Y/N walked into Armie’s office, stopping at the door. Cynthia stood there in Armie’s office, and they were laughing at something he had said. He sat back on the front of his desk, talking to her eye to eye. His smile was bright, and his eyes focused on her as she spoke.
As soon as Y/N walked into the room his attention shifted. “Y/N!” He greeted, his smile growing bigger. “Hey!”
“Hey, I didn’t mean to interrupt.” She walked in slowly. “I know I’m a little early.”
“If you’re not early, you’re late.”
“It’s okay. I was just leaving anyway,” Cynthia spoke. “I’ll talk to you later.” She touches his arm gently before walking out the office.
Y/N gave Cynthia a cordial smile as she walked past her on the way to her desk. Armie sat on the edge of his desk watching as Y/N unpacked her stuff behind her desk. He observes her quiet behavior and how she moves about her area.
“How was school?”
“Good.”
“Must not have been much traffic. You made it here faster than yesterday.”
“It was mostly clear.” She said, not looking up at him as she started going through the papers he’d left on her desk. “The bus was actually on time today, too.”
He watches her for another full minute and a half. “Hey, Y/N.”
“Yeah.”
“Come here.” She stops messing with the papers and looks up at him. “Come. Here.” He crooks his finger, signaling for her to go to him. Y/N stands and walks to him, stopping in front of him. “Are you jealous?”
“No.” She answers bluntly. “Just felt a little awkward, walking in on you flirting with someone. Not something I should-” He placed a hand on her cheek. “I mean, I wouldn’t want someone to stand there and watch me flirt.”
“Like you do with Chad?” He asked, pulling her closer by her shirt with his opposite hand.
“How do you know I flirt with Chad?!” She asked surprised, backing away a little.
“I see you.” He smiles at her. “Lingering in the copy room. Taking a little longer to get coffee.”
“So you’re flirting with her to get back at me?”
“No.” He shook his head. “It's a habit, to be honest.” He pulls her back to him. “It’s been a while since I entertained another woman.” He breathes over her lips. “I’m not looking to, either.” He licks over her lips. “I’m too busy enjoying what I have in front of me, while I have it.”
He touched their lips together, Y/N breathing in deep at the feeling. No matter how many times he’s kissed her, his scent, his presence was always intoxicating to her. He deepened the kiss, his tongue gently finding hers, tasting her at a slow pace. He made sure she felt it through her toes.
When he pulled away, he looked her dead in the eyes. “I know it's nothing serious and it's a casual, platonic thing. But I don't like to sleep around. Never did.” His thumb caresses her cheek. “Don't be naive enough to mistake my kindness for flirtation. You know the difference.” His eyes are boring in her as he speaks. “Got it?” She nods her head lightly between his hands. “Good. Now get to work.” He runs a thumb over her bottom lip. “You have a pretty big stack of papers waiting for you.” He backs away, dropping his hands, returning behind his desk.
She watched him for a long moment before returning to her own desk, grabbing the papers she was going through and continuing her task. They worked in a comfortable silence for about thirty minutes when she spoke, not looking up from her papers.
“I wasn’t really flirting, you know.”
Armie’s eyes looked towards her, “What?’
“You said I was flirting with Chad. I wasn’t. Not really.”
He shook his head as he flipped a paper over, moving on to the next. “You can flirt with whomever you’d like. It’s not my place to tell you what you can and cannot do. I’ve told you that.”
“Then why do you look at Chad like you want to throat punch him?”
“I do not!” He said more enthusiastically than he thought he would.
“Yes, you do!” She looked at him. “He asked why are you protective of me because you told him to “not even try it”.”
“Okay, that’s not what I said.” Armie drops his pen on his desk. “I told him don't try to play with you. That I had my eye on him.”
“If it’s not your place then why say that?”
“Okay, fine!” He rubbed his temples. “I’m protective over you.”
“You said-”
“I know what I said!” He stood from his desk.
She stood walking over to him. “How are you going to stand there and-”
“Lower your damn voice!” He tells her in a hushed tone.
“Don’t tell me what to do!” She puts her finger in his chest. “I can take care of myself!
“I’m not gonna apologize for protecting you!”
“Protect me from what, Armie?!”
“From men like that! God, you’re so stubborn!” He waves a hand in annoyance. “You trust me, right?” He lowers his voice. “If you trust me to fuck you then you should trust me to read a guy that just wants in your damn pants. You are way too good for him. He is a player and from the conversations I overheard, A bit of a dick. So, no, I won’t apologize for watching over you.” Armie turned, sitting back behind his desk, flipping through his papers much more harshly than needed.
A quiet moment goes by. “I know he is a dick.” She says out of the silence.
“What?” Armie looked up at her, still annoyed.
“You forget, I talk to Sarah and get the office 411.” She walked over to his desk, leaning next to where he sat. “I know he has a reputation.”
