With S4 confirmed, I have a theory about SydCarmy
The below will contain some spoilers so proceed at your own risk.
It is now clear The Bear cast and crew wrapped up filming for s3 a while back, and they are now filming s4. With that, we have seen Molly and Will on set, so here’s my theory:
In s3, Luca will make an appearance. As Carmy goes deep into his own head, Sydney will need a new partner: Luca. As partners, Sydney and Luca will be close, in the kitchen and outside the kitchen. Will was spotted filming outside Sydney’s new apartment, so yes, Luca and Sydney will get it on. As SydLuca get it on, Carmy will stay in a relationship with Claire, because to him and everyone else, Claire is great. This means that s3 will end with Sydney with Luca, and Carmy with Claire.
As Molly was spotted filming recently, Claire and Carmy may still be together at the start of s4, so unfortunately for us, the slow burn is going to burn very slow. After Carmy works out what he wants and doesn’t want, and Claire realizes that it’s never been about the restaurant, it’s always been about Sydney, Carmy and Claire will break up for good. At the same time, Luca and Sydney will go through a break up, so FINALLY Sydney and Carmy will be single again. After beating around the bush for a few months, they will get together. SydCarmy are endgame, but we will have to wait for s4 to see it.

Damn, this will be Ayo, Jeremy and the rest of the cast when SydCarmy happen. I’m so excited.
See guys TV/film people lie

It’s a common practice in the business to keep the audience engaged same as the use of cliffhangers. So idk when we started to take the cast and crews word as Bible.

the payoff for this love triangle shit better be good
a Sydcarmy vs Claircarmy rant
So, to ramble here, I am starting to wonder what place romance has in the overall plot of The Bear as a show and, by that, what function it will execute. I am going to write about some alternatives that I can predict.
The overall purpose of the show is to heal Carmy, or to put Carmy on a path when self-healing is the only option. He is a sinking ship that has been treating his holes with tape instead of acknowledging the "bear" trauma. At the present of the show, the bear is still in a cage.
So, what paths of healing romance could offer Carmy? Love and loving others is essential to learning to be better versions of ourselves and achieve happiness.
Option one: ClaireCarmy
Yeah, we are here again. Stick with me after the next paragraph so I can dispute what I am about to write.
I must admit, if I take the most superficial parts of the show's structure so far, Claircarmy seems to be the clear endgame. What we are seeing with them could be categorized in one of the most used tropes in romance: the "I am not good enough to receive love" trope, in which a character is afraid of being loved, so they push away the romantic interest until they heal their wound, they make a love confession, and they get back together. I know a movie/show came to mind. We have seen it a dozen times. Even what Claire told Tiff "If something good happens to him, he would blame me." We see Carmy thinking about her and missing the relationship they had. He even declares her as his peace. It would make sense that this is a story about a girl who wanted to love a boy and a boy who was too wounded to accept that love. It would make a clean ending for Carmy to go to therapy, learn to accept love, and reconcile with Claire, who has all the attributes of someone who would fall in love with a broken person.
The grenades are in the way.
NOW, the show has been planting grenades for option one to feel like "the right one" even if our protagonist seems to think it is the case. There are Claire's obvious red flags of course, behavior that looks naive but has some manipulative undertones. The fact that she is written like a woman with no personality, or at least no personality outside helping people in pain (Carmy included). She still talks about her patients as subjects, and there is a theory in the sydcarmy fandom that she may feel powerful or valued only in a position of taking care of people who cannot fend for themselves. There is also the fact that she is not a good doctor (she almost killed a patient over a very preventable mistake). Her comments of setting things on fire being cool while Carmy is afraid of setting himself on fire is still, for me, the biggest red flag.
My theory is that Storer just didn't want to show people with depression to accept love but to be wary of the love we accept while we are still stuck in our old ways of thinking. It is true that even at your worst, you may find yourself in relationships that keep you that way, but the relationships may feel good, so we have a hard time moving away from them. If that is the case, Storer, I promise to never commit blasphemy on your church.
The SydCarmy option.
I am not going to repeat myself. They read each other's minds. They can actually give each other real advice and support (While Carmy kissed Claire after she admitted malpractice). They make each other better, while Claire keeps Carmy as broken as he is (never apologize, you can pretend to be someone else at a party).
Sydney brings him actual peace and self-understanding. It is actually very important to me that they made Sydney say she has difficulty keeping with Carmy at his worst because she is not a mind reader. But at this point, there is no doubt in my mind that she has feelings for Carmy, or that she at least has felt the sparkles of what it would be love in the future.
The payoff.
I swear to god, the next season better provide clarity on all of this because, at this point, it is too much. There is no way you give so many clues in the background for one ship and pursue the other in the front.
My worst fear, which is actually really possible, is that the show wants to concentrate on the "being stuck in the past" narrative so that all the elements for the future are there, but we won't act on them until the end of it. So Carmy can kill all his bad habits, the self-isolation, aggressiveness, depression, self-harming tendencies (fire), and Claire, and THEN, he can open his heart to Sydney. It is obviously not what many of us want to see; maybe this was never a love story, but an "unstuck yourself from the mud" story.
