Float Like A Butterfly... Chapter 5: So Last Season
Summary: Now that Adrien is no longer Chat Noir he doesn't have to get hit all the time. Unfortunately, his luck doesn't seem to have gotten the memo... Or has it?
------------------------------
"So, how're you holding up?"
"Please, Adrien, it's my mother! I'm positively ecstatic!"
"Exactly. It's your mother."
Chloe looked down for a second before her eyes snapped back up, any doubts she had hidden in an instant. "She's finally coming back! I'll finally be able to show her what she's been missing." Chloe tossed her ponytail back to emphasize the unspoken Me. "Now, I've gotta go. Sabrina insisted we do an 'emotional support routine' or whatever beforehand. Ciao!"
Sighing, Adrien stared at his phone for a moment before putting it down. He knew Chloe was grateful for Sabrina's help but it was still a struggle getting her to admit it.
Or getting her to admit how much Audrey had hurt her.
It was one thing to travel halfway around the world for your career and leave your daughter behind. It was something else entirely to completely ignore her. In all the years since Audrey left Chloe hadn't received a single birthday gift, phone call or text message. Adrien would know. Chloe would've bragged about it endlessly if her mother had taken so much as two seconds to acknowledged her existence-
Adrien's foot jerked, striking the vanity table and making the connected mirror tremble. Heart suddenly pounding against his chest as tension built up in his forehead. Distressed expression reflecting back at him.
Breathe, Adrien. Breathe.
Slowly, he inhaled.
Then exhaled.
Again.
Good.
He was okay.
Adrien was okay.
Guilt pricked like a thorn for thinking of his own problems when Chloe needed him. Adrien crushed it with his anger and annoyance but it was still there. Like a splinter that wouldn't come out.
I hate you.
Swiping out of the video chat Adrien tapped on Nino's number. It rang... and rang... and rang...
He's annoyed with me. I did something wrong again and Nino doesn't want to-
Adrien smacked both sides of his face. No, dummy! Nino's just busy or something. Stop that!
It wasn't every day a teenage DJ provided the music for Paris Fashion Week, after all. Nino had to make sure all his equipment was working properly.
The door to his dressing room burst open.
"Adrien, your friend Mlle. Dupain-Cheng will be bringing the last article of the new Gabriel line," Nathalie announced. "Your father expects everything to be perfect for Audrey Bourgeois."
"Doesn't he always?" Adrien deadpanned.
Nathalie stared at his watery eyes before typing something into her tablet. "Your performance on catwalks only has a 99% success rate. He expects you'll do better."
Father thinks you're a failure just like everyone else. He-
Shut up! Adrien felt something heavy settle in his chest.
One of the makeup artists came rushing in and Nathalie gestured her towards Adrien. "Touch up his eyes," she instructed and then left.
Jaw clenching, Adrien sat perfectly still as the makeup artist did her job. He was never entirely sure what the staff thought about him. 'Professional' was a word that was tossed around a lot. That used to fill him with a little pride... Before all of this.
The last person to suggest that a thirteen year old mourning his mother wasn't 'professional' so much as he was 'depressed' had never come back to work... Oh. Adrien had forgotten about that.
Finishing quickly, the makeup artist left too. Leaving Adrien with his thoughts. He didn't want to be with his thoughts at the moment. They were distracting and Nathalie had not been subtle.
I hate-
His phone vibrated as it received someone's text.
Ni-Non: hey dude!
Ni-Non: it's crazy over here man
Ni-Non: break a leg! ;)
Adrien smiled as his unpleasant mood faded to the back of his mind... And if he saw similarities between his family and Chloe's, well, that's why he could empathize with her.
Adrien: That's theater but I guess there's not much difference.
Adrien: Thanks. ^_^
---------------
There was a knock at his door. Adrien stopped fidgeting in the awkward suit to go answer it.
"Hello, Marinette." Adrien smiled in greeting.
"Oh, uh, hello!" Marinette gave a small wave as she stepped up the short stairs and-
Adrien braced himself with one foot while his hands went to her shoulders. Steadying Marinette as she quickly removed her weight from him.
"Oh! Uh, sorry." Marinette looked away in embarrassment at having tripped into him.
"... No worries!" Adrien smiled as he shook his head. Marinette seemed... subdued. Reaching down to pick up the hat that had fallen. "Oh, no." The artificial feather Marinette made for his allergies had come loose. "I hope it's not too hard to fix it."
Marinette looked down. "Uh, y'know, it doesn't really matter. This hat is a complete failure anyway."
"What? No, it's not!" Adrien rose to his feet quickly in shock. "Why would you say that?"
"Because... the queen of fashion, Audrey Bourgeois, saw it and hated it!" Marinette's hands covered her face, voice breaking. "I'm sorry, Adrien. I really messed up. I'm a total no talent!" Her arms wrapped around herself in a hug. "Please, don't put it on," she pleaded.
Adrien's heart went out to Marinette as she laid her insecurities bare. "Marinette, everything's going to be fine." He searched for the proper spot to reattach the feather, fiddling with it as Adrien reassured her. "Your hat looks great. I think it's awesome and so does... my father." Adrien cleared his throat as he managed to fix her hat. "Otherwise he wouldn't have picked it for me. Look!"
Putting Marinette's hat on Adrien walked across the dressing room like he was already performing. Striking a few poses to ease Marinette's anxiety. "See?"
It seemed to work as Marinette gave a small smile. "You got that catwalk down," she complimented.
Adrien rubbed the back of his neck. "Really? Thank you."
"Ah-hem," Nathalie cleared her throat. "We have to go." Without waiting for Marinette she turned on her heel and started walking towards the viewing area.
Adrien rolled his eyes but smiled at Marinette's back as she hurried to catch up. Turning back to look at himself in the mirror Adrien scanned his outfit. The suit may have been generic and a few seams too close to last year's entry but Marinette's hat was fire.
"Okay!" Adrien was gonna go out there and make sure they recognized Marinette's talent!
---------------
Holding Marinette's hat to his chest Adrien stuck his head out in a decidedly 'unprofessional' manner. Spotting Marinette's family and a bunch of his friends in the first row. Adrien's blond head caught Nino's eye from across the catwalk and he gave him a thumbs up.
Adrien waved as he ducked back behind the corner before the photographers could take any pictures of the Agreste heir acting like a kid.
You got this, Adrien. Nino's DJ-ing, your classmates came -even though most of them don't care about fashion- with any luck Alix and Kim will tease you about it for the next month.
That would give Adrien the opportunity to dish out a bunch of jokes he never got the chance to use!
The music started; that was his cue.
You got this!
Adrien posed on the runway. Camera flashes already starting. Strutting down the catwalk Adrien smirked at Marinette. See? Stopping at the platform's end he posed in various angles for the photographers. Nino seemed to be enjoying himself too and that made Adrien's smile come much more naturally.
A small eruption boomed behind him and Adrien turned to see Hawkmoth's latest fashion disaster. Gasping, as his heart started hammering in his chest.
"A fashion show without the Queen of Style!? Glitter-ally unacceptable!" The akuma villain announced. "Where's that ungrateful Gabriel Agreste. I demand that he kneels before me!"
Ugh, what has he done now?
"My father isn't here," Adrien snapped in annoyance. Hearing people running for the exits.
"Well, then. If fashion disaster daddy isn't here I'll just have to settle for Agreste Junior! You're fired!"
Adrien's eyes widened as he stepped back. Golden glitter exploding everywhere as his body became numb and his senses dark-
-Glowing ladybugs swirled around him as Adrien had the disorienting feeling of laying down when he could've sworn he'd been standing. Glancing around, Adrien realized he was now at the Eiffel Tower.
"Adrik- Adrien!" Chloe tackled him as he stood, throwing her arms around him. "I was so scared!"
Adrien blinked in surprise as Chloe set her head on his shoulder. Not letting him go... Adrien smiled as he hugged her back. Enjoying this genuine display of affection.
"Pound it!"
Head snapping towards the sound Adrien saw another Black Cat, this one a girl with long, reddish hair, fist bump Ladybug. They grinned at each other in post battle relief.
I hate you! I hate you! I hate you!
A chill to rival Frozer's ice covered Adrien from head to toe. It was one thing to see Ladybug working with a different Black Cat on the news. Quite another to have his replacement. Three. Frickin. Meters. In front of him!
Chloe didn't notice... Or rather Adrien didn't notice when she'd let go to help her mother. Who tried to fire her own daughter as thanks.
Adrien jerked his eyes away from the superhero duo-
I hate you! I hate you! I hate you!
-Away from the Miraculous holders and forced himself to listen to whatever the Bourgeois were saying. Ears ringing as Ladybug and the Black Cat talked about something behind him...
"Oh, mom. If only you knew what a great team we made!" Chloe trailed after her mother as they walked down the tower's stairs; attempting to capture her attention. "We fired a bunch of incompetents. It was awesome. We should really spend more time together! What if I went back to New York with you?"
"Don't be ridiculous, Casserole- Eh, Chloe!" Audrey dismissed. "First I have to get back to Gabriel Agreste's fashion show. And they better..."
Adrien's eyes narrowed as he looked down from the railing, his grip on it tightening. Heat from a growing indignation melting the ice he felt. What did she just call Chloe?
"Adrien Agreste, right? I can give you a lift back if you want."
His tensed body jerked in surprise as Adrien realized Ladybug was standing right behind him. Throat and chest constricting as his thoughts whirled. Spots darkened his vision as he felt lightheaded. Adrien's knuckles becoming white, the metal railing digging into his skin. A single thought rose above the ringing in his ears.
I don't wanna talk to her.
Giving his best model smile, Adrien schooled his features. "Ah, thanks but-" he pointed down, "-I should really check on them."
"O-oh! Of course!"
Ladybug's face was out of focus but Adrien could still feel the melancholy in her voice.
Powering past his queasy stomach Adrien made his way to the stairs. The sound of Ladybug's yo-yo whirring reached his ears; signaling her departure. Adrien took a shuddering gasp as he leaned against a metal pillar for support. Body suddenly limp.
Breath accelerating Adrien tried to calm himself. Why was he up here? Had- Had Audrey's blast mind controlled him? Again!? He couldn't breathe.
Adrien sank to his knees as he felt his skin crawl at the idea of that- that- asshole reaching into his mind and taking away his free will. He hated it! He HATED it!
Gasping as his rage broke him out of the panic, Adrien steadied his breathing... He wanted- no, needed to know what happened... Which meant getting up and moving forward... Forcing himself to his feet Adrien wiped the sweat from his brow and followed the others down.
---------------
"Remind me to tell your father to fire the person in charge of the Eiffel Tower elevators..." Audrie panted. "This is... unacceptable... utterly unacceptable!"
"Of course, mom. Oh!" Chloe glanced down to see what she'd stumbled on.
Adrien looked up as he fanned himself with Marinette's hat.
And dropped it.
He stared open mouthed at the small, black, octagonal box in Chloe's hands. Heartbeat leaping into his throat.
What the hell is THAT doing here!?
"Ooh! What's this?" Chloe turned the box around in her hands but didn't open it.
Adrien suddenly forgot his exhaustion and rushed to her side. The lie coming easily to his lips. "Oh, I recognize that! They sell them at antique shops."
"Ew, it's old! Get it away from me!" Chloe practically hurled it at Adrien.
Catching it easily. A thrill ran up Adrien's arms and down his spine as the box made contact with his skin. The hairs at the back of his neck standing on end.
Chloe dusted her hands and kept walking. Glancing nervously at her mother. Hoping Audrey hadn't seen her with something so outdated.
I hate you! I hate you! I hate you! The voice in his head said.
Shut up, Adrien told it as he stared at the unknown Miraculous in his hand. Heartbeat hammering in his chest. But it wasn't from fear. No, it was... anticipation.
The corners of Adrien's lips curled upwards.

1998 Film Demeter Rewatch Part Five: Macavity
Like with Mistoffelees, Demeter doesn’t do much throughout the first part of act two. I also can’t find her in Skimble’s number, but I think she might be around there somewhere.
The only picture I’ve got from this bit is only here because of how much Jemima looks like a tiny Demeter:
So, onward towards the part of the show where Demeter really becomes the center of attention. I’ll say right out that screenshots are a terrible method of recapping this, because so much of what’s interesting here is in the line delivery.
As per usual, when something goes wrong, Bomba and Demeter huddle together.
After Old Deuteronomy is kidnapped, everyone scatters. The toms seem to vanish completely. I think they might be out looking for Macavity. The queens go off to the sidelines until it’s time for them to be the chorus. Demeter and Bombalurina take center stage, then Bomba steps back and spends the first verse being sexy at the camera while Demeter starts describing Macavity.
The most interesting thing about this number is the contrast between Demeter and Bombalurina. They both have some sort of past with Macavity, but they describe him in different ways.
Demeter starts by describing Macavity as a criminal mastermind. The whole time, she’s pacing and twitching and jerking around and I’m somewhat surprised that she’s not just straight-up having a panic attack.
Here’s one of the sexual bits. I think, however badly it eventually went, Demeter’s relationship with Macavity started off as something consensual and she enjoyed it physically. But, over time, Macavity became more and more abusive. When Demeter tried to leave him, he kidnapped her. She was held prisoner for a while and observed all sorts of criminal activity.
But, her perspective’s not quite realistic. There’s no possible way to break every human law while being a cat, though it’s fun to joke about.
Bombalurina takes over and Demeter freezes up. Now, compare the first lines of Demeter and Bomba’s verses:
Demeter: Macavity’s a Mystery Cat. He’s called the Hidden Paw.
Bombalurina: Macavity’s a ginger cat. He’s very tall and thin.
Demeter starts out with establishing Macavity as infamous and dangerous. Bomba gives a physical description. She’s trying to be a bit more realistic.
Now, since Demeter probably spent more time with Macavity than Bomba did, why does the latter have the more grounded perspective. I think it might be because Macavity wanted it that way. If he’s a criminal mastermind with powerful magic and army of henchmen, if he’s committed every possible crime and nothing is beyond him, and if he’s known as a criminal to humans, because he’s just that dangerous, trying to fight or run from him would be suicide. When Demeter was isolated, Macavity might’ve convinced her that he was more powerful than he actually was. He has a bit of magic and might be the feline equivalent of a mob boss, in a sense, but he leads an army of petty thieves and the human’s either think a human criminal committed his crimes, or saw him as That Damn Cat, little more than an annoyance.
Demeter, while sort of staring off into space, copies the “movements like a snake” that Bomba is describing. She’s caught up in memories at the moment.
We get some more contrasting lyrics. When Bombalurina lists Macavity’s crimes, she mentions stolen milk and broken glass, petty theft and vandalism, as well as the sort of “crimes” a cat might commit. But, Demeter’s lines imply theft of jewelry and “another Peke’s been stifled” sounds like a euphemism for murdered. The fact that she shrieks it in what sounds like a lapse of sanity backs this up. So, Macavity kills dogs, possibly for no reason other than to shut them up. This might actually be true, since we don’t see much of Macavity in action, but it’s still a far more serious crime in contrast to the things Bomba brings up.
Bomba mentions that Macavity cheats at cards. This was considered a far more serious offense when the poem was written, but it’s still on the petty side of things and Demeter looks annoyed. “Would it kill you to take this seriously? Our leader’s been kidnapped!”
But, I don’t think Bomba’s just failing to take this seriously. She’s providing a more realistic picture of the threat Macavity poses. On top of that, she might be trying to calm Demeter down a bit with these less serious remarks.
And it works. Shortly after this, you begin to see Demeter smile a bit, getting into the number. They’re sort of mocking Macavity and it’s hard to be afraid of the butt of a joke.
Bomba’s quite similar to Tugger, really. Both are extremely horny on main and tend not to take things seriously, but they really care and often try to use humor, annoyance, or spectacle as a way of calming people down when they’re upset about something.
Also, Demeter just casually accuses Mungojerrie of working for Macavity. He’s not around to comment, but Rumpleteazer is and she doesn’t react to this at all.

