My qualifications for the analysis you’re about to read is 9 years of PBJ school lunches and a lifelong addiction to jelly biscuits. (These gorgeous things, not the dry hockey pucks you Brits call scones.)

Preserves have big chunks of fruit, like whole or half pieces. They’re mixed with sugar and usually combined with jam, like so.

Jam is fruit that has been crushed into a spreadable consistency. It’s still kinda chunky. This is an example:

Jelly is fruit that has also been crushed and strained for its juices, which then get mixed with pectin or gelatin and heated. This is our jelly.

Chutney isn’t really a thing here in the US as it may be in the UK. A lot of people will use chutney interchangeably with preserves, even though the spices are different. This is a tomato chutney.

We tend to use preserves, jams, and jellies for sweets whereas chutney is used more for savory treats. There is also a version of chutney that gets strained smooth, but most of us over here wouldn’t call that chutney; it’s either jelly or butter.

We also have marmalades, which is preserves and citrus rinds boiled in sugar and water:

And fruit butter, which is fruit cooked down to a paste, strained, and sweetened. You can use any kind of fruit. Apple butter is very popular. (My family actually makes apple butter in the fall. We do a pig-out and everyone goes home with jars of apple butter and containers of pork bbq.) This is apple butter.

That doesn’t look like jam to me. Nor does it look like chutney, as anon suggested, to me.

That looks like preserves; big chunks of fruit with terrible spreadability.

Great is a 30-year-old man, but episode seven of Wandee Goodday could've told me he was a 19-year-old child, and I would've went with it.

Because every time Yak looked sad, I was thinking about how the world was hurting Yei and Cher's only child. Their precious son was in pain!

And each time he was dealt another blow, he looked younger in my eyes. Here he is as a 15-year-old.

When Yei pulled him up by his shirt and threw the boxing gloves behind him, he was 12.

I have baby-fied this man, and the SECOND he said "Doc" in that tiny little voice the way he did, I would have given him EVERYTHING he wanted!

If he wanted a bouncy house, he would get a bouncy house. If he wanted fideo, I would've gotten up right then and there and made him fideo. If he just wanted to put his head in my lap and cry, I would've gotten a cramp in my leg because I wouldn't have moved until he was ready to get up as the little space-themed night light glowed in his room.

Yak is now tesorito (my little treasure).
