Whatever you do don't think about lance being flung out into space with a small gold locket he religiously wears that holds the smallest family photos
The locket matches the ones every McClain gets when they join the family
Oval with a center starburst pattern on a delicate but sturdy chain
It shines so bright in any light just like a star and on the back each locket has a family nickname etched into the gold
Lances says "little star" and he'll run his fingers across the engraving when stressed to remind him of home
Through the years of war that same engraving starts to rub off with all his nervous touching
Pidge offers to fix it but he can't bring himself to do so
Not yet
Not when the engraving done by his dad still lingers, not when it's in his hand writing, not when it reminds him of his proud smile
Lance will hold that locket and wonder what his family would think of him now
Of what he's done
Of what he's had to become
And in moments where he thinks "this is it" and he's bleeding out on the floor he'll use all his strength to get one last look for the pictures inside
Lance will try his best to keep the blood from smearing on their happy faces
He'll gift them one last smile before he loses the battle to stay conscious
& Everytime when he wakes up that same blood will be carefully cleaned off their image and the locket placed cozily In a velvet box waiting for lance to put it back on
The team will handle it so softly every time one of them finds it in lances hands after battle, Keith is usually the one to place it somewhere safe

Favourite ship and least favourite ship?
Gravity Falls wise…
My favorite, unfortunately, would be Billdip.
I love both redemption fics and and psychological horror fics. The fact that one ship can do both either at the same time or go completely dif routes I think it pretty interesting/fun. I’m a freakin sucker for demon gone human shiz, then trying to cope (Some Devil’s a part-timer mood). And then enemies to lover’s is *Le chef’s kiss*
Least fav (besides the other rancid ships you can find in this fandom, like seriously wtf) is Dipcifica.
It’s not even because of billdip, I just, idk I always see them as close friends that shit on each other. Though, I’m grown enough to admit that they do have their cannon moments, I’m just not a fan. Also like Mabel and Pacifica! Those girls are perfect. If you’re gonna have a redemption arc (which is gonna have to happen anyway because it’s Pacifica and she’s also horrible) with her and a twin it should be Mabes! They shared a backseat, post-golf battle burrito! Like how you gonna do my girl like that 😭 Is it that I’m incapable of shipping straights?! Maybe?!
But if we’re talking about my fav ship of all time…
It’s Bubbline!
I know its Cannon so some people don’t count it as a ship but like, I grew up with them, even more so then Gravity Falls. I think young-ass me even knew there was something fruity afoot. This was like, before they came out and said it too, only subtle hints. So I kinda shipped them as a little kid (even though shipping wasn’t a popular term and I didn’t really know about gay people, weird right?). It was nice to grow up with them see the changes that allowed their story to finally be cannon.
But confession, even though I write a fanfic and do a lot of ship fanart. Im like… not a huge shipper? I mean, I am, but also like, I usually just do art for Gravity Falls, same with reading fics. I used to read Klance fics with my friend back in highschool, but Klance and Billdip are the extent of my fic library. I guess I’m just goofy like that.
Also fuck Voltron, that show could have been so great. It was good in some aspects but like… looking back on it I’m soooooo bitter 😂 but I can’t get into that.
EDIT: I also meant to say, though I don’t ship it, I appreciate Billford. I’m more of a Ford x McGucket fan myself, but Ford and Bill were fruity with each other and that’s a rock fact you can take to the bank! I don’t ship Billford, because (unless changing the outcome of the entire show) we know how that story ends, so there’s not a lot of room for fluff. When it comes to Bill and ships, I like future redemption ones the best, so therefore we have Dipper instead of Ford.

The Smell of Juniberries
(A Klance Commission for @aquacanis).
Under a cut for length, set about two years post season 8. Yeeeee.
~~
Juniberries smelled like how cranberries tasted – tart, pungent, with hints of sweetness that paired well with almost any other smell they came into contact with. They were wonderful for bouquets, if one knew what they were doing, and after nearly two years of working with them, Lance was very confident in his ability to make floral arrangements.
“You just about done here? I need help with the sound equipment,” Pidge piped from his shoulder.
Lance let his hands fall from the flowers, studying them with a critical gaze for one last moment before twisting to the gremlin at his side. She’d shot up nearly four inches since the end of the war, perfect arm rest height, and Lance used this to his advantage now, leaning on her shoulder. “Can’t get Hunk to do it?”
Pidge rolled her eyes, glasses reflecting the early afternoon light of the open-aired pavilion as she nodded over to Hunk and Shay. “They’re working on lighting and the dessert table. Ask me, they’re just flirting incessantly.”
Lance smothered his grin and nodded, letting a chuckle slip loose. “Yeah, yeah, I’ll be over in a minute, Pidgeon. I’ve got two pieces left.”
She gave him a two fingered salute and then walked back to the DJ booth, adjusting her suit as she moved. Lance took the second of reprieve to straighten out his own suit, a dark jacket over a soft, baby blue button down with a pink bowtie. His eyes perused the pavilion, lips quirking at the sight of Hunk and Shay laughing, at Coran and Iverson (THAT had been a surprise, but was admittedly adorable) bickering on how to hang the black and white streamers across the room.
“Need some help?”
“Quiznak!” Lance hissed, nearly elbowing Keith in the throat as he whipped around. “Don’t do that to a guy, Kogane!”
Keith’s smile was genuine, a hint of mirth in his eyes. “Sorry,” he said, though he didn’t sound it.
Lance huffed a breath and attempted to compose himself while simultaneously giving Keith a once over. He was the best man, dark suit jacket and maroon colored button down. The bow tie at his neck was pink, like Lance’s, though a different shade, more suited to match the color of his shirt. His pants were form fitting, flaring just slightly at the shoes, and Lance caught himself staring just a little too long at his thighs. He shot his eyes back up, but Keith hadn’t seemed to notice. “You good?”
Keith pulled his gaze back from where he’d been studying the room. “Yeah. Yeah, just can’t…can’t quite wrap my head around it.”
Lance nudged into him gently, smiling in the hopes of easing his nerves. “Hey. He’s basically your brother. It makes sense you’re nervous.”
Keith snorted, a small sound, but one that sent Lance back years. “I shouldn’t be. Obviously he can handle himself, and Curtis is amazing. It’s just…I spent so long worrying about him and trying to…I don’t know.”
His brows were furrowed now, and Lance let him sit for a moment in silence. Took the time to collect his own thoughts.
For two years, he’d been working on the family farm. Integrating juniberries into Earth’s atmosphere had been shockingly easy, though it wasn’t that much of a surprise, given how similar the atmosphere of Altea was to Earth. Since the war, they had been the most coveted type of flower, worth hundreds, and Lance was determined to make sure people knew about them, their history, about the woman who had made their existence once again possible.
Lance pressed his lips together and glanced around.
She was here, in subtle ways. The pink of the bow ties, at Shiro’s insistence. The juniberries in everyone’s lapels. The scattered pictures on the tables, dozens featuring goofy selfies and group photos that mostly Lance and Pidge had forced everyone into. He was glad they had done it, now.
She was there in the way Coran’s gaze lingered too long on the juniberries, in the way Iverson’s hand slipped over his shoulder and squeezed, reassuring. In the way Pidge paused at the DJ booth, eyes shut, fingers clamped around the headphones over her ears, murmuring words in Altean rather than English. The way Hunk’s fingers shook over the pastries on the table, juniberry shaped and infused cookies and cupcakes, Shay’s hands quelling the trembling.
She was there when Lance turned, to reassure Keith, the halo of light that circled his body as he looked back to Lance, a crooked, anxious smile on his face.
He knew that she would tell him to go for it. That she’d want him to be happy. It scared him to the depths of the oceans, but he knew she’d encourage it. This feeling he’d had, for far too long.
“Lance?”
He shook his head, shoving his hands in his pockets to keep him from doing something stupid. “Yeah, sorry?”
Keith’s head tilted. His hair was pulled back in a ponytail, wisps of escaped pieces dusting his forehead. “Are you okay?”
Lance countered it. “Are you?”
Keith’s lips pressed into a line, thin, looked away. “I…”
Curtis’ mother came flying into the room from the adjacent church, clapping her hands. “Chop chop everyone, let’s go! Five minutes until we need to be in places!”
Before he could lose his nerve, Lance settled his hand on Keith’s shoulder and squeezed. “Later. Help me with these arrangements.”
They ended up a little sloppier than the rest, but Lance couldn’t bring himself to care.
~~
The summer after the war, a year after the end of the Galra empire, found Lance kneeling in the dirt outside his house, hands muddy from fixing the fallen juniberries. There had been a storm the night before. It had taken out trees, bushes, roses, the like. Juniberries had never been exposed to rain until they were planted on Earth. They did well in it, as one could expect, but they were delicate. Couldn’t take a lot.
They had fallen, wilted, were on the verge of dying.
Lance couldn’t see. His vision was blurred, hands shaking too hard to move any of the flowers properly. His family was asleep - it was early. The sun was barely on the horizon.
It felt cruel. Like the universe was playing a horrible, nasty joke on him. “Here’s this plant that reminds you of your dead girlfriend! Lol time to kill it.” What kind of sick sense of humor did the universe have?
Hands closed over his. Slow. Meticulous. Uncaring of the mud and the dirt and the tears. Lance looked up to find Keith kneeling before him, still dressed in his Blade uniform. His knife was on his hip, a weird detail that set in Lance’s mind and never left. Behind him stood the others, in various forms of dress, all of them looking tired and sad.
He looked back to Keith, drowned in the depths of his gaze. When he opened his mouth, Lance found himself focusing on the way his lips moved, caught himself, very briefly, wondering what they felt like.
“How can we help?”
They spent the day cleaning, restoring, throwing mud and just laughing. It was the first time since her death that Lance had felt truly at peace. At the end of the day, they’d joined Veronica and the kids for lemonade on the porch and surveyed the saved fields.
Keith’s arm had draped around Lance’s shoulders, Blade Uniform replaced with one of Marco’s old college t-shirts. A friendly hug. The weight still registered in Lance’s head. He still didn’t know how they had known to come. “I’m sorry we couldn’t save all of them.”
A glance to the left, at the wheelbarrow of unsalvageable juniberries, and then back to the right, at Keith. The others, behind him. He knew, then. Felt his cheeks burn, but he couldn’t tell if it was a blush or those damned marks. “We never could.”
The hug grew tighter.
~~
“I do.”
“You may now kiss the groom,” Coran announced, eyes twinkling and mustache quirked.
Lance whooped louder than almost anyone as Shiro and Curtis closed together, grinning through their kiss. Hunk grabbed him and Pidge up in a tight hug and Lance sank into it, smiling so widely that he knew his cheeks would ache in the morning.
A look to his left, Keith clapping politely but smiling like he’d just seen the sunrise for the first time. Lance nudged Hunk, jutted his head, and in seconds the man was being swept up along with them, yelping in surprise but laughing as soon as he knew what was happening.
The after party went long. Speeches read, by Keith, one of Curtis’ old friends from before the war that Lance didn’t know very well. One by Coran, that Shiro had requested, one that made the old man cry even as he read.
And then dancing.
Too many partners to count. He danced with Pidge, goofily, twice. Took it more seriously the second time before nudging her off to the woman she kept eyeing in the corner. Lance thought she might be related to Curtis, but wasn’t sure how. Danced with Hunk, mock slow-dancing, and then with Shay, sticking his tongue out at Hunk over her shoulder as she giggled. With Coran, a dramatic waltz that made them both crack up and laugh like children. Coran’s face was soft when he left, his eyes settled on Lance’s cheeks. Lance knew it hurt him to look, sometimes. He didn’t hold it against him.
Somewhere into the night, Shiro approached. “Dance with me.”
Lance took his human hand in surprise but let Shiro lead him out onto the floor. Curtis was dancing with his little sister’s niece, swinging her around the dance floor as she squealed in delight. “How do you feel?” Lance asked, glancing back at Shiro. He realized, with a start, that he was just a little taller than him now.
Shiro’s smile was soft, barely there, but so genuine it ached. “The same? But different. If that makes sense.”
Lance hummed. “It does.”
“I’m sorry.”
Lance lifted his eyebrows, looking at Shiro in confusion. “What for?”
Shiro shrugged, spinning a little until Lance could see Keith over his shoulder. “For putting so many elements of her into this. I just…wanted her to be here, you know?”
Lance locked eyes with the man and softened, squeezing Shiro’s shoulder tightly where his hand rested. “Hey. I do. It’s your day. Of course you wanted her here. We all did. And she was. Here, I mean.”
Shiro’s lips pressed into a thin line. “I know it must have been harder though. For you.”
Lance spluttered out a laugh, shaking his head. When he looked back up, Shiro was watching him. Not in surprise, or irritation, but just…watching. Gentle. “It’s okay,” Lance promised. “I miss her. Of course I do. We all do. But I…”
His eyes drifted again, falling on him, on the way Hunk was trying to teach him the wobble, of all fucking things. His hair was disheveled, suit jacket gone, top of his shirt unbuttoned. He was grinning, eyes sparkling.
Shiro spun so fast Lance barely registered the change in direction until he was watching Veronica and Nadia dancing on the opposite side of the room. Shiro’s lips curled into the most mischievous grin Lance had ever seen on the man. “Oh. OH. Lance.”
His cheeks were burning again, and he lowered his gaze. “I’m…”
“Do it.”
Lance looked up, somewhat embarrassed. “What?”
Shiro’s smile was softer, now, as he took in Lance’s anxiety. “Do it. He’ll say yes. I promise you that.”
He stepped back, pushed him gently in Keith and Hunk’s direction, hand lingering in Lance’s. Shiro squeezed, once. “I promise,” he whispered.
He walked away, then, stepping in and taking Curtis’ niece from him. Lance turned back to Keith and Hunk. Hunk was gone, helping Pidge with a technical issue. Keith was sitting alone, punch in hand.
He glanced up at the night sky, crystal clear and glittering with stars. “Allura, give me courage,” he muttered.
His marks burned as he walked.
Keith looked up when he approached, eyebrows raising, and Lance held out a hand, trying for a genuine, careful smile. “Would you like to dance?”
Keith studied him for a long moment, lips parting and eyes softening into something that Lance found magical. His hand settled in Lance’s with a tension that Lance could feel in his whole body. “I’d love to.”