Pink in the Night- Catradora
Word Count: 4491
Catradora high school AU. Best friends to lovers. Adora is the ever oblivious captain of the school's football team, The Horde, and Catra is just a gay panic crushing mess who's in love with her best friend.
***
“Hey Adora.”
Adora spun around, her hand still on the towel she’d just slung around her neck.
“Catra!” She beamed, and Catra felt a little stir in her chest. Adora was decked in her football attire, exposed arms accentuating her muscle definition. Refusing to get caught staring, Catra twisted her lips into a smirk, shifting her gaze up to Adora’s eyes as a blush began to blossom.
“How was practice?” She asked, shifting her weight and placing one hand on her hip. A defensive pose. Though the only enemy is my traitorous heart. Catra thought with poetic annoyance.
“Great! Though I might have a little bruise forming from a ball Lonnie didn’t aim too well, but it’ll be fine.”
“Let me see.” Catra stepped forward, and Adora brushed her off.
“I’ll get some ice if it swells anymore.” She promised, and Catra rolled her eyes.
“Any more? ” She repeated dryly, eyes roving for a raised spot.
“Catra I swear I’m fine!” Adora’s words were exasperated, but her eyes were fond when she met her friend’s gaze. Catra felt herself begin to soften as well, and an unbidden smile rising.
A heartsick pang only Catra could feel ruptured the peace, and she leaned back against the locker beside her, faking relaxation. “If you say so.” She lifted one corner of her mouth to prove she wasn’t actually mad, and Adora moved to take off her jersey.
Catra whipped out her phone to give her somewhere else to look, but she couldn’t help but peer over the edge as Adora stripped down to her sports bra and threw on a tshirt with the lettering “Etherian Horde.” The cheesy design wasn’t flattering on anyone, so why couldn’t Catra tear her eyes away?
Face practically on fire, Catra ducked her head, hoping to at least somewhat hide her cheeks.
Catra cursed Adora for having this effect on her, scrolling aimlessly through her instagram with her thoughts only on the girl in front of her. The stupid blonde with stupid mucles and a stupid adorable smile.
Actually, Catra had to admit that her own hormones were probably partially at fault too. They were also stupid.
“Ready to go?” Adora called her attention, helmet under one arm and gym bag in the other hand. Catra shrugged her own backpack, and reached forward to grab the water bottle from the blonde’s hands. Their fingers bumped, and Catra jerked back like shocked. After her mini gay panic attack at the lockers, physical contact was not optimal for recovery. And she was nothing if not dramatic.
“Catra? Are you okay?”
Fuck fuck fuck fuck- “Yeah of course I am, I just uh… muscle spasm.”
Adora gave her a funny look, and Catra shoved her shoulder. “Oh cut it out.” She scowled, and Adora burst out laughing.
“Muscle spasm?” She repeated in between giggles, and Catra felt her ears heating as she forced down a small giggle of her own with a frown.
“Yes! Now stop that.” Her voice bordered on whining, but Adora was merely set off again.
Groaning, Catra slid a hand down her face, peering at Adora through the space between her fingers. The slightly annoyed girl cleared her throat, and Adora gathered herself.
“If you’ve finished,” Catra started with emphasis, “want to go get a shake or something? I just got my paycheck yesterday, so I have money for the first time in two weeks.” Despite the fact that she hadn’t had spending money in two weeks, Catra didn’t regret anything. She had spent her last paycheck getting them both matching rune tattoos that read “Promise.”
To Adora it was probably some sweet nod to their promise of friendship as kids, but Catra held the vow close to her chest with an iron grip. Maybe she’d never be able to have this girl the way she dreamt of, but the word reassured her that Adora still wanted her… even if it wasn’t the same way that Catra wanted her .
No one except an obsessive linguistics nerd would be able to tell what they said, so Catra was safe from rumors as well. It was bad enough she’d had to survive them all throughout middle school, after one time a kid saw them holding hands. It hadn’t, and didn’t, stop Adora and Catra from holding each other close whenever they needed the other. With or without a crowd.
Even so, that was middle school. Middle schoolers were nasty little toes and always looking for someone to throw under the bus. Most of the highschool students were mature enough not to care, and if they were homophobic pricks, they knew not to mess with Adora. Not because she was threatening, rather, she was liked by everyone. But as the best athlete in this school, between both the boy’s and girl’s team, she practically had celebrity status.
That said, she also did have very big muscles.
Before she would do something stupid like loose all sense and stare at said muscles, Catra turned and stalked out the door, combat boots smacking the wooden floor. “Come on!” She called, and Adora hurried after her. It only took a moment for the blonde’s track shoes to line up with Catra’s own footsteps, so they were walking in sync. A smile came to Catra’s lips as she recalled memories of skipping together down the sidewalks, arm around each other’s shoulders while they struggled to match each jump exactly to the other’s.
As if on queue, Adora brought her arm to rest on Catra’s shoulder. The brunette scowled, as she did whenever Adora flexed the inches she had on Catra. Instead of shrugging it off, she saw her opportunity and jabbed her elbow, half playfully, into Adora’s side instead. Caught off guard, Adora yelped and stumbled before tripping and going heads over heels over a bench.
Catra peeped over to see her sprawled on the ground, head having landed on her backpack and feet sticking up in the air. Adora glared at her, disheveled but eyes bright. Laughing freely, Catra had to lean on the bench to support herself.
“Don’t just stand there, help me up!” Adora reached her hand up, a lock of hair hanging in front of her eyes that escaped her ponytail.
“Just give me a minute.” The sight of her messy hair unreasonably set her off again, and Catra held up a hand as she continued struggling to catch her breath.
Through her laughter, Catra hadn’t noticed the sound of footsteps before they were too late.
“Adora, what on Earth are you doing down there?”
“Shadow Weaver!” Adora sputtered and attempted to straighten, instead managing to hit her head again on the locker. “I was just uh, I tripped.” Catra muffled another laugh with a cough.
“You tripped.” The coach repeated, disdain filling her voice as she looked over at Catra. Despite herself, Catra felt herself stand a bit taller. Eyes narrowing, she continued, “I wouldn’t want you to hurt yourself just as the season is starting to peak.”
It was clear Shadow Weaver knew Catra was to blame, and also that she had no sense of jest. That, plus Catra had the strange sense that Shadow Weaver just hated her. She suspected it had something to do with the lesbian flag in her locker.
“Of course not!” Adora’s breathy response drew both of their gazes to her, and Catra took pity, snorting again. Extending a hand, she ignored her jumping heartbeat and clasped the blonde’s grip in hers. She had a nice view of Adora flexing her arm to pull herself up, and despite struggling with the physical contact, Catra couldn’t complain.
Shadow Weaver glowered at Catra as if she could read her thoughts. It was all she could do not to stick her tongue out at the Head Coach.
“We’re going to be on our way.” Not relinquishing her hold on Adora’s hand, Catra pulled the football player behind her and away.
“Bye Shadow Weaver!” Adora managed to call before Catra made a sharp turn out of her sight.
As soon as they were out of earshot, Adora hissed, “Catra, what was that all about?”
“She was rubbing me the wrong way.” Catra huffed, continuing to march on.
“You were rubbed the wrong way? I was literally on my back the entire conversation!” Adora exclaimed, and Catra cackled.
“Oh how I wish I got a picture.” She paused to laugh, “and then when Shadow Weaver came and I didn’t help you up you should have seen your face. It was all like “ah no! Betrayal. ” Catra lifted her free hand up and dramatically twisted her face.
Adora sighed, her face melting from annoyance to a bemused smile at Catra’s reenactment. Her curved lips kicked off something in Catra’s chest, and she thought she would do anything to keep Adora smiling.
This time Adora tugged her hand as she continued her walk, and Catra looked down at their pressed palms with slight shock. She’d forgotten about taking Adora’s hand, they had fit together so naturally. Now it came rushing back, and she was frozen with not knowing if she should tear it away or let it be.
Settling for not doing anything and letting Adora take the lead, Catra knew she looked like an overenthusiastic kindergartener had taken a red stamp to her face. That is to say, a red flustered mess.
Taking an extra large step, Catra came up along Adora’s side. Adora fished around in her pocket for a moment, before retrieving her phone. Before Catra realized what she was doing, Adora had angled the camera at their joined hands and snapped a picture.
Ripping her hand away, Catra jumped back, cheeks burning. “What are you doing?!” She spat, and Adora looked at her with slight reproach, though if Catra wasn’t mistaking, she looked a bit flustered herself.
“I was trying to take a picture of our tattoos!” She stuttered out. Catra felt a pang of guilt. I must’ve freaked her out. Again.
“Well we don’t need to be holding hands to do it.” She grumbled, secretly wondering how she could get that picture. Hand feeling cold suddenly, she shoved them both in her pocket with a glower at the traitorous limb.
Catra looked up at Adora, an awkward silence stretching. Adora’s ears were pink as she looked at her phone, and Catra tapped her shoulder.“Sorry, I just…” There were a million ways to finish the sentence, but none that wouldn’t make this any more awkward. Opting to leave it open ended, Catra didn’t finish, instead stepping forward to push open the door with her shoulder.
“Ummm… did I tell you about how Kyle let the frogs loose in the science lab yesterday?”
The momentary tension dissipated as Catra continued her story, animated with grand gestures and facial expressions. She warmed as Adora laughed, the late afternoon sun making her face glow.
***
Catra kicked open the door of Mystacor Cafe, and made her way to their typical table in the window.
“Adora,” Catra turned her head, and frowned when her blonde wasn’t beside her.
“Adora?” She turned completely around, and wasn’t entirely surprised to see the athlete exchanging high fives and greetings with groups at other tables as she passed.
Glimmer waved in her direction. “Adora! I saw the pictures you sent me, I take it Operation Get the Cat-” Her face went stricken when she caught Catra’s eye, and the rest of the sentence was finished also as a mumble, “is going well.”
Completely confused, Catra looked over to see Adora glaring at Glimmer, cheeks flaming red. She was refusing to look back at Catra.
Operation get the Cat?
Adora still wouldn’t look at her, and went back to talking to the cheerleaders, who were beginning to look a little too flirty for comfort. Trying to shake off any tangles of jealousy, Catra sighed, dropping her bag as she slid into her chair. Propping her feet up on the table, she considered the rips in her jeans, deciding that they would look even better with another a little further up her thigh.
Tilting her head, Catra studied Adora. She would look good with a few rips in the sleeves of her jacket… just to spice things up.
“Hey, Brain-Damaged!” Adora turned her head, and Catra burst out in laughter, almost falling out of her chair.
“Did you actually just respond to ‘brain-damaged?” Catra wheezed. The group of cheerleaders who Adora had been talking with looked over at her with curiosity, and Adora crossed her arms, pink tinging her cheeks. “Well, you were talking to me weren’t you?”
“Yes, but still. ” Catra hopped up onto the table as Adora rolled her eyes. “It wouldn’t be the first time you’ve called me that.” She grumbled, and the brunette smirked.
“I think it suits you.” She announced, her voice taking on a teasing lilt. Adora seemed to be seriously considering marching over and pushing her off the table. Both to aggravate her further, and make sure Adora couldn’t literally shove her over, Catra stretched out so she was lying on her stomach. Head propped in her elbows and feet kicking, she concluded “along with idiot” with a wink.
“HEY CATRA!”
Catra started, making a noise akin to a hiss.
“GET OFF THE TABLES!” Glimmer called from behind the counter, where she was working.
“Oh, can it Sparkles!” Hopping off the table, Catra turned to acknowledge her friend with a stuck out tongue. She returned it before turning back to the coffee machine.
“Are you done tormenting Glimmer?” Adora sat down across from her, and Catra looked up at her. Bits of hair were falling out of her ponytail and sticking to her forehead, and there were a halo of flyaways. It looked damnably attractive.
“I wasn’t tormenting her.” Catra emphasized. “Actually, I was trying to bother you. She just had to spoil my fun.”
“I think she was more concerned about doing her job than ‘spoiling your fun.’”
“Whatever. By the way, I was thinking about customizing your sports jacket…”
Adora gave her a wary look, ““What exactly did you have in mind?” In response, Catra held up her long black painted nails with a wicked grin.
“Absolutely not.”
“ Ughh fine, you’re so boring.” She squinted, tilting her head. “It would look good with two little rips on each arm…” Leaning forward suddenly, she was about to slice, but Adora grabbed her wrist.
“ Catra.” Adora looked down at her sternly. “We are not ripping up my team jacket.”
Catra held her gaze defiantly for a few moments, and there was a shift in the air between them. She couldn’t say what it was, but suddenly she wasn’t looking at Adora’s eyes, but rather… in them. Her heart fluttered and her wrist went weak. The moment stretched, and they were only inches apart…
Adora blinked, and the spell was broken. She dropped Catra’s wrist in a rush, her eyes darting away as color bloomed across her cheeks. Catra felt her mouth fall open slightly in shock, though she didn’t know if it was belated shock from the moment or the fact that it had ended. Blood rushed to her cheeks as sat back, still in temporary mental paralysis.
Adora had just looked into her eyes, and then blushed.
But… she had also pulled away.
The mixed signals made Catra want to scream, but was there a possibility?
Adora stood up suddenly and gestured with her arm, turning her face away. “Come on, let’s go order.”
They went to the counter, ordering their usual milkshakes, chocolate for Catra and strawberry for Adora. Mere seconds after they’d sat down, Catra reached over and snatched Adora’s shake, holding it out of her reach as she “taste tested.”
Catra held it up and behind her head, leaning as far back as she dared while Adora reached over the table. “You- you pest!” Adora shrieked, and Catra laughed two times harder.
“ Pest?” She repeated, teasingly mocking. “Who says pest?!”
“Glimmer said it yesterday.” Adora huffed, continuing to reach.
“Actually, that is a very Glimmer thing to say, but not something I’d expect you to repeat.”
In a last ditch effort, Adora jumped out of her seat and lunged. Catra’s chair tipped back, and suddenly she was falling as the blonde reached forward to try and stop it.
It was like slow motion. Adora, moving in an attempt to stop Catra from tipped completely backward, stepped forward and onto a forgotten gatorade. The bottle rolled and her foot slipped out from under her, and then she was going down as well. Falling forward towards Catra while she backwards, Adora threw out her arms to stop herself from face planting into the other girl. Catra landed on her back with a shock, but whatever breath was left in her body left her lungs when she opened her eyes to see Adora’s face millimeters from her own.
A deep blush spread across Adora’s face, starting at her nose and working its way until the entirety of her cheeks and forehead were reminiscent of a cherry.
Neither of them made a move, and Catra’s heartbeat was beating so erratically she was certain she was seconds from a heart attack.
That would be a fun gravestone. “Cause of death: Gay panic induced heart failure.”
Her eyes traced Adora’s eyelashes, dark and full despite her blonde hair. The grey-blue of her eyes locked into hers, and Catra inhaled sharply.
Was there a heterosexual explanation for the way she was looking at her?
Blood rushing through her head, Catra froze as Adora’s face moved minimally closer to hers, lips tingling with anticipation, and thoughts whirring into white noise-
“Hey! Catra, Adora!”
Like a shaken soda pop, Catra jolted backwards, and Adora stood up so fast it seemed impossible. Breathing heavily, Catra tried to make up for the lack of oxygen intake from the last, what- minute? Five minutes? Ten? How long had Adora been there, face in front of hers, inching closer….
“Uh…. sorry.” Adora gave her a hand, and Catra pulled herself up. They were inches away again, and the brunette took a jittery step back. Her hand tingled from the contact, and she shoved them in her pockets, unable to look Adora in the eye.
Bow was looking between them, an unreadable look on his face.
“We fell.” Adora explained, breathless. Catra sneaked a look at her, and saw the pink was refusing to fade.
The possibility that Adora could ever like her back seemed so absurd mere week ago, even an hour, but now… Catra didn’t know.
Ridiculous.
But… was it?
Overwhelmed with thoughts and shaky nerves, she crouched to pick up the strawberry smoothie. It’s contents were all over the floor, and Catra was about to stand up again to get napkins when Adora crouched down.
“I’ve got it.” She started to clean up, paper napkins in hand. Their shoulders were touching, the blonde’s ponytail brushing her cheek.
“Uh, thanks.” Adora turned to Catra, and once again their faces were far too close.
Knees weak, Catra stood up and stumbled into her seat. Bow had turned it upright, and he was now leaning against the table.
“Sooooo…” He looked at her again, one eyebrow raised. Catra gave him a glare, and he raised his hands.
“So.” Adora plopped in her chair, her cheeks still stained slightly pink. Catra thought of the pink contents of the strawberry milkshake spilled on the floor, and Adora’s eyes meeting her own…
It was all too much to take in.
“I just remembered I have… uh… extra, er, calc homework. But I will catch up with you later!” Not even waiting to see their reactions, Catra slung her backpack over her shoulder and tried not to run out the door.
***
Scaling the tree alongside the house with ease, Catra came level with the second floor window and knocked.
She didn’t even have to wait a full two seconds before the curtain was pushed aside. Adora was wearing a black tank top and sweatpants, her hair up in it’s classic ponytail, though it was messy, as if she hadn’t bothered to redo it since this morning. Catra tried to ignore how the tips of her ears felt slightly warmer.
The window opened with barely any complaint, and Adora poked her head out. “What’s up?”
“I’m heading up to the roof if you want to join me.” Catra let go of the branch with one hand, so she was leaning out precariously.
“Show-off.” Adora mumbled, and Catra winked. The blond’s gaze immediately flicked away, and Catra felt a little jump in her chest. Adora turned to grab a blanket before starting to crawl out of the window with some difficulty, despite having done this regularly since they were kids. Catra leapt up the branches until the top of the house, where she transferred to the roof with ease. Adora came in her own time, and settled beside the brunette, shoulders touching as their legs dangled over the edge. The sun had just set, and a hazy dusk was settling over the town as they looked out.
They didn’t speak for a while, just sat with each other. For years they’d been doing this, and they had gotten to the point where silence spoke just as much as words.
But now, the silence was charged, and Catra’s mind was full. Full of Adora. The girl beside her, who had always been beside her. She who had bangaded scraped knees, laughed off mean spirited teasing, taught her how to ride a bike, sat with her when no one else would… all the way up until their relationship now. The person who was always there for her, whether it was to do something small like make fun of Shadow Weaver’s pretentious dresses, or provide a place to stay when her parent’s fighting got too loud.
Fueled by these emotions, Catra moved her hand to settle on top of Adora’s.
Adora started. Catra kept her hand there, frozen as she waited for Adora to make a move, waiting for rejection. Though the action itself was miniscule, Catra could feel how everything shifted.
Her hesitation was brief, but the time it took almost killed Catra. Instead of moving away, she flipped her own hand palm up and intertwined their fingers.
She felt a flutter as her breath caught. Feeling almost above her body, Catra turned to look at Adora. A moment later, the blonde turned her face as well.
The space between them was practically nothing, and the rest of the twilight fell away as she caught Adora’s eyes. There was something there, a wanting, as they searched Catra’s own.
Adora leaned forward, and Catra did the same.
The twilight fell away, as did her stomach. The kiss was tentative, and lasted only a moment, as if they were both uncertain. When they met each other’s eyes again, Catra moved back the tiniest amount.
“Do you really want this?” She asked, her heart and voice trembling with anxiety. This was the chance for Adora to back out and pretend it hadn’t happened, or admit that it was spur of the moment and unwarranted. She could end all of this with a single word. Dread slithered through Catra, but she remained firm. She wouldn’t take advantage of this if it wasn’t okay with both of them.
Adora took both of Catra’s hands in hers, and gave her a wide smile, one that sent Catra’s stomach whooshing and her heart floating. “Absolutely.”
Catra beamed back, full of light. This time, there was no hesitation. She brought her lips to meet Adora’s again, and put all that she had, years of yearning and wishing, into it. Though her emotions hit her with all the power of a comet, the kiss was tender. Sweet. Loving.
When they parted, Adora grinned, looking practically starstruck.
“Wow.” Her voice had taken on this sort of… dorky… quality, and Catra couldn’t help but giggle.
“You dummy.” She rested her forehead against Adora’s. “I love you.”
The words, spoken with sudden bravery, seemed maybe a little too heavy for someone who she had only kissed twice. Or was it once? Did it count as two?
Either way, Catra knew it was true. She’d known it was true for years, but she had no idea if they would ruin this beautiful thing they’d just created. So she tensed, waiting for the fall.
“You love me?” Adora repeated with slight disbelief, but not repulsed.
Catra laughed lightly. “You are such an idiot.”
“I love you too.” Catra turned to look up at Adora, her turn to be shocked. After the kissing, she was expecting her to like her at least, maybe a lot, but…
Love?
Adora’s eyes said it all, and feeling close to bursting, Catra responded by closing the gap once more.
With the knowledge that this actually meant something, it was even better. Catra brought her other hand around Adora’s waist, and they leaned into each other fully. A warm feeling spread throughout her, and Catra thought about how long she’d wanted this. To love Adora, and be loved back.
Adora leaned forward a little more, and every thought left her head besides Adora’s lips.
It was messy and warm, just like the two of them. Darkness was coming in on them rapidly, but Catra never wanted to leave this roof. Not if it meant she got to have Adora.
Breaking apart, Catra remembered that Adora was wearing a tank top, and she wasn’t too warm either with her fishnet sleeves. With slight disappointment, she reached over and grabbed the blanket that Adora had carried up. Adora took one side, and threw her arm over Catra’s shoulder, bringing her in close. Catra tucked herself into Adora’s side, contentment washing over her.
The sky was a shade of blue that couldn’t be described as light nor dark. It was dusky, and Catra noticed the first star. Nudging Adora slightly, she pointed. “Look.”
There was a moment of silence, before Adora asked, “What did you wish for?”
Since they were kids, they’d always come up here to watch for the first star and make wishes. And of course they’d always share their wish with each other, because the “bestest of friends” bypassed the rule about your wish not coming true. Instead, they had declared, if we told each other, the wish would be twice as strong. Because if Catra wanted something, Adora wanted her to have it, and visa versa.
Catra didn’t have to think too hard before finding a simple truth. “More nights like this.” She decided, looking up at Adora.
Her face melted into another smile. “Wish granted.” She declared, resting her head on top of Catra’s.
“What about you?”
Adora considered. “I actually think I have everything I want right now.”
“You sap.” Catra whined, but her words had no effect once she started kissing Adora again.

Well This is Strange and Unexpected [Toshinori x Reader] [Part 2]
<- Part 1 | Part 3 ->
Summary: Toshinori struggles with your unfavorable opinion of his heroic alter-ego, but tries his hardest to impress you on a second date! Now… how do people date again?
4,537 words | SFW
“Wh-wh-what are you saying? You don’t like All Might?”
“I am just so tired of how everybody loves him! ‘I got the All Might special-edition action figure.’ ‘Well I got his autograph,’” you parrot in a mocking tone. “Whoop-de-friggen-doo. And he’s such an annoying showboat—like, I appreciate the crime he stops, but half the time he’s just striking a pose in front of news cameras shouting some dumb catchphrase. Go catch a bag guy and quit bragging about it! But you know what pisses me off most of all—all the swooning and fangirling. Why are so many women even into him?! All those beefy muscles are so ugly, he’s like an upside-down stack of potatoes! Who likes that?”
Toshinori is just staring, slack jawed, at you. Like you kicked his puppy.
“Sorry for going off like that, I shouldn’t tear apart something you obviously like.”
Is what you should have said.
Instead, you inhale, and, “Another thing! He’s not even edgy, or interesting—there’s no depth there, he’s just… all powerful and perfect? It’s so boring! All flash and no substance. If I was going to root for a hero, it’d be someone like Eraserhead. So dark and gruff, never putting himself in the spotlight, letting the work speak for itself.”
“I… I’ve gotta go.” He stands robotically and walks toward the door. Oh, shit. Your heart sinks.
“Wait!” you run after him and grab his arm. “I’m sorry. I was being mean. It’s just, All Might stuff is everywhere and it feels like I can’t escape it,” you laugh. “But if you’re a fan, that’s OK. I won’t make fun of him. I really am sorry.” He finally turns around to face you.
“I meant the phone call. I gotta go. Emergency.” He holds up the glowing screen.
“Oh.”
He smiles and pats you on the head. But he’s more subdued than he was a minute ago, and there’s a pain in his eyes when he looks at you that wasn’t there before. He probably did take it really personally when you insulted his hero. Idiot.
“Do you really think All Might is ugly?” he asks quietly, gathering his things by the door. “There’s nothing appealing about him at all?”
“Like I said, you’re my type.”
He lets out a quiet, almost melancholy breath of a laugh. He turns to you, and wraps his long arms around you, pulling you into a gentle embrace. It’s not a particularly passionate hug—his touch is so light, he’s barely making contact at all—but he’s tall enough to rest his chin on top of your head.
“You’re a strange one,” he whispers.
You close your eyes and breathe him in. He smells a lot like iron and convenience-store floor, actually, could be a lot more romantic. But you feel content so close to this scarecrow, with his soft bangs hanging down and brushing your skin. You almost let out a whine when he finally pulls away.
“So, will I see you again?” You ask, nervous about the answer. He couldn’t have been that serious about that All Might stuff, right? But if you chased him off, at this point, it might break your heart.
“Definitely.” A wide grin splits his whole face as he strikes a heroic pose. “My debating skills cannot be defeated! Next time, I’ll convince you All Might is the greatest hero!”
“Oh my god, get out of my house.”
****
Toshinori couldn’t believe it. Today of all days. First he wore himself out doing hero work in the morning. Then USJ was attacked and he pushed past his limit to rescue his students, nearly died, and once again reduced the amount of time he can remain in his muscle form. On top of all that, now, today of all days is when a couple of everyday bullies decide to hassle him.
He just had to go for a walk instead of getting a cab straight home. Had to stop to pick up medicine, even though it was already getting dark. Were such simple things really so hard for the number-one hero now?
He would laugh if it weren’t so pathetic.
It wasn’t like this had never happened before. Every once in awhile some delinquent singles him out, expecting a weak target, but even in his weak form, on a normal day, he would easily dodge and evade them, quickly diffusing the situation.
But today. Today he was done. He had already gone beyond what he had to give, and gone beyond that again, and he was out.
There were plenty of witnesses in the store, but nobody was going to stop to help, just pretending they couldn’t see. He was practically invisible in this form. Nobody cares what happens to some creepy, worn-down old man. It’s better this way, anyway. What kind of hero would he be if someone got hurt rescuing him?
This was really going to happen. He was really going to have his ass kicked by some random jerks. How had he fallen so low?
Then you appeared.
There was nothing he could do to stop you from putting yourself in danger: he could barely move. That kick caught him right in his weak spot, the old wound Nomu had already agitated earlier that day. A sickening, warm gurgling of fluids squished in his lungs, making each breath a battle against the encroaching darkness.
Run away. Just run away!
You obviously weren’t a hero, you didn’t have any training, that was clear in the way you carried yourself. But you were brave. Brave enough to piss those guys off. You just kept telling them off like you had no sense of self-preservation, until—he saw one of them about to throw a punch at you, and his nostrils flared in anger. He would have to—have to force himself to transform, no matter how it would hurt him, no matter how many people would see. He couldn’t let this happen—
Then you did something his pride would never have let him consider: you just started shrieking.
It worked. You saved yourself, and him, though it was even more humiliating than letting himself get beat up. There he was, suffocating on his own blood where anyone walking by could see what a helpless weakling he was… and now there was a girl bawling loudly on that same floor, drawing everyone’s attention to the intensely embarrassing scene.
Time to crawl into a hole and never show his face again?
He had to hand it to you though, you knew what you were doing. You forced all the silent spectators to admit they were paying attention—forced them to get involved. You had the heart of a hero, all right.
Everything after that seemed to happen so fast. Losing consciousness, learning that you had risked your well-being once again for him with your quirk. The shame he felt, seeing you suffering the same symptoms he was. Then suddenly, you were asking him out?
He was used to getting attention all the time in his muscle form, but in his true form, he was so invisible he could transform into All Might in public and nobody ever noticed. Like there was nobody standing there before All Might magically showed up.
His head swam dizzily when you said that he was your type. How could you be serious? But it seemed you were, even though he had been nothing but helpless. Even though you were coughing up blood because of him. What in the world were you seeing?
You were so boldly affectionate with him—though every time you did something unreserved, you started turning red and shaking, like you were acting with your heart before your head could talk you out of it. Even his hideous scar, and the frustrating health issues he doesn’t like to burden others with, you accepted without even a moment of disgust or fear. You reached out and touched it without thinking, and then blushed. It was so cute.
Being adored and praised as All Might was easy to brush off, but this? He had never had someone pressed against his body so affectionately as this drained husk. As the thing he was slowly becoming, permanently. There was at least one person who still saw him. He could get used to that feeling—that warmth in his chest.
Then his phone rang—that custom ringtone he recorded himself! For a moment, he thought you were putting it together: the blond hair, two long bangs, the eyes, the voice.
But no, instead he got an even bigger shock. You don’t like All Might?!
How can he go out with someone who doesn’t like All Might? He is All Might!
Obnoxious? Ugly?? SHE PREFERS AIZAWA?!?!
Nope. That’s it. That is more than he can take.
But then there you were, pulling at his arm with those puppy-dog eyes, apologizing. You didn’t mean anything against him. You just didn’t know. You couldn’t know. He can’t blame you for having an opinion about a public figure. Even he had to admit his public persona could be a little… much.
He checked the caller before dismissing it. It was Nezu, so it probably was important. Not exactly a lie. It’s a shame to leave early, but he didn’t want you to know how shaken he was.
To be honest, he’s been starting to resent All Might a little, himself. He used to be that brawny, handsome hero, but now… now it’s just a mask he puts on. A flashy act for the crowds, and they eat it up, while his real self is overlooked and treated like a punching bag. Of course he resents it, just a little.
It’s actually kind of tickling that you prefer him this way. Pretty soon, it’s all he’ll be.
But he is All Might, too! If you only knew him better, you would realize how awesome he is! After all, All Might is the same person you had a wonderful evening with, laughing and watching movies—the same person you wanted a second date with. Yes, he’s sure you would like all of him if you got to know him! He’ll win you over!
****
“Next time, I’ll convince you,” he said. Next time.
After 15 minutes, you get a text from Toshinori’s number. “Oh good, did he make it home safely?” you wonder.
It’s a short essay about All Might.
Ping!
Another text from Toshi. Also about All Might.
Ping!
Did you know crime rates fell by over 20 percent since All Might debuted?
Ping!
His confident demeanor isn’t just showboating, it’s about instilling confidence in—
Ping!
Look at this video of All Might rescuing puppies! PUPPIES!!
You shake your head and laugh, a warm smile on your face. Hero fanatics may be annoying, but Toshi is kind of adorable. It’s so wide-eyed and innocent how much he loves—
Ping! Ping! Ping!
Yeah, never mind, it’s annoying. You text back a single message:
lol.
You can practically hear his internal screaming from across town. You snicker. He was right, you are a little devious.
*********************************************
Toshinori was as busy as he said he’d be. After the flurry of texts, it was over a week before you heard from him again. You thought he might want to watch the U.A. Sports Festival together, since he was such a fan of hero stuff (and All Might would be involved this year—eye roll), but he said he had too much to do.
You wondered if that was true, or if he could hear your eyes rolling through the text message. Maybe your snarky response to his hero obsession had spoiled things, and he’d keep on making excuses until you took the hint.
But a day later, he called back (yes, called—who does that?) and apologized so vehemently, you knew he meant what he’d said all along. He was just busy. But he was going to have some free time over the next week, and wants to see you again!
He shows up at your door with a bouquet of pink, white, and periwinkle flowers in his hands, wearing an oversized blazer and tie. It’s like he’d watched an old Fred Astaire movie to figure out what people on dates are supposed to look like.
“Aww, Toshinori!” you clasp your hands under your chin. “What did I say about marriage? You’re not here to propose, are you?”
He looks down at himself, then at your casual attire. “I overdid it, huh?”
“You don’t do anything halfway, do you?”
“I’ve been told it’s a problem of mine,” he scratches the back of his head, giving a lopsided grin.
“No, it’s adorable!” You take the flowers, brushing your fingers against his, and bury your nose in the fragrant petals. You look up at him with a sultry, playful gaze. “Though… I might need to change into something more formal now, or it’ll look like I hired you.” A fountain of blood shoots from his mouth.
You drop the bouquet and throw your arm under his shoulder in case he falls, the other hand instinctively placing itself over his scar, the source of his affliction. He jumps back with surprising agility, as if evading an attack.
“Don’t,” he warns. “Don’t use your quirk on me again. I’m much better today—the bleeding is always going to happen, so don’t push yourself.”
You hold your hands up in surrender. “OK. I wasn’t going to. Probably. I definitely won’t now. It’s really a regular issue?”
He nods. “I’m sorry if it bothers you.”
“No, no, I was just curious.” You take his hand and lead him inside. He explains his condition, while you find a vase for the flowers. He takes off his jacket and tie, folding them over the arm of the couch. With just a white button-up, he immediately comes down to a more casual level, better matching your outfit. He throws his arms wide to ask, “What do you think?”
You think he looks slender and gorgeous, and just disheveled enough that you want to comb your fingers through his hair, and just dapper enough that you want to undo one more button.
“Perfect!” You throw finger guns at him, “Just a couple of slobs out for a date!”
****
Unfortunately, he has a reservation at a fancy restaurant. Very fancy. One of those places where the floors are marble and everyone wears black. Now you feel way under-dressed, and wish he’d warned you that’s why he was dressed so nice. You don’t even want to look at the prices on the menu.
You had hoped this date would be more exciting, considering the first one started with a brawl. That was a real ice-breaker. Here, the atmosphere is so quiet and formal, you’re almost afraid to speak, and a tense silence builds between you. Toshinori doesn’t seem to be having a great time either.
“You’re barely eating anything,” you note him lethargically picking at his plate. “Do you not like the food?”
“No, I just can’t eat much at once, so…”
“But the portions here are really big! Why would you want to come here?”
“It… seemed like the kind of place you’re supposed to go for a date!”
“Are you kidding?” you shout, half standing up from your seat, too loudly for the restaurant, whose more dignified customers glare and scoff. You sit back down and cover your face with your hand. And you just start laughing. A quiet chuckle at first, but soon you can’t even contain it, your shoulders wracking, and your head tossed back.
“Wh-what’s so funny?” Toshi looks scared.
“I hate it here!” you spurt out, still laughing. “This is the worst! It’s way too stuffy, and you can’t even eat the food.”
“I hate this place too! I just thought women like this sort of thing.”
You sputter and howl, slapping the table. “What are we even doing here?”
“We’re getting the bill!” He calls the waiter over, who is happy to shoo you ruffians out of the fine establishment.
****
Out in the fresh air and sunlight, you feel like you can finally talk to each other. He apologizes for being too old-fashioned, and, frankly, having no idea what he’s doing. You link arms, and decide to go for a stroll around the city, stopping at a street vendor for pork buns, which Toshi can eat one at a time at his own pace.
However, out in the city, All Might’s unsettling grin was inescapable, watching from every billboard and gift shop. It’s not long before Toshi starts on his favorite subject: prying into why you are the one person on earth who doesn’t adore him. You would be just as happy to let it go, but since he insists, you wind up in a heated back-and-forth.
“…and he’s always like ‘Detroit smash!’ ‘Texas smash!’ but it’s just a bunch of punches.”
“Th-that’s not true at all! Detroit Smash is when he punches downward to create a shockwave, and Texas Smash is when he punches so hard it blows villains away, and—”
“Yeah, that’s just a bunch of punches.”
Choking noises escape his throat. His entire world has been destroyed. Good job.
He hangs his head with a defeated sigh. “So, you really hate All Might.”
You squeeze his arm. It hurts to see him so down, even though it’s silly that he cares so much. “It’s not that I hate him. At the end of the day, I’m glad he’s running around saving lives. The problem is hero culture in general. There’s so much focus on their ‘brand,’ on their market value. I guess I can’t even blame individual heroes for grandstanding, considering their income depends on their popularity, but honestly—they’re public servants, the same as the police. Did you know the police are still responsible for stopping more crimes than heroes, when you take into account all the non-quirk-related crimes they handle, and the detective work used to locate villains in the first place? But you don’t see their faces all over posters, and commercials, and t-shirts!” You point your finger in a random direction, and it lands on a perfume ad in a store window with Uwabami’s face. Amazing, not All Might this time.
“And your hero All Might is the worst one, with that dumb flashy smile, and big inspiring speeches, like he’s gotta make sure everyone knows he’s the greatest.”
Toshinori has been listening silently this whole time, deep in thought. From the solemn frown he was wearing, it seemed some of what you said hit home. But at that last part, he raises his piercing blue eyes to yours.
“You’re wrong… All Might’s smile isn’t about his own ego. He smiles so that people in trouble know everything will be OK. So they don’t feel scared. As long as the hero is still smiling, you know he’s going to win in the end. Being the symbol of peace isn’t about him, it’s about giving the world hope!”
Your heart flutters. It’s not so much the words he said—you’d heard the same line a million times—but the fire in his voice as he said it. Naive as they may be, you can’t help but admire his convictions.
He catches the smile in your eyes, and gives you the biggest, doofiest, triumphant grin. You try to think of something cynical to say to burst that bubble of optimism. You can think of a few: People shouldn’t be symbols, they should be people. That smile is so forced; it’s obvious he’s hiding pain, and you’d rather face the honest truth, no matter how hard, than have hope that’s a lie.
Eh. Maybe you’d tell him later. Right now, you just want him to keep smiling.
“I know!” He rubs his hands together. “Come on, I’ve got something to show you—this way.”
“You cannot take me to a hero museum for a date!” you grimace.
He laughs, grabbing your hand and leading you, “Don’t worry, it’ll be good!”
****
The sun is orange in the sky over the ocean, painting the clouds with striking purple and yellow streaks reflected in the waves below. A warm breeze blows your hair back, ruffling Toshinori’s long bangs, and swaying the spiky parts like a field of barley.
“Wow,” you breathe, leaning over the railing of the boardwalk. He leans next to you.
“Better than the restaurant, huh?” he nudges you with his elbow.
“You could’ve at least chosen one of those fancy restaurants where the dishes are tiny, instead of a place you couldn’t eat!”
“Yeah, I really bungled this date thing,” he laughs, hand on his forehead.
How soft would his hair would feel if you twined your fingers through it right now, you wonder? The urge to grab him, and smash your lips against his coils inside you like a spring. But… you’re not sure if he would want that. He’s just so cute!
He offers his arm in a gentlemanly fashion, tipping his head at you. You take it, and stroll together down the steps into the sand and along the beach, the sounds of crashing waves and sea birds like music around you.
“You know, this whole beach used to be covered with trash until about three months ago.
“You know, this whole beach used to be covered with trash until about three months ago. This was never publicized, but it was cleaned up by an aspiring hero who was inspired by All Might. Not everything heroes do is for fame and glory. Sometimes it’s just about helping the community.”
“Then how did you find out about it?”
He blanches. “Huh?”
“If it was never publicized, then how do you know who did it?”
A bright red river ejects from his lips, and he doubles over, hacking. That’s one way to change the subject. You rub his back as he recovers, but instead of helping him relax, he grows rigid and more on-edge.
“What’s wrong?”
“Don’t do it, if that’s what you’re thinking. You have no idea how much it hurts to see you in pain because of me. Promise me you won’t do it again.”
“I…” You almost swear you weren’t going to. That you won’t, ever again. But… “No. I wish I could tell you that, so you can relax around me and not worry, but I’m not going to make a promise I can’t keep. If you passed out again, or if you were suffering in unbearable agony, if… if you were dying… I would use my power, with or without your permission. There’s no way I could let you die, not if I can do something about it.”
“Young lady…” he purrs, stepping in closer, “I like your spirit, but… I don’t want you sacrificing yourself for me. I don’t want anybody else putting themselves through hell trying to be a hero for me.”
There’s a tug on your heart, and before you can stop yourself, you’re up on your toes, hands around his neck, your lips on his. He breathes in, frozen for an agonizing moment. You pull away, bright red, stammering apologies. Then his palm is cupping your jawline, thumb tracing tender circles over your hot cheek. He lowers his forehead, knocking it gently against yours, the side of your nose rubbing against his. His breath, so close, catching. Your eyes close. He angles his head, and kisses you back.
Eventually, you pull away, breathless. Your hands grip his narrow shoulders. “Listen. I appreciate you not wanting me to hurt myself for you. But you can trust me. If I decide to take some of your pain away, it’s because I decided to—get it?”
His face says he doesn’t. You pick up a seashell and toss it into the waves.
“Let me explain. The person this quirk is most dangerous to is its user. The hardest lesson to learn about it is how to say no.
“I was young when All Might debuted, and I loved him back then. His whole noble hero thing—always putting others first, always answering a cry for help, no matter how much danger he was in—I admired it. I wanted to be like that. And when other kids learned that my quirk could take away their scraped knees and bruised elbows, I was in high demand. I don’t think they meant to be selfish—they probably thought I was more resilient to pain as part of my quirk, but I just wanted to smile through it like that dumb bastard on TV. So I just kept taking, and smiling, until I was hooked up to machinery in a hospital bed for two weeks, barely hanging on.”
He grabs onto your hand and squeezes, almost so hard that it hurts. A pained look etches his face. “I’m sorry, I never meant for…”
“Calm down, it’s not like it’s your fault,” you laugh.
He flinches.
“I don’t blame All Might, either. It was my own stupid mistake. That’s how I learned you don’t emulate heroes! Noble sacrifice isn’t. That. Noble.” You poke his chest with your index finger to punctuate each word. “When you have something to offer the world, it’s important to know your limits, and to set boundaries. Because once people learn you’re willing to sacrifice yourself, they’ll take, and take until there’s nothing left.”
Toshinori touches his scar reflexively, fingers spreading protectively, pensively over the destroyed flesh. Then his hand clenches into a fist. “I understand… but still… if someone’s life is at risk, I can’t sit around and do nothing. Someone has to stand up and help, even if it’s dangerous. Someone has to be a hero, so everyone else can live happy lives!”
A smile spreads slowly across your lips. Partly a smile of admiration, from the vestiges of your youthful heart that still loves heroes… and partly the sly smile of a villain just before they dive into a victorious monologue.
“You’re right. That’s why I can’t do nothing if I see you in real trouble. If I decide to use my quirk to ease your pain, it’s not because you asked me to, or because I feel obligated. It’s because I want to. It’s because I weighed the risks, and decided. It hurts me to see you in pain, too, you know.”
His lower lip trembles. Before you know what’s happening, his hand is circling your waist, pulling your hips against his narrow ones, his mouth on yours. His lips are thin and chapped, but warm, making up for their lack of substance by softly giving way as you press against them, parting against yours. You let out a muffled moan. Your hands run over his back, exploring every jagged vertebrae and defined shoulder muscle hidden under his baggy dress shirt, finally coming to rest at the base of his neck, stroking the edge of that soft yellow hair you had longed to feel.
“Are you… using your quirk?” he pants.
“No.”
“Ah. Then this just feels really good.” He holds you tighter.