I wish the progress of the love story you actually want to tell (Sydcarmy) would progress with the show's actual plot (Carmy's mental health) a little more. Otherwise, the payoff is never going to feel quite like one. You may have done too much of a good job misguiding your audience, and then it will feel like a change of direction, like a plot twist at the end of a mystery novel, but that rarely works in romance subplots.
I know the clues were there, but your narrative seems to ignore them so far, making it feel more like gaslighting.
Anyhow, thank you for hearing me ramble.

Sydney's tower moment #Flimsywalls
And Carmy's.
So, as I mentioned here, Emanuel knows her walls are getting flimsier. And on shipping terms that is actually a good thing.
BUT
On Storer's terms, that may ALSO symbolically mean that Syd is about to come crumbling down and that her relationship with The Bear (both, restaurant and chef) is collapsing, which is what S3 was all about, basically.
I am team Syd threatening to quit Carmy's ass and THAT being the wake-up call he needs to turn it all around, that being said there is a chance that she actually does quit on him and then comes back, -as she usually does- in which case I wish she did that because he crawls and begs and rips Shapiro's head off in the process. Still, in either case, there is NO DOUBT IN MY MIND about Syd staying at The Bear and winning a star there, by Carmy's side, even maybe a JB award too. I'm basing this theory on the fact that they both hit rock bottom in 03x10 but I see that as a BREAKTHROUGH, not a breakdown.
Since Syd is clearly into tarot symbology as her 3 of swords ink indicates
I started thinking outside the box of the flimsy walls analogy I already went over in previous posts, so the image of a building collapsing came to mind, which immediately reminded me of the tower card, and turns out that the meaning of it fits the "Crying game" moment aforementioned.
I really don't wanna dig into it's meaning that deep because I think the superficial meaning fits perfectly, so there's no need to go deeper.
"This card is a powerful catalyst for change and personal transformation. You are being offered a fresh start and a chance to build stronger foundations in your life. This card brings a major life shift and the knowledge that things will never be the same."
How right on the money is that, right?
So both Carmy and Syd are at that evolutionary point of their journeys, they are mirroring each other in a very fucked up way, sure, but also... SOULMATISM.
Syd is at her breaking point and no matter what she chooses, nothing will be the same between Carmy and her after she makes her choice, and the very foundation of their whole relationship is being shaken and will have to be reformulated, re-built in a different and better way because status quo has no chance of being preserved.
"It has to get good or go away".
That's the tower energy that card represents, alongside the traumatic way in which events unfold, where the person feels is no longer in control, and that all those changes, no matter how necessary are being forced upon them. It's harsh.
Again, walls. Sydney is all about walls and for her to make the changes she has to make → (Their Synchronicity) she needed to go through her own tower moment. Carmy also went through his, exactly in the same season → (The end of Carmy). There's absolutely no coincidence in that.
"This card symbolizes the foundation of ashes in which the phoenix is born. The lightning-struck Tower is associated with chaos and destruction of boundaries."
Carmy was her lighting. And in a way, she was his too.
Love is an act of mirroring.
According to the tower card, after this collapse of walls, chaos and destruction, comes the "Phoenix moment". So, we're good. Don't dispair. She's gonna be just fine.
Sydcarmy will be just fine.

This reminds me that Claire can’t be trusted because what does she mean by “you never need to apologize”? Like, girly pop, be for real.
"Sorry" is important to Carmy, and even when Syd told him not to say it, he said it anyway. He introduces Sorry in ASL to Sydney, a word that means so much to him that he doesn't want it to get lost in their relationship.
Claire dismisses his apology, but in the next episode, Syd does the same for a different reason, and he doesn't accept the rejection.
Sorry matters more to him than I love you, because I love you was always meant to dismiss feelings, but Sorry is used to express and accept what occurred between two people. He can say sorry for the sadness in the moment or for what he's done that he knows hurt the other person.
It matters to Carmy because of his mother and Mikey, two people struggling with addiction and who never had the chance to make amends.

Aspirations pt. 4
Sydcarmy Masterlist
Full Masterlist
Menu planning, avoidant behaviour, protective Richie and jealous Carmy, anyone? Yes, I busted this chapter out very quickly because I couldn't wait to write it 😂 I'm happy with this one, I think. Hope you are too! Our chapter count has gone up - why tf did I think I could do this in 3?! 😅 - I'm pretty sure it's going to be 6 in total.
~~~~~~
“What’s next?” Nat asked later that day from the dining table while Syd moved the previous plate away.
“Oysters.”
“Nooo! Please no.”
“You said we could give it a shot?” Carmy looked hurt,
“I think we’re going to lose too much prep time shucking them and making them presentable.” Syd countered.
“We’ll time it. Nat, stopwatch?”
“On it. I’m kinda leaning with Syd though. Does anyone actually like them?”