klance is one of the best relationships in animation (imo)
i have yet to see a cartoon show that delivers an emotionally riveting and engaging romantic pairing that gets me feeling for the characters a lot. except, of course, keith and lance. probably gonna sound corny, but bear with me.
lotura was a well-developed relationship that i saw backing to, and they did it in a relatively short span of time. so i give kudos to the writers for building it up well. but usually when this kind of relationship that is sort of predictable happens (of course disregarding lotor's betrayl) in all these shows, i usually just think: "that's cute." but i'm not dedicated to it very much. they usually don't get me excited and entertained.
honestly out of all the animated films and tv series i've watched, usually the hetero ships happen in a short amount of time - kind of defeating the purpose of affecting the viewer much. it's almost like some writers have their hands shaking, desperate to just have a relationship to work on, that they're sloppy and rushed. that also ties into some peoples' view that you have to have romance to be happy - which is silly, because aromantic and asexual people exist. writers are often just... impatient to have characters get together, and i can say that because i'm a writer, and it's absolutely true. but to get a great relationship, you need to have good characters and a good arc for them.
like, a couple episodes in and they kiss - and ur just like - "oh. this is happening now i guess." it lacks emotional ties with the audience. but if you make it a slow and grueling romantic burn - the audience gets more and more drawn to it. in a lot of cases - that's one of the biggest reasons people watch the show, because, when done right, the romantic delivery is so satisfying to see.
lance and keith's relationship has started since season one, which is a pretty huge leap from LOK where korrasami sort of just,, happens. of course there were limitations on the network, but the buildup was relatively minimal. when i watched it, i was in a state of disbelief and excitement to see two women romantically coded on animated television. that was more of a shock factor for me other than dedication to seeing them pair up. i was happy there was rep, but that was about it. the characters weren't as lovable and complex as i thought they'd be - which is something voltron is succeeding in: having amazing characters.
klance has a huge amount of evidence stacked up, going all the way back to s1. i think the writers pre planned this much better - and in interviews they've stated that writing whole seasons in chunks is easier than going episode by episode like korra. so they've definitely had this in mind since early seasons. another reason they have so much freedom when it comes to romantically coded m/m scenes is because they're on netflix. netflix isn't really a "big bad" of the lgbt community. they have lots of great lgbt shows avaliable.
klance is a slow burn. by the end of the show, we'll have gone 70-80ish episodes total. that's a lot of time to have hetero ships put together. that's a long time for a hetero slow burn, but none were directly present at the beginning. but we did get m/m romantically coded scenes. the fact that lance and keith got one of the most romantic scenes of the first season and it wasn't straight baffles me. it will blow my mind if klance is the only confirmed endgame relationship by the finale of the show - it would be a huge step for representation.
their relationship has been the spotlight for me, something that keeps me tied to the show. it's what the writers do with the characters - how they interact - that is so enjoyable to watch. lance and keith have a lovable relationship, there's no denying that for me. a large part of their characters is the struggle for finding love.
for lance : love/appreciation from his teammates; romantic love. for keith: parental love, brotherly love, and finally - romance. he is one of the more focused-on main characters, as he was in the original shows. so ending him with a relationship would be the cherry on top for the finale. it would also tie into the hints why keith was so strung up on the bonding moment - where he might have developed a crush on lance. there's a lot more evidence for pining keith in early seasons than people give credit for - another thing i love about voltron. it's complex; it has layers to be pulled back. the characters are believable and realistic. and mostly, i love theorizing.
romance in voltron isn't as flexible as it was in korra - where you had no idea by the end of the show really who was ending up with who. of course there were hints, but you could never know for sure. voltron ain't like that. again, since it was planned out in chunks and as a whole, the show flows much better - rather than last minute whims of the writers in weekly tv series. that's why i'm so confident in klance. it was planned out early and clearly.
lance and keith's relationship really keeps the viewers guessing. you have no idea what's going to kick off an interaction. maybe an argument, maybe a confession - but it's so hard to tell how their characters will interact because, well... they're both relatively confused too. they don't know how to act around each other, and that's incredibly entertaining. honestly, i think that's why a lot of fanfiction fails to capture their characters well because of how complex they are.
you never know when something like "i think he's, like, the future" is going to pop out at you. years ago, i would have said that line sounded ooc. but now, it's not.
i didn't know if dw would take the leap, but the amount of foreshadowing interactions of lance and keith in s7 lead me to strengthen my belief that they are voltron's main slowburn.
so basically: if klance happens (and i'm confident it will), it's going to be one of the best romantic buildups i've seen in a cartoon. i'm not just saying this because they're a m/m ship (even though i definitely do want solid representation), i love the ship because of everything subtle - and not subtle you can see in it. to the blatantly obvious bonding moment scene where they hold hands and stare at each other smiling softly in purple lighting, to just a small frame of keith looking disgruntled as lance flirts with allura. the list goes on, and on, and on.
many shows with lgbt characters can fail in making the relationship memorable - sadly, they can just be added as an afterthought only so the creators can take the credit for having "representation."
klance is one of my all-time favorite ships because of how well planned and memorable it is. it's the fact that i can say i love the characters and relationship not soley because of the rep, but because it's a genuinely great story.

So I recently rewatched Voltron s1e01 - The Rise of Voltron to compile screenshots of my favorite Lances of that episode, as I believe that episode animated him BEAUTIFULLY while the rest of the series tends to make him more off-model than any other character (don't deny it, you know it in your heart it's true).
Anyway, while doing that, I made a few... observations. As per the usual with pilot episodes, a lot was packed into this episode. Some of it probably seemed pretty throw-away, early season stuff that won't really make reappearances in the future. However, I am seeing some stuff that actually DID reappear -- sometimes late in the series. I am referring to these as planted seeds; these seeds were planted in the very first episode, but some of them are just late bloomers.
So I have decided to make a meta about this. I want to point out the different seeds that were planted in this episode and when they actually bloom later in the series. Keep in mind that some of these are very obvious and stuff that everyone knows, but I feel they should be here for reasons I'll explain later (and just to have these seeds in a nice compilation).
DISCLAIMER:
I have nothing against ANY ship. While I don't ship many things myself in this show, I'm not against the ships people have for this show, regardless of what those ships are. That said, my confidence in the endgame ship is Klance, and as such, other Lance- and Keith-related ships may not be shown in the best light in this post as one of the points I make in this meta is WHY I believe Klance will be endgame. I will not use the full ship names other than Klance so that this post will stay out of the tags of those ships. THAT said, know that I do not find the ships I'm trying to disprove unhealthy, wrong, or bad in any way, I just don't believe they'll be endgame. Please go into this with an open mind.
All that said, let's get this show on the road!
I am starting with the most obvious and well-known seed:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, we all know about this one. Pidge being iffy about the Kerberos mission, eventually revealing to Shiro that the two people who accompanied him on the Kerberos mission were her father and brother, showing us that she desires ro find them in space. We all know this, the show has beaten us over the head with her arc repeatedly. Still, this seed was planted in this first episode and so it warrants mentioning. It's also noteworthy that this seed did not fully bloom until season 7 -- one season away from the finale season. This is important, but I will get to it later.
Onto the next one!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another obvious seed. Allura's insecurities as well as her expectations of herself and the Voltron crew to carry her father's legacy. This seed is still growing and got a lot of focus in seasons 5 and 6, where it bloomed the most. This is a seed that I don't think CAN blossom until the series is complete, though, as bringing peace to the universe is how Allura and Voltron can fulfill her father's legacy. Not much to say here, just posting it for prosperity's sake and to show that, like most of the seeds on this list, this seed did not/will not fully blossom until the very end as well as the fact that it's something we see throughout the show and does not get ignored.
As for this next one:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hesitated to add this one because it is a bit of a reach. After deliberating, I decided it was worth adding in.
So Allura was integral in Pidge's season 1 arc regarding Pidge's identity. I've noticed that Pidge seems to be reciprocating come season 7 -- Allura helped Pidge by trying to get her to admit to her true self but also keeping it a secret and letting Pidge be to one to reveal it, and now Pidge is Allura's MVP in getting back the castleship.
Allura is impressed by Pidge in this scene. This is actually Allura's first impression of Pidge, as Pidge didn't say much before now. And her first impression of her is that Pidge is extremely intelligent and has a mind that can be relied on. I think it's possible this is a seed that is sprouting now in season 7, when Allura is relying on the intellect of Pidge and Pidge's family get back a piece of Alfor's legacy -- the Castle of Lions. Allura even eluded to this in The Feud, when she chose Pidge to leave the game show and said it was because Pidge and her family have the best chance of finishing what Alfor started. And that started right here in this scene, I think.
So, next seed:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a small seed, and an unexpected one. I've always viewed Iverson as a jerk and thought this scene no different. Fresh off the heels of season 7, I rewatch this scene and realize how... honestly concerned Iverson sounds. He doesn't sound angry or too business-like or gruff, he sounds concerned and confused and seems to actually have Shiro's well-being in mind when he requests they put Shiro under. His voice, especially when compared to how he spoke to the Garrison Trio, is softer and hints that he really isn't as bad a guy as we've all pegged him to be. Come season 7 and we see how right that actually is. He ISN'T a bad guy; he's a strict guy, yes, but he has everyone's best interests at heart and honestly feels gutted when that entire crew is wiped out.
I know that was a small seed, but it still counts. Next seed, ahoy:
Tumblr media
This explains a lot regarding Allura's connections to the lions, but we don't really see the fruits of this until season 6. In season 6, Allura was able to use her powers from Oriande to take Shiro's soul from the Black Lion's consciousness and place it into Clone Shiro's body. Yes, she has powers from Oriande -- that's how she was able to mess with Shiro's soul like that -- but it was her connection to the lions that allowed her to connect to Black Lion's consciousness in the first place. Oriande didn't do that -- Alfor did, and this scene proves it.
This next seed is... wow:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one caught me by surprise because holy crap how did I miss this???
Okay, so I made a post talking about that Lauren Montgomery art and how it's playing into the show in unexpected ways. Please go read that to understand this to the fullest extent.
This scene? This scene foreshadows Lance's inclusion in Shiro's arc. Shiro offers a hand -- his Galra hand -- to Lance for shaking (Lance being the only person in the room aside from Keith whose name he knew). Lance looks at the arm trepidatiously for a split second before smiling and reciprocating the handshake.
This moment is focused on for a reason and I can't believe I missed it. Because isn't it interesting that Shiro offers his GALRA arm despite it being a symbol of his trauma and not something he'd be eager to flaunt? Isn't it interesting that the episode puts so much focus on his handshake with LANCE, but his handshake with Pidge is barely given any thought?
It IS interesting, and here's why.
Lance was much more important to Shiro's arc than we thought. While Keith brought Clone Shiro to an end, and Allura brought the real Shiro back to life, Lance was the support he needed. Clone Shiro wasn't doing so well. I mean, he's a Galra-created clone being controled by Haggar, of course he's not doing well. The ones who suffered the most from this were Allura and Lance. Allura stood up for herself and refused to be pushed around and sometimes managed to get her way. Lance, however, respected Shiro too much to do more than try and keep the peace. He didn't stand up for himself, didn't call Shiro out on his bullcrap, just tried to keep him calm and keep the peace among the team. It's no wonder that Lance is the one Clone Shiro goes to about how he's actually feeling. And what does Lance do? He supports him. Comforts him. Promises him they'll figure it out together. He's worried at first, much like how he showed worry before accepting Shiro's hand in s1e01, but he ultimately puts that aside and accepts Shiro.
This scene was the planted seed. It was subtle, so subtle I completely missed it, but here it is. And it took a while to bloom, BOY did it take a while! Took until season 5 before we got to see it blossom. But it did and Lance was the support Clone Shiro needed to stay sane until Keith could come in and fix the situation.
Speaking of Lance:
Tumblr media
This seed came to fruition in season 3 -- it was definitely foreshadowing. Most of the other paladins get are shown alone when shown their lions. There are two exceptions to that (one of which I will get to later).
This seed is the first exception. Lance and Keith are both shown with the Red Lion here, rather than Keith alone. Come season 3, Lance becomes the Red Lion's new pilot.
With this next seed:
Tumblr media
This was planted in this first episode and didn't really see the light for day for AGES. We were told from the very beginning that Hunk is the one who is meant to help keep the team together, but we don't actually see that happen.
Until season 7.
Hunk's arc in season 7 seems like it came out of nowhere (his family arc kinda did), but it was foreshadowed from the very beginning. There was always going to come a time when the team seemed like it was falling apart and it'd be up to Hunk to keep them together. And in season 7, that's EXACTLY what happened. This seed actually sprouted in season 6, when Hunk got their Galra allies to stop arguing during a crucial moment. It stagnated then, until season 7 came along and this seed finally bloomed in full.
I love this next seed:

