#Repost from our friends at @voice4sharks @download.ins --- #RobStewart was a Canadian photographer and filmmaker, as well as a conservationist. He dedicated his life to saving our planet, and focused mainly on sharks, which can be seen in his work such as #Sharkwater. Unfortunately he died roughly 2 and a half years ago in a #scubadiving incident while filming #SharkwaterExtinction. This movie showcased Rob’s travels across oceans to bring to light the horrific truth behind the illegal and violent shark finning practices so that others could see why it’s so important to stand up for our finned friends and do everything we can to end finning worldwide. Rob is also widely known for starting a movement across the country for a #finfree Canada, seeing as his home was importing nearly 170,000 kg of shark fins a year! And in June, his dream came true when Canada became the first country to ban the import and export of shark fins! ❤️🇨🇦 Many are now following in Rob’s footsteps and helping spread the word about the current crises sharks are facing. You can too by signing the petition to change Canadian ministers @cathmckennaottcen’s and @jonathanwnv’s mind about adding mako sharks to @cites Appendix II! Mahalo for joining us out in the water! 🌊 :  “When I was told that my company would be headed to #oahu for the week, I called one of my oldest and most traveled friends in the world, @stsean9 and asked ‘hey, man. I’m looking to do something fun while I’m out in #hawaii. Got any good hiking recs?’ Completely ignoring the ‘hiking’ part of that request, he hit me with the @oneoceandiving IG page. … Some highlights of the ensuing conversation include such phrases as ‘are you out of your mind?,’ ‘What? don’t you trust me?,’ and ‘I do, it’s just that… sometimes, I wonder why…’ Ultimately, after considering the long list of close calls I’ve had over the years while doing something stupid, and how He has never once let me down in the 20+ years we’ve known each other, I figured… what the hell? Why not? So that’s how I found myself on a boat yesterday with 7 complete strangers, headed 3 miles off the #northshore to do some cage-free shark snorkeling. As a guy who has traditionally spent his free time wandering through #newmexico keeping an eye over my shoulder for mountain lions, up in #teton holding my breathe while grizzlies wandered through camp, or chasing off coyote packs in #westtexas, I’m no stranger to predators. In most cases, I’m more wary of other people that I run across in the #backcountry than the wildlife. That being said, this was completely and utterly outside of my comfort zone. I’ve never been a super strong swimmer, so I’d be lying if I said that dropping into a pelagic environment teeming with #apexpredators while mouth breathing through a straw was something that I was mentally prepared for. Ultimately, it was a lesson in trust; trust in the experts, trust in my friends, and trust in myself. A textbook example of why Mom always told me - #dosomethingfun. Tiger shark season is in full affect for us in Hawaii. We saw #CurlyGirl a few days ago and a massive one the size of Tank yesterday which has yet to be identified, I will be posting soon. Along with the arrival of these large female tiger sharks we have seen a few large males which is different for us. The main thing During this season for people that live here in Hawaii is that these larger sharks are the ones u want patrolling the water, these sharks actually push the juvenile sharks out of the area. The juvenile sharks around 10ft have not quite figured out what is a food source and what is not, leading them to explore more, take risks, and to be assertive on approaches due to a lack of experiences. Usually these are the sharks mostly responsible for negative interactions with humans. The Big Sharks already know what is and what is not a food source, leading them to be cautious, and calculated especially when approaching humans. The irony is that I see people kill these beautiful animals out of fear, thinking that by killing them they will make the ocean safer for humans. Up close with this 23ft white shark named Haole Girl. This is 450 million years of perfection. Sharks have survived 5 mass extinction on the planet but I’m not sure they will survive humans. So many human impacts on our ocean but shark fining and shark fishing is one of the biggest problems. . Even though people in the west don’t eat shark fin soup, we help supply it. 33 percent of the shark fins come from Europe and Georgia is the biggest importer and exporter of shark fins in the whole American continent. . We need sharks for a healthy marine ecosystem. Raising awareness to the issues is the biggest factor for change to happen. 🦈🦈🦈 . In 20 years of diving the north shore, actively looking for Sharks, I have only seen around 30 deferent individual tiger sharks.. IUCN has tiger sharks listed as a threatened species with less than 30,000 world wide. Tiger sharks have a vital role in our oceans ecosystem, literally the garbage men, taking care of the dead rotten things that no other shark would want to. Also studies show how tiger sharks move different species in and out of areas , like sea turtles so they don’t over graze sea grass. There is so much more yet to be discovered about sharks, but we are running out of time at the rate sharks are being killed. World wide, humans have killed off over 90 percent of shark populations in just the last 50 years and continue to kill over 70 million sharks each year. You can make a huge impact on the survival of sharks by just asking were ur sea food comes from. If it is not sustainably caught from local fishermen DON’T EAT it. The long line fishing fleets are basically destroying our ocean and wasting resources with the amount of by-catch “discarded unwanted fish, most of which is sharks”. Some conservative reports of by-catch average 40 to 50 percent of total catch others report up to 80 percent on long line fisheries. This is not just about the devastation of shark populations, it is about the survival of our ocean. Most of the seafood consumed by humans comes at a cost to the environment that should be unacceptable. There is still a short window of time to reverse the damages but the time to change is now.