The Grey Palace
So this a book I’m really hoping to actually finish! It’s a horror slasher story, but it’s set on a cruise ship. I’m posting the first chapter for my followers to read if they’re interested in following along with the creation and storyline! Feedback is greatly appreciated!
----------------------------
A sleek grey seagull was perched on the wooden guard rail around the churning green ocean. It shifted from foot to pink foot, ruffling unruly feathers, and squinted beady black eyes up at the giant ship looming above it. It looked suspicious of the vessel, and even more suspicious of the people boarding its mass.
The Grey Palace was the greatest cruise ship to ever exist--or so all the Yelp reviews claimed. It included casinos and spas and waterparks and food! But only if you pay for it, because it’s not like you already paid $425 for a single ticket for your four person family.
It was a colossal sea beast, made out of the finest and toughest extra-strength steel plates and boasting the largest size of a cruise ship in the whole world at a staggering 1,854.25 feet in length and 265.74 feet in height. It had a tonnage of 230,000 gross tons, outweighing every other ship in the business. Its hull could shatter icebergs, its bow could split the sea in two, its propellers were more powerful than any jet or rocket in the entire world. Luxurious lounges and steamy spas promised the best relaxation, the waterpark and Kid’s Club proclaimed full entertainment for children, and the restaurants provided the best food on the seven seas. It got its name from the lustrous grey color it was painted, reflecting rainbows all across the body of the ship.
Everybody wanted to board the floating Palace, and only a select few got the invitation into the Aquatic Kingdom.
But in this case, a “select few” meant 8,700 people.
The boarding dock was clamored with passengers. Families that made the mistake of keeping their luggage on them instead of turning it in to the porters, families that trying to keep all their kids from running off, families already bickering over what they were going to do first, all packed into one area that was treacherously close to the ocean and a giant ship that would easily be able to sweep a fallen victim underneath its mass. One woman had her toddler on a child leash like it was a dog, tugging on the rope every once and awhile when the kid tried to run off. Another mom was herding her family in close to take a selfie, earning disgruntled noises from the children when they had to squint and smile up into the sun. A man was loudly talking to a video camera he was holding, most likely making a vlog for YouTube that would only probably get 67,000 views and 1,230 likes. Worryingly close to the edge of the dock was a pair of kids, pointing into the water and calling out what they saw while their parents obliviously chatted with some other people. Several porters were furiously helping everyone board, sweat beading their brows as they worked diligently.
The seagull watched them all, raising its beak in a haughty manner. It seemed miffed by the intrusion of so many humans in its territory, but didn’t have the strength or size to do anything about it, so it just gazed judgmentally from a distance. Its dark eyes shifted over to the girl looking back at it, then screeched in surprise when she was shoved, jerking open its narrow wings and leaping away into the air.
“Come ON, Violet!!” Ethan shrieked.
Violet staggered to the side, nearly tottering into someone behind her while she attempted to regain her balance. She clenched her fists, growling softly in her throat for a moment before letting her anger dissolve away.
“I’m coming,” She said.
“You’re being SLOWWWW!!” Aiden yelled, earning a few glances from other people because of his volume.
“Sorry,” Violet muttered, hunching her shoulders in.
Her family bustled across the port, getting closer and closer to the gangway with each, but before they could cross the threshold, a ship photographer jumped into their path, wearing a painfully cheery grin and brandishing a bulky camera.
“Would you like to take a family photo before boarding?” She asked, waving an arm to a photobooth set up. The backdrop was of The Grey Palace sailing.
“Can we, Mama?” Felicity asked Deandra eagerly, tugging at her arm.
Deandra smiled down at her. “Of course, dear!”
They hustled over to the backdrop. Violet attempted to follow, but Tobias stood in her path and firmly said, “Not you.”
Violet backed away obediently, not bothering to argue.
She watched as the seven of them posed for a photo, the epitome of a white, rich family. Deandra was fifty-four, but she was constantly being praised for how good she looked for her age. Unblemished, glowing ivory skin, clear of any wrinkles, and dyed champagne blonde hair. Her neck and wrists were loaded with jewelry, but her hawk-like amber eyes were sharper and brighter than the diamonds she wore, always locating every one of Violet’s flaws.
Tobias was like her toy, even though he was older, bigger, and burlier than she was. He was as nicely dressed as his wife, clad in a tweed jacket despite the summer Whittier heat and expensive jeans and a gold watch that cost more than all their tickets combined, but he still had the face of a lizard, dull blue eyes, and brittle, greying hair that he would slather with enough gel to start a fire. But he was rich, being one of the top congressmen in the state, and had a sharp-tongue that pleased Mother, both audibly and physically, and was very easy to walk all over. Violet guessed that was why Mother even kept him around.
Carly was their pride and joy. She had a supermodel body, thin and tan, with long, luscious blonde hair and the bright blue eyes of Father. She was pretty, but cruel, like a diamond wrapped in barbed wire. Her words were always loaded with venom, manipulative and cunning and bearing no mercy or guilt over what she said. She was harsh and cold, which was probably why she still wasn’t married at twenty-seven, and when Violet told her this after her favorite paints were stolen, she beat her into unconsciousness. Violet still had the long, winding scar across her left side from when she had been lashed with the sharp edge of a broken flower vase.
Tobias Jr., or just Toby, was the exact opposite of the man he was named after. Out of all her siblings, he was Violet’s favorite. He was a coward and a boot-licker, but he was genuine and had a good heart. He got Violet into The Walking Dead and once cleaned off her back when Father whipped her with his belt after she talked back over something controversial, but provided little help against her mistreatment, being just as scared to stand up to their parents. Still, it was a step up over everyone else. His dark amber eyes were doe-like and his brown hair was always unruly no matter how much he brushed it. In a way, he almost reminded Violet of the seagull, watchful and cautious.
Felicity was Mother’s mini me and Father’s little princess. Her wavy hair showed the natural hue of Mother’s, honey blonde, but her eyes were the deep blue of Father’s. She was incredibly slick and deceptive, as well as exceptionally greedy, always able to get whatever she wants whenever she wants it. She was dripping with as much jewelry as Mother was, maybe even more, and looked at everyone else with great disdain, disgusted at how ugly they were compared to her. Her voice was like the squeal of a pig, and she often preened herself in any reflective surface that could serve as a mirror. At age eleven, she already thought she was the queen of the world.
Aiden and Ethan were nothing but imps. Violet didn’t even know why Mother and Father had them; there was no point in their existence. They just lived to take up space and time and money, but their parents treated them like they were heirs to the throne. They were near identical, with dirty blonde hair in a mushroom-like shape around their heads and eyes so dark they looked brown instead of amber. All they seemed to know how to do was eat food and cause chaos, often forcing themselves into Violet’s personal space just to annoy her.
That was the Nicotero family. The rich, flawless Nicotero family, perfectly happy without the illegitimate child chained to them by blood.
Violet, the kid who the congressman cheated on his wife to have on accident, named after a flower because her father couldn’t think of anything better than the plant he saw squashed on the side of the sidewalk when he was fleeing the scene after stealing her from her mother’s breast mere days after being born.
Violet, the girl with weirdly pale grey eyes that no one else in her family had and hands that never seemed to stop fidgeting with things and an overly anxious mind that contrasted with a bursting internal temper.
Violet, the library for all the should have’s-could have’s-would have’s, an encyclopedia of everything that shouldn’t have happened, an example of what her siblings were not supposed to be.
Violet, the fifteen-year-old with vibrant petals curled towards her family, but poisonous roots lying beneath, just like her name’s sake.
“Say ‘cruise ship’!”
“CRUISE SHIP!!!”
The camera flashed and the photo was taken.
Violet blinked her eyes; they were sore in the sunlight. She shifted from foot to foot as she waited for her family to finish up at the photobooth. She wondered if they would put it on the fridge like all the other photographs she wasn’t a part of. They never put up the things she was in.
“Come on! Come on! Come on!” Felicity yipped, pulling on Father’s arm. “I wanna get on already!!!”
“We’re coming, we’re coming,” Father chuckled. He somehow had all the patience in the world when dealing with the squealing Felicity, but once yelled at Violet for taking too long to tie her shoes.
The Nicotero family pushed their way through the crowd to the closest gangway, shoulder checking other people and trodding over feet without pity in the process. Violet did her best to apologize to anyone they disturbed, seeing as no one else was, so she walked down the walkway and glass doors slightly turned around, and when she faced forward again, she got her first glimpse of the place where she would be spending the next one hundred days.
The main atrium was a giant room with a high-vaulted ceiling and looked like it had been carved out of glass; every surface was shiny and spotless. There were spiral staircases and grand steps and visible catwalks coiled around the walls, all bursting with activity. A marble fountain with intricately designed leaping dolphins was burbling softly in the center of the room, and King the Silver Polar Bear, the mascot of The Grey Palace, was standing in front of it, waving to passengers as they came in and occasionally taking photos with kids who came up to him. Violet must have been staring for a bit too long because he spotted her and pointed, then waved her over. Violet shook her head and said, “No thanks” but Felicity shoved her over with a shrill, “Go say hi, Violet! Someone actually wants to see you!”
Violet staggered forward, feeling that sensation of rage bubble up inside of her again, but, like before, it dissipated rather quickly, as there was nothing she could do. She merely sighed and looked up at the large grey bear now looming over her.
“Umm… Hi.” Violet said awkwardly. What were you even supposed to say to the mascots? Especially when you have to talk to them against your will?
King waved cheerfully. The head of the suit was set in a petrified, open-mouth smile and the eyes were permanently wide and glowing with glee. It was almost unnerving in a way. Was the person underneath the mass of grey fur as happy as the skin it was wearing?
“Uhh… Sorry, I don’t really know what to say.” Violet said, cringing internally. Her cheeks felt like they were on fire.
King made a dismissive hand gesture, then pat her head. The action felt profoundly awkward, but Violet was polite and said goodbye before shuffling back over to her family with her head ducked. Felicity and the twins exploded into high-pitched giggles.
“Violet. Don’t run off.” Mother said sharply, staring down her nose as Violet.
“Yes, Mother,” Violet muttered.
Carly suddenly looked up from her phone. “We should go get drinks. The rooms probably aren’t ready yet.”
Mother nodded. “Good idea.”
She led the pack through a wide hallway, whisking by other passengers like she was the queen of the Aquatic Kingdom. On the way, Toby shuffled over to Violet.
“I don’t like those people in costumes,” He said. “Gives me the creeps.”
Violet peered up at him. “How old are you?”
“Oi! Rude!” Toby elbowed her gently. He never tried to purposely hurt her. “So… What do you think?”
Violet gazed around the hallway. It was lit up brightly, casting colorful shadows across the painted walls.
“It’s nice,” Violet said. “Nicer than any place I’ve been to. Aside from the house, of course.”
She had been shocked when Mother told her about the cruise a week before her freshman year ended. It was going to be a big family trip, and she was actually invited. Usually she was left out of these things. Being alone at their mansion for a week or so at a time while the rest of her family was out travelling or on vacation had been a normal affair ever since she was eleven.
Toby frowned for a moment at that, then quickly said, “It’s gonna be fun.”
They passed through a set of glass doors and entered onto one of the many decks. Surprisingly, there weren’t too many people out yet, as everyone was probably still getting checked in or exploring. Mother glided over to a canopy bar and began ordering.
They probably spent an hour at that bar, sipping brightly colored cocktails and chatting avidly over their plans for the trip. Violet stayed out of it, of course. She sat at the smooth wooden counter, twirling a pink drink umbrella and scrawling mindless thoughts in a small purple notebook to pass the time.
An elbow as pointy as a dagger jabbed into her back at one point, making her pen streak across her page, leaving a permanent black like through the written words. She clenched her jaw and turned around.
“Yes?”
“Come ON!” Felicity said. “We’re going to go eat!”
“Didn’t you hear us talking?” Father squinted at her.
“Sorry. I must have dozed off.” Violet said.
Carly scoffed. “You shouldn’t even be here.”
Nobody said anything against this. Violet didn’t, either.
They went to the buffet where lunch was waiting, and Mother grumbled about how many people there were, but they eventually sat down to eat, their plates piled with food. Violet got more than she intended, but ate everything, just now realizing how hungry she was. She got judgemental looks from her family, but she did her best to just ignore them.
After lunch, they finally checked into their cabins. They got the suites, of course.
Mother, Father, and the twins got the largest room, one with a queen bed and bunk beds for Aiden and Ethan. Carly and Felicity room together, while Violet stayed with Toby. It was fine with her, really. She rather be with her older brother than any of the others.
The rest of the day was spent preparing for the trip. Toby took the twins and Felicity to get signed up for the Kid’s Club, while Carly hooked up with some friends also on the cruise, Mother went to make reservations for the spa, and Father already began drinking.
Violet stayed in her cabin, writing away in her notepad while listening to the TV drone on. She finally got up and went out when the sun began to set, unknowingly stumbling right into a departure party on the main deck.
Music blasted as thousands of bodies writhed around together. Several people were in the pool, splashing around loudly, while others were watching the entertainment shows with great interest. Violet couldn’t stand all the noise, so she ventured to the back of the ship and watched as the land slowly disappeared on the horizon.
A man leaned against the railing a few feet away from her as the golden-orange sunset was starting to turn a bright red color. After he blew out a wisp of smoke from the lit cigarette he had, he said, “This is gonna be one hell of a trip.”
As the first firework was set off at the deck, Violet replied, “You can say that again.”

master | chapter 1 | CHAPTER 2 | chapter 3
On weekends when there were no games, and when practice got out early enough to make it, you liked to venture into the city square to explore the fresh market. You didn’t always have time to go to the grocery store as much as you’d like to, and this way you also got to interact with the San Juan locals and brush up on your Spanish.
With a huge part of your job being meal planning for the athletes, you liked experimenting with the local foods and coming up with tasty options for them to try. Oikawa trailed along behind you, observing for the most part but also goofing off a little bit here and there. If he wasn’t busy with the club he liked to join you on these food adventures, and you enjoyed the additional company as well.
You were picking through a crate of vegetables when you heard him rustling through one of the bags you had asked him to hold. Looking over your shoulder, you saw Oikawa raising his hand to his mouth with a small bunch of grapes in his grasp. “Hey!” You cried out, swatting at him. “If you keep snacking on my food there won’t be any left for me!”
He smiled as he dodged your hand, stepping back and holding his hand high up in the air to keep you away from taking his snack. “Oh relax, (Y/n).” He teased, continuing to pick off the grapes with his teeth and also managing to keep them out of your reach. “I’ll buy you some more.”
“You’re such a butthead,” You grumbled, turning back to the man running the vegetable stand. You handed over the money you owed, apologizing to him with a roll of your eyes as he bagged up the produce you had selected before handing it over to you with a cheerful grin.
“I haven’t been called a butthead since middle school,” Oikawa laughed, stretching his arms then lacing his hands together to rest behind his head. A faraway look came over his face and he thought more and more about the childish insult you gave him.
“Well, you’re acting like one.” You told him.
He was snooping around the stall you were currently at, his eyes studying everything and trying to translate the words on the small signs. As he reached out a hand to try and study something closer, you quickly slapped it away - making him flinch and wail dramatically. “Wha-“
“Those are nuts - read the sign.” You shook a finger at him, scolding him like a mother would. His eyes widened considerably as he backed away from the stand filled with food that could easily swell his throat shut. “Where would you be without me?”
“Probably lost.” The two of you continued through the market stands, eyeing what was available. “You know, I don’t think I knew how good your Spanish was?”
“It better be,” You snorted as you studied some of the fruit a woman was selling. “I only minored in it in college.”
“Really?” Oikawa seemed surprised at your admission.
“Is that so hard to believe?” You turned from him and asked the woman at the stand a few questions before agreeing and buying some of her produce.
Oikawa went to grab the bag for you and you smiled in thanks. “No,” He started again. “So you minored in Spanish, and then double-majored in Nutrition and kineticology?”
“Kinesiology, Tooru.” You laughed at his mistake. You were reaching the end of the market and moved to sit at the bench Oikawa had motioned towards. “And don’t forget playing soccer on top of it all~”
“Can’t forget that,” He laughed, slinging an arm around the back of the bench the two of you sat on. “Is that why you came here? Because you spoke Spanish?”
You chewed at your lip a little bit, thinking over the question as you looked off in the distance at all the people going about their business in the major square. “I mean, that definitely helped the decision.” You told him. “But there were other factors that pushed me.”
Oikawa turned to look down at you, seeing the thoughtful expression on your face as you continued to watch people walk by and gnaw at the plump skin of your lower lip. It was not lost on him that you were deep in thought, even with the warm sun beating down and the gentle breeze blowing past, your eyes seemed distant and Oikawa was curious about why.
“Factors such as…” He let his voice trail off.
“That’s a little personal, don’t you think?” You turned and grinned at him, letting him know you were only joking but really you fully intended on not going down that route.
“I don’t know,” Oikawa shrugged, getting up from the bench and stretching his back, getting a faraway look on his face until he turned back and focused his brown eyes on you. “These days, it seems like everyone has something they are trying to get away from.”
You slouched a little bit as you gave him a pout, “What are you running from, then?”
“That’s a little personal, don’t you think?” Oikawa repeated, mocking the tone of your voice with a snotty yet teasing look on his face.
You rolled your eyes and stood up, taking his outstretched hand to help. “You jerk,” You swatted at him, the blow landing on his shoulder and making him laugh as he flinched.
-
After spending the rest of the afternoon wandering around with Oikawa, dipping in and out of stores, you set all your bags down on the floor of your apartment and tossed your mail on the table. You sifted through the junk, random ads for local restaurants and television services, when one envelope in particular caught your attention.
Your name was scrawled across the front in delicate handwriting, the name on the return address making your breath catch in your lungs and choke you a little bit. A sudden rush of heat came over your cheeks and you heard a faint ringing in your ears as you simply stared at the envelope in your hand. You got that overwhelming feeling of emptiness rushing across your body, palms getting sweaty as you shook yourself out of the stupor and flipped it over to open.
The thick card stock slipped out of the envelope easily, embossed lettering in glittery foil caught your attention right away as your eyes read over the words carefully. Save the Date! We’re getting married! Below the announcement was a date and two names, both painfully familiar to you.
You felt the heat of tears stinging at the back of your eyes before you even registered what you were looking at, the memories rushing back to you in an instant.
The bar was dark, smelling of a mix of every type of alcohol you could think of - but only the cheap brands, this it was still a college watering hole after all.
You laughed at something one of your friends had said, bringing your drink up for another sip as you felt a tapping on your shoulder. Turning around, you found a familiar face looking at you with those deep eyes and sideways smirk. Your heart clenched a little and you smiled back brightly.
“You made it!” You called out over the thumping music being played from the corner DJ booth. You put down your drink and handed your darts over to one of your friends, asking them to take your turn for you. Tuning your attention back to the boy waiting for you, you were about to go in for a hug when you stopped yourself.
“(Y/n), this is-” You tried your best to put on your best smile and not let the disappointment show through on your face. As he introduced you to the girl on his arm, your heart broke piece by piece until it almost became hard for you to breathe.
The feeling of being pulled into a crushing hug dragged you out of your trance, you lifted your arms up after a brief hesitation and hugged the girl back. “It is so good to finally meet his best friend! He talks about you all the time!”
You nodded with a smile, responding with the cliche “Hopefully nothing too terrible!”
You knew this was coming. He had told you, warned you, that he was going to bring his new girlfriend to the meet-up because it had been a few weeks of dating and he really wanted you to meet her. Your opinion mattered to him, and if he was getting serious with someone he needed his ‘best girl to approve’.
You would approve. Of course you would. You could tell she was sweet, funny, made the same jokes that you would and laughed when you made them first. When she went to the bathroom he had asked what you thought, and you told him she was great.
As much as it broke you up inside you kept the mask on the outside the best you could. Up until a few hours later, when they said their goodbyes, getting another warm hug from her before parting ways. When the door shut behind them, you felt a hand on your shoulder and looked up to the familiar face of one of your other friends.
She looked down at you with a sad expression, opening her mouth to speak, probably wanting to say something apologetic or reassuring, but you cut her off. “It’s fine,” You said, waving a hand dismissively and swallowing the lump that had been stuck in your throat for most of the night. “He seems happy.”
In your small kitchen, a thousand miles away from that old college bar, you stood with shaking hands looking at the card. They posed together in a loving embrace, his lips on her cheek as she smiled brightly at the camera with her left hand extended to show off the glittering gem that adorned her ring finger. It was a lovely picture and you were sure that had it been literally anyone else, you might’ve smiled warmly and immediately sent them a congratulating text.
However, the feeling of your stomach churning made you let go of the card. As it fluttered back onto the table, you rushed to your kitchen sink and gripped the edge with white knuckles and immediately felt the muscles of your abdomen contract and lurch you forward.
With tears streaming down your face and the sound of your dry heaving echoing in your otherwise silent apartment, you felt your heart break into pieces all over again.

something about you;
introduction | masterlist | tag | wattpad
Twenty Seven. November, 2017.
‘Are you sure you think I look okay?’ Isla’s smoothing her hands over the front of her trousers, eyes meeting Niall’s in the mirror. He can see her hands trembling slightly, an anxious look in her eyes.
Maybe he’d been naive to think that taking Isla to the AMAs would be smooth sailing. He half thought that the glitter and glitz of Hollywood would outshine her anxiety, that she would realize that, although the things here are pretty and expensive, the people are no different, and she fits right in. He’d thought she’d feel confident and sexy with him showing her off in front of everyone else tonight—not nervous and shaky and unsure of her worth.
‘You’re beautiful,’ he tells her, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, letting one hand travel up to rest on the skin of her belly. After making Niall’s suit, Paul Smith had offered to make Isla a dress as well, and Niall’d joined in on the meetings, flipping through pages of fabric samples and silhouette sketches with Isla, Ellie, and Paul. At the end of it all, though, Isla’d settled on a custom suit instead: tight, curve hugging trousers and a matching blazer, low cut enough to expose an intricate, lace bralette and more than a little bit of skin. He couldn’t keep his hands off her the first time he saw it, and he doesn’t feel any different now. He rests his chin on her shoulders and keeps his eyes locked on hers in the mirror. ‘Everyone’s going to love you.’
Isla sighs shakily, her hands coming up to cover Niall’s, to entwine her fingers with his. ‘Sorry,’ she says. ‘I know it’s not about me tonight, I shouldn’t be—’
‘It’s always about you,’ he drops a kiss to her neck. ‘You feeling comfortable is more important to me than any awards show.’
‘Don’t be an eejit,’ says Isla quietly, but there’s a small smile pulling at the corners of her mouth. Niall feels triumphant, heart soaring in his chest.