This seed is one of my favorites, because the principle of its existence helps prove a point I will make later in this post.
It's Leifsdotter! This is a seed that didn't begin blooming until season 7. I know, the showrunners could have just needed a design for an mfe pilot and pulled hers out of the episode, but there are two things that make me disagree with that notion:
1. Her design is so much more... detailed and not standard-background-character-ish than the rest of the students in that scene. She's not the focus of the scene and doesn't even speak, yet her design makes her stand out. The showrunners WANT us to see her.
2. Hers is the only mfe pilot design pulled from that episode. That group had multiple different character designs and all of them could have easily suited the mfe pilots. But the showrunners didn't do that, which makes me think this was very deliberate and planned out.
I will be getting to these points soon.
Now for the seeds that have been growing throughout the series but have not reached full bloom. First off, we have...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, this one is super subtle. Shiro actually has had a hand in Lance's romance arc since this first episode. We have a very tiny hint of Shiro's sexuality with this shot:
Tumblr media
Color theory is often used in media to portray subtle clues to the audience about something happening in the background or as foreshadowing. This scene is the latter; it foreshadows Shiro's arc by using a rainbow in the background, right above his head, and the lemur-sloth-thing that's guiding them blocks the rainbow off from extending to Pidge as well, keeping the rainbow strictly to Shiro. So we had a subtle hint in this very first episode about Shiro's sexuality.
And I think that alludes to the expectation we all have of Shiro helping Lance with a sexuality arc. It makes sense, and it's interesting seeing that Shiro has kinda of been involved in Lance's romantic arc this whole time! Right from the first episode!
We see it continue throughout the series; the people that are most annoyed with Lance's flirtations are Shiro, Keith (who isn't really verbal about it but almost always looks disgruntled), and Allura (who is often on the receiving end of said flirtations). Shiro interrupts flirtations on multiple occasions and has shown a lot of annoyance with it.
This... kind of continues in season 7 with the reveal of Shiro being gay. He doesn't have much interaction with Lance, but I think his sexuality being revealed here (however... too subtle it may have been) is paving the way for the climax of Lance's romance arc in season 8.
The next seed is not nearly as subtle:
Tumblr media
Black Paladin Lance! This is the second exception to the paladins + their lions scene I mentioned earlier.
I know a lot of people lost hope in this, but not me. There has been way too much set up for this, and as I will talk about soon, almost everything that has been set up has come to fruition.
So let’s look at this scene.
The Green and Yellow Lions have scenes with their paladins alone -- no other paladin is in the shot. For the Red Lion, both Keith and Lance are in the shot, which foreshadowed Lance eventually taking over the Red Lion -- which happened in season 3. Then we have the Black Lion. Three people are in that shot -- Shiro, Keith, and Lance. Shiro is, of course, the original Black Paladin. Keith took the helm in season 3 and then again in season 6 - present. So this shot foreshadows that. This leaves Lance.
I want to point out how this shot is set up. Shiro is the largest, which makes sense as he was the Black Paladin for the longest -- seasons 1, 2, 4, 5, and half of 6. Keith is the second largest. Again, this makes sense as he's been the Black Lion's pilot for seasons 3, half of 6, and all of 7. So he has been the pilot for the second longest. Lance being the smallest makes sense if he's only to be the Black Lion's pilot for a short while. So theory time!
I believe something will happen to Keith in season 8 -- he'll be captured or perhaps Honerva mind-controls him. The Black Lion then enlists Lance to be its pilot long enough to get Keith back, who will then take over as the Black Lion's pilot and Lance goes back to Red.
And it makes sense, considering how this shot is set up, for it to have taken this long for Lance to be the Black Lion's pilot. He's the smallest in the shot, smaller than Keith, and Keith had only just gotten back to piloting the Black Lion. With the way the series is set up, it wouldn't have made sense for Lance to pilot the Black Lion sooner; seasons 4 and 5 (keeping in mind that seasons 3 and 4 and seasons 5 and 6 were meant to be single seasons each and were split up last minute), while not featuring Lance -- although Lance has always been developing in the background, it's just slowly done and not at the forefront -- do show the changes he goes through in losing Keith to the Blade of Marmora. We see him become isolated, ignored, and any confidence he had built up being Keith's right-hand was shot. Season 6 was about resolving the overall problem of which Lance's issues were a side effect. Season 7, meanwhile, allows us to see Keith coming back into action with a clearer mind while also showing us how much he relies on Lance despite being a much better leader. You can see the difference in Lance's actions in the show between seasons 4 and 5 and seasons 6 and 7; in season 7 especially, he's much more in-action, plays a much bigger part, and shows how necessary he really is. This was all needed for Lance's arc -- getting rid of this flow (even if season 4 was not the best by any stretch of the means) would have weakened Lance's arc and made him less able to be the Black Lion's pilot.
Another point I want to bring up is the "following in his [Keith's] footsteps" thing. This is something that has also been a constant in the show -- not the phrase, but the action. Because Lance is ALWAYS following in Keith's footsteps. ALWAYS. He literally followed Keith's footsteps in this episode to save Shiro. The series shows how often he follows Keith -- they're constantly next to each other, Lance often wants Keith's glory, and in more serious points, he takes over Keith's lion, takes Keith's role as right-hand man to Shiro, gets a sword like Keith gets.
Quick diversion, on the subject of the sword, Lance has yet to use it despite having it for three seasons. In my opinion, this was to show us how alike he is to Keith and serves little purpose beyond that (perhaps will have a plot point sometime in season 8).
Back to the point, Lance has always followed Keith. "Don't follow in his footsteps," was something that was a focal point of the scene it was said in. It was that scene's finale line, a line that we were supposed to pay attention to and remember, and then the episode shows Lance disobeying that repeatedly and constantly following Keith's footsteps. This seed was planted -- a whole scene gave us focus of it being planted -- and it has slowly grown and blossomed over the course of the series. It hasn't fully bloomed yet, but season 7 did not ignore it like some might think. There was a bump in the road, but we saw him really slide into the role of right-hand man to Keith, showing himself reliable and actually being better as a right-hand than Keith was. He's followed in Keith's footsteps and, in some ways, has surpassed him. We also saw his relationship with the Red Lion and how similar it is to the relationship the Red Lion had with Keith. He's been following Keith's footsteps throughout the show and that hasn't stopped -- season 7 made sure to showcase that.
One last point I want to make is Lance's progression. His main issue in leading the team in this episode was his ego. Season 7 is such a huge jump because Keith leaves the team in Lance's hands and we see how responsible and logical Lance is in doing so, making keeping the team safe his number one priority and not even caring about the glory. When Keith put his, Pidge's, and Kosmo's lives in Lance's sniping hands, Lance had a chance to brag to his sister and the mfe sniper that was with them. He didn't. He explained what his gun does in a no-nonsense manner and left it at that. There was no ego, not talk of the glory he'd get for his skills, no showboating. He stayed on the task and his only concern was getting his job done right and keeping his teammates alive and safe. That seed was planted in the first episode -- that was his starting point, and much like his leadership seed, he has grown and bloomed into something much bigger and better than what he started out as.
And there's my point here: His leadership skills have grown. This seed is the seed of his leadership, and it has slowly grown as the show has gone on. It sprouted in season 3 and now season 7 is showing how beautifully it's blossoming. A seed planted in this episode didn't really start to blossom until the second-to-last season! As mentioned before, yes I will come back to that particular point soon (we're almost to the culmination of these "soons" and "laters", I promise).
I swear this next seed is important please bear with me:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know the A//urance in season 7 scared a lot of people off, but PLEASE bear with me, I swear I have a point. Also, I promised Klance would be a big part of this meta and I was not lying so just... be patient. This is important.
Lance's arc has always been romance and that became the most obvious here. I want to say that out of all the un-bloomed seeds on this list, this is the one that is nearest to completion because his arc with Allura will conclude -- I predict -- early on in season 8.
Allura is important to Lance's arc, we can't deny that. His crush on her is superficial at first. This is proven later in the season; when Allura sacrifices herself so Shiro can escape the Galra ship, Lance is no more worried about her than the other paladins. Honestly, Coran and Shiro are more worried about Allura than Lance is. And that's saying something considering how much he worries about her later in the series.
The A//urance seed -- which I believe is mostly platonic and only dips into romance a little bit but will go right back to platonic -- was planted in this episode. It doesn't really grow much until season 5. That's not to say Lance's thing for Allura is not mentioned or focused on until then. No, what I mean is it is not DEVELOPED until season 5.
In the first two seasons, it's basically a running gag, there's not real seriousness behind it. Season 3, after Lance supports Keith's leadership, shows a turn in their relationship from running gag to actual friendship. However, season 3 doesn't show us much of this -- we only get focus on it in episode 2. After that, their relationship is sidelined for Lance and Keith's development.
We got a scene or two in season 4 of their friendship, but relationships aside from Pidge's and Matt's are not really explored or focused on in this season.
That's where season 5 comes in, because that's when we see them have serious scenes together that are akin to their scenes in s3e02. It's also where we see that Lance's crush on her is no longer a gag. In fact, until season 6, it's practically non-existent. Season 5 instead focuses on their friendship. Season 6 focuses on his one-sided crush.
And season 7...
Here's the thing: Season 7 isn't as A//urance-friendly as is believed. Sure, they get two nice scenes together, one including mutual blushing, and both including teasing from Lance's sister. However, there's something much, much different about their interactions here than in the previous seasons, and that is Lance's attitude.
Because Lance doesn't seem that terribly happy that Allura might be reciprocating his crush. He smiles, yes, but he only really blushes because of his sister's teasing, and he denies that Allura could possibly have any feelings for him. While, yes, that could be due to his insecurities, but if season 7 showed us anything about Lance, it's that his insecurities are finally lifting and he's finally gaining confidence in himself and his abilities.
If season 7 showed us anything about their relationship, it's that Allura initiated both of their scenes. Aside from that? Lance... actually kinda of ignored Allura for most of the season. His attention was more focused on his family and, well, Keith.
And that's something I've noticed has been consistent throughout the series since season 3.
In season 3, once Lance became Keith's right-hand man, his flirtations stopped COMPLETELY. He not only stopped flirting with girls in general, he even stopped flirting with ALLURA. And this stuck throughout the rest of season 3.
Season 4 had Keith leaving the team, yet Lance's flirting didn't pick back up. I believe this was because he really missed Keith and wasn't quite ready to fall back into his old habits. Season 5 is much the same.
Now his sudden flirtations with Allura (he only flirts with her on two occasions, I must point out) in season 6 seem out of nowhere. However, there was some build-up to it, what with his development with her in the previous season and the fact that he was jealous of Lotor's closeness with Allura. Not a lot of build-up and was still kind of sudden, but there was some.
However, I want to point something out: He started flirting again in the same season that has Keith's return. I believe this was deliberate and will play an important role later on.
Season 6 is also when we find out the depth of Lance's feelings -- it's not love, but it's a much deeper crush than he used to have.
This seed was planted in the first episode and was focused on quite a lot throughout its introductory episode and the episodes through the rest of the season. It took a while to grow, but it finally is and it is nearing it's blossoming. Like I said, I believe this seed will reach its full bloom early in season 8.
The last seed, however, will not reach its own full bloom until the end of season 8.
And the very last seed is-- oh come on, you know exactly what it is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, it's Klance. Of course it is.
Okay, so Lance's and Keith's relationship was one of the focal points of the episode. The seed that is their relationship was planted here and it's been growing this entire series. We've watched it grow and bloom, its growth being a focal point of the series, and season 7 did not ignore this. Actually, season 7 showcased their growth. It showed how much their relationship, which was once built on jabs and competition, is now built completely on mutual trust and respect and devotion. For God's sake, Lance called Keith the future! Compare that to how he interacted with Keith in the first episode and you see how much their seed has bloomed and how much season 7 did not only NOT ignore this growth, but actually made it one of the season's main themes.
I want to bring up these screenshots:
Tumblr media
This might be a reach, but I find it interesting that Lance is standing in between Allura and Keith in this shot. Like, right smack dab in between them. Meanwhile, he isn't even looking at them. He's looking at Coran's pod, his face being in neutral territory. To me, this screams a subtle hint of Lance and his two love interests.
Tumblr media
His front is facing Allura, his back to Keith. This seems like a visual to Lauren Montgomery's "He knows what he wants but not what he needs" thing. He wants Allura, is facing her, and he has his back to what he actually needs because what he wants and what he needs to not align. His face is in looking in neutral grounds, showing that while he prefers one side to the other, both sides are options.
It's also interesting to note that Allura is above him because of the pod. Later in the series, we find out he believes that Allura is above him, that he is beneath her, inferior to her.
Keith is below him but is stepping up to reach Lance's spot. He stays on the steps for a bit, but...
Tumblr media
He obviously makes those final steps and a few minutes into the scene, he is standing beside Lance (something that happens a lot throughout the series). This is interesting because while Lance always secretly viewed Keith as being above him (i.e. better than him), him and Keith have always been on level ground with neither of them being superior to the other -- they just have different strengths and weaknesses and it takes Lance time to realize that just because he and Keith don't have the same strengths doesn't mean Keith is better than him because there are things that Lance is better at Keith in (shooting, being stealthy, strategies, etc.). They were always on level ground. Lance and Keith, neck-and-neck.
We have this shot:
Tumblr media
In this one, everyone is looking at Shiro, and everyone's faces has the expression of excitement (and trepidation for Hunk because he's concerned about the bodysuit's size in proportion to him). Everyone is looking at Shi- no wait, Lance is definitely looking at Keith.
Tumblr media
See? His line of sight is pointed directly at Keith. Someone pointed out that he supposed to be looking at Shiro, that his line of sight, if continued, points to Shiro. This is what I had to say to that:
"See I thought that, too, which is why I didn’t catch it until now. Lance’s line of sight COULD be leading to Shiro, but instead of looking at his face like everyone else, he’d be looking at Shiro’s man-titties. And while they are very nice, I doubt Lance was actually looking at them. If he was supposed to be looking at Shiro like the rest of the team, his irises would have to be right in between the top and bottom lines of his eye outlines. That’s how everyone elses shes are animated – even Keith’s irises are positioned upward to properly look at Shiro. Hunks irises are more down, yes, but that’s because hes taller than Shiro. But Shiro is slightly taller than Lance, so the position of Lance’s irises if hes looking at Shiro doesnt make sense as his irises would have to right in between the top and bottom lines of his eye outlines. Instead, they’re pointed down, at Keith."
Here's a quick edit I did to show where Lance's irises would have to be to be pointing to Shiro:
Tumblr media
NOW he's looking directly at Shiro. But that's not the official animation we got. No, what we got was this:
While this could boil down to Lance having small irises, making it difficult to animate exactly where they need to be, I don't buy that. Hunk's irises are small in this shot and were animated fine, and s1e01 has some of the best animation the series has seen (I'd say only The Black Paladins tops it). The animators knew what they were doing. This was deliberate.
Then there's this screenshot:
Tumblr media
I just think this one is pretty.
I also want to show just how often Lance and Keith end up standing next to each other. Here's a link to a compilation someone made of all the times Lance and Keith stood next to each other in just the first episode.
This? All deliberate. There is no way this was done accidentally, considering how often it happened in just this one episode and how often it happens in the series henceforth. One post would not be enough to showcase all the times they stood next to each other throughout the series. They're next to each other more often than any other character -- they always gravitate to each other, are constantly and consistently animated next to each other, even in season 7.
A lot of people assumed that A//urance and Ka/cxa was now set up for the endgame ships, but I think those people are jumping to conclusions waaaaaay too quickly.
You see, here's the thing about endgame ships.
They happen at the end.
Any ships being set up in season 7 are going to be rushed because they are not endgame. Josh Keaton keeps repeating that this is being written as a slow burn -- he wants us to remember that, so he's constantly saying it. Only Klance fits that term.
I want to bring in the Legend of Korra for just a second to prove my point.
LoK did not start off with Korrasami. One of the creators (Bryan, I think) really liked the idea of Korra and Asami being together, but they were operating under the assumption that they only had one season and Makorra was considered the easier relationship to develop. So Korra and Asami started out somewhat as rivals -- what with both girls liking the same guy, and Korra being suspicious of Asami's father and allies. Then they got greenlit for more seasons. What's the first thing they do? Season 2 dismantles Makorra and the season finale makes sure we know that these two are NOT getting back together and will not be endgame. Seasons 3 and 4 then go on to develop Korra's and Asami's relationship, but it was done subtly, to the point where there were many fans that thought the romance in their relationship came out of nowhere. They were wrong -- the friendship between these two was probably the most developed one of the series. Asami ended up back with Mako in season 2 after he and Korra broke up, but their relationship was shown to have ended season 2-3, where Asami began developing with Korra more. Both Asami and Korra had romantic relationships before ending up as each others endgame, and their relationship didn't take its real dramatic turn until season 4 -- the series' finale season.
Keith and Lance's relationship share a LOT of similarities -- which makes sense considering how many of Voltron's showrunners worked on Avatar and LoK. Klance is practically genderbended Korrasami IN S P A C E. A lot of what I mentioned up above about Korrasami fits Klance a lot -- both relationships started out rocky, turned into a friendship of mutual trust and respect, and are the most developed relationships of their respective series. The difference is that Voltron's showrunners knew how much time they had and didn't have to divert the relationship's endgame like LoK had to do with Makorra/Asamako/Korrasami. Klance's relationship development ended up much slower but much smoother because of it.
I actually regret judging season 7 as harshly as I had, because there was a lot of goodness in there and it really didn't kill Klance (a conclusion everyone, myself included, jumped to). A//urance and Ka/cxa? Yeah, it's there. But they're so tacked on that they're practically afterthoughts. The relationship that actually got focus this season? Klance. We saw the inherent trust Keith has in Lance in almost every episode, and we saw the high opinion Lance has of Keith as well as how much Keith leaving hurt Lance more than anybody else. Their relationship was a focus in season 7, one that I feel a lot of people overlooked because of a few tacked-on scenes featuring the other aforementioned ships. Honestly? I'd say that while this season isn't as Klance-centric as season 3, it probably fits in the number two spot. Don't believe me? Go watch it again, like, REALLY watch it and see how much Klance meat is in this season. Because there's a LOT.
Their relationship has always been a focal point of the series, and while some seasons didn't focus on it as much as others (compare seasons 1, 3, and 7 with 2, 4, 5, and 6 -- keeping in mind that seasons 4 and 5 hardly had Keith in it and seasons 2, 4, and 6 still had some noteworthy Klance moments), it has still been the most focused-on and developed relationship.
And that started with the very first episode.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The very first episode planted their seed and that seed's growth has not been ignored, contrary to popular belief. And that's where the "laters" and "soons" come in.
Because see the finished seeds list? All of those seeds were planted in the very first episode. And how long did it take for them to blossom? A LONG TIME. The earliest one we got was the Lance and Shiro seed, and that took until SEASON 3 to bloom. Another took until SEASON 5 to even SPROUT. The rest? Took until season 7. SEASON 7. That, to me, is proof that the showrunners have not thrown out the seeds they've planted in the beginning; it's just taking a long while for them to sprout and blossom. The fact that most of them took until the second-to-last season to fully come to fruition is absolute proof that early-planted seeds are not suddenly being ignored. We just need to be patient. Just because these seeds aren't blooming fast enough for our liking doesn't mean they're not blooming at all. It's not over until it's over. We still have another season for those seeds to blossom, so let's look to the future with hope and confidence!

