Taste of Country. A job I failed at that was my fault.
Written by Ashton Deroy I got the criticism from someone that I never take personal accountability on this platform. That I am always blaming my failures on someone else. I will admit Ashtonderoy.com is a little Me-Centric. Must be the fact that I haven’t had another writer in a few years. I promise when I have them… Unlike Bay of Quinte Pride. I will pay that writer. Motive: For my fans even…

sometimes you just need to be honest with yourself and admit that your blorbo probably would have different music taste than yourself
#like some of my favs would not like chappel roan and THATS OKAY#they are not her audience#idk its like a man in his mid thirties probably wouldnt be a swiftie or listen to chappel and thats okay thats the variety of life#also people have different life experiences and cultures than I do which influences taste#someone down south probably listens to way more country than me#DO I THINK MY FAV LISTENS TO POLKA#nah#idk its just theres so much music and diversity out there why limit your characters to what you like????

I like the idea that Jon has really plain taste in food. He thinks pepper and paprika is spicy and he's never even dared to try hot sauce before but people automatically assume he can handle spicy food because he's poc.
#meanwhile Martin has permanent college student taste and has survived mostly on instant noodles quick meal rice and box pasta#they both don't know what a kimchi is and think ramen is nothing more than those packaged stuff you can buy for 50p#these two would be insufferable in an asian country#they'd be at a konbeni in Japan and Martin would spend all his money on fancy cup ramen while Jon would just buy plain sandwich bread

the jury votes have never been so catastrophic i think. so many intelligent, well sung songs that got barely any points but sweden again? for real? for a song i will have forgotten in four months? i am still listening to Trenulețul. i will never forget moldova's entry from last year. i will never forget finland's cha cha cha. never. those songs will stay with me for a whole eternity. i called for slovenia, czechia and finland so many times, you deserved so much better <3
#eurovision 2023#eurovision#esc 23#the fact that the uk got more points than germany and so many other countries#i don't like booing but we all know the crowd was the only one with taste that evening#cha cha cha

During my mini hiatus I fulfilled my dream of visiting Norway! The most surprising thing was hearing Lithuanian being spoken literally everywhere. My mum and I always speak Lithuanian to each other, so it was incredibly bizarre for people to overhear us and then come speak with us, or to have waiters/shopkeepers switch from English to Lithuanian. I’ve never experienced anything like it before, and I had no idea so many Lithuanians live in Norway! I absolutely ADORED this, it made all the places we visited instantly feel like home. Despite all that, I learned a bit of Norwegian and discovered that it’s literally the cutest language. Language learning is absolutely wonderful
#But fr it made me so happy 🥺 I rarely ever get to use my lithuanian so this was such a pleasant surprise!!#When we arrived in Oslo we sat down at a restaurant and were discussing how ridiculously expensive everything was -#- and then the waitress came over and asked (in lithuanian) if we were ready to order 💀💀💀💀#We were struggling to find our hotel and we asked two ladies on a bench who were speaking lithuanian where we could find it !!#At a food festival in Bergen there was a stand for lithuanian chocolate so we were tasting there and had so many Lithuanians come and chat#And soooo many more instances like this !!#Imagine spending 99% of your time not speaking a language outside of the country / without your family#and then all of a sudden everyone speaks this language in the least expected place. Woah!#If I wasn’t so settled in France and if I was a bit less poor I would consider moving to Bergen. I loved itttt !!!!#studyblr#light academia#studyspo#langblr#norway#cottagecore