He walks the carpet alone. They’d agreed that they’re not ready for any kind of public appearances just yet—that what they have is special, precious, and shouldn’t belong to anyone other than the two of them. Still, he lets his mind wander a little as he poses, thinks about what it would be like to smile for the cameras with Isla on his arm, his hand resting on her waist, the look in his eyes showing the entire world how lucky he is to call himself hers. For all Niall values keeping his private life private, he’s been feeling an itch lately, a pull to make sure every single stranger knows how much he loves Isla.
It started with Colm’s comment and Isla’s confession, Niall knows that. But he doesn’t think that makes it any less genuine, his desire to start bringing her to more work events, to ease her into his world. It’s a mad, mad place, but he doesn’t want to be in it without Isla, and it makes his stomach churn to think she ever felt excluded. So, slowly but surely he’s been bringing her along where appropriate, introducing her to more and more of the people he works with. But tonight feels like a test of its own, her very first big event, coupled with her first ever trip to LA.
With Tara by his side, Niall stands for quick interviews along the carpet, dodging relationship questions and One Direction digging. He hugs and kisses friends for the camera, talks about his album and tour plans, and tries not to worry too much about Isla, inside the theater with Mully and Emilia. It feels weirder than he anticipated, being separated from her and having to do his job while he knows she’s watching him. She can’t sit with him either, won’t be able to hold his hand when they call out his category, kiss him when he loses—or wins.
But this is better than nothing, he tells himself, shoving his hands in his pockets as he and Tara make the final stretch down the carpet. Having Isla here, even if she can’t be next to him, is as good as it gets for them right now.
--
Winning hadn’t even occurred to Niall.
When they call his name it’s genuine shock—enough that he almost thinks he’s imagining it for a second, until Shawn claps him on the back and Tara launches into a hug and holy shit, fuck, he’s actually won it, an AMA, all on his own.
He stumbles up to the stage shaking with adrenaline, heart soaring, and it’s not until he gets to the mic that he realizes he hasn’t prepared a speech at all, hadn’t even let himself consider the possibility that he would actually, for real, win this thing. For a split second he’s staring out at an expectant room, filled with the faces of his friends, his colleagues, his idols, with nothing to say.
And then he spots Isla. She’s next to Emilia, only a few rows back but all the way on the side, so it’s no wonder he hadn’t seen her before, and she’s got this glint in her eyes that Niall thinks might be tears, her hands covering her mouth, Emilia’s arm over her shoulders. It’s enough, just seeing her, to wake him the fuck up.
The speech comes out easy, then: thank yous to his team at Capitol and at Modest, and a hearty thank you to the fans, for making this possible. It feels like his heart is screaming at him, though, as he clutches the bulky, heavy award with both hands and raises it into the air.
All he wants to do is be able to thank Isla.
--
Someone, Niall can’t remember who, suggests ditching the afterparty, and somehow they all end up at his house: Shawn Mendes, Nick Jonas, Selena, the lads from The Chainsmokers, Julia, everyone. It feels a bit like sneaking out on a school trip, like they’ve escaped the teachers and can spend the night doing what they want, instead of something boring and educational, and Niall feels like he’s at the center of it all, like the hero of the night, like the most important person in the room.
That might have something to do with Isla, though, the way she’s taken off her blazer so she’s just in her trousers and her bralette, the way she’s talking to Julia and Emilia but keeps glancing back in Niall’s direction, smiling privately when she catches his eye. It’s warm in here with all the bodies and Niall’s slowly shedding his clothes, too: his jacket is off and so is his vest, and he’s already undone the first few buttons of his shirt. He keeps catching Isla trailing her eyes over his chest, his collarbone, his neck. The feeling of her eyes on him is like lightning in his lower belly.
‘She’s stunning,’ Nick tells Niall, jerking his head in Isla’s direction. They’re in the kitchen, him, Nick, and Shawn, leaning up against the counter and sipping on gin and tonics. ‘Good for you.’
Niall feels a rising in his chest, pride, happiness. It outshines even the feeling of winning his award tonight. ‘She’s brilliant,’ Niall says. ‘I’m lucky.’
‘Where’d you meet? She’s Irish too, right?’
‘They’ve known each other since, like, kindergarten,’ Shawn answers for him. ‘Dated in school, broke up when he made it big, got back together after things settled down. The whole nine yards.’
‘Oh, hometown hero?’ Nick’s smirking. ‘That’s sweet, bro. You keeping her around for a while, then?’
‘Forever, hopefully,’ says Niall. He and Isla haven’t talked about that in explicit words, but he can’t imagine anything else. He watches Nick raise his eyebrows, tipping back another sip of his drink.
‘Good for you,’ he repeats, once he’s swallowed. ‘She seems like a good one.’
--
As the night cools off, Isla does, too. Slowly but surely Niall notices her loosen up, expanding her circle from just Mia and Julia to include Selena, and then Nick and Shawn. By the time he and Mully come back up from the basement, where they’d gone to fetch more wine, Isla is in the middle of it all, sandwiched between Tara and Mia but chatting excitedly to Shawn and The Chainsmokers, laughing into her vodka soda. He feels a swell of pride again, a twinge of hope in his heart. She can fit in here. He’s known it all along.
He and Mully join the group to cheers and shouts, hands reaching out for the full bottles of wine. Tara squeezes over, closer to Selena, and Niall’s able to fit in between her and Isla, his hand coming to rest on her knee. With a soft squeeze he meets her eyes, mirrors her smile.
‘Okay?’ He mouths, just for her.
She nods, hand coming up to rest on top of his.
‘Isla was just telling me,’ says Nick, who pronounces the ‘s’ in Isla’s name. Mully snorts, but Nick doesn’t notice. ‘About school in Ireland. I never knew you played soccer, bro.’
‘Star of the team, he was,’ says Mully. He squeals when Emilia elbows him in the stomach.
‘We should play,’ Nick carries on. ‘Five a side or something. Isla?’
‘Oh,’ she blushes, shaking her head. ‘I’m pretty shite at football, honestly. Sean, though—’
‘Fuck yeah,’ Mully interjects. ‘Five a side is my shit. I’ll get jerseys made up and—’
Nick looks a little put out and Niall can’t help it: he feels smug. He snakes his hand around Isla’s waist, resting his palm against the bare skin of her back, his fingers playing gently with the lace of her bralette. She casts him a sly look and he feels on top of the world, like a king beside her. And what a fucking feeling it is.
--
‘You know,’ he says, later that night, Isla resting against his bare chest in bed. His limbs are heavy with exhaustion, alcohol, post-orgasm bliss. ‘I think Nick Jonas has a crush on you.’
‘If you told 2008 Isla that one day she’d have to choose between you and Nick fucking Jonas,’ she glances up at him, her eyes glinting with supressed laughter. She looks heavenly like this, Niall thinks: naked, hair cascading down her back, legs tangled up with his, bed sheets pooling around her waist.
‘You’d totally choose me,’ Niall finishes for her, leaning down for a kiss. Isla laughs into his mouth, hand coming up to cup his cheek. When they pull away Isla presses her nose to Niall’s, holding him there for a moment.
‘Thank you for tonight,’ she says eventually. ‘For including me, for being so patient with me.’
‘I always want you included,’ he tightens his arms around her waist. ‘I don’t want to do this without you.’
‘Me neither,’ Isla whispers, eyes locked on Niall’s.
‘Not even with Nick?’ He asks, smile tugging at the corner of his lips. Isla laughs too, crinkles at the corner of her eyes, nose scrunching up, giggles carrying through his quiet bedroom. Contentedness settles over Niall’s body like a warm blanket, like Isla on top of him.
‘Not even with Nick Jonas,’ she kisses Niall gently, lips brushing his as she speaks. ‘No one but you, lover.’

The Things We Never Mentioned (Part 2 of 3)
Fandom: Sanders Sides
Relationships: Logan/Patton
Characters: Logan, Patton, Remy
Summary:
“Believe it or not, academia and relationships are not mutually exclusive.” That was likely true, Logan knew. It was also not the problem.
The problem was his ability to move things with his mind, a blue suit he kept in his bag, and the mountains of red files he kept hidden in his apartment. No one knew that Logan was Bluebird, the cities resident superhero. He hadn’t even told his parents and he wasn’t planning on doing so. Sharing such a secret with anyone was a danger to everyone involved. He refused to do so.
At the same time, he knew that starting a romantic relationship with anyone who didn’t know the truth, was unfair to that person. Inevitably they would find out and there would be a disastrous fallout, but beyond that, starting a relationship on a foundation of lies was a horribly cruel thing to do to another person.
These two conflicting rules Logan followed had never posed an issue for him before recently, but…
But he did like Patton.
This is a three-shot dealing with events set before my story Sometimes Labels Fail set about a month and a half after the mini fics A Coffee Shop Meet Cute and A Coffee Shop Incident Report.
Notes: Superhero AU, Surgery, Medical Procedures
Fair warning, I found while writing this that I actually have no idea how emergency surgery works and so had to boldly guess.
Things to not have be your last line of a chapter if you’re an Emergency Room surgeon “I’ll, um, see you later. Probably not today, but later.”
Things to not have be your last line of a chapter if you’re a secret superhero “Somebody kill me.”
Part 1
It was calm night at work. Which, Remy thought with a wince, was probably not a good thing to think when one worked in an ER. He’d definitely just jinxed it. If some vengeful god decided to crash a bus of innocent people because Remy dared to have the thought that it was a slow night, then that god was an asshole and Remy refused to feel guilty about it.
Remy had only been working in this ER for a few months, but he’d already gotten a feel for how things worked on most nights. It was only about 9pm, but Remy knew he had a long night ahead of him and there was a nice break in his duties, so he was gallivanting off to the break room to snag himself a cup of coffee (the break room coffee was horrible, but it was a necessity) when the city alarms went off.
Most places had televisions set up so people could see the drama unfolding when supervillains attacked the city, but the Emergency Room had one in just about every room that staff frequented which were linked with the alarms so they turned on automatically when the alarm sounded. The staff had to be prepared for the possible influx of patients after all. So, Remy got a first-row seat to the newest super powered fist fight.
The scene on the screen was a fight between two very well-known supers. The villain, Telemonger had been around for almost a decade at this point. She had telekinesis and had a tendency to show up to cities and rain down destruction. She was an A level B in Remy’s book.
The hero, Bluebird, had the same powers but was much newer. He’d only been on the scene for a little over two years, but he was pretty good and had a good standing in the city he protected. People loved him. Beyond the fact that statistically the body counts when he was the one fighting were the lowest in the country, he also just seemed like an okay dude to most people, Remy included. Superheroes weren’t always as heroic as people would wish and sometimes it seemed like they were more going out for notoriety than a desire to help people. Bluebird, on the other hand, didn’t seem to give a flying fuck about statues, keys to the city, hero turf wars, or publicity stunts. Remy could respect that.
So, someone might forgive the nurse if he felt a little nervous about the fight where for most matchups, he’d just be eating popcorn and hoping civilians didn’t die.
They were on the outskirts of the city near the six-lane highway coming into town, both hovering only slightly off the ground and facing each other. The cause of the conflict was clear. There was a passenger train hovering over Telemonger’s head. There wasn’t a train track anywhere near that location, so Remy imagined the people on that train were having quite the fucking day. Bluebird was clearly saying something to her, but this part of town wasn’t set up for this sort of drama and news casters were desperately trying to get the cameras and the long distant microphones working so Remy couldn’t understand what he was saying.
He did, however, very easily understand the response.
She tossed the train right toward the highway. It slowed in midair and stopped only a few feet from crashing on top of the turbine interchange. Remy winced in sympathy. He had never used telekinetic powers himself, but he knew enough theory. Bluebird was strong and had clear potential to get stronger, but he was relatively unpracticed and that had to be quite the strain. While he was distracted, Telemonger sent a piece of concrete directly at his unprotected stomach. He was bowled over by it. Remy could see the train shudder in the air, but somehow it remained there instead of crushing the cars beneath it. Telemonger waved her arm at his face and there was nothing the eye could see, but by the way Bluebird went careening backwards onto the ground, Remy could guess the strength of the hit. The train still didn’t fall though, and she landed to stalk forward toward him with focused intensity.
Oh, Remy realized with sudden clarity. She was here for Bluebird, wasn’t she? This was targeted. As Remy said, he had clear potential and a hero’s will. She was here to nip that in the bud. She didn’t give two shits about the civilians. They were tools for her to get to Bluebird because she knew they weren’t tools to him.
Bluebird suddenly shot straight up in the air flying fast enough that the cameras set to focus on him couldn’t track him. The train was jerked up suddenly and moved a good distance away from the highway over a field before being let down gently.
Telemonger chased after him, tossing ripped up concrete and other objects at him while he did his best to dodge. One he managed to catch as it zoomed by him and redirect in a circle to whip back at her. She just barely dodged. She appeared to grow frustrated with that and spread out her arms before clapping her hands hard in a move Remy recognized from news casts. A wave of force slammed into Bluebird, but Bluebird did something Remy and surely Telemonger had not been expecting. Instead of getting distracted cushioning his own fall, his own hand lashed out and, distracted, she went flying. Telemonger’s head slammed against one of the interstate ramps and she fell. She did not get up.
It had been a decision, clear as day. Remy could see it. She could have easily won that fight and when she did, she would have hurt people. Bluebird had seen an opportunity to take her out. He took it.
Bluebird hit the ground, probably not with as much impact as a person without powers would have, but with more force than someone who could fly should have. He also didn’t move after he hit.
It felt like the whole hospital, no, the whole city, went silent for a long moment.
Then, pandemonium.
People started rushing every which way, preparing for the inevitable conclusion of what was still happening on screen as first responders scrambled onto the scene. Remy hadn’t been here long enough to know what to do in this sort of situation and ended up just allowing himself to be pushed out of the way as things were prepped. Somehow all of that pushing managed to get him right smack dab in the middle of everything.
“You!” one of the higher ups said pointing to him. “In trauma room 2. They need a nurse. Now.” And Remy was definitely not going to argue right now. He scrambled to obey.
When he’d gotten in the correct outerwear and washed his hands, he entered the room. There were a couple of people already in the room that Remy vaguely recognized. There was an anesthesiologist and a surgical tech prepping the room as well as a surgeon. He’d met the surgeon once when he’d given Remy a cookie a couple months before. By reputation, Remy knew that, despite being pretty young, barely older than Remy himself, he was probably one of the best surgeons in the emergency room that night.
“Good,” Dr. Sanders said when he saw Remy come in. He did not look like the friendly, bubbly man who had offered Remy food and a smile. He looked serious, calm, and ready for whatever life could throw at him. “If he’s conscious at all when he gets here, get any information you can,” he told Remy and oh, oh shit. Was this what Remy thought this was?
Well, he couldn’t chicken out now.
He nodded at the doctor and the doctor nodded back before turning to the surgical tech and continuing to help prep everything right.
It was probably less than a minute later when the patient arrived. Bluebird was wheeled in by two other nurses and someone who seemed to be a first responder judging by the uniform.
“I’m with the mask,” the first responder said. She was an older lady with a serious face.
“Get washed up in there,” Dr. Sanders said pointing, “there’s scrubs and a window. Everyone else non-essential out.”
She nodded and rushed over to the indicated room. Being ‘with the mask’ meant she was one of the first people on the scene and was responsible for making sure the superhero wouldn’t be unmasked in medical procedures. It was called the masking courtesy and while all medical professionals were supposed to adhere to it, not everyone could be trusted to do so. She’d made the choice to take on the legal responsibility to protect Bluebird’s identity until such a time as he could make decisions himself or was dead.
Oh god. Remy really hoped not dead. The bitch had probably just saved the city from being razed down and eaten pavement for his efforts. Remy didn’t particularly want to watch him die after that.
He could feel the first responder’s eyes drilling into his back as he approached Bluebird, and he very carefully kept his hands far away from his face and in view of the window. Bluebird’s eyes flickered to him when Remy leaned over him a bit. He was still conscious, but it seemed just barely. “Hey buddy,” Remy said. “We’re going to let you sleep in a minute, but I need you to stay awake for me for just a bit. We don’t have any medical history for obvious reasons and I’m not going to ask you who you are, but is there anything we need to know? Allergies, blood conditions, stuff like that?”
Bluebird thought about it for a long moment and Remy wasn’t sure if he was going to get a response. “No,” he finally gritted out, his voice clearly pained.
“Okay that’s good. We’re going to take care of all of that okay. We’ll fix you up. You know what’s happening? We’re going to have to do some surgery”
“Yes,” he said. “You have my permission.”
“Okay, good, that’s good,” Remy said. Apparently, those words had taken a lot out of him because his eyes started to drift closed. “Hey, hey, come back for a sec. Do you know your blood type?”
There was a slow blink and his eyes didn’t focus, but he still said, “A positive.”
“Possible drugs in your system?”
No response. He was still awake, but he wasn’t fully aware.
“Hey buddy, stay with me.”
“…No.”
“A DNR?”
“No.”
The first responder had gotten all washed up and was in scrubs. She came back over to them. Remy gave her a tight nod. “I think we’re good to go,” Remy said. At least as much as they could be.
“We’re going to get you started on some pain meds now,” the anesthesiologist told Bluebird. He made a sound in response to the new voice, but he seemed to not be quite all there anymore even before the drugs started to hit his system.
Dr. Sanders finished whatever prep he’d been doing and came back over to lean over and address the superhero. “Hello I-” but he was interrupted when Bluebird’s eyes managed to focus on his face
“Patton?” Bluebird slurred, eyebrows crinkling in confusion as he blinked up blearily. “Why are you a doctor?”
Dr. Sanders went still. Remy went still. Everyone in the room went still. He didn’t know, clearly, Remy thought. Whoever the man was behind the mask, Dr. Sanders knew him, but he didn’t know he knew him.
For a long moment, the only sound in the room was the heart monitor.
“This,” Dr. Sanders said softly, but there was something hard and deadly in his tone, “never leaves this room.” He looked up and met each of their eyes one by one. “If it does, I will personally make sure your life is ruined.” Remy believed him.
The anesthesiologist nodded, fear in her eyes and Remy followed suit along with the surgical tech. The first responder pressed her lips together and inclined her head. Dr. Sanders took a breath to steel himself. “Then we have a surgery to perform.”
No one in that room ever said a word about that night to each other or anyone else (at least not for many, many years and even then it was only Remy and the surgeon with the superhero himself in the room). Yet, Remy found himself eating lunch with the surgical tech often over the years to come and always got a birthday card from the anesthesiologist once she’d moved away. They all showed up at the first responder’s retirement party a few years later and her funeral a few years after that. As for the man who was called “Patton” by a man in a mask that night, well, Remy would find, he ended up knowing him very well.

But I Like One Piece (13)
There’s a lot of adults outside the compound.
There’s Ino’s dad, who’s fussing over her a lot, and Chouji’s dad, who waves at her, and a guy with spiky hair and a white chevron on his nose who leaps down from the roofs with Kiba, Akamaru and Sakura under his arms, placing them down before leaping away again.
Bigger Shikamaru then makes a face and pulls the hand on her back away to reveal spots of blood. “What happened here?”
“A trap got set off.” She says. “It was gonna hurt Chouji, so me and Ino got in the way.”
Bigger Shikamaru glances at her suspiciously. “Right. And how did this trap get set off?”
She decides discretion is the better part of valor and shrugs, wincing at the movement. “Lots of tripwires. Hard to tell.”
Bigger Shikamaru gives a slow nod, like he doesn’t quite believe her. “Uh huh. And why were there so many tripwires?”
“Because Uchiha’s scared.” She says, looking the man dead in the eye. “He’s really, really scared of that man coming back to finish the job. And he has no one to look after him, so he’s trying to protect himself. And us. By fighting us to make us stronger, or something. He didn’t explain it well.”
Bigger Shikamaru appears inscrutable during her tirade, but he looks away when she keeps staring pointedly at him, with another muttered “Troublesome.”
The click of a camera shutter has her looking over to see Lee taking pictures of the spiky haired guy and another guy with floppy hair, who are posing dramatically for photos. Kiba’s attempting to photobomb them with little success as Shikamaru watches.
“Right.” Bigger Shikamaru hitches her higher on his hip, raising his voice. “Chouza, can you get the rest of them home? Inoichi and I need to get these two to the hospital.”
Lee insists on coming along with them.
Once they realize what’s going on, Sakura and Chouji beg to come along too. It sort of snowballs from there, so they end up with a gaggle of children and Ino, Shikamaru, and Chouji’s dads causing a bit of a stir when they all enter the hospital’s reception area.
She sees the same nice doctor from when she bit her lip last time, with the blond hair and pink eyes.
The nurse is nowhere to be seen.
She tells the nice doctor she didn’t bite her lip at all, even when it really hurt, while he’s doing something with the green glow to her shoulders that makes them stop hurting.
He pats her head and gives her a lollipop, and then gives extra ones to Kiba, Hinata, Shino, and Sakura with a wink and vague compliments to the mysterious medical experts for their good work.
Kiba doesn’t stop grinning for the rest of the afternoon, Shino’s insects buzz gently which she thinks means he’s happy, and even Hinata seems quietly pleased.
Chouji’s dad walks her, Lee and Sakura home after they get the confirmation that Ino’s going to be fine, while Shikamaru’s dad takes Hinata, Kiba, Shino, and Uchiha.
Sakura’s quiet and subdued the whole way home, lollipop in her cheek, rubbing her fingers together every so often. She gives a weak little “bye” when they drop her off at her house.
Okaa-san looks particularly harried when she opens the door and takes note of the newly-healed marks on her back and the state of her blood-stained and dusty dress.
Her mother sends her upstairs to have a wash and get changed while Chouji’s dad has a talk with her and Otou-san.
By the time she comes back down, Chouji’s dad has gone home and her parents are sitting around the dinner table as Lee shows them his photos.
“Mayu-chan.” Otou-san says, holding up a picture of her and Ino crouched over Chouji with silver streaks soaring past them like deadly shooting stars. “Not that we aren’t proud of you for looking after your friends, but could you work a little harder to avoid getting hurt too please?”
“I’ll try, Otou-san.” She choruses guiltily.
It seems like what happened has become the talk of the village by dinner time.
Though she could be biased because that happens to be the time Gai-sensei bursts in, babbling on about explosions and grievous wounds and youth and her being sick on Anko’s shoes.
This earns her another week-long cooking ban, on the grounds that it might be a bug and not evil chakra that made her throw up.
Even Iruka-sensei brings it up at Ichiraku’s the following night.
“I heard you had an eventful day yesterday.” He says politely while they’re waiting for their noodles. He seems a bit more at ease now Naruto and Lee aren’t there.
“Yeah.” She sighs, tracing the woodgrain with her finger. “It’s just—ugh.”
Iruka-sensei is nice, so he doesn’t chuckle at her little exclamation of disgust and waits for her to explain herself.
“It’s just—” She throws her hands up at not knowing what it “just” is and decides to start over from what she does know. “Uchiha is not a bad person. He’s dumb and awkward and— whatever, but he’s not bad. He’s just scared. And alone. And everyone thinks he knows what he’s doing because the teacher keeps saying he’s a prodigy and that he’s the best at everything—but he has no shi–blooming clue.”
Iruka-sensei nods seriously, brows furrowing, so she continues. “But he doesn’t know that he doesn’t—or he thinks that since everyone’s calling him a prodigy that he’s supposed to. So when he got scared about the man who murdered his clan coming back because of the thieves, he tried to protect himself with the wires and traps, because there’s no adults who’ll defend him. And then he tried to have everyone over to defend us too, because he’s not a bad person, he’s just kinda dumb and paranoid, y’know?”
“I...think I do know, yes.” Iruka-sensei says slowly, like he’s realizing something.
“Yeah—and before me and Naruto went over and cleaned his kitchen, his kitchen was a tip, because he had no idea what to do with all this food people were giving him!” She turns to Teuchi-sama. “I mean, he was just eating white rice and uncooked tomatoes everyday! It was like when I met Naruto, except he had all this food when Naruto had nothing, but he didn’t know what to do with it, so it was all rotting and going to waste!”
Teuchi-sama winces.
“That must’ve stunk something awful!” Ayame-sama chirps.
“Sanji as my witness it did.” She groans, covering her face while Otou-san carefully pats her back.
“Nobody was feeding Naruto?” Iruka-sensei interrupts, brows drawn down.
“Not from what we could see.” Okaa-san replies, daintily sipping at her water. “He’d be chased out of the market. I think Ichiraku’s was the only place he could get a square meal, until Mayu-chan started feeding him.”
Teuchi-sama nods. “He was our favorite customer. Still is, in fact.”
“Mayu with her little lunchboxes.” Otou-sama smiles nostalgically. “Up at the crack of dawn, carrying around those sheets of paper with what he liked and didn’t like on them.”
She squirms, cheeks heating up. “I didn’t know him then.” She complains. “But he was hungry. I couldn’t leave him hungry.”
Teuchi-sama nods approvingly as he slides a bowl of miso ramen in front of her.
Iruka-sensei is quiet while he eats.
“What did you tell him.” Uchiha growls at lunch on Monday.
She blinks in confusion, about to bite into her onigiri. “What did I tell who?”
Uchiha looks pained, his grilled sandwich leaking tomato juice and pesto in his grip.
“The Hokage,” He grits out. “Has determined that I am not suited to living on my own because of something one of you said. So I now have this chunin living in my house and leaving his stupid porn everywhere.”
She winces. “But I haven’t seen the Hokage all weekend. He was with Naruto, and Naruto wasn’t with us.”
“We did hear the explosion.” Naruto pipes up unhelpfully. “It really freaked his mask guys out—we thought the village was under attack or something when we heard it, believe it!”
Sasuke glares at them all, taking a mutinous bite of his sandwich.
“Mayu.” Shikamaru says. “Do you know what my dad does?”
She frowns as she swallows and takes another bite. “Tactician?”
Shikamaru’s smile is slow and spiteful. “He’s the Jounin Squad Leader of Konoha. Second only to the Hokage himself.”
She stops chewing.
Oh. Oh.
Whoops.
Uchiha looks between the two of them, growing redder and redder with each passing second.
“TRAITORS!!!” He howls finally, and flings himself across the table at Shikamaru.
They all get detention again.
She’s really not sure how long the teacher expects to keep justifying things with “you’re friends and supposed to control each other” when he’s the authority figure here.
Though maybe her telling him this wasn’t the best idea.
“Well, you weren’t wrong.” Chouji says loyally.
“Thank you Chouji.” She replies.
“Still a dumb thing to say.” Naruto adds.
She places her hand over his mouth. “Sssh.”
He licks it again.
While they’re wrestling, she hears Sakura ask Uchiha, “Are you gonna be okay, Sasuke-kun?”
Uchiha snorts. “I’ll be fine. I just have to convince the Hokage that I’m strong enough to live on my own. And to do that, I need to get rid of the trespasser in my home.”
“...How are you gonna do that?” Ino asks, sounding a lot more wary than she has in previous Uchiha conversations.
He grunts in a way that conveys indecision, or maybe constipation.
“What if you pranked him?” Naruto suggests from where she’s almost managed to force her spit-contaminated arm to touch his cheek. “I know some pretty good ones that the jerks in the market never saw coming!”
Uchiha pauses.
His lips curl into a slow, cruel smirk.
She’s not privy to all the details, because Naruto is sworn to solemn secrecy by the prankster’s code.
What she does know is that the chunin who leaves his porn everywhere is subjected to potent itching powder in every fabric item he attempts to use, and somehow becomes convinced that the ghosts of the Uchiha clan would curse his family with pimply skin for every generation thereafter if he did not vacate the premises immediately.
Sasuke’s victorious mood is dampened when the Hokage apparently sends a new chunin to live with him the very next day.
This chunin apparently has a bad habit of talking down to children, no matter whether they’re the last remnants of their clan or not, and abusing his new position to bring home “friends”.
Uchiha takes this as a declaration of war.
He ends up mobbed by every cat from here to Kusagakure thanks to a potent mixture of valerian, catnip, and a secret ingredient that Uchiha refuses to divulge which was mixed into his shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in small enough increments to be unnoticeable until it was too late.
The Hokage sends a jounin.
Kiba ends up recruited to the cause.
The jounin somehow ends up ingesting enough laxatives to put a small monkey out of commission, and then has his all-black ensemble and glasses forcibly dyed many colors thanks to the liberal application of industrial-strength paint.
The Hokage sends Anko.
The ensuing carnage results in the statue of the Niidaime losing its nose and has Uchiha lying low for three weeks, alternating between hiding in her and Sakura’s houses and Naruto’s apartment.
A few days before their finals, Uchiha comes in looking oddly...defeated.
“The Hokage and the Council say that unless I accept the next caretaker they provide for me, I’m going to go into the Orphanage and the Uchiha lands will be forfeit.”
Hinata covers her mouth with her hands. Ino and Kiba sit there, silent and slack-jawed. Chouji pushes away his food and Shikamaru actually sits up. Shino’s insects stop buzzing altogether.
“They can’t do that, can they?” Naruto says, looking around for confirmation. “I mean, that’s your home, right? It’s yours.”
“But Sasuke-kun’s technically a ward of state and has to do what they say.” Sakura says slowly. “Until he becomes a genin or comes of age as a civilian.”
“And that’s eighteen or something, right?” She adds with a heavy heart.
Uchiha puts his head down on the table.
“Hey, that’s rough man.” Kiba says, reaching out to pat him on the shoulder. “I’m sorry.”
Akamaru strides down the table and settles himself next to Uchiha’s head, gently licking his cheek until the boy turns and buries his hand in the puppy’s soft fur.
“Did they say who it’ll be?” She asks gently, pushing her BLT over to him.
He shakes his head slowly, lifting the sandwich and taking a bite. “The Hokage only said they’ll be there to greet me after school.”
“Well, whoever they are, they can’t be worse than Anko, right?” Ino says, trying to be upbeat.
Everybody at the table shudders.
They stand with him in solidarity at the end of the Academy day.
The other parents and children look at them strangely, a group of clan kids and a few civilians bunched together around the last Uchiha like a protective barrier, but no one comes forward to try and take him.
It isn’t until the last of them are leaving that someone arrives.
Iruka-sensei comes out of the Academy building, carrying a suitcase.
“Ah, Ketsugi-chan, Lee-kun, Uzumaki-kun!” He says, smiling brightly. “How are you doing?”
“We are well, thank you Iruka-sensei!” Lee says. “We are waiting with Uchiha-kun for his new guardian!”
Iruka-sensei’s eyes soften and he kneels down. “So you’re Sasuke-kun, huh? My name is Umino Iruka. It’s nice to meet you.”
Uchiha averts his eyes and stares stubbornly at the floor.
“I don’t want you in my house.” He says. “But the Hokage says if I don’t I have to go to the Orphanage.”
Iruka-sensei winces. “I heard about that. Do you want me to stay in one of the branch houses then? I just cancelled my apartment contract with my landlord, but I’m sure if I begged hard enough, she’d let me stay there for longer until we sort out what you’re comfortable with.”
Uchiha peers at him suspiciously. “...Okay. Do that.”
Suddenly Iruka-sensei’s stomach gurgles.
He blushes. “Ah, do you mind if we get some food first? There’s a pretty good ramen place I know.”
“Ichiraku’s?” Naruto bursts in eagerly.
“We’re not feeding you.” Uchiha says dismissively, ignoring Naruto’s cry of betrayal.
He begins to stride off down the path, only to turn when the teacher doesn’t follow. “Well? It’s annoying if you’re hungry.”
Iruka-sensei’s mouth quirks into a smile.
Somehow, she thinks as the teacher and boy disappear down the path, discussing one of the pranks that befell his hapless predecessor, this might turn out alright.
It’ll certainly be better than Anko.

