National Cook a Sweet Potato Day
As sweet potatoes are one of the most important crops in the world, it only makes sense that National Cook a Sweet Potato Day has arisen over the ages. Sweet potatoes are delicious and chock-full of all sorts of vitamins and minerals your body needs to stay healthy, and it’s high time we stopped looking at them as just an addition to our Thanksgiving dinner.
History of National Cook a Sweet Potato Day
No official origin of Sweet Potato Day itself can be found, however it is likely that various cultures have honoured this food for centuries. In fact, the sweet potato has been cultivated and enjoyed for thousands of years, as the origin and domestication of the sweet potato are estimated to have happened at least 5000 years ago.
When digging up the remains of an ancient Peruvian culture, researchers found remnants of sweet potatoes that may date back as far as 8000 B.C.
When introduced to Europe in the 16th century, the sweet potato was automatically declared a delicacy and was very expensive, which was especially strange seeing as how it had taken the English 200 (!) years to start treating Irish potatoes like real food.
Till this day, sweet potatoes are a staple in countries such as Uganda and Rwanda, and they are also very popular in most Asian countries, from Japan to Vietnam to India.
How to celebrate National Cook a Sweet Potato Day
National Cook a Sweet Potato Day is our chance to recognise the important contributions that this vegetable has made to humanity.
As with other food-related events, part of the fun of this day is that we can cook a sweet potato however we see fit. Whether it is boiled, steamed, fried or prepared with other delectable dishes, the sweet potato is both healthy and tasty.
Sweet potatoes can be used in salads, pies and soups. They can be used as a side dish or serve as the main course when made into a casserole. They can be combined with flour, yeast and several other ingredients to be made into rolls, or they can be combined with eggs, sugar and spices like cinnamon to make a delicious pie. There are even recipes for sweet potato quesadillas, sweet potato pudding and sweet potato chip dip to be found.

Was out shopping at Don Don Donki and spotted this Nissin Cup Noodles Potato Chips - Black Pepper Crab (黑胡椒螃蟹). I know I have seen this flavour in cup noodles form but not in potato chips. Cutting open the bag, the V-cut chips doesn’t look impressive at all with oil stains on the potato chips. Although there doesn’t seem to be much black pepper, it does pack in some spicy heat but with barely any crab flavour, let alone any umaminess. I think I will just stick to the noodles in the future.
The other snack that I gotten was this Morinaga Bake Creamy Cheese which looks pretty yummy to me. If I am not mistaken, this item is sold exclusively in Don Don Donki. Sealed inside are ten small blocks of cheesecake-like snack. There is a cheese layer comprising of three kinds of cheese – 34% camembert, 45% cream and 6% mascarpone cheese. There is also a white chocolate layer sandwiched between two baked layers. Popping one into the mouth, the strong cheese flavour is evident, followed by the creaminess and then the saccharine sweetness hit you. Both me and mum think that it is far too cloying for casual snacking.

Don't cry. Chop about 2lbs of sweet potatoes (3 or 4 depending on size) into 3/4 inch pieces (about 2cm), add garlic powder, salt, onion powder, pepper, thyme, basil, and paprika (preferably Hungarian paprika) to taste (or just a tsp of each if you need a measurement) and about a capful of olive oil. Mix until spices and oil cover all sweet potatoes. Place potatoes on a tinfoil lined baking sheet in a single layer and bake at 450F for 25 minutes (Google says that's 232C) until sweet potatoes are tender and have begun to brown. Okay?
#You can peel them if you want but I just scrub them real good#Cooking#Food#I did not like sweet potatoes until I tried this recipe#You can use cooking spray if you want but if you've coated the sweet potatoes properly the olive oil will prevent sticking#The foil is mostly so you don't have to wash your baking sheet
