i don't really relate to this 'gifted kid burnout' phenomemon. my 'gifted kid' experience (in canada) was literally just being told i was 'gifted' because of my test scores - that was it. once a year the vice principal would take me aside to encourage me to take AP English and ask why i got middling grades in math. there was an optional book club to attend, one time we took a bus into the city to hear a motivational speaker. i know there are/were 'better' programs with more stuff to do, so i'm not familiar with that 'gifted kid' environment.

i do think that for people's whose experiences were similar to mine, that burnout has to be somewhat self-induced. or - burnout isn't the right word at all and this is just pathologization of feeling miffed about not being special.

Summary: More Dad!Tsu’tey and Spider content. I’m literally just throwing these out as I think of them. This little bank of scenarios is gonna come in handy once my exams are done, that’s for sure. 

So for plot reasons in one of my fics, I’ve made it that Tsu’tey never learnt how to swim because he lives in the forest and he’s a tall bean so he didn’t really need that skill. Anyway, because he never learnt, it didn’t occur to him that Spider would require that skill. He also - in his panic - helpfully forgets that his son wears an exopack 24/7 and physically can’t drown himself.

Just Tsu’tey forgetting his fear of the water and YEETING himself into the sea or some deep ass lake to rescue his son that is having a great time. Only for Spider to have to rescue him instead. Cue Jake running over wondering what the fuss is about and Tsu’tey looks like a drowned cat with his tail between his legs and his braids sticking uncomfortably to his neck and shoulders. Spider refuses to make eye contact with him or he’ll burst out laughing and wound his pride.

okay but it’s like. if Lae’zel was in the modern day she’d be the top of all her classes (beating Gale who would be so fucking mad about it), on every sports team, head of the prom committee, just constant after-school activities, total overachiever, and she will not accept being second place to anybody. meanwhile Karlach is on every sports team but she doesn’t really want to be, she just wants to do sport for fun and hang out with her friends, but the head of P.E. made her join because she’s good at it. unfortunately getting mad about it makes her compete better. Shadowheart grew up in a weird church and was definitely homeschooled for most of her life and is only in a mainstream school for sixth form because her weird church want her to recruit new members (she sucks at convincing people the church is good). sometimes she says fucking insane things totally seriously and everyone in the class goes what the fuck. Wyll is a very nice empathetic boy who tries to get along with everyone including Shadowheart even though she roleplays warrior cats at lunchtime and Lae’zel even though she threatens to murder him if he gets a higher grade in the debate than her, and it blindsides everyone when they find out his dad is the Head Teacher. Gale would be taking five A-Levels instead of three or four solely for the academic clout it brings him. Astarion should have graduated ten years ago and nobody knows why he’s still here. Withers is the school nurse.