“Then why are you entertaining him?”
She shrugs. “It’s nice to have guys think you’re attractive.” He was taken aback by her response. “I’m not like you, okay. I don’t have people drooling over me when I walk into a room. I’m not often the one that catches the eye of a boy.”
“Bullshit!” Armie says bluntly. “You don’t realize how often you get checked out. How many times have I had to give a death stare to someone, not just in this office, but when we are out together.” He shakes his head. “And let's not forget how attractive I find you. How easily I accepted your ploy to get me in bed.”
“Armie-”
“You are so special and you don’t even realize it.” He places his hand on her cheek. “Why do you think I want to enjoy you while I can? I’m not stupid. I know when you leave this is over. And it won’t take long for some little college boy to swoop in and make you fall head over heels, as you should.”
“I told you I made the right choice for this.” She smirked into his lips.
“Yeah, yeah.” He mumbled, pressing his lips on hers.
~~~
Armie sat with Y/N’s parents and a handful of other friends and family in the stadium. It was a beautiful southern California spring day. Throughout all the speeches and recognitions all he did was keep his eyes on Y/N. He was so proud of her.
When the principal called her name and she walked across the stage Armie cheered just as loud, if not louder, than her parents. She laughed, knowing that voice out of the crowd. Her eyes found his as they shared a silent moment of fondness and understanding of what they had. She knew how proud he was and he knew her appreciation. Honestly, him helping her came secondary to them fooling around but it was still welcomed. It was just another reason for them to be together. Another excuse to be close and be in one another’s presence.
After the ceremony Armie joined the family and a nice restaurant and made small talk as they ate and bragged about Y/N and her accomplishments. Armie was quick to brag on how well she was doing at her internship, and the summer hadn’t even started yet.
After dinner Y/N went out to post graduation parties with her friends. It was the last time they would party as high schoolers.
At 2 am Armie was woken up out of a dead sleep when his phone started ringing next to his bed. Squinting into the bright light from his screen says PRETTY GIRL in bold letters.
“Hello?”
“Hey, Arms.”
“Are you okay?” Was the first thing that came from his mouth as he sat up in bed at the sound of her voice.
“Uh, yeah.” She giggled into the phone.
“Are you sure? You don’t sound alright.’
“I’m- I’m a little, a lot drunk.”
“Send me your location, I'll be there ASAP.”
“Okay.” She said into her phone.
“Stay put, I’m on my way.”
Her location was sent right after the phone disconnected. Armie drove across the city in less than half the time. He pulled up to the house and saw dozens of teenagers drinking and having a good time. He walked into the house ignoring all of the other people, eyes scanning for Y/N.
He sees her sitting on the stairs, her friend leaning on her shoulder. “Y/N.”
“Armie!” She jumps up, hugging him.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine. I just drank way too much!” She said loudly. “The guy we came here with was wasted! You told me not to get in the car with a drunk person. And you told me not to drive if I was drunk. I wasn’t gonna call my parents and get a lecture. So, the only other person is you. You told me to call you. So, I called you.”
“I did. I’m glad you called.” He put his hands on either side of her face. ‘You can always call me.”
“Can you bring my friend home?” She asked with a scrunched face.
“Yeah.” He smiled. “I can.” He took her hand. “Come on.” Armie helped her friend into the back seat of his car, then helped her into the passenger seat. “Don’t puke in my car.” He looked back and Y/N giggled.
After several minutes of Y/N playing with the radio she and her friend began singing loudly to some Harry Styles song on the radio. Although smiling, Armie rolled his eyes at how much she loved to listen to this type of music.
Y/N and her friend drunkenly directed him into the correct neighborhood.
“This house?” Armie pointed.
“That’s the one.” Y/N smiled.
“Okay, you stay here, I’ll walk her to the front door.”
Armie helped her friend from the back of the car and made sure she got into her house okay before getting back into his car. Y/N looked at him with a dreamy smile on her face. “So chivalrous.” She giggled.
“Come on. Let's get you home.”
“No!” She shouted, making him jump. “I want to go to your house!”
“You what?” He laughed.
“My parents think I’m at a friend’s house for the night anyway. They won’t miss me.”
“So, your dad won’t call at 5 am freaking out again?”
“Nope.” She shook her head and smiled.
“Fine.” He shook his head, putting the car in drive. “But no fooling around. Not while you're drunk.”
“Okay.” Can I just, she reaches, taking his arm, placing it across her and laying her head on his shoulder. “You're comfortable.”
Armie chuckled as he drove the forty minutes back to his place. When he pulled into his drive she woke up and looked around with a confused look on her face.
“Are you okay?”
“We're at your place already?”
“Already? We drove almost an hour, babe. Come on, let’s get you inside.” He walked around helping her out of the car. “Can you walk or would you rather me carry you?”