Most Sensible Voltron End Game Ships:
Note: this doesn't mean I don't LIKE other ships, but logically, given that Voltron is a CHILDREN'S CARTOON, these ones make the most sense story-telling wise. Here's why.
Hunk/Romelle:
Tumblr media
I start here because I think this will likely be the least controversial. They set up in the first ep of S7 that Romelle and Hunk clearly think alike. They also set up that even though Lance is attracted to Romelle initially, she soon actually annoys him. On the other hand Hunk finds Romelle's thought processes to be so like his own that he acts she's like his own personal God-send ("It's like, I think it, you say it!") Likewise, Romelle seems to rather enjoy her interactions with Hunk, and the way he supports her curiousity. For once Hunk gets to be the one "in the know", and Romelle likes and appreciates the way that he interacts with her.
I know there's a lot of talk about doing right by an LGBTQ+ rep character, but I think the "Nice guy who's really smart and awesome but happens to not be conventionally attractive" rep deserves to get an attractive girl who he really does genuinely like and connect with and who genuinely likes, connects with, and respects him.
Lance/Pidge:
Tumblr media
Although we are all understandably wary of trusting anything the writers say at this point, they have pretty much said that they do have an end game for Lance and it's not Allura. While I'd personally love to see a Klance ending, it seems pretty clear that Lance and Keith are both being set up to be straight--Lance shows attraction to basically every conventionally attractive female, and Keith/Acxa is a thing (and a reasonable thing, which I will get to next). So..
Lance and Pidge: first off, Pidge constantly points out and makes fun of Lance's crush on Allura, and at times even seems annoyed by it. She definitely doesn't show any sign of caring about the romantic interests of any of the other characters. Although it's been subtle, as Pidge's priorities have clearly, and rightly, been elsewhere, there's been some hints from the beginning that she's certainly paying attention to Lance's love interests, and is maybe jealous and just covering it up by making fun of him--which is pretty age appropriate, and typical of girls with older brothers: She's more comfortable approaching him on guy level and expressing her annoyances (unconscious jealously) through teasing him and, in the process, attempting to dissuade him from said romantic pursuits.
The writer's stated that Lance would get what he NEEDS in a relationship, not what he WANTS. Pidge is not girly/feminine in an aesthetic sense (what Lance thinks he WANTS), but she's perfectly pretty--it's not like Lance wouldn't be attracted to her once he gets passed his old-school markers of attraction based purely on conventional outer symbols of femininity (I.e. If he saw Pidge a few years older and in a dress, he'd almost certainly have a different reaction to her). Pidge does have an abundance of qualities that Lance NEEDS in a partner.
Pidge and Lance balance and trust each other. They have from the very first episode of Voltron. If you think of the first episode as establishing our main and most relatable characters, we really enter the story through the trio of Lance, Pidge and Hunk. Keith and Shiro--who they are and how they're involved in what's happening--are mostly mysteries to us in the first ep. In the typical trio story set up you have the main male character, who represents ego, in story structure, and you have his two best friends, who represent his ID and Super-ego. Often the Super-Ego character is female, and the ID male. The function of the super-ego is to check, regulate and correct the impulses of the ego, which the ID often supports/supplies. The super-ego, basically, is the one who thinks things through, when the ego doesn't want to, and the ID can't. Pidge is the super-ego.
What Lance NEEDS is someone who he both implicitly trusts and who can be the things he isn't in such a way that it helps him to grow, while still having his partner see him as an equal and having respect for the qualities and strengths he has as an individual and that he contributes to the balance of the relationship.
Allurance shippers will say "Allura can be those things too!" But she can't, because she is not and never will be his equal. She is a 10,000 year old Princess from a race of people that are vastly more evolved than humans. She was raised to rule a planet and take on the burden of the universe. No matter how much she might LIKE Lance and trusts him as an ally and a friend, that quality of equality and challenge that actually attracts confident and capable women to men does not exist between Allura and Lance--which is why she was attracted to Lotor.
The contrast between how Allura reacts to Lotor and how she reacts to Lance is a great representation of what creates actual romantic attraction vs. friendship compatibility: Lotor is her equal in his own right and can challenge her to see and grow beyond her pre-conceived notions, while having enough similarities that he understands and fits into the world she comes from and will return to (that of Galatic leadership and responsibility). Allura and Lance do not have that kind of shared reality and the ability to build together as equals that comes with it.
Pidge and Lance, on the other hand, start from the same place--they're kids who were smart and capable and followed a dream, and who have taken on the unanticipated responsibilities and adventures that came as a consequence of following that dream. They constantly demonstrate that their gut instincts are aligned. They do not have fundemental differences in terms of values and unconscious life expectations, and those things matter when you're talking endgame, because endgame means when two people are grown ups and they have kids and grow old together--that real life stuff.
Allura and Lance might have a minor romantic arch, in fact I suspect they will, because they will need to in order for all both Allura and Lance to fully realize they're not compatible. This will also force Pidge to become conscious of her feelings for Lance. From there we can from there spring board into Pidge/Lance and back into...
Lotor/Allura:
Tumblr media
So, I'm not at all surprised we didn't see Lotor or Haggar in Season 7. It would have been too easy. We needed the stakes to be much higher, and the only way to do that was to bring the Galra threat to Earth, which couldn't have happened with Lotor as Emporer, or even with Haggar in charge--she's a much bigger schemer than just blindly chasing those lions across the galaxy like all those dumb male Galra meatheads want to do. Also, it gives her time to realisticly retrieve Lotor, fix him physically, and in the process develop some sort of relationship that would lead to them trusting each other enough to come back (allegedly) on the same side in S8.
I don't want to speculate on the plot of S8, and I won't. But I think that plot stuff aside, Lotor has to come back for the sake of Allura's character development.
ALLURA IS A RACIST. She is not malicious (just like most racists aren't malicious). But she seriously discriminates against the Galra just for them being Galra. She has a reason, no one can deny that--Just like someone who gets beat up by a gang of white guys has a reason to be wary of groups of white men, and they might take the trauma of the experience to the degree that they unconsciously start to demonize white men as a group... The trauma creates predudice because the brain is looking for a way to protect you from the trauma that just occurred. So it notes visual markers associated with the trauma, and when it later sees those markers it gets triggered into a state of flight/fight in order to (ideally) prevent you from reexperiencing the trauma associated with those physical markers. It's an evolutionary imperative--it's why we all jump across the room when we see a spider. But this primal imperative does lead to discrimination against groups of people. In my example, being fearful of groups of white men after being the victim of a gang beating is understandable, but is still a PREJUDICE based on their physical likeness to individuals who committed terrible acts, when in reality those physical traits have nothing to do with the terrible act.
It seemed like Allura was making progress with her predudices because of her relationship with Lotor, but Lotor is half Altean. He had to prove to her several times that he was "civilized" and even more knowledgeable about aspects of Altea than her. She fell in love with the Altean part of him. The literal second that she was given reason (by an ALTEAN stranger) to believe that he'd done something terrible and “GALRAN”, she instantly jumped to betraying him without even listening to his side of the story. This act proves that she didn't ever actually consciously see and acknowledge her predjudice and the irrational assumptions it causes her to make, she just was able to temporarily over look the Galran in Lotor for the Altean. So, Allura still has some major self realization to do in this department.
Next, the rash actions of the Paladins destroyed what could have been peace in the universe. Lotor gave them the option pretty much up until the end to stop and think things through even after they betrayed and attacked him. But at the end of S6 it's pretty clear it's Allura calling the shots on whether or not the team listens to Lotor or fights him. And we all know what happens:
She lets her emotions win. She prioritizes her anger--at herself for trusting a Galra--and she completely fails to care about (and likely think through) the bigger picture. Rather than realizing that the new emperor of a civilization that has been systematically enslaving the Galaxy for 10,000 years is trying to give agency back to planets, to create peace, harmony and a universe that works together to fulfill the needs of the whole, she doesn't even listen to him, she just attacks. With Lotor gone, of course the empire will fall and divide to the various generals of power. If Team Voltron had stopped and thought for 5 seconds about that they maybe would have realized that leaving Lotor in that rift was the most selfish and childish thing they ever could have done, humanitarian principles aside even. How many more worlds besides Earth suffered and will suffer for ALLURA'S emotional reactions that stem most deeply from PREJUDICE?
To be clear:
ALLURA believed the word of an ALTEAN she did not know, over the HALF-GALRAN she had fallen in love with, all because she FEARED she was wrong to trust someone with GALRAN blood: "You're more like Zarkon than I could ever have imagined," she tells Lotor. NOT "You're more like Honerva (AN ALTEAN) who began this whole mess by experimenting on quintessence and what happened when one combines it with their own life force and then became so addicted to it that she went crazy and enabled terrible things to happen to innocent peoples and planets." Nope. Even though in all honesty that comparison would have been more accurate, it didn't occur to Allura to accuse Lotor of being corrupt like his ALTEAN mother. What she says to him is essentially, "You're corrupt (and thus more) like your GALRAN father."
So, in order for Allura to grow into someone who is actually mature and responsible enough to lead the Voltron Colition and bring peace to the Galaxy, she's going to have to see the serious error in her actions, and the root prejudice that actually lead to them. And Lotor will be the one to make her see it.
From the moment the Paladins take Lotor prisoner he points out that Allura is discriminating against him based on species and parentage. It's pretty clear that this is set up to be their arch--Both of them are deeply flawed and magnificently gifted individuals who were born and raised to rule worlds, if not whole galaxies. They both have let their personal fears and flaws get in the way of what they could achieve together. In Allura's case the fatal flaw is predudice. In Lotor's it is lack of trust. He should have told her about the Altean colonies, but, rationally feared that he couldn't trust her to hear him out--irony being, if he'd brought it up privately and volunteered the info she probably would have reacted differently. However, Lotor has never had anyone he's trusted or who has trusted him, so he doesn't know that is how trust works. 😢
These two are designed to point out each other's flaws, and help them to correct them (not to make up for them, but to truly help each other change as people by, essentially, calling each other on their shit.) When they do that--Allura facing her racism; Lotor facing his lack of knowing how to actually trust someone fully--then the fatal flaws that lead to the ending of S6 (and the subsequent inter-galactic crisis that the simultaneous betrayal of these two baby-rulers, has caused) will be obliterated, the fatal flaws cured. Allura and Lotor will then be capable of resuming creating the new era of peace they were attempting before, but this time they will succeed because they will have learned to have real transparency/trust, rather than letting their unconscious fears be reasons to mistrust each other when they need to trust each other the most.
Lotura is a ship that is about real equality combined with real consciousness of self and other in relationships. Neither will be able to mature as characters until they see the flaws in Self that their initial (immature) love brought out in each other; the completion of the circle is then conscious change from seeing these flaws, and then forgiving themselves and each other for them. Only then can they can move into a mature love, which will allow them to bring out the best in each other without being blind to the flaws in each other and themselves.
Real love is seeing and dealing with both the good and bad, not ignoring one in favor of the other (this always backfires, as Lotura's first arch demonstrates). And that is a super valuable relationship lesson, that, in a show for kids, is profound and important. Love is seeing and accepting all of your partner and working together to change the things that need to be changed--not getting mad at each other, refusing to listen to what your partner has to say, deflecting with things like "your just like your dad," and subsequent retaliations that take the couple further away from the real issue, like Lotor does when Allura finally hits his weak spot and his basic response is "oh yeah, well your dad sucked too!" And from there it's all just them both being so hurt that reason is lost. That is the state of immature love.
Lotor and Allura are the only two characters who are each other's equals. They are the only two who can call each other on their shit effectively and who can help the other to change and grow. Their arch is about learning how to do that consciously and maturely. How to trust instead of doubt. How to see through the limitations of ego fears (Allura's prejudice, Lotor's not knowing how to trust) and to consciously choose loyalty to each other and to a fully shared vision. Without doing so, neither of these characters can transform from being in their immature Prince/Princess state to being ready for the mature King/Queen state.
Okay, Next...
Keith/Acxa:
Tumblr media
I keep seeing posts where people are saying that this came out of nowhere... frankly, you all need to go back and rewatch the series. Keith and Acxa first meet in season 2 inside the guts of a Weblum. Even though it's clear to them from the start that they're on opposite sides of a war (thank you space suits) they still work together to survive and don't abandon each other even when it might benefit them to do so--they demonstrate immediately that they have a similar honor code/value system.
Every time these two encounter each other, despite remaining on opposite sides, they always help each other in this way that shows they both are in wonder about it--they don't know why, but something, some sort of "I owe you" that can't ever seem to be repaid no matter how often they help each other, is just in affect between them. Obviously, this continues to mount in S7.
So, why can't they just be friends? Well maybe they can, but I don't think that's where this is going...
For one thing, Keith is clearly drawn to his Galran side. He wants to be with the Blades of Mamora more than Team Voltron for a long stretch of time. Then he meets his Galran mom. Keith never got along well with other humans, as is established all over S7. He does get along with all these Galrans.
Those of you who know psychology know, we pretty much always marry some variation of our parents. Keith has a Galran mom who he likes and loves a lot. Acxa fits his mommy archetype. And, she's a half-breed like him--she knows what it's like to not fully belong to any one people.
Plus, as stated and well established in canon, these two just can't help but constantly save each other. I think more than ANY ship possibility, this one is obvious, and would totally make end-game sense.
So...
Shiro/???:
Tumblr media
On the one hand, I'd love to see everyone all happy and paired up living happily ever after, but think it completely fits all of Shiro's character development to end up alone.
S7 firmly establishes that as a person, Shiro's ambitions/dreams matter more to him than the emotional needs of his partner, Adam. That's okay, there's nothing wrong with that, but, as a personality trait, it's not going to make for a happy long term relationship. In relationships you need to be willing to sacrifice things for your partner--not everything, not all the time--but you don't have the right to make serious decisions that affect you both without giving weight to the other person's needs. Shiro makes it clear that Adam's feelings don't matter to his decision to go on the Kerberos mission. That's not good partnering.
Adam, on the other hand, demonstrates a much more partner-oriented approach. He knows this is Shiro's dream, and because he loves him, he put his own wants/fears aside to support Shiro going on his first mission. He doesn't want to stop Shiro from being happy, but, when he tells Shiro that if Shiro goes AGAIN, Adam won't be here when he gets back, he's realizing that he's got to let Shiro understand that he can't be the only one in their relationship caring about the other's feelings. Adam needs a partner who will give the relationship serious weight in serious life decisions. Shiro demonstrates through his actions that he does not value the relationship more than his ambitions.
Shiro is a great team leader, but that doesn't necessarily make him a good life partner.
So, if Shiro ends up realizing this about himself and choosing to not have a romantic partnership, there is a really valuable lesson and story line there:
In American culture there is a lot of pressure to pair up. We are taught from childhood that real happiness hinges upon being partnered--at the end of every Disney movie the princess and prince finally get to be together forever and this is how we know they will "live happily every after". But not everyone is suited to relationships--and that has nothing to do with sexuality.
Shiro is gay, but that doesn't make him intrinsically more suited to long-term relationships than being straight makes anyone suited to long term relationships.
The LGBTQ+ community seems to be offended that Shiro isn't being represented in a relationship, but honestly I think they're being done a great service--Shiro is being understood as human rather than as his sexuality. His sexuality doesn't make him who he is. Being honest with himself about whether or not long-term relationships are actually something he is built for, is important for everyone to think about, and it's maybe especially important for LGBTQ+ kids to have a role model who does think about this.
One of the dangers of being LGBTQ+ is that people unconsciously reduce you to being a label--and you are so so much more than that label. Your sexuality is just one facet of Self, just like being straight is just one facet of Self for straight people. The pressure to be in a relationship as "proof" of your "identity" is very real for young LGBTQ+ kids, and the fear of leaving a relationship once you find one is far more intense because you fear your options are limited and you might not find someone else of your sexuality/who accepts your sexual-identity. So, LGBTQ+ kids are more vulnerable to staying in relationships that they've outgrown as a result of semi-conscious societal pressure to both pair up and to "prove" their "identity", and to fear that they might not ever find another relationship.
Shiro being the rep for the LBGTQ+ community teaches kids that you can be any sexuality/sexual-identity, and it doesn't change anything else about you--it doesn't change that you're smart and skilled and capable of being a space pilot, it doesn't change that it's perfectly possible and okay for a relationship (or even long term relationships in general) to not be right for you, it doesn't change your ability to be a good team leader... it doesn't change or mean anything else about you any more than a straight person being straight does. It's a facet of Self, to be weighed against many many other facets of Self.
...All that said, if they do somehow make it canon that Adam miraculously survived and he and Shiro are end game, that could be a great character development arch too, as long as it involves Shiro acknowledging that if he's going to resume being in a relationship with Adam he has to make decisions WITH Adam, and respect that Adam's emotions and needs matter equally to his own. If Shiro isn't willing to chose the truly rational emotional well-being of his partner (I mean Adam was reasonably scared that Shiro would die in space) over his own ambitions, he's not compatible with Adam. And that's okay too.
And, lastly:
Zethrid/Ezor:
Tumblr media
Here's another rep for the LGBTQ+ community. In contrast to Shiro's story line, which may end up with him consciously deciding that committed relationships aren't as important to him as other parts of life and is happy being alone, we are now being introduced to a relationship in which two women who have worked together for a long time are discovering happiness through exploring their romantic connection. From what we've seen in S7, it looks like Zethrid and Ezor are experiencing a deeper trust and intimacy as a result of their new relationship.
I think it's great for two characters who are largely portrayed as villains/secondary shades-of-gray characters to demonstrate to people how relationships can change your priorities. Zethrid and Ezor seem to have made each other the first priority, rather than the ever-convoluted mission. They're still in the middle of this war, but now they care most about looking out for each other, rather than prioritizing the Galra Empire or Lotor. They are finding meaning in what they've fought for through their love for each other. I think they will be taken on an arch that is the opposite of Shiro's, in which they increasingly discover that their relationship and love for each other matters more to them than the military ambitions that may have once fueled them as individuals. ❤️
In conclusion:
While I think this is clear, in case it isn't, I am not bashing on ANY ship in this post, I'm just explaining why I think these ships are the logical end game ships for good story telling.
If you are so inclined, I'd love to hear your thoughts presented in a respectful and legible manner. ❤️
Thanks for reading, I know it's a long one. 😅

