"This was something a lot of us waited to come back to." - Jonathan Roxmouth
After being delayed indefinitely due to the pandemic, the relaunched Phantom of the Opera World Tour in China has finally wrapped up successfully following seven months of touring seven cities in Shenzhen, Xi’an, Shanghai, Suzhou, Chengdu, Beijing, and Guangzhou. A huge mission accomplished, years in the making!
This is their final curtain call in Guangzhou on January 26, 2025.

The Qianlong Emperor of China took several tours of the country during his 61-year reign. These were commemorated in massive (over 40 feet long, in one case) painted silk scrolls. These are like Where's Waldo for imperial China, showing all sorts of people going about their daily routines:
The first of these scrolls was Prosperous Suzhou, a masterpiece that shows the city and the countryside around it. We start in the countryside, with villagers busily roofing a house:
Then we come across a mountain path, with tiny figures ascending:
Soon we see the bustling riverfront with shops and an array of boats:
The examination hall, where aspiring scholars study the classics:
And, finally, the city’s fortified port, a sign of imperial strength:

In eastern China, Lake Tai (Tai Hu) has become almost surrounded by urban development in recent decades. Three cities — Huzhou, Suzhou, and Wuxi — have grown dramatically since 1985, their collective populations increasing from 1.7 million to more than 12.5 million. In 2007, the Chinese government pledged more than $14 billion to clean up Lake Tai, which had been contaminated for years by improper disposal of chemicals and sewage.

📍Hanshan Temple (Hán Shān Sì 寒山寺) & Maple Bridge (Fēng Qiáo 楓橋)
P3: Poem Stele of “Mooring by Maple Bridge at Night 楓橋夜泊” in Handwriting by Yú Yuè 俞樾
At moonset cry the crows, streaking the frosty sky; Dimly lit fishing boats’ neath maples sadly lie. Beyond the city wall, from Temple of Cold Hill; Bells break the ship-borne roamer’s dream and midnight still. –Zhāng Jì 張繼 “Mooring by Maple Bridge at Night 楓橋夜泊” (Tang Dynasty), translated by Xǔ Yuān-chōng 許淵衝
P14: Stele of Táng Yín 唐寅’s Poem “Thoughts on visiting Maple Bridge 游楓橋有感”
Outside the Jīn and Chāng gates (“Jīn and Chāng gates” here refers to “Suzhou”), on the Maple Bridge Road; the lights of myriad homes shimmer faintly with the moonlit mist. In the lingering sound of the watchtower's night watchman’s drum, the mournful bugles echoes in the ears; the ship-borne roamer hears the midnight tolling bells from Cold Mountain Temple. The outlines of trees are staggered high and low, indistinct; the mountain scenery in near and far distance, becomes blurred. Frost covers the sky, chilling people to the bone; as dawn approaches the River City (“River City” here refers to “Suzhou”), the distant cawing of crows can be heard. –Táng Yín 唐寅 “Eight Poetic Odes to Gusu - Part Six: Cold Mountain Temple 姑蘇八詠·其六:寒山寺” (Ming Dynasty), translated by Copilot, Gemini and YongZS永值生

it’s two in the morning and i’m awake thinking about how when fang duobing wanted to get into baichuan court, he needed an alias, so he was like quick, what’s a good fake name? yuan jiankang. this likely gets lost in translation but 方多病 (fang duobing) literally means “prone to many illnesses”. fang duobing's made up name? 袁建康 (yuan jiankang) - the surname 袁 (yuan) being a homonym of 远 meaning “always / forever” and 建康 (jiankang) meaning “healthy”. FOREVER HEALTHY. he just… picked the literal opposite of his name.
fast forward however many episodes to when li lianhua is teaching fang duobing yangzhouman, but then fang duobing starts asking questions about this wondrous technique, so li lianhua’s like quick, what’s a good fake name? suzhoukuai. to recap: 杨洲慢 (yangzhouman) - 扬州 (yangzhou) being a city, and 慢 (man) meaning “slow”. li lianhua’s made up name? 苏州快 (suzhoukuai) - 苏州 (suzhou) being… a different city, and 快 (kuai) meaning… “fast”. it’s literally just… the opposite.
i. i just. they share a single brain cell and it is constantly working overtime.
#100% at some point 阿飞 needed an alias and told someone his name was 阿行#(飞 or fei meaning fly and 行 or xing meaning walk)#god i love them#mysterious lotus casebook#this show was so much funnier than it had any right to be#and then it kicked you in the stomach#text#my ramblings

China has led the world in promoting the recirculation of waste materials.
Objectives included reusing 72% of industrial solid waste by 2015 and raising resource productivity (economic output per unit resources used) by 15%. The plan laid out a three-pronged '10–100–1,000' strategy: 10 major programmes focusing on recycling industrial wastes, conversion of industrial parks, remanufacturing, urban mining, and the development of waste-collection and recycling systems; 100 demonstration cities such as Suzhou and Guangzhou; and 1,000 demonstration enterprises or industrial parks nationwide. In 2012, the NDRC and the finance ministry called for 50% of national industrial parks and 30% of provincial ones to complete circular-economy transformation initiatives by 2015, with an aim of achieving close to zero discharge of pollutants.