It was the day Jared and Lexi were traveling to L.A. and although Lexi was cool, calm and collected Jared knew she was nervous. Lexi didn’t have to say a thing to him, he knew, and she was.
In the hotel lobby they walked to the front desk and Jared gave his name and got the room key. They gave a pause when the door opened and they saw but one king bed. “I swear I book a double room.” Jared held his hands up. “I’ll go down and fix this.” He turned to leave.
“It’s okay!” Lexi grabbed his arm. “Not like we haven’t shared a bed before.” She walked in dropping her bags on the floor then turned letting herself fall to the bed.
“Are you sure?” Jared shut the door behind himself.
“Yeah.” Lexi reached grabbing the room service menu. “I’m starving.” After eating, showering, Jared called the kids and Lexi called Jensen. Finally relaxing for the evening Lexi looked over at Jared sitting against the headboard with his laptop on his lap. “Tell the truth.”
“What?” He looked at Lexi who was lying opposite with her feet on the pillows.
“You didn’t really book a double room.” A smile spread over his face. “I knew it!”
“I did!” He countered. “At first.” He sat up and put his laptop aside. “I originally booked a double king suite. You were sitting right next to me when I did. But I got a call the next day about the room being double booked and I told them a single king suite would be great as well.”
Lexi sat up and laughed at Jared. “If you wanted to sleep in the same bed and spoon you could've just asked.” She gave his shoulder a playful push.
Jared leaned forward sliding an arm around her waist. “Fine. I want to hold you tonight. I miss having you in my arms at night.”
Lexi leaned forward and kissed the tip of his nose. “Sounds good to me.”
After pulling the sheets down and settling into bed Jared shut the lights out and wrapped his arms around Lexi pulling her back flush against his chest. He let out a deep exhale and Lexi felt his body mold into hers his breath on her neck near her ear. The feeling was familiar and comfortable. Lexi had forgotten how safe and secure she felt in Jared’s arms. Lexi turned into Jared, her arms finding their way around his waist. She tucked her head under his chin and Jared smiled when he felt her nose nuzzle the dip between his neck and chest. He felt her hands travel gently up his back squeezing gently.
“I miss this, too.” Lexi whispered.
~
It was mid afternoon and Lexi was at a location set for a photoshoot. Her hair was freshly dyed a dark red color similar to a red wine and cut a little shorter than mid back. Her make up was done dark but lightly and she donned a dark jeans, a black tank top and black leather jacket with black biker boots.
Jared smiled as he watched her go back and forth from the photographer to the laptop going over shots and talking to the other models. She was in her element with her tablet in hand guiding everyone in the direction she needed them. His heart was so full of pride in that moment. She’d overcome so much and here she was kicking ass at her life and taking it back.
“Hey!” Lexi said excited when she saw Jared standing near the door. “WHat are you doing here?” She through her arms around him giving him a tight squeeze before stepping back.
“Decided to come get a peek and what you have going on.” He lifted a hand and ran his fingers through her hair. “Nice change.”
“Ellie talked me into it.”
“Looks good on you.”
Lexi blushed at his complement. Even after all this time Jared still managed to make her blush with his words. “Come on.” She took his hand and pulled him toward everyone . “Hey guys, this is Jared.” Lexi introduced. “We had a little technical difficulties with some things earlier so we are running behind.”
“That’s cool. I’ll just sit back and admire the awesomeness of you doing your thing.” Jared sat back in one of the many chairs.
“Lex,” A young lady called from near the camera area. “Just got off the phone with the agency and the replacement will take a few hours.”
“Great!” Lexi placed her head in her hands.
“What’s wrong?” Jared asked.
“The male model flaked and the replacement, well, needs to be replaced.” Lexi lifted her head and looked at Jared. “Or not.” A smirk appeared on her face.
“No.” Jared held up a finger. “I don’t do photoshoots unless I have to.”
“Come on! It’s just with me and by yourself!” She told him with a pleading expression.
“Lex,” The young woman called out again. “They said they can have someone here in an hour and a half.”
Jared stood from his seat. “Tell them you don;t need another model.” He droned, Lexi jumping giving him another hug.
“Thank you so much! You are a lifesaver!!”
“You’re lucky I love you.” He said lowly to Lexi placing a kiss on her forehead. “What am I wearing?”
Lexi pointed him to the Change rooms. Jared walked out of the changing room in a dark blue pair of jeans and a white button down. After he had his hair styled in a part and light make up done he was set.
“Do I meet the boss’s standards?” Jared asked walking onto set.
“Absolutely!” Lexi gave him a smile. “But first.” She walked over and unbuttoned his shirt halfway down. “Perfect.” Her eyes flickered up to his. “You know I like your chest.” She said softly to him.
Jard felt the slight heat rush to his cheeks. “Yes, Ma’am.” He let his Texas drawl slid out a bit.
The rest of the shoot went by without a hitch. Jared did his set and then Lexi came in to pose for their set together. Everyone kept commenting on how natural they looked together, how much chemistry they had between them. How easily they fell into a rhythm together. They fed off of one another’s personalities and it was infectious.
After wrapping the two decided to celebrate Lexi’s week of accomplishments by hitting the club scene for a night out on the town, something Lexi never really done. They met up with Ellie and several other people, popped open several bottles of champagne and danced until their feet ached. At almost one am, Jared and Lexi poured themselves into their hotel room giggling.
“I haven’t had a night like that in a long time.” Jared said kicking his shoes off.
“I had a little too much champagne and I think I’m on my way to drunk.” Lexi said hunched over trying to unbuckled her strapped heels.
“I hate to tell you, Baby Girl” Jared walked over placing a hand on her waist to help keep her balanced as he reached down with his other hand to unbuckle her shoes. “I think you’re already there.”
“Like you’re any better.” She chidded slipping her other shoe off with his help.
“I’m not totally drunk.” He smiled down at her. “Just enough to be very blunt and honest.”
Lexi looked up to him and his eyes were dark and lustfull. “About?” She asked swallowing hard.
Jared stepped closer pressing his body to hers, holding her steady with a hand around her waist, His mouth near the shell of her ear. “About how badly I want to push down on the bed,” Jared brought his opposite hand to the hm of her dress and slowly caressed up her leg. “And fuck you senseless.” He pressed several kisses down her jaw before stopping at her lips. “Then I wanna make love to you nice and slow, till you’re a shaking mess beneath me.” He took her lips into a passion filled kiss before pulling away to let her breath. He looked down at her seeing the same hunger in her eyes as he felt. “Would you let me?”
“Yes.”
Jared groped her ass in his hands and lifted her off the ground. Lexi wrapped her legs around his waist till she fell onto the king beda gasp falling from her. Jared stood at the foot of the bed looking down at her as he unbuttoned his dark grey shirt. He reached a hand grabbing Lexi’s ankle and pulled her to the edge of the bed, the movements causing her dress to ride up her hips. Sliding giants hands up her legs her pulled her painties down, tossing them behind him. He crawled on top of her reaching between their bodies to free himself from the restrictions of his pants.
Lexi moaned feeling Jared sliding inside of her, stretching her channel open again. SHe planted her feet flat on the bed, bracing herself for the burn of his girth to ease up a little. It had been so long since they’d been like this, Lexi’s body wasn’t used to his size anymore.
“Do you need a minute?” Jared asked feeling her walls clenched around him.
“No. Keep going.” Her voice was breathy as she pulled his body back onto her.
He pulled out and slid back in slowly the first few times to give her a small amount of time to adjust. Soon he was pounding into her so hard her body was jerking with each thrust. Leaning back on his heels he grabbed her behind the knees pushing her legs up and apart, giving him the most amazing view of himself inside of her. It also gave him a new angle inside of her, the head of his cock slamming into her sweet spot repeatedly had her arching her back grabbing at the bed sheets with white knuckles as she came apart. When Jared felt her spasming around him he looked down to see her juiced slicking up his cock as she came with a cry. Jared fell forward feeling his orgasm hit him. He grabbed the bed sheets and squeezed as his hips snapped forward in uneven spurts of force till he came with a loud moan.
Jared fell next to her on the bed both panting with a sheen of sweat on their skin. He turned his head to her seeing her smile.
“I miss that.” He chuckled.
“Me too.” Lexi turned her head looking at him. “Though I may be sore in the morning.” She gave a laugh.
Jared turned over getting on top of her. “It was worth it, though.” He kissed her lips.
“God, yes.” Lexi push his shirt sleeves passed his arms letting the sweat dampened fabric fall wherever.
“You sure you don’t need a minute?” Jared asked hovering over her.
“I’m good.” Lexi breathed out with a smile before finding Jared’s lips again.
Jared slid a hand beneath her finding the zipper of her sun dress and pulling it down wasting no time pulling the dress from her body. Lexi worked on riding him of his jeans, her hands feeling as much of his bare body as she could.
Skin pressed against skin, hands feeling, groping, touching wherever they could. Jared lifted one of her legs over his hip, the head of his cock barely touching her core. He adjusts himself again and she felt the tip protruding at her entrance. Lexi whimpered raising her hips. She wanted more of him. She craved it. She craved him. It was like she was getting the one thing she has denied herself and it was delicious.
Jared worked his way inside of her slowly. Inching into her passage, stretching her again at a pace that was driving her insane. God, he imagined being back inside of her for months. He missed her touch, her taste, the sound of her breath hitching in her chest as he filled her completely, bottoming out in one smooth thrust of his hips.
They turned, Lexi straddling him. SHe looked down at Jared, eyes shut, mouth open in ecstasy while she moved her hips in the exact was he loved the most. Jared’s hands slid up her thighs, gripping her hips as he inched them higher up her body. Lexi leaned forward sliding a hand behind his neck pulling him up into a sitting position. Jared looked up at Lexi as she smiled down at him.
“I wanna see those eyes.” She whispered to Jared both her hands on his face. “Those gorgeous eyes.” Lexi kissed him hard her fingers wrapping into his hair. “I missed you so fucking much.” She let her head fall to his shoulder, giving a little nibble to his shoulder then spreading kisses over his neck, shoulders and chest, anywhere she can press her lips on his body.
They were lost in one another.