VLD S7 “Heart of the Lion”
Okay so get this! I have some subtle observations 🤣 although this episode includes quite a bit of characters and constant screen switch, even hints of what S8 will have in store, there is a subtle main focus on Lance.
Here we go:
To start off with, the episode of course gives us insight of Allura giving the crystal of her tiara to Shiro’s new arm in the beginning. After that, first close up screen time of the characters is Lance before the others in a briefing. They discussed their upcoming mission, Keith and Allura are infiltrating on the ground with Lance sniping from up high but the episode gives us a personal insight of Lance valuing his sisters safety.
Next, I think it was done on purpose for Keith and Pidge to enter the base themselves with Allura and James outside. Lance has immediate watch on Keith and Allura’s movements. This point in the episode, I think, is symbolic of who Lance values or is closest with in Team Voltron. He has immediate lookout for Keith and Allura when they needed him, looking out for Keith in the base and helping out Allura when they were spotted (she even gave thanks). With Veronica teasing Lance, he shuts down claims of affection over the communication devices not exactly from embarrassment but wanting to focus on the mission.
Then we get a cute mirroring scene of Pidge signaling Keith of her plan to get passed the sentries. Keith manages to catch onto her plan, which is a throwback to a mission he and Lance did in S1.
Lance even gives off an impressive show in his skills as a paladin, which I believe impressed Kinkade.
Now we get the talk of connecting with the lions. Lance is first shown in close up of mentioning how the lions found them lost in space. Coincidentally next is Keith talking of how Red has saved his life so many times. THIS gives the audience a hint of Lance about to experience a close call saving from his Red Lion. I have a reach about this, I believe there was a subtle meaning behind it that could have been Keith handing down knowledge towards Lance, we never seen a bayard exchange but talking about connecting to the lions, Keith is the only one mentioning something that directly focuses on Lance in this episode. But that’s a reach~
Now we have the moment Allura tells Lance to stay safe out there. He’s surprised obviously but hey his all time crush is showing concern for his wellbeing. His value of his feelings for Allura show in this moment, keep in mind he does shut down claims of affection again but it’s more like keeping himself on his toes towards Allura.
Okay the frame switches in this episode are crazy~ every time there is a close up of Lance moment, it’s always Keith or Allura shown next 🤣
So I noticed when Allura tells Lance to stay safe, she doesn’t smile until after Veronica hides behind Lance. The blush was there before she said anything to Lance, I think it’s safe to say she was embarrassed overall but wanted to show gratitude for Lance saving her earlier in the episode. So... yeah her interest of Lance may have started from this point but I can’t say romantic but it definitely feels platonic, I mean she did get close to Lance while Keith was gone.
Lance’s difficultly connecting to the Lion was due to being attacked. This was another major Lance moment. He needed to use his own skills to protect his family (which is one of his values) but as the audience see’s, his skills weren’t enough to save them. I’m reaching again when I say that it goes back to his insecurities; he wasn’t able to protect his sister as he was in that moment and had no choice but to accept he failed with his life near its end. Going back to what Keith pointed out earlier, Red saves his life last minute. Thus Lance experiences visually what Keith described. I mean obviously he has before but why make that a key observation in the scene? 👀
Same topic from previous point, frameworks man, shows Allura worries first, then Keith, Hunk, and Pidge. Lance comes back into conscious with hearing Allura, Hunk, Pidge, then Keith is the last to be heard loud and clear with his name yelled twice causing Lance to finally gain conscious and get up.
So with my analysis, the end of the episode shows the next episodes main plot, THIS entire episodes title was a subtle focus on specifically Lance’s values of his heart. Yes I’m aware the other characters were definitely included, I say mainly Lance because it was just himself that had more focus and individual scenes. We got peek of this lions heart~ 😁
My personal input: I think creators planned to give insight on Lance for S8, for his arc basically. There is a reason most of these moments were a focus, hearing about Lance’s family may have an episode of being in Cuba and more on Veronica’s background could be linked to this episode.
As for Keith and Allura, we just know who is at top value to Lance from the team. Bromance and romance maybe? 🤔 platonic close friendships? Or a cause of conflict between the two towards Lance?
I’m seriously feeling like there is going to be A LOT of romance in S8. Why? Well, mecha anime has tendency for building romantic relationships and giving them climaxes near the end, which happens to be one of the many inspirations the creators have. Be it side characters or main protagonists. We got us a Lance love arc coming~ not enough proof but just analysis of the show and official poster art.
ANYWAY, there is my subtle analysis 😁
I don’t post these to bring your hopes up because it’s not my intention but to share my thoughts, theories, observations~ don’t take me too seriously because I’m not responsible for any type of upset this causes because reading it was the audience own risk 🤔 however, it’s awesome of what I noticed! 🤩 I’m seriously about to think of some love rivalry between Keith and Allura soon seriously 🤣🤣🤣 jokes aside, yes I do ship Klance and don’t look down on others for their own ships. To each their own~

