claim that this should be excused as a result of PTSD but is his responsibility to seek out help and he most certainly had access to whatever treatment he could choose as a -in his words- "millionaire playboy philanthropist". Then supported an accords rife with human rights violations that he was of course exempt from - and refused to hear any of the others rebuttals to it - like they were not millionaires and did not have access to entire legal teams that would work to exonerate them. Then exposes Clint's family and farm which he had revealed to Tony in confidence and kept secret from any authority to protect them. Then Tony spends the rest of Civil War trying to straight up murder Bucky - ignoring that it had already been established that Bucky had no agency nor autonomy in his time as the Winter Soldier, in doing so ignored the Accords he had advocated for. He then kidnapped a 16 year old child - who he did not tell why he was taking him - in direct contradiction with the accords and then allowed for Steve's team to be held in a maximum security prison with no trial. He then proceeded to refuse any sort of communication with Steve, resulting in a delay of him defending Earth from Thanos' invasion. After this - despite his failure playing part in the deaths of half the universe, and the child in front of him he treated as a son - he refused to rectify his failure because he had a family now - ignoring the literal entire universe who had lost their families. Upon his death he was treated as a hero and the one who saved the universe, despite his actions being that of hubris.

The Darkling

Okay so this guy is the main bad guy of the series. He made “the fold” this barren wasteland of darkness and monsters dividing the land, causing like hundreds of thousands of people to die. He killed his mom. He psychologically manipulated his girlfriend (like, he caused her to hallucinate and a whole bunch of other crazy stuff). He made one of his followers (a young girl) use her body to slowly poison the king over time. He started a cult. He did a LOT of crazy stuff. However, we do see his backstory of him as a kid, and learn that he did all this in the name of equality, so people would stop torturing and killing the ‘grisha’ or the witches/magic users. Later, he fakes his own death and starts a cult worshipping him and acts as the leader of the cult, going by his old name Aleksander. He is a very complicated character. So tell my why everyone thirsts after him and is like “he did nothing wrong” HELLO?! He is NOT your poor little meow meow he is complies please please don’t sanitize him

Secrets. Nikolai Lantsov has kept many secrets since birth and, throughout the years, has developed a knack for concealing his true feelings. However, his latest secret was not one he'd ever imagined having to keep. A secret that mingled and danced along to the deepest shadows, rather literally. Ever since the fateful encounter with the Darkling's shadow puppets and getting attacked by the Nichevoya, he had grappled with its relentless presence inside him. Its whispers slithered through his mind like serpents, a constant reminder of the darkness lurking within. Yet, he kept his struggle hidden from everyone, afraid of his subjects realizing their king had been corrupted and fearful of hurting those closest to him. He had chosen to shoulder his burden alone and hide from all, especially Mal.

Mal had been his confidant through countless adventures, but Nichevoya was different. It was an enigma, an evil force drawn to his innermost fears and doubts. He feared that their bond might shatter if Mal found out about it. So, he put on a facade of normalcy, his charismatic smile masking the torment within. He carried on the tasks as a monarch with a smile, charming the crowds with his wit as he had always done.

Days turned into weeks, and Nikolai's burden grew heavier. He had always been the protector, the one who shielded others from danger, but now he needed protection. The Nichevoya's power surged at night, its shadowy tendrils creeping into his dreams, twisting them into nightmares. He'd wake up drenched in sweat, heart pounding, and Mal would be none the wiser.

One fateful night, however, Nichevoya's grip grew stronger than ever. Nikolai stood in the middle of his dimly lit room, surrounded by the eerie presence of shadow monsters. Their forms twisted and contorted in unsettling ways, filling the room with whispers of worthlessness and pain. They were slowly causing Nikolai to succumb to the doubt swirling within him. The darkness lured him into their deepest pits, a nightmare that didn't end anytime soon. Nikolai fought valiantly and attempted to push the Nichevoya away, but his strength waned. Whispers filled with despair lingered throughout as he slowly lost himself to the shadows.

Just as he felt the last vestiges of his resolve slipping away, Mal burst into the room. Shock and concern on his face, he took in the surreal scene before him. Without hesitation, he rushed to Nikolai's side, a lit candle in his hands as he tried to light up the shadow-filled room.

