How do you hold your buoy, above the knee or below? A low buoy position can help get your feet on the surface but requires good rotation and strong core position, with a longer lever demand. It can prevent cheat kicking when doing pull work. It’s best suited for the long axis strokes of freestyle and backstroke. A high buoy position may help keep your hips high but requires good leg position, and foot control. Choose exercises in the gym that are best for developing gym qualities and patterns that carryover to swim. Focus more on endurance, strength, and power through the ranges of motion required for your stroke, and reciprocal patterns to balance joint forces and repetitive stresses of swim.