“I do.” They both replied, “trust me, I know you’ll like these ones.” Syd continued.
“Show me why you can’t shuck them?” Carmy asked Syd, handing her a knife and an oyster. She looked wary but made sure the crustacean was secure in her hand and positioned the knife, “Ok, you’re going in at the wrong angle, may I?” He came close to her, head bent towards hers. She went to hand him both items but he shood her hands away, “no, you’re gonna do it, Chef.” His hand covered hers, holding the oyster with her and his other hand joined hers on the knife. He changed the position of the blade and guided her to push the point of the knife into the hinge of the oyster. His hands cupped hers as they heard a small pop and the oyster opened up. “See, you did it.”
“I think you did it,” she replied softly, neither of them moving apart. Behind Syd, Nat cleared her throat.
“Aren’t these supposed to be an aphrodisiac?” She asked. Carmy sprang away from Syd.
“Uhh yeah, it’s cos they look like… well. Y’know. Anyway, you’re gonna try this and I promise you’ll like it.” Syd smiled seasoning the opened oyster with a dressing of cilantro, lime and ginger she’d already prepared and finished it off with a drizzle of sriracha. Next to her, Carmy had lined up a couple of others he'd opened up and she seasoned those as well. “Ok… so just like, swallow it whole.” She handed the small plate to Nat who held it up for a better look.
“Swallow it whole? Ok, now you’re just fucking with me cos I mentioned the whole aphrodisiac thing?” Syd shook her head,
“Nope. I swear, you gotta just go for it.” Nat and Carmy both tried theirs at the same time.
“Are you fucking real, Sydney?” He muttered, “that was insane.”
“You’ve converted me.”
“Cool. They’re still not going on the menu.” Syd laughed,
“They have to!” Nat protested.
“How about if we did it with scallops instead?” Carmy suggested, “We can’t not use this dressing, Syd.” She tried the last oyster for herself.
“Yeah… that dressing is the shit. Scallops could work. I’ll get some from the fish guy tomorrow and try it?”
“Heard, Chef.” He replied with a small smile.
“Do I still need to time you?”
“No,” Syd went to speak up as Carmy said,
“Yes, please do.” He turned to Syd, “We have some left, it’s good practice.”
“Yeah, good practice for something I’m never doing again.” She teased.
“We’ll see about that. Race?” Syd’s eyes lit up. She loved it when he was like this, and it was becoming more and more of a regular occurrence since The Bear had opened. He had the same intensity and unwavering gaze, but he was playful and mischievous. She’d finally seen him the way Nat and Richie had known him before. Quick witted - often with an under the radar dirty joke that had her, Richie and Tina sniggering into their prep work while Marcus and Gary looked bemused.
“Fucking fine. I’m going to own you, bitch.” He divided up the remaining oysters between them and handed her the knife back. He found another from the drawer,
“Doubt it, Chef. Nat, you judging? Don’t let her fuckin’ cheat.”
“You’ll pay for that Berzatto, I do not cheat.”
“Alright you two, let’s go before Pete gets back with Mikey,” Nat came to stand on the other side of the counter so she could see them both standing side by side, elbows brushing. “What’s the winner get?”
“Oysters on the fuckin’ menu.” Carmy decided.
“Nuhuh, that’s fine if you win… If I win though, I want you to make the dish I had in New York.” Confusion followed by shock crossed his face,
“Fuckin’ coming back to that after I’ve kicked your ass.”
“Please,” she scoffed, “let’s get this over with so you can cook for me again.” She rolled her eyes.
“You both ready?” Nat interrupted. “Three, two, one - go!” Syd snatched up her first oyster and, using the technique Carmy had just shown her, opened it without delay. She put each one she opened onto the plate between them, watching Carmy from the corner of her eye she guessed that he was maybe half a second ahead of her.
“Best meal I’ve ever had, y’know.” She said, watching his knife falter just briefly before he got it back under control.
“Good to know. Stop tryin’ to distract me.”
“I would never do that,” she grinned down at her oysters, taking advantage of his time slip.
“You’re always a distraction.” This time her hand stuttered. She caught herself just before the knife made contact with the palm of her hand but it was too late, she’d lost time. Carmy threw his last oyster onto the plate and dropped his knife. “Done.” Syd finished the moment he spoke.
“Ding ding! Carmen Berzatto, congratulations.” Natalie faux bowed to him. She picked up her pen, “so, oysters on the menu then?”
“Nah, we’ll do scallops instead.” He turned to Syd, “It’ll still work. We’ll do it like a -”
“Ceviche,” they said in unison.
“Thank you.” Syd acknowledged.
“Fucking weird.” Nat muttered, rolling her eyes. As she spoke, Pete came through the front door with Mikey’s stroller, “Ok, that’s my cue for a nap. See you guys in an hour. Don’t kill each other in my kitchen. Or anything else.” They dressed the oysters and cleared up before sitting down to eat.
“Mmm. Holy shit,” Syd moaned, “I’m putting this dressing on everything from now on.” “It’s fire, Chef.”