"Why didn't you tell me you were going through this?" Mal's voice trembled with a mix of anger and hurt. "You think I can't handle this? We've faced everything together, Nikolai. I thought we were a team."

Scrambling away, Nikolai gave Mal's shoulders a rough push. "Get away," he croaked weakly, his usually shining blue eyes now having a veil of fear over them.

"Nik, snap out of it!" Mal demanded. "You can't fight this alone, for saint's sake. I'm here for you, dammit. We're a team."

Nikolai's defences crumbled, his facade finally giving way to raw vulnerability. "I... didn't want you to be burdened by my problems," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. "I thought I could handle it on my own."

Mal's expression softened, and he touched Nikolai's shoulder. "We've always faced challenges as a team, remember? Your burdens are mine, too, Nikolai. You don't have to go through this alone."

Placing a hand tenderly over the wound on Nikolai's shoulder, the source that caused the nichevoya's presence, Mal murmured gentle words of encouragement, promising to be by his side with his unwavering support.

In an attempt to make the Nichevoya leave, Mal spoke to them. He maintained a steady voice despite the tremor in his soul. However, he remained stable, holding onto Nikolai reassuringly as he tried to ease his struggles.

“Nichevoya,” Mal uttered. "Leave Nikolai be; he has done nothing to you.

The entity hesitated, its shadows flickering uncertainly. It recognized the power that radiated from Mal, rooted in fire and darkness. The Blood of the Darkling flowed through his veins, a legacy he had always struggled to embrace. Now, he would use it to help banish Nichevoya's shadowy reigns from within Nikolai.

Nikolai leaned against Mal and murmured. "They're receding; whatever you're doing, it's working."

Mal gently caressed Nikolai's golden locks. "See, you should've told me; let me help Nik. You don't need to do this alone."

"What would I do without you?" Nikolai sighed.

Mal petted his hair tenderly. "A great king, just a bit lost in the shadows."

The wispy dark tendrils flickered around, their presence becoming less volatile. However, they still seemed to be making Nikolai despair as he let out a choked whimper. "They're always there. Am I even human?"

"Well, I'm supposedly a bird, but you seem to think I'm human, so I think you're fine, dear," Mal muttered.

Nikolai let out a weak chortle, "Thanks… I think I needed that."

Nodding, Mal peered at the Nichevoya and scowled at it. "You were born of darkness, but you stopped controlling the king. He is not yours to control," Mal uttered, his voice resonating with a newfound authority

As if compelled by an invisible force, the Nichevoya began to recede, its form dissipating like smoke in the wind. Mal's lineage, the fiery determination within him, proved more potent than the ancient entity's influence.

With Mal's unwavering support, their combined strength seemed to drive the shadows back further. The room filled with a warm, golden light as their powers melded together, pushing the Nichevoya's influence away. Nikolai felt a sense of relief he hadn't known in weeks, a weight lifting from his shoulders.

As the last traces of the shadows dissipated, Nikolai met Mal's gaze, his eyes shimmering with unspoken gratitude. "Thank you," he said, his voice filled with genuine emotion. "I should've trusted you from the beginning."

Mal smiled, the tension between them melting away. "We're a team, Nikolai. No secrets, remember?"

From that moment on, Nikolai allowed Mal into his struggles. They spent countless hours researching ways to weaken Nichevoya's hold on him. With each passing day, their bond grew stronger, and through the influence of Mal's firebird powers, the nichevoya slowly began to submit and slip into a more docile state.

The more Mal talked to the Nichevoya and showered Nikolai in attention, the more the shadowy tendrils started to slip away. While the shadows still slipped out in times of trouble and unease, the darkness lurking within no longer controlled Nikolai as much as they used to. Nikolai managed to contain Nichevoya's influence with Mal's unwavering care and support. Though it still lingered within him, it no longer controlled him. The nightmares grew less frequent, and the shadow monsters became distant memories.

Nikolai and Mal emerged from the ordeal stronger than ever, their bond forged in the crucible of adversity. They continued to face challenges together, side by side, their unbreakable bond a beacon of hope and a reminder that no matter how dark it gets, they'll always have each other to lean on, and home will always be waiting.