Post season Klance fans: Welp. Klance is finally dead. It’s been a good run but we just have to face the music. Klance will never be cannon.
A week later: *Jeremy Shada or anyone on the Voltron team giving subtle hints of klance maybe being cannon by the end of the series.*
Klance fans: WE LIVE!!!

The klance development is a lot easier to see and map out when you realise that the short seasons were originally whole seasons
If they kept seasons 3 and 4 as just season 3 and seasons 5 and 6 as just season 4:
Season 1:
Lots of klance development + bonding moment
Season 2:
Not as much development, but we do get the tropey elevator scene + Lance worrying about Keith in the BOM episode
Season 3:
First half is a whole klance buffet, second half is where Keith leaves and Lance is visibly sad about it
Season 4:
Mostly focused on a//urance development but we get a ton of parallels with a//urance to klance and Texas/Krolia to klance + bi Lance hints towards the end
Season 5:
Not much relationship development between anyone in this season, but a lot of subtle klance moments + Lance looking jealous/worried when Keith goes for Acxa + Klance choosing each other in The Feud

"All of the love we threw away, making the same mistakes again"
(or Why I am upset for Klance)
You know, I don't use to call myself a shipper, because I don't really enjoy ships for fun or in fanon... I've always started to ship two characters because of their writing. Klance is not just shipping. I am a graduated screenplay writer myself, I know what I talk about (even if there's no need to be graduated, honestly, to recognize some things).
I am sad because all the premises and all the development between Keith and Lance has been literally thrown away, has been totally forgot. The two even seem to going to opposite direction from the point they reached, losing along the way all of that development.
If you intertwine two characters from the very start, if you depict them as The Duo, narratively and visually, if you design for them the "rivals to friends" trope... you need to cultivate these planted seeds, you can not just forget them. I'd want to trust the writers because we have still 13 episodes but it's very difficult now to explore all that could be explored. I trusted them till season 6 that was a very well-written season, a masterpiece, but now you know why I can't trust them anymore? Because they gave us suddenly A//ura's crushing on Lance, after six season of no signs of romantic attachment from her. I know, feelings can develop with time, but if they wanted to tell this kind of story, than it was made very, very poorly, in a way that do not recognize at all why A//ura should be starting to develop feelings for Lance. Because the truth is that you do not develop feelings for a person only because they like you.
On the other side, they built Lance's and Keith's arcs to mirror each other and they did so many things to emphasize it. K/L reached a peak in season 3 that was, like JDS himself said, a natural and beautiful progression. Even their separation from season 4 was emphasized and was necessary for their personal arcs.
I am not saying that Keith and Lance must have been canon as a couple. It would have been amazing, ground-breaking, but I don't want it necessarly. This is not my story, I can't expect nothing. What I'm saying is that Keith and Lance deserved to reunite properly, with another emphasized moment, or at least addressing all that they had, all that tied them, their feelings before and after the separation.
All the very little tiny hints we had (I'm talking about Lance reaction to Keith saving Ac/xa and the "you ran away" line) might be important, might be a very subtle way to keep their dynamic alive... but even in this case it's useless if it'll never explode in a certain moment.
Mostly with all the Lance's self confidence thing, that is strictly related to Keith (!!), they created and are still creating a lot of material that could have matured from this season on out. Season 6 was great because it ended a circle between two main characters, Keith and Sh/ro, concluding their dynamic, but more importantly explaining the very link between the two of them. Lance's self confidence is strictly related to Keith and placed the ground for their early relationship. Lance is still not confident in himself, they showed it to us, and it's not fair if his awareness will come from the acceptance (that is not even immediate, but is coming as a rebound) of another character (A//ura). It would be fair if Keith was an asshole or someone not deserving Lance's maturation. But Keith is not. Keith once helped Lance, he demonstrated to be the right person to make Lance feel accepted, valuable and self assured. I am not speaking from a ship pov, I am not discrediting A/L, I truly believe that any characters could have been the right choice to Lance. But, speaking of what the writers actually have written, speaking of facts, Lance's insecurities are connected to Keith from the very start, and they deserve to be solved by Keith and Lance only.
Speaking of Keith, it's just pointless and hurtful to not see him recognize properly Lance importance and value, most for what Lance did in the past, during Keith's bad times. Even in this case, we had some little hints to Keith's attachment (he chooses Lance to escape the game, he trusts him to lead the team and so on) buuut... Keith's arc is based not only on self assurance, but mostly on breaking his walls and accepting sentiments, accepting to love and to be loved, to express his feelings. He do it very well after he has resolved his issues, now he can properly communicates with every single member on the team but what about Lance? The only one that previously Keith opened up to?? What's the point of making Keith closed again just with Lance?? Just to keep up an useless bickering?
So yes, even if I enjoyed season 7, I think the writers have been very lazy and obvious with these two, throwing away the best well-written relationship, the most intriguing, and also the most passionate (after the brotherly one between K/S). Am I sad? Yes. Am I disappointed? Maybe a little, but we still can see if a little of all that will be bringed up. Maybe we still have a little chance.

