I've got two!

In the same way that I think people confuse the Billionaire superhero archetype with deliberate billionaire agitprop instead of recognizing that it's just a narrative shortcut to handwave the logistics of the thing, I think critics of the portal fantasy genre sometimes jump right to "self-insert self-indulgent power fantasy" without giving a fair shake to how portal fantasy allows you to neatly pair constructed fantasy worldbuilding with a protagonist that thinks in legible 20th-21st century idioms and comes with a pre-built quest motivation (get da hell outta here). Obviously there are better and worse ways to flesh the protagonist out from there but it's an incredibly useful starting point.

I strongly suspect that that one XKCD edit of "Steven Moffat hates women vs Japan hates woman" miiiight have some applicability to some of the backlash I've seen against Isekai- For every yikes-inducing overly-wordy-titled power fantasy manga you present me with, I could pull something equally deranged and indulgent from the bloody pulps or the YA algae bloom. Mark Twain got in on the ground floor with this shit, good or bad none of it is new

A rare return to Tumblr, as it's the place to go when I have too many feelings about a thing that I need to express somewhere...

I recently read a 6-part series called The Lymond Chronicles, and let me tell you, I have FEELINGS.

When I say recently read, since I hit the point about halfway through the first book of being gripped, I have been utterly consumed. I devoured the rest of them, immediately went back to the start and read the entire series again, have now started (and almost finished) the first book for a third time and am enjoying it EVEN MORE.

I've laughed. I've cried. I've slammed the books shut needing to collect myself for a minute and breathe. I've bounced with giddy enjoyment. I've curled in a ball of overwhelming Feelings and felt like I could wail with the sheer beauty of these words and these characters and their emotions. I CANNOT EVEN. There we go, I said it, and I haven't needed to say that about a thing in ages.

It's been a very strange experience really. I did not expect to enjoy them. I started reading out of sufferance due to my mother's guilt tripping. They're her favourite books, and it turns out we have wild amounts in common of what pushes our buttons.

It's not a time period I'm massively keen on (Tudor), it's very hard to follow what's going on, you need to just switch your brain off and go with it and wish yourself luck but when it finally does click... THESE BOOKS.

Francis Crawford of Lymond (etc etc), you took me by surprise and have my heart.

I don't even know if there's an active fandom - if there is, hello??

I'm off to continue my re-read and further wallow in my feelings....

EVIL PEOPLE, BY SET IT OFF. added by Charlie Slimecicle at time of posting it is the 3rd track on the playlist, a spot WELL EARNED, FRANKLY (2nd is ofc punk tactics, used in that iconic animation, and the 1st is a foghorn sound effect for equally obvious reasons)

THESIS: THIS IS THE PERFECT REPRESENTATION OF BOLAS. (it also goes so hard)

in the song, the singer is talking about "evil people" (obv, that's the title). AT NO POINT IN THE SONG CAN I CONCLUDE WHETHER BOLAS IS THE SINGER, OR THE EVIL PEOPLE.

AND THAT IS PERFECT FOR TEAM BOLAS. now listen up chucklefucks

here are the lyrics to the chorus:

now listen. bolas GLEEFULLY murdering--themselves, their opponents, anybody--CRACKIN SMILES AND TWISTIN KNIVES. CHAOS. MURDER. FRIENDLY BUT LETHAL. THIS CHORUS SCREAMS BOLAS IS THE EVIL PEOPLE.

HOWEVER, MAY I DIRECT YOUR ATTENTION TO THE FIRST VERSE:

"i gave an inch, you take a life / it's do or die / They [the evil people] tried to drown me in the drama / and now i'm swimming with piranhas / that bleed me dry, i won't survive"

THIS IS REMINISCENT OF THE OTHER TEAMS FROM BOLAS'S POV ON DAY 1. bolas attempted to rp it out ("gave an inch") and were killed in stone silence for it ("you take a life") and then SUFFERED THE REST OF THE DAY LMAO ("now i'm swimming with piranhas"). this would suggest that BOLAS IS THE SINGER.

LIKE GENUINELY NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I LISTEN TO THIS SONG I CAN'T CONCLUDE WHETHER IT'S BOLAS SINGING ABOUT THE OTHER TEAMS, OR IF IT'S THE OTHER TEAMS SINGING ABOUT THEM

and genuinely i think that is PERFECT for bolas, i think that song perfectly fucking encapsulates the absolute madness that was team bolas. i think BOTH are true; i think bolas IS EQUALLY the singer and the evil people. i think bolas fully believes they are the singer and i think the other teams fully believe bolas is the evil people and i think that's PERFECT. BOLAS ARE THE EVIL PEOPLE, and yet they're also the ones being menaced by the evil people!!!!! and that's it that's purgatory!!!! that single fucking song is team bolas done and DUSTED. I REST MY FUCKING CASE.

I haven't been paying too much attention, but I have heard the machines do have a problem with cards jamming.
