Years ago, I would’ve said “no, A’ja”, I don’t agree with that. Because we do have players like Pete Maravich, Allen Iverson, Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady, Elgin Baylor, Karl Malone, Charles Barkley, Reggie Miller, Steve Nash, John Stockton, Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey Jr, Mike Piazza, Dan Marino, Randy Moss (there are more across all sports) who never won a title on any level but are great players who have gone down in sports history.

But currently, I think I understand why she said this and why I am sorta leaning more with her. Specifically if we’re equating “great” to greatest of all time.

The GOAT term has been thrown around a whoooole lot lately. And for one particular athlete who is getting that coveted title, I don’t feel it’s warranted. Caitlin Clark prematurely getting this label seems so minimizing. Especially considering the narrative has been this way before she even completed her collegiate years, plus in how this title was being given to her (most of this narrative push was only post the Angel Reese/LSU defeat and what went down during that finals. It seemed disingenuous more than anything given the circumstances. It seemed like a way to console her. Give a consolation for her & Iowa going 0-2 in consecutive finals run).

I would place those players I named as legendary players. Of course they are. Icons too. They are legends in how they changed the game. How they played. What they did for their teams. Their franchises. In record-setting (with most points etc., team records). How and what they did individually on the court. They are memorable and had/have memorable careers. They are transformative players that transformed the game in areas. And based on what I wrote, Caitlin Clark is great.

I probably place some of these legends as Hall of Famers too. With or without the actual title of HOFer. Because if records are set or records are broken by a player, then they can become HOFers.

But a GOAT? I don’t know.

There are college GOATs and some that would not be considered pro GOAT. Tim Tebow, Chamique Holdslaw, Carmelo Anthony, Patrick Ewing. Some players that played in college and pro but didn’t win a title but won as coaches and are coaching GOATs—Dawn Staley and Becky Hammon. But then, does a professional title as an athlete alone make a GOAT? Not a collegiate title but a pro title.

I do think that winning a professional title is what makes a GOAT a GOAT. Or at the very most, a title in college makes you a GOAT even if never winning one professionally. I guess it’s subjective — to me, a GOAT has a title (a supreme GOAT has both in college & pro). But what really are the GOAT rules and standards?

I fully expect trump to try to yank this national monument status as quickly as he can. He tried to downsize the Bears Ears National Monument and the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument during his first term, but his downsizing was reversed by President Biden within a short time after he moved into the White House. So, if trump tries, the proponents of the two national monuments described in this Desert Sun article (Chuckwalla National Monument in the SoCal deserts and Sáttítla National Monument in northern California) should just be as nasty and pesty as possible, sue everybody involved and just hold on for better days.

President Joe Biden will designate vast, ecologically rich swaths of southern California desert and of northern California woodlands as a pair of new national monuments in a visit to the state early next week, sources tell The Desert Sun.

One will be the Chuckwalla National Monument, encompassing more than 620,000 acres of desert woodlands and washes that provide critical habitat for millions of migrating birds, endangered desert tortoise, iconic chuckwalla lizards and other wildlife. It will stretch from south of Joshua Tree National Park and north of Interstate 10 across a confluence of two ecosystems, where the Mojave Desert meets the Colorado and the Sonoran Desert, a veteran conservationist with direct knowledge of the decision said.

The designation, which will also protect sacred tribal sites used for thousands of years and broaden recreation opportunities for Latino farmworkers and other area residents, was achieved after a deal was struck with major solar industry groups last spring. Biden will visit the eastern Coachella Valley at the doorstep of the monument on Tuesday, a person familiar with planning for the visit who was not authorized to speak on the record confirmed to The Desert Sun.

The second new monument will be the 200,000-acre Sáttítla National Monument in northern California near the Oregon border, the person familiar with Biden's visit confirmed. The designations were first reported by The Washington Post. A spiritual center for the Pit River and Modoc Tribes, the Sattlitla monument footprint also encompasses mountain woodlands, rare meadows and serpentine seeps that are home to rare flowers and wildlife.

It is unclear if Biden will approve a related request to expand Joshua Tree National Park, which continues to surge in popularity.

Last week I heard an inheritance tax bemoaning farmer claiming he was a “custodian" of the countryside as if that claim alone should exempt him from tax. But he is not the only one making this claim:

The Farmers Union also claims British farmers are “custodians of the iconic British landscape." (NFU General Election Manifesto 2024) and accused the Labour government of “betrayal" with regard to the changes in inheritance tax.

The dictionary definition of “custodian" is:

 "A person who has responsibility for protecting or taking care of something or keeping something in good condition".

Lets examine how well British farmers have protected and taken care of Britain’s iconic landscape and the wildlife that lives within it.