“Thank you.” They fell into a comfortable silence until, “check your plum sauce.” She reminded him.
“Fuck, yes. Thanks.” He toyed with the heat and sat back down next to her, looking over the menu. “It looks good.” He noted, nudging her slightly.
“Yeah I think so. Just the right amount of festivity.”
“Exactly. Seasonal.” She could feel his eyes on her as she made some notes for the soon-to-be scallop dish. “When were you in New York?” He asked at last.
“A long time ago. I saved up and blew everything on a few days there. Ate everywhere I wanted to.”
“I didn’t know.”
“I know you didn’t. I wasn’t lying the day I met you when I said I knew of you. That meal changed my fucking life.”
“Mine too, I guess,” he took her wrist gently and pulled her up, “here, try this?” He took her to the stove top and gathered a spoon of the plum sauce. Unable to hand it to her without it spilling, he brought it to her mouth instead. She held his gaze as he placed the spoon in her mouth. There was something in his eyes that she couldn’t quite decipher but she could feel the heat spread from her cheeks down to her toes, could feel her thighs clench together in desperation. She was eternally grateful that she could easily hide a blush, but she was certain he could sense how her breathing changed. His fingers brushed against hers as she took the spoon from him, the taste of plum and winter spices exploding on her tongue.
“Fuck me.” She mumbled in surprise, eyes still on him. He arched an eyebrow, “the sauce. The sauce is really fucking good.” She confirmed quickly, realizing how closely they were standing.
“Doesn’t need anything?” Her eyes flicked down to his lips as she subconsciously bit her own lightly. Her heart threatened to burst out of her chest. She could feel herself leaning in unintentionally, her body automatically seeking him out. From his pocket, his phone rang and she turned on her heel instead and took the spoon to the sink with a shake of her head,
“Doesn’t need anything.” She maintained as he let the phone ring, still watching her. “You gonna get that?”
“It’s Claire.” He said, a little sadly. She nodded,
“You should take it. I’m gonna get some air.” She picked up the nearest outer layer, his sweater from earlier in the morning, and slipped out of the front door as she heard him answer,
“Hey babe,” She closed the door with a quiet click behind her and sat on the front door step with her head in her hands. What the fuck was she doing? What the fucking fuck was she fucking doing? She took deep breaths but all it did was remind her of earlier in the morning, wrapped in his arms with his hand on her back and hers on his heart. The heart he’d all but given to someone else. She needed to get a grip before she did something really fucking stupid. Co-workers did not share beds and spoons and eye fuck each other over a plum fucking sauce. She twisted her braids into a bun and secured it, welcoming the cool air on the back of her neck. She shouldn’t have picked up his damn sweater again, he was invading her senses in every single way and it was all becoming too much. She wasn’t sure how much distance she could keep anymore, he just kept drawing her in. She heard the door click again and he sat next to her. “You good?” He asked. She nodded, not trusting herself to speak. Surely he’d felt it too? Was he just as affected, or was she imagining it? She cleared her throat,
“This needs to stop.” She said firmly, not bothering to confirm what this was.
“Yeah,” he agreed.
“Yeah.” She got up, went back inside and tried to keep herself from falling back into his orbit for the rest of the day.
*
It had been weeks. Syd maintained an appropriate distance at all times. She tried to keep someone between them, took a full step back from her station whenever he came over to taste her dishes, tried to look anywhere except at him. It was fucking hard. Her eyes were drawn to him in every room, every time. She sought him out even when she didn’t mean to. And fuck she missed him. She occasionally wondered if he was finding it just as difficult, but pushed it to the back of her mind. They weren’t doing anything differently, she reasoned. They were still friends, still co-workers, still partners. She took a plate of pasta into Natalie in the office, Nat looked up at her in concern,
“Hey, you ok honey?”
“All good, Chef.”
“You just seem a little… distant recently?”
“Just getting on with work.” At that, Richie burst into the office,
“Syd, if he asks, you gotta say no.” She looked bemused.
“Say no to who?”
“The fish guy. The pot wash at the taco place said he wants to ask you out.”
“The fuck? Why are you getting your information from the pot wash at the taco place?”
“We smoke together, trade intel.”
“About me?”
“About everything, Syd. Jeez, focus! The fish guy wants to ask you out, but you gotta say no - ok?”
“Not ok, Richie - why should she say no?” Nat stepped in,
“Cos he’s a fuckin’ dickbag that’s why!”
“Who’s a dickbag?” Carmy asked, coming in and dropping into a chair.
“The fish guy.”
“Oh fuck yeah, he’s a fuckin’ dickbag. Why do we give a shit though?” He asked, dragging a hand through his hair.
“Cousin, he wants to ask Syd out, I gotta warn her off him.”
“He wants to do what?”
“I know, right? Fuck that. He’ll lose his fuckin’ teeth if he tries.” Said Richie, still affronted that he wasn’t being taken seriously. Nat and Syd exchanged glances.