The thing is. Bad/gross food is rarely a DISH - when food is bad it's because it's been badly made, whether because of skills or available ingredients. but a dish p much only exists recognisably and has a name because someone likes at least one version of it.
which is to say. there isn't really a way of naming a dish, school of dishes or specific food culture and going EW ISN'T THIS DISH UNILATERALLY CONCEPTUALLY DISGUSTING without denigrating quite a lot of people.
like you don't have to like it in any form. but it's eaten and shared because it's good to a not insubstantial number of people when cooked right.
(and I don't really understand how you approach that with total incuriosity when it's a dish you haven't tried like. ARE rocky mountain oysters good? Maybe! I would very much eat some to find out!!!!)
this is actually something the British food poll did in a way the American ones I've seen haven't really - they described how the food they're imagining is, specifically, badly prepared (grey meat and veggies; unseasoned shepherd's pie). which is wildly tipping the scales by calling it British Food but. like. that is an on point definition of why that food is gross.
(this also applies to American chocolate, which like. Broad category but I think most of us understand this refers to low-cocoa high-sugar chocolate, probably with bucolic acid. so we are being invited to imagine Badly Made Chocolate not. the concept of chocolate)
personally I just think it's very rarely a good or funny idea to shittalk how gross any given food culture is. partly because food is important and culturally evocative for most people, partly because it's very...alienating? to be like WHO COULD EAT SUCH A THING? just because you wouldn't, and largely because to be frank it says more about you than about the food that you have so little imagination or curiosity that you can't imagine why a food might be enjoyable to folks who aren't you.
yes this includes jello salad, I would like to try it. ONCE. if it wasn't appealing to someone it wouldn't be so widespread.
#red said#like. as if talking shit about people for eating offal or offcuts particularly hasn't always been hugely loaded in race and class terms#ewww can you believe filipinos eat tripe. can you believe Chinese people eat pig feet?#YEAH I CAN AND YOU SHOULD TOO. Those are normal parts of an animal to eat and it's weird that you think it's weird#but it's also. a really common racist trope right? like. how often does racist rhetoric mention food being 'weird' or 'smelling bad'?#because shitting on someone's food and calling it gross is a really good shortcut to shitting on them and their cultures#implying they're dirty or animalistic or cruel or undiscerning or have bad taste#this isn't crying RACISM AGAINST WHITE PPL btw#just saying. maybe in general we should shut the fuck up about finding entire schools of cooking gross#and it's interesting you know. bc Americans in the notes of the American food posts recognise there are race and class sensitivities there#but not that there might be similar sensitivities around mocking another country's food

We did not in fact win that race.
The World Championship in Biathlon 2024 just finished up today! Congrats to France for being the best nation, Norway for getting the most medals, and Sweden for taking their first ever gold medal in a biathlon world championship 🥳✨
Sometimes the Norwegian commentators just say something so weird I need to draw it
#hetalia#ibu!talia#aph norway#aph sweden#hws norway#hws sweden#söta bror#Sweden is the only country we can bond over winter sports with in the Nordics#occasionally Finland as well#but it's something different when we just interview swedes and we can talk Norwegian/Swedish with each other#and also the rivalry#it is so intense#in cross-country the Swedes made a fake horror movie clip where the monster was one of the Norwegian athletes#I haven't watched it - but apparently it was in veeeery bad taste#I imagine both Norway and Sweden go to these winter sport events together and at the end of it they can't stand to even be in the same room#ahhhh I missed doing these comics - I should do more of them in the future#and we do love some söta bror shit

Fun fact: pomegranate has continued to be associated with death in greek culture even now in modern times. We have a desert called "koliva" that has existed since ancient times that we serve at funerals and memorials, and pomegranate is one of the main ingredients. It symbolizes the soul of the dead and the glory of heaven.
#other orthodox christian countries have the same tradition#all 9 of its ingredients symbolize something#and it tastes so good#text#crispy#random knowledge#greece#ancient greece#greek culture

Imagine that you write children's books for a living. Every now and then, you have to come up with wacky ideas that might entertain children, and managed to have a moderately successful and long career.
One day, you get a strongly worded letter from a "disappointed fan" detailing what you got wrong in a decades old book of yours. One you remember struggling to write; something you spent nights awake to try to come up with fun tastes for the monsters a partner illustrator kindly supplied - although unhelpfully so. Why the heck did he give you a goblin for this?
Anyway, you were actually proud of that one so this letter obviously pisses you off. It's only recently that respected papers about what monster cuisine is have been coming out, anyway. Where they expecting you to actually have tasted monsters?
You want to send an angry reply. Except you notice Melini's Royal symbol in the letter, and it gives you a pause.
#dungeon meshi spoilers#a while later you visit the country and for some reason the court magician hates you even more than the disappointed king#that one royal advisor by the throne is staring daggers at you. this is starting to actually look dangerous#kinda unrelated but is this how I realize the gourmet manual only talked abt taste and laios learned how to kill monsters in other ways?#dungeon meshi#dm thoughts

All the guys love Elvis, i think you’re legally required to like country there I can also see them as enjoying southern rock etc. specifically outlaw country.