Bracelet Bells & Teddy Bears
BTS
Jeon Jungkook/Reader [F]
Genre: Paranormal, Thriller, Ghost Hunter AU
Words: 10.9k
Jungkook- a stupid, self-proclaimed ghost hunter in college- decided to take his best friend with him to investigate a 2-story old house that has been on the market for ages. The reason he was interested in it? Well, it hadn’t been rented or bought ever since he was a child. The ‘It’s not haunted!’ attached above the ‘For Sale/Rent’ didn’t help.
-----------
“This is literally the stupidest fuckin’ idea you’ve ever pitched to me before. I honestly don’t know why I’m standing next to you right now. I actually hate you,” Taehyung grumbled as he stood next to his excited best friend of 6 years. He held a camera around his neck with a bag on his back filled with different lenses to attach on.
“The only thing you hate is the fear of pissing your pants when we get in there and see some ghosts!” The best friend- Jungkook- in question, quipped back. Having a pocket full of batteries and a ready to go ‘state of the art’ camcorder in his hand he was practically giddy. Black pants, white tee and a jean jacket over his shoulder with a black cap on his head to cover his messy black hair. Taehyung, on the other hand, was a bit more creative in clothing with his blue skinnies and checkered button down, a black bandana strapped around his forehead.
“I’m gonna kill you and throw your stupid body in that house so you haunt it for the rest of existence.” Taehyung seethed. He wasn’t scared per se, he's used to Jungkook’s ‘ghost hunting’ by now. It’s just that he had a recital coming up soon and he wanted to be home right now practicing for it. Not breaking and entering into a property that is no doubt private by now.
Jungkook new this, but tonight was the perfect night for a good ole ghost hunting! The moon was high, shining brightly with the light of the full moon and not a cloud was in the sky. The stars speckled the sky and the soft spring breeze was calming and warm. It wasn’t cold, nor rainy and the full moon so clear had to be a sign! It was now, or never. Of course, if he explained why it had to be today to Taehyung, he’d ultimately leave him behind to hunt on his own. Every famous ghost hunter needed an assistant; even if Taehyung denies that he is.
“We go in, walk around a little bit and batta-bing batta-boom, we’re out. If we don’t see a ghost in the first 2 hours, then I promise we’ll call it quits and we can go for a late night burger run.”
“And I expect you to be paying for this burger run?”
“Well, that’s up for debate.” Taehyung rolled his eyes as he hiked his bag up his shoulders more and clicked off the camera’s lens cover for it to dangle. Seeing his fall into submission of Jungkook’s scheme, he cheered and fired up his camcorder. “Alright! Exploration and investigation of 12th Avenue’s mystery house is officially underway. Let’s get it!” He charged off the sidewalk and weeded through the knee-high tanned grass- if you can call it that- all the way up to the porch. Taehyung followed, taking the walkway up to the door, however, and watched as Jungkook turned and swiveled in every which way to capture anything he could on his cam.
Taehyung sighed as he watched his friend even film underneath the old, broken table that sat on the very unstable, rotten wood. “I’m leaving your sorry ass behind I swear to god,” he muttered as he looked at the front door. Or the poor excuse for one. The hinges were all busted, the door handle rusted and the front oval shaped glass broken. The wind whistled in through the broken glass. There was no way the door wasn’t going to fall off if he touched it.
Jungkook stood next to Taehyung and cupped his chin. “Maybe we can just pluck it off the frame and move it? If we make too much noise, the ghosts may hide.”
“You made enough sound going through the treacherous jungle that is the lawn. I’m pretty certain the ghosts- if there are any- are already well aware some fuckboy is trying to get in.” Jungkook walked forward and hooked his camcorder to his belt as he gripped over sides of the broke door and jerked. Once, twice and the third time he nearly stumbled backward. The door flew off the hinges ti was barely attached to and Jungkook blinked.
“Yo, we wanted to take the door off, not destroy the damn frame.” Jungkook moved the door to the side as Taehyung examined the wooden, splintered frame. “That was some force you had, Jesus.”
“It.. no. It felt like someone kicked the door at me.” Taehyung ticked a brow up at his friend as he rolled his eyes. Already not believing him. “I’m serious! It felt like someone pushed the door off for me!” Taehyung just waved him off as he stepped inside. Jungkook huffed as he followed him in. “Damn,” Jungkook looked around, “this place is a wreck.”
“No kidding. It’s been vacant for a while and no one bothers with upkeep around here.” Taehyung answered back as he snapped pictures here and there. The flash of his camera igniting the dark room for milliseconds, leaving only outlines of objects behind. “No doubt the power’s been cut.” Jungkook unhooked his cam from his belt and switched the camera mood to ‘night vision’ and trotted to Taehyung’s bag on his back.
He pulled out two small flashlights. There were small and like 4$ at the local drug store, but damn they were bright and the batteries lasted- what Jungkook swore- eons. Not to mention it was a sweet deal when they came in packs of 2. Just what he needed for only 4$.
He flicked them both on, already stocking it with prime AA+ batteries, and tossing one to Taehyung, keeping the other for himself. Of course, out of the two colors, he tossed the pink one and kept the blue. Taehyung only rolled his eyes as he separated from his friend to waltz into the living room.
“Hey! Rule #1 in hunting in old, creepy houses is not separating!” Jungkook scolded. Taehyung only flipped him a slender, middle finger as he rounded the doorway into the dusty room. Jungkook swung himself around. “Fine, get molested by a ghost. I don’t care.” He walked into the kitchen.
The island in the middle of the open room was dusty and a glass vase filled with cooking utensils caught his eye. Why would they be here? Did the last family who lived here- whenever that was- leave them? He shrugged as he filmed the room thoroughly, capturing anything.
Cobwebs hung and swung in the slight draft in the air from the ceilings, connecting to walls. The tiles of the floor were cracks or just flat out broken as Jungkook crunched them under his feet or kicked them with his heels. The counters were a mess, dusty, grimy and coated in a thick layer of dirt. The windows were cracked and covered in a hefty layer of dust. Opening the fridge, he cringed as he saw a dead rat in the lower rack of the fridge door.
Shutting it back, he looked up at the ceiling. Damaged and moldy. “Gross,” he muttered as he filmed. Working his way back out into the main room, he followed Taehyung into the living room, seeing his friend capture photos and looked around furniture.
The house was still almost completely furnished. A love seat and 4 person couch sat adjacent to one another with an old-style box TV the size of a bathroom window sat on an old, open shelved audio tower. The shelves were lined with dusty DVD and VHS players with a small collection of about 20 movies below on the bottom shelf. Jungkook zoomed on the old piece of technology.
“Woah, dude. This is older than I thought. Just how long has this place been vacant?”
“Don’t act like you didn’t watch back to back Sailor Moon on VHS when you were 5. It’s not that ancient.” Jungkook gasped.
“Don’t insult me. Everyone knows Sailor Moon was the best anime of its era.” Taehyung opened up an old china cabinet, still filled with expensive china.
“Yeah, yeah. Whatever weeb.” The two continued to investigate and look around. Directly behind the living room, the dining room sat. The table oval and fit for a large family with 6 chairs surrounding it. A vacant fishbowl was filled with far-stale water with stupid rocks in the bottom and things floating in the water that Jungkook would rather not guess the name of.
The house creaked with each step of the grown men, being an almost all wood floor home. Rugs placed here and there, basically attached to the floor by grime and some mystery fluids here and there. Honestly, if some homeless beggar, squatting in the corner popped out at any moment, he wouldn’t be surprised.
Having gone through the downstairs enough, they set their sights on the staircase leading up. By now, even Taehyung was thoroughly invested in the exploration of the house. Not that he wasn’t before, Taehyug literally wrote a report in high school about this house and the weird vague origins around it. He was hardly able to dig up any information on it, even when he called up the retailers, they just hung up on him and never picked up again. Jungkook nudged his arm with a broad, shit eating grin on his face.
“You’re having fun. Admit it. I’m a genius.” Taehyung shoved his shoulder as he started up, testing the wood of the stairs, making sure he wouldn’t fall through with each step. “Hey! It’s the team leader’s job to go first!”
“How humble,” Taehyung monotonously replied as he headed up. The wooden stairs were in the middle of the main entrance by the front door. Kitchen to the right, living room and dining room to the left. The stairs themselves weren’t looking so hot. A torn and tattered rug lining each step upwards posed a threat of someone tripping and subsequently dying, but thank god for rotted, old railings, right?
After a careful hike up, the two looked around the upstairs landing. In front of them was a large, bay window. The portion of the window poking out for aesthetically pleasing selfies or calm poetry sessions were covered with a sense of dread. A lone, torn and stained teddy bear lay face down on the bay.
Jungkook walked over to the window and knelt, getting a close up on the bear. “If ever I’ve seen a cursed object,” he muttered as he moved to get another angle of it. Taehyung walked up behind him, snapping a picture of the window letting in the moonlight as it illuminated the landing on the ground. Taehyung gently picked up the teddy bear as Jungkook rolled his eyes. “I just said it was probably cursed, and what do you do? Pick it up.” Taehyung gave yet another famous eye roll.
“Shut up. It’s a bear with a hole in the side of it. If it’s cursed, then surely its eyes would glow red and it'd bite my hand off or something.”
“That’s a horrible picture, thank you,” Jungkook shook his head as he stood. Taehyung was gentle in setting the bear back down, only now sitting it up and against the wall comfortably. The bear will surely remember his kindness.
Jungkook moved around and went to the left side of the stair landing while Tae took the right side. Down Jungkook’s end was one door and the other side was 2. Of course, the unspoken agreement was to open and explore. Taehyung went into the first of the two room and scoffed. Typical.
There was a bunk bed against the east wall. The bottom bunk had a hole in the mattress as springs pierced through clumps of polyester covered in grime. The floor was covered in toys that had paint chipped away or were broken and well worn in time. Climbing a step up the ladder in the bed, the top bunk seemed oddly in place A blanket thrown over the mattress and a pillow, albeit devoid of a pillowcase, wasn’t torn at all. All with a stuffed elephant standing against the pillow. He snapped a shot and descended to look in the closet across the room.
The closet door was stuck. Even with digging his heels in the floor and jerking, the door just wouldn’t budge. So, with a huff and a little fixing of his shirt he had bunched up, he turned and abandoned that hope. Not realizing the reason he couldn’t open it was the hand holding the doorknob from the other side.
The other room was nearly identical save for the lack of a bunk bed and only a king. Fit for parents. The room was lined with shelves with empty or broken frames. The frames that held pictures of people, the faces were all scratched out or cut out completely. He’d be lying if Taehyung said it didn’t give him the chills. This room had the door of the closet completely off, only there was absolutely nothing inside. Not even a mouse trap.
On Jungkook’s neck of the woods, the room he entered was the bathroom. It was pretty old styled. The toilet sat against the back wall with a shelf above it where one would place towels. Next to the throne was a broken toilet paper holder. Further along, the main wall was the sink with a mirror opening to reveal a medicine cabinet inside it. When he opened it, old prescription bottles rolled out, crashing into the sink’s bowl and scaring the poor boy. He shut it back as he took the bottle that fell and read the label the best he could.
“Chlorpromazine,” he read, reading each syllable out he could. Not knowing exactly what it treated and the label being far too damaged to read, he simply placed it on the side of the sink and turned to investigate further. “What the fu-” he trailed off when he looked at the bathtub. The tub filled to the brim with water, clear and freezing. The shower curtain lay on the floor under his boots as the shower head dripped with a never-ending water splash into the tub. “Oookay, right. Moving on.” He spun, not able to capture the small ripple rip through the water’s surface.
He caught Taehyung coming out of the second room as he waved to him and leaned against the wall.
“Find anything?”
“Maybe. Just the kids and parents room, a lot of dusty shit but there were a few creepy things, not gonna lie.” Jungkook’s face broke into a smile.
“Lemme see!” He pushed off the wall, ready to rush to his friend to go through the sweet picture he got, but he hardly got two steps in. The floor gave way under a particularly hard step and buckled under the young man’s weight.
“Jungkook!” Taehyung screamed as he watched his best friend fall through the floor. Rushing down the stairs, nearly falling on that damned rug, he stopped at the bottom and looked around and up at the hole above him. Yet, at his feet, didn’t lay Jungkook groaning in pain. He wasn’t in the kitchen, the living room, the dining area, the landing, the front yard, he just wasn’t there. Not even hanging pathetically from the hole he fell through. He just… disappeared?
XXX
Jungkook groaned as he rolled from his side and onto his back. He coughed as a shiver ran up his spine. Cracking open his eyes, he expected to see Taehyung peering up at him with a hole in the floor where he very clearly remembers falling through. But, to his shock, he stared at a perfectly whole, wooden ceiling.
“He probably just moved me,” Jungkook reasoned as he pushed his sore body up and grabbed the back of his head. A nice lump on the head and a killer headache are exactly what he didn’t need. Beside him, his camcorder lay completely busted. He gasped as he grabbed it. “Aw, man it’s completely fucked.” He sighed as he popped open the battery compartment and ejected the SD memory card and carefully pocketed it. Whatever was recorded on this puppy was all he would have, unfortunately.
Leaving the broken piece of metal, he forced himself up and thank god for dollar store flashlights. Seeing the light of the torch he hobbled over to it and picked it up. Bending at his hip to pick it up and then straighten back out his light shone into the face of a someone.
“AHh!” He screamed as the person he was pretty sure he just blinded screamed back at his own scream. Jungkook, ever the baby, fell back onto his ass as he whipped his light back up to see who he just shone his light onto. But, no one was there. He took the broken cam and tossed it into the darkness of nowhere, only to wait. There was nothing.
Next thing he knew, the cam was flying back at him, skimming past his shoulder as he quickly leaned out of the way.
“Hey!” He scolded into nowhere. “Don’t throw my shit!” Suddenly, a person’s face hung upside down and annoyed in front of his face.
“You threw it at me first!” He screamed again as the person, floated above him? Their- her- feet off the ground and body languid and iridescent? “I swear, men are the most pathetic thing.” She floated around, just relaxing in the air as her body was transparent and she wore older clothes. She looked no older than 19, and her capris and loose, untucked stripped teeshirt were at least early 2000s fashion.
“What the- I mean- you’re a-” An actual ghost was floating right in front of his eyes and his damn video camera was conveniently broken. God, what awful timing. He jumped when he heard the squeaking of the floors above him. Where was he, or rather where was Taehyung?! He was missing all the action! The ghost girl gasped as she grabbed something and threw it at Jungkook, grabbing his wrist as his body disappears.
“Shh,” the ghost hushed as he clutched a cube of scented wax in his hand, the thing the ghost threw at him and listened. The squeaking moved and soon was down the hall, and before he knew it he saw something pass through the floors above and come down. It was just across the room from him. It, he didn’t know what it was. It was tall, completely shadowed, it twitched, red hazy red like unfocused cat lasers. It was unbelievably tall, hunched as it’s pointed shoulders and chin seemed like it could impale steel. Soon, the figure who had sniffed around searching for anything-anyone that could be around- phased away. Where to, Jungkook really didn’t want to find out.
The ghost girl let go of him, as Jungkook became visible once again. A cold sweat gathered at his nape and traveled down his spine.
“What in the hell was that thing?” He fearfully whispered. Just looking at it instilled him with pure terror. He’d never experienced freezing fear before, now he has. He moved to look at the ghost who had moved to kneel on both her knees in front of him, sitting politely as she signaled for him to look at the cube of wax in his hand.
“That should keep you safe. It’ll make sure he doesn’t smell you. His eyesight isn’t good. If you don’t move and don’t make a sound with that cube, you’ll be safe.” The ghost explained, but that didn’t explain hardly anything at all.
“Who are you?” Was the only thing he found himself asking.
“My name is Y/n. I lived here a long time ago. My little brother, father and mother lived here with me.” You leaned closer to Jungkook and inspected him. His style, his face, his hair, his clothes, his shoes, everything. “What year is it outside? Time is kinda jumbled in here.” He opened his mouth.
“Uh, 2019 just started.” You gasped.
“It’s been that long!” You hushed yourself immediately and looked around, making sure no one, or rather, nothing heard you. “I’ve been dead for that long?” You lowered your voice significantly, almost in disbelief.
“So, you know you’re dead?”
“Well, of course. How else could I logically explain glowing, floating in the air and just conveniently turning invisible.”
“You were also able to touch me. How’s that work?”
“It took me a while to get that down, but with enough focused energy, I can become tangible. It’s pretty hard to do though.” He shook his head as he blinked and put his hands in front of him.
“Wait, wait, hold the fuckin’ phone. This is all way too much to process.” He took a moment, pinching the bridge of his phone, eyes skewed shut. “Right, so you’re an old, but young, dead girl. There’s some sort of demon? Roaming around? And I fell through the floor into a whole other room.” He opened his mouth, trying to make sense of it, yet it still left him utterly confused. Then his mind jumped back to Taehyung. “Oh god, Taehyung.”
“You’re friend?” You had seen him? He nodded.
“Yes! Oh my god, is he going to be okay?!” You nodded. “You’re way too calm about this. That thing is somewhere and my best friend also happens to be somewhere and I have no idea what to do about it. I don’t even know where the hell I am!”
“Calm down. My brother’s animals will see to it he is kept safe. He was very kind after all.” He blinked, falling further and further into confusion.
“Animals? What, so there are ghost animals too?”
“Not exactly. My little brother was forced to leave all his possessions behind when Mother left with him. He cared so much for his little stuff animals, they now possess souls. Your friend was very kind, so they will keep him safe.”
“Kind? When was he-” Jungkook remembered him picking up and replacing the teddybear ever so carefully. “The bear,” he said in realization. You nodded as the bear in question waved to you from the far end of the room behind Jungkook, before phasing out. “That small thing is gonna keep him safe?” You stood up, hopping up to have your toes brush the ground as you lazily floated.
“There are others. My brother had many toys. His favorite animal was an elephant,” you chuckled as you remembered him running around his room, elephant toy in hand making the most obnoxious sounds.
“An elephant ghost?!” You swore you saw the human’s eyes light up, just like your brother’s. He must be rather immature himself yet.
“Come on, I’ll get you back to your friend. You two should get out of her as soon as possible.” Jungkook sprung up, chasing after your elegant, flowing body. Your hair wisped behind you, like spider webs. If you stood on the ground in front of him, he’d be quite a bit taller than you. Actually, even for a ghost, you were rather pretty.
He followed you to a small ramp to a trapdoor above the two of you. He watched as you phased through the door above and he heard a click of what he assumed to be a lock and small bang on the door. He crawled up the ramp and pushed the door open. It squeaked with rusty hinges as he pushed it and it fell open. Peaking out, his hair whipped around, the cap he had lost previous somewhere no long restraining it in place. He was outside? Be looked around.
“The cellar?”
“That’s right. This house had an extensive cellar that runs underneath a good portion of the house. Now hurry, we need to find your friend.” He stopped you.
“I- I haven’t told you my name yet.”
“Why would I need to know it?”
“I know yours,” that was a fair point. You turned to him and sat with your knees to your chest as you got eye level with him. Waiting patiently for his name he was so eager to give. “My name’s Jungkook.”
XXX
He kept following your back, like a lost puppy. He felt oddly too trusting, but you didn’t seem like you’d walk him into a dangerous situation. I mean, you gave him a way to hide and stay safe and reassured him his best friend would be alright. He was worried about Taehyung, he was worried about when he’d get to go home, how long he’s been here and just exactly who were you?
You said you’d use to live here, with your family in this house. And your reaction when he told you the year out, you were shocked, too shocked for your death to be anytime in the last decade. That’s to be expected though, this house hadn’t been lived in for as along as Jungkook could remember.
He had a bazillion questions in his head, but his main priority was to find Taehyung. He needed to located and secure his best friend’s safety first, then maybe he could ask you a few questions.
You had led him around the house and back to the front door. The door had been replaced on its hinges and even locked shut.
“What the..” he looked at the door. It was like he never ripped it off in the first place, in fact, it looked better than it did before! “I- does that stupid shadow thing fix doors?” You shook your head.
“No. That was probably a different spirit here. There’s some here who don’t like it when stupid kids destroy their property.”
“You mean there are others here?”
“Of course. You’ve run into 3 already. Even your friend didn’t realize he was right in front of one before. Of course, Vivi doesn’t like it when people try to go into the closest without knocking first. It’s just bad manners.” Your hand phased through the doorknob, twisting the lock and opening the door perfectly. Opening like a door should. “We here aren’t allowed to leave until we’re found.”
“What- found?” You nodded as you both reentered the house. It was just as before, the hole Jungkook fell through still there. “Oh sure, fix the door but not the floor that’s convenient.” He spits in spite. You focused enough to whack him on the head as he cursed your stupid ability to become tangible in the first place.
His whining was cut off by a scream up above. It was Taehyung. You were off, floating in speed up the stairs in which Jungkook followed. Checking each room upstairs, not to fall through again, he didn’t see his friend. He very clearly heard him up here though! You stood in front of the bay window, Jungkook joining your side.
“The- that damn bear is gone!” You nodded.
“He probably has your friend.”
“Well, how do I get him back!” You looked up at the ceiling. “What? Is there something important about the ceiling?” You rolled your eyes as you floated up and soon revealed a hidden attic door. Dangling the custy pull, he rushed open and gripped it. Yanking it, he squawked and backed up as quick as possible before the stairs relentlessly fell onto the floor. It was like some cheap ass booby-trap. You flew up into the opening as he carefully climbed the how-ever-old ladder.
His head popped up the opening and he gasped as he saw his friend backed in a corner, that small teddy bear in front of him while that same shadow man-thing stood around. Taehyung had his palms clamped over his mouth as his nose exhaled harshly, making the tall shadow try and pinpoint his location. The bear hovered around Taehyung’s head, dinging like a soft bell. With each ring, the shadow twitched until it screech. It was a god awful sound.
Jungkook almost let go of the ladder to cover his ears, but you stopped him as you covered them for him. Your hands that you made physical were soft over his own, and it as like he was listening to the ocean waves. He didn’t realize that ghosts had such a pleasant internal sound.
The shadow screeched and seethed as it slashed through boxes, torn fabrics, threw anything it could touch in madness. It was horrific. What if what he was doing was done to a person? They would be mutilated, ripped, torn no doubt killed. The thought chilled Jungkook as you felt the change in his atmosphere. You hung upside down in front of his face and stopped his eyes from reaching that horrid, shadow.
“Don’t look,” you mouthed but didn’t speak. Soon, the shadow seemed to have enough and Jungkook once again saw it fade into nothing, leaving nothing but cold behind. You removed your hands and spoke. “You’re friend,” Jungkook was quick to get the rest of the way into the attic and rush to Taehyung’s side.
His hands had dropped to his stomach, holding it like he was going to retch. The teddy sat at Tae’s side, swaying in the air like it had marionette strings attached to it. His eyes were wide and he was shocked to see his camera in one piece around his neck yet.
“Tae! Tae! Hey, snap out of it!” You floated down to your knees as you knelt beside the frozen young man. He looked to you. “Can you help him?”
“I’m going to try.” You looked at the small teddy and asked him for something. The teddy rung again, a pleasant sound and a small cube sat in your palm. It was just like his scented one, so the bear is responsible for creating those? You held it up under his nose and soon he began to cough. You smiled as Taehyung seemed to come around as he gasped and held at his shirt. Jungkook smiled as he pat his friend on the back, trying to soothe him.
“Thank you,” Jungkook whispered to you.
“What the fuck was that?” Taehyung practically whimpered. Jungkook looked at you.
“That’s what I’d like to know. I have more than a few questions for you.” You nodded as you sat and crossed your legs. After Taehyung gathered himself, Jungkook caught him up on the situation to the best of his ability. Though, after that, the questions just kept growing.
“Alright,” you sat, ready for a questionnaire. “What do you want to know.”
“Everything,” Jungkook answered. “What the hell is going on? Why are you here, how did you die, when and-”
“What the ever loving fuck was Mr. Shadow-beast?” Taehyung injected in the final question. You sighed. It wasn’t a hobby of yourself to revisit your death, much less the last leg of your life, but if it will stop their questions and make sure they don’t come back like horror-driven kids tend to do, you’d tell it. The full story. Your story.
“I lived here with my family. We moved in the early 1990s. I was only a teenager at the time, and after 4 years of living here, my mother had my little brother. A family of 4, and we were happy. For a time, but then my dad started to get sick. He was ill, not right in the head. Nothing we did would pacify him. He’d get angry over any little thing, he’d push us around and scream and terrify my little brother. Soon, mother wanted out, so she ran out, taken my brother with her and leaving me behind. I was 19, so I could leave whenever I wanted, but…” you stopped as you looked around at the mess.
The mess that shadow man-made.
“Father, he became too ill. He stopped me from going anywhere. He locked me away in a secret room, told me ‘they’ told him to. He’d keep me there and I was never allowed to leave. Soon, I just lost track of time and one night when I fell asleep, I woke up-” you gestured to yourself “-like this.”
“You’re dad... he killed you?” Taehyung asked delicately.
“In a sense.”
“That isn’t ‘in a sense’, Y/n! He killed you. He forced you into a cage and killed you!” Jungkook scolded. “Is that why you can’t leave? You’re angry at your father?” You shook your head.
“No, that’s not it. Dad, he hid me. I can’t leave before he’s hidden me and he won’t let me leave. You saw earlier what happens when I try.” You looked once more at the wreckage.
“No way, that thing is your dad?!” You sighed.
“I don’t know what happened to him, but I don’t really care either. I’m sure he’s in a lot of pain, but what he’s put everyone threw, he deserves all the pain he’s receiving. Even after death, he won’t stop.” You looked at the two boys. “But, he’s confined here. He can’t leave this house, this property. He’s stuck here too.”
“When you say he hid you, do you mean your body?” You nodded. “So, what you said earlier, about being found. You want someone to find your body so you can finally go?” You nodded again. Jungkook shook his head in confusion though. “But, we were in the house, Y/n. Where could he possibly hide you in a house you know so well?”
“I don’t know, Jungkook. If I just managed to get close to my body- wherever it may be- I’m sure I could sense it somehow. Even a ghost has limits, and finding their own body is a major one. Why else do you think it takes exorcisms or man-lead discoveries for spirits to move one. We can’t do it alone.” The teddy that sat beside Taehyung rung once, twice and moved to fly and circle your head. It was almost trying to cheer you up. You smiled after giving the small teddy a poke as it floated back to Taehyung. You giggled. “I think he likes you.” Taehyung rolled his eyes.
“Y/n, what if we found your body?” Jungkook proposed. Taehyung looked at him shocked.
“Woah, what? Did you hear her, she doesn’t know where it is?”
“I know, but I don’t feel comfortable keeping her here with him. She’s helped us and with these,” he showed his wax cube, “he can’t see us. I swear, if we do this, I won’t mess with ghosts ever again.” Taehyung squinted at him, obviously skeptical. “I’ll pinkie promise.” Taehyung gasped.
“Oh my god, you’re serious.” Taehyung thought it over. “Well, I suppose we can’t have a full-on horror movie themed adventure without concluding the obvious plot slapping us in the face, now can we. I’m in, but you’re so giving up your title after this.” The two clasped pinkies- like real men would- and you interjected.
“But you can't! You need to go!”
“Sorry girlie, we’ve already done promised on it. Do you know the punishment for breaking a pinkie promise? It’s not fun man,” Taehyung said. You just huffed as you cradled your forehead, making the boys chuckle in the small moment of amusement.
“Boys.”

