For the past couple of years, I have been wearing a size 40" waist in pants. This morning, I stepped on the scale and saw 230.5 lbs read out on the screen. That's 37 lbs lighter than what I weighed on New Year's Day. I know that my relaxed fit jeans have been looking baggy (even the 38" pants I've held onto over the years) Karen suggested I go try on some "Straight leg" or "Slim Straight" jeans to see how they fit. I started off with size 38" waist jeans, and even some of those still felt a bit big. These photos show Size 36" waist Skinny jeans. A size I haven't fit into since sometime in 2010. The size "36 is still a bit tight, but wearable. I even tried on some 38" Levi 501 Button Fly jeans, and they fit very well. I'm determined to continue on this fitness and weight loss journey. Who knows, maybe I'll manage to get down to a size 34" waist (not been that small since 2002). By this summer, I'm going to need a new swimsuit. Can't wait for the annual pool party at the Brewer's house. This year, I'm not going to sit along the sidelines worrying about how fat my belly overhang looks. I'm getting in the pool and partying! "The Muse Factor"

Many photographers – perhaps especially fashion and beauty photographers – have favorite models that they photograph again and again. Irving Penn made some of his best images with the Swedish model Lisa Fonnsagrives, whom he eventually married. Richard Avedon had a special affinity for Lauren Hutton. These unique models offered special inspiration to their photographers, the term muse is the right one in this context. I have worked with many models and dancers since my early work with ballerinas in San Francisco over 25 years ago. I’ve photographed some, such as dancer Katita Waldo, multiple times. I’ve been lucky to work with wonderfully talented individuals on very demanding underwater projects, but there has been one very gifted model whose natural brilliance particularly helped me make what I consider some of my best images. Shawnee Free Jones entered my Marin County pool at a models’ casting. At one with water, she was relaxed and moved in ways that I had never seen before. I was so overwhelmed with her ability to be at home underwater that I thought I was seeing God. Shawnee was a gift, a dazzling, radiant gift. I soon learned that she had spent some of her childhood in Fiji, where the ocean was her playground. She told me she’d had underwater tea parties, and put bungee cords around turtles and went for underwater “walks.” Shawnee’s middle name, Free, perfectly describes her particular genius, an ability to use her body underwater in infinitely creative ways. Her improvisations were like physical jazz solos. I would hatch an idea and she could work for an hour making every photograph I took significantly new and different from what went before. I only needed to suggest a feeling, and she would invent and re-invent without ever running out of ways to express it, without any heavy directing from me. She was my underwater muse, making my work look fantastic. She spoiled me, and like a true muse, made herself irreplaceable as no one else could do what she could.

This was a series of more provocative images Shawnee wanted to make for her own portfolio. These were not images I was interested in making: It was a way to thank her for the magnificent work we had done together. This was her shoot!

We explored many ideas together. In this image the camera captures her underwater (the lower 60% of the image), then her reflection at the undersurface of the water, and finally, at the top, the refracted image distorted by photographing at a more severe angle through the water’s surface.

We have not seen her for some time—Beverly and I miss her greatly.

How do you hold your buoy, above the knee or below? A low buoy position can help get your feet on the surface but requires good rotation and strong core position, with a longer lever demand. It can prevent cheat kicking when doing pull work. It’s best suited for the long axis strokes of freestyle and backstroke. A high buoy position may help keep your hips high but requires good leg position, and foot control. Today my swimsuit from #swimsuitsforall came in the mail. I wanted to take this swimsuit and turn it into a statement. I'm a size 12. I'm 5'9" and 177 pounds. Why am I telling you this? Because I'm not embarrassed of my weight or my size. In high school I weighed 140 pounds and yet I had no confidence. Now at 20 years old and 37 pounds heavier, I am more confident than ever before. What I have learned is that no matter your body type, it is incredibly important to love yourself. We have only one body, so why not celebrate it? To all of you beautiful, inspiring women- Don't let the media put you down. You are beautiful, sexy, and loved.

Tuesday training tips with @TheAFish1 Swim specific dryland training does not have to literally look like swimming. Choose exercises in the gym that are best for developing gym qualities and patterns that carryover to swim. Focus more on endurance, strength, and power through the ranges of motion required for your stroke, and reciprocal patterns to balance joint forces and repetitive stresses of swim.
