Do you happen to know why bowhead whales have that little line of black dots on their white chins? Once I noticed it it became so distinctive to them, it seems so unique! Is it markings or perhaps just like, white rubbed off by ice or something??

Hi! Great question! Bowhead whales indeed wear some beautiful "bead strings" on their chins. They are true markings, and each dot indicates the location of a chin hair! In some whales you'll see that nearer the tip of the chin, the dots become tiny and plentiful, indicating a hairy muzzle. See for example this whale captured by Todd Mintz:

There is a lot of individual variation though. Some whales have few, very large dots, while others have more, smaller ones. The white chin patch itself can also be very big, other times it is very small (like the whale on the left, photo by Kate Stafford), or entirely washed out gray, making the dots stand out less (like the whale on the right, photo by WWF).

Interestingly it seems the "coding" for the hair spots is always present, as they are even a slightly darker shade than their base greyish black colour. See? You can see the "chin" dots run almost up to this Bowhead's cheeks! (Photo also by Todd Mintz or another Arctic Kingdoms photographer).

And while the dots always follow hairs, the bottom of the white chin marking can have all sorts of funky shapes. It can fade out normally, have quite a jagged edge, or a spotted one, like this whale! (photo courtesy of NMFS)

Why exactly they have this colouration I do not know! It may have some advantage we don't know of yet. But sometimes colouration also just happens, and because it is neither detrimental not advantageous, it just sticks around.

Okay but it's super interesting how

Din = Power = Ganondorf

Naryu = Wisdom = Zelda

Farore = Courage = Link.

Because Din, in the hylian creation myth, created the physical world. Naryu then created the laws - gravity, time, etc. And Farore finally created life - plants and people.

Din created the body, naryu the mind, Farore the soul.

And the triforce and its wielders so perfectly reflect that.

Ganon is physical power, he is big and intimidating and he breaks things. He is cunning and determined, but that's not what he focuses on. He is might makes right.

Zelda is wisdom and cleverness. She is stall tactics and information and team work. She is a powerful mage with a spine of steel, but that's not how she'll win. She is the pen being mightier than the sword.

Link is courage and persistence. He is the wild card sneaking behind enemy ranks, always moving, plunging into terrifying situations head first. He's a phenomenal fighter with a keen wit, but that's not what will get him through his challenges. He is bravery not being the absence of fear but the triumph over it.

They sit in perfect parallels to each other.

And ganon is reborn through his body - his resurrection is immortality. No matter how low he is cast, as long as he has a body he can claw his way back. He can cling to his power, build it ever higher.

Zelda is reborn through the magic of her bloodline. It's the accumulated knowledge handed down for generations, the unique power she must master, the skills she must develop to survive and get her kingdom out the other side intact. Even her name, the knowledge of herself, is handed down from all the way from the very first. Her ancestors knowledge of her future presence, her stability, is what gives her the edge.

Link is reborn in spirit. He is not bound by flesh or blood. Just like his wanderlust soul he can reappear in any time or place. His variation, his unpredictability, is exactly how he fights. It's what makes him so hard to pin down.

Ganons need to build strength means he can't chase after link. Links impulsiveness means zelda can outwit him. Zeldas stationary predictability means she's an easy target for ganon.

But the other direction?

Fire melts ice, ice redirects lightning, lightning burns fire.

And that's the very essence of the triforce.

obviously what really hurt about the way that adolin was injured during the siege of azimir was how similar it was to thaylen field (honestly a lot of what happened this book paralleled thaylen field on purpose) just adolin almost fondly remembering one of the top renarin moments of all time aka taking out that fucking thunderclast and saving his brother <3. but of course this time renarin isn't here and things get bad. but i really feel like adolin remembered that moment of his brother going like "i can do this i can fight this huge fucking monster because i am uniquely qualified for it. i have struggled with feeling useless my whole life but there are parts of me that were made for fighting these things" and went okay how can i use what i am uniquely qualified for to win like ten different unwinnable fights. oh right i can lovingly bully inactive spren into everlasting friendship. or rather until they make me a mobility aid

I think a really fun idea to explore with Tim would be the idea of him having Hyperthymesia.

Hyperthymesia is an ability that allows people to recall almost every event of their life in great detail. It's extremely rare and honestly doesn't have that much research done on it, but recent studies have suggested that people with this ability are limited to autobiographical memories, people with HSAM sometime tend to show symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and may demonstrate obsessive tendencies.

I think it would be an interesting way to explain why Tim was able to recall his first meeting with Dick Grayson and connect the dots to seeing Robin. Tim does display a lot of obsessive behaviours, and while he doesn't really physically display compulsion (like someone with OCD would typically display) there certainly is a strong case to be made for him potentially having it.

But also, can you imagine how fucking horrible it would be for Tim to remember each and every traumatic thing that ever happens to him as a hero and those memories just never fading. Yes, it would make him a better detective and allow him to be arguably smarter than your average joe, but at what cost?

You can't just break my heart over a literal setpiece, no name character, like that! I totally forgot about the Vessel Hornet kills in Greenpath until jusr now! (Aka, I loved the art. It was super bittersweet and you did a great job conveying the scene's emotions with no dialogue.)

Aw thanks! I always wonder about the vessels and what they were like (personally I believe the theory that Broken Vessel was the “Esmy” Sly deliriously mutters about when you save him from the infection).

It was a lot of fun imagining scenarios where the few vessels we see are still alive and well, and since I’ve had trouble finding fics surrounding the idea, I thought it’d be fun to share my own thoughts on what they’d be like, specifically Greenpath Vessel. Quickly becomes honorary big sibling to Ghost since they saved them. Also Ghost little and can’t dash away from danger like they can (you usually have to take the Mothwing Cloak from the Greenpath vessel), so they must be protected.

In other words: mom friend sibling acquired!

Another detail I really like was how shamura got a heart for each sibling, and in the second to last kallamar, leshy, and heket has a heart for them. And in the last you think there's no heart, but then you see there are 2 small hearts on narinder feet

Narinder is totally the kind of mfer to get really close to showing genuine remorse for his actions + grief for what he lost, but hides it as best he can so he doesn't seem weak (despite the signs being visible). Shamura is the type of mfer that loves something they lost so much that it distracts them from the few people that still love them to hell and back. I am the type of mfer to draw this sequel for you that COMPLETELY ruins the vibe of the last comic:

I love adding little features to my crochets even if no one would really notice unless they could physically interact with them. Like the iron bundle pop out head is something that could fly as a hidden detail if you just looked at it in its default state. All the eyes inside Stakataka. The way Duskull's eye is suspended in its head. How Rolycoly's wheel rotates. The tiny soul core in Eternatus rib cage. Floragato's flower being an actual yoyo. Porygon-Z's head being attached so it can still spin all around. Orthworm's hidden arms. All of Hydrapple's wyrms. Appletun's eyes. Duraludon's hinge jaw. Eiscue's removable ice cube to reveal noice form. When I'm crocheting in these details I always think that I really don't gotta be doing all that because no one would know, but I would know, so of course I have to try. And I like to think that you can still sense how much care and thought I put into each crochet even though you can't see stuff like all the tiny paw pads I put on countless pokemon.