Jungkook lead Taehyung around to the still open door to the cellar. Crouching and shuffling down the ramp the 2 of them practically sashayed inside. You floated behind them, silent the whole time. Now, they were here, but where to look? Jungkook rubbed the back of his neck.
“Just, start looking around I guess?” Taehyung just shrugged as he turned and began doing just that. That same teddy floating ever near at his back. You stayed near Jungkook as he looked around. Behind boxes, barrels, under tables, he even pulled objects from shelves expecting a secret room to pop out from the wall. But, nothing. You sat on a box, a hopeless look on your face. You never expected to see yourself again and refuse to get your feeble hopes up.
“Y/n, don’t worry. We’ll find it- er you.” You shook your head.
“You shouldn’t have bothered,” Jungkook wished you were something, someone he could touch. He’d hold you, tell you it’d all be okay. But, how do you comfort someone who has already died while you search their old house for their body? With their demonic father stalking around no less.
Speak of the Devil.
Taehyung froze as he sunk back into the shadows, teddy at his chest to ‘protect’ him. You gasped as the shadow, your father, just barely caught sight of you. The shadow moved fast- too fast. The walls behind you morphed, sucking in the shadows as they peeled off the wall like twisted arms. THey grabbed your body, sucking you partially into the wall to keep you imprisoned. You struggled as your father approached, danger in every footstep.
Just as he always did when he saw you. He’d suck the energy out of you, growing darker- stronger- with each time you allowed yourself to be so foolish you were seen. Just as he did when you were alive. He’s taking everything away from you, even in death.
The wall would sink you further and further in, sucking you through space. Taehyung watched as Jungkook quickly started moving, knocking over anything he could in his wake. “Idiot!” Taehyung screamed at him before he realized that they were both now side by side, and easily located by the demon that once was your father. The Shadow turned towards the sound, making out the faint, blue, breathing outlines of the two men and the small pesky bear that floated at their side.
The scream the shadow emitted was very different this time. Directed directly at the boys, they covered their ears and you struggled against the shadows that forced themselves down your throat as you choked and gagged and wanted so badly to scream. Jungkook swore he almost saw what you would look like if your body wasn’t see through- if you weren’t dead. He thought he caught a glimpse of what or who you would be if you were still alive.
All before he was thrust away, and found himself and Taehyung none to gently thrown back into the front lawn. They don’t know exactly how they got back out there from the back of the house from the cellar, but nonetheless, there they lay in the tall unkempt grass. The bear sat on Taehyung’s leg, latched to his thigh with those stuffed arms of it’s. The two sat up with a collective groan and endless whining as they rubbed their shoulders, back, arms, head, anything that hit the ground with at least minimum force.
“What the hell just happened?” Jungkook whined as he looked around the outside. Still dark as a pupil with the moon covered by clouds that appeared from nowhere. Masking the once bright guiding light it provided. “Y/n?” He looked around, you weren’t there. He quickly stood up, too quickly as his vision blanked for a moment and a wave of dizziness washed over him as he stumbled. Rubbing his eyes as he regained his sense of balance, he looked around the abandoned yard. Taehyung moved to stand next to him, a much slower pace than his best friend.
“He threw us out,” he murmured. Taehyung looked behind him at the property line leading to the road and away from the godforsaken house. “He must be telling us to leave,” he looked at Jungkook, “but we aren’t, are we?” Jungkook shook his head.
“Abso-fuckin’-lutely not. Not when we know what’s going on and that people are being hurt.” He looked down at his feet, at his palms and remembering the broken camera and the memory card in his back pocket. He could go home now, prove so much about ghosts and the dead that roam around this house. He can’t though, his conscience wouldn’t let him. He couldn’t leave you without solace. “We promised her,” was all he said.
He was going to find your body. He swore. Taehyung nodded as he plucked the bear from his thigh and placed it on his shoulder where it sat upright and steady on his shirt. Was it strange to say a grown man walking around a haunted demon house was comforted by a possessed teddy bear who protected him? It’s a phrase best left unsaid, for his pride’s sake.
The two men started to go back around, but something stopped them. When they came back to the cellar door, it wasn’t there anymore. The door was just gone. The place in the ground where the entrance would be, was just dirt and mud with a water spigot on the side of the house, dripping with something they both assumed was most definitely not water.
Jungkook dropped to his knees, in a frenzy started digging with his hands into the disgusting mix of mud and the mystery ghost fluid in the ground. Surely if he dug, he’d bust through into the cellar he knew was there. Taehyung grabbed the back of his jean jacket as he yanked him up, screaming at him to get ahold of himself when a window from above caught their attention.
The old, rickety window shambled open and all was silent for a moment as the two boys looked up in curiosity. Thinking some random ghost who just wanted to smell the good ole night air opened the window, they were quickly jumping out of the way of something that was thrown out.
It was small, not larger than the palm of Taehyung’s hand, as it hit the grass at their feet. Taehyung looked at the curtains that were sucked out by the wind’s breeze while Jungkook knelt and picked up whatever was thrown out. Taehyung tore his eyes away from the window above with caution as he looked at the now rising Jungkook, holding a medicine bottle in his hand.
“This was in the bathroom, I found it when I was in there before,” the familiar word ‘Chlorpromazine’, reflecting in Jungkook’s vision.
“So,” Taehyung drew out the word as he hooked his thumbs in the belt loop of his skinnies. “We’re going to the bathroom together? Adventurous.” Jungkook threw the bottle at his friend who was obviously trying to get Jungkook out of the panic he buried himself in. The gesture was recognized and greatly appreciated. No wonder the ghost bear liked him so much.
The two of them hiked it back to the front of the house where they saw a blurred silhouette of a very blurry dog. Remembering what you told him earlier about the animals being coherently on their side, he reassured the friend at his side who raised his fist. Yeah, like he was going to throw hands at a ghost, real clever fella he is in the face of danger.
Walking inside for the third time for the young Jeon, he noticed that there were animals in the rooms. The living room held a dog, the same dog from earlier as he sat in the doorway. His ghost tongue hanging from his almost smiling chops. The kitchen was a monkey, Taehyung almost smiled as he saw it’s figure having a ball along the ceiling and the small noises of it swinging to and fro from whatever was in there. From further back in the house, Jungkook practically fist pumped the air with the loud, vibrating belt of mighty elephant. He whipped around to an ever confused Taehyung as he looked at the car laying on the top of the landing at the top of the stairs.
“These are the spirits Y/n’s little brother gifted to his toys. Tae, they’re not going to hurt us.” Taehyung relaxed as he saw his best friend no longer frowning, but smiling at the animals who signified a save zone. Even if temporary.
The two made it up the stairs as the cat that lay at the landing stretched and pranced around the giant hole in the floor and turned into the bathroom. Okay, so whatever was in there was harmless- the animals said so after all.
With care sidles along the wall, the boys came into the tiled, dirty bathroom with the water still dripping one drop at a time into the full tub.
“Was that always full?” Taehyung questioned as he pointed accusingly at the tub.
“Yeah, it was earlier too,” Jungkook replied.
“Ah,” a rather short, unpleasant response of confirmation. Enough to get the point across that it was both disturbing and confusing for this full bathtub to be a thing when the water has long been shut off. The two watched as the cat sat at the side of the tub and then both boys let out unattractive shouts of terror when someone started to come out of the water.
The clear water turned murky when a little boy with the shaggiest, wet hair sat up. The water of the deep tub hit just at his chest as he sat and piddled his hands in the water to make small splashes. He was just a child having fun and playing at bath time. Jungkook looked at Taehyung as he just shook his head.
“No way,” he whispered at his gaze as Jungkook then approached the tub’s edge in the end. He knelt down and placed his fingertips in the water. The little boy followed the foreign ripples and looked at Jungkook, and Taehyung with the bear behind him. He smiled so innocently.
“Hello there,” Jungkook softly spoke. “Do you like playing in the water?” The little boy nodded eagerly. “Would you mind if I played a bit too, with you that is? The boy silently seemed to want to laugh as he turned and motioned to a dirty rubber duck on the edge of the tub where a bar of soap could sit snuggly. Reaching over he looked at it.
The yellow paint was chipped in places and it was horribly faded. The face had only one eye still painted black while the blue and purple paint scarf was patchy. The sailor hat on the duck was still a shade of navy blue though. It was stiff, not having the warmth and usage of a child for a very long time. “Is this your favorite toy?” The boy nodded again. “Well, he’s mighty dirty. I think this sailor needs a bath too.” The boy splashed happily as Jungkook scrunched his nose cutely to his new little friend and stuck the toy under the water and gently cleaned it.
He thumbed off the as much dirt he could. Some coming off in chunks other bits smearing and wiping off. Soon, the duck wasn’t perfect, but significantly better. The little boy smiled as he reached out for it, wanting to bad to have his toy back. Jungkook gently placed the toy in his hand and it was like the toy and little boy were alive again.
The little boy's body glowed and his skin was honey tanned and hair dark and damp. The duck looked bright and newer than ever. The boy mouthed a happy ‘thank you’ without actually speaking before he disappeared and the tub began to drain. Once the water was gone, at the bottom of the tub sat a hairpin. Picking it up he stood and bowing once to the tub, trying to honor and say goodbye to that sweet little ghost boy as he went to Tae’s side.
“So, you played with a ghost kid. We’re just meeting all sorts of ghosts, huh?” Jungkook nodded as he showed Taehyung the pin. It was thin, black and one of those you could run your thumb over and glitter would suddenly be fused with your skin for the next three days. It was far from a fancy pin, but if a little girl who had long bangs needed to pin them back, it’d be the perfect hairpiece. “So, where too now chef?”
“Y/n mentioned something about a ghost in the kid’s room closet.” Taehyung though as he cupped his chin.
“Come to think of it, that closet didn’t open for me. I couldn’t get it open to save my life.” Jungkook nodded as Taehyung took the hairpin from his palm and held it in his own.
“It’s because Vivi doesn’t like people who don’t knock.”
The two of them moved carefully to the children’s room. Inside on the bottom bunk of the bed sat plethora of small animal ghosts. Small bears, snakes, tigers, lions even a T-rex sat miniature sized on the torn up mattress. Y/n’s little brother sure had a heart full of love for all his toys, just as you said.
They moved to stand in front of the closet as Taehyung moved forward. He was the one who tried to barge in earlier, so he’d suck it up and stop being a weenie for once and apologize for his lack of manners: in this case, not knocking. He took a shaky breath, gripping the hairpin in his hand as he knocked three soft times.
The door handle turned as the door cracked open and a little girl, no older than 7 stood at Taehyung’s midsection. Looking up at him through her long, thick locks that covered half her face. Her one visible eye a shining blue contrasted to her colorless body. He knelt down to one knee as the girl’s head followed him as they were eye to eye now. He smiled to her, making her shoulders drop any tension they once had.
“Why are you hiding in your closet? I’m sure all the animals here would love to play with you?” The older man suggested as he gestured to the animals gathered on the bed. “Wouldn’t you like to play with some friends?” She nodded but remained in the closet, hands gripping the door handle in fear.
“They would tease me,” she whimpered.
“Tease you? A sweet little girl like you? No way,” he cooed as opened his palm and showed her the hairpin. “Tell me, is this your hairpin?” He saw her eye shine in recognition. “A sweet little boy showed us where you lost it and asked to give it back to its pretty owner next door.” The little girl peeked out just a bit more to glance over into the bathroom across the way.
“Did he finally get to play?” Taehyung looked over his shoulder to Jungkook behind him, then back to the girl in front of him.
“He had a blast playing with my friend here. They splashed and played with his favorite duck. Now, it’s your turn to play with your friends.” He slowly reached forwards and the pin was able to clip into her hair, pulling her bangs fully back where the other half of her face showed an empty socket where her other shining blue eye should be. So, she lost an eye somehow. How tragic for such a small child. “Is that why you’re too shy to go play?”
“The grown-ups always made fun of me,” she cried as her one eye allowed a small crystal tear run down her ghostly face. “They wouldn’t let me go out and make friends because I was too scary.”
Taehyung shook his head as he poked at the little girl’s tummy and smiled at her when she let out a little giggle. “Well, can I be your friend then? And this little guy will be your friend too,” Taehyung spoke to the teddy still sat on his shoulder. “If we're your friends, then those fun little rascals behind me would love to play with you for as long as you want.” She gasped in glee.
“Would they play hide and seek with me?” He nodded.
“It’s their favorite game. Go on and play now, Vivi.” She smiled wide as she pushed open the closet door fully and stepped out. She hugged Taehyung around his neck as she giggled in his ear and placed something in his hand before she ran off to the crowd of animals behind her. She chatted away before running out of the room, laughing the entire way until the laughter faded, leaving only a gentle, pleasant breeze.
Taehyung stood up as Jungkook clapped his back. “Good job, now we both have some cute little ghost friends.” Taehyung laughed as he looked at the key in his hand. It was old, really old. The end looped like an oval while the front of it was shaped like it would slide into a music box. “Where would there be a music box around here?”
“I think I remember seeing one downstairs on one of the dining room shelves.” Taehyung recollected. The two worked their way out of the room, but not before saying goodbye to their friendly ghost companions. They would surely remember to always mind their manners now.
Just as Taehyung said, downstairs sat a single, wooden music box. It sat about eye level with the boys as they tried to take it off the shelve, but it shouldn’t budge. It was like it was attached on. Not wanting to possibly break anything and create a panic or worse stir up more trouble, Taehyung just placed the key in the music box on the shelf. With 3 good cranks, the key locked in place, sticking out of the keyhole and started turned counter-clockwise and a small melody began to play.
It was a soft tune, friendly and warm. As Jungkook listened, the more it reminded him of you and how you were a warm presence, despite you being a ghost. Once the soft lullaby ended the key was spit back out and the wall next to the shelf slid open to reveal a hidden wall. A secret passage of sorts. Taehyung picked up the key and placed it next to its rightful partner; the lovely little box of lullabies.
“Well,” Jungkook chirped, “if ever I’ve seen a horror movie-”
“We’re so going into the new hidden door. Let’s move Mr. Ghost-Professional.” Taehyung interrupted as he shoved his friend's shoulder and the two began to shimmy through the small passageway. It wasn’t long before the passage leads to a small opening in the floor with a ladder leading down.
“This has to go to the cellar.” The ever attached bear of Taehyung’s moved to his head as the two began to descend the ladder without second thoughts. It’s not like they’d through in the towel now anyways. The assumption was correct. The boys had indeed found themselves back to the cellar.
You were held captive against the wall from shadows, but the demon was nowhere around.
“Y/n…!” Jungkook breathed as he ran to you and touched the black restraining you. The shadows were just shadows. They were a strange, disgusting black goop that felt like slime and peeled like tar as he shook his hand away from it’s gross, slimy texture. Though, regardless of how revolting, he reached your mouth and dug away the grime from your throat. Once you were free of the black from your tongue, you coughed and hung your head low. “Y/n,” he repeated, “please, talk to me. Say something.” He pleaded as Taehyung joined his side.
The bear looked at your ‘unconscious’, dull eyes figure and as it did before when it comforted you. It shook it’s furry body and rang like a bell. The ringing reverberated in your head as your eyes came back to life, regaining their ghostly glow as you were finally able to see the two boys- two friends in front of you.
“Jungkook, Taehyung?” The nodded. “How did you get here?” They looked at each other and smiled.
“Vivi and the little boy in the bathtub helped us. Oh, and the animal’s of course.” Jungkook chirped.
“You.. you helped Vivi and Jacob?” The two of them explained how they were able to help make the two children smile and laugh. “Jacob was a little boy who was drowned by his mother. She believed her child was cursed since he was born without a voice. Vivi was a little girl teased constantly because when she was younger, she lost her eye in an accident. You helped them both?” The boys nodded.
“They were very sweet little kids.” You smiled.
“Thank you,” you bowed your head, best you could. Then your smiled faded as you looked back at them and turned seriously once again. “You two need to go. If he comes back, then he’ll-”
“No. We promised you, remember,” Jungkook interrupted.
“You don’t understand! Please, just-” You stopped short when you stiffened. “Go back, back away to the walls. Now, hurry!” They did so without argument. Just as they were on opposite walls, the demon pulled himself up from the fucking floor. From below? Could there be- was there another section below the cellar? The shadow moved and stood in front of you, your body that was once relaxed now shaking uncontrollably.
Jungkook stood still, staring at your expression. For the first 2 times, he’s been saved by you, you hadn’t shown your fear. Now, you were close to crying- weeping rather- as your father disgustingly stood above you. Ghost tears, it was almost an interesting concept if they weren’t being threatened to be spilled by you.
He slowly shuffled to a shelf, grabbing a nearby bottle and quickly throwing it. The bottle shattered on the ground, making the shadow turn and screech. Jungkook covered his ears, hissing. The shadow stepped away from you, just a bit. He still hadn’t located Jungkook yet.
Taehyung understanding gave his small, stuffed possessed companion a nod. A shield of sorts surrounded the both of them. Taehyung was officially safe. “Hey!” He shouted. The shadow whipped around. Seeing the spiritual essence around Taehyung, he marched with heavy steps forward.
“Wrong way!” Now, it was Jungkook’s turn. He held that scented wax so tightly in his warm palm, it threatened to begin to melt. He remained completely still, not moving a muscle. When the shadow turned again, Taehyung sprint to a shelf of alcohol bottles. Pushing every bottle off, they shattered on the hardwood floor one by one.
“You've had enough beer, pal!” Taehyung chided. You watched the two continue to jerk around and confuse the shadow- your father. Back and forth, like a game of pong with your father as the ball. While the boys continued to distract the reel shadow demon, the teddy by Taehyung’s side rung, that same rining echoing into the small enclosure of the cellar.
A loud screech ripped out of the shadow as he turned his back on the sound. It seemed to cradle it’s head as it screamed and the shadow of its body almost seemed to fluctuate. It was like bells hurt the beast? The beast raised it's arms into the air, ready to strike into the ground.
You forced yourself from the shadow’s harsh imprisonment for the first time ever. You focused your entire body before you ripped free of its confines. You were quick to get to Jungkook’s side who was currently in the way of taking the brunt of the soon to come smash of your father’s fists. Desperate to save him, you made your entire body tangible and wrapped your arms around his shoulders, your head next to his own.
Jungkook instinctively held you against him. It was odd, holding you. You were solid, but light. It was like he was hugging a breathing person, but you were so cold. He didn’t fell the beat of your heart, didn’t feel the pushing of your chest against his when you breathed. You were a dead person, a ghost, yet he held you.
The shadow slammed his fists into the floor with utter rage, the wood splitting and creating chaos. Taehyung lost his balance as he fell against the back wall, the bear floating to his chest, still protecting him with a shield of sorts. The hole created by the beast was jagged as Jungkook and yourself fell through it. All while the demon faded away for the time being mid-tantrum.
Jungkook groaned, falling through the floor for the second time that night. He looked at your exhausted ghostly body. Your spiritual glow fluctuating as you seemed so tired, too tired. He wanted to open his mouth and ask about your state, but the sound of bells silenced him. They weren’t the sound of that dumb bear. This sound was much different. So pure, innocent in a sense.
Jungkook got up, following the sound of the bells, leaving your ghostly body to lay on the ground. He didn’t exactly know how to help someone he could no longer grasp. He ran until he found a single case hidden in the underneath hideaway of the cellar floor. Inside that case was none other than a skeleton, full body with a set of bells next to the yellow and while colored skull.
Down the way, your spirit fluctuated until it blew into a graceful wisp of blue. You traveled the wind until you found Jungkook; until you found your bones. Jungkook watched in awe, it was like your soul was dancing around the body long lost to you. A bright flame of peace. He smiled as the bells floated towards him and he reached out with his palm as they fell into his hand.
Your spirit manifested once more- for the last time- now in a beautiful, white sundress. He smiled as did you. You came towards him, relief in your ghostly gaze. You kissed his cheek, your flame giving warmth and spreading a wisp of blue along with it.
“Thank you, Jungkook. Give my thanks to Taehyung as well.”
“I will,” he almost choked. Your spirit sprung to life, your fire bright as your spirit shot up the ceiling and out of the cellar floor- scaring the poor Taehyung mind you. Your fierce, powerful, free spirit easily located your tainted, evil father in the house and quickly wasted no time in surrounding him. Your fire latched onto his shadows, devouring it as the spirits and ghosts of your comrades, his other victims, joined your plight to finally put your father down.
“You’ve done enough, Father.” The shadows pulled back from the host form of your father just enough to see his grotesque face once more. Burned, disfigured and rotten was his flesh from the long age of his demons. His time was ending, and he would get what he finally deserved. You seethed and sneered at his face. “Begone, you wretched disgrace.” Engulfed by his shadows once more, he was ignited by your pure light and disappeared. Along, so did you. Your presence, and those others not gone.
The house was finally vacant.
Jungkook climbed back up to the cellar, Taehyung helping him as he looked at the motionless bear at Taehyung’s feet.
“Was she- I mean did Y/n?”
“Yeah. she’s gone now.”
“Oh,” he spoke with a dip in his voice. “I didn’t even get to say goodbye.”
“Let’s get out of here, Taehyung.” Tae nodded as he reached down and grabbed the bear at his feet, not hesitating to take the little guy along with him back to the surface. Perhaps he had gotten a bit attached.
With the disperse of the demon, the cellar door had reappeared and the two men crawled out onto the lawn outside once again. They rounded the house and soon took the way walk back up to the sideway at the edge of the property before turning and staring back at the house.
“So,” Taehyung started, “what was it like?”
“What was what like? Nearly dying?”
“Hitting on a ghost.”
“Oh my god,” Jungkook left, Taehyung laughing behind him as he held your bells tight and safe in his palm.
XXX
The following week, your remains were found by the police when Tae put in an ‘anonoymous message’ that someone was found going into that house. Now, somehow that house- your house- was scheduled for destruction within the month. Jungkook sat in Taehyung’s room as he flipped through his newest comic he nabbed at a store downtown.
“You think they’ll rebuild over the property?” Taehyung asked as Jungkook shrugged.
“Beats me. It’d be nice if they didn’t. Maybe put a small little cemetery or memorial instead.” Taehyung nodded with a smile.
“You should pitch that idea. It’s a good one, and I’m sure the city hall would listen since a body was discovered.” Jungkook smiled as he looked out the window of his best friend’s room. The sunny sky devoid of any pesky clouds.
“You know, I think I just might,” Jungkook said. He wanted to put a grave down for you, and all the other ghosts too. For Vivi and for Jacob who were just innocent children who hadn’t done wrong; far too young for death’s unfair grip.
That’s what he thought as he watched over the sewn up and cleaned teddy bear on Tae’s window sill. The jingling of the two bells around his wrist that had been weaved and carefully placed onto a precious new bracelet he wore wherever he went- without exception- as they always seemed to jingle in approval.
Yes, a memorial was a fine idea. Maybe he did like you a little bit- just a ghost of a crush.

(let me know if you would like to be tagged when I update!)
The next morning, you woke up with a headache. You didn’t remember coming back to the hotel the night before, but you did remember having the time of your life with your friends at the bar.
The rest of the boys were awake and watching something on television. Harrison was sitting up in bed next to you, and the second you saw him, you knew he didn’t get much sleep. The bags under his eyes were darker than you had seen them in a long time, but your worry melted away when his smile crinkled up his under-eyes.
“Good morning, sleepyhead,” he said. You groaned in response and pulled the sheets over your head to shield your eyes from the sunlight.
Tom had called for room service and ordered everyone breakfast. You were lucky enough to wake up a few minutes before it got there.
After you were all finished eating, you packed up your few belongings and brought them to the car to finish the drive to your new apartment. The dread in your stomach made you move slowly, but you knew that no matter how slow you took your steps, you would be in Adam’s arms by nightfall.
As you waited for the rest of the boys to finish bringing their things to the car, Harrison pulled you aside.
“Hey, you don’t happen to remember the walk home last night, do you?”
“Oh god, what did I do?”
“Nothing,” he chuckled.
“You wouldn’t have asked if it was nothing.”
“You got me there. It was nothing though, you just got a little upset and I carried you home. You wouldn’t tell me what was going on though, so I was just going to ask if there was something you wanted to talk about.”
He of course was lying, but he wanted to present the chance for you to tell him about your feelings about the move and Adam while you were sober.
“Oh, well that’s not as bad as you led me to think. But I’m sure I was just emotional drunk. You know how I can get,” You lied right back.
You knew exactly why you had been upset. You thanked your brain for not letting the truth slip through your loose, intoxicated lips. The last thing you wanted was to let anyone know about that dread in the last stretch.
Harrison just sadly nodded at your reply and went to grab his belongings. You were too focused on the fact that you had almost blew it to notice his change in demeanor.
The five of you made your way into the car and set off. The atmosphere felt a lot heavier than the day before. The windows were still down, and the music was just as loud, but no one was singing along anymore.
Each of you were secretly praying for some kind of halt to the journey. None of you wanted to let go.
The boys had one more stop planned, and that helped them cheer up a little. It was initially Harry’s idea to ask you to model for him one last time back home. He was going to bring you to one of the spots that he had always wanted to shoot, but the other boys talked him out of it. They said that they would find a better spot along their route for him to stop and take pictures of you. They had said that if he didn’t approve of the spot beforehand, then they would forget about it and he could go on with his original plan, but the second he saw what they had found, he forgot his plan altogether.
When the car pulled over to the side of the road, you were looking down at your phone. Adam had been texting you all morning, sending you photos of your apartment and asking when you thought you were going to arrive. You, of course, hadn’t had the heart to reply. You were doing your best to pretend like the move wasn’t happening. When you felt the car jerk to a stop, you finally looked up, and the sight before you was enough to make you gasp out an “Oh my god”. You had pulled up to a large field of flowers that stretched farther than you could see in almost every direction. The flowers were all bright and sectioned off in blocks by color. It was a rainbow like you had never seen.
“You like it?” one of the boys asked, but you were too amazed to respond. Sam got out of the car, allowing you to crawl out as well. You didn’t wait for anyone else as you approached the field. You were too enamored with the sight of the field to notice the boys behind you. Tom was taking full credit for finding the field while Sam helped Harry find all of the equipment that he had packed into the back of the car for this moment. Harrison, however, was busy looking at you. He knew you were too busy admiring the field to turn around and catch him staring, so he let himself truly soak you in. Your smile and wide eyes made his heart swell. The night before, he was happy to see you having a good time again, but he had never seen you this excited about anything. He had to force himself to look away when you shot around and ran back to them.
You were rapid firing questions to all of them, asking how they had found this place, what you were doing there, and how long you could stay. Tom ended up trying to answer all of your questions, but when he told you that they had brought you there to model for Harry, you attention turned to your former roommate.
“You should have told me, dipshit! I would have worn something better than this,” you exclaimed, gesturing towards your casual shorts and t-shirt.
“Y/n, we literally have your entire wardrobe packed into the back of the car, you are perfectly capable of changing in the backseat.”
“I hate you,” you chuckled, but wrapped Harry in a hug anyway. You were too happy to hate him.
You searched for one of your bags while the boys helped Harry find his camera bag. You found both bags at the same time, and as you searched for the dress you wanted to wear, Harry ventured off to find the spots with the best lighting and angles.
You jumped into the backseat and changed from your shorts and shirt into the sundress. Luckily the windows were tinted, so if anyone was around, they weren’t able to see you change through the windows, not that anyone was around anyway.
You exited the back seat and made sure your dress looked fine before you caught up with the rest of the group. Harry was quick to guide you to the first spot he had chosen, and Sam took the role of his grip, making sure reflectors were in place to get the best shot.
You hadn’t had any experience with real modeling, but that didn’t stop Harry from using you as one of his go to models. That was how you had initially gotten closer to Harrison. You had met him a few times through Tom, but you hadn’t spent any real time with him until the first photoshoot that Harry asked you and Harrison to do for him. That was also the first time you really realized how handsome Harrison was. Of course he was dressed for a photoshoot, and his poses were helping his appeal, but for a few months after that first shoot, you had to hide how flustered he would make you each time he would come around.
Little did you know, Harrison was thinking about that first shoot as he watched you dance around in the flowers. He fell for you just as you had fallen for him. He had always thought you were adorable, but he didn’t realize how beautiful he thought you were until that first shoot. You were wearing the same dress in that field as you did in that first shoot, and it made him wish he could go back in time. He tried to remain in the moment, he tried to keep a smile on his face, but watching you made him wish that he had gotten a chance with you before you had fallen for Adam. He knew there was nothing he could do about it anymore, but he wanted nothing more than to belong to you.
The five of you spent a couple hours in the fields of flowers. You had gotten tired of modeling, but Harry wanted to get some shots of just the flowers.
After the second hour, it was evident how exhausted everyone was, but no one would admit it. Once you were done with that stop, there was nothing else between you and your new home. The dread of the inevitable wasn’t enough to keep you there forever though. As the sun began to get lower in the sky, Tom had reluctantly suggested that you guys head back to the car. You still had to unpack all of your things from the car into the apartment, and the boys were going to try to make the entire drive back over night, although you had insisted that they just stay the night with you.
Dejectedly, you all made your way back to the car. Harry’s bags were stuffed back into their place, and you all packed into the car. Once you all had your seatbelts on, Harrison started the car, or tried to at least. The engine made a pathetic whirring sound, but it wouldn’t turn over.
Harrison cursed under his breath and continued to try for another minute, but the sounds just keep getting worse. “Want me to call a tow truck?” you asked from the backseat. Harrison didn’t want to admit defeat, but his frustration was rising. He tried to start it one more time, and you put your hand on his arm to tell him to not worry about it. He melted a little into your touch, but you suddenly had a great idea and your touch disappeared as your arm shot away from him in excitement.
“Everyone out,” you commanded with a huge smile on your face. Tension and annoyance were still heavy in the atmosphere, but you weren’t going to let it stay that way. Once you were able to get out of the door, you went around to the back of the car and grabbed your picnic blanket and spread it out on a patch of grass.
“I’ll call for a tow truck in a second, but first, we appreciate nature.”
“Y/n, that’s what we’ve been doing for the past 3 hours,” Harry sighed.
“No, we’ve been walking through a field for 3 hours, but now we’re going to sit, there’s a difference you div.”
The boys all sat on the blanket as you instructed and faced the field. It wasn’t late enough to watch a sunset, but the sun was low enough in the sky to turn the atmosphere golden around the flowers. It was beautiful, and you wouldn’t have been able to see it while in the field. You had to take a step back to really admire it.
You sat in-between Harry and Harrison, resting your head on Harrison’s shoulder as you admired the flowers. You decided to pull out your phone and call the truck so you weren’t stuck there for too long. You grabbed your phone out of your pocket, and your stomach churned at the sight of the notifications on your screen. There were 6 missed calls from Adam and 15 texts. He was never like that, but from the looks of the last few texts, you knew it wasn’t an emergency so you ignored it.
Harrison had seen your notifications as well, and was surprised to see you ignore them and carry on to search for the number for a tow truck like Adam didn’t exist. It wasn’t like you to ignore someone like that, especially not your boyfriend. He had been worried about you since the interaction the night before, and this didn’t help that. He knew something really had to be wrong for you to flat out ignore him.
When you called for the tow truck, they said they would be there in 15 minutes, and that they were going to send out a second truck so they could bring everyone to the shop. After you told the boys, the rest of the wait was spent in silence, admiring the field in front of you.
When the trucks arrived, you watched as they hitched Harrison’s car before you got into one of the trucks with Harry. Within 15 minutes, you were sat in the shop as they worked on the car. They said it would be an easy fix and you should be out of there in an hour or two.
This had been the delay that you had been hoping for, there was no way you were going to be able to make it to Adam that night. You were going to be with your friends for one more night, and you had never been more thankful for a shitty car.
The five of you sat waiting, making terrible jokes to pass the time. Tom had found a hotel not far from the shop for you guys to stay the night, but you had forgotten to inform Adam of the delay. It would have completely escaped your mind if he hadn’t have called while you were sitting there.
Your phone began to buzz in your lap, and you ignored it on instinct, but Harrison noticed.
“Your phone’s ringing,” he pointed out, making you snap into reality. You looked down to see Adam’s contact information on the screen. Now that someone else’s attention was on it, you couldn’t exactly ignore the call, so you cursed under your breath before you excused yourself to take the call outside.
“Where are you? I’ve been calling for hours,” Adam began, worriedly without so much as a hello as soon as you hit the answer button.
“Hey, Adam, sorry. The car broke down and we’re in the shop right now. I don’t think we’re going to make it tonight.”
“Well, I could come get you. Just need to tell me where you are.”
“That’s really not necessary. I can just finish the drive tomorrow.”
“Will you though?”
His voice suddenly sounded colder than you had ever heard it, more accusing than you had ever been spoken to. It caught you completely off-guard.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, is this really about the car?”
“What do you want me to walk the rest of the way?”
“Picking you up would be no hassle, so why don’t you want me to?”
“Adam, all I’m saying is that there was an unexpected delay. One night isn’t the end of the world.”
“First it was the lease, then it was this idiotic road trip with your idiot friends, now it’s the car, so what is it going to be tomorrow? Are you going to get lost in town? You’re putting off coming, y/n.”
“And why would I be doing that?”
You knew he was right, but there was no way you were going to let him have that satisfaction.
“I don’t know, why don’t you tell me.”
“It’s not what I’m doing, so I couldn’t tell you.”
“Whatever, I’ll see you tomorrow.”
With that, Adam hung up. He had never done so without saying he loved you first. That wasn’t what upset you most though. He had never liked your friends, but he had never insulted them. He had suggested you not do certain things with them, or to stay with him instead of going out with them some nights, but he had never called them idiots. And the fact that he was accusing you of not wanting to come upset you too, although deep down, you knew he was right. You were ready to angry cry, but before you could even react to the phone call, Harrison opened the door behind you.
“Hey, everything alright?”
He had seen your facial expression through the window while the rest of the boys were distracted, and he almost wished he hadn’t looked. You looked broken, and he couldn’t stay put. It took all of his strength to not run out and hug you. Instead, he calmly made his way out to check on you.
“Everything’s fine, why?”
“You, uhm, looked pretty upset on the phone.”
“Oh, that. Yeah, Adam is just a little annoyed that I won’t be there tonight, but it’s not a big deal.”
He nodded, but you didn’t see because you were doing your best to avoid eye contact. You were afraid you would cry if you looked up, and the last thing you wanted in that moment was for Harrison to see you cry.
“Do you need a hug?” he asked, still not convinced that anything was ok in the moment.
“I don’t need one, but I could never pass up a hug from you,” you giggled. He smiled and wrapped you in the tightest hug he could muster. He was less worried with you in his arms.
In that moment, he decided that he wasn’t going to waste one more second of what little time he had left with you. He came up with a plan on how to make it a night you would never forget. You both needed it.

