Art Week Workshop: Nature prints with Keg de Souza (12.9.24)
Description of session
"Plants have always moved over and between land masses, transported both intentionally and inadvertently from their native lands to new ones. This spread of plants has accelerated over the past few hundred years through colonial expansion, massively altering ecosystems.
We will begin by wandering the university gardens to gather weeds. These specimens will serve as a starting point to return to the printmedia room to print, research and discuss how the movement of plants has left lasting impacts, many of which have propelled us towards climate crisis."
Short summary of Keg de Souza's practice (with link to portfolio)
Goan heritage (from the Goa state in India)
Politics of space (architecture, colonialism, displacement, culture, etc.) - e.g. Abundance: Fruit of the Sea, Bounty of the Mountain (2016) and Impossible Utopia (2011)
Botany/landscapes in relation to global/colonial histories (documented in herbariums and other botanical archives), as well as the impacts these histories have (e.g. "trauma of the landscape") - e.g. If a coconut falls (2024) and Monumental as Anything (2023)
EDIT (OCTOBER 2024) - Here's a link to more detail on her practice and her works:
Process and research (with images)
We collected a number of plants (mostly weeds) in a hidden garden on campus.
After choosing the ones we liked to use for our print, we rolled ink onto the plants and printed them onto paper to create a monoprint (NOTE: I WILL DEFINITELY CONSIDER THIS PROCESS FOR A FUTURE WORK).
Some of the plants I found that I could identify: Euphorbia peplus (Petty Spurge), Nandina domestica (Heavenly Bamboo), Cyclospermum Leptophyllum (Marsh Parlsey), Youngia japonica (Oriental False Hawksbeard), Epilobium ciliatum (Fringed Willow-herb)
Interestingly, after some research, I learnt that all of these plants either have been used or are being researched for their medicinal properties.
Petty Spurge: Has been historically used to treat warts and other skin conditions, and has recently been researched for its cytotoxic (toxic to cells) properties in treating non-melanoma skin cancers.
Marsh Parsley: Has been researched for antibacterial and antimicrobial properties.
Heavenly Bamboo: Antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties for treating colds, asthma and other respiratory conditions in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine.
Oriental False Hawksbeard: Used for treating fever, snakebites, coughs and colds, shingles, sore throat and diarrhoea in traditional Chinese medicine (and for treating wounds, and preventing the formation of kidney stones in traditional Bangladeshi medicine) - recent research has also found antiviral properties in treating respiratory conditions like RSV.
Fringed Willow-herb (not used in monoprints out of fear that the flowers would get damaged in their already delicate state - perhaps I could try a technique not too dissimilar to the Japanese printing technique gyotaku): Used to treat infected skin sores, hip and back pain, and diarrhoea and other gastrointestinal problems by some Indigenous American groups.
Final prints
Row 1-2: Ghosts of a Herbarium: Euphorbia peplus (Petty Spurge) and Cyclospermum Leptophyllum (Marsh Parsley)
Row 3-5: Ghosts of a Herbarium: Sprig of Nandina domestica (Heavenly Bamboo) embraced by Cyclospermum Leptophyllum (Marsh Parlsey) and Youngia japonica (Oriental False Hawksbeard)
Row 6: Both monoprints alongside each other

Greatly appreciate this!
(Post from Zeurel's tumblr)
Been going through a lot of animation reels this past week and a bit and one prevailing thing I noticed was that a lot of animators either struggle with, or completely disregard, the timing and pacing of their frames. Timing and spacing is (to me) utterly essential to create some nice, smooth and well flowing animation, otherwise it can look very jittery, jumpy, volume will fluctuate greatly and won't look too good.
This clip here should help show you how I place my keys, breakdowns and inbetweens to get some nice movement. (I wish I had room for timing charts!)
As you can see from the timeline grab here, a lot of this is on 3's, with a few 2's here and there. Even some 4's to help ease. With proper placing of frames even 3's and 4's can look smooth!
AND, if you have toon boom, and you wanna have a deep dive into this file, I've attached it below so you can really have a good look!