“I can walk.” She stumbled forward.
“Whoa!” He grabbed her waist.
“I'm- I'm okay.” She steadied herself. “Just-” She pulled him toward her. “Let me hold on to you.”
“Come on.” He scooped her up effortlessly and carried her into the house bridal style.
He went straight to the bedroom and laid her down gently on the bed before pulling her shoes off. He pulled the sheets over her and left her to sleep, crawling in beside her.
The next morning a buzzing sound woke Armie up. He looked at the clock and saw 7:45 am. He grabbed his phone but saw nothing on the screen. Following the buzzing he found Y/N's phone on the floor in her jacket where he had tossed it. He dug in her pocket and looked at the screen.
“Y/N.” Armie shook her gently. “Y/N, your parents are calling you.”
She grumbled and wiped at her eyes. “What?”
“Your dad is blowing up your phone.”
She sat up rubbing her eyes, Taking the phone from Armie. “Hello?”
“Y/N, where the hell are you?!” Her dad's voice sounded. “Your friend called this morning asking if you made it home safe! You were supposed to be at her house!”
“Whoa, whoa, dad, calm down. I'm with Armie.” The moment she said that his eyes grew huge.
“What?!”
“Everyone was drunk. I didn't want to get in the car with a drunk driver. He told me if I ever needed anything to call. He picked me up.”
“And you went to his house?!”
“I didn't want to wake you and mom at two in the morning! The dogs would have started barking and the whole neighborhood would have been awake. He brought me to his place. I crashed in the guest room.”
“Y/N, you can't do these things!”
“Would you have rather me stayed at a party with wasted teens or drive home with someone who had been drinking?”
“No-”
“I thought I was doing the responsible thing by getting a sober driver.”
“You did honey-”
You said I could trust him, so I did. He was very polite and even drove my friend home, who was drunk, mind you. Walked her to the door and made sure she was inside.”
“Well, that was kind of him.” Her father's voice softened. “I'm safe, dad. He told me he would drop me off later. Unless you want me to catch the bus now. I can leave him a note-”
“No, no. That's fine. After he wakes is fine.”
“I didn't mean to worry you. I'm sorry.”
“As long as you're safe.”
“See you in a few hours.”
“See you later sweet pea.”
She hung up the phone and Arm.ie looked at her. “You are a very good liar, sweet pea.”
“Ugh, shut up!” She let herself fall back against his pillows.
“Hungover?”
“I need to wash the ick off of me.”
“You know where the bathroom is, clothes and your toothbrush.”
“Please tell me you have something for an upset stomach?” She whined.
“Yeah, in the kitchen. Go clean up. You smell like weed.”
“I didn't smoke but everyone else did.” She told him, pulling herself out of the bed.
After a long hot shower and scrubbing her teeth, she slipped into one of Armie t-shirts and made her way to the kitchen. Armie handed her some liquid meds and a cup of coffee.
“I'd offer you breakfast but I feel like you'd just throw it up.”
“I would.” She grimaced. “Even the coffee is pushing it.”
“What the hell did you drink?”
“Tequila. Lots of tequila.” She shook her head at the thought. “And something pink.”
“Something pink?” He chuckled. “Sip the coffee. It'll help the headache.” He handed her two pills. “So will this.”
“Thanks.” She throws them back. She looks up at him as he sits on his couch, coffee in one his phone in the other. “Thank you, by the way.” He looked up at her. “For driving across the city to get me. At 2 am.” He places his phone and cup down on the table in front of the couch. “And letting me come here. And for dropping my friend off.” He grabs her cup from her hands, placing it on. The little table. “What are you-”
“Shut up.” He presses his lips to her, shutting her up.
He pulls away and she is dumbfounded. “What- why'd you do that?”
“I told you, you could trust me and to call anytime. So, stop thanking me. I'm more than happy to do it.” He presses another kiss to her lips. “You're cute when you're drunk, by the way.”
“Shut up!” She playfully pushes him away.
“You are!” He pulls her closer. “You are all giggly and playful. You cuddle even more, which I did not think was possible.”
“I’ve never gotten that drunk before.” She nestled herself into his side. His arm around her, her head on his shoulder.
“You were celebrating. It’s okay.”
“Thank you. Again.” She looks up at him. “For picking me up and being there.”
“Hey,” He places his hand on her face. “It’s okay. I’m here whenever you need.” He kisses her lips gently.
!!!! This !!!!!
I don’t think non-book Dune fans realize how much of a “coming of age” that the movie and book are. Not only are we watching Paul grow up to be a messiah and assume godhood, but we’re watching a teenager transform into a premature man, stripped of his innocence.
He knows things he shouldn’t know, and he’s thrown into a role that he shouldn’t be engaged with. A role forced upon him by puppet masters planets away, and by his own mother whose only fault was loving her Duke.