“Look, if Syd wants to say yes then she can say yes -”
“But -”
“But nothing. You will both just get your heads out of your asses and leave this the fuck alone, do you hear me?” She warned them.
“Syd, he’s a fuckin’ dickbag.” Carmy said, his voice low, something unrecognizable in his tone.
“Surely that’s for me to decide?”
“Woah, what’s happening here?” Claire squeezed into the room which was now at full capacity.
“Ugh,” Nat groaned, “these two are being ridiculous. The fish guy wants to ask Syd out -”
“Well, that’s good?” Claire asked,
“No it’s fucking not.” Richie and Carmy replied in unison.
“He’s a dickbag.” Carmy muttered.
“A total fucking bag of fucking dicks.”
“Can we stop with the phrase dickbag, please?” Nat pleaded.
“Look, I appreciate the concern guys, but I am capable of deciding for myself whether to date someone. I don’t… I don’t get why we have five fucking people in this office getting into my personal life?” Syd held her hands up.
“He’s not after a date,” Richie grumbled. “He’s after a quick fuck. Does it all the time at all the restaurants in town.”
“S’true.” Carmy confirmed, looking at his hands.
“He ‘dates’ these women for a while and then just fuckin’ ditches them. Waitresses, chefs, fuckin’ anyone who’ll say yes.”
“Have you considered that that might suit Syd?” Nat asked. Syd caught her eye and frowned with a small shake of her head, Nat shrugged.
“Syd’s better than that,” Carmy said, “you’re better than that.” He finally looked up at her, still standing by the desk.
“Again, that’s for me to decide.” She pointed out.
“I think you guys are, like, really invested in Sydney’s sex life. Don’t you think that’s a bit weird?” Claire asked.
“No.” Richie and Carmy replied together, again.
“Yes it is, actually.” Syd agreed with Claire. “Neither of you should care who I’m dating or fucking or whatever the fuck I’m doing in my spare time.”
“We’re looking out for you, cuz!” Richie’s voice rose again. She didn’t have time to pause when she noticed Richie call her cousin,
“This is a really weird way of looking out for me, Richie.” She suggests, “all I have to go on is that he’s a dickbag who dates around a lot?” She saw Carmy shoot Richie a look,
“Well, yeah - isn’t that fucking enough?”
“Richie, you sound jealous! Do you want to date Syd?” Claire teased.
“Fuck, no!” Carmy and Richie both shouted. “No offense,” Richie followed up.
“Ok, this is getting really fucking stupid. The guy hasn’t asked me out, I haven’t even seen him for weeks, and I have no idea what I’d say if he did ask me, ok? You,” she pointed at them both, “do not get to tell me who I can date or who I can fuck, understood?” Syd glared.
“Yes, Chef.” Richie mumbled. She looked at Carmy, his face unreadable.
“Carmy?” Claire asked on Syd’s behalf,
“Yeah, of course. Nothing to do with me, right?” He asked with a shrug, anger creeping into his voice.
“Cool, so now that we’ve established that Syd’s free to date whoever she wants, we getting out of here for a couple of hours?” Claire asked Carmy, rolling her eyes with a smile to Syd and Nat.
“Sure, I’ll just get my stuff. Meet you out front?”
“Yeah. Uhh… great catch up, guys. Syd, good luck!”
“Yeah, thanks. See ya, Claire.” They all waited for the sound of the swing door before speaking again.
“This is really fucked up.” Nat muttered, digging into her pasta. “Not this, this is gorgeous. This pair of fuckos.” She pointed with her fork at Carmy and Richie.
“I’m outta here for a bit,” Carmy made his way to the lockers and Syd followed.
“The fuck was that?” She hissed, aware of Richie and Nat in the office.
“Nothin’. Like you said, s’not my place to tell you who you can date.” He shoved his arms into his jacket, “or fuck. Right?” He added, his voice laced with anger.
“Correct. Because you have a girlfriend, remember? A friend who is a girl? So you shouldn’t care what I do.”
“Or who?” She glared at him. She tried to disguise her hurt with anger, but she couldn’t stop the stray tear on her cheek,
“Fuck you, Carmy.” She jabbed his chest. “Fuck. You.” She spat out, full of venom. He stilled, leaned into her hand.
“Yeah. Sure, Syd. Fuck me.” He reached up to brush the tear away with his thumb and slipped past her to Claire. She hesitated before going back to the office, trying to get her emotions under control so she didn’t cry in front of Richie or Nat.
“I’m sorry sweetheart,” Richie started as she walked back in. “Fuck, sorry. Can I call you sweetheart?” She nodded a little.
“S’ok. I know you meant to fucking protect me or some shit, I get it.” He met her forehead with his own,
“Yeah. But I was an asshole and I’m sorry.”
“Thank you, Richie.”
“Please say no if he asks you. I’m too fuckin’ old to be fightin’ toddlers in the fuckin’ street, huh?” She offered a brief smile.
“I’ll bear it in mind.”
“Ok. I gotta fuckin’ burn one. That shit was awkward as hell when Claire came in and Carmy was making fucking goo-goo eyes at you.”