Isekai Lucio AU
This was done for @junkpilestuff and their awesome idea of Lucio waking up in our modern era world and I HAD. TO. JUMP. ON. THAT. Here’s the finished product. Warning: This is pretty long and it’s dialogue heavy but whatchya gonna do? Read under the cut~
A flash of red, burning pain throughout my body...my vision go black...then...
Darkness...swirling around in darkness...but I feel so...light. I’m...fading…my senses are mixed and...and...
…..
And what’s that horrible smell?!
Lucio’s eyes flash open and he jerks up with a heavy gasp, sweating. He squints away from the blinding light, settling himself down from whatever just happened.
It was probably just a weird dream...but why do I smell...whatever that is? Ugh! Dirt!
He opens his eyes, adjusting to the bright light and recoils his hand from the ground shaking away any residue that was on it. He scowls at the filth around him before finally getting up and wiping the dirt off his now grimy white suit. He looks up and his mouth drops. He’s standing in an alleyway next to a large trash can covered in graffiti, skyscrapers towering above, taller than his beloved palace. The unfamiliar sound of sirens and cars fills his ears and he quickly runs out the street. Everywhere, people everywhere.
Absolutely...FILTHY people! And why are they dressed so...bad?
The New Yorkers stare at him and his attire. It’s not completely unusual for the Big Apple to see weirdos like this. But his look is so...outlandish that many thought he might just actually dress like that. Lucio was twirling, back and forth, trying to take in his surroundings. The last thing he remembers before waking up here...Nadia. She killed me...that absolute BITCH! Lucio stomps down his heeled foot like a child. He growls, anger pulsing out of him like heat before he is almost bumped into the street by a burly man in a faded suit.
“Hey! Watch where you’re goin’ bub!” the man yells back at Lucio.
“YOU sir, were the one who hit me! How dare you! Do you know who I am?!”
“Not a clue,” the man laughs, “what a weirdo…” he chuckles to himself, disappearing into the crowd. Lucio huffs, and twirls to face whatever is before him. He scans the area, eyes falling on...what are those?
Large windows displaying colors and people lined up and down the buildings showing beautiful people just...staring and smiling, sometimes holding perfume or fine jewelry. Lucio stopped when he saw him. On the...I think I heard someone say...jumbotron, Lucio saw one of the most beautiful men he had ever seen, almost as beautiful as him. Hmph, I could beat that. If Nadia doesn’t want me in Vesuvia then I can be the best here. Everyone can love me, he thought immediately.
With his large golden claw, he grabs a passerby on the shoulder and turns them toward him.
“You! Who is that up there?” He points his fleshed hand up at the screens. A stunned young man, scrawny and red-eyed looks at the advertisement for Calvin Klein underwear.
“Uhhh I don’t know man...just some model dude?” He takes a sip of his soda he had been holding, not breaking his somewhat impressive eye contact with Lucio.
“A model? How do I do that?”
“Uhhhhh lots of dudes just get famous on Instagram really or like...make a youtube channel”
“A wha-youtube? Instagram? Quit being so obscure! And just tell me damn it!” Lucio grabs the guys shirt with both hands and shakes him a bit. “Okay okay! Jeez, my dude, I have a buddy who does photos for a living I can introduce you...but I don’t know if he’ll wanna take your picture since you’re such a...douche”
Lucio’s eyes widen, “A WHAT?”.
“Nevermind, just follow me” and the young pothead leads Lucio to his friend’s apartment.
“By the way, that’s a siiiiick arm, my man. You cosplayin’ someone or…”
“This is my arm and yes it is quite...sick? I’m assuming that’s good in this world” Lucio said matter of factly.
“Hehe...yeahhh...super sick”
“What is your name? It’s not that I care but I have no idea what to call you.”
“Ah it’s Jesse my liege,” he tips an imaginary hat at Lucio and do a little bow “and yours?”
“Count Lucio of Vesuvia. Grand ruler, military leader, excellent lover…” He smirks down at Jesse, running his claw through his blonde locks.
“Heh, schweet love the confidence, my man”
They continue down a few more blocks before they arrive at the apartment of Jesse’s friend. Jesse knocks a little tune on his friend's door before it cracks open just a smidge. His friend’s eye peers through the crack.
“What’s the password compadre?” Jesse’s friend asks ominously from behind the door.
“Lmao, the password is SUCK MY WEENUS! AAAAAYYYYY”
“AYYYYYY” they yell in unison. The door slams closed. Locks on the other side jangle as they fall off the door and unlock. The friend opens the door with large arms wide open.
“My dude, Dan, let me introduce THE Count Lucio”. Dan, the man behind the door, stares at Lucio and his grandeur.
“Yo, you’re mega hot not gonna lie” Dan praises. Lucio blushes for a split second before his signature smirk returns to his face.
“Ha! Of course, I am,” Lucio parades past Dan into his too small apartment. He lands, light as a feather onto the tattered and stained leather couch, “And that’s why I’m here dear Dan. YOU are going to have the privilege of photographing ME!” He extends his body seductively along the couch, leg raised straight up high and an over exaggerated pout on his lips. Dan raises a quizzical eyebrow and looks over at Jesse. Jesse, taking a drag of his vape (Where did he pull that from, Dan thought) just shrugs his shoulders and blows the vapor into his friend’s face.
“Dan, the man...you are the man and you take awesome photos. This dude wants to be a model and I thought ‘Well I’m bored and I bet Dan is up to nothing so why not?’ so now we’re here and I’m high and I’m vaping and you’re staring at me and that flamboyant weirdo is excited to model so, like, why not?”
There’s silence...Dan just slowly looking back and forth at his friend and then at Lucio. Lucio blows him a kiss and winks. With a sigh, Dan resigns to the requests.
“Fine. But only because I’m bored!” Lucio jumps up and claps his hands together.
“Excellent decision Dan! Now, what should I do? I should pose like some of my portraits maybe? Do you have a skull from an enemy I can hold? Maybe some fine jewels I can lavish myself in?”
“Uh no...but like, you can just take off your shirt. Ladies LOVE a shirtless dude.” He extends his fingers into small, pudgy finger guns and waves them at Lucio.
Lucio obeys immediately. It’s not every day people ask him to strip. He enjoys the attention. This is going to be FANTASTIC.
A while later, Dan and Jesse had set up the lights, the camera, and simple white background for Lucio to model in front of. Lucio had stripped down to just his pants, although Dan and Jesse had to stop him from going past that. After explaining he did NOT need a skull to stand on, and that most models just pout and pose fairly naturally, Lucio began to get into the groove of it all, displaying his muscles the best he could and giving the camera winks every now and then. Dan uploaded the photos to his Instagram after doing a bit of filtering and face tuning, and they waited for the responses to start flooding into the comments section. Lucio paced back and forth, his heeled boots click-clacking on the hardwood floor.
“What are we waiting for? Surely I should be on that big screen by now!”
“Ahh, that’s not how that works my dude…” Jesse explained flatly, not taking his eyes off the TV screen. Just as Lucio’s face turns red with impatience at these...fools... a high pitched “Ding!” resonates from Dan’s little device. And then another...and another and another...soon Dan is launching himself across the couch to silence his phone.
“Yooo what the fuck...you’re blowing up Lucio!” His eyes widen at the screen, his greasy finger scrolling through all the comments and likes on his photos. “Oh my god...GIGI HADID SAID SHE THINKS YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL!” Lucio waves his hand absently “Yes, yes I know I am. I don’t care who this Gugu is, am I FAMOUS now?”
Dan’s jaw drops. In his direct messages are requests for Lucio to model for big brands. Other models are asking who he is, designers are wondering how Dan discovered him.
“My dude, you’re gonna be famous” Lucio delivers a flashy smile to Jesse and Dan. Jesse goes in for a fist bump but Lucio slaps it away with his claw.
~
Months later, and Lucio is signed with some of the biggest modeling agencies in the world. He’s walking for Valentino, Gucci (his personal favorite), Prada, you name it, he’s modeled it. The extravagance he receives from his work is unmatched to that of Vesuvian riches; it’s BETTER. Fine clothes, drunken nights with the world’s most beautiful people, all the men and women he could dream of being with, everything! He has it all. He was even on the jumbotron. He hid his face from others, a single tear rolling down his cheek. He had made it. Lucio’s face and body were gracing every major advertisement medium- commercials, magazines, runways, even the sides of buses. One day, however, his lust for himself gets the best of him.
While walking down the busy city streets, paparazzi began flanking him.
“Lucio look over here!”
“No Lucio look here, look over here darling!” Lucio complied, striking pose after pose, strutting down the street. With a sexy smile and wink, he began to walk backward, arms up wide in pride. “Yes, New York! This is your COUNT your GOD! I AM THE BEST MODEL IN THE WORL-”
A bus slams into him.
A collective gasp from all the photographers is followed by silence, then by the flashing of lights and cameras. The bus, displaying Lucio’s own image, is the last thing the Count remembers seeing before blacking out.
Head pain...swimming in agony and...riches….darkness is creeping up again
Do I smell bath salts?
Lucio startles awake. He’s lying on a soft, luxurious bed, still dressed in his silk Gucci attire. A scream startles him and he looks to his side seeing a palace servant screech and run out of the room. Moments later, Nadia enters, her face at first shocked, then replaced with a scowl.
“You’re supposed to be dead Lucio, we were fixing you for a funeral. That was the least- actually-the most I could do for you” She crosses her arms, not at all pleased in the slightest. “And what are you wearing?” she asks coldly.
“It’s Gucci, bitch”.

Mineo Enomoto Character CD Mini-Drama Translation
T/N: This is a translation of the mini-drama that comes with Mineo’s character CD. Though a subbed fan video may come later, I haven’t uploaded the audio alongside this. If you buy the CD (Animate | CDJapan (Ltd Edition) | Play-Asia) or already have the track available, you can follow along while reading this! Thanks also to @jokertrap-ran for helping me proofread!
Translation key: Ichika’s thoughts: ellipses... | (Mineo’s thoughts) | [sound effects]
A Talk Between Two in the Steam
(Mineo Enomoto. 23 years old. Spring’s finally come for me too, and I’ve been spending happy days with my girlfriend. It’s truly a rose-colored life!)
(As for the love bible I stuck with, ‘100 Heart-Jerking Love Confessions’, I haven't opened it again. The reason why being… Now, by my own determination, I'm climbing up the stairway of adulthood! That's right. The stairway of adulthood that is traveling to the hot springs with my girlfriend...!)
Ngh… All right. The hostess left. God, I've been holding back since earlier. I…feel like I'm gonna explode...
...
Heh. So you noticed too, huh? It's just the two of us now… So… it's okay if I don't hold back anymore, right...?
Then… I'll say it.
--AT LONG LAST! SETTING FOOT UPON THE PLACE WHERE DATE MASAMUNE AND COMPANY ACHIEVED THEIR DREAMS - WE'VE ARRIIIIVED!!
Oh, man! I’ve wanted to try coming here for so long! I'm so glad I boldly launched the suggestion at you! It'd be boring going alone after all, y’know? I'm really grateful that you decided to come along with me.
...
Yeah, yeah! When Masamune and his company were here, his role in defending against and resisting outside invaders is what revived them…!
…
Huh? I'm as excited as a kid?
Hmph - well, I'm sorry. I'm a kid who admires Masamune so much I have an eyepatch for him after all. I mean, him being from the Sendai era would more than grab my attention…
But that's fine! I’m here with the same kindred spirit as him after all! Even without words, we'll be able to understand each other! This is - the MASAMUNE SPIRIT!
Whoops, I got kinda fired up there. Let's go bathe separately first!
(Hooo! The smell of cypress is real soothing…)
(A chance to be able to take a carefree bath like this rarely comes by… With the trip in general, I asked where she wished she could go, wanting to bring her there as a man should. But we ended up coming here ultimately.)
(But still, she came with me without pulling a single face.)
(Even though I didn't know what a mashed green soybean flavored shake would taste like, it was so cool when we both took no notice just drinking from our straws…! We tried to drink it at the same time and we ended up bumping our foreheads. But, when we looked up at each other, and started laughing after that…! Eheh! Eheheheheheh!)
(But, man, her eyelashes are so long... I couldn’t help but notice when she was looking at the shake… Ugh! What am I, Shiraishi now?!)
(...No. That’s not it. She's the only one I end up making observations of. That's just ‘cause I love her and I can't help but do that. In other words - I just feel like saying something…)
(Traveling with my girlfriend is THE BEEEEST...!!)
...Ah! Over here, over here! How was it? Did you enjoy the hot spr--! CU--!
(Gh! W-Wow… She looks amazing wearing a yukata…! It-can't-be-it-looks-too-good-on-her-more-than-that-it's-seriously-so…!)
E-Eh?! Oh, n-no no, it's nothing! More importantly, how were the hot springs? Were you able to relax in there?
…
Yeah, I feel you. The cypress floating in the bath gave it a classic Japanese feel, didn't it?
…
Ah. I saw the arcade corner too while I was waiting, but this also seems pretty promising. We might as well, so what game do you…?
…
Oh? The photo booth together?
Ohh, you wanna take some pictures? Well, we can write words onto them, so it’ll be something to commemorate our trip! Heheh. I have to brag about this to Takeru and Yanagi…!
…
Whooa…! So this is the famous… Ah, I’m not so good at handling complicated controls, so I’ll leave that to you!
Even though… I wonder what people who have it all would think in a situation like this… Ah, nothing, just talking to myself.
Oh, are we taking one now? What pose should we do?
…
Ehhh…? Clapping our hands together softly then making our faces small after? That seems cool. Let’s try that out!
[click!]
Wow! Look at those visual effects! Well, your face is small and cute to begin with, though--
Ow! What was that for?! It’s not something to hit me over!
…
Huh? Could it be you’re…being shy...?
! What’s with that…? If you suddenly make a face like that…even I’ll--
[click!]
Ah--?! I wasn’t looking at the camera…! Right, we’re still in the middle of taking pics, aren’t we? For a pose... Doing a generic peace sign should be a safe bet, right?
[click!]
The next one’s the last. Then we gotta go out with a bang. Plus we’ve come this far… Should we do a Date Masamune-like pose here?
…
Huh? ...You wanna take one with us holding hands…?
! What’s with that adorable request…?! Gah! If you’re okay with my hand, then do as you like!
…
O-Oh… I should sit closer, huh…
...You know. I’m...really happy right now.
[click!]
Next comes writing on them, yeah? There are two copies, so let's take one each and show what we wrote on them to each other afterwards! It’ll be more exciting that way!
First things first are the icon stamps, so...
Hehe. Damn… I’m having so much fun. I’m seriously so glad I got to travel with you! Coming to a place you like with the person you love is the best!
…
Huh? What’s up? ...We only have a bit of time left to doodle on them?
Ack, s-seriously?! This wasn’t the time to feel so moved inside! There’s still so much I wanna write…!
[stylus tapping]
No! Not yet! Don’t give up, Mineo! The first photo booth session for fulfilled-real-lifers I get in my life is the one thing I can’t let go to ruin…! I’ll pour all my feelings of love into this…!!
[frantic stylus tapping]
Th-That was close…! I barely managed to finish writing… Did you finish?
…
Hehh. That’s a real piece of work. Well, I’m only able to say that now. I fashioned a considerable tour de force in there myself.
Oh, they’ve come out. Let’s see, let’s see...
Ah--! You have an eyepatch too…! I see. You drew on one with a pen, huh? Lining it up like this… It's like a matching couple look…
…
Eh? That’s what you meant to…?
! N-Now, you! Just what’re you trying to do, making me so happy?!
…
Eh--? My pictures?
W-Wait, don’t yell so loud…! There wasn’t any time writing it, and I lost myself getting into it. When it suddenly stopped, I… ‘I love you most in the world’, is what I wanted I write…
...Eh? You’re happy?
Ha. I see. If that makes you happy too, then I’m glad.
Whenever we look at these, we’ll remember today. It’s...kinda weird! Us having a calm time like this...didn’t use to be a given, either. Back then, we went through pain, through sadness. Even now, there are people out there desperately doing their best. Everyone has hard times to overcome, and their daily lives to get on with now.
...Ah, my bad. I got a little solemn there! Wait, what time is it now…? They said there’d be dinner at 7, didn’t they?
All right! There’s ox tongue calling our name! Let’s hurry...!
Ahh, I’m absolutely stuffed! That ox tongue was so thick and tasty! My feet went on their own and got three helpings for dinner! Ah, it was tough…
[tea being poured]
Oh! Thanks!
[sip]
Going back to our room after a feast and having you pouring tea for me… Maaan, it’s just perfect!
…
Oh? What now? That’s true… We’ve done what there is to do outside the ryokan for the most part…
(...)
(!)
(...!!)
(Crap…! What do I do?! I don’t know what we should do now that it’s just us two in the room…!)
(Not to mention, looking right at her in the eye while she’s in her yukata makes my heart pound-- Ah, wait. It’s awkward to keep silent. Umm, uhhh…!)
(Ah! Why don't we sleep sooner! No! It's still 9 - that's way too early!)
(What else could we do… Nnrgh…! Do you wanna explore the ryokan! What am I, some primary school kid?!)
…
Eh?! You brought playing cards…?
Oh… OHOHO, nice! Why don't we play old maid or something!
…
(Phew! What a lifesaver…!)
(...No. Hold on. Could this be…she saw me struggling and threw me a bone when I needed it? Things like this happen every time…)
(She…must be thinking that…)
…Hey. ...I, uh… I'm probably just a kid in your eyes, aren't I…?
…
I mean, today… I wanted to escort you from the beginning, but at some point I just started having fun by myself. I wanted to…be classier doing this. Heh… Even though I think it’s shameful even by my own standards…
[table slam; rattling]
Whoa! Y-You scared me… Eh, w-was that something to get angry over…?
…
! It's okay if I'm not an adult…? But I'm the older one here. At some point if things keep going like this--
…
Eh! I-I get it - calm down…!
…
Being in high spirits together with me - is fun…?
...I also enjoy being with you best. I wrote that on our pictures earlier, too. That you're the one who I…love most in the world, so…
…
Hm? That's…the one we took earlier, isn't it? Ohh. We were so pressed to get to dinner, we didn't really get to see what we wrote on it.
…
Ah! You wrote something on it, too? Let's see… Mineo, I...love you…
Th-This…! …!
Really? You also wrote you love me. To think that we get along even on this… Eheh. Man, how much do we love each other?
Hah… I'm sorry. Of course that'd make you angry. You said you love me as I am now after all. I'm not me when I force and overstretch myself. That's what you mean, right?
Hey. Come over here a bit.
…
You know, I… keep feeling like I'm acing an exam when I'm with you. Just being able to travel with you made me ecstatic, and when I saw you climbing over the rock in your yukata as well, it was…kind of…different from how you normally are. It got my heart racing. When I sat closer to you when we took pictures in the photo booth, stuff like the smell of your shampoo seriously got to me.
Then, uh… I'm saying this now, but… The truth is, I...felt a little like wanting to… k...kiss you...
…
Eh--! Stupid! Don't say stuff like you'd be glad even if I did! Don’t underestimate me. Now see here - men easily get carried away! You're someone I…want to treasure.
… [hand holding]
…!
You're…always like that.
No matter how much I run away… you chase me, hold onto me, and don't let me go. You got more guts than your outward appearance suggests. You're a cool woman.
Though this is the last time I'm making sure… It's really okay?
…
Heh. I got it. Then…
[kiss]
Your heart's pounding... Hehe. Mine is too.
But, you know. We're okay like this. Having the same feelings, we reach an understanding, and move forward together. Going like that suits us most. Though I end up putting on airs in front of you, saying what I really think like this and being natural at times is also important.
Same goes for you. If you have something you want to say, say it without holding back.
…
Oh? That face means there’s something you wanna say...! C’mon, what is it? Try saying it!
…
...Eh? ...W-...Wait a sec… I-I might've misheard you… J-Just now, what...did you say?
…
Gh--! Y-You want to sleep together...?! Wai… I-Isn't the hurdle suddenly too high?! Are we going that far up the stairway of adulthood and the like...?! I mean, it's not like I didn't think of that at all, but - I thought of taking it slow and building up to the climax where--!
…
...Eh? …Next to each other?
..Ahhh, so that'd be, uh… Sleeping snuggled up in the same futon… That kind of sleeping together?
...Ha. Hahaha! AHAHAHAHA! U-Uh, of course...! I thought that's what you meant! I-If that's what you'd like, we can do that however much you want! I’ve done that with my little sister! I'm her companion when I babysit!
…
H-Hey, hey, you don't need to pull my sleeve for me to...
…
Huh? ...Hey... Your face is - looking kinda scary...
…
Not the same as my sister…? Wh-- Ah-- Oh, no! When I said that I didn't mean it like...!
…
Wha-- Oh, w-whoa, whoa...!
Uh-- Umm… I made a slip-up, earlier. I apologized, so...please cheer up.
…
C’mon, it's not that I treat you like a little sister...! Mnghh…!
...I got it. It'll be fine if we sleep together like lovers, right? Uh… Then…
[shifting; rustling]
…How's this? It's an arm pillow. Th-This is - only something lovers do, right?
…
Gh--! Is that it…?! You little…! Even though this is plenty given the situation…! If you make too many demands now… That mouth of yours? Will be sealed shut.
…
!
Ha. Jeez… I understand how you feel veeery well. Even for me… To be this close to you, and not do anything about it…is impossible.
[kiss]
For all of today, and until morning comes… I won't let you go.

Haunted, Bluestreak for your spooky prompts
Haunted
Rating: TContinuity: G1Warnings: PTSD, flashbacks
Bluestreakfell into the couch with a hum of delight. For a change, he got one of the goodseats. “What’s on tonight?” he asked. “I know that Wednesday nights are sort ofa black hole for good television. Not a real black hole, of course, just thatthere’s usually nothing good on. But it looks like you found something!”
“It’s adocumentary on PBS,” Spike replied from his perch on Bumblebee’s knee. “I hopethat’s ok… My history tutor suggested that I watch this tonight when it wason.”
Cliffjumpergroaned. “A documentary? Isn’t that just boring slag like stories about deadpeople or stuff that happened a billion years ago?”
Laughing,Spike said, “Well, Pompeii happened almost two thousand years ago, so of courseeveryone in it’s dead. But the documentary got pretty good ratings the lasttime it was on, and my tutor promised that I’d probably enjoy it.” He gesturedat the screen where the intro to a learning show was playing. “It’s starting!”
Bluestreak grabbeda couple of the rust sticks from the table and then settled back into thecouch. “It sounds kind of interesting,” he said. “Was Pompeii a country orsomething?”
“No, it wasan ancient city that was buried by a volcano,” said Spike.
“A volcanolike… this one?” Cliffjumper asked, his voice rising slightly.
“Perceptorsaid this volcano’s safe,” said Bumblebee, patting Cliffjumper on the shoulder.
Spike helda finger up to his lips and made a shushing noise. “Guys, come on! I have tolisten to this!”
Silencefell over the corner of the rec room as the documentary started. Bluestreakmunched quietly on a rust stick and watched. He’d have to tell Prowl aboutthis; the tactician was always encouraging Bluestreak and the other Autobots tolearn more about the world they found themselves on.
The showstarted calmly enough. Shots of ancient ruins, old temples, restored mosaics. Some of them were quite intricate, and Bluestreak smiled as he remembered someof the mosaics he used to create back in –
Bluestreakdeleted that line of thought as he felt his anxiety jump. He shook out his doorwings and took another bite of the rust stick.
Then thescenes shifted. They showed people made out of plaster. Bluestreak focused onthe audio of the show, trying to figure out why all of the statues in the citywere lying down.
“Plasterwas poured into the voids that the archeologists found, creating casts of the peopleand animals that had died in the eruption. In some cases, the victim’s deaththroes were perfectly frozen in time as the extreme heat of the pyroclasticflow caused instant rigor mortis.”
The camerapanned past a plaster cast of a human lying on its back, its mouth open in agrimace.
Bluestreakfrowned at the screen and took another nibble of his rust stick. Some of theposes that the human shapes were in activated memories that he had carefullyshunted into locked folders. He quickly ran a cleanup thread to lock thosememory files up again.
“Wow,that’s crazy!” exclaimed Cliffjumper. “Hey look, isn’t that a dog?”
“Yeah,”said Spike. “All the people and animals got buried in ash, and they werediscovered over a thousand years later. Pretty cool, huh?”
The documentaryfinally switched away from the images of the plaster human shapes, andBluestreak let out a small vent of relief. On the screen, people dressed instrange clothing moved around a market. Vendors displayed their wares of variousmerchandise and food items.
“I thoughtcameras were a pretty recent invention on Earth,” Bumblebee said.
Spikenodded. “They are. These are just actors pretending to be the people who usedto live in Pompeii.” He grinned up at Bumblebee. “You can see how fashion haschanged a lot!”
The scenechanged to show a mountain in the distance. It rumbled and began throwing ashinto the air, creating a dark cloud that slowly moved towards the town.
All of the memory files that Bluestreak hadjust finished archiving queued themselves up again.
The peoplescreamed. The actors screamed,Bluestreak reminded himself. But they were making it look so real. They screamed, and they ran. The camera showed terrified faces looking behind them. Peoplestumbled, fell, and were left behind. The black cloud turned the daytime sky tonight, and rocks began to fall from above. A pillar fell, blocking the peoplefrom their escape route.
Thescreaming.
“Bluestreak?”Bumblebee’s voice sounded concerned. “Are you all right?”
“I…”Unable to move his optics from the screen, Bluestreak realized his engine wasrevving. The sound of buildings collapsing filled his audials as the volcaniceruption on the screen went on and on. His cables tightened up as if gettingready to move, but Bluestreak found that his motors weren’t responding to hiscommands to stand up. “I can’t…”
Thescreaming.
Flinchingat an explosion nearby, Bluestreak tried once more to stand up, but a block of rubblehad landed on his pede. Above him, a formation of Seekers roared past. “I can’tmove!” he yelled.
There was anotherexplosion, and he heard the screech of metal as the neighbouring buildingtoppled over. He looked up just as the wall collapsed on top of him, sendinghim into darkness and choking dust and smoke.
The smellof burnt metal and spilt energon assailed his receptors. One of his door wingswasn’t responding; it had likely been ripped off when he was buried. Painburned in his sensors where his wing had been.
He heardthe screams of the mechs that had been standing near him. They were all buried underthe same debris as he was.
Buried.Buried alive. Alone in the dark, in the heat, in the flame, in the smoke, inthe pain.
“Help me!”Bluestreak screamed, flailing his arms out, trying to free himself.
Even as hestruggled to draw in a vent of clean air, he felt hands on him. They weregentle but firm, smoothing down his arms and holding his hands. Then he heard avoice: clear, commanding, and kind. “Bluestreak. It’s all right. You’re safe.”
Cycling hisoptics, Bluestreak looked up at Prowl. The Praxian’s door wings were spread toshield the rest of the room from Bluestreak, or perhaps to hide Bluestreak fromthe others in the room. But they also served to bring Bluestreak’s focus to theSIC’s face. He held Bluestreak’s gaze as soon as he had it. “You’re safe,”Prowl repeated firmly.
His enginestill whining as it ran hot, ready to speed him away from the danger,Bluestreak drew in another vent of air. It was clean, and cool. His door wingsdidn’t hurt, except for a slight strain in the hinge as they trembled. Hepulled his pedes in tight against the couch, and they moved freely.
Recoveryprotocols that had been installed by his therapist a millennia ago initiated assoon as he cycled his air vents again. The protocols gave him a location and adiagnostic. He was in the rec room, on the Ark. He was on Earth. He wasundamaged.
Slowly,Bluestreak nodded. “Y-yes, sir,” he stammered.
Prowl’sexpression softened slightly, from concern to relief. “Just Prowl is fine forright now. I’m off duty,” he said quietly.
“IsBluestreak ok? What happened?” Bluestreak saw Spike peering under Prowl’s doorwing, a worried frown on his face. “Why was he screaming? What did he say?”
Bumblebeegently pulled Spike back a bit. “Bluestreak just… had enough television fortoday, I think.”
“Bluestreakwill be fine, Spike,” Prowl said. “But I think he could do with spending alittle time someplace a bit quieter.” His voice lifted at the end of hisstatement, turning it into a question for Bluestreak.
Bluestreak’shelm jerked in a nod. “Yeah,” he said, and accepted Prowl’s hand to pull him upfrom the couch. He cast a wan smile at Spike. “Enjoy the rest of your show. Itlooked… really interesting,” he said. Then he walked out of the rec room,Prowl at his side. He hoped it didn’t look like he was running away.
As soon asthey got into the hallway, Bluestreak stopped and leaned against the wall.“Thanks, Prowl,” he muttered, letting his door wings fall. He still feltvaguely disoriented, as if another explosion could bury him again at anysecond. “How did you know –“
“Bumblebeecommed me as soon as he realized what was happening,” Prowl said. Tipping hishelm to the side, he asked, “What were you watching?”
“Adocumentary Spike wanted to watch for school, about Praxu- No, wait…” Bluestreaktried to dig the name of the city from his memory. “About a city calledPompeii.” He looked up at Prowl. “The images were… Well, I mean, it was justa reenactment, but it…” He shuddered when he recalled the sound of thescreams he had heard.
Prowl’soptics flickered slightly as he accessed the data net. “I see,” he said after amoment. He looped an arm around Bluestreak’s shoulders and tugged him into aslow walk towards his quarters. “Perhaps it would be a good idea to review somemore Earth history so that you can better identify triggers before youencounter them.”
Bluestreaknodded. “Yeah,” he said. “That sounds like a great idea. And until then, I’lljust stick to Knight Rider.”
I’m still taking prompts! Send me an ask with a prompt above and help me get a bingo! Note: I reserve the right to put off duplicates (I’ve already received one) and/or punt if a character you gave me isn’t one that I’m comfortable writing.
