🎃Day 31: Wei Wuxian's Birthday/Halloween🎃
You cannot convince me that WWX would /not/ drag his little family out trick or treating for his birthday, and make them all wear matching costumes.
And with this... ✨ that is the end of inktober 2024! ✨ I'm proud to report that I officially survived all 31 one days, and managed to do mostly full illustrations for every single day of the challenge. Honestly, even looking back at it now, that was bloody wild- I can't believe I made it!!
That being said I'm definitely going to need a break for a little bit now...

MOS Pa Kent and MAWS Pa Kent
I find the polar opposite depictions of Jonathan in these stories incredibly fascinating.
MOS Jonathan shields and separates Clark from anything related his heritage, including things like his ship and powers. Encouraging suppresion and caution in Clark.
Actively telling Clark to hide his powers and never use them, scolding him whenever he used them. He is a man terrified of the world taking his son away from him, specially knowing he has no real way of protecting Clark from anything that may seek to harm him. So he encourages him to hide himself and avoid drawing any attention.
He is a more jaded and cynical man, immediately assuming the world would attack and try to kill his son (he ended up being right, which is its own can of worms), would try to rip his miracle child, his star baby away from him.
He only sees a world that would harm the child he so desperately seeks to protect, that child he loves more than anything.
MAWS Jonathan is the complete opposite of his MOS counterpart. He is the one that encouraged Clark to discover himself, to make contact with the ship, to practice his use and control of his powers, even turning that into a game a young Clark could enjoy.
He is aware of the shock Clark´s existence will create but in the end he has faith in humanity seeing Clark for what he truly is, someone who just wants to help others.
He is more optimistic and cheerful, thinking of the best and encouraging other people to do so too.
In MAWS, Martha is the one who is the one who wants to keep Clark away from anything alien, the one that clings to him and wants to keep him hidden.
While Jonathan is cheerful over Clark deciding to go public and help people, Martha is the one that is slightly reluctant (though not to MOS Jonathan´s level, like letting yourself get killed by a tornado because you don´t want your son to expose himself is extreme though somewhat understandable) to let him go, though she eventually gets on board and creates his trunks.
This dicotomy is reflected on Clark´s abilities.
Flight is one of his most characteristic abilities and it often serves as a metaphor for Clark feeling free and accepted, it comes in moments where Clark learns to love and accept himself.
So it is interesting to see how in MAWS it is one of the first he obtains while in MOS it is one of the last ones. Showing the difference in how their settings and enviroments reacted to them.
MAWS is honestly amazing and I am incredibly glad we got this adaptation of the Superman mythos. It is so unique and refreshing. I can´t wait for season 3.
Regardless of its flaws I genuinely love MOS and its depiction of the Kent family. Its different from what we are used to in comics and tv shows, but it offers a unique take on the Kents dealing with Clark´s powers. At the end the day Jonathan is just a father terrified someone will hurt his child and he won´t be able to protect him.
Anyways this ramble has lasted enough, love both pieces of media to bits.

Ko-fi thank-you sentences for Mo; Clark panic-adopts his teenage clones (yes, including the supervillain one).
"I changed my mind," Superman says evenly. "Consider yourself stolen."
"What?" Match frowns reflexively. Superman adjusts his grip on Thirteen; cradles him more carefully in his arms.
Doesn't stop looking at Match, though, for some inexplicable reason.
"You say you're property?" Superman says, quiet and intent. "Fine. But property doesn't return itself when it gets stolen. If the Agenda wants you back, they're going to have to take you from me."
". . . why," Match says, very slowly.
"Because they're going to have to pry you from my cold dead hands before I ever let them near you again," Superman says, his pupils illuminated by red pinpricks of light.
Match doesn't think this man has ever made less sense to him than he's making right now, and Superman almost never makes sense to him. Not in anything more than the most abstract terms, anyway.
Superman doesn't want anything to do with him. Doesn't care that they share secondhand DNA. Doesn't care that–
This doesn't make sense.
Neither does the fact Superman bothered going to get Thirteen when Thirteen always escapes anyway, though, or why Superman caught Thirteen when he fell, or why he told Thirteen he was safe and then gave him to Match. None of those things are even a little bit logical or rational.

So I know I've talked about how MAWS takes a lot of notes from Invincible (and I've given it some shit for that) but I will say I do love that the most popular Superman media at the moment share the thesis of "No matter what people say, helping others is always the most important thing you can do and is never beneath you". We're healing.