“Fuck off Rich.” He laughed, patted her shoulder sympathetically and made for the back doors. Syd sat heavily in the chair Carmy had sat in, and slumped down while Nat quietly finished her pasta.
“You ok?” She asked.
“Not really.” She rubbed her hands over her face with a big sigh.
“So you guys are just going to… what? Either be ignoring or fighting each other for the foreseeable future?”
“I guess so.” Syd shrugged, anger building again. “He has no right to tell me who I can date.”
“I know.”
“It’s nothing to do with him. Nothing at all to do with him.”
“I agree.”
“Whatever the problem is, it’s his problem to fix. Not mine.”
“I hear you.”
“What do I do, Nat?”
“You live your life, babe. You do whatever the hell you want and he can go to fuck.”
“Yeah. Yes. You’re right. It’s nothing to do with him.” Syd nodded.
Personally, the trailer made me feel more optimist about them than I was 24 hours ago. The scene of Sydney and Pete told me everything I need to know: She’s family now, and Carmy would do everything for her because he loves her. The Claire scenes are deceiving and they would make you believe that they are a significant part of what will happen in s3 when in reality they’re just a few drops in the ocean.
We know Sydney and Carmy are parallels of each other, so this may mean that Luca becomes Sydney’s projection of Carmy in s3.
Claire is Carmy's projection of Sydney.
Costuming is one of the most straightforward ways to tell an audience what a character is like and what their role is. Claire's costuming choices show how she was literally just a clear blank slate for Carmy to project Syd onto. So come peel this onion with me.
When he first sees her after being away from him for a while she wearing a green jacket, who else famously has worn a green puffer jacket all throughout the series and when she reconnected with Carmy after she left?
When he takes Claire on that post office trip drive through Sydney's favorite UPS route, Sheridan Road, she's wearing a brown jacket which looks very similar to the kinds that UPS drivers like Sydney would wear.
When Claire is at the party with him trying to get with Carmy and pursue a new relationship, she just had a denim jacket. Which we have also seen Sydney wear a denim jacket around him when they were trying to start a new relationship aka partnership together by building the new restaurant.
And then we see her white button shirt, dark pants, and the blue denim jacket when Carmy takes her back to the restaurant, which is basically all Carmy saw Syd wearing for most of the time while at the restaurant when she was in her white button down, dark pants, and blue apron.
When he cooks for Claire we see her for the first time in a tank top at the exact same time we see Sydney the most undressed she's ever been in a bra.
When she's in his kitchen she's in his white t-shirt she tries to have a somewhat vulnerable moment with him. She asks him what he is thinking about when he's clearly stressed and he deflects to just complement her. Later when he is with Syd in her white t-shirt in their kitchen at The Bear, he is vulnerable with her about his mother and tries to get her to be vulnerable with him and she finally tells him about her mom dying.
At Friends & Family night is the one time we see her dressed in the most uniquely herself way in a black dress, and she looks like she's ready for a funeral. Which it essentially was the death of her and Carmy's relationship that night. We also know that this is what Sydney will be doing at the start of Season 3, going to a funeral with Carmy. RIP Claire. (yes i know it's marcus' mom but the metaphor is still there and this is still a comedy after all)
Claire has very little identity of her own because Carmy never bothers to know her like he knows Syd. When Claire is on her own she's always in her scrubs, because he doesn't have much else of an image of he besides the fact that she's a doctor now. But he knows Syd well enough to know the exact designer brand she likes to wear and make her a custom jacket.
He knows about Syd's mom dying because he repeatedly asks her about her family and parents without even knowing them. Claire told him about her cousin dying and he basically said "damn that sucks" even though he knew him personally. He knows about Syd's struggles with her job history through catering and fine dining. Claire told him about her life as a doctor and the only thing he came out with was that it was a time intensive job and that he thought she liked taking care of people helping people by helping to fix them. Which is exactly what he tells Sydney he notices about her later on. She likes to take care of people and to fix things like she tried to fix the restaurant.
He didn't give af about Claire's life or personality, he just wanted to project Sydney's onto it. Carmy wanted to want to be with Claire, because everyone around him told him it was what he should want from Mikey to Fak to Richie. So he chose to see and project as much of Syd, who he already knew deep down he liked but was too scared to pursue, on to Claire. That's why he took her on that drive and why he made her the Sydney's pasta recipe that he knew Sydney already liked. Because he doesn't bother getting to know Claire, he just assumes Sydney's identity on to her. And what he did come to know and doing with her that was her choice, like going to a party with drunk friends, only ended up associating her with his alcoholic mother and his brother at their Christmas party.
And in the end he still realized he couldn't just replaced Sydney in his mind with her.