“More than 50 conservation groups say the "policy-driven" intensification of farming is a significant driver of nature loss in the UK. The State of Nature report assessed 8,000 UK species and found that one in 10 are threatened with extinction."  (BBC News: 14/09/2016)

Needless to say farm leaders disputed the findings. Yet a team of ornithologists, zoologists, biologists and ecologists reported that the chief cause of declining bird populations in the UK was due to the use of pesticides and herbicides by farmers. Runoff from farms, including fertilizers and animal waste pollute waterways and soil, affecting the health  of ecosystems and the wildlife that depend upon them. Grubbing up hedgerows and cutting down woodland has led y to a loss of habitat for many of our native mammals and other species.

Not content with killing off Britain’s wildlife, many farmers are also threatening the health of British consumers, in particular the long-term wellbeing of our children.

The use of pesticides which contain “forever chemicals” are a direst threat to public health. PFA chemicals, which take centuries to break down in the environment, were found in 3300 samples tested by the UK government in 2022.

Farmers do not have to use these chemicals. They choose to do so because it increases output and therefore their profits.

“Profit before people” would seem to be the farmers' motto!

Rather than being “custodians” of the iconic British landscape farmers have traditionally been one of its worst enemies, bent on its destruction if it affords them a few more pennies in the bank.

In 1950, a Forestry Commission assessment concluded that we had 1 million km of hedgerow. By 2007, this reduced to 477,000km, a loss of approximately 52%. This loss of habitat for wildlife was the direct result of farmers deliberately removing hedgerows because by so doing they made more money.

Kemi Badenoch, objecting to rich farmers now having to pay inheritance tax (albeit only 50% of what everyone else has to pay) said:

 “This policy is  cruel, it is unfair and it is going to destroy farming as we know it”

I would suggest that “farming as we know it” isn’t fit for purpose.

“A study found that that UK is one of the world's most nature-depleted countries, with on average about half its biodiversity left - far below the global average of 75%. It means the UK is in the bottom 10% globally for biodiversity.”  (CBBC: 11/10/21)

This isn’t custodianship, this is environmental vandalism on an industrial scale. The destruction of habitat, the use of pesticides and herbicides, the culling of foxes, rabbits and badgers, the eradication of meadows. wetlands and grassland, have all contributed to the  catastrophic loss of biodiversity In Britain, and all in the pursuit of farmers making greater profits.

You know how the abyss order used to be khanriah right? I'm going to loosely interpret it this way so beware.

And you know Enjou, right? The extremely over the top abyss lector?

What if he was...your dad?

And what if your mom was also a somewhat powerful mage in Khanriah that got turned into an abyss mage during the cataclysm??

And when the cataclysm was taking place, what if Enjou and your mom put some type of wierd ass spell on you so you would fall asleep and wake in like 500 years because that's when they think you would be safe?

And 500 year later, you are woken by an over the top abyss lector and an abyss mage screaming at you to wake up dotingly, because for some reason they're still married and were able to stick together due to plot holes?

And then you pretty much live your life out like any cottage core maiden would, except your father is an abyss lector and your mother is an abyss mage. And we can't forget that you can do witchcraft too. (Your mom teaches you the basics. )Hilichurl linguistics are also your specialty.

When you marry Venti, the wedding is extremely iconic. Istaroth and the rest of the thousand wind sprites take up 99% of the aisles, and then squished in the corner of the front aisle is Enjou with your abyss mage mother quaking in his lap because they are terrified of the little sprites. (Idk why but parents are always so scared of the cutest things like- is it just me)

Then in the photos istaroth and Venti are just gonna scoop everyone in their wings as if they are baby birds for the silly picture.

Okokokok. I watched Watching and Dreaming several hours ago at this point, and the hype still hasn’t gone away. So here were are: Welcome to Stella’s ranting about different parts of the Owl House finale to cope with the absolute insanity in my brain.

OWL HOUSE WATCHING AND DREAMING SPOILERS BELOW

1. Raine. Raine Whispers is a fucking badass. They were fighting against being possessed not only by the Collector but by Belos at the same time, and still managed to break through TWICE. The Collector lost control over them the first time, and they managed to push Belos out second. And then. After ALL OF THAT. They get up and chase Belos into the throne room to try and stop him from possessing the Titan. Absolute powerhouse.