"I love you," Leander confesses softly as he pulls you in for a gentle kiss.
"I love you," Leander calls out to you every time one of you is leaving.
"I love you," Leander writes in every note he leaves for you to find.
"I love you," Leander mumbles drunkenly as he wraps his arms around you.
"I love you," Leander chuckles as you shove him gently after a stupid joke.
"I love you," Leander reassures you after an argument.
"I love you," Leander tells you randomly every day, just to remind you.
"I love you," Leander hugs you tightly when you're feeling down.
"I love you," Leander kisses away your tears.
"I love you," Leander nibbles on your neck before pulling you closer to him.
"I love you," Leander moans softly as you trace your fingers along his back.
"I love you," Leander whispers in your ear before you fall asleep in his arms.
"I love you," Leander murmurs in the quiet moments.
"I love you," Leander declares proudly to anyone who will listen, as if shouting it from the rooftops for the whole world to hear.
"I love you," Leander promises, and you believe him.

your art is so beautiful and i've been in love with it forever. the concepts you strum up & the creativity that goes into your NPC designs is so wonderful esp in relation to soulsborne games. i adore your malenia/gwynevere art, as well as ur designs for finlay & ludwig. I just saw your designs for walter and ayre and i honest to god almost burst into tears because of how wonderful they are. the post you made saying you think ayre has impossibly kind eyes made me TT. i wasn't able to get the fromsoft artbook but i will be patiently waiting for the day you make another one. in the meantime, please take care of your wrist so we don't lose you any time soon
hello! ngl your message makes me smile like an idiot for a whole day. thank you for taking your time to tell me all of that, it makes my heart incredibly warm to know i have such a special part in others' enjoyment of Fromsoft's game <33
my fanbook will probably be reprinted in December this year, since there are other ppl asking as well, stay tuned!
#since i start working as studio artist i finally know what wrist pain is but im exercising daily now!!#ask#anon#reply

✨ Experimenting with the studio Ghbli artstyle! ✨
⬇️ Read more for some random rambling and little updates on my projects⬇️
Hello hello!
I recently joined a year-long program of drawing exercises and for the month of January it was included to copy another artist's style. To make everything more interesting I decided to pick the artstyle from the artbooks I own and to have some free content for my blog I made some pl characters (what a smartass). However since all of this is about improving/challenging myself I picked some characters I don't draw too often and I gotta say that I'm decently satisfied with the results! I might do more or... do other characters with other artstyles so you'll see I guess eheh
-
Also, little off topic note, I'm working on the drawings for the dtiys (yes I'm making two, you'll see why) and writing down all the rules and stuff! It should be ready for tomorrow or the day after tomorrow! ✨
Also x2 I still have to work on the final part of the weekly Des-guide, it'll arrive sooner or later but probably for the next week (I hope)

Splotch Summer entries #13 - Snowboarder and skier
If you've been an artist for a while you know that you can use the silhouette of someone draw them from the front or back. So that's my snowboarder even tho the crouch angles would be different. And an elf skier, why not!
This is the end of my run of Splotch Summer 2024, thanks for joining me!
It's still chill to join in or try it out for yourself as an exercise, just search "Splotch Summer" and my post will come up, or check out my tag on my blog. There's links with all the base images/splotches and all that.

Portrait of my boyfriend from an exercise I did today. Fighting my perfectionism by setting a 20 minute timer and doing a rough and dirty portrait with grayscale values (then using a gradient map for fun) (okay to rb)
[Image ID: a digital art portrait of a young man laying on his back, head turned halfway toward the camera. You see him from the chest up. He has strong features, shoulder length curly dark hair, and a short beard. His expression is calm and watchful. The background is simple leaf shapes, with some leaves in front of him, like you're looking at him through a heavily wooded area. The portrait is entirely in shades of green.]

have 2 ask… what’s ur rendering process??? because like idk if this makes sense but your work always looks like if someone drew with oil pastel colored pencils and i have NO IDEA how u do that shit 😭😭 sorry if this is like. a lot to ask i’ve always been so curious
i usually start out w a rough sketch and lay down base colors under it and when i’m ready merge the layers and start painting it and adding detail ! sometimes i even just paint over the sketch on one layer
i do this with most of my stuff becasue it makes it easier to bring together the lines and color in an interesting way and also easier to like. redo a face or something without having to go back and forth on each layer.
and for colors and shading i just experiment with colors and diff hues. go crazy use a bunch of varying hues and shades for shading and lighting instead of one chosen color. putting a slight hue change/jitter on ur brush also adds a lot to the piece. and when i render if it’s more stylized i just go in with fun shapes and scribbles and lines!!! sometimes a color choice looks really weird up close but really good once ur finished. just go crazy and experiment is my advice.
#layers are a lifesaver at times and i definitely use them like crazy but also making urself use no layers is a very good exercise#it’s why i like ms paint so much lol#i don’t have the brushes k use rn sorry…. maybe i’ll share later if i remember#also i don’t remember where i get most brushes i download them then find them one day years later#but the reg airbrush with pen pressure is VERY GOOD!!! use airbrush#and i use clip studio paint#☀️🌈🔥#asks#maybe i’ll go more in depth about how i pick colors someday …..