#wow just wow#I kinda feel sorry for Claire here#SydCarmy is so endgame#sydcarmy i will never doubt you again#the bear meta
This is the confirmation I needed
This still just confirmed that something very intimate will happen between Sydney and Carmy because why aren’t the two leads sitting together? Make it make sense. It is as if they are trying so hard to make sure that we don’t see their interactions. Would the interactions reveal something? Maybe, but I now know for sure that SydCarmy will get it in. Maybe not sex or even a kiss, but someone will say, “I love you. I’m in love with you,” in the last episode. SydCarmys, we’re so back.
Vanity Fair thought they did something with that article, didn’t they?! What happened to honest journalism? We used to be a proper country.
This is so funny to me, because what?!
We’ve all seen that Carmy and Claire do not belong together for multiple reasons, but I’ve always wondered why people don’t want to see Carmy with Sydney when they are clearly IT for each other. Well well well, this commenter on instagram provided some insight into the anti-SydCarmy train. Some of the antis would rather have Carmy be alone and miserable than be with Sydney. Some people are just not serious.
This may be the most well-articulated post I have seen about CarnyxSyd dynamic in the series overall. It made me cry I love it so much. It is so true they get something from each other they don't have in any other place.
If you were to remove the sydcarmy chemistry and the symbolism, this post has illustrated the reason why I think sydcarmy is the only pairing that makes sense in the long run.
Regardless of how much the Claire narrative was push in our faces this season, the truth is they have only shown her providing “confort” for Carmy, and shots of her being a doctor seem to want to illustrate her desire to heal broken people, people like Carmy.
But I don't think saying Claire likes to help broken people is the same as saying she will be able to help Carmy specifically. First of all, that is unfair; a person with a profession in healthcare may not find the energy to do that in her personal life because it is obviously a draining mental state. Now, it was my impression that the show wanted to tell us how Claire processes all of this, with very cringeworthy scenes.
Claire has mostly provided comfort to Carmy, she seems to want to emotional regulate him and feels pride in thinking she can do it. The “don't ever apologize” followed by Carmy “wow” and she saying “I know!”
The show has been showing us the contrast between these two approaches, Syd’s and Claire’s, to Carmy’s mental health. So far, Carmy seems to miss Claire's approach the most; I wonder if it is because he felt loved without having to work on doing better, and I understand that, being self-conscious can be exhausting. That and the sensation that no matter how hard he tried, precisely because he tried the wrong way, he could feel Syd distancing herself from him and letting her down.
But in the end, if Claire is supposed to be endgame, you haven't shown her dealing with the truly “gnarly” stuff from Carmy. She hasn't seen him be cold and isolated; she hasn't seen the fire incidents or the rage episodes. She hasn't dealt with any of that, so there is space in the viewer's mind to question if she can handle it as well as Syd does. Moreover, you made specific writting choices that make me doubt it even more: “Mickey was cool, he will set things on fire”
I really hope the show doesn't plan to tell me that only due to Claire's presence/love Carmy will never experience any of these issues again, realistically speaking even therapy is not a guarantee that any of it wont resurface again in the future.
Not to mention love or a person has never been or should not be your only reason/resource for emotional regulation. That is so fucked up. Funny enough, you have put scenes that show that Syds voice (probably meaning her faith in him) has been the only actual instant cure to Carmys panick attacks, so…what are you trying to say, that Claire has the intention, but only Syd has the tools?
Something that I don't think anyone talks about enough and goes with the idea of giving traumatized people grace is that if you have healed you can tell when other people are not interested in doing the work. They will show you over and over again the ways in which they are disinterested in improving themselves. They can even be in therapy but don't actually internalize what they're hearing. Carmy definitely wants to get better. Understands that what he's doing isn't sustainable. The problem is he believes that the way to improve is taking it out on himself stripping the joy from his life alienating the people around him, when actually the opposite is what would be the most healing of all. If Sydney needs to leave she will leave but it is so clear from the first interaction after he gets out of the freezer that she sees and understands his trauma in a way no one else in his life does. Everyone has a piece that they understand but Sydney CLEARLY has a holistic view. You can almost see the moments where she wants to explain to everyone else why he's acting this way but like she says, she is not his babysitter. It is not her job to regulate him emotionally. Even if she understands where it is coming from. Her understanding is why she stays and whether or not she stays to see him (hopefully) improve and get help and figure out his shit we don't know but she stays because she understands and has a compassion for him that everyone else tries but can't quite reach.
The knowing in her voice when she says to Luka in the finale that the confrontation won't end well, they both know and understand. That's where her patience comes from. They are bonded in ways that they barely understand and a big part of that is the way they can't hide from each other. Carmy is too mentally ill this season to see Sydney drowning. That started the night of Friends and Family the second he thought that Chef was there, but that bond still exists. It's why she pushes off the Shapiro offer the night they stay late. She knows it isn't the time or place. That is why she feels conflicted about leaving. There is something she gets from Carmy no one else can give her and it's up to her to decide if that's worth letting Carmy figure out his shit and being there through that process.