2. King’s DAD???!!! Bi-gender icon, over here wearing a bad girl coven t-shirt and pajama pants. And a tiny Hooty sticking out of his eye?? Gosh, I really wish he’d been able to talk to King, but the bread pun message hit hard regardless. He’s been watchinggggg ;-;

3. Eda and King’s reactions to Luz’s ‘death’ were HEARTBREAKING. And the Collector processing the concept of death- that entire sequence hurt. Seriously, I cried twice during that scene alone- once when Luz died, and once when she came back. Eda and King immediately calming down from their rampage upon seeing she was okay I’m not ok-

4. DARIUS AND HUNTER. All of the parent-child reunions were adorable, both Gus and Willow seeing their dad’s again dhdhdh, but Darius and Hunter’s little moment aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. And Eberwolf too! I really wish we could have gotten more, but the show gave us so much with what little time Disney gave

5. The flapjack tattoos. And Hunter being a palismen carver. AND HIS NEW PALISMEN- I heard Dana confimed the new bird’s name was Waffle and I love him so much. ALSO HUNTLOW SIDE-HUG???? I’m going to need fanfics for all of these ships and moments to cope with this finale istg. I’ll probably write a pile of them

6. RAEDA EARRING SWAP. I was already crying watching the end credits, and then I spotted Raine’s earring on Eda and immediately had to rewind. I didn’t even notice Raine wearing Eda’s earrings until I went back- canon or not, I’m interpreting the earring-swap as a boiling isles alternative to wedding rings. Sue me.

7. DALADOR CONFIRMED??? I now need content about Amity and Hunter being step-siblings because that shit is hilarious. And when Amity and Luz eventually get married that would make Hunter her brother-in-law ddhdhdh I’m fine. Also, Alador removing the coven sigils- we love to see it. And the fact that Odalia is nowhere to be seen is perfection

8. LUZ GOT HER QUINCENERA!! Lilith tried XD

9. Lilith and Hooty’s reunion was everything I hoped it to be. Their friendship means so much dhdhd. Lilith aroace icon u.u

TVL & VC Thoughts: Storyboarding

Because I have insomnia, I was up all night thinking about the rumors that Sam's contract was signed for 5 seasons. It makes me both nervous and hopeful, cuz Lestat features in way more than just 5 VC books. So if there's only 5 seasons locked in (hopefully NOT counting IWTV being split into 2, meaning Sam only has 3 other seasons), I'm wondering what these 3-ish other seasons would cover? 🤔 Hour-long episodes are enough to condense SOME of the books into 7/8-ep seasons, but not others.

TVL & QotD are ofc the bigguns, that COULD be condensed into one season, but SHOULD get their own individual ones, IMO.

ToTBT - urgh. I already said I hate this book. NGL I hope they condense this into 2 episodes MAX, as filler. Raglan was basically a monster-of-the-week. We do NOT need to be sitting here watching Lestat re-learn how to poop & pee. And ffs get rid of David, he literally just got in the way; let that dude retire! Having Ciprien come back'd be a cool feature/crossover, but I really don't need Lestat out here traumatizing more black people, thanks. 😒

MTD - yoooo.... What do you even DO with this? XD Like, I can't imagine having a whole frikkin season of Lestat's Inferno, but without Memnoch you lose ALL context behind Lestat's coma, his missing eyeball, Armand's suicide attempt, Louis' suicide attempt, and Lestat's course correction as a character. 😈 It was the fallout post-Memnoch that is so important to Lestat's story; but TBH I can honestly see the bulk of MTD itself condensed into 2 filler episodes tops.

Merrick - IMO this needs to be integrated into IWTV2 as part of Louis' storyline, not Lestat's. Even though it's here that he (officially) wakes from the coma (post-TVA--which IMO deserves its own spinoff season; we need more Assad if they don't cover Armand's backstory in IWTV2).

Blackwood Farm - NGL I want a whole dang season of BwF. 😅 IMO it's the craziest VC book, we NEED to see these people on screen. We'd get that Merrick Mayfair feature, too--but if they do her dirty here like AR, Imma be FURIOUS.

Blood Canticle - 💩 TRASH!!!!! 💩

Prince Lestat & RoA & BC: TBH I think these should all be merged into one season, as they all deal with Rhoshamandes. If QotD sets up Amel early, AND includes MEKARE, then PL should get right to the action. RoA was padded with a LOT of straight descriptions, which can EASILY be condensed on screen with visuals--that's the book that needed to be illustrated! RoA really doesn't need its own season; we just need to see Rhosh established as the Big Bad in PL & RoA, and get Amel's backstory. (I HOPE they'll keep the aliens in, but AR was obviously using bird-feathered/winged extraterrestrials as the secular answer to Christianity's angels, so I'm fine either way. I'll be sad if they cut them all out entirely and Amel's JUST a (human) ghost). As for BC, it wasn't a long book at all; it just had a lot of BIG, iconic moments. I DEMAND to see Chateau Era Loustat domestic tooth-rotting fluff on my effing screen, ISTG. 🙏 This is the series finale--it deserves to give Loustat E V E R Y T H I N G; from the lowest lows to the greatest highs. I need Prince Consort Louis bossed up. 🤴🏾 I need Lestat having a mental breakdown just like Louis did when Daniel was tearing him to shreds in Ep7. I need Armand screaming, crying, throwing up. I need the WEDDING(S). I need the BALLROOM. I will sue.

Naturally, I could be waaaaay off on all of this. U_U