Sometimes what we want isn’t necessarily what we get.
Tumblr media
This quote hit me hard and it’s not only because of the message it’s trying to get across but also because of what it implies for Lance as a character. I believe this quote easily sums up Lance’s character arc entirely, and foreshadows that in the end, Lance will end up in a different place than where he expected to be in the beginning.
Disclaimer: These are my own personal thoughts on Lance’s character arc/development and it involves ships. I don’t want any conflict so please read this knowing that you might not like what you see, especially if you’re an Allurance shipper.
The quote also links in with what Lauren said in an interview:
Tumblr media
Link to original post by VLD-News.
Going back to the context of the episode where Lance said it (S3Ep2), Lance wanted to stay with Blue but in the end, Red was the lion he needed in order for his character to further develop. Blue is the nurturing lion which takes her paladins and helps them reach the greatness she sees inside them. Lance reached that with her, and is now ready to step up the ladder and become the right hand man of Voltron.
But apart from the lion switch linking back to the original 80s Voltron, it also adds a twist of it’s own, summing up Lance’s character arc and easily hinting that there will be LGBT rep (endgame Klance). There have been a lot of subtle hints throughout the show about LGBT rep and if I wanted to sum them all up in one post, it would be WAY too long.
Anyway, if we see Red as Keith and Blue as Allura, it mirrors Lance’s relationship with both of these characters. Lance and Allura’s relationship is beautiful and I love their dynamics, but as they are portrayed in the show, we are not meant to see them in any romantic light. We’re constantly shown how Allura doesn’t reciprocate Lance’s feelings, and those scenes matter to get a message across to the kids that if you constantly hit on someone who doesn’t like you in that way, you won’t get anywhere. If you’re persistent and keep on trying, it still won’t work out for you.
Blue’s rejection of Lance shows Allura’s own rejection of his love, and while they have a close relationship as friends, they’ll never be more than that. Blue and Lance’s bond in s1 and s2 portrays his relationship with Allura, because even though they won’t be lovers, they’ll always be there for each other (even putting themselves in harm’s way to protect the other).
Tumblr media
Lance’s feelings for Allura are genuine but it’s unrequited love. “What we want isn’t necessarily what we get” and what Lance needs right now is for someone to love him the same way he loved Allura (Red roaring for Lance when Blue rejected him). I’m a firm believer that in future episodes, we will see Keith being there for Lance, picking him up back on his feet and helping him get out of his broken state (just like Red roared for him).
Lance’s isolation from the rest of the team was shown on purpose and many of the fans noticed it, it was intentional. For me this moment of isolation shows Lance’s state right when Blue rejected him, and right before the moment when Red roared for him. Again, we were meant to see this isolation Lance found himself in when Keith left, and the crew made an effort to show this. In a way Lance is slowly sinking, until he hits rock bottom (s6), and then he will swim back up again and stand tall.
Tumblr media
For me personally, this Lance mirrors the Lance who was rejected by Blue perfectly.
Tumblr media
The crew also made an effort to show Lance parting with Blue instead of, for example, showing Keith giving Lance his Red Bayard. They did this on purpose, because Lance parting from Blue was a major part of his character arc. It needed to be focused on because it essentially foreshadows him moving on from Allura, someone he had a crush on since s1. And now after s6, Lance accepted that Allura will never see him in the same way he saw her.
Tumblr media
This scene, in my opinion, was the most important scene for Lance in s6 because it shows him moving on from Allura and accepting that she won’t return his feelings. Also the way that scene was structured reminded me of the lion switch as well.
Blue (Allura) rejecting Lance, and then Red (Keith) roaring for him, which mirrored Keith appearing on the screen just after Lance and Allura hug. The scene also parallels one where Allura received a call from Lotor in S6Ep3 where she is happy to see him. In the same way Allura was happy to see Lotor, Lance was happy to see Keith on the screen. It’s interesting that they structured the scene in this way and made Keith appear after such an important moment for Lance.
Tumblr media
Lance and Allura’s hug parallels the Allura and Keith hug that they had in S2Ep12. In that scene Allura accepted Keith for who he was; part Galra. She pushed aside her hatred in favour of who Keith was as a person. The same way Lance accepted Allura’s disinterest in him, and that he won’t have a chance with her. Everyone will interpret the hug scene differently, but for me, it marks the end of any possible romantic relationship these two characters might have had. The two hug scenes mirror, and in my opinion, they both mark an ending to something. In the Keith & Allura hug, it marks an end for Allura’s prejudice against Keith for being part Galra. In her hug with Lance, it marks an ending to Lance trying to pursue her romantically. Both hugs show acceptance and an end.
Also, it’s interesting to note that the title of the episode is “All Good Things” which comes from “All Good Things Come To An End” and in this episode, the hug represents ending for romance between Allurance.
Tumblr media
Perhaps it may also make Allura look like an evil person here because she knows about Lance’s feelings towards her (thanks mice), and she’s still embracing him despite her rejecting his feelings. But while that may seem to be the case here, it’s really not. Allura is in a rough place during the hug because she was just heartbroken by Lotor who turned out to be hiding things from her (a major secret considering that she was looking for other Alteans all this time). It’s understanding that she would be broken, and she found comfort in Lance as a close friend. Meanwhile for Lance, while he is trying to comfort her, he is also realising that it’s the end of romance between them (a pivotal moment in his character arc).
(Also it’s interesting to note that Red rejected Allura, just like Keith rejected any romanic feelings that had potential to develop between them. However, since Keith is gay-coded, and not interested in women, there was no chance for them to become romantically involved).
Tumblr media
If we were to follow what happened in the lion switch scene (after s6), then now Lance would be in a moment when Red would roar for him, coming to comfort him after Blue (Allura’s) rejection. This makes me speculate that in s7, we’ll see Keith stand up and be there for Lance. Emotionally, Keith wasn’t ready for Lance and neither was Lance ready for him (even though they had a lot of romantically coded scenes since s1). Keith is gay coded, and there’s a fabulous video about the topic done by Fictional Crystals. She also made a video about Lance being bi, the link to that video is here.
Also, this analysis of S2Ep2 is fantastic, and shows how Lance being a closed bi is portrayed subtly throughout the whole of the episode. I highly suggest you have a read.
The legendary bonding moment in S1Ep5, was the beginning of Keith’s romantic interest in Lance and it was at that point that Keith thought he and Lance may be a thing. But then of course Lance kept constantly rejecting him because he wasn’t ready. The tweet (Original tweet here):
Tumblr media
It’s interesting because it tells us that Lance remembers the bonding moment but he wasn’t emotionally ready to accept it. The wording of this suggests that possibly in the future Lance will come to accept himself for who he is. He wasn’t ready to face his feeling for Keith then, but that may be beginning to change after Allura’s rejection in s6. I can’t interpret this in any other way than it hinting to Lance being emotionally ready at some point in the series.
Just a little note about Keith here. What I mean by “Keith not being ready” is the way he interacted with Lance in s1, s2 and s3. Instead of reacting on his own, he follows Lance’s example, and it usually always ends up in them bickering. The elevator scene, and the moment where the lights go out, is the perfect example of how Keith is unsure of himself, waiting for Lance to react first before he can give his own reaction. Then we also have Keith being thrown in the position of leadership in s3 and we further see how unsure of himself he is now that he’s the leader of Voltron.
Tumblr media
However, now Keith has developed as a character and I believe that after s6, he won’t repeat the same mistakes. He won’t copy Lance’s reaction but will react in his own way. For example, if the elevator scene were to happen after season 6, then I have no doubt that Keith would have a completely different reaction. Instead of sighing and groaning like Lance did, Keith would maybe look at the door or look at Lance without copying his reaction. It’s these little things that stick out, and I can’t wait to see just how much Keith changed in s7.
Keith wasn’t what Lance needed in s1, s2 and s3. Lance WAS what Keith needed in those seasons and now this will change. I believe that in s7 and onward, Keith WILL be what Lance needs because he is in a place where he knows himself, and is standing firm on his own judgements. He will be there to pick Lance up from his heartbroken state, and he’ll be the one to pull him back onto his feet (Red roaring for Lance). Lance will learn from him, so that he can also become the same kind of a person Keith became, one that came to accept himself for who he is.
Tumblr media
Also the quote I mentioned at the beginning from Lauren fits nicely here:
Tumblr media
As far as Keith’s development goes, he has become self-assured and he also knows himself as well. Now that we’ve reached s6, Keith has reached the peak of his character arc. He found Krolia and they spent 2 years together on that giant space whale. He had enough time to bond with her and find out about his origins. Before that, Keith had spent a lot of time with the BoM, and there he learned the importance of a team. ‘Team over the mission’ is something I believe Keith learned during his time there. I know most of us hated the fact that Keith left, but looking back at it now, I believe it was necessary for him to develop, no matter how much we hated it.
I can’t stress enough how nicely their arcs intertwine with each other. Lance is Keith’s stability, and that was VERY true in s3 especially, but now, Keith will be what Lance needs, especially after two seasons of Lance isolating himself from the rest of the team. Since Keith left, Allura had been the only one to acknowledge Lance’s growth and while the rest of the team noticed it as well, they didn’t voice it.
Since Allura was the only one who reached out to him, I believe that his love for her grew. The scene where Lance came out for the first time and told someone about his worries was the scene between him and Keith in s3 where Lance told Keith that he is the extra wheel and should step down as a paladin. Keith in his own way, assured Lance that wasn’t the case, and it was at that moment that their relationship changed (or the way they view each other).
In my own opinion, I think Lance came to realise that Keith wasn’t what he always thought he was. The pretend rivalry was one-sided from Lance’s side, and now Lance saw Keith for who he really was. He saw Keith as a person he really is, instead of the image he always pushed onto himself (of Keith being his rival). The way the shot of Keith was structured (showing him smiling from hips up), is meant to be shown from Lance’s own eyes. In that one shot we see Keith from a distance rather than up close, and we are meant to see him in that way because that’s the way Lance sees him. It’s as if he’s admiring Keith in that moment, as if he came to acknowledge that Keith has another side to him he didn’t see before (or refused to see).
Tumblr media
I may be stretching it here, but I think that to some extent Lance is admiring Keith as a potential love interest as well. In this moment he may be beginning to look at Keith in a different way, and the scene was meant to show that; a change of view.
Here is a fabulous post that describes this scene in much more detail. I highly recommend that you read it if you have the time.
Tumblr media
This scene is powerful, especially considering what came after. Keith left the team, and this happened when he and Lance were forming this close of a bond. In a way they were both robbed of further bonding with each other. Lance and Keith were partners, just like we were told in the very first episode “We were like rivals. You know, Lance and Keith, neck and neck”. We were meant to attribute these two characters from the very beginning, and visually, the crew also made the effort to make them stand next to each other whenever they could. You can go back and see how many times Lance and Keith stand next to each other subtly in the background.
Tumblr media
Their relationship would have flourished if Keith stayed on the team and I have no doubt that Keith would have been there for Lance instead of Allura when he needed it. Perhaps Lance would come to the realisation that he has feelings for Keith but that may have been too early at the point where the story was so the crew decided to have Keith leave. Perhaps because they added Shiro back to the team, the crew intentionally wanted to portray the development of their relationship before Keith would leave. This is just my own personal opinion on the matter of ‘what if’.
To conclude everything in one sentence:
The lion switch tells us what will happen to Lance and how his arc will play out.
Tumblr media
We’ve already seen Allura reject Lance, no matter how much he wanted her, they weren’t meant to be. Now that Lance realised that they don’t have a romantic future, he will find love elsewhere and in a place he didn’t know he would find it in. Lance didn’t want to pilot Red, but Red was there for him, picking him up and taking him as his paladin. Based on the lion switch, I can see a lot of Keith and Lance bonding in future seasons, and generally Keith picking Lance up and helping him recover from his heartbreak and feeling of isolation.
Also one more thing I want to point out that most fans seem to be ignoring is that s6 is the peak season for both Keith and Lance’s character arcs. Keith returned to the team and had an incredible development as a character. Meanwhile, Lance’s development had been happening in the background, subtly, and now in s6 we’ve reached the peak as well. Also I don’t think it’s coincidence that S6Ep2 focuses on BOTH Keith’s origins as well as Lance’s own heartbreak.
Season 6 was a Klance season, and it was a season where both of them became ready for a possible romantic relationship that may happen between them. Their development happened separately, but it did happen. That’s why Dreamworks placed both Keith and Lance on their s6 trailer thumbnail, because essentially, these two characters reach their peaks. The Dreamworks YouTube channel may not have anything to do with the crew, but it’s still interesting to see the thumbnail they picked for the video (other than to get views).
Tumblr media
Also, it’s fun to note the previous relationship we had between the red and black paladins. Alfor and Zarkon were best friends, Keith and Shiro were brothers, so what will Keith and Lance be now that they’re the red and black paladins? My guess is lovers (of course).
I’m going to theorise a bit here and lay out some of my expectations for s7:
- Lance and Keith will become closer. Keith will be there for Lance, and will be what Lance needs instead of what he wants. Red roaring for Lance foreshadows this (at least for me).
- Lance unlocked a sword form with his bayard and while this may be a huge development for him as the new red paladin, it also represents something Lance needs (or needed at the time to take down those training robots). When we think of a sword, we immediately attribute it to Keith whose bayard is a saber. We were promised a scene with Keith and Lance fighting back to back with their swords by Jeremy, and it’s just one of possible bonding scenes the two will have in future seasons.
- S7 will be the season when the paladins will have more time for themselves and they will be on a road trip. Nothing screams ‘bonding time’ like a road trip. I know they don’t have a wormhole but why not just cut to them returning back to Earth? No, instead the crew decided to have this road trip season and it is made for a reason. I speculate that Lance and Keith will finally have some time to catch up. Generally, all of the paladins will have some time to bond, especially since Keith wasn’t with them for the duration of two seasons. It will also give time for Allura and Lance to talk about their relationship. I’m not sure if Allura and Lance will talk about it (since the mice told Allura about Lance’s feelings, robbing him of a confession), but it is possible. To sum it up, I expect a lot of bonding between everyone.
Tumblr media
- Jeremy said that Keith’s attempted sacrifice in s4 will be mentioned and for some reason I think it will come up in one of the conversations Lance and Keith may have. I don’t think Keith would want to burden his teammates with something like that, because I don’t believe he would just casually bring it up. Something must have led to Keith mentioning it, and maybe, just maybe, Lance and Keith are going to talk about everything that had been happening and it will be mentioned. I may be stretching it here, but it’s also possible that Lance might find comfort in Keith and will talk to him about his and Allura’s relationship (or love in general). Again, this is just me speculating on my part. Keith was the person Lance opened to in s3, so I can see him opening up to Keith again and finding that comfort he’s looking for within Keith.
- Shiro will be the one to help Lance realise that he’s bi. Everyone already knows about the drawing Lauren did with Lance holding the LGBT sign with Shiro supporting him by his side. Since Lance wasn’t the one to save Shiro, I can see Lance feeling super guilty about it, and maybe they begin talking more with each other.
And that would be my TEDTalk. Thank you for reading if you reached the very end. Also in conclusion, Klance is canon king!

Personally I don’t think you should be too worried about Klance. I feel as though they are setting up a rejection for him with Allura, and that thing that happened at the start of s6 is a red herring. That’s what I’m thinking, anyway. I’m really vying for Klance being end-game and there are subtle hints all throughout the show.
yeah i guess…. ive just been rly optimistic about it so far with all the stuff jeremys said and all that but this season rly has me scared dude… like with what they pulled in the first ep and the reviews saying ‘this seasons gonna kill us’ shit like that… and the whole trailer thing too wuhhhhuhhhh

I ship klance but why are ppl thunking that the lgbt rep between 2 characters that jeremy said is klance? It can be two different chatacterz?? Im sorry I'm just not sure why y'all excited?
Is it bad for me to assume that Jeremy wasn't specifically hinting at Klance here? Just because he's the VO for Lance, doesn't mean that he was intentionally hinting at Klance or anything like that. But on the bright side, this definitely DOES confirm some kind of LGBT ship between major or semi-major characters down the line, so that's good for representation!.
I understand where you guys are coming from and I’m definitely not implying that there could be LGBTQ rep between more characters or an end game romance between two other same sex characters. But if you think realistically, Klance makes the most sense here as my one million Klance metas have proven JSJSJ.
So first of all, Jeremy has pretty much implied that there will be an end game between two LGBTQ characters. Now to be completely honest, I do not think he was referring to minor characters as they’re not exactly the main focus of the show. He was most likely referring to main characters, as in ppl on the Castle ship. And if we think realistically here, who has been the one person that is pretty much confirmed to have an end game romance on the ship who is a main character.
Yes, Lance.
Now if Jeremy is referring to an end game romance between two characters that will be considered LGBTQ, this immediately rules out Allura who is the only other person on the ship that this kid has been interested in other than possibly Keith in the future. Not to mention, let’s remember the art that Lauren drew with him holding the LGBTQ sign with Shiro (who will most likely help him through this), then all of the bi flag symbolism in some of his scenes (including a good few with Keith ahem), and how he parallels Blaytz who we’ve seen FLIRTING with a guy before. Also Keith is so obviously not straight, that I don’t even feel the need to prove otherwise.  He’s also so whipped for Lance that it’s hard to miss LOOL. Now I’ve made so many analysis of Klance to the point where I also don’t even need to be convinced that if Allurance isn’t going to be the canon end game in the show, there is no doubt in my mind that it will be Klance.
They have the development, their storylines are literally interwined, Lance has literally SHOWN romantic interest in Keith, althought subtle, it is there. Not to mention Keith literally parallels Allura which is saying A LOT. There is so much more proof, but I’m not trying to make this ask ten years long HSJSJ. Not to mention, Jeremy’s facial expressions just by the MENTION of Klance is what gives it all away too. How often Lauren and Joaquim divert us into thinking Klance won’t be canon, by saying it was a surprise or accidental, but then proceeding to give a whole ship name that means lion and saying Lance is Keith’s stability. The only logical thing I can see here is Klance happening and if it doesn’t I’ll be hella surprised, but I’ll also accept it cuz again it’s just a TV show JSJSJS. I’m just looking at things logically here. And if it wasn’t going to be between Keith and Lance, there could def be other characters, but Pidge does not seem romantically interested in anyone (they seem to keep giving her a plot line with her family), Hunk is interested in Shay, putting some sort of romance in Shiro’s plot line would make it too overwhelming since there’s so much going on with him already (this whole operation Kuron thing), and Allura is interested in Lotor (but I do think they might put Allurance together for a bit, but it most likely won’t be end game, except we’ll see). And I’m not too sure about Coran, but considering he hasn’t had a romantic interest since the start of the show, it makes sense that it wouldn’t be him as of now

Why do you think klance will be canon? I think that ship is the only gay voltron ship where you imply it has a shot. Not even Shiro/gay is something you entertain. I'm not a klance shipper, but a lot of other klance shippers think it's going to be canon as well despite the execs hinting that it won't. Help me Liz, is it that fans of klance read a convincing meta that it'll be canon?
I don’t think it will be canon, Idk what I said that implied I did.
And I’ve never really talked about Shiro’s sexuality now that I think about it, but I very much ship him with Keith obviously, so I think I do entertain Shiro/gay lol.
My only reasoning with “what if Klance is canon tho?” is because the last lgbt+ ship in a cartoon I watched (Korrasami) really caught me off-guard, I didn’t notice the hints until after re-watching and I was like “oh, okay, makes sense.” And like 1% of me wouldn’t be surprised if Klance went that route too, because there are a couple scenes that I can honestly understand why Klance fans have hope that it’ll be canon, like the “we do make a good team” scene paralleling the lighting/camera angle of a scene with Hunk and Shay in particular, and a few other moments like that if you use shipping goggles.
But the other 99% of me, the more realistic side, doesn’t think it’ll be canon, because we’re already 2/3rd’s of the way through the series and they’re barely even friends. They’re not gonna build on a Keith/Lance romance now, it’d be too rushed and out of left field, plus they have the rest of the Saving the Universe plot to deal with, that’s more important than romance. The only romance among the main characters that will get more development (and the only one I think may be canon in the end) is Allurance.
And also I don’t think it’ll happen because of the number of times the staff has shut it down, as you said. I know they wouldn’t spoil, but if it was in their plans, I think they would be a little more subtle with this brushing it off and dismissing it. Whenever an interviewer asks a question that later turns out to be true/on the right path of the plot, they answer with “hmm I’m not gonna answer that right now, just wait and see.” But when someone brings up Klance, they’ve pretty much straight-up said “we can’t go back and make it happen even if fans want it” and “we didn’t expect Klance.”