There ain’t no way Carmy is letting Syd go now
Sydney will be offered an attractive offer, but she will not be going anywhere. Why? Carmy will fight for her. Like in the song Forever and for Always, Carmy will do everything to keep Sydney “forever and for always”, because “there ain't no way and there ain't no how” that he’s letting her go now. Trust me when I say that Carmy ain’t letting the woman he’s in love with go without fighting for her to stay. SydCarmy are forever and for always.
Syd and Carmy- A Lover's Quarrel
This meta focuses on the Sexy Complications that I mentioned in a meta called Romantic Beats. I will focus on the clash between Syd and Carmy and what makes their conflicts so compelling to watch on screen.
Truth be told, I get fired up watching Carmy and Syd argue. They're like the turning point between all the other conflicts on the show.
Maybe it's because Carmy really zooms in and focuses on Syd when he's ready to fight?
Or the blocking- which has been covered before in the sydcarmy ship.
Maybe it's how Sydney goes toe toe-to-toe with Carmy if she needs to, but she's the only one to calm him down and snap him out of his patterns.
I think it's all the above.
In screenwriting- how you write arguments it's big on subtext. What I love about Syd and Carmy's arguments- in season 2- is that they're equals, and the truth of what they're really fighting about is starting to reach a boiling point. So what is the argument really about between Carmy and Syd?
2x03 Sundae Carmy turns to Syd once he hears she's not pleased with the changes. He suddenly walks towards her- why is he so close? The argument is about miscommunication and how Sydney feels left out of their process to open The Bear- whereas Carmy thinks they're still fine; they're just as close as they were before. But the blocking- Syd steps away- hinting that this should be a private discussion with Carmy. He's taking her dissatisfaction with the wall literally, and while deep down- Syd is saying- hey, I'm feeling unsure and I'm scared- you gave me all the reason to doubt you today. Please don't give me a reason not to trust you. Once she gives him the solution, Carmy only understands what Syd means- you let me know. But his inner conflict was early that day. Carmy's conflict lies in this dilemma of what it means to be closer to someone- to let someone in and what makes a good relationship. Keep in mind he shut out many people when he was in New York, and now, since Mikey, he has this opportunity to experience a deeper relationship. But that entails being present, making the person happy, and expressing his love without past hurts. He wants love to be fun and joyful. But he needs to figure out how to get there. He's telling Sydney- hey, I'm scared too; this is new to me, and I don't know how to do it because past hurts are showing up for me again. This feels complicated. I'm supposed to be doing this thing with Mikey and it only hurts it's not fun for me. but here you are and I'm also experiencing different emotions I've never felt before and I don't know how to handle it.
Sidebar: The way Fak walks away in the left gif- like he just knows some shit is about to go down between them and the stares from Marcus and Richie (while Fak looks away). So I'm one of many entranced by their arguments?
2. 2x05 Pop
I love that Claire said the errand was anti-climatic- really, the romance between them is anti-climatic (thanks to @currymanganese edit). The climactic moment happens at the end when Syd and Carmy almost argue- something Carmy clearly wants to do with Sydney. But he's mad at himself more than anything. Sydney says you're dismissing me and you weren't there, and I feel alone here. Carmy is saying I know I'm at fault here, I know it's on me- but I'm still here, right? I just want to experience something different this time- and that may get in the way, but I'm still here.
2. 2x08 Bolognese Sydney and Carmy are arguing about Claire going over the menu. But it's about trust, Carmys wanting a better experience with all the trauma he's faced, and this person who's in between their relationship. Someone he doesn't call a girlfriend creates a wedge and steps in where she shouldn't. Carmy and cannolis isn't the issue- it's an important part of his life that he should have shared with Sydney. Sydney is saying this is something you should have shared with me. You're leaving me out again. You won't let me in.
4. 2x10 The Bear
The boiling point of season 2. Carmy is triggered when he thinks he sees his EMP boss. When he returns to the kitchen, he sees the cold dead fish(is there subtext here?) and lashes out at Sydney.
This isn't about the expo station or the cold fish. It's fear that tips over for Carmy. Carmy is back in a cycle he does not want to be in. Carmy is saying, " I'm scared. I've been here before and don't want to do it again. I'm back in this stressful feeling of being in that kitchen. His kitchen. This needs to be perfect.
Sydney is clear in this argument. He was not there. Something Carmy needs to hear.
The conflict lies in Carmy getting out of his old ways so he can build a healthy relationship with Sydney- whereas Sydney has to learn trust and let go and fall so Carmy can catch her- Sydney has to be patient with Carmy's past experience, and Carmy has to learn how to be there for someone, how to know and be close to Sydney.
A well-crafted argument can change the whole dynamic of a relationship. The impending big fight is covered on this sydcarmy ship a few times, but I just wanted to point out how excited I am with the inner conflict in Carmy and Syd's dynamic.
Sooner or later- the truth boils over in arguments between two characters. Will this argument continue to reveal what Syd and Carmy are scared of- will the arguments draw understanding and closeness?
Bring it on season 3!
#sydcarmy#Any subtext I missed in their arguments or ones you want to point out? Let's discuss!#the bear fx#sydney adamu#carmy x sydney#the bear meta