I think a lot of people's problem with bvs is they really didn't watch mos. Like it's such a direct and deliberate response to mos that you lose the meaning of what Clark is fighting for and how it's deeply affected the media and in turn the two most ruthless orphans in his lore. Bruce and Lex. And how emotionally it makes it more profound to me anyway that he is a traumatized man after killing Zod and sentencing the rest of his last existing people to protect his new world to find that peace in Lois and in conversatios with his mom.

imagine if Bruce knew Clark before the events of MOS and then had to sit there with his head in his hands complaining to Alfred that “I TOLD him never to talk to the police!” while Clark lounges around in US military lockup telling them exactly how many years he’s been on Earth, what his powers are, and basically flaunting his secret identity like it’s a mini umbrella in a margarita

Okay, this is a ramble, but hear me out.
I've never been a Supes girl - the goody two shoes attitude was always off putting for me. My foray into DC was mostly restricted to Christian Bale's Batman and the occasional glimpses of Wonder Woman.
But then I watched Justice League and I was like - oh, the angsty superbat fanfiction potential is strong in this one.
Then I read all the superbat fanfiction I could find, and I started appreciating Superman in a vague, he's good to associate with Batman kind of way.
Today, I finally watched Man of Steel ( I know, I'm late) and oh boy, oh boy. I get it.
Henry Cavill' Superman. He's just a man and he is so much more. The simmering rage, the barely restrained violence writ in every line of his body. The clench of his jaw and the constant spark of defiance and power in his eyes. The way he holds himself with the ease of a man who knows he's the most powerful guy in the room.
And at the heart of it all, he's still a good man. More human than most people he shares the earth with. Ready to lay his life on the line, but he'll be damned if anyone tries to tell him what to do.
I can see injustice happening. All it would take to set this Superman off is one wrong move, and all his carefully maintained control would just snap. A slow smirk, the casual tilt of his neck and a flash of those pure blue eyes would be the last thing this world would see before it all turned red.

#Am i evil for wanting to sacrifice pa kent sometimes#love him hes great hes done his job with clark#but i always toyed with the idea of clark getting grief for development later in life#i dont think any of his adoptive parents should die well into him being an established superman#but what i do think is one of his parents dying would do him a service in his later years character wise#pa kent is generally agreed upon to be the most sacrificial ( sorry pa kent.. )#a time in clarks life where his father is gone and he just has his mother to look after seems like it would be#a refreshing pov for him to remember what he has left in this world...#there are all sorts of iterations btw. some where both parents die at the same time from tragedy (car crash)#or where one dies#i personally love superman: braniac where clark fails to save his father as a young superman#which shows him..not even a superman can save everyone - a rude awakening. so its just him and his mother.#while i do think of making the braniac origin my canon definitively i also love the pa kent interactions w clarks league friends#like that one time batman visited and they chatted was nice ( standing )#we will see! will probably sacrifice pa kent i mean if a comic origin story did it + a movie i meannnn.#but that means i would have to rework how clark comes back 2 life in death of su.perman#also last point here: clarks a mamas boy i love him being the young son taking care of his ma ( sighs wistfully at MOS scenes when he visit

Snyderverse Superman
I don't like the angle the story itself is trying to sell on him but I do think the reactions of the characters inside the story are realistic to what would happen to him in the real word.
Lex Luthor hates him because of his own internalized issues, using him as a scapegoat he can pin blame on. Pretending he hates him due to some higher purpose.
Bruce hates Superman because he doesn't understand him, and people fear what they don't understand. (and in this universe metas became common after Superman appeared so this Batman has no experience with superpowered beings, he didn't slowly increase the powerlevel of the powered being around him, he went from 0 to a 100, and that is scary)
The people who he has saved and cared for love him because they've seen him, they know him.
The people that hate him tend to be people in power or those affected by Black Zero.
He didn't get that much time to make the world know him, he was Superman for like 2 years only, compared to the 20+ he has in the comics.
He is this powerful being that sprung out of knowhere, that is bound to make people afraid, and no ones likes being afraid so they hate.
I think the most realistic part of the movie is the tv scene where people are sitting down and talking about weather he should be allowed to roam free or not.
As if it is moral to deny a sentient being freedom/ autonomy.
Because as much as it sucks to think about it is what would most likely happen if a superman appeared.
People say snyder superman is too angry or gloomy but who the fuck wouldn't if they were subject to hearing people treating them like an object and hating him?

It really isn't a case of him hating Superman, but having a very poor understanding of the actual character beyond the visuals.
Tumblr media
Snyder's Superman is all about the imagery and iconography. He likes lifting stuff directly from the comics he thinks looks cool, but never shows much interest in going any deeper than that. His Superman is a model, there to pose for all his pretty pictures and do as little talking as possible. It's no coincidence that Cavill has fewer and fewer lines with each movie (just 13 lines in a 4 hour JL movie) because Snyder also thinks superheroes talking to each other is just too silly.
Tumblr media
Snyder doesn't hate Superman, he just isn't interested in the character or idea of Superman, only the image of Superman, and if he could make it an r-rated image for one of his trademark director's cuts all the better.