Reason why a main LGBT ship in Voltron MOST LIKELY won’t be canon
Just a thing I’ve meaning to write for awhile now. Just to make clear, I’m not writing this bash any ships, even though I personally dislike Klance (VERY MUCH), but thats not what Im doing today. This is just to discuss a thing the majority of the fandom dont seen to understand, in an unbiased way with no favor toward any ships in general. Also sorry if this shows up in the tags of other shows, I’m just using them as examples for this essay.
LGBT themes are slowly becoming more and more accepted into children and family media. We’ve seen it in Steven Universe, The Loud House, Star Vs, Adventure Time, Clarence, etc. Most talked about has prolly been Steven Universe, which the characters Ruby and Sapphire, Pearl expressing her love for Rose, etc, and Legend of Korra where Korra was seen holding hands and leaving into the spirit world with her now girlfriend at the very end. And it’s been great to see these things become shown in children and family media now more than ever, esp for representation.
But there’s one thing people, and the fans don’t understand. Is that fight for representation. And how we still have a long way to go in many ways.
Living in SoCal, where most or if not all the major media companies are, you get to know a lot of people who work for them. People that have told me things that they have witnessed themselves or been told from their higher ups. Now since this isn’t my own personal experience with the companies themselves, I know what I’m saying here can be taken with a grain of salt, these are just what I’ve heard from people and friends that do work for Disney, Dreamworks, etc.
That even though LGBT media is getting more accepted in children and family media, there’s still a lot that won’t be accepted, that in many or most cases it’s subtle, it’s only background characters, etc. Yes, there, was Korra, but even that was subtle, we didn’t know they were together until Bryke told us it was, and they weren’t allowed to explore it until much later in a comic book series. As for Steven Universe, the gems are a very…special case. Yes it is definitely considered LGBT rep, but they do it in a way they can get away with it easier, with the fact that they are an all-female/genderless race of aliens.
A lot of the fact of this is because, the media and businesses primarily focus on ratings and money. With children’s media, it’s different than shows like South Park, Rick and Morty, Family Guy, or any shows that are TV-14 and higher, because those shows are on a completely different spectrum and can get away with A LOT more than family entertainment. Even with movies that are aimed toward children and family, yes there are times they insert themes only adults understand, but they usually are gags or have no relevance to the plot. Children and family media is more fragile cause not only are they trying to cater to kids, but also the parents that are watching too. The parents that buy the kids the merchandise and other things related to the series.
Now, the next thing I’m gonna say, please don’t get angry, I’m only speaking the truth. I am a trans guy myself, whom is bi/pan, and will always be proud to be apart of the LGBT spectrum. But with children/family media…thats still slowly being accepted because there are, unfortunately, a lot homophobia/transphobia/etc still in this world. There are still countries that make it still illegal to be apart of that spectrum. And until that all fully changes, family media will still be affected by it, even if it’s slowly starting to change for the better.
That’s where Klance, Sheith, and other main LGBT Voltron ships come in. The majority of the fandom have expressed their want of an LGBT themed ship in the series…but a WANT doesn’t always lead to a WILL. Even if the writers wanted a main LGBT ship, who says the Dreamworks executives and higher ups really will allow it? If it does happen, will you really still accept it even if it gets the same subtle end as Korra? Or even small subtle hints that goes no where?
Voltron isn’t aired just in the US and major countries either, the company has to take that into account as well. Its a business first and always will be. Yes the viewers and fandoms will always be important to the show, but sometimes, what the viewers want isn’t always what they can get away with. The story has already been written since the beginning as well, with recording beginning as early as 2015.
The fandom will prolly accuse them of queerbaiting, telling the executives why they put this moment in if it didn’t lead to anything, etc. I’ve been in plenty of fandoms where this has been states several times, with ships that had so much potential that never saw the light of day. But in the end, you need to see it’s not about just the ships. Shippers will always see things for their ships or interpret moments as canon evidence, that’s been going on since a lot of people in fandoms were even born. You just also need to see and understand it from a business and media point of view as well. Most of the time there’s always a reason.
Who knows though, maybe Voltron will be the first to break that barrier? But it’s very highly unlikely. Don’t be mad at the writers and creators, threatening them if an LGBT main pairing doesn’t become canon. Maybe they just couldn’t do it for a reason far more greater than what they can control.
And LGBT themes doesn’t have to be ships either. Even if the LGBT pair we get may only be subtle or a background pair, there’s always a chance of a trans or nonbinary character, but tbh, those are even more rare in childrens media than same-sex relationships.
Thank you for reading this if you did. I greatly appreciate it. Please share and feel free to comment, including counterpoint and criticisms, as long as they are done in a mature matter. Comments like “pee your pants” isn’t what I call very mature…

here are my thoughts on the bullshit under the cut cuz it's gonna get long probs i assure you it’s a reassuring post:
ok so the interview itself wasn't bad to me honestly. jeremy did not deny the bi!lance hint, which was the most important thing to know. the fact that he said "that much i can say" implies that there's something left to know that he can't say because nda.
i'm gonna list a positive thing and a negative thing here: the negative one is that on one hand, it pisses me off that lgbt characters are treated as such a big spoilery deal when it should just....feel so natural to have them in a show. also thinking back that dreamworks tagged certain videos as klance just for views...well it's kind of a coward move if they don't at least end the show with lgbt rep. on the other, i really don't see the point with going all "no comment" about it if it weren't to happen?? that would be very assholey, and i know that the writers are not to be trusted, but the mere fact that they lie so much over things than then ended up being canon (e.g: galra keith, paladin allura, pidge being a girl etc) can't help but make me think they are pretty much hiding the endgame couple on purpose. you could argue they could be hinting at allurance which i'm not excluding bc some of the things could be honestly interpreted that way and also they never mention them ever as a couple except i remember like kimberly saying that allura isn't interested in lance (but she could be lying obviously) and jeremy here stating that lance has still a crush on her which is pretty evident and there's nothing new. (we also learned, according to him, that lance basically can dish it out but he can't take it which frankly...i can see pretty well as canon)
on that spectrum, pls note that this happening (or lance ending up with a girl for the matter) doesn't absolutely excludes bi!lance like at all. he can still be confirmed as bi and end up with a girl and that itself would still be very important! one thing doesn't exclude the other honestly so i say very confidently that lance being bi will be confirmed. like 100% convinced that it will. (do not forget lauren's drawing where lance is holding the lgbt sign, there's a specific reason he's the one holding that)
also does anybody think that....this stress over lance liking ladies and stuff is kinda....suspicious?? like jeremy himself was used to say "lol he flirts with anybody on two legs ahha" and now today all of a sudden he's putting a lot of stress on the ""woman"" part. which kind of threw me off? i might be reaching obviously, but mmm you know? and all of this comes after joaquim said "what he's looking for is getting to a place that might be different than when he started in the series" and “what he wants might not be what he needs” and if math isn't an opinion, he started the series always wanting allura so if what he wants is now changing..........................
it is also true that lauren used female pronouns in that interview and while that could be an indicator that lance will end up with a girl, it's also not set in stone bc.... they used to hide pidge's pronouns the same way and if lauren had said "him" you know that keith would have suddenly come to mind bc??? he's legit the only person lance has been paired up so much with. they've been sort of a duo ever since the beginning. and they've had most of the couple tropes out of all the possible pairings??? in the show??? allow me to list some. I'm too lazy to back this up with pics but like you know the scenes i'm talking about (and i also say this because when i ship something i ALWAYS look at canon interactions. and they have a lot):
the bonding moment (or the we are a good team scene if you will), which is not only visually very romantic (the purple lightning aka their two primary colors mixed together) but its sort of the turning point of their relationship and it's something that's very much used with couples especially with couples with their dynamic because oh lord!!!!!! do you know how many heterosexual couples exist with a dynamic like theirs? broody boy meets friendly girl and they're total opposites but ops they fall in love?? bitch literally every goddamn YA novel is like this. anyways, you know that scene would be considered romantic if it was between a boy and a girl, and indeed, allurance sort of paralleled that scene in s4 so if you consider that as romantic but not this one....well....buddy,,,,,,,they're basically in the same lions keith and lance were aka the fire and ice dynamic and if you can see that as romantic with a/l you should be able to see it the same way with....k/l but i digress).
as i was saying, the bonding moment is the turning point of keith and lance's relationship. after that we get:
1) an episode where keith is super anxious to have lance out of a pod and gets jealous when he sees lance flirting with allura, reminds him of their "bonding moment" and gets offended that lance doesnt remember (and an entire discussion could be open as to why he was so offended and the vlog kinda sets that up), overall the flirty banter that we're used to (not to mention this is the famous infamous bi flag planet)
2) a solo mission where they're shown to be working extremely well with each other (like classic battle couple duo scenes)
onto other tropes:
the subtle jealousy that can be interpreted both ways
THE ELEVATOR SCENE which is such a common trope for main couples!! they usually get stuck and have a moment of clarification or something like that. keith and lance's was a lot more comedic but it did lead them to collaborate in battle 2 seconds after so.... it did have an impact like those scenes usually do. (also that scene wasn’t necessary for the plot at all and yet...)
Lance making that fond face while talking about Keith that, may I remember you, was animated purposely to be that way. and overall there's a lot of subtle things like lance being constantly worried over keith in season 2 even though they didn't have much dynamic development??
the hey man scene? the fact that everybody was looking at lance EXPECTING HIM TO DO SOMETHING. and he could have easily looked back at them like "why me???" BUT NOPE, he was ready to go to comfort him!!!!!!!!
i get so worked up over the fact that so many of their scenes can be paralleled with other scenes as the story goes bc LETS BE FUCKING REAL FOR A GODDAM SECOND: they're the only pairing who started a way and are ending up in another. because they've had the most coherent development as a pairing in the seasons and we're fucking halfway through the show and when you also remember that it's pretty clear that lance wants to falls in love and that it's a ""slow burn""" kind of deal,,,,how in the fuck,,,,can it be other than klance??? literally nO OTHER PAIRING had a development since the goddamn start i’m not even saying this with my biased ass i’m saying this objectively speaking!!!!
all of season 3 could be a huge romantic trope honestly but like 2 scenes in particular strike as very romantic:
the leave the math to pidge scene obviously (the way it is framed is very tropey lmfao) and the way we see keith through lance's eyes.......pretty gay if you ask me
and the i got you buddy scene which someone made notice that AN EXACT SAME SCENE happens in the wonder woman movie but with a boy/girl pairing ofc. BUT IT'S THE SAME FUCKING SCENE THAT'S LIKE ROMANTIC TROPE 101 I AINT PLAYING
add on the fact that keith might have left team voltron to make sure lance had a place and boom. pretty romantic to me.
even if jeremy sees them as brothers....which is like...super fucking odd to me bc....he never mentioned this before almost like he's backtracking lololol, his opinion isn't...you know...canon. (and like lbr they never acted like brothers in the show??? and the creators never addressed them as such unlike...you know what) i like jeremy jokes and meme as much as the next guy but i'm a realist and i know that he doesn't really ship klance or anything he just knows how to spoiler the good stuff lolz but also he didn't say anything wrong like it's just how he sees it but the creators never said so (lauren montgomery called lance keith's stability don't forget that) and overall there are wayyyy too many hints to not believe that's its gonna be canon. like......it even makes sense with the overall story better than any other pairing?? because it's pretty plausible that lance had a crush on keith at the garrison that tried to mask with the rivalry. the way he acts and the way he tries to always get his attention furtherly proves that. it's a common thing to do when you have a crush lmao.
LIKE THOSE TWO ARE ALWAYS PAIRED UP EVEN IN THE FUCKING SEASON 2 POSTER?? LIKE THEY COULD HAVE GONE WITH KEITH IN THE MARMORA OUTFIT SINCE IT WAS A BIG PART OF THE SEASON BUT NO??? THEY PUT HIM IN THE SWIM TRUNKS WITH LANCE FOR THOSE 2 MINUTES OF SCENE THEY HAD TOGETHER?????
ok that's it keep on hoping and remember that klance not happening doesn't mean that also bi lance won't because those two things aren’t mutually exclusive ok? but also don't lose hope on klance itself especially if it's something that makes you happy because fandom is meant to be a distraction and klance is an healthy lgbt ship that deserves all the attention it gets and it’s groundbreaking from so many aspects and it being canon would be amazing. bye
ALSO PLEASE STOP COMMENTING SHIT ON JEREMY’S PERSONAL PICS ON INSTAGRAM HE DIDN’T DO ANYTHING WRONG THIS IS EMBARASSING