Character Profile Tag
Thank you for the tag @willtheweaver
Here is my intelligent but dumb in love, Rafael Huang Rui
---
Name: Rafael Huang Rui
Age: 26
Sex: Male
Species: Human
Appearance: Huang Rui is a striking figure, with delicate yet masculine features that make him stand out, even in the bustling city of Suzhou. Standing at about 5'9", he has a slender yet refined build that reflects his scholarly nature more than physical labor. His skin is fair, a result of spending much of his time indoors, studying or teaching, rather than toiling under the sun. His hair, jet black and straight, falls just past his shoulders, often tied back in a simple yet elegant manner, highlighting his high cheekbones and sharp jawline. His almond-shaped eyes are a warm shade of brown, filled with intelligence and a quiet intensity that commands attention. Huang Rui typically wears modest but fine hanfu, favoring lighter, earthy tones such as soft greens and browns that reflect his connection to nature and simplicity. The scent of ink and aged paper fills the air, as books and scrolls line the wooden shelves along one wall. The desk, positioned near a large window that lets in natural light, is cluttered with half-finished manuscripts, ink pots, and brushes, giving a glimpse into his creative process. His bed, simple and neatly made, rests against the opposite wall, draped in soft, earth-toned linens. There are a few personal touches—like the small jade ornament his mother gave him before her passing, which he keeps on his bedside table, and a delicate bonsai tree sitting near the window, which he carefully tends to each morning. The room is a quiet sanctuary, where chaos is kept at bay, allowing his mind the space to explore ideas and stories.

Fears: Failing to live up to his family’s expectations, Being manipulated or losing control of his own life, Seeing his written works used in dangerous or unintended ways
Faults: Overthinks situations, leading to indecision
Tends to withdraw emotionally, making him hard to read
Can be overly idealistic, not always seeing the darker side of things

What they want more than anything else: Huang Rui seeks creative freedom and the ability to write stories that impact people’s lives, without having to bend to the expectations of his family or society. A Chinese man has been sentenced to death for fatally stabbing a 10-year-old Japanese schoolboy, in a case that sparked concern among Japanese expats living in China.
The sentence for the knife attack in the southern city of Shenzhen in September was handed down on Friday, according to Japanese media reports.
It comes a day after another court handed a death sentence to a Chinese man who attacked a Japanese mother and child and killed a Chinese woman who tried to protect them in Suzhou province in June.
The courts' decisions come as Chinese authorities carried out several high-profile executions in recent days.
The stabbings in Shenzhen and Suzhou were among three attacks on foreigners in China last year. Just days before the Suzhou incident, four US college instructors were hurt in a knife attack at a public park in Jilin in the country's north.
After the attack in Shenzhen, Japanese companies, including Toshiba and Toyota, told their staff to take precautions against any possible violence, while Panasonic offered its employees free flights home.
In the Suzhou case, a Chinese court said that Zhou Jiasheng, 52, had carried out the attack outside a Japanese school after he lost the will to live, following the loss of his job and subsequent debts.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters at a press conference that the court ruled that the attack was an "intentional murder" and the penalty was given due to the "significant social impact" the crime had caused.
However, the court made no mention of Japan during the ruling, according to Hayashi, who added that officials from the Japanese consulate in Shanghai had attended the sentencing.
Hayashi added that the crime, which killed and injured "innocent people", including a child, was "absolutely unforgivable".
He also paid tribute to Hu Youping, the Chinese bus attendant who was killed by Zhou while trying to protect a Japanese mother and her child.
Earlier on Thursday, Mao Ning, spokesperson for China's foreign ministry, briefly commented in a daily press conference that the case was "in judicial process", adding that China would "as always, act to protect the safety of foreign nationals in China."
China has been grappling with an uptick in public violence, with many attackers believed to have been spurred by a desire to "take revenge on society" - where perpetrators act on personal grievances by attacking strangers.
There were 19 attacks on pedestrians or strangers last year, a sharp increase from single digits in previous years.
On Monday, a man who killed at least 35 people in a car attack that is thought the be the country's deadliest attack in a decade was executed.
Last month, a man who killed eight people in a stabbing spree at his university was sentenced to death.
Additionally, in December, a man who injured 30 people by driving into a crowd of children and parents outside a primary school was handed a suspended death sentence.
